NHL roundup: Sharks finish trip with win in Columbus

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The San Jose Sharks made quite the statement at the end of an impressive road trip.

Down two goals early in the third period, the Sharks scored three times in just over seven minutes to beat the Columbus Blue Jackets 5-3 Sunday in Nationwide Arena.

For the first time in Sharks history, they swept a six-game road trip, one that started nine days earlier in Detroit and wound through Buffalo, Boston, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.

Patrick Marleau scored early for the Sharks, but it was a trio of goals -- by Joe Pavelski, Brent Burns and Brenden Dillon -- that energized the San Jose comeback.

Pavelski added an empty-net goal in the dying minutes of the game.

Ryan Johansen, Boone Jenner and Cam Atkinson had goals for the Blue Jackets, while Sergei Bobrovsky made 24 saves.

Canadiens 4, Islanders 2

MONTREAL -- Alex Galchenyuk snapped a lengthy goal drought to lift Montreal over the New York Islanders at the Bell Centre.

David Desharnais, Tomas Fleischmann and Max Pacioretty also scored for Montreal. John Tavares and Anders Lee replied for the Islanders.

Carey Price made 21 saves for the Canadiens while Thomas Greiss stopped 23 shots for New York.

Hurricanes 4, Kings 3

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Justin Faulk scored two power-play goals -- his NHL-leading seventh and eighth with the man-advantage -- as Carolina avoided a disastrous homestand with a victory over Los Angeles.

Faulk's two goals extended his points streak to five games with a team-leading 15 points in 20 games coming off an All-Star year in which he scored 15 goals.

Jeff Skinner and Brett Pesce also scored for Carolina while Anze Kopitar scored twice and Dustin Brown once for the Kings.

Devils 3, Canucks 2

VANCOUVER, British Columbia -- Mike Cammalleri scored a goal and collected two assists as New Jersey defeated Vancouver.

Andy Greene, on a power play, and Adam Henrique also scored for the Devils, who ended a two-game losing skid. Devils goaltender Cory Schneider, a former Canuck, made 36 saves, including one on a third-period penalty shot.

Henrik Sedin, short-handed, and Radim Vrbata, on a power play with 0.6 seconds left, scored for the Canucks. Vancouver has just one win in its past six games (1-4-1).

Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

-- NFL teams coming off a bye are 18-10 vs spread, 11-5 as an underdog.

-- Three of last 11 Maui Classic champs won national title that year.

-- Free agent catcher Chris Iannetta leaves the Angels to sign with Seattle.

-- Over last six weeks, NFL underdogs are 48-31-3 against the spread.

-- Gas is $2.39 where I live; was told this weekend it is $1.84 in Texas.

-- With Buffalo losing last night, only nine of 32 NFL teams are over .500.

**********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but........

13) Let me get this straight; LSU is going to fire football coach Les Miles because the team has regressed some the last couple years. Miles is 110-32 at LSU, won 2007 national title, played for the title again in 2011. His biggest flaw is being at LSU while Nick Saban has been at Alabama. How do you fire a guy who is 110-32?

Meanwhile, the jackass GM for the 76ers still has a job; not only can't they win one game, the GM has assembled a god-awful team that is openly referred to an "a CBA team" by other talent evaluators. 110-32 gets fired, 0-15 stays. Go figure.

12) Jay Cutler has had five offensive coordinators in seven years with the Bears.

11) There have been fifteen 10-0 teams in the Super Bowl era; nine of them got to the Super Bowl, with six of the nine winning the Super Bowl.

10) No NFL head coach has ever won three replay challenges in a game; you get the third challenge if you win your first two.

9) Wake Forest 82, Indiana 78-- 12-point dog Deacons were down nine but rallied to win despite having couple of rotation guys suspended. Bad loss for Indiana. This was a great game to watch, fast-paced. Danny Manning has some good young players.

8) Bill Walton had the Wake-Indiana game on ESPN2; when he does a game, I learn stuff, but it seldom has anything to do with basketball. Today's tidbit: Hawai'i is one of four states that does not allow roadside billboards (Vermont-Maine-Alaska).

