Zatkoff to start for Penguins Thursday

According to a tweet from Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, Jeff Zatkoff will get the start in net for the Pittsburgh Penguins as they host the Buffalo Sabres Friday evening.

This will be the first start for Zatkoff on the season and his first action since coming on in relief in a 4-3 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning back on Dec. 23 of last season.

The Detroit native is 12-7-2 with a 2.58 goals against average and .913 save percentage in 21 career games played.

The Pens opened in the -240 vicinity but are now offered around -211.

Lightning recall F Marchessault

The Tampa Bay Lightning recalled forward Jonathan Marchessault from Syracuse of the American Hockey League, the club announced Thursday.

Marchessault, 24, had three goals in seven games with the Crunch. He briefly saw action with Tampa Bay last season and played in two playoff games.

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) Leon Draisaitl's second goal with 1:02 left broke a tie and the Edmonton Oilers scored four straight goals in a 4-3 victory over the league-leading Montreal Canadiens on Thursday night.

Draisaitl was called up earlier in the day from Bakersfield of the AHL and missed the morning skate. He played in 37 NHL games last season.

Brandon Davidson and Benoit Pouliot also scored, and the Oilers erased a 3-0 first-period deficit to end a three-game skid.

Brendan Gallagher, Torrey Mitchell and Alex Galchenyuk scored for Montreal. The Canadiens have lost two straight after starting the season with nine straight victories.

Edmonton completed the comeback when Ryan Nugent-Hopkins fed it out front to Draisaitl for his second of the contest.

HURRICANES 3, ISLANDERS 2 (OT)

NEW YORK (AP) - Ron Hainsey scored at 2:21 of overtime to lift Carolina over New York.

Brock McGinn and Chris Terry scored in regulation to help Carolina win its second straight to cap a 4-3-0 road trip. Eddie Lack stopped 17 shots.

Hainsey took a pass from Jordan Staal and slid the puck past Islanders goalie Thomas Greiss near the midpoint of the extra period for his second of the season. Terry had tied the score with 5:04 left in the third, finishing off a slick passing play with Eric and Jordan Staal. The goal was Terry's second of the season.

Matt Martin and Frans Nielsen scored for the Islanders, and Greiss finished with 26 saves.

PENGUINS 4, SABRES 3

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Evgeni Malkin scored his fourth of the season on the power play, Jeff Zatkoff made 50 saves in his season debut and Pittsburgh beat Buffalo.

Pascal Dupuis, Patric Hornqvist and Ben Lovejoy all scored their first of the season and Malkin added an assist for Pittsburgh. The Penguins earned their third straight victory, sixth win in seven games and seventh straight over Buffalo. Malkin has four goals and nine points in his last seven games.

Sidney Crosby had two assists, his first points in three games. Crosby is off to the worst start of his career and went without a point in eight of the team's first nine games.

Pittsburgh's power play, the worst in the league, scored its third of the season in 32 chances, breaking an 0-for-11 slump.

Jamie McGinn, Nicolas Deslauriers and Matt Moulson scored for Buffalo

DEVILS 4, FLYERS 1

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Travis Zajac scored twice and Kyle Palmieri had a goal and two assists to lead New Jersey over Philadelphia.

Andy Greene scored an empty-net goal with 6.7 seconds left for the Devils, who won their fourth straight on the road.

Luke Schenn scored for Philadelphia.

Palmieri put the Devils in front at 1:28 into the third period when he blocked Evgeny Medvedev's shot attempt at the blue line, raced past Medvedev and fired a wrister from the left circle over goalie Steve Mason's left shoulder that made it 2-1.

Zajac made it a two-goal lead just over a minute later with his second power-play goal of the night.

Mason made 29 saves. Cory Schneider had 27.

AVALANCHE 2, LIGHTNING 1

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Alex Tanguay and Nathan MacKinnon each had a goal and an assist, Semyon Varlamov made 34 saves and Colorado beat Tampa Bay to end a four-game losing streak.

Varlamov won his 108th game with the Avalanche and moved past Dan Bouchard into second place on the franchise wins list. Jarome Iginla had two assists to move past Phil Housley (1,232) into sole possession of 38th place with 1,233 points in his career.

Tampa Bay, coming off a 1-1-2 road trip, got a goal from Alex Killorn.

STARS 4, CANUCKS 3 (OT)

DALLAS (AP) - Jamie Benn scored midway through overtime and Dallas rallied to beat Vancouver.

