Preview: Blue Jackets (19-28) at Canucks (20-19)
Date: February 04, 2016 10:00 PM EDT

Vancouver's extended All-Star break is coming to an end, and it's easing back into things by completing a three-game homestand against two beatable opponents.

The first of those, however, is complicated with the Columbus Blue Jackets and former coach John Tortorella visiting Thursday night.

Tortorella first had to return to the Blue Jackets' bench to make his first trip back to Vancouver a possibility. The in-season hire missed three games before the break with two broken ribs suffered in a practice collision but returned for Tuesday's 5-1 loss in Edmonton. He's now up against the team he coached two seasons ago with the Canucks missing the playoffs for the first time since 2007-08 resulting in his dismissal.

"He'll want this game coming back in," Vancouver coach Willie Desjardins said. "His guys will be geared up for it."

While other teams returned to action as early as Tuesday, the Canucks (20-19-11) will go eight days between games and conclude the homestand Saturday versus Calgary. Vancouver entered the break with consecutive losses after Nashville scored the decisive goal in a 2-1 result on Jan. 26 in the final five minutes.

Desjardins thinks the flip to the post-All-Star schedule means his team needs to begin approaching everything like the postseason.

"I can't see how we couldn't be," Desjardins said. "To me, I look at our last two games that we let get away, and that was a big difference. That's something you recognize now - how big those games are. Every game going forward is going to be big. I would think the whole room would have to see that every game's going to be a playoff game. ... We're in a spot where we have to catch up."

That might begin with not only a stronger power play, but also cultivating more opportunities. The Canucks have gone six games without a power-play goal, but that's come on only eight chances.

"I think that's one area that we look at, and I think it made a difference for us last year," said Desjardins, who had Vancouver back in the postseason in his first year on the job. "And I think if we can get them going in the right direction, it can make a difference this year."

Vancouver has enjoyed a 15-2-2 stretch against the Blue Jackets with an average of 3.31 goals per game, including a 5-3 win in Columbus on Nov. 10 for Tortorella's first game against his former team.

While the Canucks begin the second half five points out of the playoffs, the Blue Jackets (19-28-5) are at the bottom of the Eastern Conference. The loss to the Oilers followed a two-game winning streak with Edmonton outshooting the Canucks 18-8 in the first period before scoring four second-period goals.

"We need to be ready to start the game on time because we were a little behind for the first 20," said Brandon Dubinsky, who had five points in the two wins prior to the break.

"We were a little rusty but both teams were coming off the same All-Star break and they had even more time off than we did. We can't use that as an excuse. We need to be ready to play from the drop of the puck."

Especially so since Columbus is depleted at goaltender. Sergei Bobrovsky (lower body) and Curtis McElhinney (ankle) have both been out. McElhinney is with the team on the four-game trip, but Joonas Korpisalo faced the Oilers. Despite allowing five goals, he's posted a 2.14 goals-against average over a 4-1-1 span as a starter.

Likely counterpart Ryan Miller is 2-5-1 with a 3.27 GAA in his last nine games, but he's gone 3-1-1 with a 1.79 mark in his last six contests against Columbus.

Preview: Bruins (26-18) at Sabres (21-26)
Date: February 04, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

Road success helped the Boston Bruins work back into the thick of the Eastern Conference race prior to the All-Star break, and that's where they will have to steady themselves following a disappointing homestand.

The Bruins start a road-heavy stretch on Thursday night by opening a home-and-home set against the Buffalo Sabres.

Boston (26-18-6) ended a miserable 2-7-1 stretch with a 4-1 win at Buffalo on Jan. 15, snapping a two-game skid against its Atlantic Division foe. That opened a 5-1 spurt for the Bruins with three victories coming in as many road games.

But just as they started to trend upward again, the Bruins dropped home games on each side of the All-Star break. Tuesday's 4-3 overtime loss to Toronto was especially bitter after Brad Marchand and David Krejci scored 26 seconds apart early in the third period before Boston gave up a pair later in the third.

"It's called focus," coach Claude Julien told the team's official website following Wednesday's practice. "We kind of lose track of that at times, and get away from things that we used to do well to make us successful."

