LEADING OFF: Kershaw sees doc, Matz has bone spur
June 29, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

BARKING BACK

Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw is returning to Los Angeles for tests on a sore lower back that's been bothering him for weeks. Kershaw may still make his next scheduled start Friday night against Colorado despite dealing on and off with the discomfort. Kershaw has been on the disabled list only once in his nine-year career, in early 2014 with a shoulder strain. ''It's been a few weeks where it's been in and out, and he's so good, it kind of started barking a little bit, so I think that right now we just want to kind of get some answers,'' manager Dave Roberts said.

PITCHING THROUGH PAIN

Steven Matz had his scheduled start pushed to Thursday to get extra rest after being diagnosed with a bone spur in his pitching elbow. The young Mets lefty will continue pitching through the bone spur because doctors have assured the team he cannot do damage to it. ''He's going to have to deal with it because it's not going away,'' manager Terry Collins said Tuesday. Matz had Tommy John surgery on his left elbow in 2009 shortly after being drafted.

WORKING HARD

The Indians go for their 12th straight win and Danny Salazar (9-3, 2.40) takes a five-game winning streak into a game at Atlanta. Cleveland's streak is its longest in 34 years and two shy of tying the franchise mark, and now it's in the hands of Salazar, who has been dominant, but not necessarily efficient. He is second in the AL in ERA behind Boston's Steven Wright, but he has also thrown the second-most pitches per plate appearance in the league with 4.17.

ROLLING IN ST. LOUIS

Cardinals right-hander Carlos Martinez (7-5, 3.02) tries to keep up a dominant stretch when St. Louis hosts Kansas City. Martinez is 3-0 with a 1.24 ERA over his past five starts, though he most recently got a no decision after seven strong innings in a 4-3 loss to Seattle. The Royals counter with Edinson Volquez (7-7, 5.15).

FAST TRACK

Right-hander Brock Stewart makes his major league debut for the Dodgers against Milwaukee after opening this season with Class A Rancho Cucamonga. The 2014 sixth-round pick rocketed to the majors with a 1.47 ERA in 14 starts between Class A, Double-A and Triple-A this season. Stewart was an infielder at Illinois State who rarely pitched before being drafted, but he needed just 221 1/3 minor league innings before getting the call. His quick transition to the mound may have been helped by the fact that his dad, Jeff, is a scout with the Rays.

Wednesday's MLB Game of the Day: Royals at Cardinals
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Matt Carpenter homered, doubled and drove in a pair of runs in Tuesday's 8-4 victory for St. Louis, which is 15-21 on the season at home.

Kansas City Royals at St. Louis Cardinals (A: +150, H: -180, Total: 8.0)

After earning a split on the road against their intrastate rival, the St. Louis Cardinals return home to host the reigning World Series champion Kansas City Royals on Wednesday night in the back end of the home-and-home four-game series. It's the opener of a nine-game homestand for St. Louis, which has dropped five in a row at Busch Stadium.

Matt Carpenter homered, doubled and drove in a pair of runs in Tuesday's 8-4 victory for St. Louis, which is 15-21 on the season at home. Kansas City has lost five of seven overall and may have suffered a costly injury when center fielder Lorenzo Cain was forced to leave Tuesday's game with a left hamstring strain. “We don’t know what’s wrong with Cain yet. We’re hoping the best," Royals left fielder Alex Gordon said. "If he goes down, we got a guy that can step in with (Jarrod) Dyson." Kansas City sends right-hander Edinson Volquez, who was ejected from Tuesday's contest, to the mound to oppose red-hot Carlos Martinez.

TV: 8:15 p.m. ET, FSN Kansas City, FSN Midwest (St. Louis)

INJURY REPORT:

Royals - CF L. Cain (Questionable Wednesday, hamstring).

Cardinals - SS A. Diaz (Out Wednesday, face), RP J. Walden (15-Day DL, shoulder).

WEATHER REPORT: It should be beautiful baseball weather for phase two of the I-70 series. Partly cloudy skies, low humidity, and temperatures in the mid-80's will welcome the two teams to St. Louis. There will be a slight breeze (5 mph) blowing in from center field, but it certainly won't impact the play on the field at all.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Royals RH Edinson Vólquez (7-7, 5.15 ERA) vs. Cardinals RH Carlos Martínez (7-5, 3.02)

Volquez has nowhere to go but up after a wretched performance versus Houston on Saturday, when he was hammered for 12 runs (11 earned) and failed to retire a batter in the second inning. Volquez managed to come away with a win despite giving up five runs to Detroit in his previous turn following seven scoreless innings of two-hit ball against Cleveland on June 13. Matt Holliday is 11-for-34 with two homers off Volquez, who is 5-6 lifetime against St. Louis.

