Tuesday's Late Tips

June 30, 2015

Yankees at Angels – 10:05 PM EST

Los Angeles avenged a three-game sweep in the Bronx earlier this month by knocking off the Yankees on Monday night, 4-1. The Angels are starting to pick things up from a pitching standpoint of late, allowing nine runs in the past five games, while cashing the ‘under’ in eight of the previous nine contests overall. New York’s offense has stumbled the last two games, scoring one run each in losses to the Astros and Angels, while falling to 2-3 on their seven-game road trip.

Ivan Nova (1-0, 0.00 ERA) is making his second start of the season for the Yankees, coming off a scoreless effort in a 10-2 home victory over the Phillies. The right-hander scattered three hits in 6.2 innings of work, even though he recorded only one strikeout in the win. Nova is facing the Angels for the first time since August 2013, as he allowed 10 hits and three earned runs in 7.1 innings of an 11-3 blowout of Los Angeles.

The Angels counter with southpaw Andrew Heaney (0-0, 1.50 ERA), who is also starting for the second time this season. Heaney delivered a gem in his Los Angeles debut, giving up four hits and one earned run in six innings of work in a 2-1 extra innings victory over Houston. The left-hander has yet to record a win in his short career (six starts), facing a Yankees’ squad that owns a 3-7 record in their last past 10 road contests.

Rockies at Athletics – 10:05 PM EST

Oakland snapped a three-game skid by blasting Colorado last night, 7-1 as -170 home favorites, jumping out to a 4-0 lead after one inning. In spite of losing all three times to the Royals this past weekend, the A’s have won 10 of their past 15 games, while scoring at least six runs nine times in this stretch. The Rockies have been the worst team in the league during interleague play this season, putting together an 0-6 mark against American League opponents, while dropping 13 straight road interleague games since May 2014.

Oakland ace Sonny Gray (9-3, 2.09 ERA) was expected to take the mound, but got scratched early in the afternoon. Taking Gray's place tonight is right-hander Chris Bassitt (0-0, 3.38 ERA), who is making his first start of the season. Bassitt spent last season with the White Sox, as Chicago compiled a 3-2 record in his five starts, all coming past late August. The former University of Akron standout has appeared in five games out of the Oakland bullpen this season, facing a Colorado squad that is 2-6 in its last eight road games against right-handed starters.

The A’s are facing a left-handed starter at home for the first time since May 29, taking on Jorge De La Rosa (4-3, 5.15 ERA). The Rockies have fared well with the southpaw on the mound recently, compiling a 6-1 record in his last seven outings since May 16, including a victory as a +200 underdog at Los Angeles. De La Rosa has allowed two earned runs or less three of his past four outings, while coming off a no-decision in his last start against Arizona, a 6-4 home victory.

Mariners at Padres – 10:10 PM EST

These two West Coast teams begin a brief two-game set at Petco Park after the two squads split a two-game series last month in Seattle. The Mariners remain in Southern California after losing two of three contests to the Angels this past weekend, while scoring just seven runs. The Padres failed to pull off a three-game sweep of the Diamondbacks by losing on Sunday, 6-4, as San Diego owns a 4-1 record in its last five tries off a defeat.

San Diego looks to break through in interleague play at home, failing to win in five tries this season against American League foes. Ian Kennedy (4-6, 5.09 ERA) was shelled early the last time he faced the M’s at Safeco Field back on May 12, allowing four runs in the first inning of an 11-4 rout. The San Diego right-hander has pitched better at home of late, beating the Mets and Dodgers, while allowing just three earned runs in 13 innings of work.

Mike Montgomery (2-2, 2.04 ERA) is coming off the best start of his short career, tossing a complete game shutout and striking out 10 in a 7-0 blanking of the Royals last Tuesday. The Seattle southpaw is making his second road start, silencing the Houston lineup in an 8-1 triumph as a +120 underdog earlier this month. Montgomery is facing a San Diego team that owns a 1-4 record in its past five home series openers, but the Mariners have dropped four of five road contests against National League opponents.

Midseason Report

June 30, 2015

First Half Roundup

162 games is a long season. Every year teams sprint out of the gate in April and May with October dreams, only to come back to the pack by July. It's not a sprint, of course, but a marathon, where a strong balance of pitching, defense and offense carries the best teams into the postseason. Injuries, too, are key, as well as trades made before the July deadline. Teams have figured out their strengths and weaknesses now and are beginning to look for pieces to add before the deadline, while others are figuring out whom to dump. Here's a look at some recent baseball surging and slumping teams.

Royals:

Didn’t everyone bail on last year’s AL champs? “Lost too many players, plus they were a fluke…” Well the 2015 Royals are pretty good, too, giving Detroit and surprising Minnesota a run for their money in the AL Central. The offense has not taken a step back, still running around the base paths ranked in the Top 10 in on base percentage.

The Royals are 19-7 as a dog and 35-18 away against righties. The one concern is quality starting pitching, with Edinson Volquez walking too many and Danny Duffy and Jeremy Guthrie regressing. The Royals still rely on a lights out pen, but will they wear down as the summer gets hotter and the workload longer?

Mets:

The NY Mets have gotten Matt Harvey back and he’s anchored a strong staff behind Jonathon Niese, Jacob deGrom and the amazing Bartolo Colon, who adds hundreds of pounds and years but never seems to break down. The Mets are 38-13 as home chalk.

However, this offense is not great, bottom 10 in runs scored and on base percentage. They can struggle against good pitchers and note that the Mets are 13-30 against a pitcher with a WHIP less than 1.15. They probably will be in the market for a productive bat in July.

