Preview: Penguins (35-13) at Blue Jackets (36-15)
Date: February 17, 2017 7:00 PM EDT

The Columbus Blue Jackets have been a sluggish team in recent weeks. Their next opponent should grab their undivided attention.

Looking to win back-to-back games for the first time in nearly a month, the Blue Jackets take on Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins on Friday night in another matchup involving two of the top teams in the Metropolitan Division.

Columbus (36-15-5) and Pittsburgh (36-13-7) have split two games this season, however, the Blue Jackets have outscored the Penguins 10-5.

"It's easy to get up to play those guys. ... It's our biggest rival. It's going to be a big two points, especially how close we are in the standings this year, so it makes it that much more special," Blue Jackets forward Matt Calvert said Thursday.

Pittsburgh begins play in second place in the Metropolitan, five points behind the Washington Capitals and two points ahead of Columbus. The Penguins are 1-2-2 in their last five games at Nationwide Arena, including a 7-1 setback on Dec. 22.

Columbus has split the first four games of its season-high seven-game homestand after defeating the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-2 on Wednesday. That again has the Blue Jackets in position to win two straight for the first time since recording one-goal victories over the Carolina Hurricanes and Ottawa Senators on Jan. 21 and 22, respectively.

Though Columbus has gone just 4-5-1 since then, coach John Tortorella likes the effort his team is putting forth recently.

"I think that's three (games), three of them in a row, where we're certainly not perfect but I think we're attached to the game as far as playing harder. Some guys that I thought were struggling in the effort part I think have picked that up," Tortorella said.

"I think what the guys have done is they've recommitted themselves to just taking it one day at a time, and just keep on working themselves through a very tough part of the year, a grinding part of the year, and just trying to take it one day at a time."

Columbus' rout of Pittsburgh in December was fueled by a hat trick from Scott Hartnell. But Hartnell missed Wednesday's win with a lower-body injury and remains day-to-day according to Tortorella.

Even if Hartnell is unable to go, the Jackets may not miss him. Nine other players have recorded at least two points versus Pittsburgh this season.

After being given a game off, Sergei Bobrovsky should be back in goal for Columbus.

Since last winning consecutive starts on Jan. 8 against the Philadelphia Flyers and Jan. 17 versus Carolina, Bobrovsky is 3-6-1 with a 2.97 goals-against average and a .901 save percentage.

Upon joining the Blue Jackets in 2013, though, Bobrovsky is 4-1-0 with a 2.16 GAA, against Pittsburgh at home, stopping 143 of 154 shots.

Pittsburgh faces a quick turnaround after defeating the Winnipeg Jets 4-3 in overtime on Thursday in a milestone game for Crosby.

The 29-year-old Penguins captain recorded his 1,000th career point with a first-period assist, and then assisted on Phil Kessel's game-tying goal with just over six minutes to play before scoring the game-winning goal -- his NHL-leading 31st -- with 22 seconds to play.

Crosby became the 86th player in NHL history and third this season to reach 1,000 career points along with Alex Ovechkin and Henrik Sedin.

"It's nice to win the game," Crosby told the Penguins' official website. "When you have a memorable night like this, you want to finish the right way."

Ten players -- including Crosby -- have each managed one point versus the Jackets in 2016-17.

Besides dealing with Crosby, Columbus' defense may have its hands full as Evgeni Malkin and Kessel are surging for Pittsburgh.

Malkin had a goal and an assist Thursday, giving him 58 points (24 goals, 34 assists) to match his total from last season. Malkin has recorded multiple points in four of his last five games, totaling three goals and five assists. He also needs one assist for 500 in his career.

Kessel will be trying to score a goal in five straight games for the first time since a career-best six-game run from Nov. 26 to Dec. 8, 2008, while with the Boston Bruins. Kessel is the Penguins' top scorer against the Blue Jackets this season with three points (two goals, assist).

