Shea Weber quickly making his presence felt in Montreal
October 19, 2016

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) Shea Weber didn't have to turn far to get the lowdown on Montreal upon learning he had been traded to the Canadiens.

Standing immediately next to Weber was good friend and former Canadiens defenseman Josh Gorges, who was staring at his phone in disbelief. The two had just finished a boating excursion with their sons in Kelowna, British Columbia, and left their phones in the car when the blockbuster trade that sent P.K. Subban to Nashville was completed on June 29.

''We parked the boat and grabbed our phones and both were blown up by calls and messages,'' recalled Gorges, who now plays for the Sabres. ''It was kind of comical, to be honest with you.''

Once the shock wore off, Gorges told Weber what to expect in making the switch from relative anonymity in Music City to Montreal, one of the NHL's most passionate hockey markets.

''You'll be under the microscope,'' Gorges said. ''People are going to know everything that's going on.''

Gorges also knew that if anyone could handle the added attention, it was Weber, an 11-year NHL veteran and six-year captain of the Predators.

''He kind of just makes people around him follow him,'' Gorges said. ''He's got this intimidating presence to him where if you aren't going as hard as he is, you better watch out.''

Though both are elite NHL defensemen in their own regard, Weber and Subban are polar opposites in personality and styles of play.

The Predators gave up toughness but got younger by adding a 27-year-old play-maker.

For Montreal, the trade made sense for a variety of reasons.

Subban was the Canadiens' most popular player and highly regarded for his charitable work, but his defensive lapses and outgoing personality didn't exactly fit coach Michel Therrien's blue-collar philosophy or preferred leadership style.

The 31-year Weber is a big-bodied player who is sound defensively and adds offense with a blistering shot. Just as important is Weber's no-nonsense approach.

''He's got some maturity, he's got some experience. He's a true leader,'' Therrien said of Weber. ''And we've got some young kids who are going to learn to become pros because this guy is all business.''

That wasn't always the case with Subban, who drew attention to himself through his on-ice celebrations or off-ice run-ins with celebrity.

Weber, by comparison, is an introvert. Shortly before Montreal's season-opening 4-1 win at Buffalo last week, Weber wasn't yet ready to assess the differences between Montreal and Nashville.

''I've only been here a couple of weeks so it's tough to tell,'' Weber said. ''I'm going to prepare the same way I have over my career and try to be the same player and the same guy they brought me in here to be.''

Captain Max Pacioretty has already noticed a difference.

''I've seen it from the second he walked into the locker room. He has a presence,'' Pacioretty said. ''Every team is looking to improve their locker room and making sure they have the right guys off the ice. Ours is just magnified because of the market we play in.''

POPULAR PREDATOR

Subban is already making a splash in Nashville, where he will be featured in a Bridgestone Tire national ad campaign. On Sunday, Subban turns his attention to the NFL as the ''Honorary 12th Titan'' for Tennessee's home game against the Indianapolis Colts.

CATCHING UP WITH CARPENTER

With his three kids now out of high school, former NHL star Bobby Carpenter is considering a return to coaching.

Though nothing's firm, Carpenter expects to start at the American Hockey League ranks to re-familiarize himself with the job. Carpenter had 320 goals and 728 points in 1,178 career games over 21 NHL seasons split over six teams, including his final six in New Jersey, where he won a Stanley Cup in 1995. After retiring in 1999, he won two more Cups as a Devils assistant coach.

Carpenter was in Buffalo recently to watch his daughter, Alexandra, make her National Women's Hockey League debut with the Boston Pride.

At Boston College, Alexandra Carpenter was college hockey's top player in 2014-15, and she was a member of the U.S. team that won a silver medal at the Sochi Games. She already has four goals and five points in five games for the Pride.

''This is entertaining,'' Carpenter said of the second-year league during Boston's eventual 4-1 win over the Buffalo Beauts.

Before the game, Beauts defenseman Harrison Browne announced he identified as a male in becoming the league's first transgender player.

''I don't have any problems with any of that at all. It just makes everything more interesting,'' Carpenter said of Browne. ''It's such an open world.''

