Preview: Cavaliers (27-10) at Rockets (21-19)
Date: January 15, 2016 9:30 PM EDT

The Cleveland Cavaliers were nearly up to the challenge at one of the NBA's most difficult venues. The next one doesn't figure to be easy, either.

The Cavaliers close out their longest trip of the season in a city where they haven't won in nearly 10 years when they visit the rolling Houston Rockets on Friday night.

Cleveland (27-10) had visions of handing San Antonio its first regular-season home loss in 10 months after jumping out to a 15-point first-quarter advantage and leading by three early in the fourth, but couldn't quite hold on in Thursday's 99-95 loss that snapped an eight-game winning streak. The victory was the Spurs' 32nd straight at home since an overtime loss to the Cavaliers on March 12.

The Cavaliers shot 59.1 percent during a 32-point opening quarter but couldn't keep that pace as the Spurs' league-best defense stiffened down the stretch, limiting Cleveland to 8 of 22 shooting over the final 11-plus minutes.

'They did a good job of taking us out of our sets, but we also had some really good looks that didn't go down for us,' said LeBron James, who finished with 22 points but had just eight in the second half.

Cleveland also committed 18 turnovers, its highest total since Dec. 17.

"Having 18 turnovers for 19 points against this team, who executes so well and don't make many mistakes themselves, we've got to take care of the ball a little bit more," James said.

The Cavaliers now attempt to regroup and shake off any lingering fatigue as they conclude a six-game trek with a third game in four days. They'll also be working against history in Friday's matchup, as they've lost eight straight in Houston since a 104-102 overtime victory on March 26, 2006, and 23 of their last 26 there.

James had 37 points in the Cavaliers' last visit to Toyota Center on March 1, but missed two free throws in the final seconds of overtime in a 105-103 loss.

Houston (21-19) has won 10 of 12 at home and a season-high five straight overall after fending off determined Minnesota 107-104 on Wednesday to move two games above .500 for the first time this season.

'I think we would have let this game slip away (early in the season)," guard James Harden said. "But no matter how bad we struggled, especially in the first three quarters, we locked in and we got stops when we needed to and we just scored."

An improved defense has helped trigger the Rockets' turnaround, as they're yielding 96.6 points per game during the win streak after allowing 116.5 in losing their previous four. They'll likely need that trend to continue to earn a seventh consecutive win in the series, as the Cavaliers are 19-2 when scoring 100 or more.

Houston also overcame a 7 of 30 performance from 3-point range against the Timberwolves, a departure from its recent form. The Rockets shot 43.0 percent from beyond the arc over their previous nine games.

Patrick Beverley went 17 of 27 over the first eight of that stretch before sitting out Wednesday's game for a personal matter.

Cleveland's J.R. Smith is also shooting well, having gone 27 of 54 from 3 over a six-game run in which he's averaged 19.5 points.

MINNESOTA TIMBERWOLVES (12-28) at OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER (28-12)

Tip-off: Friday, 7:00 p.m. ET
Sportsbook.ag Line: Oklahoma City -14.5

The Thunder will be going for their third straight victory when they host the Timberwolves on Friday.

The Timberwolves have really struggled recently, losing their eighth straight game in a 107-104 defeat in Houston on Wednesday. The eight-game losing streak that Minnesota is currently on is the longest active streak in the league. The Thunder, meanwhile, defeated the Mavericks 108-89 on Wednesday night. Oklahoma City has now won two straight games and is 8-2 in its past 10 as well.

These two teams met on Tuesday night and the Thunder won that game 101-96 as 10.5-point favorites in Minnesota. In the past 10 meetings between these teams, Oklahoma City is 8-2 SU but the teams have split victories ATS. Three of the past five meetings have gone Under the total. One thing working in Minnesota’s favor is the fact that the team is 11-5 ATS as an away underdog this season. The Thunder also happen to be one of the league’s worst teams ATS, going 15-24-1 on the season. Both teams will be coming into this game at close to full strength, so injuries likely won’t play a major factor in determining the outcome of this one.

The Timberwolves have been one of the worst teams in the league this season, but they are still getting some excellent play out of SF Andrew Wiggins (20.8 PPG) and C Karl-Anthony Towns (15.7 PPG, 9.4 RPG, 1.7 BPG). Wiggins has been on fire recently, averaging 23.4 PPG and 1.0 SPG over the past five games. He had 28 in a loss to Houston on Wednesday night and 22 against this same Thunder team on Tuesday. He should be able to find some similar success in this one.

