CHICAGO (AP) Phillies ace Cole Hamels enhanced his trade value even more, becoming the first pitcher to throw a no-hitter against the Chicago Cubs in 50 years while leading Philadelphia to a 5-0 win Saturday.

There was drama down to the final out, when rookie center fielder Odubel Herrera stumbled on the warning track, but managed to lean forward and catch Kris Bryant's flyball to end the game.

Hamels struck out 13 in the first no-hitter versus the Cubs since Sandy Koufax pitched a perfect game in 1965.

Hamels (6-7) threw his first career no-hitter in what could be his final start for the Phillies. He was the MVP of the 2008 World Series has been mentioned prominently in trade talks as the July 31 deadline approaches.

The 31-year-old lefty was part of the Phillies' last no-hitter, too. He teamed with three relievers on a combined no-no last Sept. 1 at Atlanta.

RANGERS 7, ANGELS 6

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Delino DeShields capped a three-run rally in the eighth inning with an infield hit that drove in the go-ahead run, Rougned Odor homered, and Texas beat Los Angeles.

Joe Smith (4-3) came on to protect a 6-4 lead for Angels starter Hector Santiago, but didn't make it out of the eighth. Elvis Andrus raced home from third as Shin-Soo Choo grounded to first baseman Albert Pujols for a force at second, Robinson Chirinos singled home another run, and Josh Hamilton scored on DeShields' high chopper to third.

Spencer Patton (1-0) earned his second big league victory with a hitless seventh. Struggling Tanner Scheppers pitched a hitless eighth and Shawn Tolleson got his 17th save.

The Angels' loss was their third in a row after seven straight wins, and kept them in a virtual tie with Houston for the AL West lead.

CARDINALS 1, BRAVES 0

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Pinch-hitter Stephen Piscotty got his first career RBI with a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning and Carlos Martinez outdueled former teammate Shelby Miller as St. Louis beat Atlanta.

The Cardinals won their fifth in a row despite getting just two hits. They lead the majors with a 63-34 record.

Martinez (11-4) made his first post-All-Star break start and allowed six hits in eight innings with six strikeouts and one walk, which was intentional. He worked the last four innings and took the loss in an 18-inning setback to the Mets on Sunday.

Randy Choate got the last two outs for his first save. Cardinals closer Trevor Rosenthal has gotten two games off after working three in a row.

Miller (5-7) allowed a run on two hits in 7-plus innings. The right-hander is 0-6 in his last 12 games, the longest winless slump by a Braves starter since Kenshin Kawakami went 14 games between victories in 2010.

YANKEES 8, TWINS 5

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Alex Rodriguez hit three home runs in a game for the fifth time in his career and keyed a ninth-inning rally against All-Star closer Glen Perkins, sending New York over Minnesota.

The Yankees trailed 5-0 early. Rodriguez hit Perkins' first pitch for a tying homer, and John Ryan Murphy later connected for a three-run shot.

Rodriguez hit 452-foot solo homer in the fourth and a 422-foot drive that made it 5-3 in the seventh. His 424-foot homer in the ninth cleared the center field wall.

A-Rod clapped as he trotted around first base after each homer while fans at sold-out Target Field booed. The last time Rodriguez hit three home runs in a game was Aug. 14, 2010, at Kansas City.

Rodriguez has 23 homers this season and 677 in his career. He is now 6 for 10 lifetime against Perkins with two home runs.

METS 15, DODGERS 2

NEW YORK (AP) - Michael Conforto went 4 for 4 for his first big league hits and Kelly Johnson homered into the upper deck in his Mets' debut, powering New York past Los Angeles.

Lucas Duda homered twice for the Mets in their highest-scoring game since April 2013, and their biggest run total ever against the Dodgers.

Slumping at the plate most of the season, the Mets erupted for 21 hits, their most since 2010.

Conforto, playing his second game in the majors, doubled twice and scored four runs. Kirk Nieuwenhuis got four hits and drove in four runs and Daniel Murphy homered.

Johnson and Juan Uribe both got hits a day after the Mets acquired them in a trade with Atlanta.

Matt Harvey (9-7) doubled, singled and pitched seven innings as the Mets ended a three-game losing streak.

Los Angeles starter Zach Lee (0-1) was tagged in his major league debut.

On Sunday, Zack Greinke starts for the Dodgers with a shutout streak of 43 2/3 innings.

