Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

College basketball conferences #19-24, according to kenpom.com

24) Big South- Coastal Carolina/High Point are tied for first.

23) Southern-- Mercer-Wofford-Chattanooga all have one loss.

22) Patriot-- Colgate is in first; they're 8-12 overall. Not a good league.

21) Summit-- North Dakota State/Oral Roberts are tied at the top.

20) OVC-- Murray State-Eastern Illinois is Thursday; battle of unbeatens.

19) MAAC-- Wide-open league; Iona-Rider-Monmouth tied for first.

**********

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.......

13) Radio talk shows are funny; the Packers blew a lead Sunday, so now every move they made during the game becomes the one that cost them the game. They should've done this, they should've done that. Every "Joe from Queens" knows better than the guy who makes $5M a year to coach the team. Amazing.

12) Tom Selleck turns 70 years old next week. I read this Sunday night and it jarred me; I instantly felt older. He did an episode of Magnum PI called "Forty", all about hitting middle age. Hard to believe that was thirty years ago.

11) Milwaukee traded pitcher Yovani Gallardo to Texas, fueling speculation they are going to sign free agent James Shields.

10) Kansas 85, Oklahoma 78-- Jayhawks led by 19 at half, Oklahoma went ahead late in game, but couldn't finish the job. Really good game. Oklahoma is one of those teams that could lose in the first round of the NCAAs but they could win a title, too.

9) 49ers are paying new coach Jim Tomsula $3.5M a year, less than four coaches in the Big 14, where Jim Harbaugh ($5M a year) now works. Niners are a top 5 team in revenue, but Tomsula is the 3rd-lowest paid head coach- this makes sense how?

8) Some of these nitwit owners might've read Moneyball; Billy Beane isn't a big believer in managers being paid huge money, he sees them more as middle managers. In the NFL though thats just not true at all. 49ers will learn that the hard way.

7) Clippers are 28-14; Knicks are 6-36. Mike Woodson is an assistant coach in LA now, after being run out of NY last year. Think he is happier now?

6) Max Scherzer's $210M contract will be paid out over 14 years, even though it is only a seven-year contract. Washington is a prohibitive favorite in the NL East.

5) Forgot to mention this, but over the weekend, South Dakota lost by 14 at South Dakota State as an 8-point underdog, but only before they took a 20-0 lead!!! How many times does a team fall behind 20-0, then rally to win by double figures?

4) I screwed up a stat yesterday about #1 seeds making the Super Bowl. Here is the right stuff: this is the third time in the last six years that both #1 seeds made it to the Super Bowl. Before the Saints-Colts Super Bowl, it had been 16 years since both #1's got to the Super Bowl.

3) Bleachers in Wrigley Field will be closed in April; ones in right field might not be open until Memorial Day, as they refurbish the ballpark. Going to be strange to see games in April with no fans in the outfield.

2) Lou Amundson started for the Knicks Monday; he is on his 10th NBA team in nine seasons. Amundson and Drew Gooden are the two active players who have both been on ten different teams. The record is 12 teams; Amundson has a shot.

1) Four different players have played for 12 NBA teams: Tony Massenberg, Chuckie Brown, Joe Smith and Jim Jackson. Smith and Jackson were high draft picks.

See spot. See spot bet: This week's best spot bet opportunities

Letdown spot

The UTEP Miners are in a tight race in the C-USA, one of three teams at 4-1 in conference play and just behind 5-0 Louisiana Tech and Western Kentucky in the standings. The Miners have a trying stretch of schedule that has them on the road for three straight contests, taking care of business in the first stop of this road run with a 73-55 win at Texas-San Antonio Saturday.

The big test of this span comes Thursday when UTEP takes on the Hilltoppers in Bowling Green, Kentucky – a game that could propel the Miners to the top of the conference. However, they only have a day off from that high-pressure matchup before visiting Marshall Saturday. The Thundering Herd, at 4-14 on the year, will be catching a ton of points at home and may catch UTEP in a bad letdown at the end of an extended road trip.

Lookahead spot

Hosting your respective league’s All-Star showcase is always a good time, but for those players on the host team it can be a busy break when the majority of the league is putting its feet up. The Columbus Blue Jackets welcome the hockey world to Nationwide Arena this weekend for the NHL All-Star Game but not before wrapping up a road trip north of the border.

The Blue Jackets are in Winnipeg Wednesday night, capping a three-game road run versus the Jets after wins in Montreal and Boston in the first two stops. Columbus has three skaters in the All-Star Game and the rest of team will likely be planning for family visits and events during the All-Star festivities – steering focus away from Winnipeg. The Jets are hungry and in the playoff hunt, winning their most recent meeting with the Jackets 4-2 in Columbus on Nov. 25.

