Blue Jays-White Sox Preview

(AP) -- Having finally scored a bevy of runs at home following a record streak, the Chicago White Sox might keep rolling when they face one of the worst road pitchers in the majors.

The White Sox will get a matchup against R.A. Dickey to finish off their four-game series with the Toronto Blue Jays on Thursday.

Chicago (38-44) had scored four runs or fewer in a team-worst 24 consecutive home games dating back to May 10 before a 7-6 victory in 11 innings Wednesday. Adam Eaton finished off his team's sixth win in eight contests with his sixth homer of the season and had the tying infield single in the sixth.

"In the past week and a half, we've been playing better baseball," Eaton said. "We've been battling and scoring more runs lately, but at least our pitching has been there."

The White Sox will next get to face Dickey, 0-6 with a 6.04 ERA in eight road starts for the worst record there among qualifying starters. He allowed five runs - four in the first inning - and matched a career high by giving up 11 hits over 5 2-3 innings in an 8-3 loss in Detroit on Saturday, his third in a row.

"Sometimes that's the nature of the game. You have a rough first inning, sometimes you have rough fifth innings," Dickey told MLB's official website.

Dickey (3-9, 5.02 ERA) is 2-3 with an 8.69 ERA in six career starts against the White Sox, and his 8.21 ERA in 10 lifetime appearances versus Chicago is his worst against any opponent. He dropped to 0-2 with a 9.56 ERA in his past three matchups May 26.

The knuckleballer gave up five runs in five innings but the Blue Jays were leading when he exited that 10-9 victory. Dickey is 1-2 with a 13.50 ERA in three lifetime road starts against the White Sox with the most recent June 10, 2013.

In his next one, he'll try to keep Toronto (44-43) from dropping to .500 for the first time since it was 30-30 on June 9. The Blue Jays, losers in seven of 10, will face Jeff Samardzija (5-4, 4.33), who is reportedly drawing some trade interest from Toronto.

The right-hander yielded one run in 7 2-3 innings and matched a season high with nine strikeouts Saturday against Baltimore but did not get a decision in a 3-2 home win.

Samardzija has a 3.00 ERA in his last five games and has pitched at least seven innings in six straight, but he has one victory in that stretch, a 6-2 win in Minnesota on June 23. He's gotten a 4.00 run support average in his last five games but has received a combined four runs in 14 2-3 innings in his last two at home.

Samardzija, 1-0 with a 0.64 ERA in two starts against the Blue Jays, gave up one unearned run in seven innings in Toronto on May 27 but did not get a decision in a 5-3 win.

Jose Abreu will try to help him come away with a victory this time while extending a 10-game hit streak. Abreu's three home runs in six career at-bats off Dickey are his most against any pitcher.

Alexei Ramirez, 5 for 13 (.385) with two homers in this matchup, is batting .435 (10 for 23) in a seven-game hit streak to start this month.

Toronto's Russell Martin has four hits in his last nine at-bats against Samardzija, including a pair of doubles, but is 2 for 29 in his past 10 games.

Preview: Braves (42-43) at Rockies (35-49)
Game: 1
Venue: Coors Field
Date: July 09, 2015 8:40 PM EDT

The Atlanta Braves have played some of their best baseball in recent weeks thanks in large part to an increase in offensive production.

That figures to only continue at hitter-friendly Coors Field on Thursday night when the Braves open a four-game series with the slumping Colorado Rockies.

Atlanta (42-43) had averaged just 2.1 runs in 14 games since Freddie Freeman landed on the DL with a right wrist injury, but the team has gathered some offensive momentum since, scoring 4.6 runs per game in five contests.

That production was good enough for the Braves to take the first two in their three-game set with Milwaukee before a 6-5 defeat Wednesday.

Cameron Maybin has hit safely in eight straight while touting a .394 average in that span and Kelly Johnson has two homers and seven RBIs in his last five, as the Braves have won seven of 10.

Alex Wood (6-5, 3.34 ERA) enjoyed the bulk of that offensive support Saturday when he allowed four runs in six innings in a 9-5 win over Philadelphia. The left-hander preceded that outing with 7 1-3 shutout innings at Pittsburgh on June 28 - what Wood called "the best start of the year" - but was far less prideful of his most recent performance.

