NHL roundup: Penguins' Dupuis has blood clot

Pittsburgh Penguins forward Pascal Dupuis has been diagnosed with a blood clot in his lung and will be out of the lineup for at least six months while undergoing treatment with blood thinners.

The clot was identified during testing Monday after Dupuis had complained of discomfort in his chest.

Dupuis, 35, previously was diagnosed with a blood clot in January 2014, shortly after he suffered torn ligaments in his knee. He was on blood thinners for six months while also recovering from surgery and rehabilitating his knee. He was cleared to return to the lineup in October and had six goals and 11 points in 16 games this season. He scored two goals in a 2-1 win against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Nov. 14.

---Chicago Blackhawks rookie defenseman Trevor van Riemsdyk is expected to miss three to four months after he suffered a left patellar fracture.

Van Riemsdyk was hit during the first period against a game against the Dallas Stars. He limped off the ice and did not return. He was placed on injured reserve Monday.

Van Riemsdyk, 23, has one assist in 18 games with the Blackhawks.

---The Boston Bruins announced Wednesday that defenseman Adam McQuaid will miss six to eight weeks with a broken thumb.

McQuaid sustained the injury during Tuesday night's 2-0 win over the St. Louis Blues.

McQuaid has played in all 20 games this season, with one goal, one assist, a plus-2 rating and 19 penalty minutes.

---The Columbus Blue Jackets assigned center Michael Chaput to Springfield of the American Hockey League on Wednesday.

Chaput, 22, has two assists with eight penalty minutes and averaged 10:51 of ice time while playing in all 18 games this season with the Blue Jackets.

---The Detroit Red Wings recalled defenseman Xavier Ouellet from Grand Rapids of the American Hockey League and placed defenseman Brendan Smith on seven-day injured reserve Tuesday.

Ouellet was leading Grand Rapids in points with five in 13 games. He made his NHL debut with the Red Wings last October and played in four regular-season games and in Game 5 during the first round of the playoffs against the Boston Bruins.

Smith had two assists in the Red Wings' 5-0 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets on Tuesday night but developed a hand infection after a fight with Columbus' Nick Foligno in the third period. He was placed on medication to avoid additional infection.

Preview: Islanders (12-6) at Penguins (13-3)

Date: November 21, 2014 7:00 PM EDT

Not only did Pascal Dupuis produce on the ice, his veteran leadership also had a big impact for Pittsburgh beyond the playing surface.

While losing him for the rest of the season - and possibly longer - will no doubt have its effect on the Penguins, they've been in similar situations before.

Pittsburgh needs to refocus quickly as it begins a home-and-home set against the surging New York Islanders on Friday night.

Dupuis had six goals and five assists for first-place Pittsburgh (13-3-1) in the midst of a successful return after tearing his ACL and MCL in December.

On Monday, one day before the Penguins won 4-0 at Montreal, the 35-year-old stayed in Pittsburgh for tests after experiencing chest pains. Doctors then discovered a blood clot in Dupuis' lungs, ending his season and putting his career in jeopardy.

"It's not a great situation to be in, but that's the card that I've been dealt," the married father of four said. "Hockey is definitely second on my mind right now."

While his presence on the ice certainly will be missed, his teammates are equally saddened by the void left in other situations.

"(The locker room is) where you really miss him," forward Chris Kunitz said. "The guy on the plane and hanging out at dinners ... that's the friendship part of what Duper brings to the team."

This isn't the first time the Penguins have had to overcome adversity in the form of a serious health situation with a teammate.

Goaltender Tomas Vokoun was diagnosed with a blood clot in September 2013 and missed all of last season, and defenseman Kris Letang suffered a stroke in January.

Defenseman Olli Maatta had a cancerous tumor surgically removed from his neck two weeks ago and missed six games before returning against the Canadiens.

"With things that we've been through in the past, we're kind of experienced dealing with things as a team," said Sidney Crosby, who missed chunks of time from 2010-12 with concussions. "You hate to see anybody go through that, but (especially) a teammate and someone I've gotten to know over the years."

The Penguins, winners of three straight, will have to contain their emotions as they prepare to face an Islanders team nipping at their heels in the Metropolitan Division.

New York (12-6-0) has won 12 of its first 18 for the first time since starting 13-4-1 in 1987-88 after beating Tampa Bay 5-2 on Tuesday. It allowed the first goal for the third straight contest, but it improved to 5-1-0 when giving up the initial score.

"We're showing that we can play with the top teams in this league," coach Jack Capuano said. "Our guys are working hard and stepping up."

Brock Nelson had a goal and an assist, tying him with John Tavares and Kyle Okposo for the team lead with 18 points.

"We're doing many good things on the ice as a group," Tavares said.

New York led after the first period in the first meeting with the Penguins on Oct. 18 but fell 3-1, its fourth straight defeat in the series. The Islanders host the Penguins on Saturday night to complete the set.

"You treat these back-to-back series like a playoff series," Pittsburgh coach Mike Johnston said. "You prepare for a team, play a game, then react to how you played and what you need to do that next day. It gives us a chance to simulate playoff action."