Malkin was held scoreless in December's win over Columbus, and missed a 4-3 overtime victory on Feb. 3 due to a lower-body injury the sidelined him for seven games.

Pittsburgh is just 12-10-4 on the road, but has shown improvement recently by going 4-1-1 in its last six away from home, limiting the opposition to one goal in each of the four victories.

It's not immediately known if the Penguins will have Justin Schultz and Olli Maatta available after both players left in the second period with injuries on Thursday.

Schultz is the Penguins' top-scoring defensemen with a career-best 39 points (nine goals, 30 assists). Maatta has a goal and six assists with a plus-17 rating in 54 games.

The teams will meet for the final time in the regular season on April 4 in Pittsburgh.

Preview: Avalanche (15-37) at Hurricanes (24-22)
Date: February 17, 2017 7:30 PM EDT

RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Carolina Hurricanes are counting on their time off providing a lift as they return to action Friday night to begin a five-game homestand.

The opponent at PNC Arena will be the Colorado Avalanche, the worst team in the NHL.

"When you take five days off, you're going to sink a little in the standings," Carolina coach Bill Peters said. "Now you have to make sure you win on a consistent basis. ... We're going to make up some games in hand. You have to play good."

The Hurricanes (24-22-7) were off this week, so a layoff since Saturday's loss in Dallas has been time to recoup and gear up for what must be a strong final two months if they're going to break through and make the Eastern Conference playoffs.

"When we skate and are good on the forecheck, we're at our best," Peters said. "There's definitely some challenges. I believe in the group."

The Hurricanes have work to do after a recent rough stretch despite picking up six of a possible 10 points in the five-game span prior to the five-day layoff.

"We're trying to get some consistent (play)," Peters said.

The Avalanche (15-38-2) suffered their fifth consecutive loss with Thursday night's 2-0 setback at Buffalo.

"Just being in games isn't what we're looking for," Colorado forward Matt Duchene said. "We're looking to win games. There's things we have to do better."

Avalanche coach Jared Bednar said he tried to mix up the team's routine at times in order to break out of the slump. Much of what's being emphasized is of a learning nature, but that doesn't mean the outcome of games hasn't taken a toll.

"We can't worry about the last few games now," Bednar said.

The matchup in Raleigh pits two teams occupying last place in their respective divisions. The Hurricanes lost their last two games.

"It's a results-based business," Avalanche goalie Calvin Pickard said. "We can definitely play better so we have to find a way to win."

Friday's game wraps up a stretch of five road games in a seven-day stretch for Colorado, so the Avalanche has been considerably busier than the Hurricanes.

"We've been offensively challenged this trip," Duchene said, with the team managing a total of six goals during the five-game skid.

For Carolina, now is the time to get after it and this might be the ideal opponent coming off the idle time and in need of an immediate jump-start. Peters said he's aware some teams have had trouble coming out of similar layoffs.

"This is the start to a five-game segment," Peters said. "We have to play our best hockey of the season."

Avalanche forward Jarome Iginla posted 26 points in 25 games against the Hurricanes. Carolina center Jordan Staal has compiled 12 points in 11 career games against Colorado.

Carolina won its last six home games against the Avalanche. The teams meet again next month in Denver.

Preview: Panthers (25-20) at Ducks (30-18)
Date: February 17, 2017 10:00 PM EDT

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- The Florida Panthers will continue their quest to enhance their playoff chances at the expense of the Western Conference's contenders on Friday night against the Anaheim Ducks at the Honda Center.

The Panthers will spend most of February facing the Western Conference. They won three of their past four against the West, including a 6-5 overtime victory on Wednesday night over San Jose Sharks.

Florida enters the game in Anaheim just three points out of the Eastern Conference's final wild-card berth after winning five of six games.

Wednesday night's win was the Panthers' second in a row on a five-game trip that will take them to Los Angeles and St. Louis. Florida began the trip on Saturday in Nashville with a 7-4 victory over the Predators.

