Spartans at Wolverines

February 23, 2014

Michigan State (22-5 SU, 15-10 ATS) at Michigan (18-7 SU, 12-10 ATS)

Sportsbook.ag Line & Total: Michigan -1

No. 13 Michigan State will look to continue its hot shooting on Sunday as it travels to Ann Arbor to take on No. 20 Michigan in a game that could determine the Big Ten regular season title.

These two teams squared off in East Lansing earlier in the season on Jan. 25, with the Wolverines emerging with the 80-75 upset victory, to improve to 5-2 SU (4-3 ATS) in the past seven meetings of this in-state rivalry. However, the Spartans' second leading scorer, PF Adreian Payne was out due to injury in the game. Michigan did a terrific job shooting the ball from deep in that matchup, connecting on 11-of-19 from behind the three-point line. Michigan SG Nik Stauskas finished the game with 19 points, connecting on 5-of-6 attempts from deep. SG Gary Harris did everything he could do to keep the Spartans in the game, tallying 27 points (9-of-16 FG, 4-of-6 threes) and five rebounds.

Michigan State is coming off a 94-79 victory over Purdue on Thursday night to improve to 16-10 ATS overall, 10-4 ATS in Big Ten play and a perfect 8-0 ATS on the road. The Spartans were on fire from the outside, hitting a school record 17 three-pointers. Once again, it was Harris who led the way, scoring 25 points while hitting six threes.

Michigan (12-10-1 ATS overall) will be looking to bounce back from a 75-62 home loss to No. 21 Wisconsin in its most recent game last Sunday. The Wolverines compiled only five assists on 20 baskets and could not slow down the Badgers' offense, as Wisconsin turned the ball over only two times. SG Caris LeVert had a big game on the offensive end, finishing with 25 points (5-of-6 threes) and six rebounds.

As is the case with any Tom Izzo team, Michigan State has been strong on the boards this season, ranking 46th in the nation in rebounding with 38.0 RPG. This is also a very smart and unselfish club, with an outstanding 26 assists on its 30 made shots in the romp over Purdue, and it now ranks sixth in the country in assists with 17.5 APG. The problem with the Spartans offensively is that at times they have looked incredible (87.0 PPG in past three wins), but other times have struggled (56.3 PPG in past three losses).

Defensively, MSU ranks among the top-60 Division I teams in scoring defense (65.3 PPG, 56th), steals (7.4 SPG, 53rd) and blocks (4.8 BPG, 55th). There are plenty of weapons on this team to where it should not struggle scoring the ball.

While SG Gary Harris (17.8 PPG, 4.5 RPG, 2.8 APG) was the star of the night against Purdue, PF Adreian Payne (16.7 PPG, 7.5 RPG) is playing some terrific basketball now that he's fully healthy. He played just 22 minutes in Thursday's blowout, but still finished with 23 points (4-of-8 threes) and four rebounds.

His great long-range shooting (44% threes) forces opposing big men to play defense on the perimeter, opening up driving lanes for players like Harris and PG Keith Appling (13.9 PPG, 4.9 APG, 3.5 APG). Appling did not have a big game scoring against the Boilermakers (just one point), but he did a great job of running the team and finding the open shooters with nine assists. Appling is the key for this team and especially in this contest, as he will be matched up against Derrick Walton Jr., the freshman point guard of the Wolverines.

While SGs Nik Stauskas (16.7 PPG, 44% threes, 3.5 APG) and Caris LeVert (13.0 PPG, 40% threes, 4.5 RPG) are the best scorers on the team, the Wolverines are going to go as freshman PG Derrick Walton Jr. takes them (8.4 PPG, 39% threes, 2.9 APG). In the loss to the Badgers last Sunday, Walton went scoreless with just one assist in 33 minutes. In the first matchup against the Spartans last month, he finished with 19 points, six rebounds and four assists in what was the best game of his career. For a freshman to do that at Michigan State is very impressive, and it shows the potential that Walton Jr. has.

Another guy that needs to step up for Michigan is PF Glenn Robinson III (12.8 PPG, 4.3 RPG). He is an exciting player when he is out in the open and attacking the rim, but in this game he must be a factor on the boards, as Robinson secured just one rebound in 26 meetings versus MSU last month. In that Jan. 25 meeting, the Wolverines were able to win the rebounding battle 35-29, but that was without Payne playing for the Spartans.

