CFL need-to-know Week 1 betting stats and trends

Easy Riders

Saskatchewan, unlike Hamilton, has been quick out of the blocks each year over the past decade. The Roughriders are an impressive 8-2 SU and ATS in their season opener since 2005, including a 5-1 SU and ATS count at home during that span. The Riders play host to rivals Winnipeg as 7.5-point home favorites Saturday.

Saskatchewan is also 7-3 Over/Under in those last 10 openers, going 4-2 O/U at home in that stretch. The Roughriders have scored an average of 34.3 points while allowing 24.1 points against during those Week 1 outings. Saturday’s total is set at 48.

Home sweet dome

The Edmonton Eskimos travel to the “Big Smoke” to take on the Toronto Argonauts in Week 1 Saturday, with Toronto set as a 4.5-point underdog in the Rogers Centre. The Argos have actually been a solid play at home during Week 1, going back to 2005, with a 2-2 SU and 3-1 ATS mark in that span. However, the Eskimos are 5-1 ATS in their last six trips to Toronto, so take that trend with a grain of salt.

The Argonauts are also a profitable 2-8 Over/Under in Week 1 games the last 10 seasons, with a 1-3 O/U count at home. Toronto has scored an average of 23.6 points in those games while giving up 25 points against. Saturday’s total is set at 49.5 points.

Game of the day: Eskimos at Argonauts
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Edmonton Eskimos at Toronto Argonauts (+7.5, 48.5)

Toronto will be without standout quarterback Ricky Ray and Edmonton signal caller Mike Reilly might not be at full strength when the Argonauts host the Eskimos in Saturday's CFL opener for both teams. Ray is still recovering from offseason shoulder surgery while Reilly mysteriously was in for just two plays in Edmonton's preseason finale.

Reilly bristled as speculation swirled that he was dealing with a concussion issue. "I find that to be a bit of a shame," Reilly told reporters. "I think that's a problem when members of the media are speculating there's an injury of any kind, let alone a concussion." The situation is clearer for Toronto as Trevor Harris will start in place of Ray, who passed for a league-best 4,595 yards last season. "It's a little bit different knowing that you're going to play but it's just a different feeling," Harris told reporters. "It's not any different in preparation or the way I study my game plan, watch film or anything of that nature."

TV: 5 p.m. ET, TSN

LINE HISTORY: Books opened the Eskies as 5-point road faves but that has moved to -7.5. The total opened at 50 but has come down to 48.5.

INJURY REPORT: Eskimos - OL Greg Wojt (Out, neck), DT Gregory Alexander (Out, undisclosed), WR Wallace Miles (Out, undisclosed). Argonauts - OL Brandon Braxton (Questionable, suspension).

ABOUT THE ESKIMOS (2014: 12-6 SU, 12-6 ATS, 5-13 O/U): Edmonton suffered a huge blow in the preseason as leading rusher John White (852 yards) ruptured his left Achilles' tendon, leaving the unproven duo of Shakir Bell and Kendial Lawrence and recently signed Chad Simpson (1,039 yards for Winnipeg in 2012) to battle for playing time. Reilly passed for 3,327 yards and 16 touchdowns last season and his favourite target will again be Adarius Bowman, who set career bests for receptions (112) and yardage (1,456) last season. The Eskimos led the CFL in scoring defense (18.9) and total defense (279.4) last season with linebacker Dexter McCoil (tied for the CFL lead with six interceptions, while adding 67 tackles and four sacks) bursting on the scene to win Most Outstanding Rookie honours.

ABOUT THE ARGONAUTS (2014: 8-10 SU, 7-11 ATS, 8-10 O/U): Harris has thrown 94 passes in three previous seasons with Toronto and passed for 281 yards, two touchdown and one interception against Ottawa in his lone 2014 start. He has a solid duo of targets in Chad Owens (86 receptions for 989 yards and seven touchdowns last season) and Andrew Durie, who had just 19 catches in 2014 due to a broken collarbone after having 92 catches for 986 yards in 2013. The defense is led by second-year lineman Tristan Okpalaugo (team-high 12 sacks) and veteran lineman Ricky Foley, who played for the Argonauts from 2010-12 and tied his career high of 12 sacks last season for Saskatchewan.

TRENDS:

* Over is 5-0 in the last five meetings.
* Eskimos are 6-2 ATS in their last eight meetings.
* Eskimos are 4-9 ATS in their last 13 games in Week 1.
* Under is 10-2 in Argonauts last 12 games in Week 1.