Patrick Sharp twice tied the game with goals for Dallas. The Stars have won two in a row by overcoming multiple-goal deficits.

Sharp's second score tied it with 4:35 left in the third period, erasing what had been a 3-1 Canucks lead. Jason Demers had scored about 5 minutes earlier.

Alexandre Burrows, Alexander Edler and Radim Vrbata scored for the Canucks.

Vancouver was held without a shot on goal for nearly 12 minutes to start the game.

Benn scored after skating out of the corner with the puck, shooting from just inside the right faceoff dot 2:28 into overtime.

The Canucks scored first on Burrows' penalty shot, the first awarded in the NHL this season.

JETS 3, BLACKHAWKS 1

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) - Michael Hutchinson stopped 45 shots and Andrew Ladd scored on the power play to lead Winnipeg over Chicago.

Bryan Little set up a pair of goals for the Jets, who stopped the Blackhawks' four-game winning streak.

The Jets (6-3-1) were ahead 2-1 going into the third period on goals by Blake Wheeler and Ladd.

Mark Scheifele added to the lead at 8:04 when he took a pass from rookie Nikolaj Ehlers and beat goalie Corey Crawford on the short side.

Patrick Kane scored the game's first goal, his sixth of the season, at 1:26 into the game on a power play for Chicago (6-4-0).

Crawford had come into the game with a pair of shutouts in his four straight wins. He stopped 28 shots.

BLUES 2, DUCKS 1

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Colton Parayko broke a tie about midway through the third period to lift St. Louis over Anaheim.

Vladimir Tarasenko also scored and Jake Allen stopped 22 shots to help the Blues win for the sixth time in the last eight games (6-1-1)

Hampus Lindholm scored and Frederik Andersen finished with 31 saves as the Ducks closed out a winless five-game road trip (0-4-1). Anaheim was outscored 15-5 on the trip, including a 4-3 loss at Dallas on Tuesday night.

Anaheim entered the game ranked last in the NHL in scoring (1.0 goals per game), was without captain Ryan Getzlaf, who missed his second game and is expected to be out up to 12 days due to appendicitis.

Preview: Maple Leafs (1-5) at Rangers (6-2)
Date: October 30, 2015 7:00 PM EDT

The New York Rangers have been impressive since losing to the NHL's top team, and they have an opportunity to keep it going against one of the league's worst.

The Toronto Maple Leafs visit Madison Square Garden on Friday night winless in their last four games, while the Rangers have at least a point from their last five.

Since a 3-0 loss in Montreal on Oct. 15, New York (6-2-2) has gone 3-0-2 with a 15-6 scoring advantage. The victories have all come by at least three goals with Sunday's 4-1 win over Calgary beginning a three-game homestand. With four days off between the first two, the Rangers might have a better shot at honing in on the kind of completion Dan Girardi wants to see.

"Our record is really good," Girardi after the team played three games in four nights. "But at the same time, we know in here that maybe one or two games we played a 60-minute game really hard. I think you need to find a way to get that 60-minute game."

Girardi scored his first goal of the season while Oscar Lindberg got his fifth. The rookie center, who turned 24 Thursday, leads the Rangers in goals and points (seven) after appearing in one game last season.

"There's no doubt he's found a way to be at the right place at the right time to get us some timely goals," coach Alain Vigneault said of Lindberg, who evened the score at 1 in the second period. "That's pretty impressive. That goal definitely got us going."

The Rangers were more in need of a defensive-zone presence last season against the Maple Leafs.

They dropped two of three in the series, and each game featured nine goals. The Maple Leafs had 15 of them, including six in the first game against Henrik Lundqvist before he was pulled late in the second period. Then-backup Cam Talbot played the rest of the series. Since the start of 2011-12, Lundqvist is 3-4-1 with a 3.50 goals-against average and .873 save percentage against Toronto.

He should be plenty rested this time around, having last played in Saturday's 3-2 shootout loss in Philadelphia. He stopped 46 of 48 shots and has a .949 save percentage over a 1-1-2 span.

Toronto (1-5-2) last played in Monday's 4-3 home loss to Arizona, dropping it to 0-3-1 since a 6-3 win in Columbus on Oct. 16. That stands as the Maple Leafs' only triumph, and they're tied at the bottom of the Eastern Conference with the Blue Jackets at four points.

