Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

Odds to win at least one major this season:

even-- Jordan Spieth

13-10-- Rory McIlroy

9-4-- Jason Day

7-2-- Bubba Watson

4-1-- Dustin Johnson, Rickie Fowler

6-1-- Phil Mickelson

**********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.......

13) Villanova 77, North Carolina 74-- One of the great championship games ever played in NCAA tournament, an ending that will be remembered forever. A great advertisement for the sport.

12) The swing in emotions in a Las Vegas sportsbook during a game like that is fun to watch; was next to a sharp gambler who had Villanova and the under- the Marcus Paige 3-pointer cost him his under bet-- he took that loss like an adult and was rewarded by Villanova covering.

11) Mike Krzyzewski had knee replacement surgery on Sunday; who has surgery on a Sunday?

10) I had no idea Shaquille O'Neal wasn't in the Basketball Hall of Fame already; what took so long? He appeared in Wrestlemania before his election.

9) UAB hired from within, replacing Jerod Haase with assistant Rob Ehsan.

Vanderbilt hired Bryce Drew away from Valparaiso.

8) I'm driving down the Strip Sunday night, and a guy dressed in full Superman costume is walking alongside my car, carrying only a crowbar. Only in Las Vegas.

7) Random fact: Apparently Al Roker and Lenny Kravitz are cousins.

6) It snowed in the Northeast this week and baseball season started. A team in Texas that plays its home games in a dome got rained out in the Bronx yesterday. Why in the name of Willard Scott was this series not played in Houston?

There are seven dome teams in the majors; those seven, the five California teams, and the Rangers should open at home every damn year, just for weather's sake.

5) Rookie shortstop Trevor Story homered twice in his MLB debut as Colorado won in Arizona. Story looks like a terrific prospect, but sometime this year, they'll also get Jose Reyes back from whatever suspension he gets. Reyes makes $22M a year- they'll have to trade Reyes, right?

4) Mets-Royals series was put at the start of the season before the teams met in the World Series LY. Schedules for the next season come out in August.

3) Pirates gave Gregory Polanco a 5-year, $35M extension; glad to see them spend some money to keep their nucleus intact.

2) Ben Revere left the Nationals' opener yesterday, but Washington doesn't release injury information during a game- they said it was a ribcage injury after the game.

1) Sonny Gray got scratched from his start with food poisoning; Rich Hill was less than brilliant as a replacement. No word on when Gray will pitch next.

Tigers, Marlins battle
April 5, 2016

DETROIT TIGERS (0-0) at MIAMI MARLINS (0-0)

First pitch: Tuesday, 7:10 p.m. ET
Sportsbook.ag Line: Detroit -120, Miami +110, Total: 7.5

Justin Verlander and the Tigers kick off their 2016 season against Wei-Yin Chen and the Miami Marlins in an interleague matchup.

The Tigers (74-87 in 2015) finished in last place in the American League Central last season, but there’s no reason to think they can’t return to the playoffs in 2016. The Marlins (71-91 in 2015) will have difficulty squeezing into the playoffs with the Mets and the Nationals in their division, but they should be much improved from last season.

The Tigers added some high-priced free agents in RHP Jordan Zimmermann (13-10, 3.66 ERA, 164 Ks in 2015) and OF Justin Upton (.251, 26 HRs, 81 RBIs, 19 SBs in 2015). The Marlins’ biggest free-agent addition was LHP Wei-Yin Chen (11-8, 3.34 ERA, 153 Ks in 2015); Tuesday’s starter. Miami also added 3B/1B Chris Johnson (.255, 3 HRs, 18 RBIs in 83 games in 2015).

The Tigers are an incredibly dangerous offensive club, and Chen will have to be awfully careful in his Marlins debut. 1B Miguel Cabrera (.338, 18 HRs, 76 RBIs in 2015) is one of the best hitters on the planet, and DH Victor Martinez (.245, 11 HRs, 64 RBIs in 2015) remains a threat despite a down year in 2015. Chen will also have to contend with Upton, 2B Ian Kinsler (.296, 11 HRs, 73 RBIs in 2015) and RF J.D. Martinez (.282, 38 HRs, 102 RBIs in 2015), who’s coming off an outstanding campaign.

The Tigers haven’t seen much of Chen. Only two players on the Tigers have more than five at-bats against him. Kinsler has had tremendous success against the left-hander in his career, going 5-for-12 with a pair of doubles, an RBI and a walk.

