Friday's Matinee Cheat Sheet

The day after Thanksgiving means a day of quiet contemplation about how much you've eaten...and a ton of matinee action in all sports. So we bring you the quick one stop shop for all the afternoon games.

NBA:

Chicago Bulls at Boston Celtics (-1, 201)

The Chicago Bulls might yet prove to be one of the top teams in the Eastern Conference, but they'll hardly resemble one when they face the Boston Celtics on Friday. The Bulls could be without three starters — Derrick Rose (hamstring), Joakim Noah (knee) and Taj Gibson (ankle) — when they continue their seven-game road trip. The Celtics could use a break, having lost five of their last six with the lone victory against winless Philadelphia.

Chicago has gone 2-3 on its trip, which wraps up Sunday at Brooklyn, after a short-handed 114-109 loss at Denver on Tuesday in which Noah and Gibson sat out and Rose was limited to two points in 10 minutes. "Derrick's not the only one," Bulls coach Tom Thibedeau told reporters. "We've got a lot of stuff going on here. We've got to get people healthy." The Celtics won the first meeting this season, 106-101 in Chicago, despite playing without star point guard Rajon Rondo.

TRENDS:

*Bulls are 0-4 ATS in their last 4 road games.
*Over is 10-2 in Celtics last 12 games following a ATS loss.
*Bulls are 5-1-1 ATS in the last 7 meetings

NHL:

New York Rangers at Philadelphia Flyers (-110, 5.5)

The New York Rangers stopped a losing skid when they hosted the Metropolitan Division-rival Philadelphia Flyers in the teams' first meeting of the season last week. Coach Alain Vigneault's club hopes to prevent another one from forming when it visits the Flyers on Friday afternoon to open a home-and-home set. Rick Nash, who scored in New York's 2-0 triumph over Philadelphia to end an 0-1-2 slide, collected his team-leading 15th goal and an assist in a 4-3 setback to Tampa Bay on Wednesday.

Nash has recorded a goal in three straight and 13 of 21 games this season, a point in 16 of 21 and notched his 300th career assist against the Lightning. While those numbers certainly are impressive, Philadelphia is stringing together some rather gaudy numbers in its own right - albeit on the negative side after its 5-2 setback to Detroit on Wednesday. The Flyers have lost six of seven overall (1-5-1) and fell to 0-5-1 in their last six road contests heading into Saturday's tilt in the house of horrors that is Madison Square Garden, where they've dropped nine in a row.

TRENDS:

*Flyers are 1-6 in their last 7 overall.
*Over is 6-2-3 in Rangers last 11 road games.
*Home team is 24-9 in the last 33 meetings.

Chicago Blackhawks at Anaheim Ducks (-120, 5.5)

The Chicago Blackhawks are having another successful run on their annual "Circus Trip" but they must withstand a rugged back-to-back finish to the six-game trek when they visit the Pacific Division-leading Anaheim Ducks on Friday. The Blackhawks have won six of eight after a 3-2 victory at Colorado, topping an opponent that beat them four times last season. "It’s a good start to the second half of the road trip," forward Patrick Kane said. "It’s a lot better being 3-1 through the first four games than 2-2."

Anaheim is riding a three-game winning streak following a stretch in which it had won only once in seven games (1-1-5) and has had 11 of its last 12 decided by one goal, including each of the past three victories. Since dropping their season opener, the Ducks have failed to earn a point in only two of 22 games and have played a league high nine games that were settled in overtime or a shootout. Anaheim has won six of its last eight against the Blackhawks, including a 1-0 victory at Chicago on Oct. 28.
TRENDS:

*Blackhawks are 5-1 in their last 6 vs. Western Conference.
*Under is 10-0-1 in Ducks last 11 games following a win.
*Blackhawks are 6-21-2 in the last 29 meetings in Anaheim.

NCAAF:

Western Kentucky Hilltoppers at (20) Marshall Thundering Herd (-24, 74.5)

Marshall is one win away from locking up a perfect regular season. The Thundering Herd will try to improve to 12-0 when they host Western Kentucky in the regular-season finale on Friday. Marshall and defending National Champion Florida State are the only teams remaining without a loss, and the Thundering Herd are in the running for a New Year’s Six bowl game if they can hold off the Hilltoppers.

Marshall is having a hard time cracking the College Football Playoff rankings due to the strength of its schedule but is dominating the opponents in front of it and has already clinched the top spot in the Conference-USA East Division. Western Kentucky is bowl eligible as well after notching three straight wins by an average of 24.7 points. “For us, now we're in the championship game,” Hilltoppers coach Jeff Brohm told reporters of the magnitude of the matchup with the Thundering Herd. “We get to play a championship game against an undefeated team on their home turf with a lot of implications for them riding on this game. It's a great opportunity for us.”

TRENDS:

*Hilltoppers are 0-4 ATS vs. a team with a winning record.
*Thundering Herd are 14-1-1 ATS in their last 16 home games vs. a team with a winning road record.
*Over is 4-1-1 in Hilltoppers last 6 games following a S.U. win.

Arkansas Razorbacks at (17) Missouri Tigers (+3, 45)

All that stands between No. 17 Missouri and a second SEC East title is red-hot Arkansas. The visiting Razorbacks enter Friday's new rivalry after snapping a 17-game conference losing streak with back-to-back shutouts of LSU and Ole Miss. It is the first regular-season meeting between the teams since 1963 but the first of many as they will face off at the end of the year as permanent cross-division opponents.

The Tigers defense, which is allowing just 109.3 rushing yards in conference games, will have its hands full with Arkansas' big offensive line and tough running backs. "We've done a pretty good job (stopping the run) and it starts up front with our rush defense," Missouri coach Gary Pinkel said. "This is going to be a challenge for us. They're very good at what they do." Missouri has outscored its opponents 149-85 during its five-game win streak.

