Preview: Rockies (60-84) at Dodgers (83-60)
Game: 2
Venue: Dodger Stadium
Date: September 15, 2015 10:10 PM EDT

Plagued by injuries, the Los Angeles Dodgers continue relying on some top prospects to help their push toward the postseason.

Looking to maintain their surge, the Dodgers try for a fourth consecutive victory Tuesday night against the visiting Colorado Rockies.

Scott Schebler homered for the third time in 10 career games and shortstop Corey Seager stayed hot with two hits as Los Angeles (83-60) beat Colorado 4-1 on Monday. Owners of a 7 1/2-game lead in the NL West, the Dodgers have won 16 of 20 and are 20-6 at home since last losing a series there July 3-5 to the New York Mets.

The Dodgers' prized prospect, Seager is batting .432 with a homer, six doubles and seven RBIs in 11 games since making his major-league debut Sept. 3.

"I'm just getting good pitches to hit right now, putting good swings on them, and they're falling in," he said. "So I can't complain."

Seager is playing in place of the injured Jimmy Rollins (hand), who manager Don Mattingly said will return to the starting lineup when he's healthy. However, it's uncertain when that will be.

"(Seager's) played more than we thought because of injuries and done a good job," Mattingly told MLB's official website.

Half of Schebler's six hits in 23 career at-bats this season have left the park. His two-run shot in the eighth inning Monday broke open a one-run contest.

That pair has certainly helped matters while Rollins, Howie Kendrick (hamstring), Yasiel Puig (hamstring) and Carl Crawford (hamstring) continue to miss time with injuries.

Los Angeles' Brett Anderson (9-8, 3.36 ERA) will take the ball following a few extra days' rest since overcoming four walks and four hits to allow one run before leaving a 5-1 win at San Diego on Sept. 6 after 5 2-3 innings due to a cramp in his leg.

"I know I'm a sweater," Anderson told MLB's official website. "So I have to drink more fluids than most people, and I usually start two or three days before. I guess I just didn't get enough fluids."

Los Angeles has won the last three starts made by the left-hander, who is 2-0 with a 2.08 ERA in those contests.

Anderson, who was limited to eight starts because of finger and back injuries in 2014 during his only season with the Rockies (60-84), is 1-0 with a 1.74 ERA in two outings against his former team this year.

Nolan Arenado is 2 for 5 against Anderson, though he's gone 3 for 20 in the last five games. Arenado leads the NL with 38 home runs but has just two in nine games since homering in six straight contests.

After allowing three runs against San Francisco on Sept. 3 to record his second complete game in four starts, Colorado's Chris Rusin (5-8, 5.14) gave up six runs and eight hits in three innings of Wednesday's 11-4 loss at San Diego.

"I just didn't make my pitches," said Rusin, who is 0-6 with a 6.10 ERA in nine road starts this season. "Hopefully, I figure it out sooner rather than later."

The left-hander is making his first appearance against Los Angeles since 2013.

Preview: Reds (60-83) at Giants (76-68)
Game: 2
Venue: AT&T Park
Date: September 15, 2015 10:15 PM EDT

It wasn't long ago when San Francisco's Chris Heston had entered the discussion for NL Rookie of the Year following a dazzling stretch that included a no-hitter.

However, that talk has subsided with the right-hander struggling down the stretch.

Although it's likely to be too little, too late, Heston will try to end a string of five straight losses while leading the Giants to their fifth straight win Tuesday night against the visiting Cincinnati Reds.

Heston (11-10, 3.55 ERA) went 9-2 with a 3.05 ERA over 14 starts from May 12-July 27. He pitched the 17th no-hitter in franchise history June 9 against the New York Mets, gaining consideration amongst an outstanding field in the race for top rookie honors.

The 27-year-old, though, has shown fatigue late in his first full big-league season, making it out of the fifth inning only twice over his last seven starts with a 5.08 ERA. Heston even had a scheduled start skipped in late August amid his current skid.

"I'm just trying to take positives from every start into the next one," he told MLB's official website after lasting 4 2-3 innings in a 2-1 loss at Arizona on Wednesday.

In his only career start versus Cincinnati, he allowed five runs over two innings in a 9-8 road victory May 17.

The Giants (76-68) are in search of their longest winning streak since a six-game run in late July, but they're still 7 1/2 games back of the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West and seven behind the Chicago Cubs for the second wild card with 18 remaining.