Schedule spot

The Oklahoma City Thunder have a hard enough home slate, with the nightly grind in the Western Conference what it is. Now, the Thunder hit the highway to take on some of the top teams in the East, picking up with the Miami Heat Tuesday night – the second stop on a five-game road trek that has OKC playing five games in eight days.

Oklahoma City opened the trip with a one-sided win in Orlando and follows the Miami game with a gauntlet of Eastern Conference contenders. The Thunder are in Washington Wednesday, at Atlanta Friday, and finish this stretch of sked with a stop in Cleveland to play LeBron and the surging Cavaliers Sunday. OKC did cover in Orlando Sunday but is just 6-14-1 ATS on the road this season.

Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

-- NBA games in Manhattan/Brooklyn were postponed Monday night because of the blizzard in that area. One game will be made up in March, one in April.

-- Washington Huskies dismissed center Robert Upshaw for off-court reasons; he was the #1 shot blocker in America.

-- Alex Rodriguez cashes a $6M bonus when he hits six more home runs; not at all surprising that his slimy employers don't want to pay it, since they can't cash in on it because ARod used PEDs. Pay the man!!!!

-- Iowa State 89, Texas 86-- Longhorns made 10-14 behind arc in second half to make this a much closer game than it was most of way.

-- North Carolina 93, Syracuse 83-- Orangemen used their subs a total of 23:00, got no points, two rebounds from them. How do they not have more depth?

-- Reds signed C Devin Mesoraco to a 4-year, $28M extension. Good catchers are hard to find and are in great demand.

Leafs posting ugly numbers after All-Star break

Late season collapses have become the norm for the Toronto Maple Leafs in recent years, a trend that give their fans and backers plenty of reason to be concerned as the regular season begins to draw to a close.

Since the 2011-12 campaign, the Leafs are an NHL-worst 16-32-7 straight-up after the All-Star/Olympic break. The Buds have hit the mid-season wall sooner than usual this year and are currently sitting in 11th place in the Eastern Conference with a 22-23-3 record.

Toronto will return to the ice Wednesday when they travel to the Garden State for a date with the New Jersey Devils.

Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

-- Bulls 113, Warriors 111 OT-- Golden State's 19-game home winning streak comes to an end.

-- Xavier 66, Georgetown 53-- Musketeers get first Big East road win; Hoyas made four baskets (4-16) in first half. At home.

-- VCU 72, George Washington 48-- Battle for first in A-14 wasn't close.

-- Florida 52, Alabama 50-- Gators scored 17 points in 2nd half of ugly game.

-- Boise State 72, Colorado State 78-- Rams were up 10 at half, got hosed late.

-- UNLV 67, Nevada 62-- Rebels get first Mountain West road win.

**********

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.........

13) Just heard an ESPN commercial with Chris Berman narrating and it dawned on me: I never, ever watch ESPN's pregame show, because I can't stand Berman. His act has grown very tired for me. I'd much rather watch the NFL Network pregame stuff.

12) NBA 3-point shooting contest could be tremendous February 14 in Brooklyn; Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, Kyle Korver, JJ Redick. Excellent competition.

11) If you put Pete Rose's being eligibile for the Hall of Fame up to a public vote, how much of the vote does Rose get? 60%? 70%? More? No way would he lose.

10) James Shields/Chris Young appear to be the best two starting pitchers who are still free agents. Spring training starts in three weeks; no one wants Shields?

9) Bill Vinovich is the Super Bowl ref; Patriots won four of last five times Vinovich reffed one of their games, Seattle is 7-1 last eight times he worked with them.

8) Another sign I watch too much TV: I have a tremendous urge to play cards with Kenny Rogers, thanks to that Geico commercial.

7) Bob Huggins coached Kansas State for one season, eight years ago; counting that year, K-State is 89-55 in conference games since then. In the five years before Huggins came to the Little Apple, K-State was 28-52. Frank Martin stayed in Manhattan after Huggins went to West Virginia. K-State is not an easy place to win at

6) Bill Haas won the Humana Challenge, jumped from 41st to 23rd in World Golf Ranking. Steve Wheatcroft had a top 10, jumped from #501 to #289.

5) Interesting article in LA Times this week about how some mid-major college hoop teams supplement their coach's income by giving him a percentage of the money they take in for playing non-conference guarantee games.

Long Beach State plays the hardest non-conference schedule in America; their coach Don Monson makes $800,000 a year, $280,000 of which comes from the $380,000 Long Beach took in from playing (losing) five guarantee games this fall.

Its a creative way of keeping a coach you like from bolting for more $$$ elsewhere.

4) Why do TV networks put reporters outside during horrible weather? A woman named Snow was outside in a pile of snow reporting Tuesday morning- it just doesn't seem smart. If the wind is 60 mph, I don't need to see some poor soul outside with a microphone trying like hell not to get blown off his/her feet.

3) Speaking of weather, while I froze my butt off shoveling snow Tuesday, it was 61 degrees in Billings, Montana. Go figure.

