Yankees' Tanaka to miss start with hamstring injury

The good news the New York Yankees received prior to arriving at Citi Field on Sunday afternoon was cancelled out by the bad news manager Joe Girardi delivered at the opening of his pre-game press conference.

Girardi said right-handed pitcher Masahiro Tanaka, who was scheduled to start Wednesday in the finale of a three-game showdown against the American League East-leading Toronto Blue Jays, will miss that start due to a Grade 1 right hamstring strain suffered while trying to leg out a bunt in the second inning against the New York Mets on Friday night.

Indians entering crunch time

After an off-day Monday, the Cleveland Indians will officially enter crunch time. The Indians are clinging to contention in the race for the second wild card spot in the American League. They are competing with three other teams for that second wild card spot.

One of those three teams is the Minnesota Twins. Seven of the Indians' 14 remaining games are against the Twins. Starting Tuesday, the Indians will begin a three-game series in Minnesota. The Twins and Indians will also play a four-game series in Cleveland starting Sept. 28.

The good news for the Indians is they have seven games left with Minnesota in order to gain ground on the Twins in the wild card race. The bad news for the Indians is they haven't played very well against the Twins. Minnesota leads the season series 7-5.

Defense continues to be Achilles' heel for Pirates

The Pittsburgh Pirates are more than likely headed to the playoffs with a strong pitching staff and a deep lineup led by Andrew McCutchen, who having another MVP-caliber year.

They are not heading to the postseason because of their defense.

The Pirates lead the majors with 114 errors and rank near the bottom with a .981 fielding percentage. Advanced defensive metrics do not flatter the Pirates either.

Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said he has tracked every one of the Pirates' defensive miscues this season and analyzed them based on every possible split -- home vs. road, day vs. night -- and the nature of the error (a fielding error or a bad throw). He said he has found "no rhyme or reason" to explain why his team has made so many fielding mistakes.

News mixed on Dodgers' injury front

The Los Angeles Dodgers seem to be taking two steps back for every one step forward on the injury front.

They were without both third baseman Justin Turner and first baseman Adrian Gonzalez on Sunday. Turner left Saturday's game after six innings with a sore left knee and could miss a few games. Gonzalez's injury is less of a concern. He was given Sunday off with a sore back.

"We'll kind of watch him over the next few days, see how he does," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said of Turner. "I don't think it's anything totally new, just got flared up with his knees. We'll just be cautious with him until he's to the point where he's ready to get back out there."

But there was optimistic news on the hamstring front.

One of the three Dodgers sidelined by a hamstring injury -- utility man Enrique Hernandez -- is running at "almost 100 percent," according to Mattingly and will head to the team's training complex in Arizona on Tuesday to begin taking batting practice in simulated-game situations.

That could be the final step before Hernandez is activated and rejoins the Dodgers. He has been out since Aug. 30.

The other two players rehabbing from hamstring injuries -- outfielder Yasiel Puig and second baseman Jose Peraza -- will join Hernandez in Arizona on Thursday when the Dodgers leave on their final regular-season road trip.

But neither Puig nor Peraza are as advanced as Hernandez and remain questionable for a first-round playoff series.

"Yasiel ... is running at about 65 percent," Mattingly said. "So it's a little different story. Right hamstring is feeling good. Left hamstring is still a little tight. So he's doing more stuff."

Blue Jays in good position heading into Yankees series

The Blue Jays and the New York Yankees meet for one last series for this season.

First place in the American League East is on the line.

The Blue Jays won three of four games Sept. 11-13, including a rainout and a doubleheader sweep, at Yankee Stadium and left The Bronx with a 3 1/2-game lead, the same advantage they took into Sunday.

Before meeting the Yankees in New York, the Blue Jays lost two of three games to the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park.

Before meeting the Yankees in a three-game series starting Monday at Rogers Centre, the Blue Jays lost two of three games at home to the Red Sox, who won the rubber match on Sunday, 4-3.

The Blue Jays have lost only two series since Aug. 18, both against Boston.

Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

Westgate Super Contest (1,727 entrants-- prize pool is $2.5M)six most popular picks in Week 1 season record: 5-2

6) Rams 411-- Trap game after win over Seahawks- L

5) Titans 414-- Not a lot of faith in Johnny Manziel- L

4) Cardinals 428-- Arizona covered last six road openers- W.