CONSENSUS: Fifty-six percent of users are on the Argos.

Eskimos-Argos meetings tend to be explosive affairs

The Edmonton Eskimos and Toronto Argonauts meet in the lone CFL game Saturday and if history is any indication, we could be in store for some offensive fireworks.

Over wagers have cashed in five consecutive meetings between the two teams thanks to an average of 65.2 points scored per game over that stretch.

The Argos have a 4-1 edge straight up in those five meetings, while the Eskies have won at the betting window going 3-2 against the spread.

Oddsmakers opened Saturday's tilt with a total of 50, but that has come down to 48.5 as of Friday evening.

Lincecum starts have been an Over bettors' dream

The Over has been on fire in San Francisco Giants righty Tim Lincecum's recent starts, cashing in six-straight games heading into Saturday's meeting with the Colorado Rockies at AT&T Park.

There has been an average of 9.7 runs scored per game over that stretch, with the Giants coming out on top in three of those.

Lincecum's 14 starts have resulted in an 8-5-1 Over/Under record so far this season.

Christopher Rusin is scheduled to get the ball for the Rockies. Oddsmakers have a total of 7 on the board as of Friday evening.

The Atlanta Braves are expected to start Julio Teheran Saturday afternoon. Among pitchers with at least 10 starts on the season, Teheran is tops for Over bettors with a 12-3 Over/Under record in 15 starts in 2015.

The 24-year-old righy has a personal record of 5-3, a 4.67 ERA and a 1.39 WHIP on the season. He had a streak of eight consecutive Overs snapped in his last outing when he went seven strong innings surrendering just one hit in a 1-0 win over the New York Mets.

Over wagers sizzling in this pitcher's starts

Over bets have cashed in three straight and seven of the past eight starts by Milwaukee Brewers righty Matt Garza.

Garza owns a 6.85 ERA in those previous eight starts, over a full run more than his season-to-date ERA of 5.48. Twice in those eight starts, including his last trip to the mound, he surrendered 10 runs.

Garza is scheduled to get the start against the Minnesota Twins at Miller Park Saturday afternoon.

Jays' lefty Boyd expected to make debut Saturday

The Toronto Blue Jays are expected to give southpaw Matt Boyd the start when the host the Texas Rangers Saturday afternoon.

Boyd was scratched from his Thursday start for Triple-A Buffalo, where he has made two starts since a call up from Double-A. He has allowed one run in each start at Buffalo and hasn't walked hitter while fanning a dozen.

Yovani Gallardo is expected to start for the visitors.

Rays cashing against lefty starters recently

The Tampa Bay Rays have won their last nine games when going up against a left-handed starting pitching. The Rays, and their backers, will to make it 10 as they face the Boston Red Sox and southpaw Wade Miley Saturday afternoon.

The recent trend began against Wei-Yin Chen and continued with wins against C.J. Wilson, Hector Santiago, Roenis Elias, J.A. Happ, Mike Montgomery, John Danks, Chris Sale and, most recently, Gio Gonzalez.

The Rays opened -111 with Matt Andriese scheduled to take the bump Saturday.

These clubs love going Under totals

When the Texas Rangers and Toronto Blue Jays have met recently, Under bettors have been profiting.

The Under is 9-2 in the last 11 contests between the two clubs. They'll face off once again Saturday where Matt Boyd and Yovani Gallardo take the bump for the Jays and Rangers, respectively.

As of this writing, the line was off the board.

Pitcher change announced - Steven Matz, NY Mets

NY Mets vs. Cincinnati on June 28 at 1:10 PM. Previous Starter: Jon Niese.

Which team is on an 8-game Over streak?

The Philadelphia Phillies have been participating in a lot of high-scoring games lately, and Over bettors are reaping the rewards.

The Over has paid out in each of the Phillies' last seven games. Philly turns to southpaw Adam Morgan on the bump for Friday's clash with the Washington Nationals. The Nats are slated to counter with Gio Gonzalez.

Sportsbooks are currently dealing an 8 run total for the NL matchup.

Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

Pointspreads for six of college football's more interesting games this year:

-- Oct 3: Alabama at Georgia (even)

-- Oct 15: UCLA at Stanford (-4.5)

-- Oct 24: Tennessee at Alabama (-10)

-- Nov 21: USC at Oregon (-6.5)

-- Nov 28: Ohio State (-16) at Michigan

-- Nov 28: Florida State (-4) at Florida

**********

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here.....