ROYALS 2, ASTROS 1, 10 INNINGS

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Alcides Escobar singled home Paulo Orlando with two outs in the 10th inning to lift Kansas City to a victory over Houston.

Orlando singled off Will Harris (4-3) with one out and stole second before Escobar's game-winning looper to shallow right gave the Royals the win and snapped the Astros' five-game winning streak.

Kelvin Herrera (2-2) pitched a scoreless 10th to pick up the victory.

Carlos Correa's sacrifice fly gave the Astros a 1-0 lead in the sixth, and the Royals tied it on Salvador's sacrifice fly in the seventh.

GIANTS 2, ATHLETICS 1

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Madison Bumgarner hit a home run and pitched seven innings for his third consecutive win, and San Francisco beat Oakland.

Matt Duffy added a tiebreaking single in the sixth while helping the defending World Series champs to their 10th victory in 11 games.

Bumgarner - a Silver Slugger award winner in 2014 - homered on a 3-2 pitch from A's starter Chris Bassitt (0-3) in the third. It was Bumgarner's third home run this season and ninth of his career.

Bumgarner (11-5) also struck out seven while working past the sixth inning - something he failed to do in each of his previous three starts.

Sergio Romo pitched the eighth and Santiago Casilla worked the ninth for his 25th save.

Ben Zobrist had three hits and scored the A's only run in the fourth inning.

BLUE JAYS 8, MARINERS 6

SEATTLE (AP) - Chris Colabello's two-run, bases-loaded single in the ninth inning gave the Blue Jays a victory over Seattle.

Josh Donaldson opened the ninth with a walk off Carson Smith (1-3). Jose Bautista then doubled into the right-field corner. It extended Bautista's streak of reaching base against the Mariners to 36 games, including 33 with a hit.

Edwin Encarnacion was intentionally walked, drawing the infield in with no outs. Colabello then bounced his go-ahead single up the middle.

Aaron Sanchez (6-4), just off the disabled list, worked the eighth to earn the victory.

Roberto Osuna finished the ninth for his fifth save in six opportunities.

NATIONALS 9, PIRATES 3

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Rookie center fielder Michael Taylor had a home run and three RBIs and Gio Gonzalez won his fourth straight decision to lead Washington to a victory over Pittsburgh.

Taylor capped the scoring with a two-run home run, his seventh, in the eighth inning off rookie Arquimedes Caminero.

Gonzalez (8-4) lasted just five-plus inning and gave up three runs, one earned, and five hits with no walks and five strikeouts. Yet the left-hander stayed unbeaten in his last five starts and improved to 4-0 lifetime against the Pirates.

The Nationals' Yunel Escobar had three hits after sitting out the previous two games with a sore left wrist, while Ian Desmond homered for a third straight game for the NL East leaders.

A.J. Burnett (8-4) had another rocky outing.

PADRES 3, MARLINS 1

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Ian Kennedy, being mentioned in various trade scenarios, pitched six strong innings and San Diego defeated Miami.

Kennedy (6-9) allowed a run and five hits. He matched a season high with seven strikeouts and walked one.

Kennedy has attracted interest from contending teams heading toward Friday's trading deadline.

David Phelps (4-7) gave up two runs over six innings.

Derek Dietrich opened the seventh with a home run, slicing the Marlins' deficit to 2-1. J.T. Realmuto followed with a triple and that chased Kennedy.

Reliever Brandon Maurer came in and stranded the tying run when Adeiny Hechavarria and Cole Gillespie grounded out to third and pinch-hitter Casey McGehee flied out.

Craig Kimbrel pitched the ninth for his 28th save in 29 chances.

REDS 5, ROCKIES 2

DENVER (AP) - Johnny Cueto shrugging off trade rumors and pitched eight scoreless innings, Todd Frazier connected for his 100th career home run, and the Cincinnati Reds beat the Colorado Rockies 5-2 Saturday night.

Billy Hamilton had three hits and scored twice for the Reds.

Cueto (7-6,) whose name has come up repeatedly in potential trade-deadline deals, put on a dominating display in hitter-friendly Coors Field, limiting the power-hitting Rockies' lineup to four singles before being lifted for a pinch-hitter in the ninth. He struck out five and walked one in a performance sure to heighten attention ahead of the July 31 trade deadline.

Chris Rusin (3-4) allowed five runs and 10 hits in five innings.

