Preview: Bearcats (11-4) at Mustangs (13-0)
Date: January 07, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

Having already overcome its share of adversity, SMU is having to deal with more after the player at the center of its NCAA infractions left the program.

Without fourth-leading scorer Keith Frazier, the 15th-ranked Mustangs hope to stay focused as they try to continue the best start in school history Thursday night against a Cincinnati team that was the last visitor to win at Moody Coliseum.

SMU rolled to nine straight victories by an average of 24.5 points while coach Larry Brown served an NCAA-imposed suspension for academic fraud and unethical conduct.

In Brown's first home game, the Mustangs remained one of three unbeaten Division I teams despite only using seven players in a 72-58 home win over South Florida on Saturday.

Frazier, the team's second-highest scoring guard at 11.9 per game, did not play after he told Brown he was leaving the team to deal with a personal issue. It has since been reported that the junior guard is stepping away because he's feeling blamed for the infractions that led to the team's postseason ineligibility this season.

The NCAA ruled that a secretary had done Frazier's coursework in the summer of 2013, and Brown was suspended for withholding information and lying when first questioned.

"We're going to support him,' Brown said after Saturday's victory.

Short-handed SMU (13-0, 2-0 American Athletic Conference) looks to regroup offensively as it tries to extend its longest winning streak since a 20-game run in 1955-56. Reigning AAC Player of the Year Nic Moore had 13 points on 3-of-11 shooting Saturday after averaging 20.5 and hitting 11 of 25 from 3-point range in his prior four.

"If you don't guard him, he's going to shoot it," Cincinnati coach Mick Cronin told the team's official website. "And then the second thing is he's a very smart player. If you're out of position, he's going to draw the foul and he's an excellent free throw shooter."

The Mustangs shot a season-low 41.1 percent after they had been leading all AAC teams with a 51.9 field-goal percentage. They also ranked fourth nationally in 3-point percentage at 44.9 before making only 6 of 23 against the Bulls.

Defense has been a key to Cincinnati's success. The Bearcats (11-4, 1-1) are allowing 57 points per game on 35 percent shooting in wins but 75.3 points and a 45.4 mark in losses.

They spent six weeks in the Top 25 before getting knocked out this week despite snapping a two-game losing streak by holding Tulsa to a season-low 33.3 percent shooting - including 4 of 21 from beyond the arc - in Saturday's 76-57 home win.

Farad Cobb led the way with 21 points while hitting 5 of 7 from 3-point range. The senior guard has averaged 15.2 points and made 17 of 31 from 3 in his last five games.

The Bearcats hope to hold their own on the boards as they rank second in the conference with a plus-7.4 rebounding margin. SMU is second nationally at plus-13.7.

Cincinnati is one of only three teams to win in the Mustangs' 45 games at Moody since the start of the 2013-14 season. Cobb and Troy Caupain had 14 points apiece in a 62-54 win at SMU on Feb. 5 after Cobb scored 18 in a 56-50 home victory Jan. 3.

Moore totaled just 19 points on 4-of-19 shooting against the Bearcats, who have won three of four meetings since the AAC debuted in 2013-14.

Preview: Fighting Illini (8-7) at Spartans (14-1)
Date: January 07, 2016 9:00 PM EDT

Tom Izzo praises Denzel Valentine as the most unique player he's ever coached because of an all-around skill set that's enhanced by his leadership qualities.

It's no wonder Michigan State has looked pedestrian through two close calls and been outmatched in a road loss during Valentine's absence.

The fifth-ranked Spartans play their fourth straight game - and possibly their last - without the senior standout Thursday night when they face an Illinois team that has won its last two trips to the Breslin Center.

Michigan State (14-1, 1-1 Big Ten) surged to the No. 1 ranking with the best start in school history behind Valentine's averages of 18.5 points, 8.3 rebounds and 7.1 assists. He hasn't played since a win at Northeastern on Dec. 19, though, and his teammates haven't been as sharp over the last three games following his minor knee surgery.

The Spartans needed overtime to beat Horizon League foe Oakland on Dec. 22, and a week later they trailed by double digits throughout the second half of an 83-70 loss to an Iowa team that has risen to the No. 19 ranking. Michigan State dropped out of the top spot after a school-record, four-week run following a tough 69-61 win at sub-.500 Minnesota on Saturday.

Izzo's team is averaging 14.7 assists without Valentine after previously leading the nation with 22.6 per game.