BEHIND THE MASK

Washington Capitals goalie Braden Holtby raised more than $20,000 for charity in auctioning off his Team Canada World Cup of Hockey mask, the National Hockey League Players' Association announced. The money will go toward two of Canadian rocker Gord Downie's charitable foundations. Downie, The Tragically Hip frontman, is being treated for a brain tumor.

MILESTONE WATCH

Blackhawks forward Marian Hossa scored his 500th goal and 1,093th point in his 1,240th career game in a 7-4 win over Philadelphia on Tuesday night.

GAME OF THE WEEK

The San Jose Sharks travel to Pittsburgh on Thursday in a rematch of last season's Stanley Cup Final, which the Penguins won in six games.

Bergeron to return for Bruins' home opener
October 19, 2016

BOSTON (AP) The Boston Bruins won twice and lost once during their season-opening trip despite missing center Patrice Bergeron because of a lower-body injury.

When they host the New Jersey Devils at TD Garden in their home opener Thursday night, the Bruins are expected to have their scoring leader back.

Bergeron, an alternate captain and a three-time 30-goal scorer, practiced with the Bruins on Wednesday at Warrior Ice Arena for the first time since he suffered the injury near the end of practice Oct. 12. There's a strong possibility he will be back in the lineup against the Devils.

''Of course. I want to be (back) as fast as possible,'' Bergeron said. ''That's the talk I've had all week with (the medical staff). But at the same time you have to respect their opinion that they're the ones that are putting the team and my interest in front and making sure we're all taking care of that. So we'll see what happens. Obviously I'd like to be on the ice, but ... hopefully I feel good tonight and tomorrow morning and we can go from there.''

Bergeron said he felt fine after going through the entire practice and not being limited in his activities. He wouldn't get more specific about his injury and would only say, ''It was in practice. I just hurt myself.''

Bruins coach Claude Julien expects to have Bergeron in the lineup.

''Unless I'm told otherwise today or tomorrow when he comes in and feels any different, I think we're hoping he's going to be in the lineup,'' Julien said.

The Bruins made do without Bergeron by moving David Backes from right wing to center between Bergeron's expected linemates Brad Marchand and David Pastrnak. The line of Backes, Marchand and Pastrnak combined for 16 points in the Bruins' three games. Bergeron is expected to get his old spot back with Backes moving to another line.

The Bruins, who start a three-game homestand against the Devils, were 17-8-6 last season and their home struggles contributed to their missing the Stanley Cup playoffs for a second straight season. Coming off a relatively successful road trip, Boston knows it needs to exercise some home dominance to prove it's an improved team.

''We all know we've still got to improve as a hockey club,'' Julien said. ''And there's areas where we need to be better. But the fact that we were able to get through this road trip with a bunch of new players, the first road trip, and come out of there with a winning record is a good thing. So we've got to follow it up with this short home stretch here and hopefully we can build on that.''

Having Bergeron back should help the Bruins' attempt to keep improving.

Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

Some football trends to consider for Week 7………

— Chicago is 7-17-1 vs spread in last 25 NFC North games.

— Falcons covered seven of their last nine games.

— Patriots are 5-13 vs spread in last 18 games as a road favorite.

— Houston is 10-4-1 vs spread in its last fifteen games.

— Oakland covered its last six road games.

— Seattle is 10-5 vs spread in last fifteen NFC West games.

**********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: NFL’s top 10 and bottom 3……

32) Browns— Jimmy Haslam owns the Browns; apparently his brother Bill is the governor of Tennessee. Wonder if they bet on last week’s game with the Titans and if so, did the governor give his brother seven points?

31) 49ers— San Francisco has allowed 42 pts/game in losing all three road games- they’ve been outscored 54-17 in second half of their last two games.

30) Jets— Geno Smith gets the nod under center for Gang Green this week; not sure why they have four QB’s, two who have never played in the NFL, but they do. Short week this week for their game with the Ravens.

10) Steelers— Ready to drop them out of top 10 until Big Ben returns, but there isn’t anyone better to put ahead of them this week. Landry Jones has started two NFL games but didn’t last long in the one Steelers won.

