Inside the Paint - Thursday
January 28, 2016

This week in the Association started with some great back-and-forth action at the betting counter but the last two days has been nothing but easy ‘chalk’ winners, with favorites going 15-1 straight up and 11-5 against the spread.

Last night’s card saw watched the three heavyweights of the NBA cover as the Cavaliers (-18), Spurs (-9.5) and Warriors (-18) connected.

Since Sunday, favorites are 22-7 SU and 17-12 ATS while the ‘over’ has gone 16-13.

Thursday’s card features six games on tap, including the weekly TNT double-header.

Some of the lines are tight and I’d expect a couple of these underdogs to strike back. Below is my quick handicap on the entire card.

Denver (17-29 SU, 23-21-2 ATS) at Washington (20-23 SU, 22-21 ATS)

The Nuggets enter this game off back-to-back losses, which includes a 111-103 loss at Boston last night. Denver did captured the cover (+9.5) and it’s been a solid lean for bettors lately with an 8-3 ATS mark over its 11 games.

Denver has struggled on no rest this season with a 3-7 record but it has been competitive at the betting counter with a 6-4 mark versus the number. The Nuggets have averaged 107.2 points per game in their last six back-to-back spots, which has helped the ‘over’ go 5-1. Tonight’s total is hovering around 210.

Make a note that the Wizards have seen the ‘under’ cash in four straight and the offense just isn’t consistent without Bradley Beal in the lineup and he’s ‘doubtful’ for tonight’s game with a concussion. Washington has dropped four of its last five games and the defense (104 PPG) can take a lot blame too.

Last season, the Wizards swept the regular season series against Denver last season, posting 119 and 117 points in both victories. However, Washington has struggled to a 4-9 SU and 5-8 ATS mark versus the West this season.

Washington (-6) has also been less than stellar as a home favorite this season, going 6-7 SU and 5-8 ATS.

Atlanta (27-20 SU, 22-23-2 ATS) at Indiana (23-22 SU, 23-22 ATS)

This is a very tough game to pick and the opening line, Indiana -2 ½, tells you that the game is practically even. Both clubs enter this game off home losses and coincidentally each team lost to the Clippers at home after long road trips.

Indiana point guard George Hill returned from injury last Saturday but he still looks rusty and I’m hesitant to back this team until backup PG Rodney Stuckey returns. Since he’s been out, the Pacers have gone 1-6 both SU and ATS.

Including last night’s 85-83 loss to Los Angeles, the Hawks are 1-3 in their last four the three setbacks came by a combined eight points. The Hawks are a respectable 7-4 SU (5-6 ATS) in back-to-back spots this season but that record is very misleading. Atlanta is 6-0 at home on zero days rest but just 1-4 on the road and that lone win came versus Houston, who blew a huge lead to the Hawks.

These teams met in late December from Indiana and the Pacers captured a 93-87 victory as 1 ½-point home favorites. Prior to that setback, Atlanta had won and covered three straight against Indiana.

The total seems a tad high at 203 ½ just based on form, with Indiana (6-1) and Atlanta (4-1) bringing strong ‘under’ leans into this game.

Milwaukee (20-27 SU, 25-22 ATS) at Memphis (26-20 SU, 21-24-1 ATS)

Head coach Jason Kidd returned to the Bucks on Tuesday and the team responded with a 107-100 win over the Magic and they actually managed to cover as five-point favorites due to another Magic collapse. Without Kidd, assistant Joe Prunty guided the team to a respectable 8-9 SU and 10-7 ATS mark and that included notable wins over the Bulls, Hawks, Heat and Mavericks.

Based on this year’s ratings, Memphis is certainly in the same class with that quartet but down from previous years. The Grizzlies have won five of six and seven of their last nine games yet they’re not getting as much respect by the oddsmakers, and a lot of that has to with their defense.

