Lakers welcome rusty Bryant back into action

For the first time in nine months, Kobe Bryant played in an NBA game.

It didn't matter that the future Hall of Famer's first shot clanked off the side of the backboard. Or that he shot 1-for-5. Or that he only played 12 minutes and didn't record a rebound or an assist and have one turnover.

Bryant, who is entering his 20th season, hadn't played since tearing his rotator cuff on a routine dunk in January in New Orleans. And on Sunday against the Utah Jazz in a preseason game on the campus of the University of Hawaii the 37-year-old was the Lakers' starting small forward.

After the game, which the Lakers lost 90-71, Bryant told the Los Angeles Times that he felt strong. "I don't feel tired at all. It's just getting timing down. Getting acclimated to that again."

Bryant likes what he sees of his youthful teammates.

"(There's) a lot of upside (on this Lakers team)," Bryant said. "The pieces complement each other extremely well."

Rose will be back with Bulls on Wednesday

The Chicago Bulls expect point gaurd Derrick Rose to return to the team on Wednesday.

Rose is recovering after he was hit in the face and fractured the left orbital bone last week during practice. He subsequently underwent surgery.

"Follow-up (exam) went very well," Bulls coach Fred Hoiberg said Saturday. "They've advised him to continue to let that sight heal, and they think the best way to do that is for him to stay at home at this time. We plan on him being back Wednesday morning."

Rose must refrain from any basketball activity for two weeks. Bulls coaches were meeting with him Saturday to go over Hoiberg's system. Hoiberg was hired as head coach during the summer and conducting his first training camp with the team.

The Bulls continue to hope that Rose will be ready to play in the season opener on Oct. 27 against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

"Everything's the same," Hoiberg said of the timeline for Rose's recovery. "After those two weeks, he should be able to resume full activity. It's just these two weeks he'll be very inactive.

"They don't really want him doing much of anything except walking back and forth, just getting a lot of rest. And not doing anything where he can dilate his blood vessels is kind of what we heard."

Anthony returns as Knicks win opener
October 7, 2015

NEW YORK (AP) Carmelo Anthony scored 17 points in his first game since left knee surgery, Kristaps Porzingis had seven in his NBA debut and the New York Knicks beat Paschoalotto Bauru of Brazil 100-81 on Wednesday night.

Anthony hadn't played since the All-Star Game on this court in February. He had surgery on Feb. 19 and missed the final 30 games of the season but looked good as new Wednesday while shooting 8 for 10 in 20 minutes.

Porzingis, the 7-foot-3 Latvian who was the No. 4 pick in the draft, made two 3-pointers while starting alongside Anthony in the frontcourt.

BAURU:

Ricardo Fischer had 11 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists. Robert Day scored 19 points.

KNICKS:

Newcomers Kyle O'Quinn and Kevin Seraphin both scored 14 points.

FISHER'S FIGHT:

Knicks coach Derek Fisher was involved in an altercation with Memphis Grizzlies forward and former teammate Matt Barnes in California on Saturday, a person with knowledge of the details said. Fisher informed his players about the situation, first reported by the New York Post, before the game.

''I'm here, I'm focused,'' Fisher said. ''It's not something that's going to take me away from who we are or what we're trying to do and I assured them of that.''

KRISTAPS' CONFIDENCE:

Porzingis said before the draft that he wanted to play in New York and was asked why Wednesday.

''If you can make it here, you can make it anywhere,'' he said. ''So if you're great here they love you, if you suck they let you know. So it's definitely a tough place but I love that and you can do all you want talking but you've got to out there on the floor and actually prove that you can play.''

SASHA STARTS:

With Arron Afflalo resting a sore left hamstring, Sasha Vujacic started at shooting guard for the Knicks. He spent last season and most of the last few years playing in Europe and hadn't started an NBA game since making 17 starts for the New Jersey Nets in 2010-11.

SAD START:

There was a moment of silence before the game for Hall of Famer Harry Gallatin, who died Wednesday at 88. He was a seven-time All-Star forward for the Knicks in the 1950s and holds the franchise record with 610 consecutive games played.

UP NEXT:

The Knicks visit the Washington Wizards on Friday. Bauru will travel to Washington on Sunday.