Martinez has had a season of streaks, posting a 4-0 record with a 1.93 ERA in his first four starts before losing his next five outings and giving up at least four runs in four of them. He has reclaimed his early-season form during a five-start unbeaten streak in which he has yielded a total of five runs and pitched at least seven innings four times. The 24-year-old Martinez has struggled at Busch Stadium, posting a 3-4 record and 4.21 ERA in eight starts.

TRENDS:

* Royals are 1-10 in their last 11 road games vs. a team with a winning record.
* Royals are 1-7 in Volquez' last 8 road starts vs. a team with a winning record.
* Cardinals are 2-8 in their last 10 interleague games.
* Cardinals are 1-5 in Martinez' last 6 home starts.
* Over is 8-1 in Royals last 9 games vs. a starter with a WHIP less than 1.15.
* Under is 5-1-4 in the last 10 meetings.
* Road team is 4-0 in Blakney's last 4 games behind home plate.

CONSENSUS: As the I-70 series shifts to St. Louis, so does the public opinion - 70 percent of users are on the Cards tonight. The Over is picking up 58 percent of the totals wagers.

PHOENIX (AP) Pinch-hitter Tyler Goeddel hit a sacrifice fly in the 10th inning and the Philadelphia Phillies completed their first sweep at Chase Field in 10 years with a 9-8 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday.

The Diamondbacks went up 7-4 in the seventh inning on Paul Goldschmidt's two-run double, but the Phillies rallied with four runs in the eighth to go up 8-7.

Jean Segura tied it in the bottom half on an infield single, but the Diamondbacks allowed Jeanmar Gomez (3-2) to escape a jam in the ninth.

Peter Bourjos, who earlier had a two-run homer, hit a two-out single off Silvino Bracho (0-2) in the 10th and moved to third on Cody Asche's single. Goeddel followed with a line drive to right for the go-ahead run.

Brett Oberholtzer worked around a single in the 10th for his first save.

YANKEES 9, RANGERS 7

NEW YORK (AP) - Brian McCann hit a tying, three-run homer off Sam Dyson, Didi Gregorius capped a six-run ninth inning with his two-run shot and the New York Yankees rallied past Texas.

Down 7-2 and in danger of falling 10 games behind AL East-leading Baltimore, the Yankees began their comeback when McCann homered off Cesar Ramos in the eighth.

Rob Refsnyder singled off Matt Bush leading off the ninth, Jacoby Ellsbury singled and Dyson (1-2) relieved.

Brett Gardner singled and Refsnyder came home when center fielder Ian Desmond bobbled the ball for an error. After Alex Rodriguez lined out, McCann homered into the right-field bleachers, Starlin Castro walked and Gregorius lined the ball into the right-field seats for his first career game-ending homer.

Luis Cessa (1-0) allowed one run in three innings for his first big league win.

CUBS 9, REDS 2

CINCINNATI (AP) - Anthony Rizzo legged out his first inside-the-park homer - another unusual moment in a series full of oddities - and Chicago finished a three-game sweep to get back on solid footing after a rough week.

The Cubs went 1-6 last week, hurt by an injury-depleted lineup and a balky bullpen. With thousands of Cubs fans in the stands at Great American Ball Park for each game, they pulled off an invigorating sweep.

Rizzo drove in three runs in the first inning off left-hander Cody Reed (0-2) with the Cubs' first inside-the-park homer since 2011, when Tony Campana circled the bases against Cincinnati. Left fielder Adam Duvall cut in front of center fielder Billy Hamilton but couldn't get to the ball, which deflected off Hamilton's face. He was examined and left the game.

Kyle Hendricks (6-6) gave up Duvall's 22nd homer and went 6 2/3 innings. He also drove in a run with a squeeze bunt.

ASTROS 10, ANGELS 4

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Jose Altuve went 4 for 5 and scored four runs to help Houston complete a three-game sweep.

It was the second time Houston has swept Los Angeles in the last two weeks. The Astros finished the six games with 37 runs. It was also Houston's eighth straight win over their AL West rivals, extending the longest winning streak against Los Angeles in franchise history.

Houston has gone 35-20 since May 1, the third-best mark in the AL in that span.