A struggling penalty kill has been the difference in consecutive regulation losses, allowing four goals in eight chances in games collectively decided by three goals. For the season, their 71.9 percent kill ranks near the bottom of the league, though the Rangers' power play (16.0 percent) isn't turning heads after finishing 21st with a 16.8 mark last season.

"The (penalty kill) has to be better," said Morgan Rielly, who scored for a second straight game along with James van Riemsdyk. "We have to continue to work at that and improve on that. That might've been the difference in the game."

Rielly also had two goals in his last game against the Rangers, while New York's Mats Zuccarello matched him and has three in his last two versus the Maple Leafs.

After the struggling James Reimer played against the Coyotes, Jonathan Bernier figures to face New York. Bernier has been slightly better with a 3.02 GAA and .902 save percentage, but he's 0-4-1. As a starter, he's 2-1-2 with a 3.21 GAA and .918 GAA against the Rangers.

Preview: Blue Jackets (2-8) at Capitals (6-2)
Date: October 30, 2015 7:00 PM EDT

Following one of the worst starts in NHL history, the Columbus Blue Jackets may finally be on the cusp of finding their form.

The Blue Jackets and new coach John Tortorella try to continue turning things around with a third straight victory Friday night on the road against the Washington Capitals.

Columbus (2-8-0) is still tied for the fewest points in the league, but two straight wins following a miserable opening two weeks has turned frustration into optimism.

"Every team is going to go through ups and downs," veteran forward David Clarkson said. "We just went through ours early. It was one of the hardest things we ever went through. But it makes teams better. Hopefully, it makes us better."

The Jackets showed during Tuesday's 3-1 win at New Jersey that they can prevail when not at their best. Despite a season-low 14 shots, they never let up the defensive intensity and were rewarded with three straight goals in the third period to improve to 2-1-0 on a four-game trip and since Tortorella replaced Todd Richards on the bench.

"Those are important games to win," Tortorella said. "We'll be on the other side of it, where a team outplays you and you find a way to win. We'll be on the other side of that sometime during the year, so we'll take it and go from there.

"These are good things as we try to climb the steps."

Sergei Bobrovsky made 23 saves and looked solid after posting a 4.45 goals-against average and .852 save percentage in his first seven starts.

"His game has slowly come along here," Tortorella said.

Boone Jenner has scored half of his team-leading six goals in the last two contests.

"We just want to play the style we want to play," Jenner said. "You see that at times but obviously we can be better at it."

Washington (6-2-0) will look to be better after its five-game winning streak ended with Wednesday's 3-1 loss to Pittsburgh.

The Capitals had scored three or more goals in all but one of their first seven games and were coming off a 7-4 win at Edmonton, but they stalled after Evgeny Kuznetsov opened the scoring in the third period.

"I didn't think we were real sharp," coach Barry Trotz told the team's official website. "We always talk about playing fast, and we weren't playing fast early."

Despite their coach's analysis, the Capitals don't seem too concerned.

"Our main thing is focusing on what's made us successful and realize that this isn't much of a step back," said Braden Holtby, who has a 1.61 GAA in his last five starts. "It's a game we can learn from. Things didn't quite go our way but we'll have a better performance next game."

Kuznetsov, who enjoyed a five-point night against the Oilers, has four goals and six assists in the last four contests.

Teammate Alex Ovechkin has gone two straight without a goal after scoring once in each of his first five. He had a pair of two-goal games against the Blue Jackets last season.

Bobrovsky stopped 39 shots during a 3-2 overtime win at Washington on Dec. 11, then yielded nine goals while losing two straight home starts against the Capitals.

Preview: Flyers (3-2) at Sabres (2-6)
Date: October 30, 2015 7:00 PM EDT

The Philadelphia Flyers already lost to the Buffalo Sabres earlier this week. A change of venue could prove beneficial Friday night.

The Flyers attempt to avoid a three-game slide by continuing their road success against the Sabres.

Philadelphia (4-3-2) won four of five games before falling 4-3 in overtime against Buffalo (3-7-0) on Tuesday. The Flyers followed that with another lackluster effort against another team that failed to reach the playoffs last season, losing 4-1 to New Jersey on Thursday.

"We didn't deserve to win the game," Jakub Voracek said. "They were better than us.

"We always leave 100 percent on the ice, (but) we just didn't play good."

That's rarely been the case over the Flyers' last 14 visits to Buffalo, going 10-2-2 and winning three in a row - all decided by one goal.

Michael Raffl has scored the decisive tally in each of the last two matchups at First Niagara Center, including a third-period tally in a 2-1 victory Feb. 15.

