Wednesday's Late Tips

April 9, 2014

Favorites have been rolling in baseball over the last few days, posting a 16-5 mark since Monday. On Tuesday, the ‘chalk’ compiled a 9-5 record with the Nationals and Blue Jays each being the highest favorites on the board (both won). The biggest underdog to cash on Tuesday was the White Sox (+140), who blew out the Rockies as road underdogs, 15-3. Tonight’s action features another full card, including three late-night contests.

Tigers at Dodgers – 10:10 PM EST

Detroit: 4-2
Los Angeles: 6-3

Since starting the season at 4-0, the Tigers have dropped consecutive games, including last night’s 3-2 defeat to the Dodgers in 10 innings. Max Scherzer and Dan Haren each put together terrific outings, but Carl Crawford’s RBI double in the 10th inning gave the Dodgers their second straight win since consecutive losses to the Giants. Detroit’s offense was limited to five hits, while Miguel Cabrera went 0-for-4.

Josh Beckett makes his first start of the season for the Dodgers, as the righty struggled last season with Los Angeles losing seven of his eight outings. In five starts at Dodger Stadium last season, the Dodgers went ‘over’ the total each time, while Beckett has won just twice in 15 starts since getting traded to Los Angeles in 2013.

Anibal Sanchez (0-0, 4.50 ERA) counters for the Tigers, as the righty lasted only four innings in his season debut against the Orioles. Detroit beat Baltimore, 10-4 as -160 home favorites, as Sanchez scattered two hits and allowed two earned runs in four innings of work. Since the All-Star break last season, the Tigers have won six of Sanchez’s eight road starts, while Sanchez didn’t allow a run four times in that stretch.

Angels at Mariners – 10:10 PM EST

Los Angeles: 3-5
Seattle: 5-2

The Mariners came into the season with raised expectations following the signing of Robinson Cano to a mega-deal and Seattle hasn’t disappointed. Out of five victories this season, the M’s have beaten the Angels four times already, including Tuesday’s 5-3 triumph as -120 home favorites. Seattle erased an early 3-0 deficit to hold Los Angeles scoreless over the final eight innings, as the Mariners have gone ‘over’ the total in all four games against the Angels.

Garrett Richards (1-0, 1.80 ERA) is responsible for the Angels’ first win of the season, tossing five scoreless innings and allowing one earned run in an 11-1 blowout of the Astros. The last time the Los Angeles right-hander faced the Mariners at Safeco Field last August, Richards was masterful in a 2-0 victory as a +160 underdog, limiting the M’s to four hits in seven scoreless innings.

Roenis Elias (0-0, 1.80 ERA) makes his second career start for the Mariners, as the southpaw picked up a no-decision in his debut at Oakland in a 3-2 defeat. Elias limited the A’s to just two hits and one earned run in five innings of work, but Oakland rallied from a 2-0 deficit to beat Seattle in 12 innings. The Angels are hitting just .221 against left-handed pitching this season, but have hit the ‘over’ seven times in eight games.

Diamondbacks at Giants – 10:15 PM EST

Arizona: 2-8
San Francisco: 6-2

Arizona has dug itself a deep hole through 10 games, winning just twice, which includes a rally from a four-run deficit against San Francisco at home last week. The Diamondbacks were tripped up by the Giants on Tuesday at AT&T Park, 7-3 as Tim Hudson shut down Arizona for the second time in less than a week. The Giants have beaten the D-Backs four times this season in five tries, as San Francisco sends out a former Cy Young Award winner to the mound.

Tim Lincecum (0-0, 6.00 ERA) received a no-decision in his season debut at Arizona last Thursday, but the Giants rallied for five runs in the eighth inning to stun the D-Backs, 8-5 as +110 underdogs. Lincecum gave up four earned runs and eight hits in six innings, including home runs to Paul Goldschmidt and Mark Trumbo. Since last August, the Giants have won four of Lincecum’s last five starts at AT&T Park, while San Francisco is 3-0 in his past three outings against Arizona.

Bronson Arroyo (0-0, 4.20 ERA) shut down the Giants’ bats for nearly five innings against Lincecum and the Giants last Thursday, but the veteran didn’t figure in the decision in his Arizona debut. Arroyo was pulled after recording one out in the fourth inning, while giving up five hits and two earned runs. Arroyo beat the Giants twice last season as a member of the Reds, including a complete-game shutout at AT&T Park last August, 11-0 as a +115 underdog.

Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

-- Josh Hamilton hurt his thumb, is out 6-8 weeks. Bad news for the Angels.

-- Wisconsin-Milwaukee got a lousy APR score, is ineligible for postseason play this year, after winning the Horizon tournament last month.

-- Victor Martinez caught for the first time this year, hit game-winning homer in 10th inning as Detroit outlasted the Dodgers 7-6 in LA.

-- Pacers won at Milwaukee despite sitting their starters, taking top seed in East back since Miami lost in Memphis.

-- Atlanta held off the Mets 4-3; Ervin Santana was impressive in his first start in the National League.

-- There are 24 first-time entrants at The Masters this year. A lot.

*****

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but........

13) An unnamed baseball executive floated the idea of seven-inning major league games with Buster Olney this week; this is similar to the idea Charlie Finley had 45 years ago, when he suggested a walk be three balls and a strikeout two strikes.

Myself? I like baseball the way it is; if you want to shorten games, cut out some of the TV commercials (egads!?!?!?) or don’t let managers/pitching coaches go to the mound to visit pitchers. Those two things along would make a big difference.

12) NFL can't possibly think people get excited about the release of their preseason schedule; its the regular season schedule we want. Hopefully within ten days.

11) Nets went 4-0 vs Miami this season, with three wins by a single point; they are only third team in NBA history to beat the same team three times by a point in the same season. Brooklyn-Miami playoff series would be very interesting.

10) Weather Channel is back on DirecTV; not even sure why it was off, but they had some other bogus weather channel on in its place. I use my IPhone for the weather now. Groundskeepers in Oakland should watch Weather Channel, so they know when to cover the field. You know, in case it rains.

9) UConn was 100-1 to win the national championship on Selection Sunday.

Speaking of UConn, Ryan Boatright got offered a scholarship by USC…….when he was in 8th grade. Former coach Tim Floyd (now at UTEP) has a sharp eye, knew the kid was going to be a real good player.

8) Marlins’ pitcher Jacob Turner got scratched from his Wednesday start and is on the DL because he hurt his shoulder during batting practice Tuesday. Turner is 4-51 at the plate in the majors. Oy.

7) Lakers scored 130 points Tuesday…..and lost by 15.

6) Speaking of the Lakers, Marshall hasn’t named its new basketball coach, fueling speculation it’ll be Marshall alum Mike D’Antoni, once the Lakers can him at the end of the regular season. One of the Herd’s better players wants to transfer, but the school won’t release him, probably figuring D’Antoni will be able to re-recruit the kid, once he gets to Huntington.

5) Pirate closer Jason Grilli’s agent is former big league slugger Gary Sheffield. Really, Sheffield is an agent now.

4) Nike increased the prices of its most expensive NFL jerseys, the ones closest to what the players wear, from $250 to $295. The less expensive replica jerseys are staying the same price- they actually sell more of those.

3) You can get 80-1 in Las Vegas that Phil Mickelson will get a hole-in-one this week at Augusta; that seems low to me, but that’s the number.

2) Ryan Braun has 23 RBI in 21 career games at Citizens Bank ballpark in Philly. He had seven RBI in Tuesday’s game. Brewers are already 5-0 on the road.

1) Speaking of three-HR games, Hank Aaron only had one in his brilliant career, against the Giants in 1959, at old Seals Stadium.

He also never hit 50 homers in a season; hard to believe, but true.

Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

-- Ripoff alert: DirecTV is still advertising the NBA League pass for $59; what a bunch of weasels-- damn season ends in five days. Playoffs are on regular TV.

-- NHL package includes some first round playoff games. NBA's doesn't.

-- Pretty obvious Michael Pineda had pine tar on his hand while pitching against Boston last night; he didn't make a big effort to hide it, either.

-- Memphis is 46-32, tied in loss column with Dallas for last playoff spot in the west; they've played two less games than the Mavericks.

-- Knicks are two games behind Atlanta with four games left for the last playoff spot in the east.

-- Minnesota Gophers scored a goal with 0:00.6 left to break North Dakota's heart and win the national semifinal game- they play Union in the national final.