TRENDS:

*Razorbacks are 10-1 ATS vs. a team with a winning record.
*Tigers are 21-8-1 ATS in their last 30 games overall.
*Under is 12-3 in Tigers last 15 home games vs. a team with a winning road record.

Stanford Cardinal at (10) UCLA Bruins (-5.5, 50)

Tenth-ranked UCLA controls its destiny in the chase for the Pac-12 South crown and will play in the title game if it defeats visiting Stanford on Friday. The Bruins have won five consecutive games and have a lot of momentum entering the match with the Cardinal, who have frustrated UCLA’s offense in recent seasons. “They are good tacklers and disciplined,” Bruins coach Jim Mora told reporters. “We’re going to have to be very precise in everything that we do in order to get yards against them.”

Stanford won’t have standout receiver and returner Ty Montgomery (team-high 61 receptions) after he departed last week’s victory over California with a shoulder injury. “Ty will be out of this game,” Cardinal coach David Shaw told reporters. “He will not play this game and hopefully we’ll get him ready for the bowl game, which looks like a distinct possibility.” Stanford has been out of the Pac-12 title game chase and is in the midst of its fewest victories since 2008.

TRENDS:

*Under is 12-3 in Cardinal last 15 conference games.
*Over is 4-0 in Bruins last 4 Friday games.
*Cardinal are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 meetings.

(21) Colorado State Rams at Air Force Falcons (+7.5, 59.5)

Colorado State visits Air Force on Friday in the regular-season finale for both teams and should the No. 21 Rams prevail, they will become huge fans of Utah State. Colorado State is tied with No. 25 Boise State and Utah State atop the Mountain Division of the Mountain West Conference and can advance to the MWC title game with a victory, coupled with a Broncos loss to the Aggies on Saturday night. "At the end of the day, we can control only what we can control,'' Rams senior quarterback Garrett Grayson, who has guided Colorado State to its first double-digit win season since 2002, told the Denver Post.

The Rams possess star power in sophomore wide receiver Rashard Higgins, who leads the nation in receiving yards and touchdowns, and Alabama transfer Dee Hart, a 1,000-yard rusher who scored six touchdowns in last week's 58-20 victory over New Mexico. The Falcons saw their four-game winning streak snapped with a 30-14 loss at San Diego State on Nov. 21 as they began life without leading rusher Jacobi Owens, who is out for the season (foot). Air Force could also be slowed by an unspecified injury to quarterback Kale Pearson, who did not participate in team drills Monday but was present and in uniform.

TRENDS:

*Rams are 10-2 ATS in their last 12 road games.
*Falcons are 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games following a S.U. loss.
*Over is 7-0 in the last 7 meetings.

NCAAB:

Yale Bulldogs at (25) Providence Friars

LaDontae Henton and streaking Providence will try to avoid looking ahead when they host Yale on Friday. The 25th-ranked Friars, who rode Henton's career-high 38 points and last-second shot deflection to a 75-74 win over Notre Dame in the Hall of Fame Tip-Off Classic on Sunday, will next visit top-ranked Kentucky. Providence, ranked in a national poll for the first time since the end of the 2004 season, has won 38 straight home games against non-conference opponents.

The Bulldogs, picked to finish second in the Ivy League, have rebounded from a double-overtime loss at Quinnipiac in the opener to win five in a row, the latest an 82-60 home victory over Lafayette on Wednesday. Justin Sears led four players in double figures with 17 points and Yale had a 47-20 advantage on the glass. Providence has won five straight meetings with Yale, including a 76-74 triumph last Dec. 17 when Henton scored a big basket in the final minute to complete a 13-point effort.

TRENDS:

*Bulldogs are 6-1-1 ATS in their last 8 road games.
*Over is 8-1 in Friars last 9 games following a ATS win.
*Bulldogs are 3-0-1 ATS in the last 4 meetings in Providence.

James Madison Dukes at (17) Ohio State Buckeyes

Ohio State is blowing through mid-major competition with the most efficient offense in the country led by freshman D’Angelo Russell. The 17th-ranked Buckeyes try to stay undefeated when they host James Madison as part of the Buckeye Classic on Friday. Ohio State has won its last two games by an average of 42.5 points and is shooting 60.8 percent from the field as a team.

The Buckeyes went into Wednesday leading the nation in field-goal percentage and barely lowered the mark while shooting 60.7 percent in a 91-64 win over Campbell. “I’m not sure how much longer we can shoot at this clip, but I think guys are taking more pride in their shots and seeing the ball go through the basket,” coach Thad Matta told reporters. The Dukes are not shooting the ball as well but have won four straight since dropping their opener to Virginia.

TRENDS:

*Dukes are 0-5 ATS in their last 5 road games.
*Over is 4-0 in Buckeyes last 4 games following a S.U. win.
*Buckeyes are 1-9 ATS in their last 10 games overall.

Armadillo's Write-Up

Friday, November 28

Providence is 5-0 after beating Florida State/Notre Dame last weekend on neutral floor; they're forcing turnovers on 23.7% of possesions. Yale shot 57% inside arc in 76-74 loss to Friars LY; Bulldogs won last five games after opening OT loss to Quinnipiac. Ivy League road underdogs are 3-5 vs spread this month; Big East home favorites are 8-4.

Creighton is 5-0, beating five stiffs and Oklahoma, after they were down 18 in second half; Bluejays' schedule is in top 20 easiest ones so far this month. Ole Miss lost in OT to only top 200 team they've played; Rebels are 3-1 despite turning ball over 22.9% of time; they miss departed PG Henderson. SEC underdogs are 3-7 vs spread so far this month.

Tyndall may not last long at Tennessee because of NCAA issues, but he is a good coach, especially as an underdog; Vols held Santa Clara to one hoop in first 10:00 of second half Thursday- they used three guys 31+ minutes. Young Kansas team held URI to 34% inside arc in easy win yeserday; Jayhawks don't force lot of turnovers, just missed shots.