Brayden Schenn leads Philadelphia with four goals, scoring two against the Sabres on Tuesday before setting up his brother Luke Schenn's first tally of the season Thursday.

Brayden Schenn, however, has scored just once in five games in Buffalo, while Voracek has one in nine visits.

That doesn't bode well for the right wing, who has yet to find the net through nine games. Voracek has scored at least 22 goals in three straight seasons while his career-high 81 points last season led the team.

The slowest start of his career came in 2010-11 when he went 11 games without a goal.

The Sabres followed their win at Philadelphia with a 4-3 loss at Pittsburgh on Thursday, despite unloading 24 shots in the third period and outshooting the Penguins 53-29 overall. It was coach Dan Bylsma's first meeting with the Penguins since he was fired in 2014.

"We had a number of good looks," Bylsma said. "I think we gave them some easy opportunities with our puck management in the first."

Bylsma sees some promise in Buffalo generating 93 shots over the last two games.

"It's where we've played," he said. "There are certainly a handful of stretches in tonight's game and the Philly game where we were playing in our own end, but for large portions you're playing in the offensive end. You're having offensive zone time. We have the mentality of getting pucks and bodies there. That's what we've done well."

Ryan O'Reilly has at least one point in four straight games, totaling two goals and five assists. The left wing had two assists Thursday after setting up Tyler Ennis' tally against the Flyers.

He has six points in eight career meetings with Philadelphia.

Ennis has three goals and two assists in the past six games, but he sat out Thursday due to a lower-body injury. He's considered day to day.

Jack Eichel may be looking forward to a return home, where the rookie has scored all three of his goals in six games. The second overall pick failed to get his first on the road Thursday, despite tying five others for the franchise rookie record with eight shots on goal.

Preview: Avalanche (2-5) at Hurricanes (3-6)
Date: October 30, 2015 7:00 PM EDT

After closing out a lengthy road trip with a pair of strong defensive efforts, the Carolina Hurricanes open a homestand against a team that's had trouble scoring goals of late.

The Hurricanes aim for a third consecutive win and season sweep of the Colorado Avalanche as they begin a four-game stretch in Raleigh on Friday.

After Cam Ward made 25 saves in Tuesday's 3-1 victory over Detroit, Carolina (4-6-0) held the New York Islanders to 19 shots in Thursday's 3-2 overtime triumph that concluded a 4-3-0 trip. It's the Hurricanes' first win streak of the season and followed losses in Los Angeles and San Jose by a combined 8-2 score.

"I was more than pleased with the trip and now we just have to make an effort as a group of 23 guys to do it each and every day," coach Bill Peters told the NHL's official website.

Ward also was in top form in Carolina's Oct. 21 visit to Denver, turning aside 26 shots before Victor Rask scored 1:49 into overtime to give the Hurricanes a 1-0 win.

The Hurricanes are 0-2-0 at PNC Arena but have won five straight against Colorado (3-5-1) in Raleigh, where the Avs last won Jan. 12, 2008.

Colorado has scored just seven goals during that skid and has the same amount over a current five-game stretch, losing the first four before Semyon Varlamov's season-high 34 saves made the difference in Thursday's 2-1 win at Tampa Bay.

The win was Varlamov's 108th with the Avalanche, trailing only coach Patrick Roy for the most in franchise history, and earned the previously struggling goaltender a second straight start.

'He seemed really under control,' Roy said. 'He had a strong night from the start to the end. He made some great saves.'

Varlamov entered the game with a 3.93 goals-against average through five starts and had lost his last three, including an 18-save effort against Carolina. He does own a 2.04 GAA in nine career meetings with the Hurricanes and has allowed two goals or fewer in each of the last eight.

Nathan MacKinnon and Alex Tanguay supported Varlamov's latest outing with a goal and an assist each, but the Avs went 0 for 6 on the power play after failing to convert five chances in Tuesday's 4-1 loss at Florida. Colorado is 2 for 29 with the man advantage over its last six games after connecting on 5 of 10 opportunities through the first three.

"We'll take the two points; it's two points we desperately need right now," Tanguay said. "We have to continue to play with that same urgency. We have to want the puck and want to make plays with it and hopefully bounces will come our way."

The Avalanche have been struggling on the penalty kill as well, having yielded five goals over the last three games when short-handed. The Hurricanes, however, are 1 for 21 on the power play over their last six.