*****

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random stuff with the weekend here........

13) If you were a major league position player, why wouldn’t you want to play for the Rockies? Your offensive numbers have to be better in the thin air, seems like a great place in the summer, they’ve got a good stadium, whats not to like?

12) Speaking of which, it took until April 10 for Rockies’ CF Charlie Blackmon to get picked up in our 16-team keeper fantasy league. He had to go 16-34 (.471) before some team gobbled him up. I have to use my monthly pickups to shore up my pitching, plus I have the annual Jose Reyes injury problems, so I couldn’t add another OF. Curious to see how long Mr Blackmon keeps hitting.

11) There are 16 Cubans currently in the major leagues; four of the 16 play for the White Sox.

10) In basketball statistics, an assist is a pass that leads to a made basket; there is subjectivity to what is and is not an assist.

When I was doing stats at UAlbany from 1978-83, I developed a stat called assist opportunity, which was basically is what is referred to today as the “hockey assist”, the pass that leads to the pass, or a pass that would’ve been an assist had the shot been made, or the pass that leads to two foul shots.

Lot of times, it provides insight not only into who creates more scoring chances, but the level of the scoring chances. If a guy is creating layups for teammates with his passes, he will have more assists, less “assist opp’s”.

9) Weird seeing Union College in college hockey’s Frozen Four; during my married years in the 90’s, my ex’s nephews played lot of youth hockey in Achilles Rink, on the Union campus. Union is a really good academic school, not very big; the coach there has done a great job.

8) Once watched my ex’s nephew play a game at Union on a Sunday, the day after he broke his wrist- they cut the glove so the casted wrist would fit inside. Poor kid rushed with the puck, split two defensemen and got knocked to the ice, falling on the broken wrist. You could hear him crying from the other end of the arena; last one of those games I went to- the kid was 12 or 13.

Youth hockey remains the craziest thing I’ve observed in person; if you think Little League parents are crazed, you ain’t seen nuthin’ yet.

7) Eli Manning had ankle surgery this week, is out for six weeks, which means he’ll miss lot of the Giants’ off-season workouts. I know guys like to avoid surgery if they can, but shouldn’t this surgery have happened earlier in the offseason?

6) A quality start in the major league is listed as “six innings, three or less earned runs”, not really that great an effort. Hall of Fame pitcher Bert Blyleven has his own standard for a quality start: seven innings, two or less earned runs. Blyleven is an excellent analyst on Twins’ games. I’m going to track the “Bert QS” and will post results here from time to time.

5) Mr Tanaka in the Bronx allowed three runs in seven IP in each of his first two starts, but with 18 strikeouts and only 15 baserunners. He should win lot of games on a good team; Bronx’ closer situation and their lineup being less potent than it has been will hurt his win total, but it is obvious he's pretty good.

Remains to be seen if he is worth all that money, though; he certainly isn’t dominant but got 35 misses on 107 swings in his two starts- the 35 misses leads MLB.

4) There are 132 Waffle House restaurants,, just in the Atlanta area. Was in one in Florida once, by Disney World; waitress got mad at the manager, threw her apron at him and quit, leaving the place without a waitress. Mercifully, we hadn’t ordered yet, so we got the hell out of there before chaos reigned.

3) Last hole-in-one on 12th hole at Augusta during The Masters was Curtis Strange in 1988. There have been only three Masters aces on #12 overall; tough par-3.

2) Cal Bears targeted Xavier coach Chris Mack to replace Mike Montgomery; Mack is a Xavier alum. Big blow for the Musketeers if he leaves there. Won’t look good for the Big East either, if one of its coaches bolts for a middle-rung Pac-12 program, especially after Buzz Williams bolted Marquette for Virginia Tech.

1) Do you think Gary McCord watches the Masters? They banished him from the CBS air waves during Masters week years ago because he is irreverent, which was weird. Free speech doesn’t exist everywhere in this great land of ours.

Nats, Braves meet again

April 11, 2014

Washington (7-2) at Atlanta (6-4)

First pitch: Friday, 7:35 p.m. ET
Sportsbook.ag Line Atlanta -125, Washington +115, Total: 7

A great National League East battle continues on Friday night as the top two teams from the division last season meet up for the second time in 2014.

