Preview: Blues (42-22) at Sharks (41-25)
Date: March 22, 2016 10:30 PM EDT

Brian Elliott gave the St. Louis Blues a major boost with a shutout in his return.

He'll have a bigger challenge in his next outing since he likely has bad memories of facing the San Jose Sharks.

Elliott and the Blues seek to complete a five-game trip with a winning record Tuesday night when they meet a Sharks team in position to clinch a playoff berth.

The goaltender returned Saturday with 19 saves for his second shutout in a 3-0 victory over Vancouver. The effort came after St. Louis (42-22-9) conceded 13 goals over consecutive defeats.

'I think for our whole team, we needed to have a good game and get a good solid St. Louis Blues type of hockey game,' Elliott said. 'We didn't play well the last couple of outings and this is good. Hopefully we can take it into San Jose and wrap up the road trip with a high."

Elliott came back from a 10-game absence from a lower-body injury suffered when he faced the Sharks (41-25-6) in a 6-3 defeat Feb. 22. He was on a roll with a 1.99 goals-against average in winning five straight starts before he allowed three goals in the first 12:59 of that one.

He also yielded three goals on 32 shots in a 3-1 defeat to San Jose on Feb. 4.

Coach Ken Hitchcock, whose team improved to 2-2-0 on this trip, said Elliott will start Tuesday.

"It's his turn," Hitchcock told the Blues' official website. "Shutout, played well, we'll play him and then we'll gauge it on the weekend what we're going to do."

San Jose can stretch its season-high home win streak to five and clinch a Pacific Division playoff berth with a victory. The Sharks can also clinch if Arizona fails to win in regulation Tuesday against Edmonton.

They are one point behind Anaheim in the race for home-ice advantage in the first round while the Blues are two points behind Central Division leader Dallas.

The Sharks got two wins over the weekend to start this six-game homestand, 4-1 over the New York Rangers on Saturday and 3-0 over the Coyotes on Sunday behind backup James Reimer's 25 saves.

Coach Pete DeBoer figures to turn back to Martin Jones, who has allowed four goals on 55 shots in beating the Blues twice this season.

"We want to enjoy this one and get some rest but obviously St. Louis is a big test for us," DeBoer said.

Joe Thornton has six points in a five-game run, Joel Ward has scored three goals in the last two games and Brent Burns is second in the NHL among defensemen with a career-high 65 points.

"We feel real comfortable, I think," Thornton said. "We're confident with the lineup we have every night and whoever is out (there) has a chance to do something each night."

Thornton has a seven-game point streak against St. Louis. The Sharks have won the last six matchups he has taken part in, with the center amassing 14 points.

San Jose's Joe Pavelski has 34 goals to match St. Louis star Vladimir Tarasenko for fourth in the league. Tarasenko has eight points in his last six games, including his 100th career goal Saturday.

Preview: Flyers (35-24) at Blue Jackets (29-35)
Date: March 22, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

The Philadelphia Flyers have had few letdowns while compiling one of the NHL's best records over the past month.

Fresh off a pivotal win over a division rival, they'll need to avoid a slip up when they continue their late-season playoff push Tuesday night against the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Twelfth in the Eastern Conference on Feb. 24, Philadelphia (35-24-12) has gone 9-2-1 since to close within a point of eighth-place Detroit with a game in hand. The Flyers are now just three back of the New York Islanders for the first wild card after Monday's 4-1 win in Brooklyn that opened a critical four-game trip.

Balanced scoring and solid goaltending have been constants during Philadelphia's surge, and the trend continued Monday. Four different players had goals and Steve Mason recorded 23 saves to improve to 5-1-1 with a 1.98 goals-against average in seven March starts.

"The guys are playing hard and they're playing together," coach Dave Hakstol told the NHL's official website. "We've known all along that we've got a tough battle to get above the line in the playoff race. The guys are having fun and they're working hard right now. There's a goal in mind, but I think every day it's more critical to focus on the task at hand, to show up, to play hard, and have fun while you're doing it."

Philadelphia is averaging 3.42 goals per game during its 12-game run, with eight players scoring three or more over that span.

The Flyers' next challenge will be maintaining their focus against a Columbus team it routed 6-0 in Philadelphia on March 5 but hasn't beaten on the road since Dec. 13. 2005. The Blue Jackets have won seven straight meetings at Nationwide Arena, pulling out a 3-2 shootout victory on Dec. 19.

"We have to move on to (Tuesday) and bring the same effort," center Nick Cousins said.

While Philadelphia's offense has been consistently productive for much of its rise, Columbus (29-35-8) has been feast or famine in that department throughout the season's second half. The Blue Jackets have scored four or more goals in each of their last eight wins and two or less in all of their past 13 losses.