Matt Duffy had two doubles and two RBIs, and Brandon Belt went 2 for 3 with a triple and two RBIs in Monday's series-opening 5-3 victory. Belt is batting .404 with 18 RBIs in his last 26 home games, while Angel Pagan has gone 6 for 13 in his last three.

San Francisco has batted .318 and averaged 8.0 runs while winning the first four of this nine-game homestand. The club is getting it done without Brandon Crawford (calf, side), Joe Panik (back), Hunter Pence (strained left oblique), Nori Aoki (concussion) and Gregor Blanco (concussion).

"It runs in cycles," manager Bruce Bochy said. "This is more the club that we are, the way we're playing at home."

Cincinnati's all-rookie rotation has posted a 6.96 ERA over its last 13 on the road, but John Lamb (1-3, 5.18) can end that trend by building on his first big-league victory.

The left-hander, who was acquired from Kansas City in the Johnny Cueto trade, overcame a season-high six walks and allowed three runs over five innings in Thursday's 11-0 win over St. Louis.

"I certainly feel like I got away with something," Lamb said.

Jay Bruce hit his 21st home run and Ramon Cabrera had four hits in his fifth career game Monday as the Reds dropped their 10th in 15 road games. Bruce, Todd Frazier and Brandon Phillips went a combined 5 for 5 off Heston at Great American Ball Park in May.

Joey Votto has reached base safely in 33 straight games, the third-longest active streak in the majors. Billy Hamilton, however, is day to day after leaving the opener with a sore shoulder.

The NL Central-worst Reds are looking to avoid their first series loss at AT&T Park since 2010.

Pirates cruising to W's against Cubs behind Cole

Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander Gerrit Cole loves facing the Chicago Cubs, evidenced by the Buccos winning six out of his last seven starts versus the Cubbies.

Both sides will renew acquaintances Tuesday at PNC Park with Jason Hammel slated to counter on the mound opposite of Cole.

Sportsbooks were offering Pittsburgh in the -155 at the time of writing. The total had not yet hit the board.

Kelly has been lights out for Red Sox bettors

It's been a lost season for the Boston Red Sox, but Sox backers have found some relief when Joe Kelly has taken the mound lately.

Boston is undefeated in Kelly's last eight outings. He's the probable starte Tuesday versus Ubaldo Jimenez and the Baltimore Orioles.

The BoSox are presently slight +103 moneyline pups at Pinnacle Sports.

Phillies' Hernandez done for season

The Philadelphia Phillies placed second baseman Cesar Hernandez on the 60-day disabled list on Monday, one day after he dislocated his left thumb in a game against the Chicago Cubs.

The season-ending injury occurred when Hernandez collided with Chicago's Anthony Rizzo. Hernandez is slated to meet with a hand specialist to determine the severity of the injury.

Hernandez batted .272 with 19 stolen bases in 127 games. His solid play helped prompt Philadelphia to deal stalwart Chase Utley to the Los Angeles Dodgers in mid-August.

The Phillies also recalled infielder Chase d'Arnaud from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Home teams have a big night on the diamond

It was a night to back home teams in Major League Baseball action with the hosting teams going an impressive 9-3 straight up Monday night.

That's good for a cash rate of a whopping 75 percent last night, with only the Nationals, Yankees and Padres able to pull off road wins.

White Sox don't plan to shut down Sale

CHICAGO -- The White Sox don't currently plan on shutting down ace Chris Sale early this season, despite their pending elimination from postseason contention rapidly approaching.

Sale has been shut down at various points during previous seasons to spare his arm excess workload, but manager Robin Ventura said he's not necessarily looking to do that this year.

"It's mostly how he feels," Ventura said. "That's the most important thing. We wouldn't push him to do something. You're not running him out there for (stats)."

Sale has 250 strikeouts through his first 28 starts and would have an outside shot of reaching the 300-strikeout plateau if he makes four more outings. That hasn't been done since Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling each eclipsed that milestone in 2002.

Sale has also thrown 187 2/3 innings and remains on pace to surpass the 200 innings mark for the second time in his career.

Yanks, Rays clash in TBay

September 15, 2015

NEW YORK YANKEES (79-64) at TAMPA BAY RAYS (69-74)

Sportsbook.ag Line: New York +100, Tampa Bay -110, Total: 7.5

The Yankees will be going for their third straight victory when they face the Rays in Tampa Bay on Tuesday.

