Fullcourt Report: College hoops betting news and notes
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ACC

Florida State sits tied atop the ACC standings with a 7-1 conference record. The Seminoles are in first place along with North Carolina, who they handed a whopping 33-point (90-57) loss to a few weeks back.

Florida State has been a strong defensive team in recent years has maintained that level this season. But the Noles' biggest improvement has come on the offensive end. One of the main reasons for that has been the addition of Ian Miller, who became eligible right around Christmas.

“He’s meant an awful lot to our team and I’d say he has as much to do with our turnaround as anybody,” FSU head coach Leonard Hamilton told reporters.

The Seminoles are 6-2 ATS in conference play, including a perfect 3-0 ATS as underdogs.

Big Ten

Penn State has certainly been through the ringer over the last six months. And the basketball team hasn’t been much better, with an overall losing record and a dismal 2-9 mark in conference play.

However, the Nittany Lions have been a tough out on their home court in conference play. While they are just 2-3 SU, they are a money-making 4-1 ATS as underdogs at home.

Penn State has one of the best players in the Big Ten with guard Tim Frazier averaging 18.3 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 6.3 assists per game.

Big 12

Texas has played in a lot of close games recently. Nine of the Longhorns’ 11 conference games have been decided by single digits. Texas’ six league losses have come by an average of just five points per game.

The Longhorns had lost five of their previous six games before defeating Texas Tech on Saturday and rival Texas A&M Monday night. Texas is an extremely young team with six of its nine rotation players in their first year.

The Longhorns are just 3-7-1 ATS in conference play, including a dismal 0-6 ATS as favorites. Texas is 3-1-1 ATS as an underdog in conference play, and considering its knack for playing in close games, its ATS success should hold firm.

Big East

Seton Hall got off to a fast start this season, with the Pirates opening 15-2 SU. However, things have been rough lately. Seton Hall has lost its last six games, while going just 1-5 ATS in the process.

The Pirates played their last game without their best player, Herb Pope, who is dealing with a rib injury. Seton Hall needs a healthy Pope on the court in order to correct its offensive woes. Over their last five games, the Pirates are averaging just 55 points on 31.6 percent shooting – 24.8 percent from 3-point land.

Seton Hall is 6-3 ATS on its home court, and if Pope returns to health, the Pirates may turn things around against the spread if they become undervalued after the recent poor results.

Pac-12

UCLA forward Travis Wear suffered a high ankle sprain in the Bruins’ 71-69 loss at Washington last Thursday night. That’s not good for a thin UCLA team that plays just a seven-man rotation.

Wear was the Bruins’ second-leading scorer and rebounder, averaging 11.8 points and 5.2 rebounds per game. Ironically, UCLA won its first game outside of the state of California this season on Saturday without Wear on the court. The Bruins beat Washington State 63-60.

Luckily for UCLA, it plays three consecutive home games before hitting the road for three games to close out February. UCLA is a perfect 4-0 ATS at home in conference play, but keep an eye on Wear’s status as he is an integral part of the Bruins’ success.

SEC

Mississippi State has three terrific players in Arnett Moultrie, Dee Bost, and Rodney Hood. All three of those guys average over 11 points per game. But they also average over 34 minutes per game because the Bulldogs have been playing the majority of the season with little depth on their bench.

However, that’s about to change as key reserves Shaun Smith and Deville Smith have come back from their injuries. Mississippi State was a pointspread machine from mid November to late December, when it went 8-2 ATS. But since the rotation was shortened, the Bulldogs have gone just 2-7 ATS, including a 2-6 ATS mark in conference play.

Mississippi State may become undervalued because of its recent play, and with the reserves back in the mix, the Bulldogs may get back to covering spreads.

Pick 'n' roll: Thursday's best NBA bets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Oklahoma City Thunder at Sacramento Kings (6.5, 204)

Even though Monta Ellis grabbed the spotlight Tuesday night, the Oklahoma City Thunder had the last laugh.

Ellis went off for 48 points, hitting 18 of his 29 attempts from the floor, but the Thunder hung around and Kevin Durant banked in a trey with 14.2 seconds left on the clock to give Oklahoma City a 119-116, covering as a 2-point favorite.