Durant feels right at home in 1st game
October 7, 2015

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) The shoulder shimmy at the free throw line, the one-legged runners in the lane, the silky smooth 3-pointers from the top of the arc.

It's been eight long months since Kevin Durant has been able to put those otherworldly skills on display in an NBA game. In his first game back from the fractured right foot that derailed the Oklahoma City Thunder's season last year, it seemed almost as if Durant had never left.

The former MVP scored 15 points on 5-for-8 shooting and had four assists in 22 minutes of Oklahoma City's preseason opener against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Wednesday night.

More importantly, Durant showed no ill effects from the devastating foot injury that required three surgeries to repair. There was no limping, no grimacing, not even a noticeable shake of his right leg to work off any rust.

''I felt great,'' Durant said. ''I think it was a little different. I haven't been in my routine in a while as far as going to shootaround, taking my nap, getting to the game. So all that stuff was different. But once I got on the court, I felt right at home.''

Durant had not played in a game since Feb. 19 against Dallas. He missed 55 games total and the final 28 of the season, an absence that was excruciating for one for one of the NBA's brightest stars. He had to sit and watch his team miss the playoffs for the first time in five years, then spent the summer rehabbing his injury rather than playing the pickup games that he loves so dearly.

''I know what that feels like to be out for a long period of time and to sit back and be watching your teammates play without going out there and being able to help them,'' teammate Russell Westbrook said. ''So him just coming back tonight and trying to go out there and find his rhythm, kind of get back into the swing of things is always great.''

He didn't practice with the team until it opened training camp on Sept. 29, but new coach Billy Donovan raved about his work ethic and presence for a team determined to return to the Western Conference elite this season.

''He's been really good,'' Donovan said. ''I think he's been getting back his rhythm, so to speak, scoring the ball. He's had some incredible flashes.''

After missing a long 2-pointer on his first possession, Durant got on the board with another jumper less than four minutes into the game. He initiated contact on a drive to the hoop later in the quarter, then really got going during his action in the third.

He hit a 3 from the top of the arc, dropped a couple more jumpers and knocked down a tough, one-armed, off-balance runner in the paint. Just before his night came to an end in the closing moments of the third quarter, Durant got Timberwolves rookie Nemanja Bjelica up in the air on a pump fake, initiated contact and drew a foul, smiling as he pulled himself up off the court.

''I don't force things,'' Durant said. ''I just tried to let the game come to me and play as simple as I can.''

He has always made it look so easy. But the process of coming back from the problematic Jones fracture was a frustrating and disheartening experience. The journey from that game against the Mavericks last February to this one against the Timberwolves feeling like an eternity.

''It seems like years ago,'' Durant said after the morning shootaround. ''I'm here now. Try not to think about the past. I know I learned a lot from that situation and just trying to move forward and continue to have confidence in myself.''

Timberwolves guard Zach LaVine filmed a television commercial with Durant in the offseason and said he is happy to see one of the highest-profile players in the league back where he belongs.

''Every time you have a superstar like that who is hurt, you always want to see him in the game,'' LaVine said. ''Especially as a competitor, you always want to go against him. I'm glad he's back and healthy.''

Westbrook had 14 points, 13 assists and eight rebounds in 22 minutes and Serge Ibaka added 18 points in 20 minutes for the Thunder.

Knicks' Fisher has altercation with Barnes
October 7, 2015

NEW YORK (AP) Knicks coach Derek Fisher was involved in an altercation with Memphis Grizzlies forward and former teammate Matt Barnes in California on Saturday, a person with knowledge of the details said.

The New York Post, citing an anonymous source, reported Wednesday that the altercation was because Fisher is dating Barnes' estranged wife. Fisher filed for divorce from his wife, Candace, in March.

The person said Fisher traveled to Los Angeles after practice Saturday to see his children and the altercation happened that night while Fisher was attending a gathering at the home of Gloria Govan, Barnes' estranged wife. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because no comments were authorized.

Fisher missed practice Monday - the team announced at the time it was for personal reasons - and led the Knicks in their exhibition opener Wednesday night against a Brazilian club team.

''My state of mind is that we have a game tonight and nothing that I've experienced has anything to do with how we perform tonight,'' Fisher said before the game, adding that he was ''completely focused and committed to the team.''