'Pretty ugly,' Wood told MLB's official website. 'Probably the worst I've had in terms of command of all my pitches.'

Wood has never pitched at Coors Field, and will oppose a Rockies lineup that has struggled to score lately. Colorado (35-49) tied for MLB's third-best offense with 4.6 runs per game through June 26, but the Rockies have since averaged just 2.6 runs while losing nine of their last 11.

Following a 3-7 road trip, Colorado was swept in a brief two-game home set with the Los Angeles Angels, losing 3-2 on Wednesday.

Nolan Arenado had three hits in the loss to remain a bright spot despite the club's struggles. The All-Star is hitting .326 with nine home runs and 21 RBIs in his last 23 games.

Troy Tulowitzki had a single Wednesday to extend his hitting streak to 20 games, matching Cleveland's Jason Kipnis for the longest in the majors this season. Tulowitzki has also reached base in 35 consecutive games.

On the mound for Colorado will be Kyle Kendrick (3-10, 6.00), who has allowed 23 home runs - most among qualifying starters - and ranks toward the bottom of baseball in ERA, WHIP (1.45) and strikeouts per nine innings (4.76).

Those numbers only grow uglier at home, where the right-hander has a 6.70 ERA, 1.58 WHIP and 4.10 strikeouts per nine, though he did win his last outing with four runs allowed over six innings in a 10-5 victory over Arizona on June 23.

Kendrick last faced Atlanta while with Philadelphia, and he beat the Braves with seven shutout innings on Sept 2.

The Braves have won 16 of 21 against the Rockies, but dropped the last two meetings at Coors Field.

Preview: Angels (46-38) at Mariners (39-46)
Game: 1
Venue: Safeco Field
Date: July 09, 2015 10:10 PM EDT

Seattle Mariners ace Felix Hernandez has an ERA under 1.00 in his last nine starts against the Los Angeles Angels.

Garrett Richards can say the same about his ERA in his last five outings versus the Mariners.

A premier pitching duel between Hernandez and Richards is on tap for Thursday night's opener of a four-game series at Safeco Field.

Hernandez (10-5, 3.02 ERA) is 5-0 with a 0.93 ERA in his last nine outings against Los Angeles, with the Mariners (39-46) winning the first eight of that stretch. He is 2-0 with a 0.90 ERA in three starts versus the Angels this year, with Albert Pujols 2 for 8 against him and Mike Trout 1 for 7 with a homer.

Trout batted .367 against Hernandez before this season while Pujols is 10 for 45 with 12 strikeouts overall in this matchup.

Three Los Angeles regulars are hitless against "King Felix" this year. Kole Calhoun is 0 for 8 and David Freese and Chris Iannetta are each 0 for 6.

The Angels were ecstatic after ending their eight-game slide when facing Hernandez in a 3-2, 10-inning win June 28. He struck out eight in six scoreless innings.

"He's got some of the best stuff I've ever seen," Calhoun said. "So anytime you can win a game that Felix starts, it's a good day."

Since becoming the AL's first 10-game winner June 17, Hernandez is 0-2 with a 2.75 ERA in three starts. The right-hander allowed two runs and a season-high 10 hits over seven innings in Saturday's 2-0 loss at Oakland.

He'll up against a formidable opponent in Richards (9-5, 3.35), who is 3-0 with a 0.97 ERA in his last five outings against Seattle, including 2-0 with a 1.84 ERA in two this year. Logan Morrison is 3 for 6 against Richards this year while teammates Seth Smith, Brad Miller, Nelson Cruz and Dustin Ackley all have career averages of .214 or worse in this matchup.

Richards has thrown 14 1-3 consecutive scoreless innings at Seattle. He improved to 4-1 with a 2.04 ERA in his last five outings after allowing one run over 7 2-3 innings in Friday's 8-2 victory at Texas.

Los Angeles seeks a season-high sixth straight win after sweeps in Texas and Colorado. Trout homered twice in Wednesday's 3-2 victory over the Rockies and Erick Aybar continued his torrid hitting by going 2 for 4.

'It's one of those nights,' Trout said. 'I got some pitches to hit and barreled them up.'

Aybar, a .220 hitter versus Hernandez, is 11 for 21 with four doubles in this win streak during which the Angels have averaged 9.2 runs and gone 25 for 56 (.446) with runners in scoring position.