Big East underdogs are 8-0 vs spread this month; Marquette is 3-2 after 72-70 win over Ga Tech; Carlino scored 38 points without making hoop inside arc (8-14 3's, 14-16 FTs). Michigan State crushed overmatched Rider yesterday; Spartans made 12-25 from arc, were up 32-11 at half. Glorified practice. All Marquette starters played 30:00+ vs Tech.

Georgetown had tough games last two days vs Florida/Oklahoma, each going down to wire; they were up 9 on Wisconsin with 11:36 left to play yesterday, now they face league rival Butler who they beat by 3 in OT at Hinkle, by 8 at home LY. Bulldogs pounded UNC on boards Wednesday but shot just 24% yesterday- this isn't good format for 7-man rotation.

Oklahoma took more 3's than 2's in opening win over UCLA, but made 67% inside arc vs Butler yesterday; all five Sooner starters played 30+ minutes vs Butler, but three subs played 10:00+ also. Wisconsin won in game where Kaminsky scored six points, but they shot 56% inside arc vs Georgetown. Sooners are holding teams to 22% from the arc.

Florida is struggling right now, beating UAB by 9, UL-Monroe in OT, losing to Miami/Georgetown. Gators played four guys 32:00+ vs UAB, shooting just 34% from floor. North Carolina bounced back after Butler loss, playing ten guys 10+ minutes, holding UCLA to 1-14 from arc, only nine offensive boards. C-USA underdogs are 5-2 on neutral floor.

Xavier is 5-0 after beating San Diego by 11; Toreros have good guards, thats a decent win. Musketeers are making 64% of shots inside arc this month; only one of five victims is ranked lower than #111. UTEP beat Princeton by 6, playing three starters 32:00+; defending their offense is tougher than most, especially for team playing only fourth game.

Washington crushed San Jose State; Huskies are 4-0, but are in bottom 15 in country forcing turnovers, against a bottom 25 schedule. Long Beach hammered pretty good Western Michigan squad by 18; Broncos are by far worst team 49ers played this month. Beach is turning ball over 24.9% of time, making 40.4% from arc. This is best team Huskies have played.

4-0 Colorado State is in top 10 in country in experience; all its wins this month are by 10+ points. Rams/Pacific had yesterday off after winning first round games; State is making 41.6% of its 3's- they rank in top five in country in terms of % of hoops they get assists on. Tigers are 1-2 vs D-I teams, beating #277 Western Illinois in OT.

Mercer blew double digit second half lead to Rice last night, won in OT; Bears are 3-2, losing to Seton Hall by 16. Colorado State by 13; they're turning ball over 23% of time- they had three guys play 35+ minutes vs Rice. UCSB cruised last night over Washington State; Gauchos lost by 10, at Kansas. which means they're plenty athletic and well-coached.

Gonzaga is playing first true road game of season 2,500 miles from home after winning first five games by average of 38 points. Bulldogs play lot of guys, shoot ball well (41% from arc) and have a terrific senior guard, but Lavin has history of doing well as an underdog. St John's forced 20 Minnesota TOs in Wednesday win, outscoring them 39-21 in 2nd half.

Illinois is 5-0 after spanking Indiana State last night, but Sycamores are only team they've played ranked over #235; Illini are making 47% from arc, turning ball over only 13% of time (#3 in US). Baylor played four of its guys 30+ minutes even as they outscored guard-poor Memphis 42-15 in second half last night. Teams are shooting 38% inside arc vs Baylor.

Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

Six more NFL trends with Week 13 already underway.........

-- Buccaneers are 3-10-1 in last 14 games as a home underdog.

-- Minnesota is 4-10 in last 14 games as a favorite.

-- Saints are 5-11 in last sixteen games as a road underdog.

-- Giants covered five of their last fifteen road games.

-- Chiefs covered their last five games coming off a loss.

-- Chargers haven't covered spread in any of their last six games.

**********

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Wrapping up a very busy Friday.....

13) Ten years ago, I started a keeper fantasy baseball league because I was sick of rooting for an A's team that always lost its best players, either via free agency or a trade before free agency. The list of star players to bolt Oakland over the last 40 years is very long and now Josh Donaldson's name has been added. It sucks.

12) Its the financial reality of baseball and all that; I mean, 30 months ago, Donaldson was a former minor league catcher who was hitting .108 in the majors before getting sent back to AAA. Since then, he developed into an All-Star player who was also a fan favorite and a terrific clutch hitter (9th inning, Game 4, '12 playoffs vs Detroit).

At least no one gets dealt off my fantasy league team unless I do it, and yes, I'm sure Billy Beane has a few more moves this winter, before all this rebuilding is done.

11) One last note on this trade that worries me: Brett Lawrie is a Canadian; for the Blue Jays to trade a Canadian player means they think they got the best of this deal. Plus he gets hurt a lot, always a great thing to be known for.

10) Kansas 82, Tennessee 67-- Misleading final; this game was 62-all. Tennessee has a good team and will be an SEC contender in years to come.

9) Wisconsin 69, Oklahoma 56-- Frank Kaminsky got his lunch handed to him by Georgetown Thursday, but the media is in love with the guy; Badgers are good because they've got a lot of good shooters, and Ryan is a very good coach. Sooners also had a productive week in the Bahamas.

8) Western Kentucky 67, Marshall 66 OT-- This was a football game, the first one Marshall lost this season; hard to feel too bad for a team that was down 49-42, at the half, but what do you do with Marshall in their bowl game? They score a ton of points but history tells us that disappointed teams rarely fare well in bowls. .

7) Gonzaga 73, St John's 66-- Good road win for the Bulldogs; think they're going to the Final Four in April. As for St John's, Harrison looks like a tough guy to coach, kind of like a talented runaway train where you give him the ball and hold your breath. As a senior, you hope he has senior-level sense. You hope.....