13) Max Scherzer won again, 5-2 over Philly; runs he allowed ended an amazing streak where Washington starters didn't allow a run for 47 innings.

12) Cleveland is now 3-13 in Kluber starts; he won the Cy Young last year. Been a tough year for the Indians, but this is very surprising.

11) Horrendous news for the Miami Marlins and my fantasy baseball team: last night in Miami, Giancarlo Stanton hurt his left hand swinging a bat and will have an MRI this morning. No bueno.

10) Kid named Matt Boyd makes his MLB debut for Toronto this afternoon; 24-year old from Oregon State is a distant relative of the great pitcher Bob Feller.

9) Graphic contrast between NBA and NHL drafts; at NHL draft, the whole front office of a team comes on stage to make first round selections. All you see at the NBA Draft are the kids selected and their families. Team executives aren't there.

NHL moves its draft all over the league; NBA stays in NYC. Advantage, NHL.

8) Eight of the top 13 picks in the NBA Draft played one year of college, which is a rule that needs to change. It makes college a joke; you know kids aren't going to class second semester, since they know they're gone anyway.

Kids should be able to go straight from high school to the pros, like in baseball.

7) David West is expected to sign with the Knicks as a free agent; good luck there.

6) Analysis of Kelly Oubre on NBA TV Wednesday night: "The only way he gets drafted this high is if someone is afraid they'll look foolish if he becomes great." Now there is a ringing endorsement for a player. Just pick players who play well in games, not ones who excel in workouts or have great potential. It is a simple thing.

5) If my $1M+ a year job running a basketball team depended on the team I assembled winning games, I would never, ever, ever select a player whose effort was an issue. Ever. Effort has to be a non-negotiable thing; great players bring great effort every day

4) It drives me nuts when I hear an analyst say "that kid's a winner" as if it is pre-ordained that he will always win. For every winner there has to be a loser but I refuse to believe there are people in this world who are pre-ordained losers.

3) One quick NFL note: Patriots beat Jets twice last year, 27-25/17-16; in the two games, they were outgained by 80 and 76 yards. Go figure.

2) SI.com had Christian Wood listed as the #26 pick in the draft; there are 30 teams, two rounds- thats obviously 60 picks, yet Wood wasn't selected. What geniuses are giving this kid such bad information? Wood could've gone back to UNLV, become a better player, gotten stronger, now he is off to the obscurity of the D-League, where he may or may not ever get a shot at the NBA.

1) The picture of Wood in the Las Vegas paper, slumped in a chair, head in hands, is both sad and aggravating. The kid heard what he wanted to hear, but he got bad advice, life-altering bad advice. He had a reputation for not working hard enough and his thin frame betrayed a lack of effort in the weight room. He better start working harder now, or else his great opportunity is going to go to waste.

Scenes from Sin City: NCAAF Games of the Year release is a special time for one N.J. couple

Jun 26, 2015

How big is the Golden Nugget’s annual unveiling of its College Football Games of the Year? So big that for the past five years, professional bettor Joe Fortuna has traveled all the way from New Jersey to get his bets down, at $1,000 a pop.

This year, though, he’s made it a little easier on himself. Fortuna and his wife Marissa moved to Las Vegas 2 1/2 months ago, so the trip to the Golden Nugget on Friday afternoon was a short one.

“I was trying to hold out for sports betting in New Jersey, but it’s just the same old, same old there,” Fortuna lamented, before quickly putting a happy face back. “It’s like my Christmas every year. As soon as I find out the dates, I’m out here.”

Marissa is fully engaged in the process, too. The two of them occupied a table in the back of the book about a half hour before the lines officially posted Friday afternoon. Betting sheets and spreadsheets covered the table, along with their iPad – with a spreadsheet open that basically breaks down every college football team and every game for the 2015 season.

“She helps a lot,” Joe said, noting Marissa's Excel expertise helps in the process.

It probably wasn’t what Marissa expected when she and Joe got together six years ago – at a New York Yankees game – but it’s second nature now.

“It’s been my life since I met him,” she said. “It’s definitely exciting, and I’m definitely a fan. I’ve always liked sports, so it’s something we do together.”

With this being a pretty slow time of year, Joe said it’s great to have Games of the Year roll out every June.

“Nobody likes baseball,” he said. “It shows that college football is right around the corner. It gets you ready. Plus, you can get a lot of value out of these numbers. I got 22 points off the TCU-SMU game last year. I got TCU -10, and it went off at TCU -32.”