Left winger Jonathan Huberdeau will play a critical role in the Panthers' playoff hopes.

Huberdeau missed the first four months of the season with a torn Achilles tendon. But since returning to the lineup on Feb. 3, the winner of the 2013 Calder Memorial Trophy as the NHL's rookie of the year amassed three goals and four assists in accumulating at least one point in each of his four games.

Huberdeau continued his torrid performance during the road trip. After getting a goal and two assists against Nashville, he added another assist in San Jose before scoring the winning goal 1:38 into overtime.

"He has simply matured before our eyes," Dale Tallon, the team's president of hockey operations, told the Miami Herald. "He is comfortable in the position he is in, and he has grown mentally and physically. He's still a young man, but he's not the kid I had to send back because I was worried about him getting crushed."

During the Panthers' 2011 preseason camp, Tallon returned an 18-year-old Huberdeau to Saint John in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. The next season, Huberdeau won the Calder award.

Helping Huberdeau is 45-year-old right winger Jaromir Jagr, who tallied his 1,900th career point Wednesday night while playing on the same line with Huberdeau and center Aleksander Barkov. Only Hall of Famer Wayne Gretzky has more career points than Jagr's 2,857.

"He teaches us a lot of things that maybe some other guys couldn't," Huberdeau said about Jagr to the Los Angeles Times.

The Ducks, who trail the first-place Sharks by four points in the Pacific Division, could be without center Antoine Vermette for the next 10 games.

Vermette, one of the NHL's best at winning faceoffs, was suspended Thursday for slashing linesman Shandor Alphonso's legs while waiting for a faceoff in Tuesday night's 1-0 win against the Minnesota Wild. The 13-year veteran, who had never previously been suspended or fined, will appeal.

"It wasn't really a vicious or any type of malice thing," Anaheim coach Randy Carlyle told the Orange County Register. "He wasn't trying to hurt anybody. It was more of a tap to blow-the-whistle-type thing.

"Usually what happens, if they do drop the puck unfairly, the linesman or the referee will blow the whistle and reset it. But he touched the official, so what are you going to do?"

Defenseman Sami Vatanen could return against Florida. Vatanen, who missed the past five games because of a knee injury, practiced Thursday. However, Carlyle told NHL.com that he will decide Friday morning whether Vatanen will play.

Saturday’s six-pack

Six of the best minor league prospects for the Toronto Blue Jays:

1) Vladimir Guerrero Jr, 3B— He turns 18 next month. Damn good bloodlines.

3) Lourdes Gurriel, OF/3B— His brother played for the Astros last year.

9) Bo Bichette, 2B/SS— His father Dante was a pretty good big leaguer.

11) Justin Maese, P— Was 9-6, 2.36 in his first two minor league seasons.

12) Max Pentecost, C/1B— Has had two elbow operations since signing for $2.9M.

25) Cavan Biggio, 2B— Not as a good a prospect as his Hall of Famer dad.

**************************

Saturday’s List of 13: Random stuff on a winter day…….

13) Tom House was in the major leagues for 8 years, with the Braves, Red Sox, Mariners; he was 29-23, 3.79 in 289 games (21 starts, 33 saves). He was best known for catching Hank Aaron’s 715th home run in the Atlanta bullpen in 1974. Now he is best known for something else.

House is a throwing guru, as in, the mechanics of throwing a ball, whether it be a baseball or a football. He was the Rangers’ pitching coach in Texas in the 1980’s; Nolan Ryan mentioned him in his Hall of Fame acceptance speech. Nowadays, House does work with some NFL QB’s.

Drew Brees, Carson Palmer, Tom Brady have all worked with House; now Jared Goff is working with him too, on ways to strengthen the shoulder and improve throwing mechanics. He’s had an interesting career; he was also USC’s pithing coach for a few years and is a PhD. Smart guy.

12) Turns out Mark Gottfried gets $2.28M to leave NC State with four years left on his contract, so while I think he got a raw deal, he’ll be back on TV next year with a healthy bank account, so good for him. Gottfried was very good on TV before he got the Wolfpack job.