Towns has also been excellent, averaging 13.0 PPG and 13.0 RPG over the past two contests. He had a double-double (14 points, 10 boards) when the Timberwolves faced the Thunder two games ago and Minnesota will certainly be pounding the ball inside to him in this one. One guy that would really help the team by having a good game in this one is PG Ricky Rubio (9.5 PPG, 8.9 APG, 4.6 RPG, 2.3 SPG). Rubio was miserable in his matchup with Russell Westbrook on Tuesday, finishing with just three points and six assists in 21 minutes of action. He’ll need to have a much better game on both ends of the floor if the team is going to have a shot at winning this one.

The Thunder were able to win-and-cover against the Mavericks’ B-Team on Wednesday night, as Dallas rested Dirk Nowitzki, Deron Williams, Chandler Parsons and Wes Matthews in that game. Oklahoma City did, however, have to play three quarters without PG Russell Westbrook (24.8 PPG, 9.5 APG, 7.0 RPG, 2.5 SPG) in that game. Westbrook was ejected for getting into an altercation with JJ Barea, but that may end up being a good thing for the Thunder. The team picked up a victory and now Westbrook will be extremely well rested for this game. He had 22 points, 11 assists and seven rebounds against the Timberwolves two games ago and completely dominated Ricky Rubio in that one.

SF Kevin Durant (26.7 PPG, 7.7 RPG, 4.4 APG, 1.2 BPG) was more than happy to make up for the loss of Westbrook against Dallas. Durant had 29 points on an incredibly efficient 9-for-14 shooting from the field and he’ll be ready to play the Timberwolves on Friday as well. He had 30 points when they met on Tuesday and he’ll probably play even better in front of his home fans.

Friday's Tip Sheet
January 15, 2016

Wizards at Pacers – 7:05 PM EST

Washington (18-19 SU, 20-17 ATS) have been the ultimate roller-coaster team in the NBA this season. The Wizards recently lost three straight games at the Verizon Center prior to winning three in a row, as the offense has busted the 105-point mark in each of these victories. Guard Bradley Beal returned from a 16-game absence to score 11 points off the bench in Wednesday’s 106-101 victory over Milwaukee, but the former University of Florida standout will likely sit tonight. Washington is looking to avenge a 123-106 home loss to Indiana back in November as the Pacers drilled 19 three-pointers in the win.

The Pacers (22-17 SU, 22-17 ATS) hit the road for four games after tonight’s contest, as Indiana looks to bounce back from Wednesday’s 103-94 setback at Boston. Since losing to Golden State in early December, Indiana has won seven of its past nine games at Bankers Life Fieldhouse, while covering six times in this span. Prior to blowing out Phoenix on Tuesday, Frank Vogel’s team had gone ‘under’ in seven of its previous eight home games, while holding seven of the last nine opponents at home to less than 100 points. Since the start of last season, the Wizards and Pacers have cashed the ‘over’ in five straight matchups.

Mavericks at Bulls – 8:05 PM EST

In spite of stars Derrick Rose and Pau Gasol sitting out, the Bulls (23-15 SU, 15-23 ATS) erased a 24-point deficit last night to stun the 76ers in overtime, 115-111. Chicago failed to cover as 8 ½-point favorites, but the Bulls snapped a three-game losing streak thanks to Jimmy Butler’s career-high 53 points, which included 21 points from the foul line. Gasol will likely return to the lineup tonight, but Rose is questionable with a lingering knee injury. Chicago has eclipsed the 100-point mark in 13 straight games, resulting in 10 ‘overs’ in this span.

Rick Carlisle’s team should be pretty rested after four starters sat out in Wednesday’s 108-89 blowout loss at Oklahoma City. Dirk Nowitzki, Deron Williams, Chandler Parsons, and Wesley Matthews all didn’t play at OKC following Tuesday’s home overtime loss to Cleveland, as Dallas (22-18 SU, 23-16-1 ATS) shot 39% from the floor against the Thunder. The Mavericks go for the season sweep of the Bulls after outlasting Chicago at the American Airlines Center on December 26 by a 118-111 count to cash as two-point favorites.

Hawks at Bucks – 8:05 PM EST

Atlanta (23-16 SU, 19-19-1 ATS) rebounded from a two-game losing streak by blasting Philadelphia and Chicago with scoring outputs of at least 120 points in each victory. However, the Hawks fell back to Earth in Wednesday’s 107-84 setback at Charlotte as three-point road favorites, as only member of the Atlanta lineup scored in double-figures (Paul Millsap with 20). Atlanta’s five-game ‘over’ streak came to an end at Charlotte, but the Hawks have allowed at least 105 points in five of the past six games. Mike Budenholtzer’s team owns a 3-5 SU/ATS record in its last eight opportunities as a road favorite, while the Hawks are facing the Bucks for the first time this season.

