------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Game of the day: Atlanta Hawks at L.A. Lakers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Atlanta Hawks at Los Angeles Lakers (-5, 178.5)

THE STORY
: The last time the Atlanta Hawks went on a five-game trip (Jan. 23-31), they finished 4-1 for their best record since going 5-0 in 1968-69, their inaugural season. Atlanta begins another five-game journey Tuesday against the Los Angeles Lakers. The Lakers return home, where they are 11-2, after a 3-3 trip that ended with a 94-92 victory at Toronto. “We've just got to keep getting better little by little, and again, whether we won or lost (in Toronto), I thought we got a little better,” coach Mike Brown said.

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, SportSouth (Hawks), FS West (Lakers)

LINE: Some books opened with L.A. set as a 5.5-point favorite at the open, but most shops were serving Lakers -5 Monday evening. The total is holding at 178.5 after opening a point higher.

ABOUT THE HAWKS (18-10): Maybe it’s a good thing the Hawks are getting out of town. They have lost four of five at home, and were trounced 107-87 by Miami on Sunday. “You're only as good as your last game,” power forward Josh Smith said. “And we were awful. So we have to take whatever people say about us and just use it as motivation.” Center Jason Collins (strained left elbow) will be evaluated Wednesday in Los Angeles. He is expected to miss two weeks.

ABOUT THE LAKERS (16-12): The Lakers’ six-game trip was supposed to determine just where this team might be headed. Instead it raised doubt and was inconclusive. So it is not surprising that the Lakers worked out free agent guard Gilbert Arenas, a three-time All-Star, on Sunday. “We are a poor road team, and that is what we need to turn around,” said Kobe Bryant, who scored the winner at Toronto. “If we could figure out a way to win on the road, our record would be much, much better. We are a very good home team.”

TRENDS:
- The Hawks are 1-4 against the spread in their last five road games against the Lakers.
- The Lakers are 2-8 against the spread in their last 10 games against the Eastern Conference.
- The under is 6-2 in Atlanta's last eight overall.

BUZZER BEATERS:

1. Atlanta has lost five consecutive games in Los Angeles, last winning there on Feb. 15, 2006.

2. Hawks guard Joe Johnson needs 13 points to reach 10,000 for his career.

3. Los Angeles has not lost a season series to the Hawks since 1978-79, losing three of four games. Tuesday’s game will be their only meeting this season.

PREDICTION: Lakers 97, Hawks 91

Pick 'n' roll: Tuesday's best NBA bets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Houston Rockets at Memphis Grizzlies (-3.5, 191)

The Memphis Grizzlies have covered the number just once over the last five games and you probably shouldn't expect too much from this club before the All-Star break.

They fell 98-88 to Utah on Sunday as a 6.5-point favorite.

"Repetition is the best way to improve, and right now we're just holding on," Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins told reporters. "When we come back from the All-Star break, we'll have at least two days to practice, and hopefully we'll get our plays and schemes down. We haven't had multiple days off since the start of the season."

If the Grizz are looking for sympathy, they won’t get any from Houston. The Rockets have been on the road for the last 10 days and will finish off the six-game voyage Tuesday. So far they’re 3-2 straight up and against the spread after dropping a 106-97 decision to Golden State.

The good news was that Kevin Martin broke out of his slump with 28 points in the losing effort.

We like Houston to finish the trip on a positive note.

Pick: Rockets

San Antonio Spurs at Detroit Pistons (8, 186.5)

The San Antonio Spurs withstood the loss of Manu Ginobili and have stayed on a roll despite being booted out of their home arena because of the rodeo.

The Spurs look to remain perfect on their season-long nine-game road trip when they visit the Detroit Pistons on Tuesday. San Antonio is seeking its eighth straight victory overall and four in a row on its annual Rodeo Road Trip.

Ginobili returned from a 22-game absence because of a broken hand and scored eight points in 17 minutes in Saturday’s 103-89 win at New Jersey. One of his goals will be to avoid disrupting the team’s chemistry.

“I just want to contribute, help a little bit, don't change anything of what the team's doing, just try to fit in again,” he said.

Forward Tim Duncan is riding a streak of four consecutive double-doubles – his longest of the season. The Spurs will be looking to win eight straight for the first time since Jan. 7-21, 2011.

Pick: Spurs

Pucking the trends: This week's best NHL bets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Every week, we update you on who's hot, who's not and situational betting spots in the National Hockey League.

HOT TEAM: Montreal Canadiens

February began with a pair of disheartening losses to New Jersey and Washington in a three-day span, and it seemed like it was all over but the crying in Montreal.

But goaltender Carey Price has refocused the troops, and while still very much a postseason long shot, the Canadiens are alive. And that's all the desperate fans in Montreal can ask for these days.

Price made 32 saves Saturday en route to a 5-0 shutout of Toronto. It was the Canadiens' fourth straight victory and pushed them, somehow, to within seven points of the eighth and final playoff berth in the Eastern Conference.