3) Ravens 476-- Not a lot of faith in the Raiders. L

2) Bengals 499-- Not really sure why on this one. W

1) Steelers 608-- Long travel, short work week for 49ers. W (3-3, 8-5)

**********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 14: Wrapping up an NFL Sunday......

14) Cowboys 20, Eagles 10-- Dallas wins but loses QB Romo for couple months with broken collarbone. As for the Eagles, Demarco Murray has carried the ball 21 times in his first two games with Eagles and gained a total of 11 yards.

13) Panthers 24, Texans 17-- I'm thinking coaches hate having their team on HBO's Hard Knocks in the summer; Falcons were on last year and Mike Smith got fired. Now Houston is 0-2 and Bill O'Brien looks like a nitwit for the way he's handled his QBs.

12) Buccaneers 26, Saints 19-- New Orleans has now lost its last six home games and Drew Brees says he has a sore shoulder. Uh-oh. Jameis Winston ges his first NFL win and no one talks about him. Lot of people talked about him last week.

11) Steelers 43, 49ers 18-- Roethlisberger averaged 13.7 ypa as Pitt romped in its home opener. Tough scheduling spot for 49ers, with eastern trip after a late Monday night game last week. Steelers scored six TDs on their nine drives in this game.

10) Vikings 26, Lions 16-- Detroit is now 0-2; they scored 13 of their 16 points in last 2:00 of each half. Lions were one of only three teams this week to be -2 or worse in turnovers; all three lost. Peterson had 192 total yards for Minnesota.

9) Patriots 40, Bills 32-- Good thing Buffalo hired a defensive coach last winter; no telling how many yards Brady would've thrown for otherwise. Officials in this game probably soaked their elbows afterwards; 25 accepted penalties for 259 yards. I will say this once again: no one pays to watch officials do their job.

8) Cardinals 48, Bears 23-- Arizona ran opening kick back for TD and things got worse from there for Chicago, which lost Cutler to a hamstring injury, then realized his backup is Jimmy Clausen. Cardinals also scored a defensive TD and had two TD drives of less than 50 yards, whiich is the recipe for winning in the NFL.

7) Browns 28, Titans 14-- Manziel wins his first NFL game, Mariota loses his first and we can put his bust in Canton on hold for a while. Manziel hit Benjamin for TDs of 50 and 60 yards, but they did get outgained by 109 yards (+3 in turnovers).

6) Bengals 24, Chargers 19-- Two of three Cincy TDs were on drives of less than 40 yards. League-wide, favorites are 6-8 vs spread so far this week, over is 7-8. Teams that scored a TD on defense/special teams are 4-1, with Chiefs only loser and they gave one up, too. Creating easy points is a huge key in the NFL.

5) Redskins 24, Rams 10-- Washington was the better-prepared team for this game and was dominant for the whole game, except for a little bit of the third quarter, when the Rans put on a brief rally. St Louis badly needs a playmaker on offense.

Pet Peeve of the Day: Rams score a TD to cut lead to 17-9, they have all momentum on their side, but WR Britt, who caught a whopping two passes all day, got flagged for taunting after the TD, costing Rams 15 yards of field position. Shut the bleep up!!!

4) Falcons 24, Giants 20-- Giants had ball in red zone up 20-10, Manning fumbled when hit, then Atlanta had TD drives of 91-70 yards to pull this game out and move to 2-0. Early prediction: Nick Saban to the Colts, Chuck Pagano to the Giants in 2016.

3) Raiders 37, Ravens 33-- Derek Carr is pretty good, now that he has quality WRs in Crabtree/Cooper. Total yardage in this fun game was 493-448; Ravens miss injured defensive star Suggs. All seven TDs in this game came on drives of 80+ yards. Raiders had 16 accepted penalties for 106 yards and still scored 37 points.

2) Jaguars 23, Dolphins 20-- Miami ran ball only 16 times for 42 yards, in what was only game this week with no turnovers by either side. Bortles has turned out to be a pretty good young QB, but they had only one TD in three red zone drives.

!) Packers 27, Seahawks 17-- Its still funny to me that Aaron Rodgers didn't get a scholarship to play football out of high school. Two NFL games this week were tied at half; of the other 13, only the Giants lost after leading at halftime. Last week, teams that led at the half were 11-4.

Monday Night Betting Preview: Jets at Colts
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Andrew Luck and the Colts are looking for their first win of 2015 and are 7-point faves against the visiting Jets.

