Vin Scully heads into final week
September 19, 2016

LOS ANGELES (AP) As an 8-year-old in the Bronx, Vin Scully would grab a pillow, put it under his family's four-legged radio and lay his head directly under the speaker to hear whatever college football game was on the air in 1936.

With a snack of saltine crackers and a glass of milk nearby, the red-haired boy was transfixed by crowd's roar that raised goosebumps. He thought about how much he'd like to be at the game. As time went on, he thought he'd like to call the action himself.

His youthful aspirations came true at 22 when he was hired by a CBS radio affiliate in Washington, D.C. The following year, he joined Red Barber and Connie Desmond in the Brooklyn Dodgers' radio and television booths. In 1953, at age 25, Scully became the youngest person to broadcast a World Series game, a mark that still stands.

Now 88, Scully is heading into his final week behind the mic at Dodger Stadium before concluding his career on Oct. 2 in San Francisco, where the Dodgers end the regular season against the rival Giants. His 67 years with the Dodgers make Scully the longest-tenured broadcaster with a single team in professional sports.

''I will miss it,'' he said Monday. ''I know that dramatically.''

Scully discovered his lifelong love of baseball walking home from grade school. He passed a Chinese laundromat and saw the score from Game 2 of the 1936 World Series: Yankees 18, Giants 4.

''My first reaction was, `Poor Giants,''' he recalled, noting he lived near the team's home at the Polo Grounds and attended many games for free after school. ''That's when I fell in love with baseball and became a true fan.''

Fittingly, his last game will be 80 years to the day he saw that score in the window.

''It seems like the plan was laid out for me and all I had to do was follow the instructions,'' Scully said.

Has he ever.

Though the years, Scully has entranced generations of baseball fans with his dulcet tones as he spins stories about the game and its players while working alone on the air. He still relishes the crowd's cheers, a sound he says is ''like water out of a showerhead.''

Scully credits the birth of the transistor radio as ''the greatest single break'' of his career. In 1958, he accompanied the Dodgers when the franchise relocated to Los Angeles. Fans had trouble recognizing the lesser players during the team's first four years in the vast Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

''They were 70 or so odd rows away from the action,'' he said. ''They brought the radio to find out about all the other players and to see what they were trying to see down on the field.''

That habit carried over when the team moved to Dodger Stadium. Fans at the games held radios to their ears and those not present listened from home or the car, allowing Scully to connect generations of families with his words.

''God has been so good to me to allow me to do what I'm doing,'' said Scully, a devout Catholic who attends Mass on Sundays before heading to the ballpark. ''A childhood dream that came to pass and then giving me 67 years to enjoy every minute of it. That's a pretty large thanksgiving day for me.''

The Dodgers plan to honor their second-longest tenured employee (behind former manager Tom Lasorda) starting Tuesday night with a Scully bobblehead giveaway.

Friday is an appreciation day for Scully with a pregame ceremony featuring speakers from his career and a postgame fireworks show set to the top calls of his career.

The first 50,000 fans at Saturday's game against Colorado will receive a limited edition solid bronze coin. On the front is an image of Scully with his signature greeting of ''It's time for Dodger baseball.''

In San Francisco, the Giants will honor Scully at his final game. Two Bay Area TV stations will carry an inning of his broadcast as stations in other cities have done this season.

All the hoopla is ''a little embarrassing'' to Scully, who reluctantly allowed the Dodgers to rename the street leading to the stadium's main gate in his honor in April.

''I've never wanted to get out in front of the game,'' he said.

Scully was adamant about not having an extended farewell. To his surprise and delight, players and managers have come to him. Throughout the season, they've made the long trek from the visiting clubhouse in right field to his fifth-floor broadcast booth in the press box named for him, bringing gifts.

''He is just a different human being,'' Cubs manager Joe Maddon recently said. ''That's like the window to the world up there, just sitting in his booth. He is really kind and gracious. You have to be all of that to survive that many years and you have to be good.''

At the start of each series, the umpires turn to face Scully's booth and tip their caps to him.

