Interleague action producing crazy MLB betting totals trend

The Detroit Tigers have played Over the total in all six of their interleague tilts heading into a series with the Nationals this week.

Interleague baseball has lost some of its shine in recent years, thanks to the MLB schedule randomly sprinkling in American League vs. National League contests throughout the season.

It used to be, the schedule makers would designate certain weeks of the season to interleague and interleague alone, giving baseball bettors something different to look forward to in the middle of the marathon major league season. Now, interleague play is as common as peanuts and crackerjack at the ballpark.

But for those still tracking the individual numbers and trends coming out of these AL-versus-NL battles, a stunning Over/Under development has manifested itself through the first month and a bit of the schedule.

Heading into Monday’s MLB slate – which features two interleague tilts (Detroit at Washington and Toronto at San Francisco) – the Over is 24-14-5 when the Junior and Senior Circuits collide, topping the total 65 percent of the time.

This hasn’t always been the case. Looking back over the past five MLB seasons (2011 to 2015), interleague action finished with a 706-790-67 Over/Under record with 9.09 combined runs scored versus an average betting total of 8.17. And those totals have taken a sharp drop in the past three seasons, moving from 8.61 in 2011 to 8.51 in 2012, 8.27 in 2013, 7.75 in 2014 and 2015, and just under 8.0 this season.

The biggest producers of this current Over trend have been National League clubs at home versus American League foes, a situation that has manufactured a 12-5-3 Over/Under record – 70.5 percent - so far this season. There have been an average of 9.19 combined runs scored against an average total of 7.66 in those contests, compared to the major league season scoring average of 8.5 runs.

More than a few National League teams have been Over gold mines during interleague play. The Milwaukee Brewers stand at 7-1-2 O/U versus AL opposition, while the Pittsburgh Pirates (4-0-0 O/U) and Washington Nationals (4-2 O/U) have also leaned toward high-scoring interleague finishes.

In the American League, the Detroit Tigers are 6-0-0 Over/Under, joined by the Minnesota Twins (5-1-1 O/U) and Los Angeles Angels (3-1-1 O/U) when taking on the National League.

Tuesday's Diamond Notes
May 10, 2016

Hottest team:
Cubs (7-0 last seven)
The only thing that stop Chicago at this point is inclement weather, as the Cubs were rained out in their series opener against the Padres on Monday. The Cubs are rolling with the best record in baseball at 24-6, while coming off a four-game home sweep of the Nationals this past weekend. Chicago is in the midst of its longest winning streak of the season (7), while owning a perfect 9-0 record in series openers. Jon Lester has allowed one earned run or less in five of six starts for the Cubs this season, but his only loss came as a -230 favorite in a 2-0 home loss to the Rockies.

Coldest team:
Tigers (0-7 last seven)
Detroit threw away its second straight game in Monday’s 5-4 walk-off loss at Washington. After squandering a late 2-0 lead to Texas on Sunday in an 8-3 defeat, the Tigers couldn’t hold a 4-1 advantage in last night’s setback to drop to 1-7 this month. Detroit suffered only its second loss in seven games against National League opponents this season, while falling to 4-7 in the last 11 contests away from Comerica Park.

Hottest pitcher: Joe Ross, Nationals (3-1, 1.23 ERA)
This Washington rotation has doled out a ton of money to Max Scherzer and Stephen Strasburg, but the Nationals have found a gem in Ross. The right-hander is coming off his first loss of the season to the red-hot Cubs, but Ross has given up just four earned runs in five starts. Ross has compiled this miniscule ERA in spite of pitching his last four outings away from Nationals Park, as he makes his second home start tonight against the struggling Tigers.

Coldest pitcher: Carlos Rodon, White Sox (1-4, 4.36 ERA)
Chicago beat Texas for the fourth time this season in Monday’s extra-inning victory in Arlington. Rodon started the season on the right track by allowing two earned runs in his first two starts, but couldn’t escape the first inning in a 7-0 home loss to the Angels last month. The Sox southpaw is coming off back-to-back losses to the Orioles and Red Sox, while giving up nine runs (seven earned) in this span. Rodon received a no-decision the last time he faced the Rangers at U.S. Cellular Field in April, but allowed two earned runs in six innings of a 4-3 win.