New York Jets at Indianapolis Colts (-7, 46.5)

Andrew Luck and the Indianapolis Colts are hoping their second matchup with an AFC East foe goes better than the first. Playing at home should provide an added lift for the Colts, who will try to rebound from a season-opening drubbing in Buffalo when they host the New York Jets on Monday night.

Touted as one of the favorites to reach the Super Bowl, Indianapolis fell behind by 17 points at halftime and never recovered in a 27-14 loss to the Bills. "They beat us pretty bad," Luck said. "You don't let one game necessarily define you, but that doesn't make it any easier of a pill to swallow." The Jets turned in an impressive performance in Todd Bowles' debut as a head coach, pulling away in the second half for a decisive 31-10 victory over the Cleveland Browns. New York has won the past two meetings, including a 35-9 romp in October 2012 in Luck's fifth career game.

TV: 8:30 p.m. ET, ESPN. LINE: Colts -7. O/U: 46.5

LINE HISTORY: The Colts opened favored by a converted touchdown and have remained there all week. The total has been bet down slightly from 47.0 to 46.5.

INJURY REPORT:

Jets - WR D. Smith (probable Monday, ribs), CB A. Cromartie (questionable Monday, knee), RB C. Ivory (questionable Monday, groin), LB L. Mauldin (doubtful Monday, concussion).

Colts - LB J. Newsome (probable Monday, hamstring), LB D. Jackson (probable Monday, toe), WR T. Hilton (questionable Monday, knee), LB R. Mathis (questionable Monday, Achilles), CB D. Smith (questionable Monday, undisclosed), CB G. Toler (doubtful Monday, neck), CB D. Bulter (out Monday, hip).

POWER RANKINGS: Jets (+1.5) - Colts (-2) + home field (-3) = Colts -3.5

ABOUT THE JETS (1-0, 1-0 ATS, 1-0 O/U): New York amassed 154 yards on the ground against Cleveland but there are injury concerns over Chris Ivory (groin), who was limited in practice for a second straight day Friday after rushing for 91 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries in Week 1. Ryan Fitzpatrick, elevated to starter when Geno Smith had his jaw broken in the preseason, threw for 179 yards with two touchdowns and one interception while Brandon Marshall had six catchesor 62 yards and a score in his Jets debut. New York's defense forced five fumbles and had three sacks but figures to receive a much more stern test from Luck than Johnny Manziel.

ABOUT THE COLTS (0-1, 0-1 ATS, 0-1 O/U): Luck and Indianapolis' offense did next to nothing for nearly three quarters a week ago and could be without top wideout T.Y. Hilton, who has not practiced this week after suffering a bruised knee that was thought to be much more severe. A pair of veteran newcomers both had quiet debuts with the Colts - Andre Johnson had four catches for 24 yards and running back Frank Gore was limited to 31 yards on 10 carries as Indy managed only 64 yards rushing. The Colts have issues on the other side of the ball with starting cornerback Greg Toler to miss a second straight week while his backup, Darius Butler (hip), did not practice Friday.

TRENDS:

* Over is 5-1 in the last six meetings.
* Jets are 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings.
* Over is 4-1 in the last five meetings in Indianapolis.
* Home team is 5-2 ATS in the last seven meetings.

CONSENSUS: The public is fairly split in this matchup, with 56 percent of wagers backing the Colts at -7.

Weekend Sports In Brief

September 21, 2015

GOLF

LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) Jason Day's easy win at the BMW Championship confirmed what his rivals have known for several weeks now: The Aussie is the best golfer on the planet.

Day's mostly stress-free final round of 2-under 69 at Conway Farms gave him his fifth PGA Tour victory of the season, his second in the FedEx Cup playoffs and vaulted him past Jordan Spieth and Rory McIlroy into the No. 1 spot in the world ranking.

The Australian zoomed out to a big lead by shooting 61 and 63 in the first two rounds and was never seriously challenged after that. His 22-under total tied for the second-lowest on tour this year and was good for a six-shot victory over rookie Daniel Berger. Scott Piercy finished third, seven strokes back.

The win also made Day the front-runner in the 30-man field heading into the series finale at East Lake in Atlanta.

ST. LEON-ROT, Germany (AP) - Infuriated by Suzann Pettersen's call they found unsportsmanlike, the United States beat Europe on Sunday with the biggest comeback in Solheim Cup history.

