Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

-- Las Vegas native Bryce Harper was a judge for UNLV's dunk contest at their outdoor practice in downtown Vegas last night.

-- Seahawks 20, 49ers 3-- Monday night doubleheaders would be better than these Thursday night games. Football wasn't meant to be played on three days' rest.

-- Temple 24, East Carolina 14-- Owls are 7-0, play Notre Dame next week.

-- UCLA 40, Cal 24-- Bruins' kicker made 60-yard FG. Pac-12 teams are proving to be wildly erratic from week-to-week.

-- Appalachian State 31, Georgia Southern 13-- ASU is bowl eligible for first time.

-- Pelicans' G Tyreke Evans (knee) is out 6-8 weeks

**********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: For amusement only........

13) July 23, 2015-- the Mets rolled out a lineup with John Mayberry Jr batting 4th and Eric Campbell 5th. Not good. Mets were 52-50 on July 30, after blowing a 7-1 lead in a rainy home loss to San Diego. Things have gotten better since.

12) October 22, 1972-- Oakland A's won their first of three straight World Series, nipping the Reds 3-2. Pete Rose flied out to left to end the series, where six of seven games were decided by one run.

Same day, the Rams beat Cincinnati 15-14-- David Ray, who wasn't that great a kicker, won it with a 54-yard FG. Back then, straight-on kickers weren't that good- a 54-yard FG was a big deal, especially to win the game. Pretty good day for a 12-year old me.

By the way, Game 7 of the World Series back then was a 1:00 start. Not anymore.

11) Temple and Memphis are having magical football seasons, both unbeaten, but the sad reality of modern coaching is that there is a pretty good chance neither team will have its coach by the time their bowl games roll around, since the big $$$ teams generally like their new coaches in place as early as possible, to fight the upcoming recruiting battles. Signing Day for reruits is in very early February.

Hard to imagine coaches Fuente, Ruhle not moving up the coaching ladder.

10) Yoenis Cespedes plays golf almost every day? Wow. Long time ago, playing golf was taboo for baseball players. Even now, playing during the playoffs is a little odd.

9) Was thinking about it today; wouldn't basketball be a better game without any kind of timeouts, except TV timeouts? Let the players play. TV timeouts have to be, to pay for everything, but other ones could be done away with.

8) Dodgers finally put Don Mattingly and his 8-11 playoff record out of their misery Thursday, firing the skipper, who is rumored headed to Miami, where nitwit owner Jeffrey Loria can drive him nuts. You can't win with a $300M payroll, why would he be able to win managing one of baseball's most dysfunctional franchises?

7) Three basketball teams from the CAA have lost their leading returning scorer to higher-level Division I programs, as poaching continues to be a problem for mid-major basketball teams. Lousville poached Drexel's leading scorer; its a free country, but that just doesn't seem fair.

6) If I'm Johnny Cueto, a decent-but not-great free agent pitcher, I'm running back to the NL, where they don't have a DH and to a bigger ballpark than Cincinnati.

5) NFL teams who get the highest %age of their first downs on third down:
Browns 36.8%......Bears/Redskins, both 32.2%........Saints 32.1%

Teams that get the lowest %age of first downs on third down:
Cowboys 16.4%........Chiefs 16.9%........Cardinals 17.6%.

4) Florida Gators have a kicking problem; their starter has a hamstring pull, their backup is out for the year, so they held an open tryout Wednesday, for any student enrolled with 12+ credit hours this semester. Two women were among 216 students who were interested and signed up.

3) Cal Ripken is interested in the Nationals' managing opening, but apparently the team isn't interested in him, after just having had Matt Williams as manager, a former player with no managing experience. Curious to see who they hire.

2) Clippers 115, Portland 109-- NBA exhibition games don't mean much, but LA was down 35 points in this game before rallying to win. That doesn't happen a lot.

1) Doubtful that I'm getting my lazy butt out of bed at 9:30 Sunday morning to watch the Bills-Jaguars game from London on my laptop. Game is streaming on Yahoo!; I'm paying DirecTV to be able to see every game, but guess this one doesn't count.

NHL roundup: Stars dominate Pens again

PITTSBURGH -- Antti Niemi made 33 saves and the Dallas Stars dominated the Pittsburgh Penguins for the second time in 15 days, winning 4-1 Thursday night for their fifth consecutive victory.