RHP Justin Verlander (5-8, 3.38 ERA, 113 Ks in 20 starts in 2015) is far from the most dominant pitcher in baseball—he was at one time—but he still possesses very good stuff.

As RF Giancarlo Stanton (.265, 27 HRs in 279 ABs in 2015) goes, so go the Marlins. The 6’6” slugger played just 74 games last season, but when healthy he’s arguably the most potent power hitter in baseball. 24-year-old LF Christian Yelich (.300, 7 HRs, 44 RBIs, 16 SBs in 126 games in 2015) has a ton of upside, as does 25-year-old CF Marcell Ozuna (.259, 10 HRs, 44 RBIs, 27 2Bs in 123 games in 2015). Always a threat to steal, 2B Dee Gordon (.333, 58 SBs, .359 OBP in 2015) can hit and is an absolute terror on the bases. If he gets on, Verlander will have to keep a very close eye on him.

Verlander has spent his entire career in the American League—with the Tigers—so the Marlins have very limited experience against the six-time All-Star and 2011 American League Cy Young Award winner. Stanton has struck out in all three career plate appearances against Verlander, and Gordon is also 0-for-3 with a strikeout. Veteran 3B Martin Prado (.288, 9 HRs, 63 RBIs in 129 games in 2015) has seen a bit of Verlander, going 3-for-9 with two doubles. Future Hall of Famer Ichiro Suzuki (.229, 1 HR, 21 RBIs, 11 SBs in 2015) played in the American League from 2001 up until last season and has had a ton of at-bats against Verlander, but the former MVP is now a bench player in this late stage of his career.

If Marlins manager Don Mattingly decides to insert the sweet-swinging lefty into the lineup, it’s worth nothing that he’s 18-for-62 against Verlander with a double, a triple, a home run and a walk.

LEADING OFF: 'Utley Rule' draws ire, Ortiz climbing charts
April 6, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

---

BY THE BOOK

Three days into the season, baseball's new ''Chase Utley Rule'' is already under fire. The new decree replaced Toronto's go-ahead run with a game-ending double play in the Rays' 3-2 win on Tuesday. ''Maybe we'll come out wearing dresses tomorrow,'' furious Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said. ''Maybe that's what everybody's looking for.''

CHART CLIMBING

David Ortiz will move into sole possession of 26th place on the career homer list with his next long ball. Big Papi tied Hall of Famer Eddie Murray with his 504th homer Tuesday and also picked up his 585th double, matching Rafael Palmeiro for 17th place. Clay Buchholz and the Red Sox face Carlos Carrasco and the Indians.

POCKET ACE

Marlins star Jose Fernandez gets the ball in Miami's second game after he was passed over for Wei-Yin Chen on opening day. Miami said it pushed Fernandez off the opener to help limit his innings in his first full season back from Tommy John surgery. The 23-year-old threw 64 2/3 innings in his return last season.

SICK STUFF

Oakland's Sonny Gray finally makes his season debut against the White Sox after being scratched Monday because of food poisoning that sent him to the emergency room. Gray went 14-7 with a 2.73 ERA last season, when he had a bout of salmonella that hospitalized him for several days. This case wasn't considered nearly as serious, though the team said he had lost some weight.

FIRST LOOK

Japanese star Kenta Maeda gets his first start with the Dodgers after signing a $25 million, eight-year deal that could be worth $106.2 million if he stays healthy. Maeda averaged exactly 200 innings per year over his final seven seasons with Hiroshima while working in a six-man rotation. He'll oppose Andrew Cashner and the Padres in his first major league start.

COMEBACK KID

Tyler Chatwood's long road back to the majors concludes when the Colorado Rockies' right-hander starts against Arizona, his first big league appearance in two years. Chatwood, who underwent two Tommy John surgeries, looked strong this spring. The Diamondbacks counter with left-hander Patrick Corbin, who had his own Tommy John surgery in 2014. This season, he's been cleared of all restrictions.

HOME IMPROVEMENT

Wrigley Field's iconic marquee is scheduled to be installed after an offseason restoration that included structural repairs and cosmetic work. Restored statues of Ron Santo, Billy Williams and Harry Caray were installed Monday outside the Cubs' ballpark in Chicago. The Ernie Banks statue is scheduled to be reinstalled on Friday. The work is part of an ongoing multiyear transformation of the ballpark and surroundings that includes a new home clubhouse this season.