Seattle, meanwhile, is batting a major league-low .205 with runners in scoring position this season after going 0 for 14 in Wednesday's 5-4 home loss to Detroit.

'You certainly would like to be more efficient in those spots,' said Trent Jewett, filling in as Mariners manager with Lloyd McClendon away from the team to attend his sister's funeral. 'We obviously had plenty of opportunities to push a lot more across.'

McClendon is expected to rejoin the team for this series.

Center fielder Austin Jackson, who is 1 for 13 against Richards, left with back spasms and is unlikely to play Thursday.

Aybar is hitting a team-best .385 in the season series with the Angels winning six of nine matchups.

Preview: Phillies (29-58) at Dodgers (48-38)
Game: 4
Venue: Dodger Stadium
Date: July 09, 2015 10:10 PM EDT

Zack Greinke doesn't care about potentially starting the All-Star Game for the first time. Instead, he's looking to continue the most dominant stretch of his career Thursday night against the lowly Philadelphia Phillies.

Greinke (7-2, 1.48 ERA) owns the lowest ERA in the majors, and his 0.89 WHIP and .200 batting average against are among the lowest qualifying in each category.

The right-hander has also tossed a career-high 27 2-3 scoreless innings - the longest such streak by a Dodgers pitcher since Clayton Kershaw had a 41-inning run last year - while going 2-0 over his last four starts.

"It's been pretty good," Greinke said of his first half of the season. "Mainly just trying to stay one pitch at a time."

Another gem in the finale of this four-game set for Los Angeles (48-38) could make Greinke the NL starter in Tuesday's Midsummer Classic.

"I don't really think about it," he said.

Greinke looked deserving of the honor Saturday, scattering four hits in seven innings while outpitching Matt Harvey in a 4-3 win over the New York Mets.

"He's doing what he always does," manager Don Mattingly said. "He knows exactly where he wants to go with every guy. Zack has got the weapons and he does his homework."

Greinke has won three straight starts against the Phillies (29-58), allowing two runs with 14 strikeouts in 14 1-3 innings over his last two.

Kershaw - whose All-Star status is subject to a final vote - tossed an eight-hitter with 13 strikeouts in Tuesday's 5-0 victory.

Jimmy Rollins, the 2007 NL MVP and three-time All-Star with the Phillies, is 4 for 12 with five RBIs and four runs in his first series against his former team after connecting for a three-run homer and a double Tuesday.

Philadelphia owns the worst record in baseball and has lost 11 of 14 games thanks in large part to a 7.07 ERA from its rotation. The starters have failed to complete at least six innings nine times in that span.

The Phillies' bullpen is one of those most used in the majors at 281 2-3 innings, 31 2-3 more than at this point last year.

"We just can't afford to use the bullpen," manager Pete Mackanin told MLB's official website. "We've got to get more length."

Expecting that from Severino Gonzalez (3-2, 8.28) is a stretch since he's yet to complete six innings in any of his six starts.

Still, rebuilding Philadelphia felt it was more valuable to have the rookie right-hander back in the rotation after Kevin Correia was designated for assignment Tuesday.

Gonzalez's last appearance came as the 26th player due to a doubleheader against Washington on June 28. He gave up four runs - three on two homers - and struck out seven in 5 1-3 innings of an 8-5 win as the teams split the twinbill.

Gonzalez allowed five runs and two homers while hitting two batters in seven innings of his most recent start for Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Friday.

Freddy Galvis, Rollins' replacement at shortstop for the Phillies, is 17 for 39 (.436) during a career-high 10-game hitting streak.

Domonic Brown has three hits in the last two games, lifting his season average 20 points to .205. His lone hit in nine at-bats versus Greinke is a solo homer.

Thursday's Tip Sheet

July 9, 2015

Cardinals at Pirates – 7:05 PM EST

The premiere matchup of the weekend takes place at PNC Park as the top two teams in the National League hook up for four games. The Cardinals escaped Chicago with a four-game split following Jhonny Peralta’s two-run homer in the ninth inning of Wednesday’s 6-5 victory. St. Louis blew a 4-0 lead, but managed to win its seventh road game in the past 10 tries.