Niemi was excellent from the start to improve to 6-1-1 in his career against the Penguins, who had won three in a row only to generate little offense against a Stars team that has scored 25 goals to Pittsburgh's 11 this season.

The Stars, off to a 6-1 start that includes four consecutive road wins, didn't get a point from either of their high-scoring forwards -- reigning NHL scoring champion Jamie Benn (10 points) or center Tyler Seguin (10 points) -- but they didn't need any.

Johnny Oduya, John Klingberg, Jason Spezza and Mattias Janmark all scored for Dallas, while Nick Bonino scored his first goal as a member of the Penguins.

Rangers 4, Coyotes 1

NEW YORK -- Kevin Hayes capitalized on a third-period gaffe by goaltender Mike Smith to help the New York Rangers clip Arizona at Madison Square Garden.

With the score tied at 1, Smith skated behind his net to play the puck. Smith's backhand pass deflected off J.T. Miller and directly to Hayes, who backhanded his second goal of the season into the vacated net less than three minutes into the period.

Keith Yandle and Rick Nash later added goals for the Rangers, who got an earlier goal from Chris Kreider. Klas Dahlbeck scored Arizona's goal.

Devils 5, Senators 4 (SO)

OTTAWA -- Lee Stempniak was the hero as New Jersey extended its winning streak to three with a shootout victory over Ottawa at Canadian Tire Centre.

Stempniak's goal in the fourth round of the shootout ended a game he prolonged by scoring off a crease-side scramble with 31.4 seconds left in regulation time set the stage for overtime.

Travis Zajac, Jordin Tootoo anf Adam Henrique also scored in regulation for New Jersey, while Mika Zibanejad, Zack Smith, Mike Hoffman and Chris Neil scored for Ottawa.

Predators 5, Ducks 1

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Ryan Ellis and Colin Wilson each collected a goal and two assists as Nashville dumped struggling Anaheim at Bridgestone Arena.

In improving to 6-1-0, the Predators broke up a scoreless tie with three second period goals, then added Mattias Ekholm's slapper at 3:03 of the third period and Wilson's power-play tally at 18:18 to cap the scoring and up their home record to 4-0-0.

Pekka Rinne turned away 27 shots, although he lost out on his 38th career shutout when Jiri Sekac potted a power-play marker for Anaheim at 12:15 of the third.

Mike Ribeiro and Eric Nystrom also scored for Nashville.

Wild 3, Blue Jackets 2

SAINT PAUL, Minn. -- Goals by Zach Parise, Thomas Vanek and Nino Niederreiter kept Minnesota undefeated at home, and Columbus winless anywhere.

Columbus fell to 0-8-0, losing its first game under new coach John Tortorella after former coach Todd Richards was fired earlier in the week.

Sergei Bobrovsky made 20 saves for the Blue Jackets, who got first period goals from Alexander Wennberg and Brandon Dubinsky.

Devan Dubnyk made 27 saves for the Wild.

Blackhawks 3, Panthers 2

CHICAGO -- Patrick Kane and Brent Seabrook each had a goal and two assists, and Chicago held on for a win over Florida.

Artem Anisimov added a goal as the Blackhawks earned their third consecutive win on home ice.

Vincent Trocheck notched a goal and an assist for Florida and Jaromir Jagr also scored. Corey Crawford stopped 16 of 18 shots to earn his 150th career victory while Roberto Luongo turned aside 24 of 27 shots for Florida.

Capitals 3, Canucks 2

VANCOUVER, British Columbia -- Alex Ovechkin kept his hot scoring streak alive with a third-period goal to give Washington a narrow win over Vancouver.

Jay Beagle had a goal and an assist for Washington and Jason Chimera also scored for the Capitals, who won their fourth straight game and fifth of six.

Henrik Sedin scored a power-play goal and an assist for the Canucks. Radim Vrbata had the Canucks other goal. Ryan Miller ended the night stopping 32 shots. Capitals goalie Braden Holtby made 23 saves.

Kings 4, Sharks 1

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- In his first game with the Kings, goaltender Jhonas Enroth led Los Angeles to a win over San Jose.

The backup to Jonathan Quick stopped 39 of 40 shots. Enroth was key as the Kings' penalty-killers went 5-for-5 to propel Los Angeles to a third straight win after the team began the season with three losses in a row. The Sharks lost their third consecutive game.

Jeff Carter scored two goals to lead the Kings' attack.

