Sunday’s 6-pack:
Six players who have scored the most runs for the San Diego Padres:
1,383— Tony Gwynn
599— Dave Winfield
484— Gene Richards
470— Brian Giles
464— Adrian Gonzalez
449— Ryan Klesko

Quote of the Day
“Every single opportunity I’ve had, every chair I’ve sat in, I’ve been able to learn and grow from that,. There’s very real value. To be at a spot at CU (Colorado) last year, there’s the media attention, there’s the spotlight, there’s the NIL, there’s the reality TV show, there’s all of it. It challenges you to think about all the things that are important within the program that have helped me grow as a coach and as a man.”
San Diego State’s new football coach, Sean Lewis

Sunday’s quiz
In the movie For Love of the Game, what team does Kevin Costner’s character pitch for?

Saturday’s quiz
Francisco Lindor is the last guy on the Mets to hit three home runs in a game, in 2021.

Friday’s quiz
Jeff Bagwell is the all-time leading home run hitter for the Houston Astros.

Sunday’s Den: Wrapping up a steamy Saturday……..

— NBA Summer League is in Las Vegas for the next 10 days; you can bet on those games.
Maybe 10-12 years ago, I’m at the Summer League, in the smaller of the two gyms and I’m sitting with a buddy who lives out there. Two other guys sit in front of us, one guy was built like a weightlifter, huge guy in a tank top.
He sits down and starts rattling on about how the casino he was at put out a bad spread on the game that was about to start; Team A had won by 20 the day before, but was favored by only a couple points in this game. He was positive he had a winning ticket in his hand.
One small problem; in Summer League, the best players don’t play every game, the teams need to see all their prospects, so the rotations change from game-to-game.
The game starts, and Team B is hammering Team A; the weightlifter is getting steamed, and he was a big freakin’ guy. We moved to a different seat, to avoid the inevitable meltdown…….
Moral of the Story: Las Vegas casinos don’t put out bad spreads.

— Denver Nuggets first round draft pick DaRon Holmes tore his achilles tendon this week, will miss this coming season.

— Jeff Weltman is the President of Basketball Operations for the Orlando Magic; his father was Harry Weltman, who a long time ago was GM of the Spirits of St Louis in the old ABA, a team with an interesting collection of characters- their radio announcer back then was Bob Costas.
Orlando was 47-35 this past season, their best year since 2011; Jeff Weltman is doing a good job running things.

— There is a story out there this week how Nick Saban leaving Alabama created a domino effect of coaching changes that has reached 46 different coaching changes. 46!!!!
Saban leaves Alabama
The coach at Washington bolts to Alabama
The coach at Arizona bolts to Washington
The coach at San Jose State bolts to Arizona.
And so on and so on; lot of college football coaches are nomads.

— White Sox OF Tommy Pham has been dealt at the trading deadline three times since 2018; there is a pretty good chance this year will be the fourth time.
2018- traded by the Cardinals to Tampa Bay, who missed the playoffs.
2022- traded by the Reds to Boston, who missed the playoffs.
2023- traded by the Mets to Arizona, who lost the World Series in five games.
He can hit pretty well, is a decent outfielder; someone will add him to their lineup, trying to get an edge to make it to the postseason.

Famous birthdays, July 14th:
Ken Willard, 81
Steve Stone, 77
Robin Ventura, 57
Tim Hudson, 49
Erick Dampier, 49
Carson Kelly, 30
Lucas Giolito, 30
Alaric Jackson, 26
Joey Ortiz, 26

— Tigers 11, Dodgers 9 (10)
Detroit tied game with five runs in 9th inning.
Gio Urshela hit a walk-off homer in 10th inning.
Shohei Ohtani hit his 200th career home run.

— Reds 10, Marlins 6
Rookie Rece Hinds has five home runs this week, his first week in the majors.
Nine extra base hits in his first six games, the most of any player in MLB history.