''I'm not distracted in any way,'' he said.

Fisher and Barnes were teammates with the Los Angeles Lakers from 2010-12. The Grizzlies held training camp last week in Santa Barbara, California, and the Post reported that Barnes drove to Govan's home when he learned that Fisher was there.

''We are aware and currently gathering information regarding today's report involving Matt Barnes,'' the Grizzlies said in a statement. ''We have no further comment at this time.''

An NBA spokesman said it would be premature to comment. Asked if he thought there could be legal ramifications, Fisher said: ''I guess we'll see.''

Fisher said he told his players about the situation when he gathered them before the game because he wanted them to hear about it from him directly.

''I'm here, I'm focused,'' he said. ''It's not something that's going to take me away from who we are or what we're trying to do and I assured them of that.''

Knicks All-Star Carmelo Anthony said the Knicks were caught off guard by the news.

''Nobody really knew kind of what was going on - still nobody knows the details of what's happening,'' Anthony said. ''So as a team it was just amongst us to kind of just let him deal with his own personal issues and us, when we come in here and it's time to play basketball, we deal with that.''

Fisher is in his second season with the Knicks after spending most of his playing career in Los Angeles, where his children remain. He said his family decision should show his commitment to his job in New York.

''So as far as that goes, the guys are the ones that ultimately know who I am and what I'm about. They see me every day,'' Fisher said.

''If guys feel like I'm not here or not focused, they'll find that out. But at this point I don't think that's an issue.''

Lee: Celtics very similar to Warriors
October 7, 2015

MADRID (AP) Forward David Lee has played only one game since joining the Boston Celtics and is already seeing some positive similarities with his former team, the defending champion Golden State Warriors.

The two-time All-Star reckons the Celtics have what it takes to surprise people this season despite being a young team and lacking a standout figure like Stephen Curry.

''It's a similar make-up as far as the team, with great chemistry, we have an unbelievable chemistry,'' Lee said in Madrid on Wednesday, a day before Boston's final game of a preseason double-header in Europe.

''Guys on the team get along well. There's not the superstar like Stephen Curry on this team but we do have a lot of depth and I think we are going to be a team that it's going to turn some heads this year.''

The 32-year-old forward said he also sees plenty in common between the Celtics' Brad Stevens and former coach Steve Kerr.

''I'm just getting to know coach Stevens but he is a very smart coach, teaches the game very well,'' Lee said. ''We have such a young team, it's very important to have a guy that can really teach the younger players how the game is supposed to be played and he is similar to Steve Kerr of all the coaches that I've had, that really knows the game and has great enthusiasm toward the game.''

The Celtics, which finished under .500 last season, beat Italy's Olimpia Milano 124-91 in Milan on Tuesday in its first game of the NBA Global Games tour.

Boston finished with a 40-42 regular season record last season and was swept by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the first round of the Eastern Conference Playoffs.

''I'm excited about what we have ahead of us and this preseason is very important for us to come together and that's why games like tomorrow's game (Thursday) is important for us to keep making strides,'' Lee said.

A 32-time Spanish champion, Real Madrid is likely to pose a greater challenge than Olimpia Milano did on Tuesday.

''Real Madrid is a very quality team, so the goal is to come out and play even better than we played the last game and continue to build on what we did last night,'' Lee said. ''We know they are an experienced team that plays well together. We just have to come out and play our style. At this point of the season it's more about us working on what we need to work on versus who we are actually playing.''

Lee scored 13 points and had seven rebounds and three assists against Olimpia Milano. A 2005 first-round pick who came to Boston in a trade for Gerald Wallace and Chris Babb, Lee was an All-Star in 2010 with New York and 2013 with Golden State.

Boston continues its preseason in the United States on Oct. 14 at the Brooklyn Nets. Its regular season debut is at home against the Philadelphia 76ers on Oct. 28.

Lamar Odom found unconscious at brothel
October 13, 2015

PAHRUMP, Nev. (AP) Former NBA and reality TV star Lamar Odom was hospitalized after he was found unconscious Tuesday at a Nevada brothel, authorities said.

The Nye County Sheriff's Department was called at about 3:15 p.m. to Love Ranch in Crystal, Nevada about 70 miles outside of Las Vegas for a report of an unresponsive man needing an ambulance, Sheriff Sharon A. Wehrly said in a statement.