Altuve, who extended his career-high on-base streak to 32 games, was a home run shy of the cycle and finished the series 8 for 14 with two RBIs and six runs.

Dallas Keuchel (5-9) limited the Angels to three runs and six hits over six innings to win his second straight decision.

Jered Weaver (6-7) pitched into the sixth inning but left after giving up a one-out solo home run to George Springer.

NATIONALS 4, METS 2

WASHINGTON (AP) - Daniel Murphy homered twice, tormenting his former team yet again, and Washington completed a three-game sweep of the New York Mets.

Max Scherzer (9-5) cruised against New York's sputtering offense, allowing two hits with 10 strikeouts over 7 1/3 innings. He retired 18 in a row before Brandon Nimmo's single in the eighth and finished with at least 10 strikeouts for the fourth straight game.

Murphy homered off Logan Verrett (3-5) in the second for a 1-0 lead and golfed a two-run drive in the eighth. He matched his career high with 14 homers and helped Washington win its fourth in a row.

The Mets went 23 innings without scoring before James Loney's two-run homer in the ninth off Shawn Kelley.

RAYS 4, RED SOX 0

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Matt Moore pitched seven spotless innings and Brandon Guyer homered and drove in two runs in his return from a three-week stint on the disabled list to lead Tampa Bay.

Moore (4-5) allowed three singles, walked two and struck out five to outpitch David Price (8-5), the former Rays ace who fell to 1-3 in five career starts against his old team.

Guyer, who missed 23 games with a left hamstring strain, led off the second inning with his seventh homer. He doubled down the left-field line to make it 4-1 in the third.

Moore, meanwhile, held the Red Sox hitless until Christian Vazquez singled leading off the sixth. Mookie Betts and Xander Bogaerts followed with hits to load the bases with one out, but David Ortiz popped up and Hanley Ramirez hit a routine fly that ended the threat.

ROYALS 3, CARDINALS 2, 12 INNINGS

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Alcides Escobar hit a go-ahead RBI double just inside the right-field line in the 12th inning and Kansas City outlasted St. Louis.

Escobar drove in the first run of the game with a bases-loaded sacrifice fly in the eighth. His fly to shallow right off Seth Maness (0-2) fell just in front of Stephen Piscotty, whose homer leading off the 10th tied it at 2.

Chien-Ming Wang (5-0) worked two scoreless innings for Kansas City, which survived blown saves by Wade Davis and Joakim Soria, stranded 19 runners and used all of its bench players. The Royals are 39-50 in the I-70 interleague series but 14-12 at 11-year-old Busch Stadium.

Whit Merrifield put Kansas City ahead in the 10th when a potential double-play grounder was booted by second baseman Matt Carpenter and Merrifield got an RBI. He also doubled with one out in the 12th.

BLUE JAYS 5, ROCKIES 3

DENVER (AP) - Aaron Sanchez allowed one run in eight innings and Josh Donaldson homered to lead Toronto.

Sanchez (8-1) allowed six hits, struck out three and walked two in extending his unbeaten streak to 12 games.

The Blue Jays won their first series ever in Denver and their first overall since June 13-16, against the Philadelphia Phillies.

Roberto Osuna gave up RBI doubles to Mark Reynolds and Daniel Descalso and put the tying run in scoring position with one out in the ninth. He hit Charlie Blackmon to load the bases before he struck out Cristhian Adames to end the game.

Tyler Anderson (0-2) allowed the homer to Donaldson with two outs in the third inning and an RBI single to Troy Tulowitzki two batters later to give Toronto a 3-0 lead.

ORIOLES 12, PADRES 6

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Mark Trumbo hit his major league-leading 23rd homer and drove in four runs as AL East-leading Baltimore won its seventh straight.

The Orioles tied the 1996 Oakland A's for the most homers in June, 55. Overall, the Orioles lead the majors with 124.

The Orioles hit four home runs in sweeping the two-game series, including three in Tuesday night's 11-7 win.

Trumbo hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning and a two-run double in the ninth. Manny Machado had two hits and three RBIs, and pitcher Yovani Gallardo (3-1) singled twice and scored a run.

Christian Friedrich (4-3) allowed six runs, four earned, and five hits in five innings.

TIGERS 10, MARLINS 3

DETROIT (AP) - Miguel Cabrera hit one of Detroit's three homers to lead the Tigers past Miami.

Cabrera hit his 18th homer of the season in the fourth inning, tying Billy Williams at No. 48 on baseball's career list with 426.