— Rangers 2, Astros 1 (10)
Both teams scored in first inning; game was 1-1 after nine innings.
Loss ended Houston’s 10-game home winning streak.

— Nationals 6, Brewers 5
Milwaukee scored five runs in bottom of the first inning, and that’s all.
CJ Abrams hit the game-winning, 2-run homer in the 9th inning.

— Red Sox 5, Royals 0
Kutter Crawford allowed three baserunners in his 7 IP.
Rafael Devers hit his 22nd home run this season.

— Angels 2, Mariners 1
Jose Soriano put 11 guys on base in six IP, but allowed only one run.
Seattle was 1-8 with runners in scoring position.

— There is no Sunday Night game tonight with the Amateur Draft happening and the All-Star break underway. Time goes by quickly; hard to believe July is half-over already.

1,759— Charlie Blackmon
1,361— Larry Walker
1,330— Carlos Gonzalez
1,278— Dante Bichette
1,206— Nolan Arenado, Vinny Castilla

Quote of the Day
“There are only two options regarding commitment. You’re either IN or you’re OUT. There is no such thing as life in-between.”
Pat Riley

Monday’s quiz
When the Mets won the 1969 World Series, a huge upset, which Baltimore Oriole made the last out of the last game?

Sunday’s quiz
In the movie For Love of the Game, Kevin Costner’s character Billy Chapel pitches for the Detroit Tigers.

Saturday’s quiz
Francisco Lindor is the last guy on the Mets to hit three home runs in a game, in 2021.

Monday’s Den: Wrapping up a sports weekend……..

— Cleveland Guardians took 2B Travis Bazzana with the first pick of the amateur draft Sunday night, the first time a second baseman has ever been the first pick of the draft. Bazzana went to Oregon State, just like current Guardians’ star OF Steven Kwan.

— Three of the top 10 picks in the draft were players from Wake Forest; Deacons were 38-22 this past season, only 15-15 in ACC games.

— Overall, 13 of the first 16 picks were college players, who tend to get thru the minor leagues faster than high school kids.

— There have been eight guys who hit three home runs in a game this season; Michael Toglia and Lawrence Butler both did it Sunday.

I’m in a 14-team fantasy league with 30-man rosters, so 420 players are on rosters in this league; Toglia and Butler are both free agents, as I type this.

Toglia has 34 hits this season, is hitting .197; 16 of his 34 hits have been home runs. Butler is hitting .211 for Oakland.

— A’s closer Mason Miller is taking the Phillies’ private jet to the All-Star Game in Texas, along with the eight Phillies who made the All-Star Game. A’s played in Philadelphia this weekend, so nice of the Phillies to let Miller tag along on the flight to Dallas.

— On June 14, 1974, Nolan Ryan pitched 13 innings in a game against Boston, a game the Angels eventually won 4-3 in 15 innings.

Ryan faced 58 hitters, threw 278 pitches; 278 freakin’ pitches!!!! He walked 10 guys, struck out 19 more. Luis Tiant pitched the whole game for the Red Sox, facing 56 hitters.

— Genius of the Day: Marlins’ OF Dane Myers got thrown out of the game in the 8th inning of Saturday’s 10-6 loss in Cincinnati; he went into the clubhouse, angrily kicked a door there, and he broke his ankle. He is expected to miss 6-8 weeks.

— Famous birthdays, July 15th:
Billy Truax, 81
John Stallworth, 72
Lolita Davidovich, 63

Carnell Lake, 57
Khalid Reeves, 52
Damian Lillard, 34

Tobias Harris, 32
Masataka Yoshida, 31
Ramon Laureano, 30

— Weird Fact of the Day: Of the 35 biggest high school gyms in this country, 27 of them are in Indiana, like the gym in the movie Blue Chips.

— Main Event at this year’s World Series of Poker has 10,112 entries, at $10,000 a pop, so the prize pool is a crisp $101,120,000.