"It's one of those things where you shoot it and you're like, 'Aw, that's a terrible shot.' When it went in, I was kind of surprised," Durant told reporters.

It’s been that kind of season for the Thunder, who are averaging better than 101 points per game and are 9-6 against the spread on the road this season.

Sacramento has looked better lately, but we don't think they'll be up to this kind of challenge yet. The Thunder have covered in four of their last five meetings with the Kings.

Pick: Thunder

Houston Rockets at Phoenix Suns (-3, 200.5)

Steve Nash knows what you were thinking when his Suns nearly blew a 21-point lead in the third quarter in Tuesday’s game against the Milwaukee Bucks, the club’s second in as many nights.

"I'm sure Vegas looks at that and says, 'Scheduling loss,'" Nash told the Arizona Republic Tuesday. "For us to go from up 21 to down four, that was a pretty memorable win."

The Suns did manage to come back for 107-105 win as 8-point underdogs, with Nash hitting the game-winning bucket with five seconds left in the fourth quarter. He finished with 18 points and 11 assists to cap off a pretty impressive 38th birthday.

Phoenix has now won four of its last five and look like they’ll be competitive as long as Nash keeps playing like he’s a decade younger than he is.

These are two of the best under teams in the Association and this total looks a little high to us.

Game of the day: Los Angeles Lakers at Boston Celtics
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Lakers at Boston Celtics (-3.5, 177.5)

THE STORY
: The NBA's most historic rivalry takes place again on Thursday when the Boston Celtics host the Los Angeles Lakers. Both traditional title contenders started the season slowly. While the Celtics are playing their best basketball of the season, the Lakers are still struggling to find their game. Boston has won nine of 10, including a season-high five in a row. The Lakers have lost their last two contests after winning three straight.

LINE: Books opened Boston as high as a 4-point favorite, but that has been bet down to as low as -3. The total was posted at 176.5 points and has climbed to 177.5.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, TNT

ABOUT THE LAKERS (14-11, 11-14 ATS): Kobe Bryant moved into fifth place on the NBA’s career scoring list in Monday's loss to Philadelphia. To reach the feat, Bryant passed former teammate Shaquille O'Neal. Los Angeles is 1-2 on its six-game road trip which also has stops in New York and Toronto. The Lakers have looked very ordinary this season, particularly on the road where they are 3-9. Coach Mike Brown will return from his one-game suspension for making contact with an official in Saturday's loss to Utah.

ABOUT THE CELTICS (14-10, 12-12 ATS): Paul Pierce moved past Larry Bird into second place on Boston's all-time scoring list in Tuesday's win over Charlotte. Rajon Rondo's return has been the biggest thing to happen to the Celtics in the last week. Rondo had 14 assists for the second straight contest on Tuesday and didn't commit a turnover in 33 minutes. He's averaging 11.7 assists and 7.3 points in three games since returning from a wrist injury. Rondo, who missed eight games with the injury, is averaging 9.8 assists and 3.8 turnovers this season.

TRENDS:

* Under is 5-0 in the last five meetings in Boston.
* Under is 6-1 in the last seven meetings.
* Lakers are 6-14-1 ATS in the last 21 meetings.

BUZZER BEATERS:

1. Lakers C Andrew Bynum had 20 points and 20 rebounds Monday. He's averaging 20.8 points and 13.2 rebounds in his last four games.

2. Celtics F Kevin Garnett has made 26 of 40 shots from the field and is averaging 20.3 points in his last three games.

3. The teams split their two meetings last season with each winning on the road.

PREDICTION: Celtics 98, Lakers 96

NHL betting: Top 4 teams helping hot under trend
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With the trade deadline looming at the end of the month and teams already starting to look ahead to the playoff picture, every goal is becoming more and more crucial.

Maybe that’s part of the reason why the under is likely the hottest bet in professional sports over the last month. Ahead of Wednesday night’s action, 61.1 percent of NHL games in the last 30 days have played under their respective totals.