Paula Creamer beat Germany's Sandra Gal 4 and 3 to complete the 14 1/2-13 1/2 victory.

The event turned after American rookie Alison Lee was penalized for picking up her ball when she thought her short second putt had been conceded on the 17th hole in the completion of a fourballs match suspended Saturday because of darkness.

Norway's Pettersen, playing alongside England's Charley Hull against Lee and Brittany Lincicome, demanded that the referee penalize Lee, a move that left Lee and Hull in tears after Europe's 2-up victory that gave the team a four-point lead entering the 12 singles matches.

Gerina Piller holed a 9-foot par putt to beat Germany's Caroline Masson 1 up. Cristie Kerr had nine birdies in 11 holes in a 3-and-2 victory over England's Charley Hull, and Angela Stanford ended her nine-match losing streak with a 2-and-1 decision over Pettersen. Lee, Michelle Wie, Morgan Pressel and Lizette Salas also won matches for the United States, and Lexi Thompson halved with Spain's Carlota Ciganda.

AUTO RACING

JOLIET, Ill. (AP) - Denny Hamlin vowed to make it to the championship round of NASCAR's playoffs, and nothing so far is getting in his way.

Hamlin stepped up and once again showed his resilience by rallying for a surprise victory in the first race of the 10-race Chase. The win for Joe Gibbs Racing - a heavy favorite to win the championship - earned Hamlin an automatic berth into the second round of the playoffs.

It was a decidedly different mood for reigning champion Kevin Harvick, who vowed four days ago not to be intimidated by JGR's recent muscle and said ''we're going to pound them into the ground'' during the Chase. Instead, contact with Jimmie Johnson on a restart caused a tire rub on Harvick's car. He thought the issue had fixed itself, but his left rear tire blew two laps later and he was in the wall.

NFL

NEW YORK (AP) - Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo broke his left collarbone in Sunday's 20-10 win over Philadelphia, spoiling his team's 2-0 start.

Romo, who was sacked and slammed onto the turf late in the third quarter, said tests on Monday will likely determine how long he's out.

It's likely the Cowboys will have to play without Romo and wide receiver Dez Bryant for a while. Bryant is expected to be out for at least a month with a broken right foot.

Earlier in the day, Buffalo Bills safety Aaron Williams went through a series of tests on his neck and head area and was released from a hospital. Williams was hurt after diving to make a tackle in a 40-32 loss to New England, landing his helmet on receiver Julian Edelman's back and having his head bounce off the turf. Bills coach Rex Ryan said Williams was taken to the hospital for what he called a ''cervical precaution.''

Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler left a 48-23 loss against Arizona with an injury. Cutler was stiff-armed while trying to make a tackle on an interception return and landed on his right shoulder, though the team said he left the game because of a hamstring injury.

Also, San Francisco running back Carlos Hyde was taken out of a 43-18 loss at Pittsburgh because of a head injury, and 49ers coach Jim Tomsula said the rookie was cleared after an evaluation for a concussion.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL

NEW YORK (AP) - Ohio State is No. 1 and Michigan State is No. 2 in The Associated Press college football poll, giving the Big Ten the top two teams in the rankings for the first time since 2006.

The Buckeyes received 40 first-place votes after a lackluster victory against Northern Illinois on Saturday. Michigan State has seven first-place votes. The last time the Big Ten held the top two spots in the AP poll was November 2006 when Ohio State and Michigan went into their annual rivalry game Nos. 1 and 2, respectively.

No. 3 Mississippi made a big jump from 15 after winning at Alabama. The Tide dropped from No. 2 to No. 12. The Rebels received 11 first-place votes.

TCU is tied for third with Ole Miss and Baylor is No. 5. Notre Dame is sixth, followed by LSU, Georgia, UCLA and Florida State. The Tigers receive one first-place vote.

CYCLING

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Taylor Phinney roared to the front for BMC Racing as the team headed toward the finish line, thousands of fans lining both sides of the downtown boulevard created a tunnel of noise.

All that cheering for an American rider leading a U.S.-based team to time trial victory in the first road cycling world championships to be held on U.S. soil in nearly three decades.

The reigning team time trial champions, BMC Racing covered the undulating, 24-mile course in 42 minutes, 7 seconds, beating Belgian rival Etixx-QuickStep by 12 seconds Sunday.