TCU flattened the Mustangs, 56-0. Joe said he made 30 bets last year and came out about $10,000 ahead. Looking over this year’s numbers, he said the sledding might be a little tougher.

“They’re a little harder,” he said, tipping his cap to those who set the lines for the 166 games – the Nuggets’ Tony Miller and Aaron Kessler, and The Gold Sheet editor Bruce Marshall. “Kudos to them. There are a couple of half-point games I’m not gonna take. I may not get to $30,000. These are real tight numbers.”

Scenes From Sin City: Father and son make trip from TN to LV

Jun 26, 2015

Every year, Trey Vantrease and his dad, Brownie Vantrease, make a summer sojourn from Nashville, Tenn., to Las Vegas to play some poker and get down on some college football. On past trips, they’ve generally arrived within a week of the Golden Nugget posting its college football Games of the Year.

But this year, for the first time, they were actually here the day all 166 games were revealed. And they found out it was a whole different ballgame.

“Oh man, it’s exciting,” Trey said, as bettors crowded the window at the intimate sportsbook. “There’s a lot of action going around, people trying to get in early before the lines start moving. Next year, we’re hoping to be out here on the day it opens again.”

Said Brownie: “We were afraid it was gonna be chaos, which it is, but it’s not as bad as we thought. It’s amazing that $1,000 bets can move the line. But we understand the book doesn’t want to get exposed.”

Trey said he was near the front of the line, but even that wasn’t quite good enough to keep intact all the lines he wanted to bet
.
“There were a couple games that by the time we got up there, they’d already moved a point. It surprised me,” he said. “Stuff is moving early and often, that’s for sure.”

Though they hail from Tennessee, Trey and Brownie have little allegiance to the Vols. Trey was sporting an Alabama baseball cap, and they were firing away against the home-state squad.

“We took Oklahoma as a dog and Georgia as a pick ‘em, and Alabama to cover against Tennessee. Those are the three I liked the most,” Trey said.

Scenes From Sin City: Games of the Year unveiling like Christmas morning

Jun 27, 2015

Brian Leonard has been betting sports for quite some time and has lived in Las Vegas for the past 17 years. So when late June rolls around and the Golden Nugget sportsbook puts up lines for its college football Games of the Year, Leonard definitely wants in on the action.

“I’ve bet nine games so far,” he said, about a half-hour after the numbers went up Friday afternoon.

He might have bet more, but Leonard has found that those making the numbers – sportsbook director Tony Miller, assistant director Aaron Kessler and The Gold Sheet editor Bruce Marshall – get better at this every year. They’ve been doing this since 2007, and this year’s slate features 166 games scattered throughout the season.

“They did a really good job,” Leonard said. “Sometimes I get up to 27 points. But the games I’m looking at, they seem to be doing well with the numbers.”

But he did find one he liked quite a bit: Nevada as a hefty home favorite against instate rival UNLV.

“I laid the 14,” he said, noting UNLV has a new coach in Tony Sanchez who is making the huge jump from Bishop Gorman High School, a Las Vegas program that’s gained national recognition. “UNLV has got a high school football coach. A handful of coaches have done that, and not really done it with any success. Plus, this is a huge rivalry game that means more to Nevada.”

After making his wagers, Leonard stood back and soaked in the vibe as bettors continued to crowd the wagering windows.

“This is like Christmas morning for me,” he said. “I only got three hours of sleep last night.”

Indeed, Leonard said what makes him so eager for this day every year is that he feels he’s got much less competition.

“Lots of people don’t want to put money out so far in advance,” he said. “But I’m going up against one person’s opinion, versus millions of opinions during game week.”

Scenes From Sin City: Ohio State-Michigan line movement suprises Golden Nugget sportsbook

It was a busy first couple of hours after the Golden Nugget sportsbook released its 2015 college football Games of the Year. Just the way sportsbook director Tony Miller likes it.

“It’s been good, and this is just the first wave,” he said around 2:15 p.m., 40 minutes after the Nugget posted the lines and began taking wagers. “After 5 o’clock, the second wave comes in. The handle was really good, so I’m really happy with it.”

But it’ll be months before he knows how well his lines will hold up.

“The wiseguys have a lot of opinions against us, so we’ll see how we come out against them,” Miller said.

So in the early going, what was the one line movement that most surprised Miller?

“Ohio State-Michigan,” he said, noting the major rivalry game at the Big House on Nov. 28. “It went from Ohio State -16 to -14. They bet Michigan, thinking Jim Harbaugh is gonna give the Buckeyes a game.”