The Pirates pulled off a three-game home sweep of the Padres, rallying past San Diego for the third straight night in Wednesday’s 5-2 victory as -130 favorites. Pittsburgh has won eight of its previous nine games, sending out southpaw Jeff Locke (5-4, 4.15 ERA) to the mound for tonight’s opener. The Bucs own a 4-1 record in Locke’s last five outings, including a 1-0 victory over Cleveland in his past start, tossing eight scoreless innings. Pittsburgh has won each of Locke’s three career home starts against St. Louis, including a 4-3 triumph back in May.

Carlos Martinez (9-3, 2.70 ERA) has been fantastic since entering the Cardinals’ rotation full-time with St. Louis are 8-1 in his past nine starts. The Redbirds own a 7-0-1 mark to the ‘under’ in Martinez’s last eight outings, with opponents scoring two runs or less seven times in this stretch. Martinez allowed seven earned runs in 5.1 innings the last time he faced the Pirates at PNC Park in May, as the Cardinals lost, 7-5.

Tigers at Twins – 8:05 PM EST

Not many people would have predicted that Minnesota would own a better record than Detroit at this point of the season. The Twins own a 2 ½-game advantage over the Tigers heading into their four-game set at Target Field after Minnesota pulled off a three-game home sweep of Baltimore. Detroit continues its road trip after taking two of three at Seattle, while continuing their amazing ‘over’ streak, cashing in 19 straight games following Wednesday’s 5-4 victory.

David Price (8-2, 2.54 ERA) has turned into nearly an automatic victory every time he pitches for Detroit, as the Tigers have compiled an incredible 14-3 record when the southpaw starts. Price dominated a solid Toronto lineup in his previous outing, yielding eight hits and one earned run in seven innings of an 8-3 home victory. The Tigers have beaten the Twins seven of nine times this season, while Price is 2-0 against Minnesota.

Mike Pelfrey (5-5, 3.94 ERA) is winless in his last five starts for Minnesota, even though the Twins beat the Royals in his past outing as a +145 road underdog. Pelfrey’s numbers away from Target Field are horrible (6.02 ERA), but he has pitched much better at home, with the Twins owning a 6-1 record when the right-hander takes the mound at Target Field. Pelfrey has split a pair of starts against Detroit this season, including a 3-2 home underdog victory on April 28.

Phillies at Dodgers – 10:05 PM EST

Los Angeles got things back on track following Tuesday’s 7-2 loss to Philadelphia, as Clayton Kershaw tossed a complete-game shutout in last night’s 5-0 rout of the Phillies. The Dodgers easily cashed as hefty -335 favorites, while L.A. improved to 6-0 in its past six games off a loss. Los Angeles is seeking consecutive home wins for the first time since early June when the Dodgers swept the Diamondbacks.

After Kershaw kept the Phillies scoreless, the Dodgers turn to their second ace in the series finale. Zack Greinke (7-2, 1.48 ERA) hasn’t allowed a run in his last four outings, while coming off a 4-3 win over the Mets in his past start as a -170 favorite. New York rallied late from a 4-0 deficit to score three runs off the Los Angeles bullpen, while snapping a five-game ‘under’ streak when Greinke takes the mound. The Dodgers are 4-1 in Greinke’s five starts as a favorite of at least -200 this season, while being listed as a favorite higher than -300 for the first time in his career.

Severino Gonzalez (3-2, 8.28 ERA) has a tall task for Philadelphia, going for his second straight win. The right-hander beat the Nationals as a +145 home underdog in his previous outing on June 28, in spite of allowing four earned runs in 5.1 innings. In spite of Philadelphia’s woes on the highway, the Phillies are 2-2 in Gonzalez’s two away starts, beating the Rockies and Marlins as a road underdog.

Angels at Mariners – 10:10 PM EST

The AL West race has gotten interesting of late as the Angels are riding a five-game winning streak following a two-game sweep of Colorado. Los Angeles has trimmed the division deficit to 1 ½ games behind Houston, while winning nine of its past 10 contests. The Mariners continue their homestand after losing two of three to the Tigers. Seattle has dropped six of nine meetings with Los Angeles, but in two of their wins, the M’s have relied on the arm of their ace.