After mustering three goals during a three-game skid from March 11-17, the Jackets broke out in Saturday's 6-3 home victory over New Jersey before struggling again in Sunday's 2-1 loss to the Devils.

"Neither team gave the other too much," said coach John Tortorella. "I don't think we played badly. We just couldn't score."

Slumps by some of its top forwards have contributed to Columbus' erratic performances. While Cam Atkinson has six goals over a nine-game stretch, Brandon Saad has none over his last six, ex-Flyer Scott Hartnell zero over his past seven and Brandon Dubinsky none over a 10-game span.

Columbus managed only 19 shots in the March 5 loss as Mason posted his fourth shutout of the season. The former Blue Jacket has a 1.95 GAA while starting all three prior matchups this season, though he could give way for Anthony Stolarz's NHL debut with the Flyers playing on consecutive nights.

Stolarz, 19-15-3 with a 2.59 GAA in 42 games for Lehigh Valley of the AHL, was recalled Sunday with Michal Neuvirth out for the regular season with a torn meniscus in his left knee.

Columbus' Sergei Bobrovsky had 27 saves on Saturday to earn his first win since a 27-save effort in a 4-1 victory at Philadelphia on Dec. 5. The former Flyer allowed 10 goals in losing his first three starts since returning from a groin injury earlier this month.

Preview: Kings (44-23) at Wild (34-28)
Date: March 22, 2016 8:30 PM EDT

Consecutive razor-thin wins haven't lessened the Minnesota Wild's margin for error in their quest for a playoff return.

Needing to capitalize on a home-heavy upcoming stretch, the Wild's sense of urgency remains high entering Tuesday night's matchup with the Pacific Division-leading Los Angeles Kings.

Minnesota (34-28-11) stayed right on Colorado's heels in the race for the Western Conference's final wild-card spot with Sunday's 3-2 shootout win at struggling Chicago, one night after it topped Carolina in a shootout by the same score. One point behind the Avalanche, the Wild visit Denver on Saturday in their lone road test over the next five games.

'We've had back-to-back nights of it,' interim coach John Torchetti said of the consecutive shootout victories. 'It says we want it. Some people question us. Not me. I think we want it.'

Minnesota will play six of its nine remaining regular-season games at Xcel Energy Center, where it's managed just five goals in losing two of its last three. The Wild have just 10 over their last four overall and face a Kings team that's yielded the second-fewest in the NHL (163).

Los Angeles (44-23-5) is coming off a rare defensive clunker, however, opening a three-game trip with Monday's 5-2 defeat to Nashville. The Kings had outscored opponents 16-6 in winning their previous four and have allowed just 29 goals while going 11-3-1 since Feb. 20.

Jonathan Quick, 5-0-1 with a 1.63 goals-against average over his six prior outings, permitted three on 17 shots in the second period and was pulled in favor of Jhonas Enroth to begin the third.

"We just came out flat, we weren't ready to play, and obviously it showed early," said defenseman Drew Doughty, who scored the first of two third-period goals during a failed comeback effort.

Enroth could draw the start with the Kings, four points ahead of second-place Anaheim in the Pacific and one behind Dallas for the West lead, playing on consecutive nights. He sports a solid 2.03 GAA for the season but has struggled against the Wild, allowing 20 goals in losing four straight meetings, the most recent a 6-2 defeat in Saint Paul with Dallas on Feb. 22, 2015.

Minnesota will be counting on another sharp performance from Devan Dubnyk, who had 29 saves before thwarting all three shootout attempts against Chicago. He recorded 31 against Carolina the previous night to bounce back from Thursday's 7-4 loss at New Jersey, in which he stopped only 5-of-8 attempts before being removed late in the first period.

"You just want to play well," Dubnyk told the Wild's official website. "My job and my focus is to go out there and give these guys a good feeling, and a good chance to win every game."

Charlie Coyle, the Wild's leader with 21 goals, has gone nine straight without one but scored in both recent shootouts. Nino Niederreiter has four over a five-game point streak, however, and eight in his last 15 games.

Los Angeles' Anze Kopitar extended his point streak to six games with two assists in Monday's loss. The standout center scored the game-winner in a 2-1 overtime win over Minnesota at Staples Center on Oct. 16.

Coyle and Erik Haula, also on a five-game point streak, had goals to support Darcy Kuemper's 32 saves in the Wild's 3-0 victory at Los Angeles on Jan. 21.

Preview: Capitals (52-15) at Devils (36-31)
Date: March 25, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

The Washington Capitals have a chance to clinch home-ice advantage through the playoffs and their second Presidents' Trophy this weekend. The New Jersey Devils, meanwhile, are just hoping to bolster their chances of reaching the postseason.