Johnston said Marc-Andre Fleury and backup Thomas Greiss each would start against the Islanders, but didn't specify which game. Fleury will have a chance to become the 31st goaltender in NHL history with 300 victories when he makes his next start.

New York also is expected to start both Jaroslav Halak and backup Chad Johnson. Halak has won five straight starts with a 1.37 goals-against average and two shutouts.

Preview: Bruins (12-8) at Blue Jackets (6-11)

Date: November 21, 2014 7:00 PM EDT

The Boston Bruins are due for a big offensive night, even if they're content winning the way they have in the last two games.

That outburst could come Friday night in a visit to the Columbus Blue Jackets, one of the worst defensive teams in hockey, as Boston goes for a seventh straight win in the series.

The Bruins (12-8-0) are also trying to win for an eighth time in 10 games, though they've scored six goals in their last four.

They've limited opponents to 21 goals in the last nine despite a sloppy stretch last week of 11 goals allowed in consecutive losses. The other seven games have been more of what the Bruins have come to expect of themselves defensively in recent seasons with at most two goals allowed

Tuesday's 2-0 win over St. Louis was the latest, and it came despite being outshot 33-17.

That was to an extent by design after building a two-goal lead entering the third and working to keep the Blues' shots coming from the outside to make things relatively easy on Tuukka Rask.

"For the most part we kept things tight and played a good game," said Rask, who was coming off another 33-save effort in Saturday's 2-1 win over Carolina. "Whenever we play defense like that and keep them on the outside for the most part, it makes my job easier and I expect to make those saves. That was my job."

It was Rask's first shutout after leading the NHL a season ago with seven. Something of a slow start for the reigning Vezina Trophy winner has given way to a 6-1-0 stretch this month with a 1.86 goals-against average. He's also won four straight starts against the Blue Jackets (6-11-1) with a 1.14 GAA.

Maintaining defensive consistency could become tougher after the Bruins learned Wednesday they'll be without Adam McQuaid for six to eight weeks with a broken thumb suffered against the Blues.

They could also be without fellow defenseman Dougie Hamilton, who has missed practice time this week with the flu. Forward Brad Marchand remains day to day with an undisclosed ailment after missing Tuesday's game.

With Marchand out, Patrice Bergeron scored for a second straight game. The center has four goals and five assists in eight games this month.

Milan Lucic has been limited to one goal on the Bruins' 7-2-0 run, but he has four goals and three assists in his last four games against Columbus.

The Bruins have won the last six meetings with the Blue Jackets, including a three-game sweep a season ago with four goals allowed. Boston is 5-1-2 all time in Columbus.

The Blue Jackets had shown signs of life with consecutive wins over the weekend following a nine-game losing streak, then promptly regressed in Tuesday's 5-0 home loss to Detroit.

They're allowing an Eastern Conference-worst 3.56 goals per game, including an average of 4.33 while losing five of six at home. Three goals came in the final 20 minutes against the Red Wings, which has been a consistent problem with 40.6 percent of the goals they've conceded coming in the third.

"Sometimes you are playing from behind and that can be part of it, but there've been games where it's been 2-2 going into the third period, like Dallas and Ottawa twice," coach Todd Richards told the team's official website. "It's not just games where we're trailing. ... It's just us not managing the third period."

Sergei Bobrovsky has a 3.62 GAA in his last five starts and is 0-2-1 with a 2.24 GAA against Boston.

Preview: Devils (8-9) at Oilers (6-11)

Date: November 21, 2014 9:30 PM EDT

A persistent lack of offense has returned the New Jersey Devils to their losing ways in the past two games. A matchup with the defensively challenged Edmonton Oilers might be a good opportunity for them to start putting an end to the problem.

The Devils look to avoid a third straight loss and second in a row on their four-game Canadian trip when they face the Oilers on Friday night.

New Jersey (8-9-2) has totaled 14 goals in its last eight games. The Devils followed up a four-game skid Nov. 4-10 by winning their next two, but scored three in dropping the two after that. They opened their trip with a 3-1 loss to Winnipeg on Tuesday

Patrik Elias cut the deficit to 2-1 early in the third, but the Jets held a 34-22 shot advantage - 23-9 in the first two periods - as New Jersey was outshot for a fourth straight game.

The Devils are averaging 2.42 goals and 26.3 shots, both among the lowest marks in the NHL, and they've scored four goals in the past three contests.

"We had like a couple of waves in the second and a couple in the third, but over the course of the game, I would think they felt pretty comfortable and not threatened, and that's not a good thing," forward Mike Cammalleri said.

"I didn't think we created enough clean plays maybe coming up the ice out of our zone to get our legs going enough to push their wave of defense back. That made it hard for us to have puck time there."

Cory Schneider tied the Devils record with his 19th consecutive start and made 31 saves. He can break Martin Brodeur's mark set in 2001-02 on Friday.

Schneider is 5-2-0 with a 1.82 goals-against average in nine career games - seven starts - against Edmonton, dating to his time with Vancouver.