Long time ago, when poker was shown on TV all the time, I read a couple of books, was curious about learning how to play tournament poker. After reading the books, I quickly scrapped those plans; it wouldn’t have gone well.

— On July 14, 1994, there was a CFL game where Winnipeg QB Matt Dunigan threw for 713 yards (713 yards!!!) In a 50-35 win over Edmonton. WR Alfred Jackson caught seven passes for 308 yards (44 yards/catch) and 4 touchdowns.

— Pass Interference penalties drawn by NFL offenses last year:
19- Jaguars
15- Cowboys
13- Bengals, Packers, Seahawks
12- Chargers

— New York Mets are 31-14 this season when C Francisco Alvarez plays, 18-32 when he doesn’t.

— Sometimes you get the idea that MLB has no idea how to market their own product.

The 2024 Futures Game, showcasing baseball’s up-and-coming stars, was played Saturday afternoon, while there was a full schedule of major league games going on. No bueno.

Play the damn game the night after the All-Star Game and give it a national profile, so we can see the stars of the future play.

— If the baseball playoffs started today (they do not):
NL: Phillies, Brewers, Dodgers. Wild Cards: Braves, Cardinals, Mets
AL: Orioles, Guardians, Mariners. Wild Cards: Bronx, Twins, Red Sox

This year's T-Mobile Home Run Derby will take place at Globe Life Field on Monday (8 p.m. ET, ESPN), and the first player to announce he will be participating in the annual tournament was Orioles shortstop Gunnar Henderson. Henderson, who trails only Aaron Judge and Shohei Ohtani for the most homers in MLB this season, made the announcement while mic'd up during Baltimore's Sunday Night Baseball contest against the Rangers on June 30.

Seven star sluggers followed Henderson, and the field is now set for the Derby after Teoscar Hernández also announced his entrance to the event while mic'd up during Wednesday's Dodgers-Phillies game.

Gunnar Henderson, Orioles
Current HR total: 27

Longest HR of 2024: 430 feet, June 10 vs. Rays
Hardest-hit HR of 2024: 112.3 mph, April 29 vs. Yankees

Henderson belted 28 home runs in his 2023 AL Rookie of the Year campaign, and he's nearly equaled that number in the first half of the '24 season. He'll follow teammate Adley Rutschman and make his Derby debut after Rutschman made his first Derby appearance in Seattle last year.

Pete Alonso, Mets
Current HR total: 18

Longest HR of 2024: 446 feet, June 4 vs. Nationals
Hardest-hit HR of 2024: 115.3 mph, May 16 vs. Phillies

This marks the fifth Derby appearance for Alonso, who has participated in each year’s competition since 2019 -- outside of 2020 when there were no All-Star Game festivities due to COVID-19. Alonso won in both 2019 and ‘21 and with a win this year, he would tie Ken Griffey Jr. for the most Derby titles since the competition began in 1985.

Alec Bohm, Phillies
Current HR total: 11

Longest HR of 2024: 427 feet, June 30 vs. Marlins
Hardest-hit HR of 2024: 106.8 mph, June 30 vs. Marlins

Though he's never been a prolific home run hitter -- his career high in a season is 20 -- he definitely has pop. Four of his 11 homers this season have traveled 415 or more feet and nine of the 11 have been hit with an exit velocity of 101.9 mph or better. Bohm has been a doubles machine so far in 2024, but now he'll attempt to up his game just for the fun of it.

Bobby Witt Jr., Royals
Current HR total: 15

Longest HR of 2024: 468 feet, May 21 vs. Tigers
Hardest-hit HR of 2024: 112.0 mph, July 7 vs. Rockies

A native of Colleyville, Texas, which is a short drive from Arlington, Witt will have a chance to make his Home Run Derby debut in his own backyard. After a breakout 2023 season that saw him produce the first 30/30 campaign in franchise history, Witt has been even better this year, earning his first All-Star nod as a result.