Milwaukee (16-25 SU, 20-20-1 ATS) has alternated wins and losses in each of its last five games, coming off a five-point loss at Washington on Wednesday. Since the end of November, the Bucks have won seven of their past 10 contests at BMO Harris Center, while covering in six of the last nine opportunities in the home underdog role. The Bucks have struggled at home against the Hawks recently, losing five straight meetings with Atlanta in Wisconsin, including a pair of low-scoring defeats last season.

Heat at Nuggets – 9:05 PM EST

Miami (22-17 SU, 19-19-1 ATS) looks to snap a three-game skid on its current six-game road trip after losing to the Clippers on Wednesday, 104-90. Point guard Goran Dragic returned to South Florida and will be out for at least one week with a calf injury, as the Heat were outscored by the Clippers by 21 points in the second half on Wednesday. Erik Spoelstra’s squad owns a 2-4 SU/ATS record against Western Conference teams on the road, but both victories have come in the favorite role at Phoenix and Minnesota. The Heat hope for a better showing at the Pepsi Center after losing by 20 points at Denver last December, as the Nuggets have won two of the last three meetings in the series.

The Nuggets (15-24 SU, 18-19-2 ATS) handed the Warriors their third loss of the season in Wednesday’s 112-110 home triumph over the defending champions. Denver shot just 42% from the floor, but benefited from a 33-of-37 performance at the free-throw line, including 17 made free throws from Danilo Gallinari. The Nuggets are seeking their third winning streak of three games this season, as Mike Malone’s team has covered the number in four of six games this month. Denver has played only four Eastern Conference opponents at home, but three of those contests have finished ‘under’ the total, as the Nuggets scored 95 points or less three times.

Cavaliers at Rockets – 9:35 PM EST

Cleveland (27-10 SU, 16-20-1 ATS) concludes a six-game road trip after blowing a 15-point lead in Thursday’s 99-95 setback at San Antonio. The Cavaliers managed a cover as six-point underdogs thanks to a LeBron James layup at the buzzer on a putback, as Cleveland improved to 4-1 ATS this season as an underdog. James is questionable for tonight due to the possibility of rest, as the Cavaliers have compiled a 1-5-1 ATS record as a road favorite in their last seven games in this role. The Cavs have struggled against the Rockets recently by losing six straight meetings, including a 105-103 defeat at the Toyota Center last season.

For the first time this season, the Rockets (21-19 SU, 16-24 ATS) are at least two games above .500, as Houston is riding a five-game winning streak. The Rockets failed to cover as eight-point favorites on Wednesday night, but found a way to sneak past the Wolves, 107-104 to score exactly 107 points for the third straight game. Houston has cashed the ‘over’ in eight of the last nine games, while performing well in the home underdog role by posting a 3-1 SU/ATS record this season.

Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

-- Iowa 76, Michigan State 59-- Iowa spanked Spartans twice this year; they were so much quicker to loose balls in this game.

-- Tulsa 60, UConn 51-- Why are these schools in the same league?

-- Louisville 59, Pitt 41-- This eyesore of a game was 20-17 at halftime.

-- Rider 102, Marist 100 2OT-- Red Foxes took 46 FT, 36 3's. Wild game.

-- BYU 69, Gonzaga 68-- Second year in row Cougars won in Spokane.

-- Cal-Irvine 58, Long Beach State 54-- Two of the better teams in the Big West.

**********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here........

Lot of NFL coaching news Thursday.........

13) 49ers signed Chip Kelly; the 49er Gift Shop had Colin Kaepernick jerseys on the clearance rack, but once Kelly got hired, those jerseys aren't clearance items anymore-- he is the ideal QB for Kelly's offense.

12) Giants promoted OC Ben McAdoo to head coach, crediting his work with Eli Manning the last two years. I have some questions/comments about this.

-- How much of Eli's improvement is McAdoo, and how much is Odell Beckham? In Philly, Nick Foles threw 27 TDs with two INTs when he had DeSean Jackson on his team. Foles went to St Louis with subpar WRs and he got benched.
-- Giants retained Steve Spagnuolo as DC; his defense was NFL's worst LY.
-- They fired a Hall of Fame head coach but kept the coordinator of the worst defense in the league? Thats either stupid or age descrimination. Or both.

11) Tampa Bay hired OC Dirk Koetter as coach; they fired Lovie Smith because they didn't trust him to hire an OC who would work well with Jameis Winston once Koetter got a head coaching job elsewhere. Weird way to run a $1B business.