Biggest UNDER run:
Angels (10-4 at home)
The Angels’ offense didn’t provide much production in this past weekend’s three-game sweep at the hands of the Rays. Los Angeles plated a total of five runs in the three home losses, while the Angels have finished ‘under’ the total in four consecutive home games. The Halos are facing their first National League opponent since losing a pair of games to the Cubs in the opening series of the season, as Los Angeles posted only one run in those two losses.

Biggest OVER run: Rockies (9-4 at home)
Following a pair of low-scoring games at San Francisco, the Rockies drifted back to the ‘over’ column in Monday’s 10-5 loss to the Diamondbacks. Colorado’s pitching at home hasn’t been terrific by any stretch, as the Rockies have given up at least nine runs in four of the past five games at Coors Field. The Rockies have eclipsed the ‘over’ in seven of the last nine home contests, as tonight’s total against Arizona is listed at 11. Tonight’s starter Chris Rusin has cashed the ‘over’ in seven of his last 11 home starts, all with the totals listed at 10 or higher.

Matchup to watch: Mets vs. Dodgers
New York picked up where it left off last October when the Mets knocked the Dodgers in five games of the NLDS. The Mets doubled up the Dodgers, 4-2 on Monday to improve to 6-2 in the last eight matchups with Los Angeles. The task won’t get easier for Los Angeles tonight, facing Jacob DeGrom, who outdueled both Clayton Kershaw and Zack Greinke in the NLDS last season. DeGrom owns a 3-1 record, opposed by Dodgers’ southpaw Alex Wood, who is winless in three of his last four starts.

Betcha didn’t know: The Mariners and Rays continue to play low-scoring games when they meet up. Even though Monday’s series opener pushed on the 7 total, the ‘under’ is 8-1-1 in the last 10 meetings. The ‘under’ is 4-0-1 in the past five matchups at Safeco Field, while the losing team has scored two runs or less. Seattle has allowed two runs or less in six of its last eight home games, improving to 6-2 in this span since starting 0-5 at Safeco Field.

Biggest public favorite: Cubs (-240) vs. Padres

Biggest public underdog: Diamondbacks (+110) at Rockies

Biggest line move: Pirates (-125 to -135) at Reds

LEADING OFF: Bruising Pirates-Reds matchup resumes
May 10, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

MORE BRUISES

The Pirates and Reds continue the major leagues' most bruising rivalry. Left-hander Jonathon Niese hit Joey Votto in the first inning on Monday night, an in-your-ribs moment to open their three-game series. With that, the clubs were even over the last four seasons: The Pirates had hit 39 Reds batters, and the Reds had hit 39 Pirates batters.

REMATCH

Miami left-hander Adam Conley is looking forward to his rematch against Milwaukee. Conley allowed no hits in 7 2/3 innings at the Brewers on April 29 before being pulled from the game because he had thrown a career-high 116 pitches. Conley (2-1, 3.06 ERA) followed his performance at Milwaukee with a victory over the Diamondbacks six days later, when he allowed only two hits in 5 1/3 shutout innings.

FIVE YEARS LATER

A couple of first-round picks in the 2011 amateur draft face off in Washington on Tuesday, when Nationals right-hander Joe Ross (3-1, 1.23 ERA) goes against Tigers RHP Michael Fulmer (1-1, 6.30 ERA). Ross was taken 25th overall five years ago, while Fulmer was a supplemental pick at No. 44. Ross will be making the 19th start of his major league career; Fulmer his third.

FIRST IN LINE

Minnesota's Joe Mauer is expected to be first in the batting order for the first time in his major league career Tuesday night when the Twins take on Baltimore.

Mauer's debut in the leadoff spot was supposed to be Monday, but the Twins called off that game because of inclement weather. The makeup date was set for July 28.

The Twins (8-23) will take a five-game losing streak to the field against Orioles starter Kevin Gausman, hoping the lineup shuffle will give them a shot of energy. Brian Dozier was batting third for the first time year, too.

''I'm pretty open to see how it plays out,'' manager Paul Molitor said, ''a little bit curious. I think there's some logic to it, given the fact where we are.''