Steven Moya and Jarrod Saltalamacchia cleared the fence in consecutive at-bats in the fifth, giving Detroit an 8-2 lead.

Marlins reliever Dustin McGowan gave up all three homers, matching a career high.

The Tigers built a cushion right away with a four-run first, getting two runs on Victor Martinez's single off Tom Koehler.

Daniel Norris (1-0) struck out a career-high eight and gave up two runs on eight hits and a walk over five innings.

Koehler (6-7) allowed five runs and eight hits in three innings.

INDIANS 3, BRAVES 0

ATLANTA (AP) - Danny Salazar threw seven innings, Lonnie Chisenhall hit his second homer of the series and Cleveland won its 12th straight.

Cleveland swept its fourth straight series to extend the majors' longest winning streak this season.

The Indians need one more win to match the longest winning streaks in franchise history. They won 13 straight in 1942 and 1951. They had another 12-game streak in 1922.

Jason Kipnis broke a scoreless tie with a two-run single in the fifth.

Salazar (10-3) was dominant, allowing five hits with no walks and eight strikeouts. He lowered the AL's second-best ERA to 2.22 while winning his sixth straight start.

Braves right-hander Joel De La Cruz (0-1), recalled from Triple-A Gwinnett for his major league debut, allowed three runs in six innings.

BREWERS 7, DODGERS 0

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Junior Guerra allowed two hits over eight innings, Ryan Braun hit a two-run homer and a two-run double and Kirk Nieuwenhuis hit a two-run shot to help Milwaukee spoil Brock Stewart's major league debut.

Braun's two-run homer off Chris Hatcher in the seventh inning gave Guerra some extra cushion, but the 31-year-old rookie right-hander didn't need it.

Guerra (5-1) allowed Corey Seager's double in the first and Yasiel Puig's single in the fifth. After he walked Adrian Gonzalez in the first, Guerra retired 21 of the next 23 batters, striking out seven.

Guerra received a no-decision at Dodger Stadium on June 16 in his previous start against the Dodgers. He allowed five runs and five hits over 5 1/3 innings then.

Stewart (0-1) retired the side in order in the first, but the Brewers scored five times on six hits in the second. The 24-year-old right-hander regrouped and held the Brewers scoreless for the next three innings. He struck out seven and walked two, throwing 95 pitches.

WHITE SOX 9, TWINS 6

CHICAGO (AP) - James Shields broke out of a slump with 6 2/3 innings against one of baseball's worst lineups, helping Chicago beat Minnesota.

Shields (3-9) allowed one run and eight hits in his first win since he tossed seven scoreless innings for San Diego at Milwaukee on May 12. The right-hander got hit hard after he was acquired by Chicago in a trade June 4, going 0-2 with a 15.80 ERA in his first four starts.

Todd Frazier, Brett Lawrie and Tyler Saladino homered for the White Sox, who improved to 7-1 against the Twins after losing 4-0 in the series opener on Tuesday. Saladino and Tim Anderson each had two hits and two RBIs.

Ricky Nolasco (3-6) was charged with seven runs and nine hits in 5 2/3 innings in his second straight loss.

Nate Jones got one out for his second save.

ATHLETICS 7, GIANTS 1

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Jed Lowrie and Yonder Alonso each hit two-run homers and Oakland took advantage of San Francisco's sloppy play to win its third straight game in the Bay Bridge series.

Sean Manaea (3-4) pitched 5 2/3 scoreless innings and Billy Burns drove in two runs for the A's, who have won six of seven and will go for a sweep in the two-city series against their cross-bay rivals on Thursday night.

The Giants committed three errors that led to four unearned runs and botched a few other plays in the field that left starting pitcher Jake Peavy (4-7) fuming on the mound. Peavy allowed seven runs - three earned - and five hits in 3 1/3 innings, but could have had a better fate with more support from his fielders.

PIRATES 8, MARINERS 1

SEATTLE (AP) - Sean Rodriguez doubled in consecutive at-bats and drove in four runs, David Freese hit a solo home run and Pittsburgh beat Seattle.

Rodriguez was responsible for breaking the game open in the fifth inning with a three-run double into the left-field corner off Seattle reliever Donn Roach. Rodriguez doubled an inning earlier off starter Wade Miley (6-4) to score Starling Marte.

Freese got it all started with a solo home run on the first pitch of the second inning. It was a three-run inning for Pittsburgh, capped by a two-run double from Josh Harrison.