The Grizzlies are allowing 99 points per game, compared to 95.2 PPG the two previous seasons. Everybody is a little older now and you have a lot of new faces on the court. The effort hasn’t been great lately and total bettors have seen the ‘over’ cash in the last eight games. Memphis has helped that cause with some great offensive production lately, plus all these totals in hovering in the mid-nineties.

Memphis has owned Milwaukee recently, winning eight of the last 10 encounters and that includes four straight setbacks at the FedEx Forum by nine or more points.

New York (22-25 SU, 27-20 ATS) at Toronto (30-15 SU, 26-18-1 ATS)

Toronto opened as a 9 ½-point home favorite against New York. Early reports have PG Kyle Lowry (wrist) listed as ‘questionable’ for the Raptors and New York could be without Carmelo Anthony (knee) as well.

Entering Thursday, the Raptors have won nine straight and more importantly they’ve covered eight of those games. It’s noted here that the schedule has been kind with the last five played at the Air Canada Centre but four of those victories were by double digits.

The Raptors play great defense and since center Jonas Valanciunas returned to the lineup, the club has gone 12-3 and he’s been a double-double machine recently. When he was out for 17 games, they went 10-7.

New York is definitely more competitive this season but if the shots aren’t falling, they have no shot. The Knicks have won five games this season when they were held under 100 points, 17 when eclipsing the century mark. Toronto’s defense (96.6 PPG) is vastly underrated and that could have you leaning host in this spot.

Despite the Raptors sound defense, these teams have played fast in their recent meetings. The ‘over’ has cased in four straight and seven of the last 10 games between the pair. Both clubs have notched five wins a piece during this span with New York winning the last decision, a 111-109 victory at Toronto on Nov. 10 as a 7 ½-point underdog.

Sacramento (20-25 SU, 22-23 ATS) at New Orleans (16-28 SU, 19-25 ATS)

No overnight line was posted with Rudy Gay (eye) expected to miss for the Kings and the Pelicans will more than likely not have Anthony Davis (head) ready to go tonight.

The Davis injury doesn’t help New Orleans, who was starting to turn the corner after an atrocious start to the season. The team is 3-2 SU and 4-1 ATS in its last five and both losses came by a combined three points.

Sacramento isn’t a world beater but it’s on the cusp of making the playoffs and DeMarcus Cousins continues to wreak havoc on all frontcourts. The Kings have dropped two in a row and the second one was expected on zero days rest at Portland this past Tuesday. Prior to that setback, Sacramento was 4-1 in its previous five road games and two of those wins came against OKC and the Clippers.

New Orleans dropped Sacramento 109-97as a 6 ½-point road underdog earlier this month on Jan. 13. Including this win, the Pelicans have won three straight and four of the last five against the Kings. The ‘under’ has gone 4-1 over this stretch.

As of early Thursday morning, Sacramento opened as a two-point road favorite and its gone 1-1 both SU and ATS in that role this season.

Chicago (25-19 SU, 17-27 ATS) at L.A. Lakers (9-38 SU, 20-26-1 ATS)

Another game where the opener was delayed due to injuries and not for nothing but does the status of Derrick Rose (hamstring) or Kobe Bryant (shoulder) even matter?

Chicago opened as an 8 ½-point road favorite over Los Angeles and the total is sitting at 202 ½. The Bulls have gone 4-3 SU and 3-4 ATS when laying points as visitors this season.

This will be the first of seven straight road games for the Bulls and you have to believe that head coach Fred Hoiberg will press his team tonight, especially since they’ve dropped three of four.

L.A. has dropped seven straight and six of those defeats came by double digits. The Lakers showed some fight on Tuesday against the Mavericks, but still lost 92-90 as 6 ½-point ‘dogs.

This will be the first meeting between the pair this season. The Bulls have won six of the last eight against the Lakers but one of those losses came last season at the Staples Center when the Purple and Gold captured a 123-118 win over Chicago.

While the Bulls are clearly better than Los Angeles, the Lakers have captured six of their nine wins this season against the Eastern Conference and own a 6-10 SU and 11-5 ATS mark in non-conference opponents.