Carolina did get two clutch even-strength goals against the Islanders, with Chris Terry forging a 2-all tie with 5:04 remaining in regulation and Ron Hainsey recording the winner midway through overtime. Jordan Staal assisted on both after being held without a point in the first nine games.

Preview: Bruins (4-3) at Panthers (5-3)
Date: October 30, 2015 7:30 PM EDT

Though the Boston Bruins have generated plenty of offense during their current surge, the club's long-term success might depend on how well it plays defense.

Looking to build on their best defensive effort of the young season, the visiting Bruins can extend their point streak to six games Friday night against the Florida Panthers.

After totaling seven goals while opening with three consecutive losses, Boston (4-3-1) has 26 during a 4-0-1 stretch. However, it allowed an average of 4.14 goals prior to Tuesday's 6-0 rout of Arizona.

Tuukka Rask stopped 24 shots and the Bruins killed three penalties en route to a second straight win and first at home.

"Our thinking is defense first. We take a lot of pride in our battles," captain Zdeno Chara said. 'Play it simple and play to our strength. Our goals are up from previous years. We're still working on our goals-against improvements."

Though the Bruins missed the playoffs for the first time in eight seasons in 2014-15, they ranked eighth by allowing 2.45 goals per contest. They're hoping Tuesday's game is the start of a trend back toward that level of stinginess.

"Keeping the goals-against down is always the goal,' Rask, who prior to the win against the Coyotes had a 4.40 goals-against average, told the Bruins' official website.

"So that's a good building block for us, and we're trying to keep doing this."

David Krejci, meanwhile, has seven goals and seven assists while recording a point in all eight contests. It's Boston's longest streak to start a season since Joe Juneau and Dmitri Kvartalnov each went 14 straight in 1992-93.

"It is what it is," Krejci said. "When you win, it's good ... Make sure that we keep this atmosphere for as long as we can."

Krejci managed one assist in two games last season against Florida (5-3-1), which took both home meetings with Boston. Rask had a 1.53 GAA in his first five starts at Florida before taking the brunt in a 4-2 loss April 9.

Boston's Jimmy Hayes, who recorded three of his eight points Tuesday, set career highs with 19 goals and 16 assists for Florida last season. He returns Friday after being acquired in a July deal that sent Reilly Smith to the Panthers.

Third on the team with seven points, Smith has two goals with an assist while Florida has won two straight following an 0-2-1 stretch. He had one of the Panthers' three power-play goals in Tuesday's 4-1 victory over Colorado.

'It's fun when you have a night like that and get three goals and move the puck like that,' said coach Gerard Gallant, whose team came in 3 for its last 23 with the man advantage.

Florida also killed all five penalties after its opponents went 7 for 23 (30.4 percent) with the extra skater in the previous five contests.

"(Special teams) are huge, it's a big part of the game now," said forward Vincent Trocheck, who has three goals and two assists in the last three games. "It gets the momentum going."

Florida's Aleksander Barkov will not need surgery to repair a broken right hand suffered at Chicago last Thursday, but will miss two to four weeks. He has three goals and three assists in seven games.

Preview: Senators (2-3) at Red Wings (4-4)
Date: October 30, 2015 7:30 PM EDT

A return to Joe Louis Arena was supposed to solve some issues for the Detroit Red Wings. Instead, they carry on with more questions.

The Red Wings take on the visiting Ottawa Senators on Friday night in the first of a home-and-home set between a pair of Atlantic Division teams seeking answers.

Detroit (4-4-1) opened with three wins but is stuck in a sloppy 1-4-1 slide. The Red Wings picked up their first win in nearly two weeks with a 3-2 victory at Vancouver on Saturday to close a 1-2-1 road trip, but they followed with a middling 3-1 loss to Carolina on Tuesday on home ice.

They fell to 2-2-0 in Detroit, where they play 18 of their next 25 games.

Detroit was happy with its defense against the Hurricanes, allowing just 21 shots, but the offense couldn't manage much despite its 26 chances on net. It was the Red Wings' third one-goal game in their last five, a span in which they have eight total goals.

Overall, it was a performance somewhere in the middle that led to another bad result.

"It's not bad. It's not great, either," Niklas Kronwall told the team's official website. "We know we have more in here, and we need more. We need more out of everybody. I've got to be better, and we've all got to be better as a team. There were too many turnovers."

The giveaway numbers might not be too telling with Detroit falling in the middle of the league with 7.78 per game - but when they've happened, they've hurt.