The Bruins rank third in the NHL with 2.94 goals per game, a number they feel should give them plenty of chances to win. However, they have surrendered 10 in their back-to-back losses, exposing a defense that has allowed an average of 2.94 in 17 games since Dec. 26.

The Maple Leafs scored three of their four goals with tips in front of the net.

After hosting Buffalo on Saturday and Los Angeles on Tuesday, the Bruins embark on a season-high six-game road trip that will last 10 days. The Bruins are 15-5-3 away from home while outscoring their opponents 72-49.

"Fortunately for us, we've had more success on the road (than at home)," Julien said.

It's a similar story for Buffalo (21-26-4), which is 9-15-2 at First Niagara Center. Since winning 6-3 at Boston on Dec. 26, the Sabres are 6-10 overall with losses in six of seven home games.

However, they earned wins on the final two stops of their three-game road trip after rallying for Wednesday's 4-2 victory at Montreal. Buffalo trailed 2-1 entering the third period but Jamie McGinn and Johan Larsson scored before an empty-netter from Brian Gionta sealed it.

'We just stuck with it,' McGinn said. 'We stayed positive. We got shots to the net and fortunately we found the back of the net.'

It's been difficult for opponents to do just that against Robin Lehner, who has a .939 save percentage in five starts since returning from an ankle injury. But Chad Johnson might get the call against his former team in the second of back-to-back games.

Johnson, who made 27 appearances with Boston in 2013-14, surrendered five goals in a 6-3 loss at the New York Rangers on Jan. 25. He earned the win after making 30 saves in the Dec. 26 matchup in Boston, improving to 2-1 against the Bruins with a .931 save percentage.

Jonas Gustavsson started for Boston in each of this season's first two games against the Sabres, but he was pulled from his last start due to an elevated heart rate. Tuukka Rask has just a 3.26 goals-against average and .899 save percentage in his last four starts, though he has won his last three against Buffalo with a 1.65 GAA.

Preview: Red Wings (25-17) at Panthers (30-15)
Date: February 04, 2016 7:30 PM EDT

The Florida Panthers have been trying to prove they belong in the NHL's upper tier all season, and who they've beaten in the last two weeks helps confirm their arrival.

Next, they can continue to justify their spot atop the Atlantic.

The Panthers can pad their division lead over the visiting Detroit Red Wings on Thursday night in the first of two meetings within five days.

Florida (30-15-5) followed a franchise record 12-game winning streak with a 0-3-1 stretch from Jan. 11-18, but an offensive explosion against stiff competition has righted the ship. The Panthers had scored just five goals during their skid, but have totaled 19 in four consecutive wins.

Tuesday's 5-2 victory at league-leading Washington, which played without Alex Ovechkin, gave them five goals in three straight games. Florida upped its point total to 65 - second in the Eastern Conference to the Capitals' 74.

That victory capped an impressive four-game stretch that started with wins over last season's Stanley Cup finalists, Chicago and Tampa Bay.

'That's great teams - the best teams in the league,' said Aleksander Barkov, who had a goal and an assist against Washington. 'We can beat any team in this league and can dominate any team.'

The Panthers have won 10 of their last 11 games at BB&T Center and host Pittsburgh on Saturday before playing at Detroit on Monday.

Florida has beaten the Red Wings in four of the last five meetings, including a 2-1 overtime win at Detroit on Nov. 29. Roberto Luongo made 28 saves and Brian Campbell scored the game-winner in the extra period.

That victory came during the tail end of Florida's poor offensive start to the season, which saw it struggle to a 2.43 goals per game mark through Dec. 12 - eighth lowest in the league. Since, the Panthers are third with a 3.10 average.

Leading point scorer Jonathan Huberdeau has three goals and three assists during this four-game run, while Reilly Smith has four goals and two assists during a five-game point streak. Barkov has a pair of goals and three assists for a four-game point streak, and Vincent Trocheck has three goals and two assists in the last three.

Meanwhile, Detroit (25-17-8) has been one of the NHL's lowest-scoring teams in the last month-plus. The Red Wings have averaged 2.07 goals in 15 games since Dec. 28, the fourth-lowest mark in the league.