New York had an extremely disappointing series against the Blue Jays, losing their first three games before defeating Toronto 5-0 in the final game of the series on Sunday. The Yankees did, however, win the first game of this three-game set against the Rays and have now won two straight after losing their previous five contests. Tampa Bay, meanwhile, has lost three straight games and six of its past eight. This team is not showing much fight recently and has scored just one run in the past two games.

RHP Adam Warren (6-6, 3.29 ERA, 88 K) will be starting this game for the Yankees and he’s going to be going up against RHP Jake Odorizzi (7-8, 3.21 ERA, 131 K) of the Rays. New York has gotten the best of this matchup on the year, going 11-6 overall and 5-3 when playing in Tampa Bay. Benefiting the Yankees in this game is the fact that they are 26-17 against the money line when facing an AL starting pitcher with an ERA of 3.50 or better this season. The Rays are also a lousy 1-6 against the money line when Odorizzi faces a team that is averaging 1.25 or more homers per game this season.

The Yankees really could have used a better performance against the Jays last series, but they’ve won two straight contests and will need to continue to win games in order to stay in the AL East race. Adam Warren is going to be starting for the team on Tuesday and it will be his first start since Jun. 25. He has pitched well out of the bullpen and allowed just three earned runs in seven innings of work when he started in Tampa Bay on May 13.

Offensively, the Yankees got a big spark from rookie OF Slade Heathcott (.389, 2 HR, 6 RBI) in a 4-1 victory over this Rays team on Monday. It was his first action since May 27 and he hit a game-winning three-run homer. 3B Alex Rodriguez (.257, 31 HR, 82 RBI) also came up huge for the Yankees, tying the game up with an RBI double on Monday. He is 4-for-10 with a homer and four RBI over the past three games and will need to continue to produce at the plate moving forward.

OF Brett Gardner (.269, 16 HR, 65 RBI) must be a bit more consistent for the Yankees as they enter the final stretch this season. He is hitless in the past two games after racking up three homers and eight RBI in the previous three games for New York. He is a much-needed bat at the top of the order and the Yankees need him to consistently be on the bases.

Jake Odorizzi is coming off of a very good outing against the Tigers on Sep. 9, allowing no earned runs in six innings of work. He struck out six batters and walked just one in the game. He did struggle against the Yankees in the previous start, giving up five earned runs in 6.2 innings pitched. He allowed three homers in the game, but should be better in a friendlier pitching environment at home.

If the Rays are going to find a way to end their struggles this season then 3B Evan Longoria (.270, 19 HR, 68 RBI) will need to be a lot better. He is one of the Rays’ best hitters and is just 0-for-9 over the past two contests. Longoria also has just one RBI in the past five games and that type of play is not going to cut it.

2B Logan Forsythe (.283, 16 HR, 59 RBI) is the other guy that Tampa Bay will be counting on to turn things around. Forsythe has the highest batting average on the team this year, but he is just 1-for-10 in the past three games. He’ll need to start getting back on base soon or this team will continue to struggle scoring runs.

Indians making late playoff push

September 15, 2015

CLEVELAND (AP) By the time Indians manager Terry Francona hops on that motorized scooter he rides from his downtown apartment to Progressive Field on game days, his mind is racing and his stomach's churning.

He wouldn't have it any other way.

''There's nothing better than coming to the ballpark and being nervous and excited,'' he said. ''That's the best feeling. I love that feeling.''

With a September surge, the Indians have Francona feeling great.

Two months ago, they were in a baffling funk. Cleveland's offense couldn't match the club's solid starting pitching, and a season of high expectations - the Indians were Sports Illustrated's pick to win the World Series - appeared doomed.

But following a few trades, and energized by the arrival of All-Star-in-the-making Francisco Lindor and a few other youngsters, the Indians have battled back to .500 and are in the thick of the wild-card race.

An 8-3 win on Monday night over AL Central-leading Kansas City in the opener of a four-game series was Cleveland's 13th victory in 18 games and moved the Indians back to .500 (71-71) and within 4 1/2 games of the second wild card.

And although they've got to slug it out with several other teams to make October's postseason, Francona, who deserves much of the credit for the turnaround, is proud of how his team has responded.