6) Stanford 31, UCLA 10-- Bruins' dismal showing sends Arizona to the Pac-12 title game against Oregon. Wildcats beat Arizona State; if they beat the Ducks, Arizona could get to the Rose Bowl game for the first time. Big year for RichRod.

5) UTEP 77, Xavier 73-- Games like this are why I'm watching games in November before I jump into the handicapping pool; this result makes no sense, much like a lot of what we see in November makes no sense. The games count, but coaches experiment and learn much like we're learning. Good win for Tim Floyd, though.

4) Ole Miss 75, Creighton 68-- Bluejays' win over Oklahoma (they were down 18 in second half) was a fluke. This is a good win for the SEC and Andy Kennedy.

3) Missouri 21, Arkansas 14-- Mizzou's Gary Pinkel might be the most underrated college football coach; all the guy does is win.

2) Air Force 27, Colorado State 24-- Rams drop to 10-2; this was really good game, fun to watch. Wonder if Colorado State can keep McIlwain in Fort Collins.

1) Cal-Santa Barbara 65, Mercer 60 OT-- Very late at night in Alaska, Gauchos hit a 3 at the buzzer to force OT, then won and will face Colorado State very late tonight in the Alaskan Shootout final. Should be a pretty good game. Hopefully the A's won't have traded Samardzija or Kazmir by then.

Armadillo's Write-Up

Saturday, November 29

UMass is 5-1 and hasn't played anyone outside the top 150; only loss was by 13 on neutral floor to Notre Dame- they've beaten BC, Florida State- two of three vs ACC teams ain't bad. Harvard waxed Houston by 21 last game; they're 3-1 despite turning ball over 23.9% of time while play slow (#268) tempo. Crimson is #6 foul shooting team in country.

George Washington won three of first four games but lost to Virginia by 17, only good team they've played. Colonials are making just 29.7% of 3-pointers. Young Seton Hall is 4-0, beating Mercer/Illinois State, couple of decent teams. Pirates are making 46.7% of 3's this month, #5 in country. GW does have road win, at Rutgers, as well as the loss at Virginia.

VCU won its last four games vs former CAA rival Old Dominion, with wins by 21-13 points over Monarchs since teams went separate ways. First true road game for Rams, who split pair in Brooklyn, losing badly to Villanova (forced only 9 turnovers), beating Oregon. OSU is 4-1 with wins over LSU/Richmond; their only loss was by 19 to Illinois State.

Cal-Irvine is 2-2 but lost at Arizona/St Mary's; they were leading at half in Tucson. Anteaters have 7-6 center, forcing you to make outside shots to score. LMU is 2-2 vs D-I teams, losing at home to Boise State- they turned ball over 22.6% of time, are making just 27.8% of 3's as they learn coach Dunlap's system. Anteaters haven't played since Sunday.

Washington State is 2-3 after nipping Rice by hoop Friday; they've made only 39.5% inside arc, 29.8% outside it. four Coogs played 30+ minutes Friday. Missouri State lost last two D-I games by 12-15 points to Texas Tech/Colorado State; Bears only beat D-II Anchorage by 4 yesterday- they're shooting 40.4% from arc, only 43% inside it.

Veteran Colorado State (#6 in experience) is 5-0, winning first two games in Alaska by 15-11 points; Rams had already beaten Mercer, probably are happy they're not playing Bears again. UCSB hit trey at buzzer to force OT last night, then beat Mercer by 5; four Gaucho starters played 35+ minutes in game where they were -10 (19-9) in turnovers.

Drake lost four of first five games despite making 43% from arc, turning ball over 24.1% of time;; foes are shooting 56.8% against them inside arc. Only two Bulldogs played more than 20:00 Friday. Portland is 4-0 after beating Murray State by 3 Friday; only seven Pilots played, four of them played 30:00+. Unusual for team to only play seven guys in a game.

Ohio U beat couple teams ranked outside top 300, lost to Florida Gulf Coast by 17, hard to tell much from that. Bobcats have new coach from North Dakota State, are learning new system. Belmont won last five games after opening loss at Wright State, with wins at rival Lipscomb, Western Kentucky. Bruins shoot lot of #'s, are making 37.8% of them.

St Bonaventure won last three games with Niagara by total of 9 points; Bonnies are 3-1 with all four games at home- teams are shooting 36.4% inside arc against them, #8 in country. Niagara lost two of its first three games, with last two decided by total of two points; Eagles are making just 23.9% of its 3's- they're one of 10 least experienced teams in US.

Buffalo is 3-1 and was leading Kentucky at half in game they lost; none of Bulls' three wins stand out, but two of them were on road. Canisius beat Bulls by 7-14 points last two years, but they lost last two games by 6-7 points to Bonnies/Cornell, with Cornell loss a bad one. Griffs made just 35% of shots inside the arc in their first four games.

William & Mary is 4-1 against lame schedule; none of victims are ranked in top 280- best team they've beaten is #281 Western Illinois, Wofford won last five games after opening loss at Stanford; their win over Iona is best so far, but three others were at road/neutral sites. Terriers are making 44.9% behind arc, Tribe is making just 29.8%.

Manhattan is 1-3 but teams they lost to are all in top 90; Jaspers force turnovers 28.7% of time, but if they don't force turnovers, they're fouling too much (bottom 5 in US putting foes on line). George Mason lost last three games, is scoring just 61.2 ppg so far; Patriots' only win was over Princeton at home-- they also lost at home to another Ivy team (Cornell).

TCU is 6-0 against 6th-easiest schedule in country, but they're making 40.4% of 3's so far; Frogs only played two guys more than 26:00 last night vs Bradley, in game they trailed with under 9:00 left. Mississippi State is 5-0 against almost as bad a schedule; their wins over Utah State, Saint Louis are misleading- neither team has a returning starter.