Although this will be Witt's first go in the T-Mobile Home Run Derby, he won the High School HR Derby held at Nationals Park in 2018, the summer before he was drafted.
Get the latest from MiLB

Marcell Ozuna, Braves
Current HR total: 24

Longest HR of 2024: 446 feet, April 12 vs. Marlins
Hardest-hit HR of 2024: 114.6 mph, April 12 vs. Marlins

Another player making his Home Run Derby debut, Ozuna has stepped up in a big way for an Atlanta team that lost reigning NL MVP Ronald Acuña Jr. to a torn ACL and has had a number of key hitters take a step back from 2023. The right-handed slugger reached the 40-homer mark for the first time in 2023 and has a shot to do so again this season.

José Ramírez, Guardians
Current HR total: 23

Longest HR of 2024: 436 feet, June 28 vs. Royals
Hardest-hit HR of 2024: 109.8 mph, June 24 vs. Orioles

With the first 40-homer season of his career in play, Ramírez will step into the Home Run Derby spotlight for the second time after participating in 2022. He came up short against Juan Soto in the first round despite hitting 17 home runs.

Adolis García, Rangers
Current HR total: 17

Longest HR of 2024: 428 feet, April 1 vs. Rays
Hardest-hit HR of 2024: 110.1 mph, April 1 vs. Rays

Representing the host club, García will aim to become just the fourth player to win the Home Run Derby in his home ballpark, following Ryne Sandberg with the Cubs in 1990, Todd Frazier with the Reds in 2015 and Bryce Harper with the Nationals in 2018. García got his first taste of the Derby a year ago, losing his first-round matchup to the Rays' Randy Arozarena. He finished the season with 39 homers before hitting eight more -- including five in the AL Championship Series -- during Texas’ run to a World Series title.

Teoscar Hernández, Dodgers
Current HR total: 19

Longest HR of 2024: 431 feet, April 1 vs. Giants
Hardest-hit HR of 2024: 108.0 mph, May 6 vs. Marlins

Shohei Ohtani may be getting more attention, but Hernández has been a strong addition to the Dodgers’ lineup in his own right. Hernández, who will be making his Derby debut, has a chance to reach the 30-homer mark for the second time in his career.

MLB All Star Game Odds, Betting Trends: Everything You Need To Know

Patrick Everson

MLB All Star Game odds are front-and-center, which can mean only one thing: It's the slowest week on the American sports betting calendar.

But at least we've got the Midsummer Classic to wager on. The AL is a modest favorite over the NL in odds to win the MLB All-Star Game. First pitch is at 8 p.m. ET Tuesday at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas.

Does AL Dominance Resume?

UPDATE 6 P.M. ET MONDAY: Since 1988, the American League has owned the National League in this annual ritual. Across 35 games, the AL is 27-7-1. On the plus side for the NL, the senior circuit won a low-scoring 2023 contest, 3-2.

But that was after a 9-0 AL run.

BetMGM opened the AL -115 in its MLB All Star Game odds market and is up slightly to -120, with the NL even money.

"I originally thought we'd take more AL money, based off of that trend. But it's been pretty balanced, with the NL actually taking a little bit more money up to this point," BetMGM trader Hal Egeland said. "It's too early to say who we'll be cheering for. It would only take a couple bets for us to become NL fans."

The total is at 7.5 (Under -115), with action running similar to the moneyline.

"It's still relatively low handle. But we're about as balanced as we can get," Egeland said.

All-Star MVP Odds

UPDATE 6:30 P.M. ET MONDAY: There are plenty of markets on the MLB All Star Game odds board, well beyond the moneyline/runline/total. Alternate totals, inning props, winning margin and a slew of other prop bets are up at BetMGM.

There's even a Yes/No on whether the game will be decided by a tiebreak Home Run Derby. No is a healthy -1100 favorite, and Yes is +600.

And of course, there are MLB All-Star MVP odds. That's the market creating the most early concern.