''We were frustrated for four months, there's no getting around it,'' Francona said. ''What we did, which was good, was we took that and we made it better. Again, I wish we had been 20 games over .500, which we weren't. Rather than pack up the bags and say, `Well,' I like what we've done.''

When it began to look as if the playoffs weren't possible, Indians general manager Chris Antonetti began planning for the future by trading veterans Brandon Moss, David Murphy and Marc Rzepczynski before the July 31 for prospects. Then, Antonetti dealt Nick Swisher and Michael Bourn - a pair of disappointing free-agent signings - to Atlanta on Aug. 7.

The departures of Swisher and Bourn, along with their massive contracts, seemed to unburden the Indians, who have gotten major contributions from Lindor and fellow rookie third baseman Giovanny Urshela as well as Abraham Almonte and Chris Johnson, who both came over in trades. Also, third baseman Lonnie Chisenhall has blossomed after switching to right field, a move that may have saved his career.

The Indians have experience at late-season comebacks.

In 2013, they won their last 10 to clinch a wild-card spot. This climb appears more treacherous as they have six games left with the playoff-bound Royals and seven against Minnesota, another one of the clustered teams fighting for a wild-card entry.

Like his teammates, the gifted 21-year-old Lindor, who has batted .309 with eight homers, 37 RBIs and led the team in smiles since being promoted in June, believes the Indians can finish what they've started.

''We're not going to stop playing until we're done,'' said Lindor, who has built a strong case for rookie of the year consideration. ''These games are fun. We're not thinking about next season or anything else. All that matters is what we're doing now. We're not only playing for the name on the back of our jersey. We're playing for the name on the front. We want to win.''

For Francona, the Indians' unexpected push has been rewarding. At the time of the trades, Francona didn't look far ahead. He wanted his clubhouse to stay focused on this season, not the future and remained confident the Indians would come around.

''When we started talking about things in the second half, I tried to be real careful in what I said,'' Francona said. ''Because, regardless of who's playing, I never wanted to sacrifice winning. It just kind of goes to show you, if you give yourself a chance pitching, which we normally do, and our defense has drastically improved, and when players pay attention to detail, we've given ourselves a chance to win - a lot.''

They may come up short, and the Indians, who are 64-57 since May 1, haven't convinced many skeptical Cleveland fans they're legitimate - Monday's series opener only drew 10,356.

Still, their rally has Francona's insides filled with butterflies like the orange-and-black winged monarchs who have stopped at Progressive Field during their 2,000-mile trek from Canada to Mexico.

''It's made it gratifying for all of us,'' he said. ''You can see more energy, not just in the players, but even with the coaches. It kind of gets contagious. The guys, even though it's September, they're willing to learn. The younger guys are out running the bases during batting practice. We're not dragging them out there. It's been enjoyable.''

King Felix usually has Angels' number

The Seattle Mariners have gone 9-1 in Felix Hernandez's previous 10 starts against the Los Angeles Angels. The two American League West rivals will play the second of a three-game set Tuesday night in Seattle.

In his career, Hernandez is just 14-13 with a 3.27 ERA and 1.16 WHIP in 44 starts versus the Halos. This season, however, Hernandez is 3-0 with a pristine 0.67 ERAS and stellar 0.78 WHIP in four starts.

The Mariners are presently being offered around the -172 vicinity while the Angels, who are expected to start Nicholas Tropeano, are around +158.

----------------------------

Diamondbacks winning with Marquez behind the plate

The Arizona Diamondbacks have gone 6-0 in their last six games with umpire Alfonso Marquez behind the plate. That's where Marquez will be as the Snakes host the San Diego Padres at Chase Field Tuesday evening.

Marquez worked the May 18 meeting between the Dbacks and Miami Marlins, which Arizona won 3-2. The streak of six wins in Marquez's games dates back to early in the 2012 season.

Tyson Ross is the probable starter for the Friars (-104) while the Dbacks (-104) are expected to counter with Jhoulys Chacin.

------------------------------

Samardzija has lost six straight home starts

Chicago White Sox starter Jeff Samardzija has been getting roughed up at home, losing his last six starts at U.S. Cellular Field.

Samardzija just hasn't been comfortable on the mound, pitching to a massive 8.33 ERA in those six home starts.

Samardzija will try to lower that number when he and the White Sox host the Oakland Athletics Tuesday night. The A's will counter with Aaron Brooks.

The Pale Hose are currently -159 favorites.