11) Michigan coach John Beilein is the only one of 351 Division I basketball coaches who has never been an assistant coach, at any level.

Beilien’s son Patrick is following the same path; he is the coach at D-II LeMoyne in Syracuse at age 33, where his father was once the coach, from 1983-1992.

10) Went to an America East game the other night; Md-Baltimore County at Albany. Coach of UMBC is Ryan Odom, son of former Wake Forest/South Carolina coach Dave Odom.

Ryan Odom has the Retrievers at 16-11, after they were 7-25 LY. He coached at Lenior-Rhyne (D-II) last year, improving them from eight wins to 20+, so he is on a fast track to a bigger league fairly soon. Two years ago, Odom was the interim coach of Charlotte in C-USA after the head coach there became ill.

9) It was 66 in Chicago Friday, the 4th-warmest Jan-Feb Chicago day in recorded history. Out in Los Angeles, they were getting 3-4 inches of rain. Odd weather. As long as i don’t have to brush snow off my satellite dish again this winter, I’ll be happy.

8) This is the last year of Joe Girardi’s career as manager in the Bronx. If you root for that team, aren’t you concerned? Girardi seems like a good manager; most of the problems they’ve had the last few years seem to be front office’s problems, as in, the roster got real old.

Fact is, they’ve won only one world title since 2000 and spent a freakin’ fortune.

7) Jerry DiPoto became the Mariners’ GM in September, 2015; only 8 of the players who were on the 40-man roster then are still there.

6) Former NBA star Cedric Ceballos now does some Mountain West games on CBS Sports Network; he isn’t bad and has a tremendous, deep voice.

5) 34-year old Vince Young may be aiming for a football comeback; rumors have him headed to the Saskatchewan Roughriders in the CFL. Young last played for the Eagles, in 2011.

4) Friday was Michael Jordan’s 54th birthday, Jim Brown’s 81st. Pretty strong day to have a birthday.

3) Portland State is 12-12 this season, 5-8 in big Sky games, 1-6 in their last seven. A closer look shows that four of their last five losses came in OT, including a triple OT loss at Eastern Washington. Vikings have an experienced team, so you’d think they’d win some of those close games.

Elsewhere in the Big Sky, Montana State is 6-2 in its last eight games- they’ve won their last four home games- their last three home wins have all come in overtime.

2) Quote of the Day, part 2: “This is not even a conspiracy theory. The Earth is flat.” Kyrie Irving of the Cavaliers— maybe he learned that in his six months at Duke. Seriously, Irving thinks the world is flat.

1— RIP William James Myers, 79, better known as George the Animal Steele, a pro wrestler who entertained fans by eating the turnbuckle with his green tongue sticking out. Trust me on this, he was fun to watch, in a creepy kind of way. RIP, sir.

Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

— Kansas, VCU are only two teams to win 24+ games in each of the last ten seasons.

— San Diego Padres signed longtime Angel pitcher Jered Weaver to a contract.

— Rims in Western Michigan’s gym are among the loosest I’ve ever seen; great rims to shoot on.

— Cal Bears are 3-21 in their last 24 visits to play rival Stanford in Palo Alto.

— Arbitration case between Dellin Betances and Bronx Bombers got ugly; Betances will be paid $3 million this season, not the $5M he wanted, but apparently things got a little personal.

— Texas Longhorns have artificial turf for baseball; only two major league teams do and they are both domed stadiums (Toronto, Tampa Bay).

**********

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a basketball Saturday……..

13) Kansas 67, Baylor 65— Jayhawks won their last four games by total of 10 points; three of those four games were on the road. Frank Mason is a great point guard for them.

12) Oregon 101, Colorado 73— If NCAA’s started right now, I’d pick the Ducks to win it all. Things change quickly with injuries and other happenings, but Oregon is really good.