"The one thing I know for certain is that we'll be cheering against Paul Skenes to win MVP," Egeland said of the Pittsburgh Pirates rookie and NL starter. "He's our biggest liability by a decent margin, and I think that's going to grow quite a bit before he takes the mound."

That said, Skenes is a distant +3500 in the MLB All- Star Game MVP odds market. Sixteen other players are ahead of the wildly popular Skenes, led by +900 chalk Shohei Ohtani of the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The New York Yankees' Aaron Judge is the +1000 second choice, followed by the Philadelphia Phillies' Bryce Harper (+1200) and the Baltimore Orioles' Gunnar Henderson (+1300).

"MVP is a very popular market, especially when Skenes is throwing," Egeland said, before noting one other market of concern for BetMGM. "Like most games, we'd love to get a run in the first inning by either team."

MLB All-Star Game: Analysis, favorite moments from Arlington

The 2024 MLB All-Star Game from Arlington, Texas, is a wrap -- and, yup, the American League is back on top. The Junior Circuit's 5-3 win marked its 10th victory in 11 years.

After the National League snapped an epic nine-game skid last year, it looked like it might put together back-to-back victories. A standout performance from Pittsburgh Pirates rookie starting pitcher Paul Skenes and a three-run home run off the bat of Los Angeles Dodgers DH Shohei Ohtani put the Senior Circuit ahead early.

But the Junior Circuit stormed back with five unanswered runs, highlighted by a two-run double by New York Yankees outfielder Juan Soto -- who came around to score the tying run on a pinch-hit single by the Cleveland Guardians' David Fry -- and a two-run, go-ahead home run by Boston Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran, who was named the game's MVP.

From in-game analysis to our favorite moments from baseball's most star-studded night, here's how the Midsummer Classic went down.

Our favorite moments from the 2024 All-Star Game

Jorge Castillo
: The All-Star Game isn't just about the sport's superstars, the perennial participants who become household names. It's also about the guys who grind and grind until they suddenly find themselves on that stage. David Fry is one of those guys. The Cleveland Guardians' designated hitter/catcher/utility man made his major league debut last May at age 27. He slashed .238/.319/.416 with four home runs in 57 games -- nothing that screamed a breakout was coming. But Fry, now 28, was one of baseball's biggest first-half surprises, riding a blistering first two months to an unlikely All-Star Game nod. Fry was in the middle of the American League's comeback in the third inning, delivering a pinch-hit, game-tying, two-out RBI single off San Francisco Giants right-hander Logan Webb. Fry might never make an All-Star Game again. But he had his moment Tuesday.

Alden Gonzalez: No single moment from him stood out -- just Juan Soto's overall vibe. There was staring down Paul Skenes and later drawing a walk to make good on his prediction of reaching base against the electrifying rookie. There was his bullet throw to second base from the right-field corner and trolling Jurickson Profar for not trying to stretch a double. And of course there was getting a double himself after NL center fielder Teoscar Hernández was too slow to scoop up his base hit up the middle. Nobody is more in on the theatrics than Juan Soto. The game needs more players like him.

Jesse Rogers: Shohei Ohtani's home run off Tanner Houck was a thing of beauty, making Mason Miller's strikeout of him in his next at-bat in the fifth inning even more impressive. Miller has burst onto the All-Star scene with a dominant first half, firing 299 pitches of 100 mph or more. Add two more triple-digit offerings during Ohtani's at-bat -- mixed between two sliders -- and it was the young pitcher who got the "oohs" and "aahs" from the crowd when Ohtani swung and missed on the righty's fourth pitch. Miller -- who also threw a Midsummer Classic-record 103.6 mph pitch to Trea Turner -- would be fun to watch in October, if he can get out of Oakland.

Thursday’s Den: Random things on a summer day…….

