Wednesday’s Den: Mid-week musings……..
— I list famous birthdays on here every day, but a special mention today to one of my heroes, the great comedian Steve Martin, who turns 79 years old today.
First time I ever saw Steve Martin was on The Tonight Show, when Buddy Hackett was a guest host; Martin came out with a plant, put it on a stool and did his jokes, saying the plant was a great partner, because he never interrupted him.
I was 11 or 12 years old; my mother always watched The Tonight Show— the A’s had just lost in extra innings, so I was in a bad mood, but during Steve Martin’s comedy routine with the plant, I was rolling on the couch laughing, and my mother looked at me like I was insane, but the man always made me laugh, that was just the first time.
He is also a skilled writer/actor: Leap of Faith, Shopgirl, Parenthood, Roxanne, Grand Canyon; he can do more than comedy.
Happy birthday, sir. Thanks for all the laughs.
— Vikings’ rookie QB JJ McCarthy is going to have knee surgery for torn meniscus; they don’t know the extent of the injury, or how long he’ll be out, but Sam Darnold is Minnesota’s #1 QB for this year, with Nick Mullens, Jaren Hall behind him.
McCarthy was 11-17/188 passing in his first preseason game last week.
— Speaking of quarterbacks, someone posted a sheet of how much each QB is worth against the pointspread, which is also a reflection of who the backup QB is:

— Nick Foles has retired from the NFL, after an unusual 11-year career:
He was 33-31 as an NFL starter for six teams, 4-2 in playoff games.
He is best remembered for winning Super Bowl LII for the Eagles, beating New England 41-33.
Most games he ever started in one season: 11, for the 2015 Rams, their last year in St Louis.
93 career touchdown passes, banked $87M or so in his career. Hopefully he’ll go into TV so we can learn from him.