Fade & Shade Report

November 28, 2014

We're only two weeks into the college hoops season, but already some "shade" and "fade" candidates have emerged. These trends can change quickly, but as we hit the end of November, the following sides have caught our eye.

Select teams are presented in conference order.

AMERICAN

SMU....FADE. Larry Brown's Mustangs have had a tough early slate, but they are also not sneaking up on anybody this season, and the current ineligibility of key F Markus Kennedy has depleted the Ponies' frontline. No covers in first four games vs. spread.

TEMPLE...FADE. Still fully respect HC Fran Dunphy, but the Owls had a significant downturn last season, and it might take Dunphy a while to put the pieces back together. Three touted Philly-product transfers have yet to make significant contributions, with Gs Jesse Morgan (UMass) and Devin Coleman (Clemson) yet to gain eligibility and ex-Texas F Jaylen Bond dealing with an ankle injury. Owls shooting only 34.6% from floor through first five games and own just one spread cover (albeit an impressive home win over La Tech), as labored effort vs. supposedly-outmanned Big Five foe Penn on Nov. 25 suggests Temple far from a finished product until further notice.

ATLANTIC 10

RHODE ISLAND...SHADE. Regional sources had suggested to keep an eye on upgrades from Dan Hurley's Rhody, which returned four starters from last year's team that improved six wins (from 8 to 14) a season ago. A nice addition has been touted frosh G Jared Terrell, a punishing 220-pounder (in the mold of Illinois' Rayvonte Rice) already making significant contributions, scoring 12.7 ppg, and Rams have served notice with home win over Big Ten contender Nebraska. Hurley will be looking for improvement beyond the arc (Rhody just 23% triples first three games), but soph G E.C. Matthews (16.3 ppg) has assumed the go-to scoring role of graduated Xavier Munford. Upcoming Nov. 27 battle vs. Kansas will be next indicator if Rams are for real.

GEORGE MASON...FADE. The Patriots picked the wrong year to move from the Colonial to the A-10 last season, as most of the GMU teams over the previous decade (many of those coached by Jim Larranaga) would have fared far better than last year's side that skidded to an 11-20 mark, Mason first non-winning campaign in 14 years. Among the current Patriot concerns are lack of three-point shooting (only 27%), and while juco F Shevon Thompson (12 ppg) is adding some pop on the attack end, what HC Paul Hewitt needs is for Thompson or someone else to begin hitting some 3s, as the GMU halfcourt is poorly-spaced without the ability to connect from longer range. Recent last-place finish in the Puerto Rico Tip-Off is a red flag for Patriots.

ACC

MIAMI-FLA...SHADE. Jim Larranaga had to limp through last season with a depleted offense after all starters had departed following the Sweet 16 run from the previous year. Now it looks as if Larranaga's re-formulated mix has solved some of those issues, as Texas transfer F Sheldon McClellan (16.7 ppg) provides instant offense, while Kansas State transfer G Angel Rodriguez is hitting 49% beyond the arc thru first six games, all Cane wins. Miami impressively romped through the field in last week's Charleston Classic, and the new Canes are getting more familiar with Larranaga's defensive schemes, including his pet "scramble" deployment. Miami looks prepared to get back to the Dance this season.

PITT...FADE. Perhaps the Panthers will eventually round into shape and get Jamie Dixon to his familiar place in the Big Dance come March. But for the moment, the Panthers have an incomplete look, with sr. G Cameron Wright out for a month with foot problems and F Durand Johnson suspended for the season. The Panthers were non-competitive in their Maui Classic semifinal loss vs. San Diego State.

NOTRE DAME...SHADE. Though the Irish lost a close one last week to vastly underrated Providence, it looks like HC Mike Brey has the Domers back on the right track. Especially since key PG Jerian Grant (18.4 ppg and 7.2 apg thru two weeks) is back in good graces after last season's academic-related suspension cost him the second half of the 2013-14 campaign. Brey is also receiving plenty of quality minutes from 6-10 jr. Zach Auguste (16.8 ppg), who has evolved into a capable scoring threat in the post (perhaps even more dangerous than the graduated Garrick Sherman) and is shooting a cool 68% from the floor in the early going.

FLORIDA STATE...FADE. Very slow break from the gate for Leonard Hamilton's Noles, who have dropped three of four straight up and all four of those vs. the number since an opening win over Manhattan. FSU is not stretching opposing defenses because it hasn't been able to consistently shoot the three-ball with any accuracy (FSU just 25% beyond arc). Hamilton is counting heavily upon 6-4 frosh G Xavier Rathan-Mayes to help jump start the offense, though the young Canadian has been erratic in his early efforts.

BIG EAST

BUTLER...SHADE. It was an odd offseason at Hinkle Fieldhouse, with whispers that something was wrong with HC Brandon Miller, who was not seen much around the basketball facility or on the recruiting circuit. Confirming something was amiss, Miller took a medical leave of absence on October 2, thrusting assistant Chris Holtmann into the interim HC job. While Big East sources say AD Barry Collier will allow Miller to return when able, others believe Holtmann is likely to be the coach moving forward and has this season as an audition to keep the job. So far so good for the Bulldogs, who are running more with Holtmann, allowing 6-6 jr. Kellen Dunham (19 ppg) to do a pretty good Gordon Hayward imitation in the first two weeks of the season. Butler's upset win over North Carolina in the opening round of the Battle 4 Atlantis confirms the early-season ascent.