Michigan currently ranks 274th in the nation on the glass (32.9 RPG), but is one of the best shooting teams in the nation (47.9% FG, 25th in Div. I), while scoring 75.0 points per game (82nd in nation). If Michigan is able to win the rebounding battle again, then the Wolverines have a great chance of pulling off a rare season sweep over the Spartans.

Sunday's Pac-12 Action

February 22, 2014

Saving the best for last in men’s college basketball this weekend, the Pac-12 will take center stage on Sunday night with three intriguing matchups. At the top of the list is Arizona State against Utah. The Sun Devils are still in the hunt for the regular season conference title, but they cannot afford any more losses with just six games left on the slate.

Arizona State Sun Devils at Utah Utes (ESPNU, 8:00 p.m. ET)

The highlight of the Sun Devils’ season so far was a 69-66 overtime victory over then-No. 2 Arizona as 5 ½-point home underdogs on Feb. 14. They have had their share of disappointments as well with an 8-5 straight-up record in conference play. Arizona State has failed to cover in seven of its last 10 games as part of an overall record of 12-12 against the spread. The total has stayed UNDER in 14 of 23 games this year.

Jahii Carson leads the Sun Devils in scoring with 18.8 points per game and Jermaine Marshall has also been very productive with 15.8 points while shooting an impressive 42.5 percent from 3-point range. The team is averaging 75.8 PPG and shooting 45.7 percent from the floor.

Utah hung tough in this past Wednesday’s 67-63 loss to Arizona, but still could not cover as a 3 ½-point home underdog. The Utes have now gone 3-5 SU in their last eight games and they are 2-4 ATS in their last six outings. The total ended as a PUSH against the Wildcats on a 130-point closing line after going OVER in six of their last nine games.

The Utes match up well against Arizona State with 78.1 PPG and a field goal percentage of 49.7 percent. Delon Wright is averaging 16 points, 6.7 rebounds and 5.3 assists and Jordan Loveridge has also been a force with 15.2 points and a team-high 7.5 rebounds.

Utah comes into this conference clash as a four-point home favorite over the Sun Devils.

Arizona State won the first meeting this season 79-75 just barely failing to cover the 4 ½-point closing line at home. The home team in this series has now won eight of the last nine meetings SU, but Utah has paid off in the last six meetings ATS. The total went OVER the 135 ½-point line in that first game after staying UNDER in the previous four meetings.

USC Trojans at California Golden Bears (FOX Sports 1, 8:00 p.m. ET)

It has been one disappointment after another for the Trojans this season in conference play with just one SU victory against 12 losses. Their current losing streak reached seven games with a dismal 80-59 pounding at the hands of Stanford as 14-point road underdogs this past Thursday. USC has now failed to cover in its last four contests and it is a costly 3-10 ATS against the Pac-12 this year.

The Trojans’ offense has been effective for the most part with an average of 71.3 points led by Byron Wesley’s 17.6 PPG. Unfortunately, they have one of the worst defenses in Division I. USC is giving-up an average of 75.8 points a game, but this number has climbed its way to 81 points in conference play.

California made some noise earlier this month by ending Arizona’s 21-game winning streak in a 60-58 victory as a six-point home favorite, but its overall play has been spotty at best. The Golden Bears are just 3-5 SU in their last eight games including a 77-69 loss to USC on Jan. 22 as eight-point road favorites. They are 8-5 SU in the Pac-12 and 17-9 SU overall but they have fallen to 12-13 ATS after failing to cover in six of their last eight games.

The Golden Bears are averaging 74.6 points and pulling down 37 rebounds. Justin Cobbs has been the team’s leading scorer with 15.7 PPG and Richard Solomon has led the way under the boards with an average of 10.2 rebounds.

California opened as a 14 ½-point home favorite to avenge that earlier loss to the Trojans.

USC has gone 9-3-1 ATS in the last 13 meetings including a perfect 5-0-1 mark ATS on the road against the Golden Bears. The total has gone OVER in 16 of the last 22 meetings overall and in seven of the last nine meetings at Cal.