BEANTOWN DEBUT

Sean O'Sullivan is scheduled to make his first start in a Red Sox uniform on Tuesday night against Oakland at Fenway Park. The 28-year-old right-hander is with his sixth organization after signing a minor league deal with Boston in December. It'll be his first start since last July, when he was with Philadelphia.

STREAKING

Toronto left-hander J.A. Happ looks to win his fifth straight decision to start the year but has never beaten San Francisco, going 0-4 in four starts. He was on the losing end of Matt Cain's perfect game at AT&T Park on June 13, 2012, while with Houston. Cain opposes Happ again Tuesday night, this time searching for his first win of 2016 after beginning 0-4.

TRYING TO REBOUND 1

Texas left-hander Derek Holland faces the AL Central-leading Chicago White Sox in his first start since allowing 11 runs and 11 hits in 2 2/3 innings in a 12-2 loss at Toronto. The rough outing sent his ERA from 2.48 to 5.40.

TRYING TO REBOUND 2

Kansas City right-hander Kris Medlen (1-3, 6.85 ERA) starts at the New York Yankees against Masahiro Tanaka on Tuesday night and will try avoid what would be four consecutive losing starts for the first time in his big league career. Medlen lasted only two-plus innings in a 13-2 loss to Washington, when the first six batters he faced all scored and he didn't manage an out until his 38th pitch. He has faced the Yankees four times, all in relief, but not since 2012 with Atlanta.

CONSISTENCY

Cubs lefty Jon Lester faces San Diego seeking to continue a much better start than his first in Chicago a year ago, when he was 0-2 with a 6.23 ERA after four starts. Lester (3-1, 1.58) faces San Diego as one of the many key contributors to the Cubs' 24-6 start. Catcher David Ross said the key has been his cutter, which ''was non-existent for the first month and a half to two months of the season last year. And that's one of his best pitches. He's been sharp.''

Red Sox 3B Sandoval talks about doubters after surgery
May 9, 2016

BOSTON (AP) Red Sox third baseman Pablo Sandoval feels his season-ending shoulder surgery should answer any lingering questions about his time on the disabled list.

Questions about his play and fitness will have to wait until next year.

''Finally got it done,'' he said before Boston opened a series against Oakland on Monday night.

''Now focused to get back and doing everything right,'' he said. ''You have to be healthy to go out there and do it. I know in my mind what I have learned. People said I was faking. I didn't fake at all because I proved that I can play through pain.''

Sandoval had a torn labrum repaired by Dr. James Andrews last Tuesday, and the estimated recovery time is six months.

Following a spring training that began with questions about his weight, the 29-year-old Sandoval was placed on the disabled list in April with a strained left shoulder. He still doesn't know when the injury occurred.

''I don't know when that was going on and when that happened,'' he said. ''Like I said, everybody said I wasn't playing hurt. I was playing hurt.''

Sandoval helped the San Francisco Giants to World Series titles in 2010, `12 and'14, but has struggled since joining the Red Sox. He hit .245 with 10 homers and 47 RBIs in his first season after signing a $95 million, five-year contract in November 2014.

Manager John Farrell said he is at the beginning of a long recovery process, and also said the surgery was somewhat proof of why he wasn't playing.

''I don't know if there's vindication because of the surgery, but it was obvious something was going on,'' Farrell said.

Sandoval lost his job in spring training to Travis Shaw and appeared in just three games, going 0 for 6 with four strikeouts.

Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

-- Thunder 95, Spurs 91-- Road team has won three of five series games. This was only the second time this season Spurs lost consecutive games.

-- In his career, Gregg Popovich is 2-10 in elimination games on the road.

-- Penguins 4, Capitals 3 OT-- Pittsburgh advances in six games.

-- Bronx 10, Royals 7-- Lorenzo Cain hit three HRs in a losing cause.

-- Stations Casinos is going to buy the Palms in Las Vegas for $312.5M.

-- The NBA Draft has 60 picks, two per team; 63 players were invited to the NBA Combine. If you've declared for the draft but weren't invited to the Combine, please go back to college, unless your goal in life was to play in Turkey or the D-League.