Spanish team Movistar finished in 42:38 to capture the bronze medal.

In the women's race, Velocio-SRAM won its fourth consecutive championship earlier in the day by rallying over the final miles to upstage Dutch rival Boels-Dolmans and its American rider, Evelyn Stevens, by just 6 seconds. The Rabo-Liv team finished in third.

HOCKEY

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) - The Edmonton Oilers signed defenseman Oscar Klefbom to a seven-year contract extension.

Klefbom had 20 points, including two goals, in 60 games last season with Edmonton. He ranked second among Oilers defensemen in points (20) and time on ice (21:59), setting career highs in both categories. He also ranked third among Oilers defensemen in blocked shots (102).

The 22-year-old also spent part of the 2014-15 season with the American Hockey League's Oklahoma City Barons, posting eight points in nine games.

Klefbom has spent his career with the Oilers since being selected by Edmonton in the first round (19th overall) in the 2011 draft. He has 23 points (three goals) in 77 NHL games.

Fever-Sky Preview

Elena Delle Donne's shooting struggles have put the Chicago Sky's season on the brink.

Held in check by the Indiana Fever in the first two games of the Eastern Conference semifinals, the 2015 WNBA MVP looks to get on track in Monday's deciding Game 3.

Indiana limited Delle Donne to 14 points on 5 of 15 shooting in Thursday's opener, but the Sky received big games from Allie Quigley and Courtney Vandersloot to earn a 77-72 victory at home. Delle Donne was just 3 of 9 from the field for 11 points and held scoreless in the fourth quarter of Saturday's Game 2, in which the Fever rallied for a critical 89-82 win in Indianapolis.

Tamika Catchings amassed 22 points and nine rebounds in Indiana's first victory in six season meetings with the Sky, while Marissa Coleman scored two key baskets during an 8-2 run that put the Fever ahead 85-80 with 3:10 remaining.

''Our focus down the stretch was magnified,'' said Catchings, who had 21 points in Game 1. ''We executed offensively and defensively. Everybody zoned in. You could see it in their eyes. The first game we were so tense, like we wanted win the game so bad and everybody individually wanted to win it and down the stretch we just kind of fell apart a little bit."

Chicago ended Game 1 on a 9-3 surge started by Delle Donne's 3-pointer with 2:52 left but broke down defensively Saturday, allowing the Fever to shoot 59.4 percent in the second half.

''Let's face it. You're not going to win giving up 89 in the playoffs,'' Sky coach Pokey Chatman said. ''You have to give yourself a chance on the defensive end.''

Chatman has less concerns on offense despite Delle Donne not in top form. Vandersloot and Quigley are averaging 18.0 points each for the series, with the latter delivering 22 off the bench in Game 1 and Vandersloot scoring 19 on 8 of 11 shooting Saturday.

Quigley also came through when these teams met in last year's East finals, scoring 24 points as the Sky overcame a back injury to Delle Donne to record a 75-62 road win in Game 3.

The Fever got a huge lift from its bench as well on Saturday, with Shavonte Zellous contributing 16 points and eight assists while hitting 6 of 9 shots.

''When she's playing like that, nobody can stop us," Catchings said.

Indiana may need to improve from the perimeter to avoid a second straight playoff ousting, however. The Fever, the league's leaders in 3-point percentage during the regular season, were 1 of 16 from beyond the arc Saturday after going 6 of 21 in Game 1.

Monday's Tip Sheet

September 21, 2015

Baltimore Orioles at Washington Nationals | 7:05 p.m. ET

With seven wins in their last eight games, the Washington Nationals still very much have something to play for entering this final Beltway Series of the campaign, though they’ll still need some help getting to the postseason, being six games back now of the first-place Mets in the NL East. Starting things off for them tonight will be veteran left-hander Gio Gonzalez (11-7, 3.83 ERA), who is looking to continue along on his strong roll as of late. In his past three starts, Gonzalez has yielded a combined three runs across 18.1 total innings, while going 2-0 over that stretch. In addition, he’s racked up double-digit strikeout performances in two of those instances, which were notably his first two such occurrences of the year. He draws -140 odds in this one.