7) Six of the ten starters in the LSU-Marquette game are freshmen.

6) Why are stores open on Thanksgiving? Workers should have Thanksgiving Day off. Maybe they like it because they probably get paid more, but it seems to be a bit much. Open at 6am on Black Friday if you must, but close the place on holidays.

5) Clippers lost seven of their last nine games after a fast 4-0 start; Josh Smith got into a very loud argument with one of the coaches after a loss the other night. Coaching in the NBA can't be much fun, main benefit being the big money and no recruiting.

4) There is such a thing as the World Championship of Crossword Puzzles and it is held in Stamford, CT. The same guy won it the last five years; would think there was more parity in the world of puzzles, but apparently not.

3) The last time an SEC running back led the country in rushing? 1949.

2) Summit League includes teams like South Dakota State, Oral Roberts; this league gets little national publicity, but they're 18-6 against the spread this month.

1) I'm positive Chris Mullin will build a winning program at St John's, but he has what amounts to an expansion team this year- Red Storm got crushed out at Maui by Vanderbilt Monday-- it was 92-55, could've been way worse. St John's got a bad break when Indiana lost to Wake-- next the Johnnies face an angry Hoosier squad.

Close games continue to crush Canucks' NHL betting wins

Team to watch: Calgary Flames (8-12-1)

No pun intended, but the Flames have run hot and cold since the start of the season. Calgary opened the year with two wins in its first 11 games, but has since won six of its last 10 games including a stretch of three victories in the last four contests. The Flames knocked off Washington, New Jersey and Chicago, cashing in on the moneyline at +160, -123, and +125.

Calgary puts that run to the test with road trip this week, starting in Anaheim, then traveling to Arizona and San Jose. The Flames, who have allowed just five total goals in those three wins, are just 3-7-1 away from home but will be getting generous moneyline prices as the visitors.

Team in trouble: Vancouver Canucks (8-8-6)

The Canucks have just two wins in their last 10 games, stretched thin by an East Coast road trip last week and suffering a hangover in two home games since, falling to New Jersey after a win over Chicago. Vancouver doesn’t get to enjoy the comforts of home very long, having to head out again for an extended period.

The Canucks open a four-game road trip in Minnesota Wednesday and are playing four games in seven days, taking them into December. Close games have cost Vancouver bettors dearly with six losses in overtime/shootout and winning just two of its 14 one-goal games.

Total team: Edmonton Oilers (13-6-1 O/U)

Over trends are hard to come by in the NHL these days. Totals don’t get much higher than 5.5 goals and it takes a combo of respectable offense and horrific defense to get past that number. The Oilers have those perfect components, which is why they’ve played Over in three straight games and are 8-2 Over/Under in their last 10 contests. Edmonton was shelled for 20 goals in its last six games while countering with 18 goals of its own, including five in a 5-1 victory over New Jersey that edged the 5-goal total.

The Oilers hits the road for five straight games starting Monday. At first glance, bettors may want to keep riding the Over, however, Edmonton has trouble scoring away from home – averaging 3.2 goals at home and just 2.3 away – so this may open up value to buck this trend and find value in the Under, especially if totals hit 5.5.

Injury to note: Mike Smith, G Arizona Coyotes

Smith is out with a lower-body injury and it doesn’t look like he’ll be back immediately, forcing the Coyotes to call up from the minors. Smith has been hot and cold this season, starting the campaign strong but falling back into bad habits in recent weeks.

Anders Lindback steps in as the No. 1 goalie in Arizona but hasn’t faced much action, with a 2-4 record and .909 save percentage. Head coach Dave Tippett may shake things up with a new face between the pipes if Smith remains questionable this week. Arizona is allowing three goals a night on the season, 25th in the NHL.

Playbook: Philadelphia Flyers (6-9-5)

The Flyers have sputtered in the first two months of the season, crawling out just six wins. The big issue is the team’s inability to find the back of the net, ranked dead last in the NHL in scoring at 1.7 goals per game. That scoring drought has hit historic proportions for Philadelphia, which has set a franchise record for fewest goals – netting only 35 through the first 20 games.