DIAMONDBACKS 2, BREWERS 0

PHOENIX (AP) - Rubby De La Rosa pitched eight effective innings and Brad Ziegler held on for his 14th straight save, lifting Arizona to a victory over Milwaukee.

De La Rosa (8-5) allowed four hits and struck out six, winning for the sixth time in 11 starts at Chase Field. Ziegler gave up two two-out singles and walked a batter in the ninth before striking out Gerardo Parra for his 16th save in 17 chances.

It was Arizona's first shutout since beating the San Francisco Giants 4-0 on June 14, and sixth of the season.

Paul Goldschmidt and Jake Lamb both had run-scoring hits in the first inning against Taylor Jungmann (5-2) for the Diamondbacks, who had four hits - two after the opening frame.

ORIOLES 5, RAYS 1

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Chris Davis hit his fifth career grand slam and Miguel Gonzalez took a shutout into the eighth inning as Baltimore snapped a four-game losing streak with a victory over Tampa Bay.

Gonzalez (9-6) allowed one run and five hits over 7 2-3 innings to win for the third time in his last four starts. The right-hander didn't issue a walk and struck out five.

Davis hit his 22nd homer of the season after J.J. Hardy, Jonathan Schoop and David Lough singled to load the bases against Erasmo Ramirez (8-4) in the third inning.

The Orioles added a run in the eighth when Lough tripled down the right field line and bounced up from his slide to jog home and score on second baseman Logan Forsythe's throwing error.

TIGERS 5, RED SOX 1

BOSTON (AP) - Nick Castellanos drove in three runs with a solo homer and double, Alfredo Simon pitched six solid innings and Detroit bounced back after consecutive extra-inning losses with a victory over Boston.

Former Red Sox left fielder Yoenis Cespedes hit a solo homer and threw out a runner at the plate.

It was just the third win in eight games for the Tigers, who lost the opener of the three-game series 2-1 in 11 innings on Friday. They closed a seven-game homestand with a 3-2 setback against Seattle in 12 on Thursday.

Mookie Betts drove in the run for Boston, which lost for the ninth time in 10 games.

Simon (9-6) gave up one run and five hits before limping off after throwing the second pitch in the seventh. He came in with an ERA of 6.08 in nine road starts.

WHITE SOX 10, INDIANS 3

CLEVELAND (AP) - Chris Sale allowed two runs in seven innings and Chicago used a five-run first to power past Cleveland.

Sale (9-5) cruised after being handed the big lead before taking the mound. The left-hander struck out seven to regain the American League lead with 170. Sale allowed seven hits and didn't walk a batter.

Jose Abreu drove in three runs, Melky Cabrera was 3 for 5 with two RBIs and Carlos Sanchez hit his first major league homer.

The White Sox, who came to Cleveland with six losses in seven games, have outscored the Indians 24-4 in winning the first three games of a series that ends Sunday.

Carlos Carrasco (8-6) allowed six runs in four innings. The right-hander hasn't won since coming within one out of pitching a no-hitter against Tampa Bay on July 1.

Hall of Fame Class of '15 shows its class

Jul 25, 2015

COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. -- With 24 hours left to go before he is officially inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame, left-handed pitcher Randy Johnson still was searching for the words to describe how it will feel to be enshrined with the greatest players in the sport's history.

"Goosebumps," Johnson said. "To be amongst that, you can't put that into words. At least not right now."

Johnson and the rest the Class of 2015 -- second baseman Craig Biggio, right-handed pitcher Pedro Martinez and right-handed pitcher John Smoltz -- will do their best to sum up the experience Sunday.

A crowd of 50,000 is expected to pile into a usually sleepy upstate town whose year-round population is only 1,834.

If Saturday's press conference is any indication, Johnson will offer up a glimpse of himself far different than the one most fans saw during his career, when the 6-foot-10 left-hander was known for his ornery demeanor on the field and his distance off it.

"I'm not wound nearly as tight as I once was," Johnson said. "I pitched with a lot of emotion and anger at times and I don't think I could have done it any other way.

"But I'm not the same person anymore. And now this is my last stop.

I'm overwhelmed. So tomorrow should be a great (day)."

Smoltz, Biggio and Martinez, on the other hand, appeared ready Saturday to carry themselves Sunday with the same laid-back candidness they displayed throughout their careers.