**********

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Mid-week musings......

13) Only ten NBA head coaches have had their current job for more than two years. You grab the big money for as long as you can, put up with the insanity, then go on TV and relax. When coaches who win 50+ games get fired, you know its a nutty job.

12) Of the 32 NFL kickers who finished last season. 21 of them were not drafted.

11) Stephen Strasburg gets $175M for seven years from the Nationals; unusual for a Scott Boras client not to give free agency a shot. Finally, a sane person-- take the $$$ and run while you can!!!!

10) TV guys always are quick to praise AT&T Park in San Francisco, but there are bullpens on the field for one reason; the geniuses who planned this scenic ballpark forgot to incorporate them in the stadium's original plans. Whoops.

9) Christopher Kamka points out that of Todd Frazier's first 27 RBI this year, 16 of them came from the 7th inning on.

8) JT Realmuto lost a home run Monday night because a runner on first base went back to first base to tag up and Realmuto passed him, which means he is out. Nice to know Milwaukee 1B Chris Carter was paying attention; this happened in another Brewer game last month at Miller Park, but no one ever noticed.

Realmuto gets a single and one RBI but loses the home run.

7) Speaking of the Marlins, Dee Gordon's 80-game suspension ends in late July, but if the Marlins make the playoffs, Gordon is also ineligible for those games.

6) Mike DeCourcy of Sporting News reports that of the top ten vote getters in the NBA MVP voting, eight of them played 2+ years in college.

5) Random stat of the day: since 1984, the Portland Trailblazers hold the odd record of having the worst 3-point % (0-20) in a game they won. Lot of teams won without making a 3-pointer, but Portland missed the most, way back on December 10, 2002.

4) If I was a Seattle Mariners fan, I'd be excited; they're clearly the best team in the AL West and if their starting pitchers stay healthy, they're going to make the playoffs.

3) I like to watch the Mix Channel on DirecTV on baseball nights; can monitor eight games at once on my bigscreen. One small problem; Dodger games are never on the Mix Channel- that is channel 720 on DirecTV, by the way.

2) I'd have to be a masochist to watch the A's; they're terrible. Oakland starting pitchers lasted a total of nine innings in their last three games- they've finished the sixth inning once in their last ten road games.

Your five starting pitchers are like your five offensive linemen in the NFL; if those five guys aren't solid, your team cannot win.

1) I do not understand the new slide rule at second base and I think lot of players, managers feel the same way. No idea what the rule is and how it is supposed to be applied, because of the drastic inconsistencies in the first six weeks this season.

Wednesday's Diamond Notes
May 11, 2016

Hottest team: Diamondbacks (5-0 last five)
Yes, this category can be reserved for the Cubs, who have won nine straight games. However, Arizona is looking to complete its second consecutive road sweep as the D-backs wrap up their series at Colorado. The Snakes took all three games from the Braves this past weekend in Atlanta, while avenging a home sweep by the Rockies last month by taking the first two games at Coors Field. Arizona allowed one run or less for the fifth time this season in Tuesday’s 5-1 victory over Colorado, as the D-backs own an impressive 12-6 record away from Chase Field.

Coldest team: Athletics (1-8 last nine)
It’s seems like 100 years ago that Oakland began this season with an impressive 7-0 road record, which included sweeps over the Mariners and Yankees. The A’s have won only one game in May, while their pitching has been ripped apart at Fenway Park, giving up 27 runs the last two nights to the Red Sox. Oakland has dropped five straight series finales, as the A’s conclude their series with Boston tonight as southpaw Eric Surkamp heads to the mound, going for his third victory as a road underdog this season.

Hottest pitcher: Cole Hamels, Rangers (4-0, 2.68 ERA)
Texas and Chicago have split the first two games of their exciting series with the Rangers rallying for a 13-11 triumph on Tuesday. Hamels looks to restore order on the mound, as the Texas ace allowed one hit in seven scoreless innings in his past outing at Detroit, a 5-1 victory. The Rangers are 9-2 in Hamels’ 11 starts at Globe Life Park since he was dealt by the Phillies last July, while Texas has won five of his six outings in 2016.