''I'm deeply touched and overwhelmed with gratitude,'' he said.

For the last time at home on Sunday, Scully will open his broadcast with the same reassuring greeting: ''Hi everybody, and a very pleasant good afternoon to you wherever you may be.''

''I don't think I'm going to stress anything about me,'' he said. ''I will concentrate on Denver as if they're challenging the Dodgers for first place. I think I'll be OK.''

When he walks away next month, Scully will go home to his wife, Sandi, and delight in the company of his 16 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He'll still watch some baseball because a couple of his grandsons play.

''I'll try very hard to just stay back and be the very normal guy that I am,'' he said. ''I just want to be remembered as a good man, an honest man, and one who lived up to his own beliefs.''

Tempers flare, Dodgers rally past Giants 2-1 in 9th inning
September 19, 2016

LOS ANGELES (AP) Adrian Gonzalez hit a game-winning double in the ninth inning, and the Los Angeles Dodgers rallied Monday night for a testy 2-1 victory over the San Francisco Giants that increased their NL West lead to six games.

Two innings after a shoving match broke out when tempers flared between Madison Bumgarner and Yasiel Puig again, the Dodgers' comeback in the ninth began with pinch-hitter Andrew Toles' leadoff single.

Corey Seager singled past diving second baseman Joe Panik on a two-strike pitch from Javier Lopez (1-3), allowing the speedy Toles to reach third.

Justin Turner's single tied the game, and Gonzalez followed with a drive to deep right field that eluded Hunter Pence.

Joe Blanton (6-2) won in relief after the latest bullpen flop by the struggling Giants followed a tense pitchers' duel between Bumgarner and fellow ace Clayton Kershaw.

Both benches and bullpens cleared during a seventh-inning scuffle.

Bumgarner fielded a slow tapper by Puig along the first base line and threw him out to end the inning. The left-hander punched his glove emphatically and said something that didn't appear to be cordial.

Puig glared back and responded, and soon both teams massed near first base before the dustup ended without any punches.

The late-game theatrics overshadowed the latest matchup between two of the game's top left-handers, Bumgarner and Kershaw.

Bumgarner allowed one hit over seven scoreless innings, struck out 10, walked none and retired his final 10 batters.

Kershaw gave up an unearned run and three hits in his third start since returning from a back injury. He struck out seven and walked one. The three-time NL Cy Young Award winner retired seven in a row before leaving.

The Giants scored their lone run during an odd sequence in the third.

With two outs, Eduardo Nunez reached on an infield single to second. Kershaw dived and tried to backhand the ball, but it got by him and Chase Utley's throw pulled Gonzalez off first base as Nunez slid headfirst into the bag.

Nunez stole second and was safe at third on another headfirst slide after catcher Yasmani Grandal's throw sailed to the right of second. Nunez scored on Kershaw's wild pitch that bounced in front of the plate and over Grandal's head.

The Giants led the division by 6 1/2 games at the All-Star break but lost the lead to the Dodgers on Aug. 21. Since the lead changed hands, San Francisco has lost 16 of 27 and the Dodgers have won 18 of 28. They play each other five more times over their final 12 games.

FLIPPING PUIG

The crowd gasped when Puig flipped over the low wall along the right field side chasing a foul ball by Pence in the seventh. Puig went all the way around and crashed into the seats. He got up quickly and returned to his position in right, apparently unhurt.

DODGERS MOVE

Los Angeles recalled infielder Micah Johnson from Triple-A Oklahoma City. He appeared in two games with the Dodgers in April. In the minors, Johnson batted .261 with 26 steals, five homers and 37 RBIs in 120 games. He hit safely in all nine of Oklahoma City's games in the Pacific Coast League playoffs as the club advanced to the championship series.