Smoltz, who joins Atlanta Braves rotation mates Tom Glavine and Greg Maddux as a first-ballot inductee, said he would step to the stage Sunday feeling as if he was " ... somewhere between Forrest Gump and 'Dumb and Dumber.'

"So you don't know what's coming out. I can't wait."

Smoltz said he won't pull a Maddux, who slyly inserted a joke about passing gas into an acceptance speech last year that went almost as quick -- 10 minutes and 10 seconds -- as one of his starts.

Smoltz's speech will push the 18 minutes recommended by the Hall, but it will contain a serious message about the increasingly casual nature with which Tommy John surgery (which Smoltz underwent in 2000) is performed and viewed.

"I feel compelled, as the only Tommy John recipient in the Hall of Fame, to speak to it and to hopefully correct some myths," Smoltz said. "I want to see these pitchers of the future be able to do what myself and all these guys have been able to do."

Biggio, who turns 50 in December, looked as youthful and as enthusiastic as ever. As the only player in this year's class who played for only one franchise, he held two press conferences -- one for national media and one for Houston reporters.

Upon seeing one familiar face from Houston ask a question, Biggio grinned.

"Hey, how you doing?" Biggio said. "You're late."

Biggio hasn't had to glance at his watch much since arriving in Cooperstown.

He said he has been wide-eyed at how welcome he's been made to feel by the enshrined Hall of Famers he's chatted with at the Otesaga Resort Hotel.

"I don't really want to stay in my room; I have no problem just sitting in the lobby and just hanging out," Biggio said. "I sat next to the fireplace the other night with Gaylord Perry for an hour just talking baseball, talking peanuts, talking life, talking the game. It's pretty cool."

Nobody talks life or the game quite like Martinez, the Dominican-born right-hander who was once dubbed "the best quote in any language" by Jeff Horrigan, the Boston Herald's Red Sox beat writer.

And Martinez was in fine form Saturday, when he was asked about the comments made by Colin Cowherd, who was fired from ESPN Radio earlier this week for declaring that Dominican players come from a country that has " ... not been known, in my lifetime, as having, you know, world-class academic abilities."

Said Martinez: "It's only going to be an insult to anyone that falls to that level. I'm not at that level. I'm dealing here with educated people, I'm dealing here with the right people, people that understand human rights, that understand who we are. These are the people I'm paying attention to."

Martinez was similarly unflinching when it came to discussing the hand-wringing that has gone on about the unlikely Hall of Fame candidacies of the steroid-tainted likes of Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens and Alex Rodriguez.

"There's no crying in baseball, right?" Martinez said. "I'm going to repeat that: There's no crying in baseball. I just hope that whoever gets a chance to make it here, makes it here. I'm not condoning people cheating the game or doing the wrong things, because I never did.

"But hey, enough with the whining. Let's just play ball."

Game of the day: Tiger-Cats at Roughriders
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hamilton Tiger-Cats at Saskatchwan Roughriders (-1, 56)

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats look to put a disappointing start to the season behind them when they hit the road to face the Saskatchewan Roughriders on Sunday. The Tiger-Cats were pegged by many as East Division favourites in the preseason but have lost two of their first three games, including a 17-13 setback to the Montreal Alouettes in Week 4.

Penalties and turnovers have hampered Hamilton's progress and it hopes to turn things around by securing its first victory in Regina since a 35-34 triumph on July 28, 2012. The Roughriders look to avoid their first 0-5 start in 20 years after dropping a 27-24 decision to the BC Lions. Kevin Glenn has been a more than capable replacement for the injured Darian Durant, and leads the league with 1,228 passing yards, but Saskatchewan's defence has given up a least 27 points in every game. The Roughriders have dropped their first three home games after finishing 6-3 last season, but have had some recent success against Hamilton, winning the last two meetings in Regina by an average margin of 29 points.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, TSN

LINE HISTORY: The spread opened as a pick'em before moving to SSK -1. The total has jumped a point from 55 to 56.

INJURY REPORT: Tiger-Cats - DB Neil King (Ques-Undisclosed), DB Courtney Stephen (Ques-Undisclosed) Roughriders - LB Shea Emry (Ques-Neck)

ABOUT THE TIGER-CATS (1-2 SU, 1-2 ATS, 1-2 O/U): Zach Collaros had his worst outing of the year after finishing 27-of-42 for 296 yards and three interceptions as Hamilton turned the ball over five times versus the Alouettes. The Tiger-Cats will get a big boost with the news that running back C.J. Gable has recovered from a finger injury and is back on the practice field after missing the first three games of the season. Linebacker Rico Murray, who led the team with five interceptions last year, has recovered from a hamstring injury and could be in line for his first start Sunday.