Coldest pitcher: Matt Shoemaker, Angels (1-4, 9.15 ERA)
The offense for the Angels is non-existent right now, scoring six runs in the last four home losses. Shoemaker has the task of ending this skid, returning to the rotation for the first time since April 30, when he lasted 2.1 innings of a 7-2 home defeat to the Rangers. The right-hander has given up at least six earned runs in three starts this season, while tossing only six innings in two home outings and allowing 13 runs (12 earned).

Biggest UNDER run: Giants (4-0 last four)
San Francisco looks to avoid the sweep to Toronto this afternoon after posting only one run in the first two defeats to the Blue Jays. The Giants’ offense has plated four runs in the last four games, which includes a 13-inning victory over the Rockies in which San Francisco won, 2-1. Will the ‘under’ streak continue today? Madison Bumgarner toes the rubber for the Giants, who has won three straight starts, but each of those games finished ‘over’ the total.

Biggest OVER run: Royals (6-1 last seven)
The defending champions have lost five of their last seven games, as they have been involved in plenty of high-scoring contests in this stretch. Kansas City is coming off a 10-7 defeat to the Yankees on Tuesday, the sixth time in the past seven contests that the Royals have allowed at least six runs. Tonight, the Royals send out Yordano Ventura to the mound, who has given up 10 earned runs in his last two starts, while lasting a combined eight innings.

Matchup to watch: Tigers vs. Nationals
Detroit and Washington play the rubber match of their three-game series tonight in D.C. after the Tigers picked up a 5-4 victory on Tuesday. Each team sends out their ace in the finale as both right-handed hurlers are facing their old squads. Jordan Zimmermann makes his return to Washington after spending his first seven seasons with the Nationals, as he owns a 5-1 record and miniscule ERA of 1.10 in his first season with the Tigers. Max Scherzer is coming off his worst start of the season, allowing seven earned runs, including four home runs in an 8-6 loss to the Cubs last Friday. Scherzer currently owns a 4.80 ERA, the worst in any season of his nine-year career, while facing Detroit for the first time since leaving the Tigers after the 2014 campaign.

Betcha didn’t know: The Phillies continue to be one of the big surprises in the league at 19-14 after Tuesday’s 3-2 victory at Atlanta. However, each of Philadelphia’s last seven wins have come by one run each, while the Phillies own the best record in one-run games at 12-3. Even more impressive may be the 7-2 road record inside the NL East, which includes five victories over the Nationals and Mets.

Biggest public favorite:
Marlins (-180) vs. Brewers

Biggest public underdog: Tigers (+145) at Nationals

Biggest line move: Blue Jays (+120 to +110) at Giants

LEADING OFF: Scherzer vs Zimmermann a Tigers-Nats reunion
May 11, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

HEY, I KNOW YOU!

In some ways, Max Scherzer's $210 million free agent contract that brought him to the Nationals from the Tigers can be seen as having led to Jordan Zimmermann's departure from the Nationals to the Tigers as a free agent a year later. And so both right-handers - former teammates, current friends - could appreciate the intrigue of matching up against each other in the series finale. ''Of all the ways this could have shook out,'' 2013 AL Cy Young Award winner Scherzer said, ''this has to have happened exactly this way.'' Scherzer (3-2, 4.60 ERA) and Zimmermann (5-1, 1.10) will each be facing his former club for the first time.

MARQUEE MATCHUPS

Cole Hamels (4-0) takes his career-best 11-game winning streak into his outing for Texas against Mat Latos (5-0) and the Chicago White Sox. ... Blue Jays right-hander Marcus Stroman (4-0) pitches against Giants ace Madison Bumgarner (4-2), who has won his last three starts. ... Noah Syndergaard (2-2, 2.58 ERA) goes for the Mets at Dodger Stadium against Kenta Maeda (3-1, 1.66).

RAIN, RAIN GO AWAY

Minnesota postponed its series opener against Baltimore on Monday because of looming bad weather and rescheduled the game for July 28. It was the fourth postponement already for the Orioles this year. The weather for the series finale on Wednesday doesn't look good, either. But with few options for makeup dates going forward, and a strong preference to avoid a doubleheader on July 28, Twins general manager Terry Ryan said the team will do everything it can to get the game in. ''If the weather will cooperate at all, we'll wait it out,'' Ryan said.