The Oilers' losing streak reached four with a 5-4 home loss to the Canucks on Wednesday. Edmonton tied it twice after falling behind 2-0, the second time early in the third period, but allowed Yannick Weber's winner midway through the final 20 minutes.

The Oilers looked as if they had tied it once more with 10 seconds left, but the goal was waved off when it was ruled that David Perron had kicked the puck off the goaltender's blocker into the net.

Steven Pinizzotto, Teddy Purcell, Boyd Gordon and Andrew Ference scored, while Ben Scrivens made 26 stops for Edmonton, which held a 32-31 shot advantage, including 13-6 in the third.

"We've been inconsistent and we haven't been able to find a way to push the game the other way," Gordon said. "Until we do that, we are going to have a tough time winning games."

At 6-11-2, Edmonton's 14 points are the fewest in the Western Conference. It's gone 2-7-1 in its past 10 contests.

Defense has been the biggest issues for the Oilers, who are giving up 3.37 goals per game - among the worst marks in the league.

"The guys who have to be critical for us right through our lineup, the forwards and some of our D, they weren't there," coach Dallas Eakins said. "They showed sparks of coming, but for whatever reason they couldn't get it done. The guys we rely on less played well."

New Jersey has gone 3-0-1 in the past four meetings, though the Oilers took the most recent matchup in Edmonton 5-4 in a shootout Oct. 7, 2013.

NHL roundup: Stars extend Spezza for four years

The Dallas Stars signed center Jason Spezza to a four-year contract extension Friday.

Terms were not disclosed, but TSN reported the deal is worth $30 million.

Spezza, 31, has posted 18 points (four goals, 14 assists) in 20 games during his first season with the Stars. His 14 assists are tied for ninth in the league and first on the team.

On Nov. 8 against San Jose, Spezza appeared in his 700th game and recorded his 700th point. He became just the second player to do that, joining Ilya Kovalchuk, who was selected first overall in Spezza's 2001 draft class.

In 706 regular season games, Spezza has posted 705 points (255 goals, 450 assists).

"Jason is a world-class player and his commitment to the organization is a reflection of what we are building in Dallas," general manager Jim Nill said in a statement. "The professionalism and production he brings to our group is key for our success moving forward and we value the leadership he brings to our team."

Prior to joining the Stars, the forward spent 11 seasons with the Ottawa Senators, where he departed the organization ranking sixth all-time in games played (686) and was second in goals (251), assists (436) and points (687).

---The San Jose Sharks acquired defenseman Brenden Dillon from the Dallas Stars in exchange for defenseman Jason Demers and a third-round selection in the 2016 NHL draft.

Dillon, 24, had one assist and 26 penalty minutes in 20 games with the Stars this season. He had 26 points (nine goals, 17 assists) and 174 penalty minutes in 149 games since signing with Dallas in 2011.

Demers, 26, tallied three assists in 20 games for San Jose this season. The six-year veteran had played in 300 games with San Jose since being drafted in the seventh round in 2008.

---The Chicago Blackhawks placed forward Patrick Sharp on long-term injured reserve.

Sharp suffered a right leg injury against the Montreal Canadiens on Nov. 6. He has three goals and six assists in 13 games with Chicago this season. The Thunder Bay, Ontario, native led the Blackhawks with 78 points (34 goals, 44 assists) last season.

The Blackhawks also recalled forward Phillip Danault from the Rockford IceHogs of the American Hockey League.

---The Toronto Maple Leafs loaned forward David Booth to the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League for conditioning purposes.

Booth, 29, has not played in a regular-season game with the Maple Leafs so far this season. The Michigan native suffered a broken foot after blocking a shot during a preseason game against the Buffalo Sabres on Sept. 28.

Booth has registered 218 points (113 goals, 105 assists) in 443 NHL games.

Booth was expected to join the Marlies for their game on the road Friday night against Hamilton.

---The Vancouver Canucks recalled defenseman Frank Corrado from Utica of the American Hockey League.

Corrado, 21, has appeared in 11 games for Utica this season, recording two goals, one assist and 13 penalty minutes.

Corrado appeared in 15 games for the Canucks last season, collecting one goal. He played in 59 games for Utica, tallying 17 points (six goals, 11 assists) and 46 penalty minutes.

---The Los Angeles Kings received salary cap relief from the NHL to help them through the indefinite suspension of defenseman Slava Voynov.

Voynov was charged with felony spousal abuse and arrested on Oct. 20. He is scheduled for a Dec. 1 appearance with the Los Angeles County district attorney's office.

The Kings were unable to recall players from the minors to replace anyone who was injured because of salary-cap constrictions.

With Voynov's $4.167 million salary no longer counting against the Kings' salary cap, they will now have the flexibility to fill roster spots.

---The Buffalo Sabres' game against the New York Rangers, postponed Friday night because of the severe weather conditions in Buffalo this week, was rescheduled for Feb. 20 at 7 p.m. in the First Niagara Center.

To accommodate the scheduling change, the NHL announced that the Sabres' game scheduled for Feb. 20 against the Ottawa Senators was moved to Dec. 15.

The Sabres' next regularly scheduled game is Saturday night in Washington against the Capitals