A 4-2 win at the New York Islanders on Jan. 25 gave Detroit its first four-goal effort in 10 games, but it came out of the All-Star break with Wednesday's 3-1 loss at Tampa Bay - the team sandwiched between Florida and the Red Wings in the Atlantic.

'It's a big game, it's a (big two) points,' Henrik Zetterberg said. 'Losing points to this team, you can't be happy about it.'

Detroit, which is 2-3-1 since Jan. 17, had won seven of its previous eight road games. The Red Wings are 14-7-3 away from home.

Luongo's win over Detroit in November gave him four in his last five starts against the Red Wings, though his career 2.84 goals-against average versus Detroit is his fifth worst against the league.

Jimmy Howard will likely earn the start in the second game of a back-to-back for the Red Wings, and he'll be looking to win for the first time since Dec. 3. He is 0-3-3 since, and has a 5.19 GAA and .835 save percentage in his last four starts.

Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

-- Oregon State 71, Utah 69-- Have you ever seen two 3-point shooters fouled in last 0:02.2 of a game? It happened here, with lead changing both times.

-- Vanderbilt 77, Texas A&M 60-- We'll see Commodores on Selection Sunday.

-- UTEP 112, Marshall 108-- You score 108 points, you should win. Always.

-- Portland 73, Pepperdine 70-- 11.5-point dog Pilots were biggest upset of night.

-- Sacramento State 83, Montana 79-- Big Sky leaders blew 43-29 halftime lead.

-- USC 80, UCLA 61-- Trojans spanked UCLA twice this year; neither was close.

**********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud........

13) I'm watching Blue Chips as I type this; a great movie that I haven't seen in a long time. Nick Nolte, Shaquille O'Neal, Mary MacDonnell, Penny Hardaway, Ed O'Neill, Alfre Woodard- Rick Pitino even coaches one of the other teams in the first scene.

There is one scene where Nolte's character is recruiting a midwestern kid whose father is highly religious; of course the coach pretends to be the same religion, but when the father asks, "First Baptist or Southern Baptist?", he has to guess which one. Good thing for the movie he guesses right.

12) Which reminds me of these politicians who are running for President; they'll say whatever they can, if they think it'll get them votes. Ted Cruz babbles on and on about the Washington establishment, but his wife works for Goldman Sachs. Oy.

11) If you like college basketball, kenpom.com is a great website; lot of stats, solid knowledge. They had an article this week saying how the Washington Huskies have had 36 players (now 37) players foul out of games this season. Next highest on the list is Bradley, with 23. Washington is young and aggressive, a good team, but they do commit a lot of fouls.

10) In case you're wondering, the record is 50 disqualifications, set by Providence in 1987. Coached by Rick Pitino, with Billy Donovan as a point guard, they also made the Final Four, so maybe fouling a lot isn't such a bad thing. Playing passively is worse than being too aggressive..

9) Michigan is the only team this season that hasn't had a player foul out this year. Was weird the other night seeing Indiana go on a 28-0 run against the Wolverines the other night. Doesn't happen a lot at that level.

8) I'm not big on Jay Bilas as a TV analyst, but he worked an NBA game on ESPN with Mike Breen and Doug Collins and they made a great team. Lot of good talk about regular basketball stuff, not much BS. Bilas/Collins have a relationship because of Chris Collins having worked at Duke- they were good together.

7) Washington Wizards are the only NBA team this season with a better road record than home record.

6) Last time the Denver Broncos didn't sell out a home game? 1969.

5) Fred McNair is the new football coach at Alcorn State; he is the brother of the late Steve McNair-- Fred spent three years here in Albany as the backup QB for the Firebirds in the Arena Football League. We wish him well.

4) Good luck to Jonny Gomes, wh is headed to Japan to play for Rakuten Golden Eagles in Japan. Gomes was a marginal big leaguer, but a great teammate. When Ray Fosse spoke glowingly of him on A's telecasts, as far as his reverence for the history of the game, that spoke a lot. He could be a manager someday.

