Storm-Stars Preview
Although the Seattle Storm and San Antonio Stars are on four-game losing streaks and at the bottom of the Western Conference, the final playoff spot is well within reach.
Both clubs look to draw closer to Los Angeles for that postseason berth when they meet at Freeman Coliseum on Saturday night.
Despite their struggles, the Storm (5-16) and Stars (6-16) aren't far behind the 7-14 Sparks.
Seattle will be playing its fourth in a six-game stretch on the road, where it's 1-11. The Storm fell 78-62 to New York in its most recent outing Sunday, getting outscored 24-9 in the third quarter to turn a one-point halftime deficit into an insurmountable margin.
"We just had a lot of breakdowns in the third quarter," coach Jenny Boucek told the team's official website. "They (Liberty) really took it to us."
Sue Bird scored 14 points but shot 5 of 17 for Seattle, which made 38.7 percent from the field. Still, she became the first player in WNBA history to amass 5,000 points and 2,000 assists during the contest.
Bird, tied for second in the league in assists per game at 5.2, will go up against San Antonio's Danielle Robinson, also averaging 5.2.
The Stars return home after dropping two straight on the road, the most recent a 66-63 loss to Washington on Wednesday. Jia Perkins scored a team-high 23 points but went 1 of 6 from 3-point range and missed a potential tying shot from beyond the arc as the final buzzer sounded.
San Antonio is winless in 11 games away from Freeman Coliseum this season.
Perkins, averaging 11.6 points on the year, has scored 20.7 over the last three games.
Stars coach Dan Hughes was knocked over by a hustling Robinson during the second quarter and had to be taken off the floor on a stretcher with a back injury. However, he's expected to be on the sideline Saturday.
''Coach Hughes is doing well,'' a team spokesman said.
Robinson failed to score Wednesday, missing her five shots, but recorded nine assists. Kayla McBride scored 18 points and Sophia Malcolm-Young chipped in 17, but San Antonio's bench contributed just five points.
Saturday will be the second of five meetings between the teams this season. The Stars won the first 73-71 on June 27 in San Antonio after trailing by 12 in the third quarter.
McBride scored a game-high 23 points and hit a runner with 22.7 seconds remaining to put San Antonio ahead before rebounding Bird's miss in the final seconds to wrap it up. Langhorne scored 18 to lead Seattle, which had won three straight in San Antonio.