Washington State Cougars at Oregon Ducks (Pac-12 Network, 9:00 p.m. ET)

The Cougars are another team that has been beaten up in conference play with a SU record of 2-12. They were hammered by Oregon 71-44 in the first meeting this season as 6 ½-point home underdogs. Washington State has been a bit more competitive since that loss with a 3-3 mark ATS (1-5 SU) after failing to cover in six of its first eight conference games. The total has stayed UNDER in eight of 14 games in the Pac-12.

Scoring has been a major issue for Washington State with an average of just 62.6 PPG while shooting 40.9 percent from the field. Defensively, the Cougars are allowing an average of 66.7 PPG, but opposing teams have exceeded this number in six of their last seven games.

At one time Oregon was not only ranked No. 10 in the AP Top 25, it was considered a serious contender for the Pac-12 title. A perfect 12-0 SU run through the nonconference portion of its schedule gave way to a 5-8 SU crawl through the conference so far. The Ducks have posted back-to-back SU victories over Oregon State and Washington in their past two games in an attempt to turn things around. They have covered in three of their last four games, but overall they are a costly 4-9 ATS in conference play.

Oregon remains one of the highest scoring teams in the nation with 83.5 PPG and it is shooting 47.1 percent from the field. The Ducks have a foursome of players scoring in double figures led by Joseph Young’s 18.6 points. However they have had their issues slowing opponents down by allowing an average of 75.1 PPG.

The Ducks opened as 14 ½-point-point home favorites to complete the season sweep over Washington State.

Oregon brings six-game SU winning streak over the Cougars into Sunday’s matchup and a 7-3 edge ATS in the last 10 games. The total stayed UNDER the 134-point closing line in the first meeting this year after going OVER in three of the four previous games.

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday....

13) Duke 66, Syracuse 60-- Coaches preach poise to their players; well, coaches need to have poise too. When a bad call goes against you in a 60-58 game with 0:10 left, you don't have a childish meltdown and get thrown out of a game your kids still had a chance to win.

Syracuse played one true road game before New Year's and that was in New York City, where they have a ton of fans. Maybe if Orange played a road game now and then in pre-conference, they'd have more poise now.

12) Boise State 91, UNLV 90 ot-- Refs used replay to change a call, negating a Rebel basket at the buzzer. i watched the replay five times and could not tell which call was right. In that case, the call on the floor (good basket) is supposed to stand. It helps to be at home, I guess.

When UNLV coach Dave Rice was informed his team lost (got hosed), he did not act like a 4-year old who didn't get his ice cream. Classy guy.

11) Oklahoma State 84, Texas Tech 62-- Marcus Smart had 16 points, 10 rebounds as he returned from suspension and helped Cowboys end their skid at seven games. Bracketologists still have them in the field of 68.

10) Louisville 58, Cincinnati 57-- Russ Smith hit a jumper with 0:02.2 left to win this tense struggle, avenging an earlier home loss to the Bearcats. This was a lot like a tournament game.

9) Kentucky 77, LSU 76 ot-- Terrific game; LSU lost in part because their best player Johnny O'Bryant got really tired at the end-- he was 8-25 from the floor. Tigers are banged up, don't have much depth. Kentucky was 1-9 on the arc, still won, avenging an earlier loss in Baton Rouge.

8) Georgia State 80, UL-Lafayette 77-- Ragin' Cajuns had won six games in a row; they led by nine in second half, but 20-7 Georgia State had a 21-0 run to pull out their 20th win of the year. Sun Belt tourney is going to be good.

7) Wisconsin 79, Iowa 74-- Badgers started season 16-0, then lost five of six games, now has won five in a row. Even the good teans are fragile.

6) Florida 75, Ole Miss 71-- Marshall Henderson had 22 points in first half, zero in second half. Florida is now 14-0 in the SEC.

5) Ohio State 64, Minnesota 46-- Gophers were up 28-18 at half, then the second half happened. ESPN's Joe Lunardi had Minnesota as an 11-seed in NCAAs before this game- they're 4-8 in their last dozen games- their next two games are Iowa/Michigan. Good luck.