**********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud.......

13) Teams wearing white won 10 of the last 11 Super Bowls; Denver chose to wear white next week, since they're 0-4 in Super Bowl with orange jerseys on.

12) There were a total of 14,073 walks in in 2,430 major league baseball games LY; in those 2,430 games, the leadoff hitter in the game walked 144 times. There were four bases-loaded walks that ended games, walk-off walks.

11) Salaries of basketball coaches at some lesser-known successful programs:
Xavier coach makes $1.2M, Richmond's coach $700K, Northern Iowa's $600K.

10) In the NBA, Houston-Portland-Sacramento have all played 12 sets of back/back games, the most in the league so far. Minnesota has played seven, the least- they are 0-7 in the second game of back/backs, 3-4 vs spread.

9) Under is 110-96 this season in NBA games when a team playing the second night in a row faces a team that had the previous night off.

8) Home teams playing the second night in a row are 52-38 vs spread this year.

7) Nikola Mirotic of the Chicago Bulls will be out for a few weeks after he had an appendectomy; he should be back after the All-Star break.

6) Watching San Diego State-Nevada game Tuesday night, Nevada players did some interesting pre-game drills, one of which was dribbling a basketball and a tennis ball at the same time-- sharpens your hand/eye coordination

5) Someone voted for David Eckstein for the Baseball Hall of Fame. Why?

4) Gas is $2.23 a gallon here in beautiful upstate New York; I am told that down in Daytona Beach, it is $1.72. Lot of greedy bastards here in New York State.

3) Texas A&M's loss at Arkansas last night was 22nd loss this season by a top 5 college basketball team- there were 21 of those all of last season.

2) Kansas hoop coach Bill Self has a career record of 200-9 at Allen Fieldhouse.

1) Happy birthday this week to the great Bob Uecker, the former major league catcher and current analyst for the Milwaukee Brewers. Uecker made himself famous with self-deprecating humor, but he did homer off Sandy Koufax, Gaylord Perry. He once joked that he hit a HR and the other team's manager came to the mound, with the pitcher's suitcase-- Uecker's career batting average was exactly .200.

Inside the Paint - Saturday
January 29, 2016

Cleveland (32-12 SU, 19-23-2 ATS) has a chance to silence the critics on Saturday night when they meet San Antonio (39-7 SU, 30-15-1 ATS) at home in a nationally televised battle on ABC at 8:30 p.m. ET.

In this same spot last week, the Cavaliers dropped a 96-83 decision to the Bulls as 10 ½-point home favorites, which came a day after the club fired head coach David Blatt.

Since that setback, the Cavs have rebounded with three straight wins (2-1 ATS) under head coach Tyronn Lue albeit against the Timberwolves, Suns and Pistons. The offense has looked much sharper during the winning streak, posting 114, 115 and 114 points.

Last night’s win at Detroit (114-106) could have some bettors citing fatigue on Saturday versus the Spurs. Make a note that Cleveland has gone 5-3 SU and 3-4-1 ATS in back-to-back situations this season while the ‘under’ has posted a 6-2 mark.

Playing against the Spurs is a major step up in class and the Cavs hung with them a few weeks ago in San Antonio. Cleveland wound up losing 99-95 at the AT&T Center but it did cover as a six-point underdog.

Including this win, San Antonio has gone 17-3 SU and 13-7 ATS versus the Eastern Conference this season. The three setbacks all came on the road and coincidentally the margin was three in all of the games as well (Wizards, Bulls, Raptors). The ‘under’ has gone 11-8-1.

Despite owning a 12-5 SU and 8-8-1 ATS mark versus the West, It’s well known that the Cavs are 0-3 versus the Warriors and Spurs this season and the recent 132-98 drubbing at home on Jan. 18 to Golden State is what everybody remembers.

Will San Antonio hand out similar treatment to the Cavs after a close call in the first go ‘round?