All that offense backed a strong start from rookie right-hander Jameson Taillon (2-1), who pitched six innings, giving up just one run and six hits.

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud.......

13) Can you imagine if they ever put the DH in the National League, what games at Coors Field would be like? Teams would score 20+ runs several times a year.

12) Put it this way: Colorado is 12-2 at home this season when their starting pitcher throws 6+ innings and allow four or less runs. They're 6-18 in other home games.

11) Bad Beat of the Week: under 8.5 in Cubs-Reds Tuesday night. Game was 2-2 all the way into the 15th inning, when Cubs scored five times in top of the 15th. Oy.

10) Crowd at College World Series for Game 2 off the best-of-3 series was 24,716, which means the CWS is a pretty good money maker.

9) Jose Quintana has eight losses this year; White Sox scored a total of nine runs in those eight games.

8) Seattle Seahawks are 53-27 the last five years, thanks to a +55 turnover margin.

7) Zach Greinke left Tuesday's game with an oblique injury, making Arizona's year even more of a disaster than it already has been. Diamondbacks are 13-27 at home but 23-17 on the road, which makes very little sense.

6) Golfer Billy Hurley III qualified for the British Open by winning at Congressional last week; but will pass on going over the pond to go to his sister's wedding. Taking his place in the British Open field is Jim Herman.

5) Australian Peter Hooley, who helped put the "great" in Albany Great Danes for four years, will play pro basketball for the Plymouth Raiders in Great Britain.

4) Since 2007, the best single-season turnover margins were the 2011 49ers and 2010 Patriots, both of which had +28 margins.

3) Oakland Raiders were +1 in turnovers LY, after being -50 combined over the last six seasons. Winning the turnover battle is a big step in learning how to win. I'm going to have more on NFL teams and turnovers next month.

2) Odd note about umpire Vic Carapazza; his last five games behind the plate were all matchups between two lefty pitchers. Doesn't happen a lot.

1) Texas Longhorns scooped up four of the five recruits who bolted Baylor after coach Art Briles was let go. Texas is now #7 in this year's recruiting rankings.

July good month/bad month pitchers

In order for Francisco Liriano to reflect past results of July, he's going to have to stop leaving pitches in the heart of the plate.

Fireworks and the MLB All-Star game go hand-in-hand during the month of July. It also denotes the start of the 2nd half of the MLB campaign. And as we’ve come to learn the key to each and every team’s fortune lies on the pitching staff. Can they sustain or will they unravel like Jose Canseco going back on a fly ball? Stay tuned. What we do know is that certain pitchers love hurling this time of the season while others tend to get lit up like a roman candle on the 4th of July.

Listed below are hurlers that have enjoyed a two-to-one or better success ratio in team-starts over the course of the last three seasons during the month of July. On the flip side, we've also listed pitchers that struggle in July, winning 33% percent or less of their team-start efforts. To qualify pitchers must have made a minimum of 10 starts, with at least one start each July over the last three years. And for your convenience alongside each record we break down each pitcher’s greatest success or greatest failure rate either home (H) or away (A) within his good or bad month.

Note: * designates a categorical repeat appearance by this pitcher, maintaining status quo from last season’s July list.

GOOD MONTH PITCHERS:

*Chen, Wei-Yin • 9-4 (5-1 H)

The Miami left-hander has not been terribly effective with an ERA hovering around 5. If Chen can develop more command, he's shown again this year he's tough when in challenging situations, allowing .186 batting average and .271 on-base percentage with runners in scoring position.

Garza, Matt • 9-3 (5-1 H)

Since coming back from spring training injury on June 14th, the Milwaukee right-hander has been a mix of good and bad, but come through when it counted. Opposing hitters are batting over .300 against Garza, but he's held those runners in check and induced a heavy dose of ground balls that have led to outs. If he continues, this Brewers starter might be effective.

Greinke, Zack • 11-4 (6-2 H)

Though Arizona is falling short of preseason expectations, the Diamondbacks ace is not and, other than Clayton Kershaw, has arguably been as effective as any pitcher since the end of April with batters hitting around .200 against him. Once again his array of pitches are finding the right spots and fastball is cooking!

Kazmir, Scott • 10-5 (6-2 H)

When Kazmir misses on location for fastball, the other team's lineup begins to look for off-speed stuff, which has caused his inconsistency this season. When he's working the corners on the knees early in the count, this sets up secondary pitches. In the past he's done so in July, let's see what he comes up with this time.