Heading into Monday’s home game with Carolina, the Flyers hadn’t scored in their last 138 minutes of action. But despite those problems, head coach Dave Hakstol is still focusing on playing tighter defense and not giving up easy goals, knowing his club can’t battle back. Philadelphia is 5-10-5 Over/Under as of Monday and with the team trying to tighten the defense – rather than fix the offense – that Under value could continue.

NHL roundup: Kings win on the road, defeat Panthers

SUNRISE, Fla. -- Tyler Toffoli, Alec Martinez and Marian Gaborik scored goals as the Los Angeles Kings defeated the Florida Panthers 3-1 on Monday night at the BB&T Center.

Milan Lucic, Jeff Carter, Jordan Nolan, Kyle Clifford and Anze Kopitar each had an assist for the Kings.

Aleksander Barkov scored for the Panthers.

Blues 2, Sabres 1

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Troy Brouwer and Robby Fabbri each had a goal and St. Louis Blues came from behind to beat Buffalo.

Jake Allen made 24 saves for the Blues, who have won their last four trips to First Niagara Center and beaten the Sabres in 18 of the last 20 meetings dating to 1999.

David Legwand scored for the Sabres,, who are winless in their last five games.

Avalanche 4, Jets 1

WINNIPEG -- Colorado capped a seven-game road trip with a win.

Cody McLeod scored the winner at 6:45 of the third period when Zach Redmond's shot caromed off the left winger and past Michael Hutchinson.

It was the fifth goal of the season for McLeod, who grew up some 200 miles northwest of Winnipeg in Binscarth.

Flyers 3, Hurricanes 2, OT

PHILADELPHIA -- Philadelphia finally enjoyed some home cooking - and some goals - by defeating the Carolina in overtime.

Shayne Gostisbehere won it 24 seconds into the extra session with a power-play goal.

Philadelphia earned its first home win since Oct. 24.

Bruins 4, Maple Leafs 3, SO

TORONTO -- David Krejci scored the only goal in a shootout to give Boston the win.

It was the third win in a row for the Bruins (11-8-1).

Boston goaltender Tuukka Rask stopped 39 shots and Toronto goalie James Reimer made 26 saves.

Rangers 3, Predators 0

NEW YORK -- Henrik Lundqvist continued his brilliant season by stopping 31 shots in New York's win.

Lundqvist leads the league with 12 wins and was tops in both goals against average and save percentage before registering his second shutout Monday.

Rick Nash and Kevin Hayes and Derek Stepan scored their sixth goals of the season for the Rangers, who have won 11 of 12.

Caps 1, Oilers 0

WASHINGTON -- Braden Holtby stopped 33 shots and defenseman Dmitry Orlov scored the game's only goal with 6:32 left as Washington blanked Edmonton.

Washington broke the scoreless tie when Tom Wilson sent the puck across the ice in the Edmonton zone.

The puck came off the boards to Orlov in the right circle and he one-timed a blast over Anders Nilsson's left shoulder for his second goal in two games.

Preview: Senators (7-5) at Stars (17-4)

Date: November 24, 2015 8:30 PM EDT

Boosted by a strong homestand, the Ottawa Senators visit the NHL's hottest team with their goaltender playing at his highest level of the season.

Craig Anderson puts his shutout streak on the line against the high-scoring Dallas Stars, who enter Tuesday night's matchup with a chance for their longest winning stretch in four seasons.

Anderson followed up a 25-save shutout Thursday against Columbus with 36 stops in Saturday's 3-0 victory over Philadelphia, capping a 3-0-2 residency for Ottawa (10-5-5) in which he posted a 1.22 goals-against average in four starts.

'Being in the right spot at the right time when the puck is coming in and just being patient and not trying to do too much. That's the key,' he said.

Anderson wasn't nearly as sharp in the Senators' most recent road outing, permitting each goal in a 7-5 loss to Nashville on Nov. 10. Another tough task awaits in Tuesday's opener of this three-game trip, as the Western Conference-leading Stars' 74 goals trail only Montreal (78) for tops in the NHL.