Felix Hernandez (10-5, 3.02 ERA) is winless in his past three starts, which includes a no-decision in a 3-2 extra-innings loss to the Angels on June 28. Hernandez gave up only one hit in six innings, as the Mariners’ offense hasn’t helped out the former Cy Young winner, scoring two runs or less in each of his past seven outings. Seattle is 6-3 in Hernandez’s nine starts at Safeco Field, but has allowed at least four earned runs in three of his past five home outings.

The Angels look to stay hot behind Garrett Richards (9-5, 3.35 ERA), who has won four of his past five starts. Richards has pitched into the eighth inning in each of his last two outings, including allowing two earned runs in 7.2 innings of a 4-2 home victory over the Mariners on June 27 as a -140 favorite. The Angels own a 3-1 record in Richards’ four starts as a road underdog, while giving up one hit in seven innings of a 2-0 victory at Safeco Field last April.

MLB roundup: Gomez homers twice as Brewers rally

MILWAUKEE -- Carlos Gomez hit two home runs -- including a three-run, go-ahead shot in the eighth inning -- as the Milwaukee Brewers rallied for a 6-5 victory over the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday.

The Brewers trailed 4-0 after the Braves hit two home runs in the third inning -- a three-run shot by Cameron Maybin and a solo blast by Kelly Johnson.

Khris Davis hit a two-run homer for the Brewers in the fourth inning, and Gomez hit a solo homer in the sixth inning and the winner in the eighth. It was the third multi-home run game of Gomez's career and his first in nearly two seasons.

Mets 4, Giants 1

SAN FRANCISCO -- All-Star Jacob deGrom pitched eight shutout innings and combined with two relievers on a five-hitter as New York beat San Francisco.

Eric Campbell singled and scored off right-hander Jake Peavy in the seventh inning, then belted a two-run, game-clinching home run off reliever Jean Machi in the ninth, enabling the Mets to win two out of three in a series that featured two shutouts.

DeGrom (9-6) became just the NL's seventh nine-game winner, and he lowered his ERA to 2.14, the fifth-best mark in the league.

Twins 5, Orioles 3

MINNEAPOLIS -- Brian Dozier's sixth-inning home run kick-started the Twins' offense as Minnesota earned its first sweep of Baltimore since 2007.

One of five players competing in the American League's Final Vote campaign for the last spot in next week's All-Star Game, Dozier had two hits and stole two bases. His two-run blast in the sixth off Bud Norris gave Minnesota a 2-1 lead. It was his 18th homer of the season, the most among big-league second basemen.

Joe Mauer followed with a solo home run into the seats in left field, the first time this season Minnesota hit back-to-back home runs.

Tigers 5, Mariners 4

SEATTLE -- Rookie Jefry Marte went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs and Nick Castellanos delivered the go-ahead sacrifice fly in the seventh inning as Detroit beat Seattle.

Castellanos also hit an RBI single in the first inning, and Marte homered in the fourth inning to put Detroit up 4-2.

Dustin Ackley drove in two runs for Seattle, and Mark Trumbo went 3-for-5 and scored twice.

Indians 4, Astros 2

CLEVELAND -- David Murphy's two-run double in the eighth inning broke at 2-2 tie and lifted Cleveland past Houston.

With one out in the bottom of the eighth, Francisco Lindor doubled off Joe Thatcher (1-3). Michael Brantley drew a walk. Murphy then ripped a line drive over the head of right fielder Preston Tucker. The ball bounced off the wall for a double, driving in both runners and giving Cleveland a 4-2 lead.

Trevor Bauer (8-5) gave up two runs on six hits, with nine strikeouts and no walks to get the win. Cody Allen pitched the ninth inning to pick up his 17th save.

Red Sox 6, Marlins 3

BOSTON -- Rick Porcello snapped a career-worst seven-game losing streak with a little help from his offense, and Boston stretched its winning streak to a season-high four games with a win over Miami.

Porcello (5-9) lasted six innings, allowing two runs on eight hits and a walk while striking out four as Boston swept the two-game series.

David Ortiz had two hits, including a two-run homer in the Red Sox's four-run third inning. Koji Uehara picked up his 21st save by throwing a scoreless ninth inning.

Pirates 5, Padres 2

PITTSBURGH -- Gregory Polanco delivered his second winning hit in as many games, driving home Travis Ishikawa from first base with a two-out single off the right field wall in the eighth inning to give Pittsburgh a victory over San Diego.