ABOUT THE ROUGHRIDERS (0-4 SU, 0-4 ATS, 3-0 O/U): Weston Dressler continued his hot start as he hauled in six passes for 125 yards against the Lions and is second in the CFL with 329 receiving yards. Ryan Smith, who has 11 catches for 251 yards and two touchdowns, is set to return to the lineup after missing the last two games with an upper-body injury while wide receiver Taj Smith is done for the rest of the season. "He wasn't at his fullest so we shut Taj down," Saskatchewan coach Corey Chamblin told reporters. "There's some other guys that moved ahead of him."

TRENDS:

*Tiger-Cats are 2-13-1 ATS in their last 16 meetings in Saskatchewan.
*Roughriders are 3-12-1 ATS in their last 16 games overall.
*Under is 10-4 in Tiger-Cats last 14 games overall.
*Over is 6-2 in Roughriders last 8 games following a S.U. loss.

CONSENSUS: 64.4 percent of the community is behind SSK, with 53.5 percent on the under.

Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

Current odds to win the World Series this season.......

9-2-- Kansas City Royals

6-1-- St Louis Cardinals, Los Angeles Dodgers, Washington Nationals

8-1-- Pittsburgh Pirates

12-1-- Bronx Bombers

14-1-- Los Angeles Angels

16-1-- Chicago Cubs

**********

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday.....

13) In his last two starts before Saturday, Cole Hamels allowed 20 hits, 14 runs in 6.1 IP; he threw a no-hitter at Wrigley Field Saturday, the first time the Cubs have been no-hit in 7,920 games dating back to 1965, when Sandy Koufax threw a perfect game against Chicago.

12) Cincinnati now has longest streak since they were last shut out, 7,026 games, which goes back to 1971.

11) Hamels threw 129 pitches, induced 27 misses on 59 swings-- ya think the teams trying to trade for Hamels are nervous about him throwing 129 pitches?

10) Milwaukee's leadoff hitter got on base leading off the game last night, then was thrown out stealing second- that makes me nuts, giving the pitcher an out before he actually gets a hitter out. The #2-3-4 hitters were coming up; make the pitcher work.

9) 49 years ago this week, July 25, 1956, Roberto Clemente hit a walk-off inside-the-park grand slam that gave the Pirates a 9-8 win at Forbes Field. Imagine that!!! In his great career, Clemnete hit ten inside-the-park homers.

8) Alex Rodriguez hit three homers Saturday (THREE HOMERS!!!) as Bronx rallied to win 8-5 in Minnesota; A-Rod is hitting .277 with 23 HRs, 58 RBI and a .375 OB% as his team is in first place in the AL East. A-Rod will be 40 this coming week.

7) For whatever reason, the media refuses to give A-Rod his due; if this had been Derek Jeter instead of A-Rod, the following things might well have already happened:
-- Immediate induction in Cooperstown, waiving the 5-year post-retirement wait
-- He would've gotten a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame
-- He would've been named to the All-Star team (imagine no A-Rod this year?)
-- He would've been nominated for sainthood by the Vatican.

6) Mets' pitcher Matt Harvey has 2+ RBI in his last three starts, the first MLB pitcher to do that since Andy Messersmith in 1976.

5) Russell Wilson turned down $21M a year from the Seahawks? This is a guy who left NC State before his senior year, after starting for three years-- he is stubborn and it will not surprise me if he winds up leaving Seattle.

4) Arizona slugger Paul Goldschmidt is very good at working the count; he has had 32 PAs where he was down 0-2 in the count and the count wound up 3-2. He has had 13 walks where the count on him was 0-2 or 1-2. He makes the pitcher work.

3) Phillies are now 13-37 on the road, but if you look at their record in road games in just the first five innings, it is even worse-- Hamels' no-hitter was just sixth time in 50 road games they led after five innings. They've been tied 14 times (6-30-14).

2) Latrell Sprewell once turned down a 3-year, $27M contract from Minnesota at the end of his career in 2005- now he is broke. Who does something like that? There was a story this week about Antoine Walker making $108M in his playing career but being broke two years after he retired.

Athletes/musicians should take money management classes in college; actually, we all should, but those guys have a lot more money to deal with than I ever did.