Astros:

Wow! A bold pick to win the 2018 World Series a few years ago by some, Houston is way ahead of schedule. Diminutive 25-year old 2B Jose Altuve is having a monster season with the bat and stealing bases with his legs. The balanced lineup is hitting almost twice as many homers as opponents. Astros centerfielder Jake Marisnick turned an unassisted double play in a 3-2 win over the Los Angeles Angels.

The Houston pitching staff has a pair of young aces in Dallas Keuchel and Collin McHugh helping the team rip off an impressive 7 game road win streak. Sports bettors take note: the Astros are 16-5 when Keuchel is an underdog and 20-6 under the total following a defeat.

Mariners:

Seattle was the talk of the offseason, a young team ready to roll out West. Any team with an ace like Felix Hernandez won’t have long losing skids. However, the Mariners have fallen short, without much in the rotation beyond King Felix and J.A. Happ. And with Fernando Rodney as a closer, their manager needs a trunk full of blindfolds and antacid.

The offense, too, has been a huge problem, bottom 10 in runs and OBP. Kyle Seager and Nelson Cruz are doing their part but getting little help. Seattle is 37-15-2 under the total at home in spacious Safeco Field.

Pirates:

What is going on with Pittsburgh? This young team was supposed to take off in 2015. They have an impressive rotation of A.J. Burnett, Gerrit Cole and Francisco Liriano, anchoring a pitching staff averaging close of 9 strikeouts per 9 innings. And the Pirates are 38-18 at home against a righty starter, so why aren’t they running away with the division?

Ah yes, offense, the other half of the game. The Pirates haven’t hit, bottom 14 in runs scored, slugging and on-base percentage. Might be a good time to go shopping for a bat -- and a team to look at under the total in the second half?

Red Sox:

Boston spent a lot in the offseason bug management hasn’t gotten its money’s worth. Like last year they are good at drawing walks and little else. They started April 7-3 with the owner pointing out that “Clay Buchholz is an ace.” It’s been all downhill since, with a lack of clutch hitting they experienced in 2014, an injury to Hanley Ramirez and a dreadful pitching staff. The poor performance of Buchholz and the other starters have already cost the pitching coach his job. More pink slips will follow if they don’t turn it around and a July fire sale wouldn’t surprise.

A's scratch RHP Gray due to illness

June 30, 2015

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) The Oakland Athletics scratched starter Sonny Gray because of an illness and brought up right-hander Chris Bassitt from Triple-A Nashville to face Colorado.

The A's announced that Gray will miss Tuesday's game because of flu-like symptoms. Gray (9-3) is the AL leader with a 2.09 ERA.

Bassitt joins the A's for the second time this season. He had a 3.38 ERA in five relief appearances earlier this season. He is 2-6 with a 3.71 ERA in 12 games for Nashville.

A corresponding roster move will be announced later Tuesday.

Giants' Cain, Peavy to return this week

June 30, 2015

MIAMI (AP) Matt Cain and Jake Peavy are headed back to work for the San Francisco Giants. The two pitchers will start this week following lengthy stays on the disabled list.

Manager Bruce Bochy said Tuesday that Cain is scheduled to start Thursday against the Miami Marlins. Cain hasn't pitched since July 2014. He underwent elbow surgery last year and has been sidelined this season with a strained flexor tendon.

Peavy, out since April 17 with a strained back, is to start Friday at Washington.

Cain will replace right-hander Tim Lincecum, who will be placed on the disabled list with a bruised right forearm after being hit by a line drive Saturday.

Bochy said the Giants decided against giving Peavy another rehab start in the minors before activating him.

Giants designate McGehee for assignment

June 30, 2015

MIAMI (AP) Casey McGehee, the NL Comeback Player of the Year in 2014, will need another comeback.

The veteran infielder was designated for assignment Tuesday by the San Francisco Giants shortly before they began a three-game series at Miami. The Giants purchased the contract of infielder Ehire Adrianza from Triple-A Sacramento.

McGehee, 32, lost his starting job at third base to Matt Duffy and was demoted to the minors earlier this season. After returning he went 5 for 17, and he's batting .213 with two homers in 49 games. Despite playing part-time he has grounded into 15 double plays, tied for most in the majors.

Adrianza, a switch-hitter, has spent all of this season with Sacramento, batting .316 with three home runs.

Rangers activate Hamilton, Gallo demoted

June 30, 2015

BALTIMORE (AP) Josh Hamilton has been activated from the 15-day disabled list by the Texas Rangers, who placed the outfielder in the starting lineup for Tuesday night's game against the Orioles.

Hamilton was sidelined since May 31 with a strained left hamstring. He has played in only seven games this season, batting .273 with two homers and five RBIs.

He was fifth in the lineup and in left field against Baltimore.

Texas made room for Hamilton on the 25-man roster by optioning rookie Joey Gallo to Triple-A Round Rock. Gallo had his contract purchased from Double-A Frisco on June 2 and hit .218 with five home runs and 13 RBIs over 25 games in his major league debut.

He ended his stint with a 7-for-47 skid that included 27 strikeouts.

Phils' Mackanin to manage rest of season

June 30, 2015

PHILADELPHIA (AP) The Philadelphia Phillies say Pete Mackanin will stay as their manager for the rest of the season.

General manager Ruben Amaro made the announcement Tuesday.

Mackanin took over on an interim basis last Friday after manager Ryne Sandberg resigned.

At 27-51, the Phillies had the worst record in the majors going into Tuesday night's home game against Milwaukee.

This is Mackanin's third stint as an interim manager after working in a similar role previously with the Reds and Pirates.

The Phillies also added Jorge Velandia to their coaching staff.

Sandberg left three days before the Phillies introduced Andy MacPhail as the team's president in waiting.

MacPhail will spend the next three months evaluating the organization before replacing Pat Gillick, who helped pick him. The status of Amaro, who's in the last year of his contract, remains uncertain.