3) Raiders-Texans are going to play a game in Mexico City next year; the first NFL game in Mexico since 2005.

2) Career tip: If you're an NFL player, especially a marginal one, its a very bad idea to get caught in a prostitution sting a week before the Super Bowl. I'm just sayin'...

1) There is one reason why NBA basketball is better than college basketball and it has nothing to do with the rules. College basketball has better rules, but the NBA has the greatest players on the planet!!! There are nitwits who want to foist NBA rules on the college game, but unless you have Steph Curry's talent level, it won't matter.

Preview: Capitals (36-9) at Devils (26-20)
Date: February 06, 2016 1:00 PM EDT

With Alex Ovechkin back in tow, the Washington Capitals appear poised to resume their winning ways.

The visiting Capitals can build on their latest victory with a fifth consecutive win over the New Jersey Devils, who should have their No. 1 goaltender available Saturday.

Back from his one-game suspension for missing last weekend's All-Star festivities, Ovechkin scored the tiebreaking goal with 2:40 left in regulation to give Washington (36-9-4) a 3-2 victory over the New York Islanders on Thursday.

'He's a goal scorer,' said Braden Holtby, who made 24 saves in his first post-All-Star Game appearance. 'That's what we need him to do. He came through in the right time.

"That's the way our team is. Every guy has their role and everyone seems to be doing it. That's Ovi's role."

Ovechkin has three of his team-leading 29 goals in his last four contests for the NHL-leading Capitals, who avoided their first three-game slide by bouncing back from Tuesday's 5-2 defeat to Florida. Bothered by a lower-body injury, Ovechkin sat out the All-Star Game and by league rules was forced to miss one game.

He admitted being rusty in his first action since Jan. 27, but found his form when it counted.

'Practicing is one thing, but when you're playing, it's a totally different thing, a different level," he said. It was a little bit hard, but at the end, I just kept rolling and we did our job.'

The Capitals have done a fine job despite the NHL's top power-play unit going 4 for 24 over the last seven games. They scored twice on five chances in a 5-3 home win over New Jersey (26-20-6) on Oct. 10.

Keith Kinkaid made 22 saves in that contest for the Devils, and had a season-high 37 in Thursday's 3-2 shootout loss at Toronto. Kinkaid made his ninth start in place of Cory Schneider, who sat with an undisclosed injury he apparently suffered while stopping 31 shots in Tuesday's 3-2 win over the Rangers.

Neither Schneider nor Devils coach John Hynes appear concerned with the injury, and the veteran netminder believes he should be ready to return for this matchup. Schneider has posted a 1.71 goals-against average while winning eight of his last 13 starts, but a 3.03 GAA during an 0-2-1 stretch against the Caps.

In pursuit of their first playoff appearance since 2011-12, the Devils blew a late 2-1 lead Thursday but managed to earn at least one point for the sixth time in seven contests.

"I think it was a valuable point to gain," Hynes said. "It was a tough, hard-fought game.

"However, we didn't necessarily play our best. We'll take it and we've got to make sure we're better going into Washington."

With a goal and an assist, veteran defenseman David Schlemko has two and four assists in five games.

Adam Henrique scored the first of his 16 goals this season against Washington but has one in the last nine.

Ovechkin has eight goals and three assists in his last 10 against New Jersey.

Though Holtby yielded three goals on 24 shots to the Devils in October, he's won four straight in the series and has a 1.29 GAA in a 6-1-0 stretch against them.

Preview: Rangers (28-18) at Flyers (23-18)
Date: February 06, 2016 1:00 PM EDT

Wayne Simmonds' scoring binge has pushed the Philadelphia Flyers to the verge of matching their longest win streak of the season.

The New York Rangers haven't been able to harness J.T. Miller's bevy of goals into an extended run.

Both players have shined in recent matchups between the teams, and Simmonds looks to lead the Flyers to a fourth consecutive victory Saturday.

Simmonds has six goals and three assists in a five-game point streak, and he's scored four times in the past two of his team's three consecutive wins. He had two goals and an assist in the Flyers' highest-scoring performance of the season, a 6-3 victory at Nashville on Thursday.