On the verge of getting defenseman John Carlson back, the Capitals are also hoping T.J. Oshie will be available Friday night for their road game against the New Jersey Devils.

Washington (52-15-5) can eliminate every team but Dallas for the No. 1 overall seed with a victory in Newark since the Stars, who have 97 points with seven games remaining, swept the season series. That means the clinching day could come as early as Saturday, and it might happen before Washington wraps up its home game against St. Louis depending on how Dallas fares that afternoon in San Jose.

The Capitals - seeking their first Presidents' Trophy since 2009-10 - have won three of four and snapped a three-game road losing streak with a 4-2 victory at Ottawa on Tuesday.

That game could mark Washington's final one without its top-scoring defenseman. Carlson, who has six goals and 25 assists, has been out since Feb. 24 with a lower-body injury and underwent a procedure for his ailment.

"I think Carly has the ability to be a game-breaker-type player," fellow defenseman Karl Alzner said. "Just having him in the lineup I think allows us to have a little but more freedom for all the guys to utilize their minutes more effectively. You don't have to pace yourself at all because Carly's in there playing between 20 and 26 minutes of hard minutes."

Oshie is dealing with an illness that could keep him from traveling to New Jersey, though Saturday's game against St. Louis would mark the first time he's played his former team. With Oshie likely out, the Capitals are seeking their seventh consecutive win over the Devils (36-31-7) and fourth this season.

Washington has used key third-period goals to keep that run going. The Capitals scored twice in the final 6:05 in a 4-3 home victory Feb. 20, and Paul Carey tallied the tying goal with 5:53 remaining in regulation in a 3-2 shootout win in New Jersey on Feb. 6.

Washington opened its season with a 5-3 win against the Devils, as Alex Ovechkin sparked a three-goal third period with a go-ahead tally. Ovechkin, who scored his league-best 43rd on Tuesday, has nine goals and four assists in his last 12 games in the series.

New Jersey, bidding to avoid a season sweep by the Capitals, also is attempting to reduce a six-point deficit to claim the Eastern Conference's final playoff spot. The two teams in front of the Devils - Philadelphia and Detroit - are both idle Friday.

The Devils held their ground Thursday with their fifth win in seven games, winning 3-0 at Pittsburgh on Thursday night. Kyle Palmieri scored twice and Scott Wedgewood made 39 saves in his second NHL start.

Wedgewood stopped 27 shots in his debut, a 2-1 win over Columbus on Sunday.

"I think our group is having a lot of fun trying to string some wins together in a playoff race," Palmieri said. "Some people have counted us out, but we haven't been eliminated yet."

A victory would give the Capitals a single-season franchise-record 25 road wins, bettering their 2009-10 mark. They've also won three straight in New Jersey.

Preview: Islanders (39-24) at Lightning (42-26)
Date: March 25, 2016 7:30 PM EDT

The Tampa Bay Lightning and New York Islanders are assured two matchups in the next 11 days, and if things shake out properly, it could be as many as nine by the end of April.

A potential preview of a first-round playoff matchup comes Friday night at Tampa in the second game of a six-game homestand for the Lightning, who end the season with a four-game road trip that includes a stop in Brooklyn.

For the Lightning (42-26-5) and Islanders (39-24-9) to meet in the first round, Tampa Bay would need to win the Atlantic Division and New York would need to finish as the Eastern Conference's first wild card. That's right where the teams were after their latest games with the Lightning starting the homestand with Tuesday's 6-2 win over Detroit and the Islanders earning a 3-1 home victory over Ottawa on Wednesday.

The Lightning are used to the schedule working out as it will for them in the next few weeks, and coach Jon Cooper started by resting his players heading into the Red Wings game.

"Tampa, Florida, Anaheim, all the California teams, they play home for a long string and they go on the road for a long string," Cooper told the team's official website. "So that's something we have to deal with quite often. ... We rested and we talked about this a lot, 'We're going to give you this rest, but it's mental rest, it's physical rest.' A part of this too is we're 10 games out and it's way too bunched up and we're playing one of our rivals. If you can't pull yourself together for that one, we're in trouble."

It seems instead the Lightning are digging themselves out of trouble with back-to-back wins after a 1-4-1 span. Steven Stamkos, Nikita Kucherov and Ondrej Palat each had a goal and an assist against Detroit. Stamkos has five goals and three assists in his last five games, while Kucherov has scored in his last three with two assists.

The Lightning have split their last six games with an average of 35.7 shots in the wins and 22.0 in the losses, and those numbers aren't going unrecognized.