FAMILIAR FACES

The finale of the season-opening series between Seattle and Texas will feel like the end of a family reunion for several Mariners. New manager Scott Servais said the Rangers started his ''second career'' in player development. Bench coach Tim Bogar also spent time in the Texas organization, initially replacing Ron Washington when the franchise's winningest manager resigned suddenly late in the 2014 season. Seattle DH Nelson Cruz became a star slugger as the Rangers went to the World Series in 2010 and 2011, and Leonys Martin spent his first three full seasons with Texas before an offseason trade. Joaquin Benoit was in the Texas bullpen for eight seasons starting in 2001.

DECISION TIME

Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred said he expects to rule soon on possible discipline for Colorado Rockies shortstop Jose Reyes regarding an offseason incident with his wife. Hawaii prosecutors dropped charges last week and said his wife was not cooperating. Reyes is currently suspended with pay under baseball's new domestic violence policy.

Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

Odds to win the college football national title this coming year.......

6-1-- Alabama-- What else is new? When in doubt.......

7-1-- Oklahoma/Clemson-- Tigers are breaking in a new QB.

10-1-- Ohio State/Michigan-- Year 2 of the Harbaugh era in Ann Arbor.

12-1-- Baylor-- Hopefully their players will be healthier this season.

15-1-- Notre Dame/Florida State/Tenessee/LSU

25-1-- Michigan State-Ole Miss-Stanford

**********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud......

13) Dodgers 7, Padres 0-- San Diego is first team ever to get shut out in its first three games of a season- they've been outscored 25-0 and if I was a Padre fan, it would tough for me not to think the season was over already.

If ever a team needed a series at Coors Field, it is the Padres- they play the Rockies in Denver starting Friday.

12) Dodgers are first team since the 1963 Cardinals to open a season with three straight shutouts- the '43 Cardinals started season with 26 consecutive scoreless innings. Alex Wood gets the nod or LA against the Giants tonight.

11) Colorado's rookie SS Trevor Story has four HRs in his first three games; he is the first player EVER whose first four big league hits were all home runs and he hasn't played at Coors Field yet.

10) Victor Martinez didn't start either game in Miami because they don't the DH in NL parks, but he pinch-hit in both games and homered both times, once rghty and once lefty. Pretty impressive.

9) Since John Hart took over the Atlanta Braves after the 2014 season, they've made 28 trades involving 89 players.

8) I still don't understand why pitchers bat 8th; it is nonsensical, but if Reds are going to bat their pitchers 8th, then they have to bat Joey Votto leadoff, right? He needs to get as many at-bats as possible on a bad team.

7) Yesterday was first time since May 9, 2014 that Miami Marlins, had both Jose Fernandez and Giancarlo Stanton in the same lineup on the same day.

6) Back when the Milwaukee Brewers played at outdoor County Stadium, when the Brewers hit a homer, mascot Bernie Brewer slid down a slide into a huge fake beer mug- it was very cool. Since the Brewers moved into a domed stadium, Bernie slides down a slide onto a ramp-- no fake beer mug.

Why? The damn ballpark is named Miller Park, as in Miller beer!!!!!

5) Arizona Diamondbacks loaded the bases 13 times in three games against the Rockies this week, thats an ominous nimber for a team with very shaky pitching.

4) Aubrey Dawkins transfers from Central Florida to Michigan, where he will play for his dad, former Stanford coach Johnny Dawkins, who is now at UCF.

3) Trump Hotel in Las Vegas doesn't have a casino in it.

2) Former Florida QB Will Grier transfers from the Gators to West Virginia, where he will be eligible to play starting in 2017.

1) Philadelphia 76ers finally put GM Sam Hinkie out of his misery, firing him and letting him say he "resigned", which he did in a 13-page, 7,000 word document that hopefully will guarantee he never gets another job in pro basketball.

This overeducated nitwit screwed up the Sixers so badly- he spent a first round pick on Joel Embiid, who played 23.1 mpg in his entire 28-game college career, his only season ended early by a sore back. He has yet to play one minute in the NBA.

Why did this tick me off? Because I never played college basketball, so I root for guys who rose thru the ranks and got great jobs. Hinkie has set back the cause of people like this ten or twenty years.