Simmonds' linemate Claude Giroux also had two goals and an assist while Brayden Schenn scored in a third straight game.

The Flyers (23-18-8) were next-to-last in the league with 2.24 goals per game in their first 46 but have outscored opponents 14-8 during their win streak.

"I said earlier in the year that we weren't getting any bounces. I think things have kind of turned and we're starting to get some bounces," Simmonds said. "We're just staying calm. We're just sticking with our game plan."

Miller has eight goals and one assist in the last eight games, beginning with a 3-2 shootout victory at Philadelphia on Jan. 16. The Rangers, though, have gone just 5-3-0 in that stretch and alternated losses and wins in the past four contests.

They fell 3-2 to New Jersey in their return from the All-Star break Tuesday, their 13th loss in 16 road contests, then bounced back for a 4-2 home win over Minnesota on Thursday.

Miller had the tying goal in the second period as New York (28-18-5) rallied from an early 2-0 deficit and assisted on Derick Brassard's go-ahead tally with 14:14 remaining.

"This was a huge test for us to see where we were as a team," Miller said. "We've been up and down with the wins lately, and to be down 2-0 in the first and hold them to nothing is a good response. It's a good test of character for the group."

Miller has four goals and one assist in his last five against Philadelphia. Simmonds has recorded four goals and two assists in his past four matchups with the Rangers, but his tying goal in the third period couldn't lift the Flyers to a fourth consecutive win in the series in January.

Philadelphia has taken two of three meetings with New York this season, splitting a pair of shootouts at home. The Flyers won 3-2 in the Rangers' first visit Oct. 24.

They won't have Sean Couturier for this matchup, as the center is expected to miss the next four weeks after re-aggravating a lower-body injury. Couturier, placed on injured reserve Friday, has nine goals and 15 assists and recorded 16 points in his last 16 games.

The Flyers have called up their leading scorer from their AHL affiliate, Nick Cousins.

"I think we all know it's a big loss for us, but we've got other guys who are going to fill in and need to pick up the slack," general manager Ron Hextall said. "No one is going to replace (Couturier). It's got to be a group effort. I like the resiliency of our team, and we've got to continue with that."

Rick Nash is expected to remain out for the Rangers because of a bone bruise on his left leg, but defenseman Kevin Klein could play despite fracturing his thumb Tuesday.

Preview: Islanders (26-17) at Red Wings (25-18)
Date: February 06, 2016 2:00 PM EDT

The Detroit Red Wings' most recent win came against the New York Islanders in their final game before the All-Star break. Back-to-back road losses followed, but the start of a five-game homestand might not provide much relief.

Detroit has dropped five in a row at Joe Louis Arena and looks to avoid its longest skid there in two seasons in Saturday's rematch with the Islanders.

Justin Abdelkader and Danny DeKeyser scored in a 1:11 span of the second period to lead the Red Wings to a 4-2 victory over New York on Jan. 25. Detroit (25-18-8) was then outscored 9-4 in back-to-back games in Florida.

They allowed their most goals this season in a 6-3 defeat to the Panthers on Thursday. Jimmy Howard gave up five - three in the first 11:06 - to give him an 0-4-3 record and 3.93 goals-against average in his last eight starts.

Detroit has allowed four goals on seven power plays in its two defeats after killing off 25 of 28 penalties in its previous 10 games.

"We've just got to keep grinding," coach Jeff Blashill said. "We've got a big game against the Islanders on Saturday. ... We've been in these playoff-type games the whole year. It's going to continue to be like this for the last 30 games. We have to buckle in and be ready to grind it out every day."

Petr Mrazek was in goal for a 3-1 loss to Tampa Bay on Wednesday and is expected to return to the net Saturday. He stopped 27 shots Jan. 25.

New York (26-17-6) has split its two games since the All-Star break, topping Minnesota 5-3 on Tuesday and losing 3-2 at Washington on Thursday.

The Islanders allowed Alex Ovechkin's go-ahead goal with 2:40 remaining in their third loss in four road games, but defenseman Thomas Hickey was pleased with his team's showing.