4) Miami 69, Boston College 42-- Eagles followed up win at Syracuse by getting bludgeoned by the 14-13 Hurricanes, who had lost six of previous eight games coming in. BC has to hire Bruce Pearl this spring.

3) New Mexico 58, San Diego State 44-- Lobos had huge week, winning big at UNLV, then dismissing Aztecs here. Teams meet again at Viejas March 8, and will probably play the next week in Vegas at the conference tourney.

2) Biggest upset of the day: Rhode Island 87 (+11) , St Bonaventure 78-- Rams snapped a 6-game losing streak with road win here.

1) Bad beat of the day: Syracuse (+6). Game ended in a push, but a lousy call nullified the tying hoop for Orange, then Boeheim went postal, got two technicals and Syracuse backers went fortunate to get the push.

I mean, you had a dog getting six points down 2 with the ball with 0:12 left, the game didn't go OT and you didn't win. Doesn't happen much.

Game of the Day: Michigan State at Michigan
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Michigan State Spartans at Michigan Wolverines (-2.5)

The race for first place in the Big Ten takes center stage Sunday when Michigan hosts rival Michigan State in one of the most anticipated of the 173 meetings between the teams. Both teams have exchanged wins and losses since the Wolverines picked up an 80-75 win at the Spartans on Jan. 25 to assume to the top spot in the conference at the time. No. 20 Michigan's see-saw ride continued with a 75-62 loss to Wisconsin on Sunday, as Caris LeVert tallied a career-high 25 points but received little support in the Wolverines' lowest-scoring effort at home since a 58-57 win over Michigan State last March.

The 14th-ranked Spartans have not won consecutive games since losing forward Branden Dawson to a broken hand prior to the meeting with Michigan last month, and Dawson remains unavailable after having the pins removed from the hand Friday. With its top rebounder and a standout defender still stuck on the sidelines, Michigan State stepped up its game on the perimeter in a 94-79 win at Purdue on Thursday. Gary Harris made six of the Spartans' school-record 17 3-pointers and finished with 25 points to lead the way.

TV:
12 p.m. ET, CBS

LINE HISTORY:
The Wolverines opened as 2.5-point home faves

POWER RANKINGS:
Michigan State (-12.4) - Michigan (-10.9) + Home Court (-3.0) = Michigan -1.5

INJURY WATCH:
Michigan State - Branden Dawson (Out - Hand), Michigan - Mitch McGary (Out - Back)

ABOUT MICHIGAN STATE (22-5 SU, 15-9-2 ATS, 13-13-2 O/U):
While Dawson remains out the Spartans will have the services of senior center Adreian Payne, who missed the first meeting between the rivals due to a foot injury, all part of an injury-plagued campaign for Tom Izzo's team. Payne is averaging 18 points and 6.8 rebounds in five games since his return, and guard Keith Appling produced nine assists in 25 minutes against the Boilermakers in his second game since coming back from a wrist ailment. If Appling continues to progress and Dawson's imminent return - which Izzo said could come in the Spartans' next game March 1 versus Illinois - occurs without a hitch Michigan State will look more like the team ranked second nationally in the preseason.

ABOUT MICHIGAN (18-7 SU, 12-10-1 ATS, 12-10-1 O/U):
Nik Stauskas scored 19 points in the win over the Spartans last month, but has struggled a bit in the Wolverines' ensuing 3-3 stretch. Stauskas, who leads Michigan in scoring at 16.7, is averaging 11.2 points on 40 percent shooting during the six-game swoon, one reason that the league's top shooting team has been held to 70 points or less in four of its last five affairs. LeVert has done his part to fill the gap by averaging 16.3 points and hitting 46.4 percent of his 3-pointers in the six-game span.

TRENDS:

* Spartans are 2-5 ATS in the last seven meetings in Michigan.
* Underdog is 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings.
* Spartans are 5-1 ATS in their last six vs. Big Ten.
* Wolverines are 5-2-1 ATS in their last eight home games.

CONSENSUS:
53 percent of bets are on Michigan -2.5.

Dog paying off in Michigan-MSU rivalry
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sunday features a big rivalry game in college hoops as Michigan hosts Michigan State. The dog has been a big winner for bettors in recent games as it has gone 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings between the two programs.