MARQUETTE...FADE. Longtime Mike Krzyzewski disciple Steve Wojciechowski gets a much-anticipated head coaching assignment, which many believe is a test run to see if "Wojo" is really going to be the man to replace Coach K whenever the latter decides to step down. Wojo, however, does not seem to have inherited a full deck from predecessor Buzz Williams (now at VPI) in Milwaukee after the departure of three double-digit scorers from last season's team that slipped to a modest 17-15 SU record after a Sweet 16 run the previous year. A home loss to Nebraska-Omaha and a labored win over NJIT within the last week suggest the Golden Eagles will not be a serious contender in this year's Big East race, as Marquette sorely lacks interior presence and has been badly beaten on the boards in its early games. Touted BYU transfer G Matt Carlino is also hitting just 32% from the floor in the early going.

BIG 12

TCU...SHADE. The Horned Frogs have been lapped by the rest of the Big 12 the past couple of years, but it looks as if Fort Worth is not going to be an easy stop this season for the many power teams in the conference. Especially since TCU will be playing home games this season in the much-cozier Wilkerson-Greines Activity Center, a 4759-seat facility located about 15 minutes from the Frogs' campus due to renovations at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum. Trent Johnson has not been sitting on his hands just collecting another paycheck at TCU, however, working the network to secure several transfers who have made an immediate impact, including ex-UTEP swingman Chris Washburn (a solid defensive presence on the perimeter) and ex-CMU and Pitt PG Trey Ziegler, who provides depth in the backcourt and relief for vastly underrated PG Kyan Anderson. Also in the mix are juco F Kenrich Williams (scored double-digits twice in first four games) plus now-healthy F Devonta Abron (missed all of 2013-14 with Achilles tendon injury). Moreover, injury-plagued 6-9 Amric Fields, who scored 13 ppg a year ago though missing about half of the term due to knee problems, is expected back soon. If Frogs really are improved, there are no soft spots in this year's Big 12.

WEST VIRGINIA...SHADE. Quick rebuild job done by Bob Huggins, whose Mountaineers served notice on the rest of the league that they must be reckoned with once more with an impressive win at last week's Puerto Rico Tip-Off, including mild upset over defending national champ UConn in title game. "Huggy" has surrounded key returnees PG Juwan Staten (18.1 ppg LY) and soph PF Devin Williams (238 rebounds as a frosh) with a collection of impactful newcomers, including Fs Jonathan Holton and Elijah Macon, both ineligible last season, and frosh Gs Jevon Carter and Daxton Miles, Jr., plus juco G Jaysean Paige, now part of lineup rotations. WVU now has lots of size and athleticism, plus depth, which allows Huggins to employ full-court pressure tactics (especially disruptive against George Mason and UConn in Puerto Rico) without worry of wearing out his troops.

BIG TEN

MARYLAND...SHADE. Early warning shot fired by conference newcomer Terps in recent Kansas City Tourney when Mark Turgeon's crew handily took care of regional preference Iowa State at the Sprint Center. Significant development in the early weeks has been immediate positive contribution of true frosh PG Melo Trimble, already scoring 15 ppg and more than adequately replacing Seth Allen, whose offseason transfer to Virginia Tech created questions at the point for Turgeon. But with Trimble scoring and effectively getting the ball to explosive 6-5 swingman Dez Wells (16.2 ppg), Maryland has displayed a very sharp offensive edge in the first few weeks of the season. Wells wrist injury suffered in the ISU win likely keeps him out until Christmas, though he should be back in the lineup before Big Ten play commences. Trimble's service abilities have also helped the team hit on nearly 50% of its field goal attempts thus far. Watch these guys.

RUTGERS...FADE. While Maryland looks as if it can become an immediate factor in the Big Ten, fellow loop newcomer Rutgers might take a lot of lumps this season. The Scarlet Knights are in year two of a patient rebuild under decorated alum, and former NBA player and assistant, Eddie Jordan, whose modified Princeton offense has proven a bit of an awkward fit in Piscataway. The Scarlet Knights aren't even hitting 40% from the floor in the early stages of the season, and the tougher (much tougher) portion of the slate is still to come. Jordan needs another reliable scoring option (or two) to step forward beyond 5-10 G Myles Mack (15.3 ppg) and active 6-9 PF Kadeem Jack (12 ppg). Remember, this team was only 12-21 (and 5-13 in league play) in the American last season.

IVY

YALE...SHADE. It might not be a one-team race in the Ivies after all, as HC James Jones' Yale is suggesting it can chase Harvard for the automatic Big Dance berth. The same five starters are back for the Eli that advanced to the CIT finale last spring, led by vet inside-outside combo of 6-8 F Justin Sears (17 ppg) and lanky 6-4 PG Javier Duren (14.3 ppg). Close opening loss to Metro-Atlantic contender Quinnipiac no embarrassment, and Bulldogs then rattled off four wins in a row, including success at the recent Kent State tournament when beating the capable host Golden Flashes after a comfy win over improved Missouri Valley rep Southern Illinois.

MOUNTAIN WEST

NEW MEXICO...FADE. The Lobos could be in the process of a steep decline, and the next several weeks could be especially difficult in Albuquerque. Newly-coifed Lobo HC Craig Neal (no more long hair!) has a lot more reloading to do than many figured after UNM disappointed in the recent Charleston Tourney, where it lost 2 of 3. After getting consistent scoring production from the high and low posts the past couple of years, the Lobos now have neither after the departures of key frontliners Cam Bairstow and Alex Kirk. And now Craig Neal's star son Cullen (a sharpshooting soph guard who was scoring team-best 17 ppg) is out until further notice with an ankle injury, forcing a lot of scoring burden upon Aussie pass-first sr. PG Hugh Greenwood (only 33% from floor and 24% beyond arc), who has looked very uncomffortable in new scoring role. Until Cullen Neal returns, and papa Craig finds some inside scoring punch, the Lobos look very vulnerable.