Pittsburgh won its fifth straight, and San Diego lost its fifth in a row. It was also Pittsburgh's 22nd come-from-behind win of the season.

Padres starter Andrew Cashner was in control through six innings, allowing just one hit as San Diego clung to a 2-1 lead. However, Pittsburgh broke through in the seventh to tie the score after Neil Walker led off with a double, advanced to third on Jung Ho Kang's fly ball and scored on Francisco Cervelli's groundout.

Yankees 5, A's 4

NEW YORK -- Mark Teixeira hit solo home runs in consecutive at-bats, and New York held off Oakland.

Teixeira recorded his 39th career game with at least two home runs and second this season but did not get a chance at a third home run when he was intentionally walked with two outs in the seventh.

Both home runs came off reliever Evan Scribner (2-2), who came on after Oakland starter Scott Kazmir exited with left triceps tightness in the third inning.

Cardinals 6, Cubs 5

CHICAGO -- Jhonny Peralta's two-run homer in the ninth helped lift St. Louis to a come-from-behind victory over Chicago.

The victory salvaged a 2-2 series split for the Cardinals while the Cubs saw a two-game winning streak snapped.

Peralta lined a 1-2 pitch off reliever Pedro Strop into the left-field basket for his 12th homer of the year and scored pinch runner Pete Kozma.

White Sox 7, Blue Jays 6 (11 innings)

-- CHICAGO – Adam Eaton drilled a walk-off solo homer on the second pitch in the 11th inning to give Chicago a victory against Toronto at U.S. Cellular Field.

Eaton's sixth homer of the season came off right-handed closer Roberto Osuna, who had picked up his fourth save the night before after cementing the closer's role for Toronto.

Chicago finally had a big night offensively at home. The White Sox finished with 16 hits and scored more than four runs in front of their home fans for the first time since May 9, a string of 24 straight games.

Diamondbacks 7, Rangers 4

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Arizona took advantage of scoring opportunities with two outs to beat Texas and complete a two-game sweep of the interleague series.

The Diamondbacks scored all seven of their runs with two outs, with homers from A.J. Pollock and Welington Castillo the big blows.

Pollock's three-run homer capped a five-run second inning against Texas starter Matt Harrison, who was making his first big-league start since last May because of a back issue that led to spinal fusion surgery.

Royals 9, Rays 7

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Lorenzo Cain and Jarrod Dyson homered and Alcides Escobar stroked four hits as Kansas City held on to beat skidding Tampa Bay.

The victory, however, may have been costly for the Royals as All-Star left fielder Alex Gordon was carted from the field in the fourth inning with a left groin injury. He was taken for a MRI to determine the severity of the injury.

Rays right-hander Chris Archer (9-6), who was a candidate to start the All-Star game, had his worst outing of his career, giving up a career-high nine runs and 12 hits in six innings. Archer entered the game 6-0 with a 0.77 ERA in seven road starts this season. He had allowed three or fewer earned runs in a club-record 20 straight road starts.

Dodgers 5, Phillies 0

LOS ANGELES -- Clayton Kershaw pitched a complete-game shutout, leading Los Angeles to a shutout victory over Philadelphia at Dodger Stadium.

Catcher A.J. Ellis and shortstop Jimmy Rollins homered as the National League West-leading Dodgers bounced back from a 7-2 thrashing by the Phillies on Tuesday. Ellis went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, while Rollins was 2-for-4 with three RBIs.

Kershaw (6-6), who hasn’t allowed a run by the Phillies in 31 innings, struck out 13 and scattered eight hits. It was Kershaw’s first win since he blanked the St. Louis Cardinals for eight innings in an 8-0 romp by Los Angeles on June 6.

Angels 3, Rockies 2

DENVER -- A single by Johnny Giavotella with two outs and the bases loaded in the ninth gave Los Angeles a win over Colorado and a sweep of their two-game series.

Giavotella, who has thrived in late-inning situations, singled off closer John Axford (1-2). The game-winning rally began when David Freese singled with one out.

Joe Smith (3-2) pitched the eighth and former Rockies closer Huston Street earned his 24th save in 26 opportunities this season.

Reds at Nationals, ppd. (rain)

WASHINGTON -- The series finale between Cincinnati and Washington was rained out. A makeup date was not immediately announced.