9) Raiders— Why are they getting points in Jacksonville this week? They’re 3-0 on the road.

8) Bills— So much for trying to have balance on offense. Rex Ryan wanted them to run the ball more, so he fired the OC and told the new guy to run it more, which they have, and very well.

7) Redskins— Jay Gruden was a head coach for 162 games in the Arena League and UFL before he got his chance in the NFL— he’s a really good coach who paid his dues.

6) Broncos— Not sold on either of their QBs, but their defense is really good and they’re still the defending champs.

5) Seahawks— They’ve slipped some but with 14 rookies and a veteran core, expect them to play better as the season rolls along.

4) Cowboys— Why would you replace Dak Prescott? Dallas won their last five games, they won easily at Green Bay, Cowboys have it rolling. Don’t mess with a winning streak.

3) Falcons— Was just as impressed with them in their loss in Seattle as I was by their wins. Atlanta gained 269 yards IN THE THIRD QUARTER at Seattle last week.

2) Patriots— Wonder if Microsoft stock will take a hit now that Belichick has disowned the tablets teams use on the sideline.

1) Vikings— Sam Bradford went thru training camp with the Eagles, now he goes back to Philly in Week 7 as the starting QB of the hottest team in the league.

PITTSBURGH (AP) Evgeni Malkin, Scott Wilson and Patric Hornqvist scored during a furious third-period rally to lead the Pittsburgh Penguins to 3-2 victory over the San Jose Sharks on Thursday night.

The Penguins trailed by two goals after two largely lifeless periods in a rematch of last June's Stanley Cup Final before catching fire late. Hornqvist and Malkin both finished with a goal and an assist. Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 32 shots and bought the Penguins time until the offense finally got going.

Tomas Hertl and Patrick Marleau scored for the Sharks, who controlled the first 40 minutes and appeared well on their way to a one-sided victory before falling apart late. Martin Jones made 17 saves but saw the play in front of him break down in the third.

DUCKS 3, FLYERS 2

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Ryan Garbutt's goal broke a tie in the third period and sent the Ducks to their first win of the season, over the Flyers.

The Ducks opened 0-3-1 and had failed to score more than two goals in any of those games. Chris Wagner and Corey Perry also scored to help the Ducks spoil Philadelphia's home opener.

Korbinian Holzer's angled pass from behind the net led to Garbutt's one-timer that stunned Steve Mason for the winner.

Wayne Simmonds and Matt Read scored for the Flyers. The Flyers have lost all three games since winning on opening night and dropped to 27-16-6 lifetime in home openers.

John Gibson stopped 20 shots for the Ducks.

BRUINS 2, DEVILS 1

BOSTON (AP) - Patrice Bergeron scored the tiebreaking goal with 75 seconds left in his season debut to give the Bruins a victory over the Devils.

After missing the first three games with an unspecified injury, Bergeron returned to practice on Wednesday and took regular shifts in the home opener against New Jersey. He was on the ice when linemate Brad Marchand tied it 1-all with just under 10 minutes left in regulation, and he was there again to slide in the game-winner at the end.

Tuukka Rask had 28 saves for the Bruins, who fought off a power play for the last 50 seconds without allowing a shot.

Kyle Palmieri scored for the Devils, and Cory Schneider stopped 34 shots.

CAPITALS 4, PANTHERS 2

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) - Alex Ovechkin scored the game-winning goal midway through the third period to lift the Capitals over the Panthers.

Marcus Johansson, Evgeny Kuznetsov and Justin Williams scored goals for the Capitals. Matt Niskanen recorded two assists and Braden Holtby made 26 saves.

Jaromir Jagr became the third player to score 750 goals. He is in third place all-time in the NHL, behind only Wayne Gretzky (894) and Gordie Howe (801). Michael Matheson also scored for the Panthers.

Roberto Luongo made 25 stops.

Ovechkin put the Capitals ahead 3-2 with 12:27 left in the third. His one-timer from the point got past Luongo, who was screened on the play.