TRAINER'S ROOM

Dodgers: LHP Hyun-Jin Ryu (elbow) and RHP Brandon McCarthy (hip stiffness) will pitch in a simulated game Tuesday. ... LHP Alex Wood (elbow surgery) will be activated Tuesday. The team wanted an extra day to finalize the corresponding roster move. ... Manager Dave Roberts said LHP Scott Kazmir (neck inflammation) shouldn't be affected by a finger blister that he developed Sunday in a simulated game. ... LHP Julio Urias will pitch out of the bullpen during the Giants series. ... The team hasn't decided when LHP Brett Anderson (finger blister, back surgery) will return.

UP NEXT

Giants: RHP Johnny Cueto (16-5, 2.86 ERA) has a 1.69 ERA in his last three starts against the Dodgers. The two-time All-Star pitched his fifth complete game of the season in his last start on Thursday against St. Louis.

Dodgers: LHP Rich Hill (12-4, 2.06 overall after trade from Oakland) is 3-1 with a 2.70 ERA in six career starts against the Giants, limiting their hitters to a .219 batting average and striking out 31 against nine walks in 40 innings.

Playoff-bound Cubs planning ahead
September 20, 2016

CHICAGO (AP) While a bunch of teams are fighting for playoff spots all over baseball, the Chicago Cubs are feeling their way through rare territory.

The Cubs clinched the NL Central title a full three weeks before their first playoff game, giving the organization plenty of time to rest players and analyze possible postseason opponents, but also making for a tricky stretch when it comes to staying sharp when there isn't as much at stake.

After the Cubs dropped three of four against the Brewers last weekend, manager Joe Maddon met with his hitters before Monday night's 5-2 victory over Cincinnati and talked to them about making the most of the final part of the season.

''It's unusual being in this position like we are right now,'' Maddon said after the meeting. ''So you've got two weeks of baseball, major league baseball, left in September, so let's work on some stuff. Let's work on things that we need to work on individually or as a group. Like I said, not unlike a spring training situation, while within the context we're just going out there playing the same game, we're trying to win this game.''

The Cubs' win over the Reds and the Nationals' loss at Miami made it a seven-game lead for Chicago over Washington in the race for home-field advantage throughout the NL playoffs. The Mets, Cardinals and Giants are fighting for the two wild cards, making one of them the likely division series opponent for Maddon & Co.

''I probably will watch Washington more than anything right now,'' Maddon said. ''That's the one that we're shooting for, is to have the best record.''

While the wild cards likely will go down to the final few days of the season, the Cubs will have organizational meetings Tuesday and Wednesday to discuss possible playoff matchups and how they might line up for each series. They have scouts watching each potential postseason opponent.

''Each team presents its own set of challenges and might have roster implications one way or another, too,'' president of baseball operations Theo Epstein said.

The Cubs also are planning for their four-day break between the end of the regular season and their playoff opener on Oct. 7, which Maddon also covered in his meeting with the hitters.

''That's a long time, so we have to really get our minds right over the next couple, three weeks to really be prepared properly for that first game,'' Maddon said, ''and I wanted it to start today.''

Epstein said the Cubs are considering having a simulated game during the four-day break before Game 1 of the Division Series, providing a chance for the starters and relievers to get some work in and for the hitters to see live pitching.

The 42-year-old Epstein has never been in a situation like this before, with the team clinching so early, but said he likes it compared to the alternative.

''I think it's what you make of it,'' he said. ''To me, it's a lot better than having to push your guys extra hard and put more innings on guys' arms and not giving them enough rest and then maybe waking up and being worn down.''

Chicago had to wait until Sept. 25 to clinch its 2015 wild card, and then made it all the way to the NL Championship Series before it was swept by New York.

The early clinch also allows the Cubs to go as slow as they want with any players with health issues. Maddon said outfielder Jorge Soler, who left Friday's 5-4 victory over the Brewers with tightness on his right side, could be available to pinch hit on Tuesday. Key reliever Pedro Strop, who is coming back from knee and groin injuries, is on track to pitch in a simulated game soon.

