Pirates, Reds clash again

April 15, 2014

Pittsburgh (6-6) at Cincinnati (4-8)

First pitch: Tuesday, 7:10 p.m. ET
Sportsbook.ag Line: Pittsburgh -115, Cincinnati +105, Total: 7.5

After a historical power performance on Monday, the Pirates and Reds continue their series with game two on Tuesday night.

These clubs met on Monday night and had to suspend the game due to rain after the sixth inning with a tie game of 7-7. The suspended contest will resume action at 5:30 p.m. ET tonight. If the last three innings are anything like the first six, the ending will be explosive, as the two teams combined to hit an incredible 10 home runs, including three separate occasions of back-to-back homers by the Pirates. This was only the third time this has been done, while the 10 homers were the most in the majors since 2006. Pittsburgh hit six of the bombs, bringing its season total to 18 (T-3rd in MLB).

Neil Walker was responsible for two of the home runs and now has four on the year, which is surprising, as he has averaged just 13.5 HR per year since 2010. The Reds have struggled in the early going of 2014 and could not win any of their first four series. Their bats are coming alive though, and after they put 12 runs on the board Sunday against the Rays, they hit four home runs and scored seven runs over the first six innings on Monday.

The pitchers who are expected to tame these hot hitting offenses will be 23-year-old phenom RHP Gerrit Cole (2-0, 3.46 ERA) for the Pirates and RHP Mike Leake (1-1, 2.45 ERA) for the host Reds.

This matchup has been dead even over the previous two seasons with the two clubs splitting 38 games between each other while Cincinnati holds a slight edge at home (10-9).

Recent trends show that Pittsburgh is 24-9 (.727) after having lost four or five of its previous six games since the beginning of last year, while Leake has gone 29-10 (.744) versus teams whose hitters strike out seven or more times per game, and the Pirates are fanning 8.5 times per game so far on the season.

Gerrit Cole has been one of the more heralded prospects over the past few years and he has lived up to his billing thus far. In his 2013 rookie campaign, he went 10-7 with a 3.22 ERA (1.17 WHIP) while striking out 7.7 batters per nine innings as a 22-year-old. He’s already showed that he is ready to be a top-of-the-rotation pitcher for the Bucs for years to come. Over his first two starts in 2014, Cole has earned a win both times while striking out 10 Chicago Cubs batters and allowing four runs (3 ER) in his last outing.

He has yet to face Cincinnati in his young career, but will need to be sure to be careful against 1B Joey Votto who is a career .324 batter against right-handers. The other power lefty in the Reds lineup, OF Jay Bruce, is much better against righties (.265 BA) than he is against lefties (.235 BA) but is hitting just .179 in 39 at-bats overall this year while striking out 11 times (12 walks) and hitting two home runs (8 RBI).

The Pirates' bullpen has been fantastic up until this point in the season, going 4-1 while putting up a 2.48 ERA but has been successful in just 3-of-5 save opportunities. Closer Jason Grilli (1.80 ERA, 3 saves) has gone 3-for-4 in his save chances so far, but has had trouble with his control, walking four batters in his first five innings of work.

Mike Leake is not a big strikeout pitcher, averaging just 5.9 K/9 over his career, and has just six in 14.2 IP in his first two starts this year. He gets plenty of groundballs though, and will rely heavily on his defense to provide support for him over the entire year. Leake put together a very impressive effort against the reigning NL Champion Cardinals in his last start, going eight scoreless frames while allowing just four hits. He’s also had previous success when facing the Redbirds, going 5-3 (7-8 team record) with a 3.79 ERA (1.30 WHIP) and has received a win in each of his past three starts against them. Leake has allowed just four total runs in those three games (18.2 IP) while striking out a total of 13 batters with only four walks.

One of the stars in Monday’s game, 2B Neil Walker, has gone 9-for-28 (.321) with a homer and 11 RBI in this matchup and is not the only player to put up great numbers against the righty, as C Russell Martin is 9-for-19 (.474, 1 HR, 3 RBI) against him in his career. OF Andrew McCutchen is only 9-for-40 (.225) with 9 K’s against Leake, but does have 2 HR and 6 RBI when facing him.

One area where Cincinnati has a clear disadvantage in this game will be its relievers, as the team has combined for a 5.29 ERA with 21 strikeouts and 16 walks over just 27.2 innings. Aroldis Chapman threw a 25-pitch bullpen session on Monday before the game and will watch as Jonathan Broxton (0-0, 0.00 ERA), who also just returned from injury, works the ninth inning for the time being. He has saved 111-of-153 games (73%) so far in his career.

Teheran has been money for Braves in NL East

When it comes to battles within their own division, the Atlanta Braves want none other than Julio Teheran on the mound.

Teheran has won his past six games against the NL East. In the one start against an NL East opponent (Nationals) this year, Teheran went 7.0 innings with six strikeouts with only two earned runs.

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but......

13) It is April 16 as I type this; my car is covered with an inch or two of snow; why any right-thinking human would live in the northeast is beyond me.

12) Lot of fuss is being made because Miami Heat didn't try too hard in a game they needed the other day to win the #1 seed in the East. Fact of the matter is this: only way the #1 seed really matters is if they faced Indiana in the Eastern finals. The way Indiana has been playing, they ain't winning two playoff series, so thats that.

Keeping Lebron James fresh is more important than getting home court advantage in a series that probably will never happen.

11) 20 pitchers have already gone in for Tommy John surgery this season, and the season is two weeks old. Thats a lot of injured pitchers.

10) Montreal Canadiens are the only Canadian team in the Stanley Cup playoffs;last time that happened was way back in 1973.