Preview: Liberty (6-4) at Mystics (6-4)

Date: July 09, 2015 11:30 AM EDT

(AP) - Epiphanny Prince will finally get to play for her hometown team, the New York Liberty.

Prince is back after missing the first 10 games of the regular season while she was competing for Russia in the EuroBasket tournament. The Liberty held their own without the New York native whom they acquired in a blockbuster offseason from Chicago for Cappie Pondexter. New York (6-4) is tied with Washington for second place in the Eastern Conference.

'I'm happy to be back here and hope that I can provide them some help,' Prince said at practice Monday. 'I'm still trying to learn the plays and know we have a busy month ahead.'

Prince tried to play in the Liberty's most recent game, at Chicago on June 30, but wasn't feeling well after the long trip from Hungary.

Fortunately for Prince and the Liberty, due to a scheduling quirk, the team will have had nine days between the Chicago game and Thursday's game against the Mystics. The break has come at a good time to allow Prince to become accustomed to her new team.

'We got a little practice time with her to get her up to speed,' coach Bill Laimbeer said. 'I think we need the other scorer, no question about that. Getting Piph, she can make things happen on the basketball court.'

Prince did play with the team in the preseason for five days before heading to the tournament. The two-time All-Star will have to wait until next week before she gets a chance to play at Madison Square Garden as the Liberty continue a stretch with seven of nine on the road.

Tina Charles led New York to its third win in four games June 30, posting 26 points and 11 rebounds in an 89-81 victory at Chicago. She finished with 18 points in a 67-62 loss in the nation's capital on June 6, but struggled with six on 3-of-17 shooting in a 74-59 home loss to Washington on June 14.

The Mystics seek their third straight home win, though they've dropped two of three overall following last Thursday's 73-50 road loss to Indiana. Tierra Ruffin-Pratt and Stefanie Dolson led the way with 12 points apiece in the team's most lopsided loss of the season.

Washington, which had averaged 81.6 points in its previous five games, put up just 16 in the second half and shot 18.6 percent over the final three quarters.

Emma Meesseman finished with nine points after scoring 18.6 per game over her previous five. The All-Star candidate led the way with 16 points and nine rebounds in the first matchup with New York, but only scored two on 1-of-6 shooting June 14.

"I know what I have to do without being too scared to do it," Meesseman told the team's official website. "I know that (coach Mike Thibault) has confidence in me so it boosts my confidence when doing stuff on the court. And I think I'm just getting stronger physically as I grow older, that's a big thing."

CFL Betting Notes - Week 3

July 6, 2015

As the CFL heads into Week 3, upsets continue to be the biggest story of the new season. In last week’s action Hamilton rolled over Winnipeg 52-26 on Thursday as a two-point road underdog to get things started. On Friday night, Montreal stunned Calgary 29-11 as a heavy 9 ½-point underdog at home.

The upstart Ottawa RedBlacks have already equaled last season’s straight-up win total of just two games with a 27-16 victory against British Columbia as three-point home underdogs and this past Sunday, Toronto completed the sweep with a stunning 42-40 upset of Saskatchewan as a three-point underdog on the road.

Opening Odds provided by 5Dimes.eu

Thursday, July 9

Ottawa RedBlacks (2-0 SU, 2-0 ATS) vs. Edmonton Eskimos (0-1 SU, 0-1 ATS)
Point-spread: Edmonton -6
Total: 46 ½

Game Overview

The RedBlacks have won their first two games behind a defense that has allowed a combined 32 points. This is a vast improvement from a unit that was ranked seventh in the league last season in points allowed. Veteran quarterback Henry Burris has also played well with a combined 559 yards passing in the two games.

Edmonton is coming off a Week 2 bye after losing its season opener to Toronto by the score of 26-11 as a 7 ½-point road favorite. The Eskimos only managed 178 yards through the air and 81 yards on the ground in that loss. Quarterback Mike Reilly injured his knee in Week 1 and he will be out until late October. Matt Nichols is expected to get the start in his place.

Betting Trends

The RedBlacks are 3-7 against the spread in their last 10 road games, while the Eskimos are a perfect 5-0 ATS in their last five games at home. Edmonton won last year’s series 2-0 SU and both games stayed UNDER the total.