Dallas (17-4-0) has 18 goals during its second five-game win streak of the season and received strong goaltending of its own last time out, with Antti Niemi's 22 saves supporting Jamie Benn's two third-period goals in Saturday's 3-0 win over Buffalo.

'He made some really big saves, especially early on when we had the power play,' Benn said. 'We gave up a couple of short-handed breakaways, 2-on-1s, and he was there to back us up. It was pretty impressive to see. He definitely earned that shutout.'

Niemi had 24 saves in a 3-1 triumph at Buffalo four days earlier but has been at his best at American Airlines Center, compiling a 5-1-0 record with a 2.00 GAA and two shutouts in six starts.

Dallas, which last won six straight in March 2012, improved to 3-2-0 when trailing after two periods after Benn notched his league-leading 13th and 14th goals less than two minutes apart. The Stars are outscoring opponents 31-17 in the third.

"Maybe it's the speed that we bring that wears the teams down, and in the third period it just opens up," forward Antoine Roussel told the Stars' official website.

Benn has four goals and four assists during the win streak and defenseman John Klingberg also has eight points over the run. Tyler Seguin added two assists on Saturday to tie Klingberg and Chicago's Patrick Kane for the league lead.

Ottawa's Erik Karlsson and Bobby Ryan also have been going well, with Karlsson amassing five goals and five assists over a six-game point streak and Ryan generating 10 points over a career-high eight-game run.

The duo may have to remain productive to offset a defense that's allowing a league-high 34.3 shots per game and was porous in two 2014-15 losses to the Stars that extended their series losing streak to seven. The Senators haven't beaten the Stars since a 5-4 overtime victory at home Dec. 20, 2008, and last won in Dallas in December 2007.

Though Seguin didn't register a point in last year's meetings, Klingberg scored three of Dallas' 11 goals and Benn had two in a 6-3 win at Ottawa on Jan. 29.

Preview: Flames (8-12) at Ducks (6-10)

Date: November 24, 2015 10:00 PM EDT

The Anaheim Ducks have looked better lately after a horrid start, though they ran into a setback their last time out.

They'll try to bounce back Tuesday night by continuing the league's longest home winning streak in a series in nearly 29 years as they seek a 21st straight home victory against the Calgary Flames.

Anaheim (7-10-4) hasn't lost to the Flames at home since a 5-1 defeat Jan. 19, 2004. The 20-game run is tied for the fourth-longest home winning streak in NHL history by one franchise against another, and is the longest since Philadelphia's NHL record of 23 straight home victories against Pittsburgh from Feb. 17, 1980-Jan. 29, 1987.

The Ducks have lost three straight at home this season, while Calgary is 3-7-1 on the road.

Anaheim's offense had looked improved, averaging 2.7 goals during a 10-game stretch before Saturday's 5-0 loss at Tampa Bay. The Ducks scored only 10 goals in their first 10 contests.

Saturday's defeat denied Anaheim a second straight win. The team's four-game winning streak Nov. 1-7 remains the only time it has won consecutive games.

"Tough league, you've got to string wins together," captain Ryan Getzlaf said. "Win one, lose one, those kind of things, it doesn't build anything in the standings, it doesn't build anything in the (locker) room."

The Ducks lost despite a 30-24 advantage in shots, and have a dead-even margin on the season. Their goaltending has been competitive with a .913 save percentage that ranks in the middle of the pack, but they simply haven't been as good as their opponents at converting chances, as their 5.9 shooting percentage is one of the league's worst.

"It's just the inconsistency in our game," said Getzlaf, who has one goal and eight assists in 17 games. "Game-to-game, period-to-period. I don't think it's so much focused on one period. We've got to find a way to build something where we're finding a way to play the right way all time."

Getzlaf has eight goals and 18 assists in 18 appearances during Anaheim's home winning streak in the series.

The Flames (8-12-1) are seeking a third consecutive victory for the first time. They've allowed a league-worst 3.5 goals per game this season, but have seen that number drop to 2.8 during a 5-4-0 stretch.

Johnny Gaudreau scored in overtime in Friday's 2-1 win against Chicago as Calgary improved to 5-1 in overtime and shootouts compared to 3-12 in regulation.