Many picked the Nationals as not only the team to win the NL East this season, but also go to the World Series for the first time since the team moved to Washington in 2005. The Nats have run off four straight wins by a combined score of 24 to 9, wrapping up a three-game sweep of the Marlins on Thursday with a 7-1 rout. Strong starts from Gio Gonzalez (6 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 5 K’s) and Stephen Strasburg (6.2 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 12 K’s) earned two of the wins, while the team’s offense backed a poor start by Jordan Zimmermann with 10 runs in Wednesday's win.

Atlanta has set the bar high after taking the division in 2013 but has faltered of late and cannot be happy after losing 2-of-3 games at home against the Mets. The Braves lost the rubber match of the series on Thursday night by a score of 6-4 as they were shut down by the Mets bullpen. Looking to extend the Nationals winning streak to five games will be RHP Tanner Roark (1-0, 3.00 ERA) who will be starting only his seventh career game and will be matched up against one of the most promising young pitchers in the game, RHP Julio Teheran (1-1, 2.77 ERA).

These two clubs already played a series this season, as Atlanta took 2-of-3 games on the road and held the potent Nationals offense to just four total runs in the three contests. Going back to the beginning of 2012, Atlanta holds a 23-17 record in this matchup, but is surprisingly only 10-9 when playing at home.

Some trends to keep an eye on include the fact that Washington is 72-49 (.595) in road games versus teams whose hitters strike out seven or more times per game since the start of the 2012 season. Also, the Braves have gone 21-5 (.808) in home games when playing against a team with a winning record since the start of last year.

Tanner Roark was never a top prospect, so his strong numbers since starting for the Nationals last year has been a pleasant surprise. He will not blow anyone away with his fastball -- averaging just over 91 MPH in his season debut -- and depends on the defense behind him to be on their toes. Roark had a successful start to 2014 when he took on the Mets, going six frames while allowing six hits, two runs and striking out five (3 walks). Roark did have one start against the Braves last season and they had no answer for him as he went seven scoreless innings while giving up just two hits and fanning six batters (1 walk).

The only starters on Atlanta who have a hit against the 27-year-old are 2B Dan Uggla (1-for-3) and OF B.J. Upton (1-for-2), and those two have combined to go 11-for-67 (.164) with 24 strikeouts to start the 2014 campaign. Roark will need to be careful when facing 1B Freddie Freeman (.419 BA) though, as he leads the Braves in hits (13) with two of them leaving the yard, and has walked six times compared to whiffing in just four at-bats.

One of the reasons many pundits like Washington so much this season is because of its strong bullpen, which has allowed just six runs in 34 innings (1.59 ERA) and has an incredible 48 strikeouts in that time (12.7 K/9). The Nats continued their success on Thursday night, backing Strasburg’s great start with 2.1 frames of scoreless pitching while mowing down five. Closer Rafael Soriano (0.00 ERA, 2 saves) already has six strikeouts in just three innings of work, and has been perfect in his two save opportunities.

Julio Teheran has been one of the Braves top prospects for years now and will look to improve in his sophomore season after going 14-8 with a 3.20 ERA (1.17 WHIP) and striking out 170 batters last year. He pitched well in each of his first two outings of the year (13 IP, 10 H, 4 ER, 8 K’s), but is only 1-1 as his offense gave him no run support in the season opener. He’s already faced Washington six times in his young career, compiling a 3-1 record (5-1 team record) with a 2.92 ERA (1.32 WHIP). His three victories came over his past three starts against them, where he lasted an average of 6.1 innings while giving up just three runs (2 HR) and getting five strikeouts per contest.

His biggest challenge in the Nationals’ lineup has been OF Bryce Harper (5-for-13, 2 doubles, 2 HR, 3 RBI), while SS Ian Desmond (6-for-17) and OF Denard Span (7-for-18) have also had their way against Teheran. One of Washington’s hottest hitters this season, OF Jayson Werth, is only 2-for-13 (.154) with six strikeouts against the 23-year old ace.

Unlike the Nationals, the Braves relievers have not been effective, pitching to a 4.09 ERA while getting a save in four of their five chances. Craig Kimbrel (2.45 ERA, 4 saves) is arguably the best closer in baseball and has gone 4-for-4 in save chances while striking out eight batters in 3.2 innings on the mound this season.