In Tuesday's loss, Carolina's first two goals came off turnovers: a misplay by backup goaltender Petr Mrazek and a pass from Kronwall that escaped Tomas Jurco.

"Sometimes it's mental, sometimes it's confidence," coach Jeff Blashill told the team's website. "We'll continue to work on it in practice."

Ottawa (4-3-2) hasn't had as much of a problem scoring, especially in a 5-4 shootout win over Calgary on Wednesday. The issues have been on defense with the Senators surrendering 15 goals in their last four games. They're also used to falling behind, allowing the first goal in seven straight games.

Though his team picked up its first home win against the Flames, coach Dave Cameron wasn't exactly enthusiastic.

"My biggest concern ... was our lack of energy," he said. "I know some of it was from bad execution, but we didn't have near the jump that we should have had based on how few of games we've played and the amount of practices we've had and that's my biggest surprise. I can't figure that out."

After starting the season with three wins in four games, Ottawa has stumbled to a 1-2-2 record over the last two weeks.

The Senators, who beat Detroit 2-1 in a shootout March 31 but have lost four of six meetings, face a struggling goaltender they have seen success against in the past. Jimmy Howard has let eight of the 76 shots he's faced reach the back of the net in his last two starts - both losses in regulation and overtime.

Howard is 5-3-0 against Ottawa in his career, but he holds a 3.15 goals-against average and .897 save percentage versus the Senators - one of only five teams against whom he has a sub-.900 mark.

Preview: Blackhawks (6-4) at Wild (6-2)
Date: October 30, 2015 8:00 PM EDT

The Minnesota Wild have waited nearly six months for another chance at the Chicago Blackhawks. They may be catching the defending Stanley Cup champions at the perfect time.

Mired in a scoring slump and minus their top defenseman, the Blackhawks head to Saint Paul for the teams' first meeting since last May's Western Conference semifinals.

Chicago (6-4-0) was able to win its first three games with Duncan Keith sidelined by a recent knee procedure, but it's scored just three goals over its last three. Corey Crawford was in net for consecutive 1-0 home overtime victories over Tampa Bay and Anaheim, and the Blackhawks produced only Patrick Kane's power-play goal on 46 shots while having a four-game win streak end with Thursday's 3-1 loss in Winnipeg.

The Blackhawks have gone 235:58 since Artem Anisimov recorded their last 5-on-5 goal 4:02 into a 3-2 victory over Florida on Oct. 22.

'At this point in time we can do things a little bit different to make it tougher on their goalie,' Kane said. 'Try to get to the net, stay at the net, get shots through, get rebounds and try to bang in goals that way. Get some dirty goals because it seems all the pretty plays are not really happening for us.'

Kane, whose five goals fueled the Blackhawks' four-game playoff sweep of Minnesota, has done his part by scoring three of his six goals and adding four assists over a five-game point streak. Jonathan Toews netted the game-winner in the recent overtime wins, his lone two goals this season.

Chicago, losers of three straight on the road, now brings its sputtering offense into XCel Energy Center, where Minnesota (6-2-1) has scored 13 goals in going 4-0-0 thus far. The Wild maintained their perfect home mark with Tuesday's 4-3 come-from-behind victory over Edmonton, surging ahead when Charlie Coyle scored 43 seconds after Ryan Suter recorded his second goal of the night midway through the third period.

Minnesota has played the Blackhawks tough in each of the past two regular seasons, having gone 5-4-1 over that span. The playoffs have been another matter, with Chicago winning eight of 10 matchups in eliminating the Wild in the conference semis in back-to-back years.

"It's always going to be a difficult game against them," Wild goaltender Devan Dubnyk said. "It's exciting - obviously there's a rivalry there - but we just try to win games, and it's always going to be a tough one against Chicago."

Dubnyk sports a 1.66 goals-against average while winning three of his last four appearances but struggled in last year's playoff series between the teams, permitting three or more goals in three of the Wild's four losses.

Crawford owns a 1.21 GAA while starting Chicago's last five contests, but Scott Darling is expected to make his first start since allowing four goals on 24 shots in a loss at Washington on Oct. 15.

Darling, who has never faced Minnesota, had 28 saves in Chicago's 4-1 win over the New York Islanders in his Oct. 10 season debut.

Preview: Canadiens (9-2) at Flames (2-7)
Date: October 30, 2015 9:00 PM EDT

The Montreal Canadiens were just 20 minutes from getting back in the win column on their road trip when their normally stellar defense faltered, sending them to their first losing streak of the season.