Oddsmakers have suggested a spread of Michigan -3 for this edition of the rivalry.

Top 10 - Stock Watch

February 25, 2014

Two weeks before conference tournaments begin and we have seen the Top 10 jockey positions plenty of times, especially at the top spot. With only a few weeks left before the NCAA Tournament, let’s see how many of the schools below can maintain their positions.

1) Florida: (25-2 SU, 11-11-1 ATS) - BUY

I think we can trust the Gators to win out the remainder of the season. They have lost two games, both on the road with a combined total of seven points. With road trips to Vanderbilt and South Carolina left on the schedule, Florida should roll into the SEC Tournament extremely confident.

2) Wichita State: (20-0 SU, 19-6-1 ATS) - HOLD

With an ATS record of 19-6-1, Vegas can’t seem to find a line high enough for the Shockers. Their last threat (if you call it that) is Bradley on the road, but the line is still double digits, giving an opportunity for a back door cover. I still believe holding on the Shockers until tournament time is the smart play.

3) Arizona: (25-2 SU, 16-10 ATS) - HOLD

The Wildcats aren’t out of the woods yet. Three of the four teams left on the schedule are considered “bubble teams.” However they have California and Stanford at home this week. Can Zona’ keep the intensity and energy up for these two important games?

4) Syracuse: (26-2 SU, 13-9-2 ATS) - SELL

The Orange has had a rough week and it’s not going to get any easier. After losing back-to-back games and nearly getting beat for the third time to Maryland, I believe their biggest challenge is yet to come…Virginia. This will be the third consecutive game on the road for Syracuse and it’s too much.

5) Kansas: (22-6 SU, 14-13-1 ATS) - SELL

The Jayhawks will have their hands full as they travel to Stillwater to play Oklahoma State this Saturday. The Cowboys desperately need this win. Kansas is 4-5 ATS on the road and I don’t see this record improving. I’m selling.

6) Duke: (22-6 SU, 17-10-1 ATS) - SELL

The Blue Devils finally get a chance to relax and play scrimmage ball against Virginia Tech this week. The problem for bettors is the line will be too high for comfort, so I have no choice but to hold on Duke. There will be plenty of opportunity to bet the Devils when they play the Tar Heels next week.

7) Louisville: (23-4 SU, 14-11 ATS) - HOLD

The Cardinals will have a tough matchup against Memphis on the road this weekend. However, in their last six games they have dominated opponents beating them by an average of 21 points. The Cardinals are hot, but this will be the Tigers most important game of the season.

8) Villanova: (24-3 SU, 17-8 ATS) - SELL

I’m not so much worried about Villanova playing Butler as I am Marquette, but the good news is they are both Philly. Getting crushed by Creighton for the second time, has me concerned that teams are figuring out how to play 'Nova, resulting in closer games the second time around.

9) Creighton: (23-4 SU, 16-10 ATS) - BUY

The Bluejays have shocked me on how well they have handled the transition to another conference. The difference in caliber of play between the Missouri Valley and Big East Conference are night and day. Creighton will win the Big East and Doug McDermott will get “Player of The Year” honors. Not a bad inaugural start.

10) Saint Louis: (25-2 SU, 9-15 ATS) – SELL

Although the Billikens have won plenty of games, they have a hard time covering spreads. Their last four games are 0-4 ATS. They get VCU on the road this week and Shaka Smart and the Rams will bring the “havoc” to make sure the trend continues.

Tuesday's Tip Sheet

February 25, 2014

**Florida at Vanderbilt**

-- Florida (25-2 straight up, 11-11-1 against the spread) took over the nation's No. 1 ranking Monday for the first time during the regular season since Feb. 12 of 2007. However, head coach Billy Donovan downplayed the significance and told the Gainesville Sun, "Anytime that happens, it's an honor. In reality, that means nothing for our preparation for Vanderbilt. I don't think our guys are playing for rankings."

-- As of early Monday night, most books had UF listed as an 8.5-point favorite for Tuesday's trip to Music City. The Gators own a 2-3 spread record in five games as road favorites.