Here are four teams that have been filling under bettors’ pockets this season.

All stats current through Tuesday’s games.

St. Louis Blues – over/under record: 12-29-11

When you’re playing for Ken Hitchcock, you’re going to be responsible defensively on the ice or you’ll spend a lot of time in the press box. This team is buying into his system. Brian Elliott and Jaroslav Halak are offering healthy competition for each other in goal and the offense is producing 2.2 goals per game with a power play that ranks 22nd in the league. Oddsmakers are going to keep setting 5-goal totals for Blues games and they’ll keep playing under.

Los Angeles Kings – over/under record: 11-30-13

The Kings continue to struggle offensively with a league-low 118 goals for and a power play that’s clicking at a 15.7-percent clip. Goaltender Jonthan Quick is a Vezina Trophy candidate with a 1.85 goals against average, a .935 save percentage, and six shutouts, so don’t look for the Kings to give up many goals moving forward. Total bettors should keep a close eye on the offense though. The Kings have scored at least three goals in three of their last four and do have the talent to break out at any time, especially if they can swing a deal for another sniper in the next few weeks.

Calgary Flames – over/under record: 19-31-3

Just three Flames have at least 13 goals this season – Jarome Iginla (20), Olli Jokinen (13) and Curtis Glencross (18). The club hoped trading for Mike Cammalleri would help kickstart the offense, but he has just two points in eight games with Calgary and the team continues to have trouble getting pucks to the net, ranking 25th at 27.6 shots per game. The Flames still have solid goaltending with Miikka Kiprusoff and with this lack of offensive firepower, the only way they can stay competitive is to try to win 2-1 games. They had played under in six of their last seven ahead of Wednesday’s action.

Winnipeg Jets – over/under record: 21-33-1

The Jets are another team that’s trying to grind out wins to remain in the playoff picture. They have scored two or fewer goals in seven straight games and Blake Wheeler leads the team with only 36 points in 53 games. Be careful playing under when this club is on the road though. The Jets have been a fantastic home bet all season, sticking to Claude Noel’s defensive model, but they’re terrible on the road and both Chris Mason and Ondrej Pavelec may fade down the stretch. This club has traveled more than any other this year and you have to think that's going to catch up with their legs eventually.

Ice picks: Thursday’s best NHL bets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

St. Louis Blues at New Jersey Devils (N/A)

The New Jersey Devils escaped with a much-needed two points Tuesday against the New York Rangers, but the victory didn't come without a lot of controversy.

Up 1-0 in the dying seconds of regulation, New York's Artem Anisimov scored what appeared to be the game’s tying goal, but the goal was disallowed because Marian Gaborik was whistled for goaltender interference.

A closer look shows that Gaborik was clearly pushed into Martin Brodeur by Devils defenseman Anton Volchenkov, though he didn't exactly see it that way.

"They have rules; you hit the goalie, you get a penalty," Volchenkov told reporters. "I saw him push Marty. I maybe pushed him a little, but I didn't push so hard."

At any rate, the Devils have now five straight games, pulling within just two points of the fourth-place Penguins ahead of Wednesday night’s action.

St. Louis dropped three of four before getting back on track with a 3-1 win over Ottawa Tuesday.

Pick: Under

Los Angeles Kings at Florida Panthers (-110, 5)

With a glance at the Los Angeles Kings’ roster, it’s hard to believe they sit last in the NHL averaging only 2.1 goals per game.

So far, Darryl Sutter hasn’t been able to ignite the offense, though he’s not dumping on the team’s forwards anymore.

"I know we talk about a lack of goal scoring, but I think we will score more—or, this team is capable of scoring more—if our defense would move the pucks quicker, get to them quicker, and move them more like the old hockey school, on the tape," Sutter told reporters.

The first pass out of the defensive zone shouldn’t be much of an issue with blueliners like Drew Doughty and Jack Johnson on the roster either. Still, despite the club’s problems, they were still in seventh place in the competitive Western Conference ahead of Wednesday's action.

The Kings have haven’t lost to Florida since 2002 and shouldn't sputter here either.

Pick: Kings