Even though center Tim Duncan (knee) has been ruled ‘out’ for Saturday’s game, the Spurs are listed as short road favorites (-2) over the Cavaliers. San Antonio has gone 8-1 without the future Hall of Famer in the lineup this season.

This will be the first team Cleveland is an underdog at home this season and fifth time overall. The Cavs have gone 1-3 SU and 3-1 ATS when put into this role this season and the ‘under’ has cashed in all four games.

The total on this game opened at 206 ½ and has dropped to 204 ½ as of Saturday morning.

Along with the Spurs-Cavs matchup on Saturday, we do have six other games slated and below is my quick handicap.

Golden State at Philadelphia (NBATV, 5:00 p.m. ET): The Warriors and 76ers will partake in this week’s “Global Game” and while I’d normally think the time change could screw up a team, this is Golden State. The 76ers actually gave the Warriors a game at home last season and only lost 89-84 as 16-point ‘dogs. The spread is a tad higher (GSW -17 ½) this time around and this will the highest total (218) that Philadelphia has seen all season.

Detroit at Toronto: This is a really good matchup and it will be the first meeting between the pair this season. Last year, they split the four-game series with each club stealing one victory on the road. The Raptors enter this game with a 10-game winning streak (8-2 ATS) and they’re catching Detroit on no rest. Stan Van Gundy’s team is 3-6 SU and 3-5-1 ATS in B2B games and that includes a dreadful 0-6 and 0-5-1 ATS mark as visitors. Total bettors should note that the ‘over’ has gone 8-2 in the last 10 meetings in this series, and that includes four easy shootouts last season. Saturday’s number is 203 ½ and Toronto is a 7 ½-point favorite.

Brooklyn at New Orleans: Possible trap game for the Pelicans, who have won and covered six of their last eight. Thursday’s 114-105 home win over Sacramento was impressive since New Orleans was short-handed (Tyreke Evans, Anthony Davis) but when the Pelicans hit their shots, they can play with anybody. The offense is on a roll, averaging 110.9 PPG during this run and that’s helped the ‘over’ go 7-1. Why is the game a trap? The Nets aren’t the same without Jarret Jack at point guard but they still have a few pros and you just never know. Brooklyn is playing on no rest and it’s struggled to a 2-6 mark (5-3 ATS) in this role. Keep an eye on the latest injury report since Evans and Davis are both listed as ‘questionable’ for Saturday.

Denver at Indiana: These teams played a wild game two weeks ago in Denver and the Nuggets captured a 129-126 win over the Pacers as 2 ½-point home underdogs. Denver has played well against Indiana recently, winning eight of the last 10 encounters and three of the last four on the road. The Nuggets have been in great form at the betting counter recently, going 8-2 versus the number despite a 5-5 record. Head coach Mike Malone has the team playing fast and they’ve developed some nice young players. Indiana snapped out of its funk Thursday with a double-digit win over Atlanta and it will be trying to win back-to-back games for the first time in three weeks on Saturday. Indiana is listed as an eight-point favorite and that seems high, probably for the right reason. The total is 208 ½.

Sacramento at Memphis: I talked about the Grizzlies in Thursday’s edition of ITP and how their power ratings were down this season but they silenced the oddsmakers again with another victory. Memphis has quietly won eight of its last 10 games and it’s covered six of them, but a few of those tickets were very fortunate to cash. The Kings are acting like the Kings again and they enter this game on a three-game losing skid both SU and ATS. Since losing a tough 129-128 double overtime loss on Monday to the Hornets at home, Sacramento has looked awful in its next two games. This is the last game of their road trip and the Kings confidence might not be high for this tip knowing that they’re just 1-9 in their previous 10 meetings against the Grizzlies. Once again, the line on Memphis (-2 ½) seems super short and the total (203 ½) can be considered low for Sacramento’s pace. Rudy Gay is expected to play for the Kings.