11) West Virginia 83, Texas Tech 74 2OT— Wild week for the Mountaineers; they lost in OT at Kansas on Monday, then survived here, despite a 10:51 field goal drought that included the whole first overtime. The Big X is really a great league, with zero stiff teams.

10) Duke 99, Wake Forest 94— Blue Devils swept Wake this year, but wins were by combined total of seven points. Giving up 94 is a red flag for Duke; Danny Manning’s team is close to climbing into the top echelon of ACC teams.

9) Army 71, Navy 68— Cadets were down 25 points in this rivalry game.

8) Tex-Arlington 68, Georgia State 67— Big road win for the Mavericks, who stay in first place in the Sun Belt— they play (tied for) second-place Georgia Southern next.

Arlington had ball for last shot, down 67-65; they ran no play at all, the guard just dribbles all the time off the clock, cannot penetrate, is doubled and has to jack an awful 30-footer, which he swished.

7) There were several injuries to key players Saturday; not sure of the severity of them:
— Baylor: PG Manu Lecomte turned his ankle, finished the game, but he was hobbled.
— Michigan State: Elon Harris hurt his knee, left on a stretcher. It didn’t look good.
— Florida: Sixth man Canyon Barry twisted his ankle, played only 22:00. Looked like he could’ve played at the end of the game if he was needed.
— Georgia: Best player Yante Maten left very early with a leg injury; he came back and sat on the bench with a bag of ice.

6) UL-Lafayette 85, UL-Monroe 84— Game was 32-25 ULM at the half. Total was 145.5. Ragin’ Cajuns outscored ULM 60-52 in the second half, without lot of 3’s being made and I guess with almost no defense being played.

5) Ball State 109, Central Michigan 100 OT— Cardinals put seven players in double figures. Marcus Keene scored 40 points for the Chippewas.

4) Northwestern 69, Rutgers 65— Wildcats were down 4 in last 3:00 of this game, but they rallied in last few minutes and pulled a game out that would’ve been a disaster had they lost. Wildcats are now 20-7, still have some work to do to make the NCAA’s for the first time.

Doug Collins looked like he was going to have a heart attack in the stands, watching his son’s team play. Very intense.

ESPNU showed Doug Collins, Northwestern alum Mike Greenberg on camera during the game more than they showed Chris Collins. Can understand the elder Collins, but Greenberg?

3) Kentucky 82, Georgia 77— Dawgs’ best player got hurt in first 2:00, never returned, but the Georgia kids fought their hearts out for 40:00, fell just short. Kentucky made their foul shots in last minute to put this game away.

John Calipari went on a post-game rant in his press conference about coaches getting fired during a season. Good to hear a guy with leverage defend his colleagues.

2) UCLA 102, USC 70— Bruins avenge their earlier loss to the Trojans in Galen Center.

1— South Dakota State 97, Fort Wayne 89— 6-9 soph named Mike Daum scored 51 points and grabbed 15 rebounds; he was 7-18 behind the arc. He has taken 54 foul shots in his last four games, scored 34.2 pts/game in his last five. Don’t forget, Fort Wayne beat Indiana this season, so they’re not some stiff team, and the game was in Fort Wayne.

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Some college hoop knowledge…….

Some college hoop knowledge…….

With Champ Week only 7-10 days away, here is some knowledge about some of the lesser known conferences around the country……….

29) Big West— Was #13 league each of last two years, has fallen off the cliff to #29 this season. Cal-Irvine is by far the best team in league, especially if G Luke Nelson is healthy. Anteaters start three seniors; rest of their team is three sophomores and seven freshmen.

Top seed has won this conference tourney in only two of last seven years.

26) Big Sky— Should be wild weekend in Reno when they have conference tourney; Weber State, North Dakota are tied for first; Eastern Washington’s game behind. Lot of experienced teams, should be a wide-open tournament on a truly neutral floor.

Top seed won this tournament the last six years, but they hosted tourney most of those years, and the tourney was a lot smaller than it is now.