The 35-year-old was stabilized and taken to Desert View Hospital in nearby Pahrump, the statement said. Officials then tried to have him airlifted to Las Vegas, but the 6-foot-10-inch Odom was too tall for the helicopter that was available and he was driven by ambulance to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center.

There was no further word on Odom's condition.

The emergency call came from Richard Hunter, media director for Dennis Hof, who owns the Love Ranch and other brothels in Nevada, the sheriff's statement said. Hof did not immediately reply to a request for comment.

His hospitalization was first reported by TMZ.

Odom, who won two NBA championships with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2009 and 2010, last played in the NBA in 2013, and saw recent reality TV fame through his four-year marriage to Khloe Kardashian.

Kardashian filed for divorce in 2013, citing irreconcilable differences.

The two were married in 2009 in a large ceremony that was taped for the E! network, following a whirlwind engagement that was also filmed.

Some troubles that met Odom before and during his NBA career appeared to worsen after he left the league, and included a no-contest plea to drunken driving shortly before his divorce.

Odom most recently played for the Los Angeles Clippers during the 2012-13 season, his second stint with the team. He averaged 4.0 points, 5.9 rebounds and 1.7 assists playing all 82 games. He became a free agent in July 2013 but no other NBA team signed him.

In February 2014, Odom signed with a Spanish team on a two-month deal but a month later he returned to the U.S. because of a back injury. That April, he signed with the New York Knicks for what remained in the season, but he didn't appear in their final game and was waived that July.

He also played for Miami, the Lakers and Dallas.

Odom was suspended during the 2000-01 season for violating the NBA's anti-drug policy for the second time in eight months. During the 2010-11 season, a cousin he was close to died and Odom was a passenger in a vehicle involved in an accident in New York that killed a cyclist.

Odom played one season at Rhode Island before being drafted in the first round with the No. 4 overall pick by the Clippers in the 1999 NBA draft. He was named to the All-Rookie team and played four seasons with the team before becoming a restricted free agent and signing with Miami.

He helped the U.S. win a bronze medal in the 2004 Athens Olympics.

Born Lamar Joseph Odom on Nov. 6, 1979, in Queens, New York, he was raised by his grandmother after his mother died of cancer when he was 12. His father was a drug addict.

In 2006, Odom's 6-month-old son Jayden died from SIDS while sleeping in his crib in New York.

He has a daughter, Destiny, and a son Lamar Jr., from a previous relationship.

B]LeBron goes home sick, Cavs lose
October 13, 2015
[/B]
CLEVELAND (AP) LeBron James and Cleveland's other four projected starters sat out as the Cavaliers dropped to 0-4 in the exhibition season with a 110-101 loss to the Milwaukee Bucks on Tuesday night.

Greg Monroe and rookie Rashad Vaughn scored 19 apiece for the Bucks, who trailed by three going into the fourth quarter. Monroe had 13 rebounds and John Henson added 16 points and 10 boards for Milwaukee, which is expected to build off a surprising run to the playoffs last season.

James was given the night off by coach David Blatt as the Cavs played their second game in two nights. Center Timofey Mozgov also got a break and the defending Eastern Conference champions remain without Kyrie Irving (knee), Kevin Love (shoulder) and J.R. Smith (hamstring).

James came to Quicken Loans Arena, but the four-time MVP didn't feel well and was sent home.

Mo Williams scored 18 on 4-of-15 shooting and Richard Jefferson had 16 for Cleveland.

BUCKS: F Damien Inglis made his first start and finished with two points in eight minutes. Inglis missed last season after undergoing two surgeries on a broken ankle. ... O.J. Mayo had 12 points and 10 assists. ... F Giannis Antetokounmpo didn't play.

CAVALIERS: F Jared Cunningham, making a strong push to make Cleveland's roster, shot just 1 of 12 and scored six. ... Cleveland had just one turnover in the first half.

TOO LONG: Blatt would like to see the exhibition season shortened to a ''maximum'' five games to give players more rest. ''I think that would be good for the game,'' Blatt said. ''I know that it would be good for the players and I also think it would be good for the fans.''