"I thought we had a really good effort and most nights that's going to win you a lot of games against any team and sometimes it's going to beat them, but just not quite enough," he told the team's official website. "We can be proud of our effort."

The Islanders will try to bounce back by sending the Red Wings to their first six-game losing streak at Joe Louis since an 0-2-6 skid Oct. 21-Nov. 19, 2013.

Detroit had dropped five consecutive home games against New York before a 4-1 victory Jan. 31, 2015. The Red Wings were outshot 23-19 but Mrazek shined in net.

Tomas Tatar scored the opening goal in that game and has two goals and two assists in his last four against the Islanders. Tatar has three assists in his past four contests but is in the midst of a seven-game goal drought.

Islanders forward Brock Nelson has recorded three goals and two assists in his last four games against Detroit. He has seven goals and three assists in his past 10 contests.

New York has killed off 27 of 29 penalties in its last nine games but the Red Wings have scored on four of their last eight power plays in the series. The Islanders have gone 9 for 29 with a man advantage in their past 10 meetings with Detroit.

Preview: Oilers (21-26) at Canadiens (24-24)
Date: February 06, 2016 2:00 PM EDT

The return of Connor McDavid has momentarily revitalized the Edmonton Oilers' offense.

Issues on both ends of the ice continue to plague the reeling Montreal Canadiens.

Looking for a third straight victory since the All-Star break, the Oilers can also continue their success in this series by extending the Canadiens' longest regulation home skid in 14 seasons Saturday.

Two days after returning from a 37-game absence to record a goal with two assists in a 5-1 win over Columbus, McDavid had two more assists as Edmonton (21-26-5) equaled its highest-scoring game of the season with Thursday's 7-2 rout of Ottawa. The 2015 top overall pick has six goals and 11 assists in 15 games.

"Connor is a big part of it, but it takes a group to win," Oilers coach Todd McLellan told the NHL's official website. "It doesn't matter how good you are."

The Oilers averaged 2.2 goals and converted 14 percent of their power-play chances while McDavid missed almost three months with a broken clavicle. They're 5 for 6 with the man advantage in the last two games, and forward Jordan Eberle has three goals with two assists while playing on McDavid's line this week.

'The thing that impresses me most about (McDavid's) game is he always makes the simple play,' Eberle said.

Though Edmonton remains at the bottom of the Western Conference standings, McDavid's presence has provided some hope. He had two assists in a 4-3 win over Montreal (24-24-4) on Oct. 29.

"If you look at the standings it's pretty simple, we need to win some hockey games if you want to make a push at something," said Eberle. "This is a start."

The only other time Edmonton claimed back-to-back road victories was Oct. 17 and 18. The Oilers have won four straight overall and on the road against Montreal, where they've earned at least one point in the last eight visits.

The same club that opened 9-0-0, the Canadiens have dropped four straight while mired in a 5-20-1 rut. They continue to hear it from a frustrated fan base that's watched them lose five consecutive at home in regulation for the first time since a seven-game slide in 2000-01.

"We feel bad for them,' said forward Dale Weise, who snapped a nine-game goal drought in Wednesday's 4-2 home loss to Buffalo. 'The fans pay a lot of money to come and watch games and we respect them if they want to boo or not.'

The Canadiens averaged 3.4 goals during a 19-4-3 start, but 1.9 in the last 26.

Carey Price, meanwhile, continues to deal with a leg injury that's kept him out since Nov 25. Montreal has yielded an average of 3.1 goals in 29 games since Price went down, and at least four in all but one of the last eight. Its last three opponents went 5 for 10 on the power play.

"The message relayed from up top to us players is that we have to stick together in times like this," captain Max Pacioretty told the Canadiens' official website.

Pacioretty leads all Montreal forwards with 37 points, but his assist Wednesday snapped a five-game point drought.

Grinding forward Zack Kassian, who has a goal with an assist in two games, faces the Canadiens for the first time since they traded him to Edmonton on Dec. 28. Kassian was suspended and placed in Stage 2 of the Substance Abuse and Behavioral Health Program (SABH) of the NHL and the NHLPA after he was injured in a car accident in Montreal prior to the start of this season.