Washington at Houston: The Rockets (-3) are short favorites and that tells you that the Wizards will have a shot to win this game but can you really trust either team? Washington is 1-5 both SU and ATS in its last six and I’m surprised they haven’t changed coaches yet, something Houston has done. That hasn’t made a difference for the Rockets either and they enter this game off back-to-back losses, which includes Friday’s 116-108 loss at Oklahoma City. The Rockets are 5-6 SU and 4-7 ATS on zero days rest and that includes a 2-2 mark at home. In those four games, the ‘over’ cashed in all four and I’d probably lean to the high side in this game with two weak defensive units on the court. Houston defeated Washington 109-103 on Dec. 9 as a 4 ½-point road favorite on Dec. 9 and the combined 212 points barely snuck ‘under’ the closing total of 214.

**********

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here........

13) Chargers will play the 2016 season in San Diego; it remains to be seen where their permanent home will be, but this keeps the Raiders in limbo and gives the Rams LA to themselves, at least for next season- they'll share the Coliseum with USC. San Diego is the 8th-largest city in America; they're going to have an NFL team, whether it is the Chargers or someone else which plays into the Spanos family's decision to keep that door open. Not sure if the NFL would approve the Raiders going to Las Vegas.

12) Over last 15 years, penalties called in NFL playoff games are 18% less than in the regular season, confirming our suspicions that referee supervisors micromanage their employees so badly it makes the game less fun to watch-- too many penalties.

11) Player on the NHL's Calgary Flames cross-checked a linesman during a game and is suspended- he's lucky if they don't suspend him for a year for such a blatant try to injure.an official. Doesn't this genius realize the games are televised and they show replays of things that happen? He should be suspended just for being stupid.

10) Paul Allen owns the Seahawks and Trailblazers; he is worth around $18B, and is said to be a good guy. Recently his yacht tore up 14,000 square feet of protected coral reef in the Cayman Islands-- he will be fined $600K, which is like fining me $25.

9) Player on Manhattan got a technical foul for flopping, after the refs looked at an instant replay of the incident, where the Manhattan player acted like he got whacked in the head by the Iona guy who had the ball. First time I've seen a defender given a technical foul for faking it since back when I was in high school in the mid-70's.

8) Golden State is a 17.5-point road favorite at Philly today, most an NBA visitor has been favored by since Miami was a 17-point favorite in New Orleans on April 2, 2008. Warriors are 14-7-1 as a road favorite this year.

7) College football signing day is Wednesday, so you'll see coaches getting contract extensions, to reassure recruits the coach will be there throughout their playing days. Brian Kelly (ND) and Kyle Whittingham (Utah) got extensions late this week.

6) Laker GM Mitch Kupchak's son is a freshman at UCSB, where he's started the last ten games for the Gauchos. Quite a compliment for a program if the GM of an NBA team sends his kid to play for you. UCSB is struggling this year, but has been a perennial upper-division team in the Big West.

5) Barry Trotz was the coach of the Nashville Predators for 15 years, a really long time for a guy to coach the same pro team. This weekend he is back in Nashville as a coach in the NHL All-Star Game. He wouldn't be human if he didn't feel at least a little more satisfaction because the game is in Tennessee.

4) How much time and effort goes into choosing which color tie a candidate wears during one of these Presidential debates? There have to be consultants for that, right?

3) One of the anchors on CNN or MSNBC this week signed off for the hour by saying, "Don't forget to friend us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter". Somehow, and this will make me sound old, I'm sure, but I can't picture Walter Cronkite or Tom Brokaw ever saying that. I could be wrong.......

2) Susan Sarandon introduced Bernie Sanders at a rally in Iowa this week; if you told me to guess how far apart in age those two are, I would've missed badly. Sanders is 74; Ms Sarandon is the most attractive 69-year old woman on the planet.

1) One of my pet peeves is when people say "I can't write". Everyone can write; if you can talk, you can write. People get intimidated by the keyboard and the computer screen. if you get writer's block, take a tape recorder and talk into it. Tell stories, make lists, just talk. then transcribe the tape and, voila-- you've written!!!!