-- Florida is coming off a 75-71 win Saturday at Ole Miss. UF failed to cover the number as a seven-point favorite because Martevius Newby buried a 3-pointer with 2.5 seconds remaining to give gamblers on the Rebels the ATS victory. The game was tied at intermission and most spots made the Gators 4.5 or five-point favorites for the second half, so Newby's trey also beat bettors who took UF at halftime.

-- Scottie Wilbekin scored 18 points and dished out seven assists at The Tad Pad. At this point, Wilbekin appears to be the favorite to win SEC Player of the Year honors. Michael Frazier II got up 200 shots Saturday morning in Oxford, leaving the hotel for the arena before the rest of the team. The work paid off as Frazier knocked down 5-of-10 from deep and finished with 17 points.

-- Vanderbilt (15-11 SU, 13-10-2) has made the most of what easily could've been a lost season. Along with Texas Tech's Tubby Smith, Kevin Stallings has done one of the more underrated coaching jobs in America this season. The Commodores lost three likely starters during the off-season, and then their leading scorer and starting point guard was dismissed from school in early January. Nevertheless, the 'Dores have remained extremely competitive and own a 7-7 record in SEC play. The .500 league record has come about despite the presence of only seven healthy scholarship players.

-- Despite trailing 32-25 at intermission of Saturday's game at Auburn, Vandy dominated the second half en route to a 67-59 win as a 4.5-point underdog. Dai-Jon Parker was the catalyst with a game-high 21 points. He drained 5-of-9 attempts from 3-point range.

-- Vandy has been a home underdog six times, posting a 2-3-1 spread record with a pair of outright wins over Tennessee and Missouri.

-- On the prospect of possibly beating the nation's No. 1-ranked team, Stallings told The Tennessean, “It would be very, very gratifying to be able to be victorious against a team of their caliber. But talking about it and wishing on it and all that kind of stuff is a lot different than doing it. It would take our best game of the season, unquestionably."

-- When these teams met at The O-Dome in Gainesville last season, Florida stroked Vandy 66-40 as a 19.5-point home 'chalk.' However, Memorial Gymnasium has been a venue where the Gators have enjoyed much success over the last several decades. The 'Dores beat UF 77-67 in the last meeting in Nashville two years ago.

-- The 'over' has hit in back-to-back games for UF, but the 'under' is 15-7-1 overall.

-- The 'under' has cashed in four consecutive Vandy games and nine of its last 10. The 'Dores have seen the 'under' go 17-6-2 overall, 8-3-2 in their home games.

-- Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN.

**Wichita State at Bradley**

-- As of late Monday night, most books had second-ranked Wichita State (29-0 SU, 19-6-1 ATS) listed as a 12-point road favorite.

-- Wichita State has won eight in a row over Bradley both SU and ATS, including a 72-50 win as a 17.5-point home 'chalk' on Jan. 14. Fred VanVLeet was the catalyst for the Shockers, producing 22 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the field. VanVLeet also contributed seven rebounds, three steals and three assists compared to just one turnover.

-- Gregg Marshall's squad has covered the spread in three straight games and five of its last six, including Saturday's 83-54 win over Drake as a 16-point home favorite. Tekele Cotton led the way for Wichita State with 21 points and seven steals. VanVleet added 15 points, six assists, five rebounds and three steals without committing a turnover. Darius Carter also had 15 points and blocked four shots.

-- Bradley (12-17 SU, 9-16-1 ATS) has won 11 of its 15 home games, going 6-5-1 ATS. The Braves ended a three-game losing slide both SU and ATS with Saturday's 55-38 win over Loyola-Illinois as 4.5-point home favorites. Walt Lemon Jr. led the winners with 16 points and five steals.

-- Bradley has been a home underdog four times this year, compiling a 2-2 record both SU and ATS.

-- Wichita State owns a 9-1 spread record as a road favorite. As double-digit road 'chalk,' the Shockers are 4-0 ATS.

-- The 'over' has hit in five consecutive Wichita State games to improve to 14-12-1 overall.

-- The 'under' has been an extraordinary money maker in Bradley games, cashing at a 20-4-1 overall clip. The 'under' is 9-2 in the Braves' 11 lined home games.

-- ESPN2 will have the telecast at 9:00 p.m. Eastern.