Surprisingly, despite their struggles over the past several weeks, the Orioles also have some slim playoff hopes of their own, being 5.5 games out of the last American League Wild Card spot. At the same time, they still have to leapfrog a few other teams to get there, but nonetheless, they still have meaningful baseball to be played. That won’t be the case for long, though, if the bad version of Ubaldo Jimenez (11-9, 4.31 ERA) surfaces once again in tonight’s series opener. That’s been the case more times than not throughout the season’s second half, in which the former Colorado Rockies hurler has gone 4-5 with an ugly 6.58 ERA and 1.52 WHIP across 12 starts. He’s also been considerably worse on the road this season, with his ERA being more than a full run (4.88) compared to when he pitches at home (3.62). The linesmakers have the line at 7.5 in most places after opening the line at 8.

New York Yankees at Toronto Blue Jays | 7:07 p.m. ET

After coasting to the top of the AL East and solidifying their lead over the past handful of weeks, the Toronto Blue Jays suddenly hear footsteps, with the relentless Yankees sitting just 2.5 games back of first-place in the division. One of the reasons Toronto is in their current position has to do with ace David Price (16-5, 2.42 ERA), who has been fantastic ever since the club acquired him from Detroit at the trade deadline. Price has made nine starts now with the Blue Jays, and all but one of them have gone down as official quality starts. Interestingly, he’s faced the Yankees three times already since joining Canada’s only baseball team, and allowed three runs or less in each instance. For the year, the AL Cy Young candidate has faced the Bronx Bombers five teams, and interestingly he has a 5.40 ERA and 1.71 WHIP to show for it, though those numbers are skewed by one really bad outing in late-April. Regardless, he’s a heavy -250 home favorite.

Those chalky odds also have to do with the other pitcher in this series-opening matchup, that being swingman Adam Warren (6-6, 3.33 ERA), who will be making his 16th start of the season, and just his second in the past three months. Warren was pretty good when he last took the hill as a starter approximately a week ago, when he held the Rays to two runs in four innings and recorded four strikeouts versus zero walks. If you look into the right-hander’s game log this year, you might be surprised by the results. In all 15 of his starts, Warren has allowed four runs or less, and only three times did he allow more than three. The over/under opened up at 8.5 and has already gone down to 8 in most shops.

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim at Houston Astros | 8:10 p.m. ET

While the Houston Astros have been the biggest feel-good story to come out of nowhere this season, they still might miss the playoffs despite having a stronghold on the AL West for much of the campaign. Fortunately for them in game one of this huge series against the division rival Angels, they have their best pitcher on the mound, and in his most comfortable setting. In fact, you could say Astros’ AL Cy Young candidate Dallas Keuchel (17-8, 2.56 ERA) has been the best pitcher at home in all of baseball this year, being an incredible 13-0 in 16 starts at Minute Maid Park to go with an outstanding 1.49 ERA, 0.91 WHIP, and .190 opposing batting average. As a result, his -190 odds are seemingly a no-brainer from the linesmakers.

The Angels faced Keuchel 10 days ago on their own turf behind Jered Weaver (7-11, 4.74 ERA), and they came out on top thanks to the veteran’s solid six-inning performance, potentially making him a solid underdog play this evening. However, the splits indicate Weaver isn’t the safest pitcher to bet on when working away from Angel Stadium of Anaheim. While he’s 4-2 with a 2.87 ERA and 1.18 WHIP at home, Weaver is an unpleasant 3-9 in 13 road starts, while registering a 6.21 ERA and 1.28 WHIP, providing another reasons why he’s a large ’dog in this series opener. The over/under, meanwhile, is 8.

Pittsburgh Pirates at Colorado Rockies | 8:40 p.m. ET

While the Pirates sit just four games back of the MLB-best St. Louis Cardinals for first-place in the NL Central, they also have serious concerns about holding onto the top spot in the National League Wild Card race, being just two games ahead of the division rival Chicago Cubs. Tonight they begin a series at ominous Coors Field, which might be bad news for A.J. Burnett (8-5, 3.15 ERA). While the 38-year-old has been solid since returning from a month-long stint on the disabled list, after missing all of August and the beginning of September, Burnett hasn’t had success in his couple of showings in Colorado. In two career starts at hitter-friendly Coors Field, Burnett surrendered 11 runs (10 earned) in 12.1 innings, good for a 7.30 ERA, not to mention while posting a disastrous 1.86 WHIP. In any event, he’s a -140 favorite.