Price has four shutouts this season, and 16 in his career, but don't discount left wing Max Pacioretty's role in the revival, as well. Heading into Monday's game against Carolina, he has five goals in his last four games, and 23 overall.

COLD TEAM: Minnesota Wild

Remember the great first half that surprising Minnesota orchestrated this season? Well, it's about the only thing keeping the Wild above .500 these days. Saturday's puzzling 3-1 loss to Columbus of all teams -- the second defeat to the lowly Blue Jackets in a span of five days -- was Minnesota's fourth consecutive. And heading into Tuesday's game against Anaheim, the Wild (25-22-8) possess just three points all month.

Minnesota coach Mike Yeo is searching for answers with little luck. After 30 games, this team had the best record in the NHL. And they are 5-15-5 since.

Goal scoring has been a problem, despite Minnesota's depth. It's getting late in the season, and still, nobody has 20 tallies yet. Dany Heatley (18) is the leader, and he's followed by Kyle Brodziak (15), and Cal Clutterbuck (13). Not terrific numbers, and certainly not enough to strike fear into anyone in the Western Conference playoff race.

OVER PLAY: Nashville Predators

You wouldn't expect any team with a goaltender like Pekka Rinne to take residence in over-land for long, so take this with a grain of salt. But for the time being, there's some serious value in Nashville overs.

Saturday's 4-3 loss in a shootout to the Bruins in Boston was the Predators' third straight over and fourth in the last six games. At 23-27-6 over on the season, Nashville still has a ways to go to be a consistent play, but at least there's reason now to keep them on your radar.

All three of those consecutive overs were 4-3 losses, two of them in shootouts. So, maybe, the Predators, still a comfortable No. 5 seed in the Western Conference after Saturday's action, are starting to feel it a little bit as the season heads for home.

UNDER PLAY: Los Angeles Kings

Saturday's 2-1, overtime matinee loss to the Islanders in New York was a microcosm of the Kings' season. A terrific goaltending battle between Jonathan Quick and his opponent, Evgeni Nabokov, not enough Los Angeles goal scoring, and, in the end, a cashed under.

The Kings, who played the Stars in Dallas on Sunday night, are clinging to life in the Western Conference playoff race on the strength of their defense and goaltending, and that's never been more evident than in their over-under totals. Saturday's loss pushed an over-less streak to 12 games. There were eight unders in that run, with four pushes.

Headed into Sunday’s game, the Kings had already produced 32 unders. Only Winnipeg (33) had more. And with home games coming up with week against Phoenix (Thursday), and Calgary (Saturday), perhaps more of the same is in store.

SURVEYING THE SCHEDULE:

** The Flyers, who met Detroit on Sunday, have some time to figure out what's ailing them. They won't play again until Thursday, at home versus Buffalo, and in an eight-day stretch starting on Monday, they will only play two games total.

** It's the opposite story for San Jose, which began a run on Sunday that could define their season. The Sharks, who met the Blues on Sunday in St. Louis, are in the middle of a stretch that spans 10 games in 17 days. There are two sets of back-to-back games in there, and nine of them are away from San Jose.

Ice picks: Tuesday's best NHL bets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Rangers at Boston Bruins (-135, 5)

The Boston Bruins are a tough team to play against, especially when they’re in their own barn. But don’t expect the Rangers to be bothered by Boston’s physical play.

The Rangers, who sit in first place in the Eastern Conference, five points in front of the Bruins, also lead the league with 46 fighting majors this season. Boston sits second with 42.

New York won the first meeting between the two teams on Jan. 21, getting a power play goal from Marian Gaborik in overtime for a 3-2 victory.

"I'm looking forward to it," Boston coach Claude Julien said of the rematch. "I liked the game we played them last time, and even though we lost, it was a heavy game, two teams that are hard to play against, and that's what we need right now."

Boston bounced back from a 6-0 blowout loss to Buffalo by slipping by Nashville 4-3 on Saturday, but the B's are only 3-4 in their last seven. New York has won five of its last six.

Pick: Rangers

Anaheim Ducks at Minnesota Wild (-110, 5.5)

This season is slipping away from the Minnesota Wild after the club’s fast start.

The Wild jumped out to 20-7-3 record at the beginning of the season but it’s all been downhill since and they now sit in 12th place in the Western Conference. Last week Minnesota dropped a pair of games to Columbus, the league’s worst team by a landslide.

"This time of year, we know we need wins. At this time of the year, outplaying a team unfortunately doesn't matter a whole lot," Wild coach Mike Yeo told reporters after a 3-1 loss to Columbus. "Deserving to win, unfortunately, doesn't count for a whole lot. We have to find ways to win. We have to win games where we outplay the team like we did tonight, and we have to win games sometimes where it's even or 50-50."

Now the Wild have to face a Ducks team that’s finally winning some games. Corey Perry broke out with a hat trick in a 5-3 win over the Blue Jackets and Minnesota could have trouble keeping up with Anaheim’s firepower.

Pick: Ducks