Tuesday's Diamond Notes
September 20, 2016

Hottest team: Mariners (9-3 past 12)

The Mariners have won nine of their past 12 to get right back into the thick of the wild-card race in the American League. In Monday's series opener they ran into a buzzsaw known as Marco Estrada, as he carried as a no-hitter into the seventh inning. The Mariners battled back with two in the bottom of the ninth to shave the Jays' lead to 3-2 with two outs, but Seattle just couldn't get over the hump. In Tuesday's game they'll try to deny J.A. Happ his 20th victory. The Jays are 22-6 in Happ's past 28 starts, but they're just 2-5 in their past seven games against a team with a winning record. The Mariners have won eight of the past 10 home starts by Hisashi Iwakuma, and 16 of his past 22 overall.

Coldest team Yankees (0-5 past five, 1-7 past eight)

The Yankees had chemotherapy in early August, having a cancer removed by the name of Alex Rodriguez. Once the team went into remission, they flourished with a group of young, hungry ball players. A seven-game winning streak from Sept. 4-10, moving within three games of the lead in the American League East. They have tumbled down the standings with their recent cold streak, as those said young players have shown their inexperience with the pressure mounting. The Yankees head into Tuesday's play 8 1/2 games behind the AL East leaders. New York has dropped four in a row on the road, and they're also 0-4 in their past four vs. left-handed starting pitcher.

Hottest pitcher: Jon Lester, Cubs (17-4, 2.40 ERA)

Lester entered the season with question marks after it was discovered he had some floating bone chips in his elbow which could potentially affect him at any time. He has rolled to 17 wins in 21 decisions with a 2.40 ERA and 1.02 WHIP over 184 innings, and he has been even better lately. He is 3-0 with a 0.38 ERA with a 0.67 WHIP over his past three outings while striking out 19 and walking just three in the past 24 innings. The Cubs are 18-3 in his past 21 starts against teams with a losing overall record, and they're 4-0 in his past four outings against divisional foes.

Coldest pitcher: Edinson Volquez, Royals (10-11, 5.40 ERA)

Volquez works in Cleveland against the AL Central-leading Indians. He is 4-7 with a 5.82 ERA in 13 road outings with a .290 opponent batting average, and he is 1-2 with a 4.38 ERA in four outings against the Indians with 15 walks over 24 2/3 innings. Volquez was 8-8 with a 4.85 ERA in 19 starts before the All-Star break, but it's been all downhill from there. Since the break Volquez has won just two of his 12 starts with a 6.36 ERA and the opposition is hitting .327. Last time out he was hammered for eight earned runs, four walks and seven hits in just 3 1/3 innings against the Athletics Sept. 15.

Biggest UNDER run: Mariners (6-1-1 past eight)

The Mariners have been on quite the 'under' kick lately, partly due to an offensive drought. They have averaged just 2.4 runs per game over the past five outings, scoring two or fewer runs in four of the past five. They face Happ in Tuesday's contest. The under is 5-2 in his past seven starts against teams with a winning overall record, and 3-1-1 in his past five against American League West division battles. The under is 5-0 in Iwakuma's passt five home outings, and 4-1 in his past five starts overall.

Biggest OVER run: Royals (19-3 past 22, 7-1 past eight road games)

The Royals have been involved in quite a few 'over' results lately, as their offense has come alive and their pitching has struggled at times during the span. Volquez's struggles are documented above. The 'over' is 7-1 in their past eight road games, and 9-2 in their past 11 against divisional foes. In addition, the 'over' is 4-0 in Volquez's past four outings, 6-0-1 in his past seven against divisional foes and 4-1 in his past five road starts. The over is also 6-1 in Kansas City's past seven against right-handed starting pitchers.

Matchup to watch: Orioles vs. Red Sox

Tuesday's battle between the O's and BoSox should have a postseason feel, as both clubs have been on fire lately. The Red Sox look to build on their 6-2 mark in their past eight trips to Oriole Park at Camden Yards. Boston is 5-0 in their past five games against divisional foes, and 5-0 in their past five road games vs. RHP. They're also 5-1 in their past six road games, and 8-3 in their past 11 road outings against a team with a winning record. The difference in this one might be Eduardo Rodriguez. The BoSox are just 4-10 in E-Rod's past 14 outings, and 3-7 in his past 10 against teams with a winning record. The O's have won each of Kevin Gausman's past seven home starts, and 5-1 in his past six overall.