Those odds might be higher if he weren’t facing Rockies rookie Jon Gray (0-1, 5.00 ERA), who has been relatively impressive as of late. While his numbers on the year don’t indicate so, Gray has allowed three runs or less in three of his past four starts, including a five-shutout-inning performance against the Padres a couple of weeks ago. However, he hasn’t had any success when pitching from Coors Field, as he owns a disastrous 7.88 ERA and 2.00 WHIP in four home starts, while opponents are hitting .391 (!) off the former No. 3 overall draft pick in those outings. That’s why the over/under is up to 10.5 at this time.

Cardinals welcome Reds

September 21, 2015

CINCINNATI REDS (63-85) at ST LOUIS CARDINALS (93-56)

First pitch: Monday, 8:15 p.m. ET
Sportsbook.ag Line: Cincinnati +182, St Louis -195, Total: 7.5

The Reds head to St. Louis on Monday and take on a Cardinals team that has been inconsistent as of late.

Cincinnati has had a lousy season, but the team continues to fight and is playing pretty well lately. The Reds enter this series after having won two games out of three against the Brewers last series and they have now won three out of their past five contests overall. The Cardinals, meanwhile, defeated the Cubs on Sunday to avoid a three-game sweep in the series. St. Louis had won four straight games before the two-game losing streak and will need to be a bit more consistent as we approach the postseason. They should feel like they have the edge in the starting pitching matchup, though, as LHP Jaime Garcia (9-5, 2.52 ERA, 79 K) will take on fellow southpaw LHP John Lamb (1-3, 5.35 ERA, 42 K) of the Reds.

St. Louis has dominated Cincinnati when playing as a host over the years, going 4-2 against the Reds this season and 17-7 over the past three seasons. Not many trends work in the Reds’ favor in this one, but the same can’t be said about the Cardinals. St. Louis is an incredible 37-9 against the money line as a favorite of -150 or more this season. The team is also 21-3 against the money line in home games after six consecutive games versus division rivals over the past two seasons. 3B Todd Frazier (Rest) is questionable for Cincinnati, which is already without 2B Kristopher Negron (Shoulder), SS Zack Cozart (Knee) and C Devin Mesoraco (Hip) for the remainder of the season. For St. Louis, OF Matt Holliday (Head) is questionable and C Cody Stanley (Suspension) is out for the rest of the year.

The Reds are sending John Lamb to the mound on Monday and he has pitched a lot better for the team over his past two starts. In those outings, Lamb has allowed just three earned runs total over nine innings of work. One of those starts was in St. Louis and Lamb pitched five innings of no run baseball in that game. He struck out six batters and allowed only three hits. Cincinnati will be looking for a performance a bit like that one in order to steal this game on the road. 1B Joey Votto (.313, 28 HR, 75 RBI) is 2-for-6 with a homer and two RBI since returning from a one-game suspension on Saturday. He is 11-for-33 with a homer and six RBI against Garcia in his career.

Votto isn’t the only one who has gotten to Garcia in the past though. 2B Brandon Phillips (.293, 12 HR, 65 RBI) is a solid 13-for-45 with two homers and 10 RBI against Garcia and OF Jay Bruce (.233, 24 HR, 82 RBI) is 9-for-41 with a homer and four RBI in the matchup. OF Jason Bourgeois (.242, 3 HR, 13 RBI) could be an x-factor in this game as well. He is 6-for-15 with four doubles and three RBI against Garcia in his career and has reached base in each of the past six games, scoring five runs in those contests.

Jaime Garcia has had an outstanding season and has been one of the best stories in baseball this year, but he has really struggled in his past few outings. Garcia has allowed 10 earned runs over his past 10.2 innings on the mound and was lit up the last time he faced this Reds team. Garcia pitched just 4.1 innings in that game and allowed six earned runs on six hits and also walked four batters. He’ll need to be a lot better on Monday or his team will not have much of a chance in this one. The Cardinals were able to pick up a big victory on Sunday and OF Stephen Piscotty (.310, 5 HR, 32 RBI) came through with a big two-run homer in the win. He has been struggling as of late, but this could be the game that gets him back on track moving forward.

St. Louis is going to need OF Jason Heyward (.290, 12 HR, 56 RBI) to start doing better soon. Heyward is just 3-for-20 over the past five games and he has been one of the best hitters on this team all season. He can’t afford to keep struggling if this team is going to make a deep playoff run.