MOUNTAIN MAN

Arizona's Robbie Ray (1-2) is the rare pitcher who's found some success at Coors Field. The left-hander takes a 1.54 ERA in two starts at the notoriously hitter-friendly park into his matchup with Colorado.

CHASING SUCCESS

Marlins left-hander Wei-Yin Chen (2-1, 4.66 ERA) is scheduled to face Milwaukee right-hander Chase Anderson (1-4, 6.44) in the final game of the series. Anderson has an ERA of 10.31 over his past four starts.

PLAYING SHORT

San Diego hopes for good news on shortstop Alexei Ramirez, who left Tuesday night's game against the Chicago Cubs due to cramping in his left hamstring. After hustling into second base with an RBI double, Ramirez walked off the field under his own power. The Padres had nine players on the disabled list coming into the day, including four infielders.

SOMETHING'S NOT RIGHT

Royals pitcher Chris Young plans to return to Kansas City to have an MRI on his right forearm. The right-hander, who won last year's World Series opener in relief, is 1-5 with a 6.88 ERA and has given up 13 homers in seven starts and 32 1/3 innings this season. He told the Royals after Monday night's loss to the New York Yankees, when he gave up a career-high five home runs in 2 2/3 innings, that he has been bothered by inflammation in his forearm.

Nationals announce $175M, 7-year deal with Strasburg
May 10, 2016

WASHINGTON (AP) A day after Stephen Strasburg deflected questions about a new contract, the Washington Nationals announced that they had, indeed, agreed to a seven-year deal with the right-hander that starts next season.

The team scheduled a news conference at Nationals Park on Tuesday with Strasburg. He is surprisingly skipping his first chance at free agency to stay with the club that drafted him No. 1 overall in 2009 and - in a move debated around baseball - shut him down before the playoffs in 2012 to protect the pitcher's surgically repaired right elbow.

According to a person familiar with the negotiations, the agreement calls for total payments of $175 million starting in 2017, but it includes $70 million in deferred money. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the Nationals did not reveal the financial terms of the deal.

Strasburg gets a $10 million signing bonus payable on July 1, 2019, and salaries of $15 million each in 2017 and 2018, $35 million in 2019, $25 million in 2020, $15 million apiece in 2021 and '22 and $45 million in 2023.

His deal contains salary deferrals of $30 million in 2019, $10 million in 2020 and $30 million in 2023.

If he stays for the full seven seasons, Strasburg would get $15 million each year from 2017-23, followed by seven $10 million payments each July 1 from 2024-30. The use of a deferral structure is similar to the $210 million, seven-year deal that the Nationals gave another Scott Boras client, right-hander Max Scherzer, before last season.

Strasburg would earn a $1 million performance bonus each year for pitching 180 innings. The new contract has an escape clause: Strasburg can opt out and become a free agent after the 2019 or 2020 seasons.

If he opts out after three seasons, $30 million deferred from his 2019 salary would be paid out in three $10 million installments each July 1 from 2020-22. If he opts out after four, $40 million deferred from 2019 and 2020 would be paid out in four $10 million installments every July 1 from 2021-24.

Word of the agreement emerged Monday while Strasburg was pitching in Washington's 5-4 victory over the visiting Detroit Tigers. After the game, Strasburg was asked about his contract and replied: ''I don't really have a comment about that right now.''

Asked about his comfort level in Washington, Strasburg answered: ''Growing up in Southern California, San Diego, all my life and stuff, the East Coast is a little bit of a change. But the city of D.C. has been great to me and my family. It's really grown on us. We're very comfortable here.''

By agreeing to a deal now, Strasburg leaves a weaker free-agent class in his wake, because he would have been the No. 1 pitcher available.

The 27-year-old Strasburg has a 59-37 career record and a 3.07 ERA across 139 appearances, all starts. He led the National League in strikeouts with 242 in 2014.

''From the moment he was drafted, Stephen has been far more than just a pitcher for our organization, and his talent is transcendent,'' Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo said. ''The numbers speak for themselves.''