Johannson stretched the lead to 4-2 with an unassisted goal with 1:20 left.

CANADIENS 5, COYOTES 2

MONTREAL (AP) - Carey Price made 27 saves in his season debut to help the Canadiens beat the Coyotes.

Price made his first NHL start since injuring his right knee on Nov. 25, 2015. He also missed the first three games of this season because of the flu. Alexei Emelin, Torrey Mitchell, Shea Weber, Alex Galchenyuk and Artturi Lehkonen scored for Montreal (3-0-1).

Jakob Chychrun and Laurent Dauphin scored for the Coyotes.

Playing for the injured Coyotes starter Mike Smith, backup Louis Domingue allowed four goals on 19 shots before being pulled in the second period. Justin Peters stopped 23 of 24 shots in relief. Arizona dropped to 1-2-0.

AVALANCHE 4, LIGHTNING 0

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Matt Duchene had two goals and an assist, Semyon Varlamov made 27 saves for his 21st career shutout and the Avalanche beat the Lightning.

Andreas Martinsen and Carl Soderberg scored for the Avalanche, who are 2-1 on a four-game trip. Colorado beat Pittsburgh in overtime and lost to Washington earlier on the trip.

Duchene scored in the final minute of both the first and second periods. Varlamov made a strong save on Nikita Kucherov's low right circle shot in the second.

Tampa Bay went 3-1 on a season-opening four-game homestand.

WILD 3, MAPLE LEAFS 2

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - Eric Staal scored twice and the Wild recovered from another deficit to beat the Maple Leafs.

Staal has three goals in his first four games with his new team, and his game-winner with 8 minutes left kept Minnesota unbeaten in its three-game homestand despite allowing the first goal in each game.

Zac Dalpe scored his first for the Wild, and Devan Dubnyk stopped 31 shots.

Toronto let another third-period advantage slip away as No. 1 overall draft pick Auston Matthews continued his scorching rookie season with his fifth goal in four games. The Maple Leafs surrendered a four-goal lead in a 5-4 overtime loss a night earlier at Winnipeg.

Roman Polak also scored for Toronto. Making his first debut for the Leafs, goaltender Jhonas Enroth made 24 saves.

KINGS 4, STARS 3, OT

DALLAS (AP) - Alec Martinez scored 1:20 into overtime and the Kings beat the Stars.

Martinez's wrist shot from the slot went past a screen by Tanner Pearson to beat Stars goalie Kari Lehtonen.

The Kings had lost their first three games. Dallas fell to 2-1-1.

Dallas' Jason Spezza tied the game at 3 with 2:07 left in regulation with a shot from the left faceoff circle that beat Kings goalie Peter Budaj.

Los Angeles' Nic Dowd scored the game's first goal, the first of his eight-game NHL career, on the power play in the first period.

OILERS 3, BLUES 1

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) - Connor McDavid had a goal and an assist as the Oilers won their second straight game in a strong start to the season, defeating the Blues.

Tyler Pitlick and Milan Lucic also scored for the Oilers, who improved to 4-1-0 on the season.

Nail Yakupov replied for the Blues (3-1-1) in his return to Edmonton since he was traded to St. Louis earlier this month.

There was no scoring in the first period, with the Blues getting 10 shots on Oilers goalie Cam Talbot and Edmonton directing eight shots on Jake Allen in the St. Louis net.

The Blues got on the board 3:37 into the second as a scramble allowed Joel Edmundson to feed it in front to Yakupov. It was the second goal of the season for the former Oiler.

HURRICANES 4, FLAMES 2

CALGARY, Alberta (AP) - Victor Rask scored his third goal of the season to lead the Hurricanes to a win over the Flames.

Rask's power-play goal with 3:48 left in the first period made it 2-0 as the Hurricanes built up a lead and never gave it up to pick up their first win of the season. Rask, who played two years of junior hockey with the WHL's Calgary Hitmen, leads the team with five points.

Teuvo Teravainen, Viktor Stalberg and Jeff Skinner also scored for Carolina, playing its fourth straight road game to start the season. Noah Hanifin had a career-high three assists.