9) Jackie Robinson retired when the Dodgers traded him to the Giants, their rival; Robinson didn't want to play for the Giants, which makes it weird that their players all wear number 42 to honor him. Plus, San Francisco is one of three MLB teams (SF-StL-Arizona) that doesn't have an African-American player on its team.

In all, there are only 67 African-Americans in the big leagues right now; there are 16 guys from Cuba, and they have to defect to come here to play.

8) Herm Edwards found his calling in ESPN's studio; he is very good; outspoken, upbeat, fun to listen to.

7) That said, it is amazing how much attention ESPN gives the NFL; the draft is still three weeks away, the schedule isn't even out yet, but they have a daily show. There is only so much you can talk about college kids working out for pro teams.

6) California's new basketball coach is Cuonzo Martin, who felt unappreciated at Tennessee, so he bolted for the west coast. Not many people in Knoxville are that sad, but they're probably annoyed this happened after Bruce Pearl went to Auburn.

Tennessee administration better be careful hiring the new coach; players have said Martin was unappreciated by Tennessee people, so they were in his corner. A new coach is going to have to win over Martin's former players.

5) Eldrick Woods is 15-1 to win US Open, but Notah Begay, who played college golf with Woods, said Woods might not play until after the Open. Futures bets are losers if the player doesn't play, so caution is advised where Woods is concerned.

4) FOX will be televising the US Open starting in 2015; its two lead announcers will be Joe Buck/Greg Norman. Does Buck have to announce every event on FOX? I'm surprised he doesn't work NASCAR races. Norman should be good.

3) A's 10, Angels 9-- Oakland's bullpen is having trouble closing games, but Josh Donaldson pulled this game out with a game-winning double in the 11th inning, as the A's stepped on the Angels' halos for the second night in a row. Mike Trout had tied the game with a 2-run homer in the ninth.

2) Mets' leadoff hitter Eric Young reached base in the first inning in each of his last six games- Mets play better on the road than they do at home.

1) Cody Clark is a bullpen catcher for the Kansas City Royals; he played in 16 big league games LY for the Astros at age 31, his cup of coffee in the big leagues. In those 16 games, Clark went 4-38, which is why he's a bullpen catcher now, but one of the hits came against Jason Vargas of the Angels.

Vargas is now pitching for the Royals; wonder if he remembers giving up a hit to one of his team's bullpen catchers?

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud.......

13) Chicago Cubs played a twinbill in the Bronx Wednesday and didn't score in either game, losing 3-0/2-0, to fall to 4-10. Wait til next year.

Cubs' payroll this year is $92,677,368; player making most money from the Cubs this year is Alfonso Soriano, whom the Cubs are paying $19M to play for Bronx, who are also paying him $5M. Oy.

Only guy who is actually on the Cubs who makes more than $6M this year is the awful pitcher Edwin Jackson, who is somehow making $13M. Yikes.

12) If you get a chance, check out SportsCenter for highlights of Nolan Arenado playing 3B for the Colorado Rockies-- he is a defensive wizard, a tremendous guy with the glove. He made three superior plays, just in Wedsnesday's game.

11) Chicago White Sox lost 6-4 in 14 innings Wednesday; they had to use 2B Leuny Garcia to pitch the 14th inning, because they ran out of relief pitchers. You have to be a terrible manager to run out of pitchers after 13 innings in a game with the DH, where you don't pinch-hit for pitchers.

Seven White Sox relievers before Garcia got only 18 outs total; Pale Hose pitchers walked 15, struck out only five- they threw 131 balls, 144 strikes. Terrible.

10) On the other hand, Braves won 1-0 at Philly, in a rare double complete game; Julio Teheran allowed only three baserunners, Cliff Lee threw 128 pitches in defeat, striking out 13, allowing 11 hits. Don't see games like that much anymore.

9) Memo to mayor of Albany: please pave Colvin Avenue, its a disgrace. When you drive and swerve to avoid potholes is one thing; there are no potholes on this busy street, the whole pavement by east entrance to Armory Garage is decimated.

If the mayor ever drove her car on this street, it damn sure would get paved.

8) Milwaukee Bucks, the worst team in the NBA, sold for $550M and will stay in Wisconsin, where they are hoping for a new arena. They should hope for a lot of new, better players instead. $550M is a lot of cash for a dismal team.

7) Capping off a totally dysfunctional season, the Knicks signed Lamar Odom on Wednesday; Mike Woodson will probably be glad to get fired. Phil Jackson gets the benefit of the doubt since he was a tremendous coach, and there probably isn't a lot of downside to signing Odom, but it just looks strange. Odom is 34, has had a ton of personal problems- whats the point?

6) Why do some baseball teams have captains? They're not necessary; you'll find that leaders emerge on a team, they can't be chosen by management.

5) Miami Marlins are a bad team, Arizona is playing horribly right now, but the Cubs make both of those teams look like the '84 Tigers.

4) The McDonald's by my house was knocked down and a new one is being built on the same site; my question is this: What happens to the people who work in that McDonald's? Are they on vacation, do they get re-assigned to other McDonald's until the new building is finished? I'm curious about this.

3) 19 of 30 NBA teams came in under their season win/loss total.

2) Four of the Angels' last six games have gone extra innings; no one needs a day off Thursday more than the Anaheim bullpen- it is first time since 1975 the Halos had four extra inning games on one homestand.

1) No team scored more than six runs Wednesday; in 15 games, no game had more than five runs scored total in the first five innings. Part of it is the cold weather, but a lot of it is there is a lot less power and speed in the game now.