"I think a lot of guys in our locker room like it," Gaudreau told the team's official website. "We've got a fast D-core that is good with the puck and we've got a lot of skilled offensive guys. I think we like it a lot."

Gaudreau has been more consistent at home with 14 points in 10 games compared to six in 11 on the road.

Calgary owns one of the league's worst penalty kills, letting opponents score on 25.4 percent of opportunities. Meanwhile, the Ducks have five goals on 17 power plays in their last five home games.

Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

-- Warriors 111, Lakers 77-- How did the Lakers get this bad? Golden State is now 16-0 and appears to be a juggernaut.

-- Marquette 78, Arizona State 73 OT-- Four Sun Devils fouled out.

-- Indiana Hoosiers lost to Wake Forest on Maui Monday; apparently they had a practice after they lost. Way to take the fun out of the trip, coach.

-- Louisiana Tech 82, Ohio State 74-- Buckeyes lost to Tex-Arlington last week.

-- Kansas 92, UCLA 73-- Game was 59-33 at the half. 59. to. 33.

-- My favorite two college basketball analysts on TV: Bill Raftery, Doug Gottlieb. ESPN let both of them walk. Not a good move, especially with Gottlieb- Raftery wanted to do Big East games, so he went to FS1 with the Big East.

**********

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Top 8, bottom 5 teams in NFL.......

32) Browns-- Johnny Manziel is either the dumbest person on this planet, or angling for a trade to the Cowboys. I'm thinking he'd like to go back to Texas.

31) 49ers-- Colin Kaepernick is 27-20 as an NFL starter; he led the Niners to a Super Bowl three years ago, but they're getting rid of him. Seems like once they got their new publicly funded stadium, management stopped caring.

30) Chargers-- In last eight games, San Diego started one drive in enemy territory; their opponents started 15. Hard to win that way. They have a QB heading nto his mid-30's and don't know where they'll be playing home games next year.

29) Saints-- Allowing 31.5 ppg; already fired their defensive coordinator. Struggling team with an aging star QB, lot like the Chargers.

28) Rams-- 25% of the NFL is 4-6; Rams probably aren't the worst of the eight, but their offense is so totally fouled up, despite having two legit weapons in Gurley and Austin. This isn't all Foles' fault; guy had 27 TDs, two INTs two years ago- if you protect him at all and give him a decent tight end, he will be a productive player.

As if this season couldn't get worse, WR Stedman Bailey was shot twice ithis week, in the head and hip; he is currently under a 4-game suspenion, so he was in Florida. Get well soon and stay the hell out of south Florida.

8) Seahawks-- Was tempted to put surging Chiefs into this slot, but have feeling that Seattle will play better with the finish line in sight.

7) Broncos-- I picked against Denver last week, but Osweiler did just enough to win in Chicago, in his first NFL start; he managed the game well and Chicago was awful in the red zone on offense. Broncos-Patriots this week; should be interesting.

6) Vikings-- Mike Zimmer didn't get an NFL head coaching job until he was 58; Bruce Arians didn't get one until he was 60. NFL teams aren't hiring the right people.

5) Packers-- Aaron Rodgers is really, really good; amazing that he didn't get a college scholarship out of high school. His coach at Cal, Jeff Tedford was a head coach in the CFL this year but wants to get back in the college game. Someone should hire him.

4) Bengals-- Curious to see the reaction Bengals get from the home crowd this week, in a should-win game against the Rams. They booed Andy Dalton at the All-Star Game this summer, at the celebrity softball game. It is a cynical fanbase.

3) Cardinals-- I enjoy coach Arians' aggressive approach; they throw the ball down the field and they blitz, even when they're ahead. They play to win the game.

2) Panthers-- In the 49 years of the Super Bowl era, 15 teams have been 10-0; nine of those teams made the Super Bowl- they went 6-3 in those games. Carolina does not have great receivers; Newton is making them look better than they are.

1) Patriots-- 15 of 32 NFL teams are 5-5 or 4-6; not sure if New England is that good or if the league just stinks. 86 days until pitchers and catchers report. 112 days until the NCAA tournament starts. Don't forget, 2016 is a leap year.
