Wednesday’s Den: Mid-week musings……..

— I list famous birthdays on here every day, but a special mention today to one of my heroes, the great comedian Steve Martin, who turns 79 years old today.

First time I ever saw Steve Martin was on The Tonight Show, when Buddy Hackett was a guest host; Martin came out with a plant, put it on a stool and did his jokes, saying the plant was a great partner, because he never interrupted him.

I was 11 or 12 years old; my mother always watched The Tonight Show— the A’s had just lost in extra innings, so I was in a bad mood, but during Steve Martin’s comedy routine with the plant, I was rolling on the couch laughing, and my mother looked at me like I was insane, but the man always made me laugh, that was just the first time.

He is also a skilled writer/actor: Leap of Faith, Shopgirl, Parenthood, Roxanne, Grand Canyon; he can do more than comedy.

Happy birthday, sir. Thanks for all the laughs.

— Vikings’ rookie QB JJ McCarthy is going to have knee surgery for torn meniscus; they don’t know the extent of the injury, or how long he’ll be out, but Sam Darnold is Minnesota’s #1 QB for this year, with Nick Mullens, Jaren Hall behind him.

McCarthy was 11-17/188 passing in his first preseason game last week.

— Speaking of quarterbacks, someone posted a sheet of how much each QB is worth against the pointspread, which is also a reflection of who the backup QB is:

6.5 points- Patrick Mahomes
5.5- Joe Burrow, Lamar Jackson
5- Josh Allen, CJ Stroud
4.5- Justin Herbert, Jalen Hurts, Dak Prescott, Aaron Rodgers

— Kansas Jayhawks are #22 in the preseason college football poll, first time since 2009 that Kansas is a preseason top 25 team.

— CFL standings, thru ten weeks:
East:
Montreal 8-1
Ottawa 5-2-1
Toronto 5-4
Hamilton 2-7

West:
Saskatchewan 5-3-1
BC Lions 5-4
Calgary 4-5
Winnipeg 3-6
Edmonton 2-7

— Nick Foles has retired from the NFL, after an unusual 11-year career:
He was 33-31 as an NFL starter for six teams, 4-2 in playoff games.

He is best remembered for winning Super Bowl LII for the Eagles, beating New England 41-33.

Most games he ever started in one season: 11, for the 2015 Rams, their last year in St Louis.

93 career touchdown passes, banked $87M or so in his career. Hopefully he’ll go into TV so we can learn from him.

Famous birthdays, August 14th:
Steve Martin, 79
Earvin (Magic) Johnson, 65
Mark Gubicza, 62

Halle Berry, 58
Mila Kunis, 41
David Peralta, 37

Josh Bell, 32
TJ Friedl, 29
Joe Boyle, 25

— This from the great researcher Sarah Langs: Over his last seven starts, batters have an .097 batting average against Giants’ P Blake Snell, the 4th-lowest BA against a pitcher over any 7-game span in the last 100 years.

— Phillies P Matt Strahm buys a baseball card of every batter who hits a home run against him; he’s allowed 56 home runs in his 9-year career, spanning 311 games.

New York 4, White Sox 1
Juan Soto hit three home runs, now has 33 this year.
White Sox are 2-25 in their last 27 games.

Diamondbacks 4, Rockies 3
Jake McCarthy went 3-5, had a walk-off single for Arizona.
Diamondbacks are 17-3 in their last 20 games.

Padres 3, Pirates 0
Pittsburgh had nine hits but didn’t score; they’ve lost nine in a row.
Michael King struck out 10 Pirates in his six IP.
San Diego is 18-3 in its last 21 games.

A’s 9, Mets 4
C Shea Langeliers is 8-for-8 in his last two games.
Oakland led 7-1 in 3rd inning against former teammate Paul Blackburn.

Dodgers 7, Brewers 2
Shohei Ohtani his his 37th home run.
Dodgers have won five games in a row.

— If the baseball playoffs started today (they do not):
NL: Phillies, Brewers, Dodgers. Wild Cards- Arizona, San Diego, Atlanta
AL: New York, Guardians, Astros. Wild Cards- Baltimore, Minnesota, Kansas City