Bucks coach Jason Kidd is also in favor of a shorter preseason.

''I'm all for four (games),'' he said. ''I think the lockout year it was two and we went. No one complained.''

LOVE STORY: Love hasn't played since his left shoulder was yanked from the socket by Boston's Kelly Olynyk in the opening round of last season's playoffs. Love recently started practicing and Blatt said ''perhaps'' the forward could make his preseason debut Sunday in Toronto.

PARKER UPDATE: Bucks F Jabari Parker has yet to be cleared by doctors to play after undergoing knee surgery, but coach Jason Kidd said he's making progress and looks terrific in practice. Parker, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2014 draft, tore a knee ligament 25 games into his rookie season.

''You can see his body has changed and you can see in practice his voice has changed,'' Kidd said. ''He's talking a lot more. But in our eyes he's still a rookie. He has the Cliff Notes (of being in the NBA) because we tried to keep him around after the injury as much to be a part of the team.''

UP NEXT: Milwaukee hosts Washington on Saturday. Cleveland hosts Indiana on Thursday.

Warriors expect bigger things on offense
October 13, 2015

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) With an NBA title, 67 regular season wins and an MVP performance from Stephen Curry, it would seem it would be hard for things to get much better for the Golden State Warriors.

Not the case.

Despite ranking second in the league in offensive efficiency in what was a dream season, the Warriors maintain they only scratched the surface of what they can do on offense in the first year in coach Steve Kerr's system.

With almost the entire young roster back again this season, the confidence of winning a championship and upgrades to the bench, the Warriors see plenty of room for improvement.

''That second year of that new offense is when things start to really click,'' Curry said. ''(Kerr) always was telling us that second, third year is when you really take off. So if we did what we did last year and we're still learning about the system and how we're going to go out and play it, I like our chances going into this year, too.''

It's not as if it was a struggle on offense last year. The Warriors led the NBA in shooting, 3-point shooting, assists and points on the way to an NBA-best 67-15 record and the franchise's first championship in 40 years.

But there were also bouts of careless play with too many turnovers and too often when things got tough the Warriors just gave the ball to Curry or Klay Thompson and got out of the way.

The Splash Brothers combined to score 45.5 points per game, make 525 3-pointers and had the ability to take over games for long stretches.

''I think a lot of times last year we kind of would depend on Steph to bail us out, depend on Klay to bail us out, and I think that's where Year 2 you get more comfortable with the offense, you learn to get to the third, fourth and fifth option,'' forward Draymond Green said. ''I think that's going to help this team continue to grow.''

Kerr was pleased that his players bought into the message that he started delivering at the beginning of last season that it would take a year until the players would understand all the options of the offense.

Even with Kerr on the sideline for most of training camp recovering from back surgery and lead assistant Alvin Gentry gone as head coach in New Orleans, the players believe the knowledge they gained last season will provide a foundation to build on this season.

''I think this year now we can finally get better at those and add those different layers that Coach Kerr always talks about, add those nuances that when you look at teams like the Spurs, it looks like they've been playing together for a lifetime,'' forward Harrison Barnes said. ''When you add new guys into the system and they get more comfortable, everyone starts to play better.''

Golden State hopes to incorporate new aspects into the offense, whether it's corner 3-pointers from Shaun Livingston and Mo Speights, consistent minutes from Brandon Rush, who played sparingly last year, or newcomer Ben Gordon.

Gordon gives the Warriors a needed shooter off the bench as a former 20-point-a-game scorer who has shot better than 40 percent from 3-point range in his career.

''One of the things I heard a lot of guys say is they want to get better than they were last year,'' Gordon said. ''With most of the team here, the chemistry is already there. And the style of play is just a lot of ball movement. The longer guys are together, the easier the reads are going to be. I think they'll definitely be able to do that.''

Along with newcomers and increased knowledge, the Warriors are also counting on the natural improvement that comes with a young team. Curry is still 27, while Thompson and Green are only 25.

Thompson talked about being more aggressive and getting to the foul line more often. Curry, despite a brilliant MVP campaign, also wants to add more to his game.

''I'm just trying to be more explosive in what I do, create more space with the dribble, getting stronger and trying to hold my lines more when they're attacking the basket and things like that,'' he said. ''I'm going to be smarter.''