It was the Hurricanes' first win at the Saddledome in eight tries, dating back to Dec. 12, 2002.

Troy Brouwer and Johnny Gaudreau scored for Calgary.

Friday’s six-pack

—In its last four games, Stanford has been outscored 57-6 in the first half.

— Texas lost its last four games at Kansas State, last three by 18+ points.

— Mississippi State won its last seven games (5-1-1 vs spread) with Kentucky.

— In the last six seasons, counting playoffs, Lebron James has played 21,665 minutes; no one else has played more than 20,000.

— Packers 26, Bears 10– Chicago’s only TD was its first defensive TD in its last 35 games.

—Virginia Tech 37, Miami 16– Three straight losses for the ‘canes.

Friday’s Den: 13 things I’m looking for this weekend

13) Rams-Giants at 9:30am ET Sunday from London. I love pro football but am not fond of being awake at 9:30am, under any circumstance. My question is this: if LA were to lose this game, would Jared Goff start the Rams’ next game, after their bye week?

12) Oregon Ducks lost their last four games, giving up 70 points in their last game, at Washington. Ducks play in Berkeley tonight; how many points will Cal score?

11) Sam Bradford returns to Philly Sunday as QB of the 5-0 Vikings; interesting situation. If Teddy Bridgewater hadn’t have gotten hurt this summer, Bradford would be starting this game for the Eagles.

10) TCU-West Virginia will be a fun game from Morgantown. Horned Frogs won by one point in each of their last two visits to West Virginia.

9) New Orleans Saints allowed 72 points in their last two games, but won both of them. They’re getting points in Kansas City Sunday.

8) Wisconsin played its heart out last week in a tough home loss to Ohio State; now they go to Iowa City to face a Hawkeyes’ squad that has lost three straight home games to the Badgers.

7) Washington won its last two games, Detroit won its last two. Lions seem to play a nail-biter every week. This is an interesting game in the NFC playoff race.

6) Texas lost its last four visits to Kansas State, but K-State’s QB got hurt last week. Longhorns have a bad defense; can the Wildcats’ backup QB put points up against it?

5) Oakland Raiders covered their last six road games; they’re getting a point or so this week in Jacksonville. If the Raiders are a playoff contender, they win this game.

4) Michigan State lost its last four games, but is a road favorite this week at Maryland; you’d have to take a huge leap of faith to invest in them until they actually win a game.

3) Geno Smith gets the nod at quarterback for the Jets, which should appease their fanbase a little bit, at least for the first quarter. I’d like to see them give Bryce Petty a shot.

2) Seattle-Arizona is usually a fun game. Will be a good time for me to order a pizza, sit back and see if the Cardinals can tighten up the NFC West race at all.

1) Ed Orgeron used to be the head coach at Ole Miss; now he is the interim coach at LSU and Ole Miss is bringing a really good offense to Baton Rouge. Leonard Fournette is expected back for the Tigers this week. This will be an interesting 9:00 game. 9:00 at night!!!!

Preview: Blackhawks (2-2) at Blue Jackets (0-2)
Date: October 21, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

Both the Columbus Blue Jackets and the Chicago Blackhawks are doing the blue-line shuffle to end the week, with lineup changes almost certain.

The winless Blue Jackets (0-2-0) hope to break that streak as they host the Blackhawks (2-2-0) on Friday night at Nationwide Arena, with defenseman Ryan Murray drawing back into the lineup. Chicago, looking to extend its winning streak after dropping the first two games of the season, will have defensemen Brian Campbell and Michal Rozsival taking a seat.

After six days without playing a game, the Blue Jackets are itching to drop the puck in search of that elusive first win.

"It's a big game for us," Blue Jackets coach John Tortorella said via the team website. "We've been sitting on 0-2 for a week here. It sucks. We need to have a good start and feel good about ourselves."

The team's best period the early season also happened to be the last one against the San Jose Sharks, establishing a stout forecheck and scoring twice before ultimately losing 3-2 at home.