10) Philly will turn to Chiefs' OC Doug Pederson as its next head coach. Pederson is the answer to a trivia question; he played QB for Miami in the game that Don Shula became the winningest coach in NFL history, in 1993 against the Eagles.

9) Rex Ryan hired his brother Rob as a defensive assistant; Buffalo's defense was better before Rex Ryan became the Bills' head coach.

8) NFL Network airs a replay of Super Bowl I tonight; 17 Hall of Famers played in that game which ironically was played in the LA Coliseum, which has been in the news a lot this week, with the Rams moving back to Los Angeles this coming season.

7) Hurricane Alex is the first January hurricane in the Atlantic Ocean since 1938.

6) Major League baseball put in a new rule for 2016: every team has to have a full-time Spanish translator. Not sure why you wouldn't have one anyway, as well as have your coaches be bilingual, with so many Hispanic players these days.

5) Dodgers have six people working in their front office who at one time were GMs of a major league team. Thats a little top-heavy, no?

4) Former NBA player Corey Maggette works Big West games on Prime Ticket in LA; he pointed out last night that Cal-Irvine's 7-foot-6 center Mamadou Ndiaye wears low-cut sneakers when he plays, almost like deck shoes. Very unusual; I'm guessing he gets his ankles taped, but you don't see many players wearing low-cut sneakers.

3) San Diego State's Skylar Spencer is a lefty, but when he was shooting 30% on the foul line, it was suggested that he shoot free throws right-handed. He has improved his %age into the upper 50's and looked like he had good touch in Wednesday's game.

2) Pro golfer Kevin Kisner lost three playoffs last year, the first PGA golfer to do that since 1937-- he later won a tournament too, so it was a big money year for him, making $3,567,939. You still make a lot of money when lose a playoff.

1) So far in the Atlantic 14 this season, favorites are 20-8 against the spread.

Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

Six teams that force the highest percentage of turnovers........

6) Texas State-- Despite that, still have #322 eFG% rate on offense.

5) Wichita State-- Shockers getting on a roll in Missouri Valley play.

4) Stephen F Austin-- Won first three Southland games by 20+ points.

3) VCU-- Not shooting 3's as well as they have in recent years.

2) Mount St Mary's-- 4-1 in NEC with only loss in double OT.

1) West Virginia-- Just beat Kansas; visit Oklahoma this afternoon.

**********

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but......

13) So it is January 16 and already my fantasy baseball team has a setback for the coming season. Jose Reyes got into an argument with his wife and was arrested back in October and the trail is starting April 4, which happens to be Opening Day. MLB will make an example of him ansd suspend him, so I guess I need a new shortstop.

12) Yoenis Cespedes is looking for a six-year, $132M deal; the Orioles are offering him $15-18M a year, not very close. No one else seems that interested, which makes me wonder why. Guy has been in the playoffs three times in his four MLB seasons.

11) Wal-Mart has roughly 11,600 stores worldwide; they're closing 269 of them. Is it possible some of these stores lose money, or just don't make enough?

10) They built a new arena in Las Vegas with no parking lot; in something that may or may not be related, MGM Grand and ten other Las Vegas hotels are going to start charging overnight parking fees (less than $10 a night).

MGM is also spending $54M on a new 3,000-space parking garage that will be near the new arena. The new arena is going to help local cabbies.

9) Antonio Brown/DeAngelo Williams are out for Sunday's game in Denver; could be that the biggest winner in Cincinnati last week was the Broncos.

8) Tampa Bay Bucs' coach Dirk Koetter was 26-10 at Boise State, 40-34 at Arizona State when he was a college coach- he was only 21-28 in Pac-12 games at ASU. His defensive coordinator in Tampa will be Mike Smith, the ex-coach of the Falcons.

7) Koetter's hiring gives Idaho State two alums as NFL head coaches, Marvin Lewis being the other one. Wouldn't have guessed that.

6) Detroit started season 1-7, went 6-2 after changing offensive coordinators, and that saved Jim Caldwell's job. Guess they didn't want to make Jim Bob Cooter their head coach, the way Tampa Bay did with Koetter.

5) Colts hired ex-Miami coach Joe Philbin as its offensive line coach. Vikings hired another ex-Dolphin coach, Tony Sparano as its OL coach.

4) Monmouth 110, Iona 102-- Hawks scored 66 points in second half of wild game that ended with near-brawl between teams in the handshake line. Winning is the good news for Monmouth; bad news is that there is no way King Rice will still be the coach there next season-- a school with deeper pockets will sign him up this spring.