2) They opened the first White Castle (little square burgers) in Las Vegas, across the Strip from the Mirage. People were lined up down the sidewalk. I've only had them once, a long time ago; need some intel if they're worth having.

1) Marcus Mariota's brother predictably committed to play football at Oregon, but the young man is a defensive end, not a QB.

PITTSBURGH -- David Perron and Brandon Sutter scored power-play goals just under 2 1/2 minutes apart in the third period as the Pittsburgh Penguins rallied for a 5-3 victory over the Winnipeg Jets on Tuesday night.

Perron tied the game at 3-3 with 15:37 remaining when he scored his sixth goal in nine games for the since being acquired from the Edmonton Oilers in a trade. The left winger had just five goals in 38 games with the Oilers.

With 12:08 left, Sutter put the Penguins ahead with 10th goal. The center scored 13 seconds after Jets left winger Adam Lowry was sent off for charging right winger Steve Downie, who was forced to leave the game.

Downie and center Nick Spaling also scored for the Penguins, who snapped their four-game losing streak and beat the Jets for the sixth straight time and the 21st time in the past 24 meetings.

Blue Jackets 4, Capitals 3

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Left winger Cam Atkinson snapped a personal 17-game scoring drought with a third-period goal that sent Columbus to a win over Washington.

Center Ryan Johansen, center Mark Letestu and defenseman Fedor Tyutin each added goals for the Blue Jackets, while left winger Nick Foligno had two assists.

Blue Jackets goaltender Curtis McElhinney, who will be the club's starter now that Sergei Bobrovsky is out long-term with a groin injury, made 25 saves. Two of the goals he allowed were on close-range deflections.

Islanders 4, Rangers 1

UNIONDALE, N.Y. -- New York Islanders goalie Jaroslav Halak came within 8.1 seconds of his second consecutive shutout of the New York Rangers.

Islanders center Mikhail Grabovski, left winger Matt Martin, center Ryan Strome and center John Tavares scored a goal apiece.

Hurricanes 4, Lightning 2

Flyers goaltender Steve Mason returned from missing time due to the flu and made 22 saves after Ray Emery allowed two goals on the first four shots during the opening 5:50. Mason stopped shots by defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson and center Antoine Vermette in the shootout.

Simmonds began the comeback with a power-play goal midway through the first period and then helped the Flyers improve to 2-5 in shootouts on a nifty move. Center R.J. Umberger and defenseman Michael Del Zotto also scored for the Flyers, who won their second straight and third in fourth games.

SUNRISE, Fla. -- Detroit scored four goals in the second period and chased Florida goaltender Roberto Luongo en route to a high-scoring win.

Fresh off a start in Sunday's All-Star game in Columbus, Luongo gave up five goals on 17 shots before being pulled with 7:37 left in the second period. Al Montoya finished the game for the Panthers, who didn't get the win but snapped a long power-play scoring drought with three power-play goals. The Red Wings had the league's sixth-best penalty-killing unit going into the game.

Canadiens 3, Stars 2

MONTREAL -- Right winger Brendan Gallagher's power-play goal stood as the game-winner as Montreal topped Dallas.

Defenseman Alexei Emelin and left winger Alex Galchenyuk also scored for the Canadiens, who extended their winning streak to three games.

Rookie center Josh Jooris netted the winner, his fourth of the season, just past the nine-minute mark of the period when he pounced on a loose puck. His 10th goal of the season gave the Flames a 2-1 lead.

Right winger Joe Colborne, who had a two-point night, and rookie sensation left winger Johnny Gaudreau potted his second of the game to round out the scoring. Buffalo right winger Chris Steward and Gaudreau scored first-period power-play goals.

Wild 2, Oilers 1

EDMONTON, Alberta -- Minnesota was so concerned about the teams ahead of it in the standings that it almost got mugged by a team miles behind.

The Wild (21-20-6) needed a gift late in the third period to break open a 1-1 tie and post a nail-biting decision over the 29th place Edmonton Oilers.

Charlie Coyle jumped on a terrible turnover by Oilers winger Jordan Eberle at the Minnesota blueline and delivered the winner with a highlight reel goal on the ensuing play to help the Wild avert disaster.

Ducks 4, Canucks 0

VANCOUVER, British Columbia -- Center Rickard Rakell scored a goal and added an assist while goaltender Frederik Andersen stopped 17 shots for the shutout as Anaheim beat Vancouver to extend its NHL winning streak to six games.

The shutout was the third of the season for Andersen.

Right winger Kyle Palmieri, on a power play, and left winger Matt Beleskey also scored for the Ducks, who have won nine of their last 11 games. Left winger Patrick Maroon scored into an empty net in the last minute.

Anaheim leads the NHL with a 32-10-6 record for 70 points. The Ducks are also 11-1-2 in their 14 games against Vancouver.