PAC-12

STANFORD...SHADE. Some Pac-12 insiders expected Stanford to perhaps take a step back after HC Johnny Dawkins effectively saved his job with a surprise run to the Sweet 16 last term, when graduated frontliners Dwight Powell and Josh Huestis (both DD scorers) were key components. But early efforts suggest Dawkins won't miss Powell and Huestis too much, as ballyhooed 6-8 frosh F Reid Travis (a Top 50 recruit) has hit the ground running in Palo Alto while 6-11 sr. C Stefan Nastic (15 ppg) has more than doubled his previous scoring average. Still in the mix from the Sweet 16 team are key cogs G Chasson Randle (18 ppg) and swingman Anthony Brown (14 ppg). There doesn't appear to be much downgrade on the Farm.

WASHINGTON STATE...FADE. Longtime Oregon HC Ernie Kent returns to the Pac, hired by his former Duck AD, Bill Moos, to resurrect the Coug program that lost momentum under Ken Bone after reaching some unprecedented heights for Tony Bennett a few years earlier. Early indicators suggest the rebuild is going to take a while, as Kent has inherited an incomplete roster with only one true scoring threat, G DeVonte Lacy (19.4 ppg last season), who has been schemed out of the offensive flow by opposing coaches in early action. It's still early, but until another reliable scoring option or two emerges beyond Lacy, and soph PG Que Johnson begins to tap some of his potential, Wazzu is going to be hard-pressed to improve upon its early abysmal shooting numbers (37% from floor and 29% beyond arc).

SEC

TENNESSEE...FADE This one figured as much, as all but one of the starters (and several key reserves) from last year's Sweet 16 Vol side departed, as did HC Cuonzo Martin (to Cal), who knew a couple of lean years might be on the horizon in Knoxville. New HC Donnie Tyndall, most recently at Southern Miss, would then come under the microscope this fall as the NCAA began poking around the program he left behind in Hattiesburg. The Vols had only played twice as we went to press, and not too much shame in a loss to dangerous VCU, but it would appear as if lone returning starter G Josh Richardson (10.3 ppg in 2013-14) is going to have to handle the bulk of the scoring burden until someone else emerges. A re-tooled roster and an undistinguished and baby-faced frontline spell problems in the SEC.

VANDERBILT...SHADE: Such is our respect for HC Kevin Stallings that we would not be surprised to see the Dores make a run at an NCAA bid for the first time in three years. Once a Big Dance regular, Stallings has had to endure unusual personnel issues (especially in the backcourt) the past few years, but appears to have re-stabilized the program behind do-everything 6-10 soph Damian Jones (16 ppg and 8.3 rpg in first four), who appears to be one of the conference's top frontline threats and looks a lot more confident and physically mature after taking some beatings under the boards a year ago. Stallings is also quietly confident that touted frosh Gs Riley LaChance and Wade Baldwin IV (who have both looked good in early action) will provide the needed glue that has been absent from recent Vandy backcourts. The early schedule has not been too demanding, but four wins out of the box suggests that after a brief interlude, the Dores could once again be a factor in the SEC.

Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

Six most popular picks in the Westgate Hotel handicapping contest, where some of the best handicappers in America put up $1,500 apiece, pick 5 games a week:

6) Patriots, +3-- Not often you get points with red-hot Brady.

T4) Bills, -2.5-- Buffalo back at home on short week after blizzard.
T4) Bengals, -3.5-- AFC North is 10-1-1 vs NFC South this season.

3) Ravens, -5.5-- Baltimore is 24-10 as non-divisional home favorite.

2) Giants, -2.5-- Lot of faith in team on six-game losing streak.

1) Cardinals, -2.5-- Atlanta is 0-7 against teams outside its division.

Season record of six most popular picks each week: 41-31

2013 season record of six most popular picks each week: 42-57-4

**********

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday......

13) Alabama 55, Auburn 44-- Weird game with 1,169 yards of offense; have to feel good for Crimson Tide QB Sims. TV announcers had him being yanked in third quarter when Auburn led 33-21, but then he led five consecutive TD drives in an awesome show of offensive force by the Crimson Tide.

12) Amazing intensity of the Iron Bowl game raises two questions:
a) How the hell can Alabama get up again for the SEC title game next week?
b) Would colleges be better served moving Rivalry Saturday to September?

11) Florida State 24, Florida 19-- Just win, baby. Seminoles would be Al Davis' favorite team, if Davis weren't currently deceased. Jack Nicklaus' grandson caught two TD passes and the Florida kicker missed two go-ahead FGs as FSU won another close game. 12-0 straight-up, 3-9 against the spread. Interesting team.

10) Ole Miss 31, Mississippi State 17-- Bulldogs have 63 kids from Mississippi, Rebels have only 44; thats counting walk-ons.

Why do Ole Miss and Arkansas play home games on artifical turf? Isn't the weather in Arizona and Mississippi pretty good?

9) Ole Miss 66, Cincinnati 54-- No one in Oxford probably noticed this score, but few years ago, Andy Kennedy was interim coach at Cincinnati after Bob Huggins was stupidly fired there; think he didn't like winning this game? Big win for the Rebels.

8) Louisville 44, Kentucky 40-- Very chippy game, issues after most every play and even before the game. Kentucky coach Stoops didn't look very happy with one of his defensive assistants during a Louisville TD drive, but Wildcat defense scored two TDs in this game. Losing makes a lot of us crazy.

7) Clemson 35, South Carolina 17-- First time in six years Clemson won this rivalry game. Spurrier had three troopers behind him during halftime interview; they looked VERY serious. In case you didn't think college football is very big business, turns out Clemson QB Watson is playing with a torn ACL.

6) Ohio State 42, Michigan 28-- Buckeyes won game but lost QB Barrett to broken ankle. Michigan won't go bowling for only third time in last 40 years. Hope Brady Hoke's next job is in a warm climate; tired of seeing him stand outside for four hours in cruddy weather with no coat on.

5) Serious question: Ohio State is now down to their #3 QB; does this hurt them in the polls? Do they get factored out of the playoff picture?