Murray was reunited with Seth Jones on the top defensive-pairing in Thursday's practice, with rookie Zach Werenski dropping down to the second-pairing with David Savard. Rounding-out the final pair was Jack Johnson and Markus Nutivaara.

Tortorella had a simple answer when asked about the change.

"I didn't like how the pairs played in the last game," he said.

He's also cognizant of not overworking Werenski after just two NHL games. In the absence of Murray against the Sharks, the 19-year old logged significant ice time (22:53) with one goal and four shots over 27 shifts, while playing primarily with Jones.

"We have to be careful with (Werenski)," Tortorella said. "He's still a young man."

Over the last five seasons with the Florida Panthers, Brian Campbell never missed a regular-season game. It appears that he'll be sitting for Friday's game, joining Michal Rozsival, who hasn't played in any of the first four games. Campbell's offseason acquisition was heralded as what was missing on a defense that struggled last season.

Trevor van Riemsdyk had a poor game on opening night against the St. Louis Blues, recording 0-0-0, with zero shots and 4 PIM. He rode the pine for the next three games.

"We don't want the same two guys sitting out all the time," Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville said to the Chicago Sun-Times. "Sometimes you don't want to tinker with a winning lineup, and sometimes... you've got to get them in there to play. That's what we're visiting."

Van Riemsdyk played in all 82 games last season for the Blackhawks, but finds himself fighting for ice time on a blue-line crowded with eight defensemen.

Columbus announced Thursday that defenseman Cody Goloubef (oblique injury) was placed on waivers, so that he could be assigned to the team's AHL Cleveland Monsters, ostensibly to get him playing time coming off the injury. If he clears at noon on Friday, he'll report to Cleveland.

For Chicago, its injury situation is a touch longer than the Blue Jackets.

Marian Hossa, having scored his 500th goal in Tuesday's win over the Philadelphia Flyers, suffered a lower-body injury after blocking a shot in the latter stages of the game. He's considered day-to-day and is questionable for Friday's game in Columbus and Saturday's game against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Rookie forward Ryan Hartman, having missed the last two games with a lower-body injury, could return to the lineup Friday.

The two starting goalies for Friday's game are expected to be Sergei Bobrovsky for Columbus and Corey Crawford for Chicago.

Preview: Predators (1-2) at Red Wings (2-2)
Date: October 21, 2016 7:30 PM EDT

DETROIT -- The Detroit Red Wings and Nashville Predators are coming off wins, but neither team is particularly happy about the way it is playing.

Detroit hosts Nashville at Joe Louis Arena in a 7:30 game Friday.

The Red Wings (2-2-0) have won two in a row, but only defeated the New York Rangers 2-1 at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday night because of a spectacular performance in goal by backup goalie Jimmy Howard, who was making his first appearance of the season. Howard made 32 saves, including at least four breakaways.

"We can't play like this if we want to win," Detroit captain and left winger Henrik Zetterberg said after Wednesday night's game. "We're happy that we got the two points, but we've got a lot of work to do."

The Predators (1-2-0) lost 2-1, to the Dallas Stars on Tuesday night at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville.

Nashville has scored seven goals this season and only two have come at even strength. Five have come on the power play.

"... I'm always pretty honest. First game I thought was good, and in second game I liked the way we played," Predators coach Peter Laviolette said about his team's even-strength play. "I didn't like the result and tonight I hated the way we played."

Predators goalie Pekka Rinne was also spectacular Tuesday against Dallas, making 35 saves.

"He was outstanding. It could've been all over in the first. He was outstanding," Laviolette said.

The Red Wings have also been careless with the puck.

"The more correctable thing is turnovers," Detroit coach Jeff Blashill said. "We got to learn to be a team that plays north for 60 minutes, that gets pucks in behind, that attacks, doesn't turn the puck over in the D-zone, doesn't turn the puck over in the neutral zone. We've probably turned the puck over in the neutral zone more this year than last. We've probably got out of our zone a little bit better, but we've turned the puck over in the neutral zone, too."

Left winger Drew Miller's goal 59 seconds into the third period Wednesday broke a 1-1 tie for Detroit.