**B.E.'s Bonus Nuggets**

-- Missouri will be seeking revenge for an overtime home loss to Georgia when it invades Stegeman Coliseum in Athens on Tuesday night. The Bulldogs won a 70-64 decision as 11.5-point road underdogs back on January 8. Most books have installed UGA as a 1.5-point home favorite. Mark Fox's team is third in the SEC with a 9-5 league record, and it has won 12 of 14 home games while going 8-4 ATS.

-- Kansas State has lost six straight road games and its only true road win came at TCU. The Wildcats, who are No. 42 in the RPI Rankings, play Tuesday at Texas Tech in a pick 'em matchup. The Red Raiders are 10-5 SU and 8-4 ATS at home.

-- The 'under' is on an 8-1 run in Texas Tech games.

-- Syracuse shook off back-to-back defeats to win 57-55 Monday at Maryland. However, the Terrapins took the cash as four-point home underdogs. Tyler Ennis and C.J. Fair scored 20 and 17 points, respectively, to pace the Orange. Seth Allen hit six 3-pointers and scored 22 points for the Terps, but his off-balance 3-point attempt at the buzzer was off the mark.

-- After losing seven straight games and struggling through a 0-8 ATS slide, Oklahoma State has won a pair of games both SU and ATS over a 48-hour stretch. The Cowboys finished strong last night in Ft. Worth on its way to a 76-54 triumph as 13.5-point road favorites. Marcus Smart produced 17 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and five steals, while Phil Forte scored a game-high 23 points. --Texas Tech might be without Jaye Crockett tonight due to knee tendinitis. Crockett is expected to be a game-time decision ('questionable' officially as of 12:15 p.m. Eastern) vs. Kansas St. Crockett averages 14.3 points and 6.6 rebounds per game.

-- Seton Hall, a 5.5-point favorite tonight at DePaul, owns a 7-1 spread record in eight lined road games this year.

-- UF back-up freshman point guard Kasey Hill is 'doubtful' tonight at Vandy. Hill (5.6 PPG) will most likely miss his third straight game due to a groin injury.

Hot & Not

February 25, 2014

Winning and losing in college basketball betting is often a fine line. There are a number of teams in the nation who have been at the tops of their games for the last three weeks, covering at least five games in a row.

North Carolina Tar Heels (9-0 ATS L/9) – There just isn't a team in the land who has done more to help itself than North Carolina. The Heels have ripped off nine wins both SU and ATS in a row since losing to Virginia on the road, and in that mix include a couple important wins over teams like Pitt, FSU, and most important of all, Duke. There are still four games left in the regular season and plenty of work to be done, but at least the Tar Heels now know they are dancing even if they lost all of their remaining games.

Tulsa Golden Hurricane (7-0 ATS L/7) – If you want to try to find a dark horse team in Conference USA to perhaps steal the automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament, Tulsa might be that team. The Golden Hurricane are on fire, having won five in a row SU and seven consecutive from an ATS standpoint. Granted, they have been tearing through the bottom part of a weak conference, but the Golden Hurricane have some real talent. Don't let that 15-12 record fool you. This is a team which can beat the big boys in C-USA.

Fresno State Bulldogs (7-0 ATS L/7) – The Bulldogs have won six of their last seven games SU, including pulling upsets on the road against Air Force, Nevada, and most notably, Utah State. Fresno State has the chance to prove that it can play with the big boys these next couple games at home, as it hosts Boise State and San Diego State. All of a sudden if those two games are won and this team can close out the regular season at 17-14, there are going to be some very uncomfortable bubble dwellers in the Mountain West who definitely don't want to run into this squad in Sin City.

Southern Illinois Salukis (6-0 ATS L/6) – The MVC hasn't had the best of seasons, mainly because Wichita State has just mowed right through everyone. However, one of the rare teams to score a cover against the Shockers this season has been Southern Illinois, and that happened on the road just a few weeks ago. That was a part of a six-game cover streak for the Salukis. G Desmar Jackson is averaging over 19 points per game this season, but it is the defense, which has held five out of six foes (Wichita State being the exception) to 64 points or fewer, that’s made all the difference.