Betcha didn’t know: The battle between the Arizona Diamondbacks and San Diego Padres is one of just three games featuring both teams under .500 on the season. In fact, both teams have identical records of 63-87. San Diego's record likely would be a lot better if they faced Arizona more frequently, as the Padres are 5-1 in their past six against the Diamondbacks, and 4-1 in their past five at home against the Snakes.

Biggest public favorite: Rangers (-170) vs. Angels

Biggest public underdog: Giants (+155) at Dodgers

Biggest line move: Orioles (-115 to -130) vs. Red Sox

BALTIMORE (AP) David Ortiz broke open a tight game with a three-run homer in the seventh inning, and the Boston Red Sox beat the Baltimore Orioles 5-2 Tuesday night for their sixth straight victory.

Jackie Bradley Jr. also homered for the Red Sox, who stretched their lead over Baltimore in the AL East to five games. After sweeping four games from the Yankees, Boston has won the first two of this pivotal four-game series.

Trey Mancini homered in his major league debut with the Orioles, who began the day tied with Toronto for the two AL wild cards. Kevin Gausman (8-11) allowed five runs and 10 hits in 6 1/3 innings.

Eduardo Rodriguez (3-7) pitched 6 1/3 innings of two-run ball for his first win in 11 starts since July 16. Craig Kimbrel worked the ninth for his 28th save.

YANKEES 5, RAYS 3

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Rookie slugger Gary Sanchez hit his 17th homer in 42 games this season, a three-run shot in a four-run seventh inning for the Yankees.

The banged-up Yankees began play 4 1/2 games behind Baltimore and Toronto for the two AL wild cards.

Sanchez gave the Yankees a 5-2 lead with his drive off Brad Boxberger (4-3).

Mark Teixeira hit a solo shot in the fourth for New York, which was swept in a four-game series at Boston last weekend and had lost seven of eight overall.

Luis Severino (3-8) pitched 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief to earn the win. Dellin Betances got three outs for his 12th save.

TIGERS 8, TWINS 1

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Matt Boyd breezed through eight innings, backed by home runs from James McCann and Miguel Cabrera, and Detroit stepped forward in the AL wild-card race.

With Baltimore's loss to Boston, the Tigers cut the deficit between them and the second spot to 1+ games with 12 to go.

Boyd (6-4) allowed three hits, including Robbie Grossman's seventh-inning homer.

McCann, in the designated hitter role for the injured Victor Martinez, connected for a three-run shot during Detroit's a four-run sixth against Hector Santiago (12-9).

CARDINALS 10, ROCKIES 5

DENVER (AP) - Adam Wainwright was shaky on the mound and shined at the plate with a career-high four RBIs, helping St. Louis move into a tie for the top NL wild card.

The free-swinging Wainwright lined a two-run double in the second inning and brought in two more with a bloop single in the fifth. Matt Adams and Jedd Gyorko homered to help the Cardinals pull even with the New York Mets, who lost at home to last-place Atlanta for the second straight night.

Wainwright (12-9) gave up four runs in 5 1/3 innings.

Daniel Descalso, Charlie Blackmon and Gerardo Parra homered for Colorado, and Jorge De La Rosa (8-9) allowed eight runs - seven earned - in 4 2/3 innings.

INDIANS 2, ROYALS 1

CLEVELAND (AP) - Pinch-hitter Brandon Guyer hit a game-ending RBI single, helping Cleveland inch closer to the AL Central title.

Guyer's two-out hit off Joakim Soria landed just fair in the right-field corner and scored Coco Crisp. Guyer was the third pinch hitter of the inning used by manager Terry Francona.

Cleveland led Detroit by seven games in the division entering Tuesday. The Indians haven't won the AL Central since 2007.

The Royals, the reigning World Series champions, will be eliminated from contention in the division if they lose to Cleveland on Wednesday night.