3) Mavericks 83, Bulls 77-- Jimmy Butler had four points; he had 53 in Chicago's last game, an OT win in Philly. Bulls are not playing very well right now.

2) One of my least favorite rules in sports is the NBA rule where you can advance the ball into the frontcourt by calling a timeout. It is an artificial way to create drama at the end of games. I hear people on TV now pushing for college hoop to add the rule. Making college ball more like the NBA is not a positive change.

1) If the price of oil keeps going down, how come gas is still $2.29 a gallon at the greedy bastards' Mobil Mart up the road from my house?

Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

-- Get well soon to ESPN's Chris Mortenen, who has taken a leave of absence so he can get treatment for throat cancer. We obviously wish him well.

-- Orioles signed Chris Davis for seven years, $161M. Good deal for both sides.

-- Royals signed Ian Kennedy for five years, $70M. Pitchers rake in the cash.

-- Scumweasel agent Scott Boras did roughly $300M in deals in a 48-hour span late this week. 4% of $300M is $12M or so-- pretty good week's work.

-- Tennessee Titans made interim coach Mike Mularkey their full-time coach.

-- Our thoughts and prayers to singer Celine Dion, who lost her husband to cancer this week, then lost her brother to the same disease 48 hours later.

**********

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday......

13) Cardinals 26, Packers 20 OT-- Tremendous drama at the end. Some thoughts:

-- No matter what, Aaron Rodgers is freakin' awesome.
-- Football coaches try to get cute with clock mamagement and wind up looking like stupid people. Sometimes being conservative is the right play.
-- Media has to be happy that the possibility of a trip to Green Bay next week is out.
-- How hard is it to flip a coin? How do you do it without the coin turning over?
-- For the last 24 years, Green Bay has had Favre/Rodgers at QB, two Hall of Famers. They've won two Super Bowls, which has to be described as underachieving.
-- Mike McCarthy has lost seven playoff games, five on the last play of the game.

12) Really a fun day, watching college basketball for 13 hours, except for Cardinal game mixed in there. I'm not sure what the right word is, but it is hard to tell what will happen from one day to the next. Parity-unpredictability-mediocrity?

11) Oklahoma 70, West Virginia 68-- If these teams played for the national title, it wouldn't be a big shock. Really high level game. Kenpom.com has Big X with three of the five best teams in the country-- these two plus Kansas.

10) VCU 94, Richmond 89 OT-- Game seems like it was two days ago, but it was a 2pm game. Neighborhood rivalries are awesome; these schools are five miles apart.

Richmond had a 2-point lead and the ball with 1:47 left in regulation; they come out of a timeout with six men on the floor-- one-shot technical foul. Game winds up going to OT and Richmond lost-- coach Mooney's brush-by handshake with Will Wade was not very friendly. The rematch at VCU will be interesting.

9) Clemson 76, Miami 65-- In last seven days, Tigers beat Louisville-Duke-Miami, all at home. At some point they have to go on the road, but what a week!!!!

8) Notre Dame 95, Duke 91-- Duke can't defend because if they get in foul trouble, they're screwed since they have zero depth- six good players. Irish have now won four of their last five games against the Blue Devils.

7) North Carolina 67, NC State 55-- This is hard to believe, but Tar Heels are 5-0 in the ACC for the first time in fifteen years.

6) Gambling is hard: 76ers won by 25 last night. Golden State lost by 18.

5) Gambling is hard, part 2: Florida Atlantic 63, Louisiana Tech 61-- Tech (-5.5) was up 20 at the half, but lost to the 4-14 Owls. Oy.

4) Virginia Tech 78, Georgia Tech 77-- Buzz Williams has Hokies 4-1 in the ACC, with all four wins by 1 or 2 points or in OT.

3) Auburn 75, Kentucky 70-- This will help Bruce Pearl's recruiting down the road, but his team is really banged-up right now.

2) LSU 76, Arkansas 74-- ESPN has to shut up about Ben Simmons; he is a kid who will be a great player when he grows into an adult, but that is not this year. To listen to ESPN's voices, you'd think he was Magic Johnson right now. He is not, but he will be very wealthy this summer, when he is the first pick in the NBA Draft.

Apparently, Simmons' "high school" team in Australia didn't play home/away games like teams do here; they played in all neutral court tournaments, so Simmons is not used to playing home games where fans root like hell for you, or road games, where fans work like hell to distract you or irritate you. He is learning a lot this year.

1) This college basketball season is summed up by this fact: the only unbeaten team in Division I can not go to their conference tourney or the NCAAs, because their coach is a serial cheater. If SMU finishes 30-0, will it put a cloud over March?