1) Big day in Cooperstown today: Craig Biggio, Pedro Martinez, John Smoltz, Randy Johnson and Dick Enberg are getting inducted. I've been to Cooperstown a lot, living 80 miles away-- it is a small town, hard to get to, very historic. I think if I came across the country to see it, I'd be a little disappointed, but the museum itself is very cool.

Moore leads West to WNBA All-Star victory

UNCASVILLE, Conn. -- Maya Moore has played in plenty of big games in Connecticut, so it shouldn't come as a surprise that the Minnesota Lynx guard and two-time national champion at Connecticut stole the spotlight at Saturday's WNBA All-Star Game at Mohegan Sun Arena.

Moore scored 10 of her team's final 12 points to finish with an All-Star Game record 30 and lead the Western Conference to a 117-112 victory over the Eastern Conference.

"It's really fun to be able to play well in front of a crowd that's going to appreciate it," said Moore, who went 150-4 with the Huskies and reached four Final Fours in four years at UConn.

"It's going to be a toss up between the Minnesota fans and these fans, both near and dear to my heart. If I was going to do it in front of any other fans that weren't Minnesota, I would want it to be here in Connecticut. (I) had a blast doing it."

Moore, selected the game's most valuable player, drained the go-ahead 3-pointer with 1:51 remaining in the game. The guard scored 19 points in the second half and made six 3-pointers while totaling six rebounds and five assists in her fourth All-Star Game.

Britney Griner's emphatic third-quarter dunk and ensuing 3-pointer highlighted the Phoenix Mercury center's dominant performance for the West.

Griner, who was plus-17 on the floor for the game, collected 21 points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots.

"I'm just trying to bring something exciting to the game," Griner said. "Get more people involved, get more people watching, and just have fun. Honestly, I just love to do it."

Guard-forward Kayla McBride of the San Antonio Stars scored 18 off the bench for the West.

Shoni Schimmel of the Atlanta Dream, winner of last year's WNBA All-Star Game MVP award after her then league-record 29-point performance, made a pull-up 3-pointer to give the East a 106-105 lead with 2:04 remaining. The guard finished with 13 points and six assists.

Guard Alex Bentley of the host Connecticut Sun gave the local fans something to cheer about, scoring 23 points for the East on 5-of-8 shooting from 3-point range in her first All-Star Game.

"I've been dreaming for events and days like this all my life," Bentley said. "I've been wanting to play basketball since I was 5- or 6-years-old.

"I used to go to the Indiana Fever games and want to be in their shoes, want to be in (Fever forward) Tamika Catching's shoes."

Catchings, playing in her 10th and final All-Star Game, scored eight points to pass retired Los Angeles Sparks legend Lisa Leslie for the most career All-Star Game points (108) in history.

Guard-forward Elena Delle Donne of the Chicago Sky, the WNBA's leading scorer at the break averaging 24.5 points, added 16 points and eight rebounds for the East.

Griner and the West built a four-point lead midway through the first quarter, but the East took advantage of the additional floor spacing when Griner subbed out at the 4:56 mark and closed the period on a 20-6 run to take a 34-24 lead after one and went ahead by 12 early in the second.

After checking back in with 7:08 left in the first half and the West down by 10 points, Griner immediately made an impact on the boards, grabbing six of her seven first-half rebounds in a span of 6:49 as the West pulled to within 59-58 at halftime.

A layup by Tulsa Shock forward-center Plenette Pierson gave the West a 93-91 lead heading into the fourth quarter. The game was last tied, 102-102, with 4:08 to play in the final quarter.

NOTES: Mohegan Sun Arena hosted the WNBA All-Star Game for the fourth time. ... WNBA president Laurel J. Richie spoke about the impending relocation of the Tulsa Shock to Dallas before the game. "As excited as we are about that move to Dallas, I would be remiss if I didn't very, very genuinely thank the people of Tulsa," she said. Richie also said the league is getting "closer and closer" to expansion. ... Indiana Fever F Tamika Catchings of the East became the first WNBA player to earn 10 All-Star selections. "It's a blessing to be around the WNBA and have as many years as I've had to play and perform," she said. ... Seattle Storm G Sue Bird and Phoenix Mercury G-F DeWanna Bonner started for the West in place of injured Tulsa Shock G Skylar Diggins (right ACL tear) and Minnesota Lynx G Seimone Augustus (right knee surgery).