*Kershaw, Clayton • 12-3 (8-0 A)

When either Kershaw loses or has a less than stellar performance, which is infrequent, it is home page news on most sports websites. With opponents batting just .185 against him, baseball's best pitcher has close to as many home runs surrendered (6) as walks (9) to start the month over 121 innings. It’s no wonder his name is whispered in the same company as Sandy Koufax.

Kluber, Corey • 13-4 (9-2 H)

Since winning the Cy Young award in 2014, Kluber has not been able to match that magical season, but is part of a very good Cleveland rotation. Looking ahead, if the Indians righty can do a better job than permitting .281 batting averages with runners in scoring position, all his numbers will drop and his victories will go up. Note: Kluber’s numbers above also reflect his career team mark during July.

*Liriano, Francisco • 12-2 (7-0 H)

After several fine seasons with Pittsburgh, Liriano has not been effective in 2016. Walks and home runs have done him in and in order to reflect past results of July, he's going to have to stop leaving pitches in the heart of the plate.

Peralta, Wily • 8-4 (5-1 H)

Peralta has been thoroughly ineffective all season (6.68 ERA) and was sent to minors after June 11th start. His return this month or this season depends on his Triple-A results. Note: Peralta’s numbers above also reflect his career team mark during July.

Price, David • 11-5 (7-1 A)

To date, the Boston lefty could be described as a mild disappointment, with an ERA north of 4.5 most of the season. No longer owning an upper 90's heater, Price does not blow away as many hitters as before and the fastball lacks some of the previous movement of the past. The slider has not had the usual bite from start to start. Red Sox need this ace to be one.

Ross, Tyson • 10-4 (4-1 H)

Ross has not pitched since he hit the DL with right shoulder inflammation after first start in April. San Diego Union reports a return even this month appears optimistic.
Note: Ross’ numbers above also reflect his career team mark during July.

Santana, Ervin • 11-4 (8-1 H)

Like his teammates, Santana is not having a good year, as opposing hitters are clocking him for nearly .300 average, compared to .256 over his 11-year career. Little reason to believe this month will match the past even if he improves with this Twins club.

*Volquez, Edinson • 10-5 (6-1 A)

Never a frontline hurler, Volquez numbers this campaign have matched the Royals, being very ordinary to date. The Dominican Republic native has done the job against right-handed batters, who have been knocking him around for nearly .300 average.

BAD MONTH PITCHERS:

Wood, Alex • 4-8 (0-6 A)

Wood – the only pitcher to appear on the July Bad Month list this season - was initially expected to be shut down for four weeks after landing on the 15-day disabled list at the end of May with a posterior impingement in his throwing elbow. Currently, the timetable is for mid-July return, but the oft-injured pitcher can hardly be counted on as record shows. Note: Wood’’s numbers above reflect his career team mark during July.

High-scoring June gives way to Over boom for MLB betting

MLB games went 16-7-3 Over/Under on Monday and Tuesday and have been playing Over at a 61 percent rate the past week.

Major League Baseball hitters could be finally finding their swing and catching up to their counterparts on the mound, or they could be taking the “Superman” approach and boosting their power thanks to the summer sun. Whatever the reason, baseball bats are suddenly red hot and MLB Over bettors are burning books because of it.

The Over has been building up bankrolls recently, with the last seven days of baseball action producing a 57-36-3 Over/Under mark (61.29 percent Overs) including a 16-7-3 O/U record in the previous two days heading into Wednesday’s schedule.

Since June 22, MLB games are averaging 10.45 combined runs scored against an average closing total (Over/Under) of 8.66 runs – blasting that number by almost two runs an outing. Teams are hitting a collective .277 BA during this stretch, which is well above the season batting average of .255.

Overall, June has generated an uptick in scoring for the 2016 MLB season. Clubs plated an average of 4.16 runs per game in April and 4.5 runs per game in May. So far this month, teams are scoring 4.76 runs per game – 9.52 total runs per contest – and hitting .263 BA compared to .249 in April and .254 in May.

Those numbers have the 2016 campaign on pace to be the highest scoring MLB season since 2009, with 8.92 total runs per game. That’s produced a collective 575-527-57 Over/Under record through the first three months of the calendar, slightly leaning toward the Over at a 52.18 percent clip.

This goes against the recent trend in baseball, with scores dropping season after season. From 2009 to 2015, the average total runs scored per game plummeted from 9.22 to 8.5 with 2014 being the lowest scoring season in that span at 8.14 – the fewest amount of runs scored since 1981 (8.00).