Bryn Forbes had a career-high 32 points against Oakland and 20 against the Golden Gophers, but he finished with three against the Hawkeyes. Eron Harris has averaged 19.3 points starting in place of Valentine after scoring 7.0 per game through the first 12.

"It's a struggle for us at times right now," Izzo said. "(Not having) our go-to guy to go to on the perimeter especially has been a little bit of a problem. But it's good to be back home."

Michigan State hasn't played in East Lansing since beating Florida on Dec. 12.

Valentine has gone through non-contact drills in practice but hasn't been cleared to play. He hopes to return Sunday at Penn State, and Izzo said the worst-case scenario would be for Valentine to come back against the Hawkeyes on Jan. 14.

Still, the Spartans are held to certain expectations even without their best player. It's a far different feeling than when they were a longshot to reach the Final Four last season but accomplished the feat as a No. 7 seed.

"To hell with being the underdog. I don't mind the pressure anymore, I actually like it," Izzo said. "I actually think it is a compliment and I think our program and our fans and everybody else has to learn to deal with it."

The Fighting Illini (8-7, 0-2) have embraced the underdog role in their last two visits to the Breslin Center, winning 53-46 on March 1, 2014, and 59-54 on Feb. 7. They'll likely have to play much better than they have recently to win there again.

Illinois has dropped back-to-back games following a five-game winning streak, falling 78-68 to Michigan on Dec. 30 and 75-73 at Ohio State on Sunday.

Michael Finke, Jalen Coleman-Lands, Malcolm Hill and Kendrick Nunn scored 14 points apiece Sunday for the Illini, who entered tied for 10th in the country in free throws allowed per game with 14.9. The Buckeyes went 28 of 39 from the line, while Illinois finished 9 of 11.

"That was the difference in the game," coach John Groce said. 'We've got to play a lot harder without fouling."

Michigan State held Illinois to 28.8 percent from the field while winning the most recent meeting 60-53 on Feb. 22 behind 20 points from Valentine.

Hill averaged 18.0 points in last season's two meetings and is at 17.9 this season but has shot 7 for 24 in his last two games.

Arizona travels to UCLA
January 7, 2016

ARIZONA WILDCATS (13-1) at UCLA BRUINS (9-6)

Pauley Pavilion, Los Angeles, CA
Tip-off: Thursday, 9:00 p.m. ET
Sportsbook.ag Line: Arizona -3.5

UCLA is in desperate search of a home win to avoid falling to 0-3 in Pac-12 play as the team hosts No. 7 Arizona at Pauley Pavilion on Thursday night.

UCLA faces a crossroads in their season on Thursday night, as Coach Steve Alford’s team welcomes defending Pac-12 champion, No. 7 Arizona into Pauley Pavilion. Thankfully, the Bruins can refer to big wins already over Kentucky and Gonzaga to buoy their hopes, but getting swept on the Washington road trip (at the Huskies and at Washington State) on Friday and Sunday – both games having UCLA as favorites – was a start that not many saw coming.

Of course, UCLA had the tough task of coming back on one days rest after a draining 96-93 double-overtime loss at Washington, a game they probably should have lost earlier, if not for the heroics of coach Alford’s son, G Bryce Alford (17.3 PPG) hitting game-tying threes at the end of regulation and overtime. The tired Bruins then travelled to Pullman and allowed the Cougars to shoot 55% FG, 45% 3PT, in the 85-78 loss. Both Bruins losses dropped them to 0-5 ATS in their last five and 4-11 ATS overall on the year. UCLA is 6-1 at home this season (3-4 ATS), their lone home defeat coming at the hands of North Carolina, 89-76 (UCLA +8) on Dec. 19th.

Arizona comes off a big road win, turning back upstart in-state foe Arizona State, 94-82 (Arizona -3) in a game now more recognized for Sun Devils’ coach Bobby Hurley’s ejection. Coach Sean Miller, also quite the fiery competitor, has had a team at the head of the class in the Pac-12 since taking over in 2009, amassing an 80-29 record against conference foes and appearing in two straight Elite Eights.

Arizona’s recent betting trend pales in comparison to their home opponent, as the Wildcats are 7-1 ATS over their past eight games. Historically not known for their perimeter marksmanship under Miller, the Arizona faithful have been treated to 48.7% 3PT shooting over their past three games (6th NCAA in that span).