— Every kid in America who plays high school basketball should be watching some of the NBA Summer League this week; watch it for a while, then turn the TV off and go outside and practice.
A lot.
It is REALLY HARD to make an NBA roster; Isaiah Wong was ACC Player of the Year in 2023, a third-team All-American at Miami; you have any idea how hard it is to be ACC Player of the Year?
Isaiah Wong got into one NBA game last season; he played four minutes.
This week, Wong is on the Phoenix Suns’ summer team; he scored 7 points in 12:00 off the bench in Tuesday’s 98-94 loss to Indiana, Wong’s former team.
Go outside and practice, kids…….

— One thing about playing in Summer League; you’re not just trying out for your team, you’re trying out for the other 29 teams, who all have their eyes out for prospects.
Philadelphia 76ers have only two spots open on their regular season roster, so most of the guys on their summer team are trying to impress another club, to get an invite to training camp.

— Washington Wizards’ rookie Alex Sarr, the #2 pick in last month’s NBA Draft, went 0-15 from the floor in the Wizards’ 82-80 loss to Portland. In the scheme of things, this might not be such a big deal, but it has to be at least a little bit of a red flag.

— They’ve been calling some sketchy technical fouls in the Summer League; you could hear what was said before the technicals were called- no cursing, not even that many theatrics.

— Team USA 98, Australia 92
Anthony Davis scored 17 points, grabbed 14 rebounds in 18:00.
Americans were 12-29 on the arc
Game drew 12,217 fans at Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi.

Team USA 105, Serbia 79
Stephen Curry scored 24 points.
Game was 40-40; Americans ended first half on a 19-5 run.
Team USA is now 3-0 in its pre-Olympic games.

— Episode 3 of Hard Knocks, where Saquon Barkley bolts the Giants for the division rival Eagles; two quick impressions.
Giants’ owner John Mara made it clear he wouldn’t be happy if Barkley went to the Giants’ rivals in Philadelphia, which is exactly what happened. Whoops.
Giants’ GM Joe Schoen asked Barkley if he would be willing to take $1M or so less from the Giants than the Eagles, with the inference that if he did, he’d eventually be inducted into the team’s Ring of Honor. Was surprised to hear him say that.

— Fresno State football coach Jeff Tedford stepped down due to health issues; he went 45-22 in two stints at his alma mater, but he’s had recurring health problems. Fresno will have an interim coach this season.
Tedford was Aaron Rodgers’ coach at Cal; he was also a head coach in the CFL. We wish him a speedy recovery.

— Edmonton Elks fired coach/GM Chris Jones after an 0-5 start; Edmonton was 8-33 in Jones’ tenure running the club.

Movie of the Day– Absence of Malice (1981)- A prosecutor leaks to a news reporter that a liquor wholesaler is suspected in the murder of local longshoreman, the wholesaler’s life begins to unravel, until he fights back.
Paul Newman, Sally Field; two of our greatest actors, with an appearance by Wilford Brimley in the key scene at the end of the movie. Movie was made 43 years ago, but it still holds up- I was glad to find it the other night.

Baseball thoughts…….

— The All-Star uniforms were horrendous, to be kind; they need to go back to when the players wore their teams’ uniforms.

— Teoscar Hernandez is the first LA Dodger to win the Home Run Derby.

— Cincinnati rookie Rece Hinds won Player of the Week in his first week as a major leaguer, which is pretty impressive.

— One of the most surprising things this baseball season is how Cubs P Shota Imanaga has been a much better pitcher Dodgers’ free agent P Yoshinobu Yamamoto.
During spring training, NO ONE, not one person, thought that was going to happen.

— P Domingo German exercised an opt-out clause in his contract, was released by Pittsburgh. He was 4-4, 5.35 in ten starts for the Pirates’ AAA team.

— If the baseball playoffs started today (they don’t):
NL: Phillies, Brewers, Dodgers. Wild Card: Braves, Cardinals, Mets
AL: Orioles, Guardians, Mariners. Wild Card: Bronx, Twins, Red Sox