Alex Gordon singled in a run for Kansas City, and Brian Flynn (1-2) got the loss.

Andrew Miller (9-1) got five outs for the win.

RANGERS 5, ANGELS 4

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Rookie Nomar Mazara hit his 20th homer in another testy game with multiple ejections and the Rangers moved closer to their second consecutive AL West title.

Texas (90-62) cut its magic number to two to clinch the seventh division title in franchise history.

Mazara hit a 438-foot drive off rookie Daniel Wright (0-4), a two-run shot in the fourth that put the Rangers up 4-3.

Nick Martinez (2-3) worked 3 1/3 scoreless innings in relief, and the right-hander made a spectacular play in the fifth, when he reached behind his back for a no-look snag of Andrelton Simmons' hard liner and turned it into a double play.

Sam Dyson worked the ninth for his 35th save in 40 chances.

MARLINS 1, NATIONALS 0

MIAMI (AP) - Giancarlo Stanton homered to back a strong outing by Jose Fernandez, who pitched eight innings and struck out 12 for the Marlins.

Fernandez (16-8) allowed three hits without a walk to outduel Washington's Tanner Roark (15-9) who pitched seven innings and allowed one run.

David Phelps pitched the ninth for his fourth save in 10 chances.

The Nationals were held to four hits in their fourth consecutive loss.

Stanton connected for his 27th homer in the sixth inning. Stanton also homered in Monday's 4-3 win.

BRAVES 5, METS 4

NEW YORK (AP) - Mets nemesis Julio Teheran pitched seven more sparkling innings and the last-place Braves blunted New York's bid to extend its NL wild-card lead.

The Mets nicked the Braves' bullpen for three runs in the eighth but couldn't complete the comeback. The Braves have the worst record in the NL, yet have won four straight.

Teheran (6-10) gave up five hits and left with a 5-1 lead. Dating to the final time he saw the Mets last season, he's 3-0 with a 0.73 ERA in five starts against them.

Jim Johnson pitched the ninth for his 16th save in 19 chances.

Robert Gsellman (2-2) lost in his fifth major league start.

CUBS 6, REDS 1

CHICAGO (AP) - Jon Lester overcame an injury scare to throw seven strong innings, and the Cubs moved closer to securing the NL's best record.

Lester (18-4) extended his scoreless streak to 21 innings before Jose Peraza's RBI triple in the fifth. He stayed in after Joey Votto's comebacker in the sixth left him with a welt on the wrist of his glove hand.

The Cubs' 96th win reduced their magic number to three over Washington for clinching home-field advantage throughout the NL playoffs.

Josh Smith (3-2), making a spot start in a bullpen game for the Reds, allowed one run and three hits in three innings. Brandon Phillips had two hits for Cincinnati.

PIRATES 6, BREWERS 3

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Andrew McCutchen, Jody Mercer and Josh Bell each drove in two runs, and Pittsburgh kept its faint playoff hopes alive.

The Pirates have won fifth of six to improve to .500 (75-75) for the first time since they were 69-69 on Sept. 8.

Jared Hughes (1-1) pitched an inning for the win and Tony Watson worked the ninth for his 14th save.

Milwaukee right-hander Matt Garza was charged with five runs and eight hits in four-plus innings.

PHILLIES 7, WHITE SOX 6

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Odubel Herrera homered and drove in three runs, leading Philadelphia to the win.

Tommy Joseph and Roman Quinn added two hits apiece and combined to drive in three runs for the Phillies. Herrera, who hits between Joseph and Quinn in the lineup, is 15 for 28 in his last seven games.

Melky Cabrera hit a three-run homer for the White Sox, who have lost four straight. James Shields (5-18), winless since July 26, allowed six earned runs and nine hits in 5 1/3 innings.

Trailing 7-3 in the ninth, the White Sox pulled within one on a two-out wild pitch and a two-run double from Adam Eaton. But Michael Mariot got Tim Anderson to ground out for his first career save.

Philadelphia's Jake Thompson (3-5) gave up three runs and four hits over five innings.