As good as the Wildcats have been, playing in Pauley Pavilion is a daunting task for anyone, and Arizona’s 2-9 SU record at Pauley over the last 11 games reflects just that. The Wildcats are 1-4 ATS at UCLA over the past five games, as well. The total has gone UNDER in four of the last five games between these two teams at UCLA. After missing the entire month of December, Arizona welcomed back C Kaleb Tarczewski (8.5 PPG, 6.8 RPG) to the fold in the win over Arizona State on Sunday. Tarczewski played 15 minutes, contributing 8 points and 5 rebounds.

Coach Miller must be thrilled to have his big man back, as Tarczewski – even though not a stat-sheet stuffer – provides needed size against Pac 12 foes, as the conference boasts many elite big men. Tarczewski will come in handy right away, battling against UCLA’s Tony Parker and Thomas Welsh. The big fella’s absence did allow Miller to develop import Dusan Ristic (8.4 PPG), as the 7-foot sophomore responded with 12.6 PPG on 71% FG in his last five games (all starts).

Allowing 63.3 PPG (22nd NCAA) Arizona has always been about defense-first under Miller (actually up from 59.7 PPG allowed last season). The Wildcats are especially stingy defending the perimeter, allowing only 29.7% 3PT (16th NCAA), which will come in handy when trying to slow down the younger Alford on the Bruins. However, Arizona has allowed 52.8% FG on two-pointers this season, which plays into UCLA’s hands with the aforementioned Parker and Welsh.

Rebounding is the main vehicle for defensive and offensive success for the Wildcats, as they boast a +12.4 rebounding margin (4th NCAA) and allow for minimal second chance looks at the hoop (6.1 offensive RPG allowed, 2nd NCAA). Regardless of roster composition, boxing out is something coach Miller stresses, as Arizona led the nation in this stat (offensive RPG allowed) with 5.7 last season.

F Ryan Anderson (15.1 PPG, 10.2 RPG) has been a revelation for Miller this season, coming over from Boston College. The 6-foot-9 senior has four straight double-doubles. Emerging on offense as one of the most exciting players in the conference has been freshman G Allonzo Trier (14.1 PPG). Trier has now scored 8 straight in double-figures, after starting the season slowly off the bench. The 6-foot-6 guard has two straight 20-point efforts in the Bruins most recent two wins, going 14-16 from the stripe. Also elevating his play as of late has been G Gabe York (13.7 PPG). York had 22 points, 5 rebounds and 6 assists in the win over Arizona State on Sunday.

UCLA’s short rotation came back to haunt them last week after having to play four starters 35+ minutes in the double-overtime loss to Washington. Alford and G Isaac Hamilton (16.1 PPG) played 48 and 43 minutes respectively. Remarkably, Alford finished with 30 points in the loss, after missing his first 11 shots. The minutes didn’t effect Hamilton on offense, who rang up a season-high 27 points in the loss to the Cougars on Sunday evening, but Alford could only struggle to 2-10 FG and 10 points.

More importantly, the Cougars tertiary scoring options on the perimeter had a field day with UCLA’s already-bad defense gone worse. F Tony Parker (13.2 PPG, 9.9 RPG) predictably had a tough time corralling Cougars’ star big man Josh Hawkinson and puffed his way to 7 points, 6 rebounds and four fouls in just 26 minutes. Parker has only averaged 8 points per game over his last three contests.

Picking up the interior slack for Parker has been 7-foot sophomore F Thomas Welsh (13.3 PPG, 8.4 RPG, 59% FG), as Welsh has double-doubles in his last three games and is much more adept at staying out of foul trouble. Freshman G Aaron Holiday (10.4 PPG, 3.2 APG) has earned the elder Alford’s trust, as he’s third on the team with 31 minutes per game, but he’s completely hit or miss with production. Holiday did score a career-high 15 points against the Cougars, taking 15 shots in the process.

Going up against Arizona’s elite defense, UCLA will have to clamp down as well, but that will be a tough task, given that their 76.5 PPG allowed (249th NCAA), is already up from 68.1 PPG allowed last season with the majority of the conference slate still to be played.

**Cincinnati at Southern Methodist**

-- As of late Wednesday night, most betting shops had SMU (13-0 straight up, 4-5 against the spread) installed as a seven-point favorite.