Like most trends over the course of the 162-game baseball season, totals tend to level off. With July up next, total bettors may want to jump on the Over in final days of June before the calendar flips to what has typically been an ‘Under’ month for MLB betting.

Last season, MLB games in July averaged 8.22 runs versus an average betting total of 7.70, but still finished at 169-184-24 Over/Under – 52 percent Unders. And since 2012, MLB games in July have gone 669-786-72 O/U, for a 54 percent Under rate.

Currently, just 10 of the 30 MLB clubs have played more to the Under than the Over in 2016. Last year finished with 13 teams leaning to the Under on the season.

Thursday's Diamond Notes
June 30, 2016

Hottest team: Orioles (7-0 past 7)

The Baltimore Orioles powered their way past the San Diego Padres in interleague play, and now set their sights on the Seattle Mariners at Safeco Field. The O's have scored at least 11 runs in each of their past three games, and five or more runs in eight straight outings. A big part of their success has been the long ball, as they enter Thursday's game with 55 homers in the month of June. If they can hit one home run they will break the all-time record for homers hit in June. The Orioles have won four straight against right-handed pitchers, and they're 5-2 in Chris Tillman's past seven road starts.

Coldest team: Rays (2-12 past 14)

The Tampa Bay Rays blanked the Boston Red Sox and old friend David Price in Wednesday's game, taking two of three from their division rivals. But they still have a long way to go before bettors stop fading them and start to take them seriously. They haven't been able to beat a right-handed pitcher in quite some time, going 0-11 vs. RHP overall, including 0-4 in their past four tries at home against righties. They're also a dismal 1-4 in Jake Odorizzi's past five home outings. The Tigers have won five of the past seven meetings in this series, too.

Hottest pitcher:
Madison Bumgarner, Giants (8-4, 1.99 ERA)

MadBum enters his start Thursday in Oakland with a sub-2.00 ERA and 122 strikeouts over 108 1/3 innings in 16 starts. He wasn't terribly impressive last time out, so that doesn't bode well for the A's in this one. Manager Bruce Bochy is so confident in Bumgarner that he is letting him hit, too, in an American League park. It has been 40 years since a major league manager intentionally forfeited the designated hitter in an American League ballpark. It isn't that Bumgarner is lighting it up offensively, but the team is short on right-handed hitters against LHP Dillon Overton, and he does have 11 homers over the past 183 at-bats.

Coldest pitcher: R.A. Dickey, Blue Jays (5-8, 4.23 ERA)

The knuckleballer Dickey has the unenviable task of trying to shut down the streaking Cleveland Indians, who enter on a 12-game overall win streak, including six in a row on the road. To make matters worse for Dickey, the Blue Jays are 0-8 in his past eight starts at Rogers Centre, and 4-11 in his past 15 starts overall. Toronto has won eight of their past 11 games at home, and they're 18-8 in their past 26 vs. RHP. The Indians have managed just two wins in their past seven trips north of the border.

Biggest UNDER run:
Mets (7-3 past 10)

The Mets offense has been struggling lately, averaging just 1.8 runs per game over their past five outings. It's no surprise that they have lost four of those games, and the under has also gone 4-1 during the span. They'll be trying to take down Cubs RHP John Lackey. The under is 7-2 in Lackey's past nine outings, and the under is 5-1-1 in Chicago's past seven against left-handed pitching. The under is 9-2 in New York's past 11 vs. RHP, including 4-0 in their past four home games against righties. In this series the under is 8-3-2 in the past 13 meetings, and 5-1-1 in the past seven tilts at Citi Field.

Biggest OVER run:
Yankees (8-2-1 past 11)

The other New York team is having an under run, but the Yankees are on an over kick. They'll wrap up their four-game set against Texas Thursday afternoon, with the over going 2-0-1 in the first three outings. The Rangers are also on an over run, going 5-1-2 over their past eight, and 4-1 in A.J. Griffin's past five outings. The over has cashed in six of the past eight for the Yankees vs. RHP, and 5-2-1 in their past eight home games. New York pitching has allowed six or more runs in four straight, and eight of the past 10 outings.

Matchup to watch: Braves vs. Marlins

The Miami Marlins head up Interstate 75 to Atlanta looking to add to the misery of the Braves. Atlanta has won just 11 of their 43 games at Turner Field this season, and they are coming off a sweep at the hands of the red-hot Cleveland Indians. The Marlins have been strong on the road, winning 20 of their 38 games away from South Florida. The Marlins will also have the luxury of facing RHP Mike Foltynewicz, who is fresh off the 15-day disabled list and could potentially show a little rust after a long layoff.