24) America East— Vermont is unbeaten in the league and will be heavy favorite to win the tournament, but Will Brown has won five conference tourneys for Albany and his Great Danes were 9-7 in league play in two of those five seasons- they’re #3 seed right now. #2 seed Stony Brook lost by 7 to Vermont at home; they play Catamounts again next weekend.

21) Ohio Valley— Belmont has 4-game lead over everyone else in league; much like Irvine in the Big West, lot of pressure on them, since they still need to win conference tourney to make it to the NCAA’s. Morehead State is 9-5 in OVC, five other teams are 8-6.

Belmont has won OVC tourney twice in their four years in the league.

20) Conference USA— Middle Tennessee State is much the best; they lead Louisiana Tech by two games, Old Dominion/UTEP by four. Three different teams won this conference tourney since powerhouse Memphis left for the AAC.

19) Horizon— Valparaiso leads Oakland by a game, but Grizzlies beat Valpo twice during the season. This could be fifth time in six years Valparaiso is #1 seed in tourney; they won it twice in previous four Horizon tourneys when they were the #1 seed.

18) MAAC— Last time the #1 seed won MAAC tourney was 2010, when 17-1 Siena won it. This year, Monmouth is clearly the best team, with a 4-game lead over St Peter’s, five over Iona and host Siena. March 2-6 should be a fun event in beautiful downtown Albany.

17) Ivy League- Their first-ever conference tournament; top four teams will meet in the historic Palestra, one of the cathedrals of college hoop. Princeton is 10-0, Harvard 8-2, Yale 6-4 and no one else is at .500 in the league. Penn/Columbia are tied for 4th, which is the last spot to get into the tournament.

16) Summit League— North Dakota State/South Dakota are tied for first; tournament is in Sioux Falls. Eight of the last nine years, the conference tourney winner finished either 1st or tied for 1st during the regular season. Denver is in 3rd place, vastly improved under Rodney Billups, their new coach. 7-7 Fort Wayne has been a disappointment after they beat Indiana in November.

15) Sun Belt— Texas-Arlington beat St Mary’s in Moraga; they’re only team besides Gonzaga to beat the Gaels. Arkansas State/Georgia Southern are game behind the Mavericks. Top-seeded team won this league the last two years, but there are several capable teams here. Tournament is at the Lakefront Arena in New Orleans, not necessarily a neutral site.

Six of the last seven years, the conference tournament final was decided by 4 or less points.

14) Mid-American— Akron is three games above anyone else in the league, but they’re 5-9 vs spread in league games— lot of close wins, and close games in March lead to upsets. Buffalo was 9-12 three weeks ago; now they’ve won six games in a row and are hottest team in the league.

Western Michigan won five of its last six games and has a really good point guard. If Akron gets upset here, almost anyone could win this tournament. Wide-open, athletic teams; fun games to watch. Tough games to handicap. A top seed won conference tournament three of last four years.

13) Southern Conference— Semi-final doubleheader in this league should be great; any of the top four teams would be a worthy champ. Top seed won this conference tournament four of the last five years. Tournament is in Asheville, NC. Chattanooga is the defending champ.

12) Colonial— They moved this tournament to Charleston for first time this season, bad news for NC-Wilmington, which leads Charleston by game in league standings. Top seed won this tourney 10 of the last 14 years, including the last three years. Towson is #3 seed, but one of their best players was shot in the leg recently and is out for the year.

Even with NHL totals hitting three-year high, Over is producing cold hard cash

“I think the biggest reason for the higher totals is that there are a lot of these young players coming into the league who are highly skilled offensive players, and they are extremely fast.”

Over the past couple of years, the NHL saw an extensive period during which one could ask: What in the H-E-double-hockey-sticks has happened to scoring?

The entirety of the 2015-16 NHL season didn’t include a single game with a total of more than 5.5. The 2014-15 season had only seven games with a total of 6 or more, the last of those coming on Dec. 29, 2014. It’s all part of a downward trajectory in NHL totals over the past dozen years.