4) Colorado State 65, Cal-Santa Barbara 63-- Rams won Great Alaskan Shootout, an annual Thanksgiving weekend staple. Would've helped Big West's power rating to get a win over a Mountain West team.

3) Nevada 49, UNLV 27-- Gus Malzahn and Hugh Freeze were high school coaches, which apparently has inspired some wealthy UNLV backers to go after the Bishop Gorman coach to be the Rebels' new coach. Problem is, Gorman (a high school in Las Vegas) might have nicer football facilities than UNLV does.

2) Memphis 41, UConn 10-- Name you'll hear in coaching carousel: Justin Fuente of Memphis, whose Tigers are 9-3. He was a backup QB at Oklahoma much like Mark Richt was one at Miami. Rising star in the coaching business.

1) USC 49, Notre Dame 17-- Saturday was 40-year anniversary of the day Anthony Davis scored six TDs in a 55-24 thrashing of the Irish. This game was almost as much fun, but not quite. Lou Holtz probably still has Notre Dame in his top ten.

Sunday, November 30

First true road game for Texas team that is 5-0, beating Iowa by 14, Cal by 16: Longhorns are holding teams to 30.9% inside arc (#2 in US) 27.4% outside arc. Texas PG Taylor is out for while (hand). UConn hasn't played in week since losing by 10 to West Virginia in finals of tourney in Puerto Rico; best team 3-1 Huskies have beaten is #64 Dayton.

Kentucky is 6-0 with 71-52 win over Buffalo (trailed at half) closest of six games; Wildcats are grabbing 49% of their own misses, holding teams to 28.7% inside arc (#1 in US). Providence won't be awed, being in Big East; Friars are 6-0 with wins over Florida State/Notre Dame. PC makes 55.1% of its shots inside arc, forces turnovers 23.2% of time.

DePaul lost last game to Lehigh after beating UIC by point in first game; Blue Demons havwe fairly experienced team, but still seem to be running in place- best win was by 18 over Drake. Stanford split pair last week in Brooklyn, crushing UNLV, losing by 11 to Duke. Best team they've beat so far was #93 Wofford by 15. First true road game for Cardinal.

Northern Iowa is 6-0 with OT win at SF Austin and 19-point wins last two games, vs Va Tech/Northwetsern; Panthers play slow, shoot 56.2% inside atc, 38% outside it; they're experienced group. Richmond runs lot of Princeton stuff; they're 0-2 on road, losing at Old Dominion by 6, at NC State by 12. This figures to be a low-scoring game.

First true road game for 3-3 USC, which turns ball over 22.7% of time, makes just 29.3% of 3's, 61% from line. Trojans' best win was by hoop over #179 Drexel. New Mexico PG Neal is out for month; they scored less than 70 points in last four games. Lobos are turning ball over 21.4% of time, which figures to go up with coach's son on the shelf.

Michigan State is 5-1, losing by 10 to Duke on neutral floor, Spartans do not have top 100 win yet; #114 Marquette is their best win. State turns ball over 21.4% of time, makes just 63.9% on foul line but has hit 43% of its 3's. Kansas is 4-1, losing by 32 to Kentucky on neutral floor; they're rebounding 41.7% of own missed shots. Jayhawks finished semi-final won over Tennessee on 20-5 run after game was 62-all.

Tennessee has whole new team with new coach; they're 2-2, with losses to VCU/Kansas on neutral floor, but they were 62-all with Kansas late in last game, before losing by 15. Vols are athletic but aren't shooting it well yet. Marquette is 3-3 with loss to Omaha and 62-57 win over NJIT, not impressive; their best win was by hoop over Ga Tech Thursday.

Georgia Tech is 4-1 with home win over Georgia; Tech is grabbing 45.2% of its missed shots, are also #12 on defensive boards, but mare shooting 27.6% from arc, 59.1% from line. Rhode Island turns ball over 23.6% of time; they beat Nebraska in OT at home, lost to Kansas by 16. Hard to tell whats going to happen in consolation bracket of these tournaments.

San Diego outscored Western Michigan 23-13 on foul line in 77-70 win at home six days ago; Anderson had 12 assists, 7 turnovers. Toreros were 18-27 inside arc in game- they're 4-2, allowing 82-81 points in wins, 70 or less in losses. Broncos allowed 71+ points in four of last five games; they're forcing turnovers 24.7% of time, but thats about it on defense.

Xavier beat Long Beach 97-74 at home Nov 18, making 13-31 from arc, shooting 63% inside it; Musketeers scored 82+ points in all five wins, 73 in only loss, to UTEP Friday. 3-4 49ers won every other game vs #11 schedule; they're turning ball over 24.1% of time, but making 39.7% from arc. 49ers were up nine in semifinals but faded down stretch, lost by 10.

Washington outscored Long Beach 35-16 in last 12:21 to advance to final here; Huskies are 5-0 but 49ers are best team they've beaten. Washington likes to play fast, doubt UTEP will let them. Miners are 4-0 with three wins by six or less points and coach who was an NBA head coach. UTEP has good size, decent experience and is making 39% from arc.

Iona plays #6 pace, Arkansas #11; whats total here? Gaels lost by 13 at Wofford, then won games at Wake Forest/North Texas, so they've been around already this month. Gaels are making 45.1% from arc, won't shy away from Arkansas pressure. Hogs force turnovers 25.7% of time, are 5-0 with win at SMU and 30-point home win over Wake Forest.

Portland State is 4-0 with wins at USC/Northridge; Vikings don't take lot of 3's, but make 47.8% of them; they're #5 in country in experience, #2 at protecting ball. Oregon scored 63 ppg in losses to Michigan/VCU earlier this week in Brooklyn; new-look Ducks won first three road games by 42-17-10 points. This is a bigger game for Big Sky's Vikings.