Bruins are the hottest over bet on the ice

The Boston Bruins have struggled to keep the puck out of the net in the early part of the season and because of that, they're the hottest Over bet in the NHL.

The Bruins have played six games so far this season and the over has cashed in all six. The B's have allowed 26 goals in those six games, second only the Columbus Blue Jackets' 37. In Boston's six games, there has been an average of eight goals scored per thus far.

The Bruins visit the New York Islanders Friday evening. Oddsmakers have a total of 5.5 tabbed on the game. It will be the second 5.5 total in a Bruins game this season.

Preview: Canadiens (7-0) at Sabres (1-4)

Date: October 23, 2015 7:00 PM EDT

Extending the best start in franchise history Friday night will result in the Montreal Canadiens adding to the early season woes of an Atlantic Division opponent.

The Canadiens return to the road looking for an 8-0 record as they take on the offensively challenged Buffalo Sabres.

Montreal is the only unbeaten team in the NHL and can double its previous high in wins to start a season Friday. The Canadiens last won eight in a row to close the 2005-06 season.

They've trailed once in 2015-16, for less than three minutes, and haven't scored fewer than three goals or given up more than two. Their seven goals allowed are easily the lowest total in the league.

Montreal opened the season with a four-game trip, and is beginning a stretch of four of five away from home.

"We see one game at a time," coach Michel Therrien told the team's official website. "It's like when I'm driving my car. I'm not constantly looking in the mirror to know what's going on in the back. I'm watching ahead."

One way he's doing so is by resting star goaltender Carey Price for the second time this season, with rookie Mike Condon set to start this contest. Condon made 20 saves in his NHL debut, a 3-1 win over Ottawa on Oct. 11.

Montreal's depth and strong defense has given it confidence regardless of who's in goal.

"We're rolling four lines and it feels like everyone is a big part of it," right wing Torrey Mitchell told the team's official website. "Everyone has their role."

Canadiens among the league leaders in plus/minus rating are Andrei Markov (plus-10), Max Pacioretty (nine), P.K. Subban (nine) and Tomas Plekanec (eight). Their penalty killing percentage of 91.7 ranks near the top of the league, and they haven't surrendered a first-period goal while giving up one in the third.

Montreal allowed one goal while sweeping its three-game homestand against the New York Rangers, Detroit and St. Louis.

Buffalo (2-4-0) has scored once in the opening period. The Sabres have picked up both of their victories at home and won their last three meetings with the Canadiens, but Montreal is 6-2-1 in the past nine matchups - 4-1-0 in Buffalo.

The Sabres defeated Toronto 2-1 in a shootout Wednesday, with Evander Kane tying it with 4:29 left in the third period. That snapped Buffalo's scoreless streak that covered more than 107 minutes.

"It doesn't seem like we've scored a goal in a long time," coach Dan Bylsma said. "To get the puck to pop out on Kaner's stick there and to get that goal and to have to fight for it for 55 minutes is a big one for us."

Chad Johnson picked up his second win for the Sabres by making 23 saves and limiting the Maple Leafs to one goal on five attempts in the tiebreaker. Johnson has made one start against Montreal, stopping 18 shots in a 3-1 loss to the Islanders on Dec. 23.

Preview: Bruins (2-3) at Islanders (4-1)

Date: October 23, 2015 7:30 PM EDT

Though the Boston Bruins have done their best work on the road this season, their first visit to Barclays Center may be their toughest challenge yet.

The New York Islanders return to their new home carrying a four-game winning streak into Friday night's clash between two of the NHL's highest-scoring teams.

They've scored 18 goals and averaged 33.2 shots during the run while getting a lift from Jaroslav Halak's return from an upper-body injury.

Halak made 37 saves in his second start back to lead New York (4-1-1) to a 4-0 victory at Columbus Tuesday, following up the club's first three wins at Barclays Center. The veteran goaltender now faces a Bruins team that's averaging 3.67 goals per game and has won both of its road tests during an overall uneven start.

Boston (2-3-1) remains winless at home after squandering a two-goal lead in the third period of Wednesday's 5-4 overtime loss to Philadelphia, the latest tough outing for the slumping Tuukka Rask. The 2014 Vezina Trophy winner owns a 4.40 goals-against average and an .854 save percentage while allowing at least three goals in each of his five starts.

'I wouldn't call it a struggle,' Rask said. 'But, then again, you let in five, four goals every game ... can't be pretty happy about that.'