Yet in just the past week, there were three games with totals of 6.5 – on three consecutive nights, no less. And continuing a trend in these contests, the over hit in all three: Winnipeg beat visiting Dallas 5-2 on Tuesday night, host Columbus topped Toronto 5-2 on Wednesday, and Pittsburgh notched a 4-3 overtime home victory Thursday against Winnipeg.

There have been 11 games this season with a total of 6.5, and the over has gone 8-3 in those games.

“Totals are definitely higher this season,” said Greg Sindall, senior oddsmaker for online site SportsInteraction, alluding to an additional 11 games with totals of 6, though the over trend isn’t as strong there. “I don’t know if it’s a short-term anomaly, as it’s been like this all year. Our bettors are certainly betting the over a lot, although the over is always the more popular play in most sports.”

Nick Bogdanovich, director of trading for William Hill US, certainly agrees with that assessment. Bogdanovich doesn’t pay too much attention to hockey outside of the playoffs, but said that when it comes to totals, the NHL is a lot like its more popular peers.

“The higher the total, the more they’re gonna bet the over,” he said. “All the parlays are on the over – 95 percent. That’s just the way it is. In the NBA, baseball, whatever, we always shade to the over, and we’re usually rooting for the under.”

This season’s scoring statistics bear out the need to pump up the total a little more often. The average number of goals per game is 5.56, a marked increase from the 5.42 of the 2015-16 season and the first time since the 2010-11 season (5.59) that the average has been at 5.5 or above.

Sindall said scoring was up right from the get-go this season, so his shop began raising totals about a month into play, particularly in games involving Pittsburgh, Washington, Columbus, Minnesota and the New York Rangers. The defending Stanley Cup champion Penguins lead the league, with their games averaging 6.35 total goals. The first-place Capitals have seen their games just above the league average at 5.58, with the Blue Jackets (5.67), Wild (5.66) and the Rangers (6.05) all well above the league average.

Four teams – Pittsburgh, Toronto, the Rangers and Winnipeg – have cumulative goals per game above 6.0 this year; Dallas was the only team to eclipse that mark in 2014-15 and 2015-16. But Sindall also pointed to certain players impacting betting totals, particularly some of the rising young stars across the league.

“Auston Matthews is definitely on there,” he said of the Toronto rookie, tied for sixth in the league with 27 goals. Cooley also cited Edmonton’s Connor McDavid (20 goals), Toronto’s William Nylander (16), Buffalo’s Jack Eichel (13), Washington’s Evgeny Kuznetsov (12) and Calgary’s Johnny Gaudreau (11).

Matthews and Nylander’s Maple Leafs best demonstrate the goal upswing, averaging 6.14 cumulative goals per game, second only to Pittsburgh.

“I think the biggest reason for the higher totals is that there are a lot of these young players coming into the league who are highly skilled offensive players, and they are extremely fast,” Sindall said. “These guys are making difficult plays at full speed, and it is very difficult for defenses and for goalies.

“There have been some injuries to goalies, and I think penalties are up a bit, so those could also contribute. But I would say the biggest factors are the speed and skill level of these players, and coaches are planning their games around these guys. Teams seem to be playing more of an attacking game because they have such great offensive players.”

The higher totals – and the fact that games posted at 6.5 are seeing the over cash at a high rate – is a welcomed sight for fans of more action and more scoring. Of the 1,230 games during the 2005-06 NHL season, 1,064 had a betting total of six goals or more. The precipitous drop that followed, with the aforementioned seven such games in 2014-15, represented a decrease of more than 99 percent - and there were zero games with totals above 5.5 last season.

Who knew that when Tampa Bay edged visiting Toronto 3-2 in that Dec. 29, 2014 contest, there wouldn’t be another 6 on the board until this past Oct. 22, when Dallas faced Columbus? Or that the Carolina-Washington game on Nov. 28, 2010 – yes, 2010 – would be the last total of 6.5 until the Dec. 17, 2016 clash between Pittsburgh and Toronto?