"Sometimes it's not pretty on the road, but I think the message after the game is we weren't good enough," Miller said. "We have a lot of things that we could have done better, not giving them as much speed. They're a team that plays really fast and they've got some guys that can fly, but we've got to be better in slowing them down."

Defenseman Mike Green and left winger Thomas Vanek lead the Red Wings in goals and points with three goals and six points each.

Green got his first career hat trick in Monday night's 5-1 win against the Ottawa Senators in the home opener at Joe Louis Arena. Vanek, who signed a one-year $2.6 million free agent contract with the Red Wings on July 1, got his third goal Wednesday night.

Preview: Coyotes (1-2) at Islanders (1-3)
Date: October 21, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

NEW YORK -- The New York Islanders hope their second game this week against a struggling team playing the tail end of a back-to-back goes better than the first.

The Islanders continue a five-game homestand Friday night when they host the Arizona Coyotes at Barclays Center. While New York (1-3-0) is playing on two days' rest following a 3-2 loss to the San Jose Sharks on Tuesday, the Coyotes (1-2-0) will be playing a night after absorbing a 5-2 loss to the Canadiens in Montreal.

With the Islanders game in mind, Coyotes coach Dave Tippett pulled goalie Louis Domingue after he gave up four goals in the first two periods. Domingue, who is Arizona's No. 1 goalie in place of the injured Mike Smith, will start again on Friday.

"To change momentum for us and recognize we have to play tomorrow night again," Tippett said in explaining his decision. "We'll put Louie back in there tomorrow night and see if we get a better start from him."

The Coyotes, who will be playing the third game of a season-high, six-game road trip, have allowed 12 goals in losing their past two games and 15 goals in three games overall. Arizona is one of nine NHL teams to give up at least 15 goals thus far but the only one that has played fewer than four games.

"There's areas of our game that still have to (be cleaned) up," Tippett said. "Some of the execution is not what it needs to be. For us, we need all the parts to work for us to be real competitive."

The Coyotes will be the second consecutive reeling Pacific Division team to head into Barclays Center. The Islanders' loss to the Sharks came a night after San Jose absorbed a 7-4 loss to the New York Rangers.

New York looked like the flatter team Tuesday, when it had just four shots in the first period and six shots in the third period.

"It's a 60-minute game, there's a surge both ways, but at the end of the day, you've got to be consistent putting pucks on net," Islanders coach Jack Capuano said. "Because when you put pucks on net, you're going to retrieve those pucks and you're going to get extended zone time."

The Islanders have scored just nine goals this season, the second fewest among teams that have played more than three games.

"We've played a lot of games here at the start, obviously, not the results we've wanted for the most part," Islanders center and captain John Tavares said. "We've just got to get off to a little better start on Friday."

Islanders No. 1 goalie Jaroslav Halak is likely to draw the start against Domingue. If they square off, it will be a rematch of the last time the Islanders faced the Coyotes on Dec. 19, when Domingue earned his first career shutout by stopping all 25 shots he faced in Arizona's 1-0 victory at Gila River Arena.

The shutout came in Domingue's only career appearance against the Islanders. Halak is 6-3-1 with a 1.91 goals against average in 10 career appearances against the Coyotes.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) Rookie defenseman Zach Werenski had a goal and an assist, and teammates Nick Foligno and William Karlsson picked up their first goals of the season as Columbus beat Chicago 3-2 on Friday night.

Columbus' Sergei Bobrovsky blocked 32 shots as the Blue Jackets picked up their first win of the season, avoiding a repeat of last season's disastrous 0-8 start.

Tyler Motte and Richard Panik scored for Chicago (2-3-0), and Corey Crawford had 25 saves.

The Blue Jackets (1-2-0) took the lead when the 19-year-old Werenski netted a wrist shot from the point during a power play at 9:10 in the first period. It was his team-leading second goal of the season.

ISLANDERS 3, COYOTES 2

NEW YORK (AP) - Johnny Boychuk's short-handed goal early in the third period lifted New York to the victory.