The Bruins have overcome some of their defensive lapses with a power play that's converting at a league-best 38.1 percent. All of Patrice Bergeron's four goals have come on the man advantage, and he's totaled five points over the last two games.

David Krejci is on a hot stretch as well, tallying nine of his team-best 11 points in the last four after notching two assists Wednesday.

"We're scoring a lot of goals," defenseman Torey Krug told the Bruins' official website. "But it's our defensive foundation that we're trying to get back to, and being stingy and not giving so many scoring chances away. If we clean those areas up, we'll have some good hockey games."

The Islanders have been better on the back end of late, in part due to Halak's return. They haven't allowed a power-play goal in three straight and killed off all six chances against Columbus.

"Our goaltender is our best penalty killer, but our guys have been structured and have been doing the right things at the right times," coach Jack Capuano told the team's official website. "Faceoffs have been key for us too."

New York also is getting strong offensive contributions during its four-game surge. Captain John Tavares has three goals and five assists, Kyle Okposo has six points and Anders Lee, Brock Nelson and Nikolay Kulemin each have two goals over the streak.

Tavares recorded two goals and two assists in the Islanders' three 2014-15 meetings with Boston, which enjoyed great success during the final few years of Nassau Coliseum. The Bruins have won five of six on the road in the series and are 10-2-1 in their last 13 against New York as the visitor.

Rask is 8-3-0 with a 2.34 GAA in 12 starts against the Islanders and won both his matchups last season. Halak is 8-4-0 with a 2.04 GAA in 12 starts against Boston but permitted four goals in 5-2 home loss on Jan. 29.

Preview: Lightning (4-2) at Jets (4-2)

Date: October 23, 2015 8:00 PM EDT

The Winnipeg Jets are getting a lengthy stay at home and a break they feel will provide a benefit moving forward.

That sounds much better than the stretch the Tampa Bay Lightning are enduring.

Winnipeg looks to deal Tampa its fourth defeat in five games as the Lightning continue their road trip against Central Division foes Friday night.

The Jets (4-2-0) have been in Winnipeg since beating Calgary last Friday to begin a six-game homestand that takes them through Oct. 29. Mathieu Perreault and Drew Stafford scored Sunday, but St. Louis scored twice in the third period to win 4-2.

The four-day break is Winnipeg's longest of the season as it prepares to play a game every other day for the remainder of its homestand.

"It's huge," forward Adam Lowry told the team's official website of the layoff. "You see some breakdowns early in the season that you're not accustomed to seeing later in the year. It's important to fix those as soon as you can so those bad habits don't creep into your game. This week's huge. It gives some guys a little bit of rest before a pretty busy schedule coming up."

The Lightning (4-2-1) know a bit about that. They began a four-game trip featuring all Central opponents with Tuesday's 5-4 shootout loss to Nashville and face the Jets before a Stanley Cup Final rematch with Chicago on Saturday.

Tampa, which concludes the journey Tuesday in St. Louis, allowed the tying goal with 5:30 left in the third period before getting blanked in the shootout. Steven Stamkos, Nikita Kucherov, Ryan Callahan and Erik Condra scored.

"We deserved a point and we got it," coach Jon Cooper said. "We're moving on the road here and we keep building on what we did."

The Lightning have killed off all six penalties over their last two games, a solid turnaround after opponents scored seven times in 15 chances with the man advantage through the first five.

"What we were doing before wasn't getting it done, so we changed things up, changed a little personnel up and I think it's changed our vibe out there a little bit," Cooper said. "We've got a few more shot blockers. We're going to work different guys in there on the penalty kill because you can never have enough of them. But we like what we have going on right now."

Stamkos had scored in eight straight games against the Jets before Stafford and Blake Wheeler had goals within three minutes of each other in the third period to give the Jets a 2-1 win in the last meeting March 14.

Ondrej Pavelec needed to stop only 15 shots to earn that victory, and he likely will be in net again for this matchup. Pavelec has a 2.52 goals-against average in four starts this season after making 37 saves Sunday.

Ben Bishop has a 2.56 GAA while starting all seven for the Lightning, including one back-to-back set. Regular backup Andrei Vasilevskiy has been cleared for full activity after having a procedure last month to remove his top left rib that was pinching a nerve and caused a blood clot, but he's not expected to rejoin the club until next week.

That leaves Kevin Poulin as the only other option in goal if Cooper doesn't want Bishop facing both Winnipeg and Chicago.