Now, there have been eight games in just the past month with a total of 6.5 – including three on the same day, Jan. 31 – and the over went 7-1 in those matchups.

“I don’t know how long it will last, but the longer the better,” Sindall said. “Games are so much better when you let these players go out there and do their thing, as opposed to sitting back in some tight defensive system, trying to win every game 2-1.”

Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

Westgate’s odds to win the college football national title next fall:

7-2— Alabama

7-1— Southern California

8-1— Florida State, Oklahoma, Ohio State

12-1— Michigan

15-1— Clemson, Louisville, LSU

20-1— Auburn, Texas

**********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but……..

13) Sacramento Kings traded star center DeMarcus Cousins and Omar Casspi to New Orleans for Buddy Hield, Tyreke Evans, Langston Galloway and future 1st and 2nd round draft picks. This trade came out on Twitter just before midnight Sunday night.

Cousins and Anthony Davis together in the New Orleans frontcourt is going to be interesting to watch. Kings needed a 1st-round draft pick because the Bulls have their #1 pick this year.

12) Cousins is really talented but seems like a walking timebomb; he already has 17 technicals this season, his frustration level is obvious as he plays for a losing team. When you pay your franchise player $200M, and that day is coming for Cousins, you have to trust him to actually be a franchise player.

11) Sacramento’s struggles aren’t all Cousins’ fault; Kings once picked Thomas Robinson immediately in the draft right before Damian Lillard was picked; that wasn’t Cousins’ fault. Kings have had substandard management for a long time. Remains to be seen whether this extends that horrendous streak.

Sacramento also drafted Jimmer Fredette over Klay Thompson, Kawhi Leonard. Yikes.

10) Speaking of Jimmer, the BYU alum is scoring around 35 a game in the Chinese pro league; he had 73 points in a game over the weekend. No word on how many points the guy he was guarding scored.

9) College of Charleston is 4-1 as a road favorite in CAA games this season; the six years before this, they were a combined a 6-21 vs spread as a road favorite.

8) During the NASCAR telecast Saturday night, the great Darrell Waltrip actually invoked the name Gladys Kravitz while talking to Dale Earnhardt Jr about something. Gladys Kravitz was the next door neighbor on the old TV show Bewitched, which was on TV in the 60’s.

I know nothing about car racing, but I enjoy listening to Darrell Waltrip.

7) During the 18 years that Steve Fisher has coached San Diego State, UNLV has had eight different basketball coaches.

6) Remember this when the Sweet 16 of the NCAA’s rolls around; since 2006, Pac-12 teams are 10-6 in regional semis/finals in the West region, 1-11 in regional semis/finals of other regions.

5) I love basketball as much as anyone, but I’ve got zero desire to watch the NBA All-Star Game; that said, don’t want the league to put up a financial stake to make it more competitive. Last thing the NBA would need is Steph Curry or Lebron James blowing his knee out trying hard to win a game that means absolutely nothing.

4) According to ESPN’s Joe Lunardi, these would be the four 8-9 seed games in the first round of the NCAA’s, if the tournament started today:

VCU-Michigan, Minnesota-Wichita State, Northwestern-Arkansas, Dayton-Miami

Winners of those games would play the #1 seeds in the second round.

3) In 2008, 3-pointers accounted for 29.1% of points scored in college hoop; this year, that figure is up to 30.4%.

2) One of the thousands of reasons why Las Vegas is great: you can wager on which QB will be selected first when the NFL Draft happens in Philly in late April.

1— There were commercials on basketball games this weekend for people to invest in the country of Belize, which looks like an island with really nice weather. I’m sure the commercials are designed to seduce nitwits like me who live in cold weather climates to give these people my money, but thats what Vegas is for. Ha!!!! (Its a joke, kind of)