Betcha didn’t know
: The Reds and Nationals square off in D.C. with two ice-cold pitchers on the bump. The Reds are just 2-11 in Brandon Finnegan's past 13 starts overall, and 1-5 in his past six road outings. The Nationals are 0-7 in Gio Gonzalez's past seven outings, and 1-4 in his past five home outings. So something's gotta give. The Nats are also 0-4 in their past four against southpaws. So something's gotta give. Looking at past history in this series, the Reds have dominated. Cincinnati is 7-2 in the past nine matchups, and 5-2 in their past seven trips to our nation's capital.

Biggest public favorite:
Nationals (-200) vs. Reds

Biggest public underdog:
Rangers (+135) at Yankees

Biggest line move:
Athletics (+160 to +145) vs. Giants

LEADING OFF: Cleveland streaking, Bumgarner needs no DH
June 30, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

CLEVELAND ROCKS

The Indians will try to tie a franchise record by winning their 13th straight when they head to Toronto. Cleveland has twice won 13 consecutive games, in 1942 and 1951, and they haven't lost since June 15 - near the end of the NBA Finals, which was won by the Cleveland Cavaliers. Carlos Carrasco (3-2, 2.73) is on the hill after shutting out the Tigers his last time out, and the Blue Jays will counter with R.A. Dickey (5-8, 4.23).

BATTING BUMGARNER

Giants manager Bruce Bochy plans to bat slugging pitcher Madison Bumgarner instead of a designated hitter at Oakland. It will be the first time a team intentionally uses a pitcher to hit instead of a DH since the Chicago White Sox allowed Ken Brett to do it in 1976 - the Rays were forced to bat pitcher Andy Sonnanstine in 2009 because of a lineup card mix-up. Bumgarner has nine homers in 183 at-bats the past three seasons, a rate that would lead to about 36 home runs if he had a full season as a hitter. Bumgarner has even made a public plea to enter into the All-Star Home Run Derby.

GOING DEEP

Winners of seven straight, Mark Trumbo and the AL East-leading Orioles take a swing at the major league mark for home runs in June when they visit Seattle. With one game left this month, Baltimore has gone deep 55 times - tying a record held by the 1996 Oakland A's. Trumbo leads the majors with 23 homers this season, and the O's rank first with 124. Chris Tillman (10-1) tries to extend the winning streak.

REMATCH

Anthony Rizzo and the major league-leading Cubs begin a four-game series in New York against the Mets, who swept Chicago in the NL Championship Series last October after losing all seven regular-season meetings. John Lackey (7-4, 3.29 ERA) starts for the Cubs, coming off his worst outing of the season. Steven Matz (7-3, 3.29) goes for the Mets after his turn was pushed back a day because of a bone spur in his left elbow.

READY OR NOT

Braves right-hander Mike Foltynewicz (sore right elbow) is expected to come off the 15-day disabled list and pitch against Miami instead of making a second scheduled rehab start for Triple-A Gwinnett. Foltynewicz allowed one hit in five scoreless innings Saturday for Gwinnett. Atlanta's rotation is thin after rookie John Gant went on the disabled list Tuesday and struggling right-hander Aaron Blair was sent back to Gwinnett on Saturday. Julio Teheran's turn was bumped back a day to Friday to give him extra rest.

Giants will let Bumgarner hit for himself in AL park
June 30, 2016

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) Madison Bumgarner will get to hit for himself - even in an American League park.

San Francisco manager Bruce Bochy says he plans to use his slugging pitcher instead of a designated hitter Thursday night when the Giants visit the Oakland Athletics.

It will be the first time a team intentionally used a pitcher to hit instead of a DH since the Chicago White Sox allowed Ken Brett to do it in 1976 - the Rays were forced to bat pitcher Andy Sonnanstine in 2009 because of a lineup card mix-up.

Bumgarner is batting .175 this season with two homers and five RBIs in 40 at-bats. He has nine homers in 183 at-bats the past three seasons, a rate that would lead to about 36 home runs if he had a full season as a hitter. Bumgarner has even made a public plea to enter into the All-Star Home Run Derby.

Bochy says he made the decision because the right-handed hitting Bumgarner is a dangerous hitter and the A's are starting lefty Dillon Overton.