Nebraska Cornhuskers (5-0 ATS L/5) – It's not just the five straight wins and covers for the Huskers that have our attention. It's the fact that they are 11-1 ATS in their last 12 games, all of which have come in the tough to navigate through Big Ten. All of a sudden, five straight victories though, has this team back in the tourney mix after seemingly being dead in the water just a few weeks ago. Nebraska's defense is legit, and it just might carry Coach Miles’ kids into the dance this year

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.....

13) Was happy to see Dale Earnhardt Jr so excited Sunday night after he won the Daytona 500, his was pure joy. Lot of celebrities, they become too cool to show when they’re really, really happy, this was fun to watch.

12) There is too much speculation about who is in/out of the NCAA tournament, as if it were an ongoing selection process. ESPN reports Joe Lunardi’s stuff like it is fact; while he is usually very good with his analysis, it isn’t fact. “Oh, if Tennessee wins at Texas A&M, they’ll move into the field.” That type of “reporting” is just wrong. The committee will come up with the 68 teams in three weeks; those will be the facts.

11) Jadeveon Clowney ran a strong 40-yard dash at the Combine, somewhere between 4.47 and 4.53, depending on who you believe. Clowney didn’t have a strong senior year at South Carolina, but the success Vontaze Burfict had with the Bengals after a sub-par senior season at Arizona State will only help Clowney’s status. NFL Draft is May 8 and its going to be interesting.

10) Why wouldn’t a quarterback prospect throw at the Combine? What do they have to lose? Seems like agents are stifling the kids from showing their skills. If I was a prospect like Johnny Manziel, I’d want the whole league to see what I can do, let them know that I’m anxious to show off my skills. Guess that’s one of many reasons why I’m not an agent.

9) Lookalikes: golfer Victor Dubuisson and Brad Pitt, especially when they are wearing sun visors.

8) Included in Jim Boeheim’s post-game whining Saturday night was a complaint that the Orange had to play at Maryland last night after playing at Duke Saturday, while the Terrapins had Saturday off. Seems like a fair complaint, but the ACC ain’t trying do to Maryland any favors, seeing as they’re bolting the ACC for the Big Dozen. Sometimes things just happen.

7) On flip side of Boeheim’s meltdown was UNLV’s Dave Rice reacting like an adult to the Rebels getting hosed by a replay review at Boise State, which cost UNLV a game it had apparently already won.

My only question is this; if Rice was more of a bastard, prone to outbursts, would he have been more likely to get that call? Does yelling/working refs get you an extra call or two a game?

Would Bob Huggins or John Calipari have gotten that call? I’m just asking, and by the way, the basket UNLV scored should’ve counted, seeing as it was called good on the floor and no replay clearly showed it wasn’t good.

6) Its funny that Gene Simmons owns part of an Arena Football team, the LA Kiss; Simmons is highly skilled at making money, but he isn’t a sports fan, something he made clear on his reality TV show. Speaks well of the AFL that he invested in it though. His QB is likely to be Colt Brennan, who played college ball at Hawai’i.

5) In case you’re wondering, in an average NBA game, each team has the ball 96 or 97 times a game.

4) Syracuse 57, Maryland 55-- Terps outscored Orange 19-3 on foul line, but turned ball over 18 times (-7), wasting too many possessions to pull a big upset. Syracuse is very shaky right now; they play Virginia next.

3) Texas Rangers extended Ron Washington's contract thru the 2015 season, so he will not enter this year as a lame duck manager.

2) Sounds like the 49ers have a problem, in that Jim Harbaugh doesn’t get along well with the team’s other decision makers, to the point where he or some of the others may have to go.

Pat Riley wrote a book about how teams are constructed then either thrive or fall apart; this part he called “The Disease of Me” where people think they are the reason the team is winning, rather than the collective effort being the reason. Curious to see how this plays out, but how do the 49ers let Harbaugh walk?

1) RIP Harold Ramis. One of the great comedic minds of our time, Ramis was Bill Murray’s sidekick in Stripes, was a regular on Second City TV and was behind scenes in movies like Animal House, Ghostbusters, Groundhog Day, just a brilliant, funny mind. 69 is too young to go. Rest in peace, sir.