Dennis Seidenberg and Ryan Strome also scored for New York, and Jaroslav Halak stopped 23 shots in the Islanders' second win in three home games after opening with two road losses.

Brad Richardson and Radim Vrbata scored 13 seconds apart in the first period to tie the score for the Coyotes. Louis Domingue had 28 saves as Phoenix lost its third straight on the road after one home win.

The game marked the first NHL meeting between the Strome brothers. Dylan Strome, 19, was the third overall pick by the Coyotes in the 2015 draft and made his debut earlier this week. Ryan Strome, 23, was the fifth overall pick in the Islanders in the 2011 draft.

RED WINGS 5, PREDATORS 3

DETROIT (AP) - Gustav Nyquist had a goal and an assist for Detroit.

Justin Abdelkader, Drew Miller, Tomas Tatar and Darren Helm also scored as Detroit won its third straight. Petr Mrazek stopped 30 shots.

P.K. Subban, Mike Ribeiro and Mike Fisher scored for Nashville, which has lost three straight. Pekka Rinne finished with 38 saves.

Fisher's power-play goal with 4:46 left pulled the Predators within 4-3. It was Fisher's third goal, all on the power play.

Helm had an empty-net power-play score with 22 seconds left, his fourth goal of the season, to seal the win.

Preview: Rangers (2-2) at Capitals (3-0)
Date: October 22, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

WASHINGTON -- Even as they were rolling to 120 points and the Presidents' Trophy last season, the Washington Capitals had stretches where they started games slowly, falling behind early before rallying.

This season they're starting strong and finishing strong.

Washington (3-0-1) scored first in each of its four games and has yet to allow a third period goal. The Capitals overcame a sluggish second period and scored twice in the third for a 4-2 win at Florida on Thursday to earn their third straight victory.

"I think in the first we said, "let's do it the right way,'" coach Barry Trotz said. "'Let's get on their defense.' That's the way you have to do it in this league, you have to put some pressure on their back end."

Washington will try to continue its strong play on Saturday, when it hosts a New York Rangers team that started very fast in its last game.

The Rangers scored 69 seconds in and outshot Detroit 33-18, but Jimmy Howard was perfect the rest of the way -- including stopping three breakaways -- as the Red Wings rallied for a 2-1 win on Wednesday night.

New York (2-2) scored 15 goals in its first four games, led by Chris Kreider's three goals and four assists. Mika Zibanejad owns two goals and three assists.

"I like our process. I like the way we're playing," Rangers coach Alain Vigneault said Wednesday. "We're not giving up much to the opposition and we're definitely generating some Grade A opportunities."

New York's offensive task won't get any easier Saturday night against Vezina Trophy winner Braden Holtby and a Washington defense that's allowed six goals in four games.

"They're a good team with a lot of skill and it's going to be a good test for us," New York's Jimmy Vesey told Madison Square Garden network. "Their forward group is extremely skilled and Holtby's one of the best goaltenders in the league."

The Rangers have had some success against the Washington goalie. For his career, Holtby is 6-8-1 with a 2.69 goals-against average versus New York.

In 44 games against the Rangers, Alex Ovechkin, who has two goals this season including the go-ahead tally Thursday night, has 27 goals and 15 assists. Justin Williams has 28 points in 35 games against New York and Nicklas Backstrom has 23 assists in 35 games.

Williams picked up his first goal of the season against the Panthers and the first for the Capitals' third line, which also includes newcomers Lars Eller and Zach Stanford.

"We've gotten better marginally every game we've played," Williams said. "We're talking a little bit more, we're supporting a little bit more, we're getting to know each other a little bit more."

Saturday's game marks Washington's fourth in five contests against teams -- including New York -- that notched at least 100 points last season.

"I think we usually, in terms of last year I guess, play better against good teams it seems," Holtby said. "There's a lot of depth in the Eastern Conference this year. There's a lot of good teams."

Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist is 19-9-4, with a 2.65 goals against versus the Capitals, while Rick Nash has 10 goals and 12 assists in 22 games.

Washington was 3-2 against the Rangers last season, including an overtime win.