The Canadiens will get a quick opportunity to bounce back from their stunning defeat and try to avoid a winless trek through Western Canada on Friday night against the scuffling Calgary Flames.

Montreal took command early Thursday against Edmonton, scoring three times in the first 18 minutes, and carried a two-goal lead into the final period. The Canadiens and star goaltender Carey Price then proceeded to give up three goals in a span of 12:43 in a 4-3 loss.

Leon Draisaitl's second goal of the game with 1:02 remaining provided the winning margin for the Oilers.

"It shouldn't happen to good teams. We've got to make sure it doesn't happen again. There's not much to say other than that. We let our foot off the gas," captain Max Pacioretty said. "We have a game (Friday) where we've got to come back and prove this was a fluke and this is not our team."

In the opener to their three-game trip Tuesday, the Canadiens (9-2-0) were denied a chance to tie the best start in NHL history with a 5-1 drubbing to Vancouver. Price, who had a 1.29 goals-against average in his first seven starts, was also in net for that game.

Montreal, a winner in its first five road games, could give Mike Condon his third NHL start in this visit to the Flames (2-7-1). Calgary enters this game having lost three straight (0-2-1) and is 1-6-1 in its last eight.

Sam Bennett's first NHL goal with 7:28 left in regulation gave the Flames a point Wednesday against Ottawa, but they fell 5-4 in a shootout. Calgary was outscored a combined 8-1 in the first two games on its road trip.

The Flames also lost goaltender Jonas Hiller to a lower-body injury when he collided with Bobby Ryan in the third period, and Karri Ramo was recalled from AHL Stockton on Thursday, one week after he was placed on waivers.

"Injuries unfortunately are a part of our game, at any position," coach Bob Hartley said. "Obviously, it's been a rough start, but there's no quit in this organization. We're going to keep pushing."

The Canadiens split their two games with the Flames last season and won in a shootout in Calgary on Oct. 28 to end a string of seven consecutive defeats there. They lost 6-2 at home Nov. 2.

Josh Jooris scored a pair of goals in that victory for Calgary, but he has zero points in his first eight games this season. Mark Giordano had two goals and one assist in the two meetings, and fellow defenseman T.J. Brodie provided four assists.

Brodie returned from a broken bone in his hand Wednesday.

Lars Eller has five goals and two assists in nine career games against the Flames, but he has two points in his last nine overall contests. Pacioretty has three goals and three assists in his last six matchups.

Preview: Canucks (3-2) at Coyotes (5-4)
Date: October 30, 2015 10:00 PM EDT

Getting Martin Hanzal back would give the Arizona Coyotes a lift offensively. It could also provide a spark for Max Domi.

With Hanzal among a trio potentially set to return from injury, the Coyotes attempt to bounce back from their worst loss of the season Friday night against the struggling Vancouver Canucks.

Hanzal is one of six players with a league-high 10 assists. The veteran center has been a major influence on Domi, Arizona's star rookie who has four goals and six assists.

With Hanzal sidelined with a lower-body injury, Domi was a minus-3 while the Coyotes (5-4-1) lost 6-0 at Boston to conclude a 2-2-1 road trip.

Arizona may have Hanzal back, but it's also awaiting word on center Antoine Vermette while defenseman Connor Murphy (both lower body) is expected to be back.

Vermette has been held without a point in seven games, while Murphy has two in nine.

"Murphy will play for sure," coach Dave Tippett told the team's official website. "Vermette and Hanzal we'll re-evaluate in the morning.

"It would be ideal to get them both back, but we'll see. Neither one we're going to put into trouble if we think there's a possibility of injuring things further, but if they can play they'll play and that would certainly help."

Production from Anthony Duclair would also be helpful. The 20-year-old left wing has a team-leading five goals, but none in the last four games.

The Coyotes fell 3-1 in the most recent home matchup with Vancouver on March 22, ending their four-game winning streak in the series there.

The Canucks (4-2-4) have dropped five of six (1-2-3) and they'd like to settle this matchup in regulation after blowing a two-goal, third-period lead to fall 4-3 in overtime at Dallas on Thursday.

Vancouver is 1-0-4 in games ending in overtime or shootouts after going 12-0-5 in such contests last season.

"We were good last year 4-on-4 and in shootout," coach Willie Desjardins said. "We won quite a few games that way. And that's been a big difference in the games this year."