Wednesday’s List of 13: Mid-week musings…..

13) New rule in NFL this year; offensive coordinator up in booth can talk directly to the QB thru the radio in his helmet. Should wind up helping offenses, cutting out the middle man on the sidelines.

Jon Gruden said last night that not many teams are utilizing the new rule yet. Why? It should especially help teams with young QBs.

Eagles coach Doug Pederson is calling plays; they said Monday that he had never called plays in a game before Week 1 against the Browns.

12) Remember the scene in Moneyball where Billy Beane is in a room with all his scouts, and basically dismisses how they do their jobs?

Well, the Jonah Hill character in Moneyball was Paul DePodesta, who is now working for the Cleveland Browns (he was a WR in college at Harvard), and apparently, that same meeting happened for real in Cleveland last winter, with lot of the Browns’ old-school scouts saying they preferred Carson Wentz over Jared Goff or a trade of the pick- those scouts got fired before the draft.

11) Tuesday, Adam West (Batman) turned 88, David McCallum (Ducky on NCIS) turned 83; they’re both still very active, great for them.

10) Backup QB for the Patriots this week? WR Julian Edelman, who was a QB in college at Kent State. Jimmy Garoppolo will dress, but doubtful his shoulder is good enough for him to actually play, other than handing off.

9) Akron beat Marshall 65-38 last week; Marshall plays Louisville this week. Uh oh. Louisville is a freakin’ powerhouse; they might go over the listed total of 74 by themselves.

8) Miami Dolphins are 0-2, but they played good teams on the road, and both of those teams’ starting QBs were injured in the game. Miami could be an underrated team moving forward.

7) Dak Prescott’s salary for this season: $545,848; Sam Bradford’s WEEKLY salary: $411,765.

6) Seattle Seahawks had nine offensive lineman dressed Sunday; six of the nine weren’t Seahawks last year. Very unusual turnover for a good team.

5) San Francisco Giants are tied for last NL Wild Card spot, despite blowing 30 saves this year, and eight just in the first 19 days of September.

4) Baseball analysts are now saying the rise in use of maple bats are responsible for rising home run rates. Barry Bonds used a maple bat when he played, but was in the minority. More players are using them now.

3) In Marlins’ Park in Miami, there is a nightclub behind the left-field fence, and there is a bar on a walkway above that.

Monday night, Giancarlo Stanton hit a ball over the Budweiser sign that hangs over the bar that is above the nightclub. They said 466 feet; it is good that Stanton has come back from his leg injury– he isn’t playing on consecutive days yet, but he wasn’t expected back at all when got hurt.

2) Marlins-Nationals played 13 of their first 42 games against each other this year; then didn’t play again from May 22-September 18. Weird.

1– Unusual college basketball road trip: Louisiana-Lafayette is in southwest Louisiana, by the Gulf of Mexico. Ragin’ Cajuns have a basketball road trip that first goes to Minnesota, then to Montana State. There is no easy way to get from Bozeman, MT to Lafayette, LA. Dress warm, fellas.

(E) - A team has been eliminated from the wild-card race. Complete division standings can be found here.
y - Clinched wild-card title
z - Clinched playoff berth
() - A team's Elimination Number; first-place team's Magic Number is same as second-place team's Elimination Number

-Tiebreaker games will be played to determine Division Championships, even if the two tied Clubs are assured of participating in the Postseason. If a Division Championship tiebreaker game is necessary, the head-to-head record between the tied Clubs will determine home-field advantage. If the head-to-head record is tied, then division record will be the next tiebreaker.

-In the event of a tie for the division championship or a Wild Card spot, a one-game playoff will break the tie. If three or four clubs are tied for first place in a division at the end of the regular season, and the two non-division winners would NOT be Wild Card clubs, a playoff will be played among the teams in question.

-If two Clubs are tied for both Wild Card berths, home-field advantage will be determined by the head-to-head record between the tied Clubs. If the head-to-head record is tied, then division record will be the next tiebreaker.