Radim Vrbata is starting to get going, totaling three goals and one assist in the past four games. The right wing's 31 goals led the team last season while his 32 assists were a career high.

Vrbata, who had two stints with the Coyotes from 2007-14, had four points in five matchups last season with three coming in two at Arizona.

Jared McCann is looking to get back on the score sheet after being held without a point by the Stars. The center, the 24th overall pick in the 2014 draft, had two goals in a 5-1 win over Montreal two days earlier, giving him four on the season to put him in the thick of the rookie scoring race with Duclair, Domi and others.

McCann, though, is yet to score through three road games.

Daniel Sedin has six points in his last four matchups with Arizona, scoring a goal and assisting on another in a 5-0 home victory April 9. He enters this meeting with four points in four games after getting two assists Thursday.

Sedin's eight points lead Vancouver.

Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

-- Oregon 61, Arizona State 55 OT- Wild game ended at 2:40 ET. ASU gained 741 yards, had 37 first downs....and lost.

-- TCU 40, West Virginia 10-- Mountaineers are 0-4 in Big X.

-- North Carolina 26, Pitt 19-- Tar Heels won seven in row after losing opener.

-- Hawks 112, Knicks 101-- Back to reality; Atlanta was 10-24 from arc.

-- Clippers 104, Mavericks 88-- Rough night for Mark Cuban-- DeAndre Jordan had 15 rebounds, four blocks against team he almost signed with.

-- Patriots 36, Dolphins 7-- Pats converted 3rd-and-16 on first drive; it ended there.

**********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.........

13) NBA is trying to have teams play less back/back nights; LY, teams averaged 19.3 back/backs. This year, it is 17.8 and no team has more than 20.

12) I'd love to know what a President feels like the day after his term in office ends; imagine spending eight years in the most consuming job ever, where you can't drive a car and your assets are frozen and then one day it ends.. What do you do?

11) Central Michigan's basketball team is pretty good; how do I know? They had a hard time scheduling games-- when they called teams to fill out five slots in this year's schedule, BYU was the only team that would play the Chippewas, so they're going to play four non-D-I games, which huts their strength of schedule-- too bad.

10) ESPN's Magazine had a story on LSU's Leonard Fournette, how he gets a police escort back to his dorm after home games, from a state trooper who played for LSU 20+ years ago and whose day job is security for Governor Bobby Jindal. Without the police escort, the kid whould get beseiged by autograph seekers and it might take him hours to get away fron the stadium.

9) Dallas Mavericks lost to the Clippers last night and don't play again until Sunday night against the Lakers; they're staying in LA all weekend.

8) Baseball happenings: San Diego Padres named Arizona 3B coach Andy Green their new manager; Washington named former Padres' manager Bud Black their new skipper, Arizona named former Angel pitching coach Mike Butcher their new PC. .

7) San Diego State's basketball team has a new $15M practice facility, where kids can go 24/7 to work on their games. I was a basketball manager in college, but at a D-III school; can't imagine getting a call to go rebound for someone who wants to shoot at midnight, but it happens at the D-I level.

6) How is Tom Thibodeau not doing NBA games on TV? Guy is a basketball lifer, he was 417-283 coaching the Bulls-- we could learn a lot from him about basketball, plus I'm very curious if he has a TV personality. His in-game interviews were epic for being boring, but his taped tribute to the late Jerry Tarkanian this year was excellent.

5) Walgreen's drug stores bought out Rite-Aid this week for $9.4B; we have lot of drug stores around here. Must have lot of sick people.

4) Last March/April in college hoop, ACC teams were 19-7 in all postseason games, Pac-12 teams were 15-6, MVC teams 14-3. Loyola/Evansville both won a consolation tournament, pumping up the Valley's record.

3) Jets cut punter Steve Weatherford after one game; he nets $51K for punting four times and holding for five kicks. Good work if you can get it.

2) Analytics people in sports like to evaluate players using one number; I'm sure how they get to this number is well thought out but in my humble opinion, it is impossible to accurately evaluate a human being's performance with one number-- there are just so many intangibles that can't be measured accurately.

It is what makes sports so interesting; Raiders/Giants cut James Jones but with Green Bay (and Aaron Rodgers) he might make the Pro Bowl. Measure that.

1) Best wishes to Minnesota football coach Jerry Kill, who retired this week for health reasons (he has epilepsy). Coach Kill revived the Gophers' program, setting up his successor to be a contender in the Big 14.