-- Larry Brown’s squad is only one of two unbeaten teams remaining in college basketball (South Carolina is the other). Unfortunately for SMU, it can’t go to the NCAA Tournament this season due to probation sanctions. Nevertheless, the Mustangs can win the AAC regular-season title and they’re out to a 2-0 record in league play.

-- SMU is off a 72-58 non-covering win over South Florida as a 25.5-point home ‘chalk.’ Nic Moore, Markus Kennedy and Sterling Brown shared team-high scoring honors with 13 points apiece. Ben Moore added 12 points and 10 rebounds. Moore dished out four assists and had three steals.

-- Moore, the senior point guard who is a two-time All-AAC selection and last year’s AAC Player of the Year, is the catalyst for the Mustangs. He led the league in 3-point shooting and free-throw shooting last season, in addition to finish fourth in scoring and second in assists. Moore is averaging a team-best 15.9 points per game this year. He has a 59/24 assists-to-turnovers ratio.

-- Jordan Tolbert, a transfer from Texas Tech who was the Red Raiders’ second-leading scorer and rebounder in 2013-14, is averaging a double-double (12.2 PPG, 10.2 RPG). Ben Moore, a junior forward, is scoring at a 12.2 PPG clip. Moore is averaging 8.5 rebounds per game and has a team-best 16 blocked shots. Malik ‘Shake’ Milton, a true freshman guard who was the two-time Gatorade Player of the Year in Oklahoma before inking a scholarship with the Mustangs, is also scoring in double figures (11.6 PPG). Milton has a 37/13 assists-to-turnovers ratio. He is shooting at a incredible percentage from the field for a guard (55.7%) and is draining 47.9 percent of his looks from long distance.

-- SMU is in the process of adjusting from a nine-player rotation (see Keith Frazier info below) to an eight-man rotation that has seven players playing more than 22 minutes per game. The eighth player, true freshman shooting guard Jarrey Foster, is logging better than 16 minutes per contest.

-- SMU has been a single-digit favorite five times, compiling a 3-2 spread record.

-- SMU is undefeated in eight home games, but it has limped to a 1-3 spread record. However, the Mustangs hooked up their backers in their lone single-digit home ‘chalk’ situation (an 82-58 win over Michigan as a 6.5-point favorite).

-- SMU junior guard Keith Frazier left the team this past weekend. He reportedly chose to leave because he felt he was being blamed for the NCAA penalties. Frazier was scoring at a 11.9 PPG clip.

-- Cincinnati (11-4 SU, 4-7 ATS) has won three of four head-to-head meetings against SMU (both SU and ATS) since the AAC’s formation in 2013-2014. The Bearcats are one of just three teams that have won at SMU’s new Moody Coliseum in 45 games since the facility opened in ’13-14.

-- Mick Cronin’s team avoided a three-game losing streak by beating Tulsa 76-57 as an eight-point home favorite. Farad Cobb knocked down 5-of-7 from 3-point land en route to scoring a team-high 21 points.

-- Cobb averages team-highs in scoring (12.3 PPG) and steals (1.1 SPG). Gary Clark, a sophomore forward, has become the heir apparent to shot-blocker extraordinaire Justin Jackson, who departed two seasons ago after spending multiple seasons protecting the rim and turning Cincy games into (almost) automatic ‘unders.’ Clark leads Cincy in rebounding (8.3 RPG) and field-goal percentage (60.9%). Clark also scores at a 9.6 PPG clip and has 17 blocked shots.

-- Cincy’s Octavius Ellis plays an equally important role in terms of interior defense, something that has been a staple for the Bearcats and a reflection upon their head coach throughout Cronin’s tenure. Ellis has a team-best 21 blocked shots. He averages 9.9 points and 7.4 rebounds per game while shooting at a 60.5 percent rate from the floor.

-- Cincy junior PG Troy Caupain is the team’s second-leading scorer (11.1 PPG) and has a stellar 72/21 assists-to-turnovers ratio. He is also second on the team in steals with 17.

-- Cincy has been an underdog just once, losing 65-55 at Xavier as a 4.5-point ‘dog. The Bearcats are 2-1 both SU and ATS in three true road assignments, winning and covering easily at Bowling Green (83-50) and at VCU (69-63).

-- The ‘over’ is 6-3 overall for SMU, 2-2 in its home games with a total.

-- The ‘under’ is 7-4 overall this year for the Bearcats, who have watched the ‘under’ cash at a 28-10 clip in their last 38 road assignments. The ‘under’ has cashed in all three of UC’s three road outings.

-- Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Eastern on the CBS College Network.

**Michigan at Purdue**

-- As of early this morning, most spots had Purdue (13-2 SU, 8-3 ATS) listed as a 7.5-point favorite.

-- Purdue is No. 32 in the RPI Rankings, going 4-2 against the Top 100. The Boilermakers own scalps vs. Florida, vs. Vanderbilt, at Pitt and at Wisconsin. They have lost 70-63 at Iowa and 74-68 vs. Butler in Indianapolis.

-- Purdue won its first 11 games, only to drop two of its last four, including the home setback against the Hawkeyes this past Saturday. The Boilermakers raced out to a 37-20 halftime lead over Iowa, only to get smashed in the final 20 minutes by Fran McCaffrey’s squad. No starters were in double figures for Purdue, which was led in scoring by Kendall Stephens’ 12 points in just 13 minutes of playing time. A.J. Hammons contributed 11 points and seven boards.

-- Hammons, the seven-foot senior center, is averaging team-highs in scoring (13.9 PPG), field-goal percentage (63.0) and blocked shots (2.7 BPG).

-- Purdue leads the nation’s in field-goal percentage defense, forcing foes into shooting at a miserable 34.8 percent clip from the field. The Boilermakers are sixth in scoring defense (59.1 PPG) and 12th in defending the 3-point line (28.3%).

-- Michigan (12-3 SU, 9-4 ATS) is led by senior guard Caris LeVert, who averages team-highs in scoring (17.6 PPG), assists (5.2 APG) and rebounds (5.4 RPG).

-- Michigan is efficient on offense, ranking No. 5 in the nation in field-goal percentage (50.9%) and No. 7 in splashing the nets from downtown (42.8%). The Wolverines are ranked 12th in the country in scoring defense, giving up just 60.9 PPG.

-- Matt Painter’s team has won outright in nine of 10 home games, posting a 4-2 spread record. The Boilermakers have been single-digit favorites six times (home/away/neutral), going 4-2 versus the number.

-- Michigan has won six in a row by double-digit margins, hooking up its backers at a 5-1 ATS clip since losing 82-58 at SMU on Dec. 8. The Wolverines have won their first two Big Ten games, including Saturday’s 79-56 win over Penn St. as 11-point home favorites. Without LeVert, UM was led by Derrick Walton Jr. and Mark Donnal’s 16 points apiece. Walton dished out seven assists, while Donnal pulled down eight rebounds. Muhammad-Ali-Abdur-Rahkman and Aubrey Dawkins finished with 14 and 13 points, respectively.

-- LeVert is dealing with a leg injury that kept him out at PSU. As of early this morning, he was considered ‘questionable’ for Thursday night’s showdown in West Lafayette.

-- Michigan is 2-1 both SU and ATS in three true road assignments.

-- Michigan is winless in a pair of games as an underdog this season, losing at SMU (as previously noted) and falling 74-60 to UConn as a 4.5-point ‘dog on a neutral floor.

-- There’s no shame in Michigan’s three defeats: at SMU, vs. UConn and vs. Xavier. The Wolverines’ best wins are at Illinois, at N.C. St. and a neutral-site triumph over Texas.

-- The ‘over’ is 9-4 overall for Michigan, 2-1 in its three road games. The Wolverines have watched the ‘over’ hit in five consecutive games.

-- The ‘under’ is 8-3 overall for the Boilermakers, 4-2 in their home outings. They have seen the ‘under’ emerge in five consecutive contests.

-- ESPNU will have the broadcast at 7:00 p.m. Eastern.

**B.E.’s Bonus Nuggets**

-- Anthony Drmic went scoreless and Boise St. played a sloppy first half Tuesday night. No problem. The Broncos won by 15 as two-point road favorites at Utah State anyway. Leon Rice can coach. James Webb III is really good. BSU has won eight in a row.

-- Indiana sophomore guard James Blackmon Jr. is out for the season due to knee surgery. He was IU’s second-leading scorer, averaging 15.8 PPG.

-- Looking for an under-the-radar squad? Well, there’s a bunch of them but let’s talk about Chattanooga for a minute. Former Billy Donovan UF assistant Matt McCall is doing a sensational job with Mocs, who have an RPI of 40 behind an 11-2 SU record. They have eight consecutive games after beating Mercer 74-62 as 5.5-point home ‘chalk’ Tuesday night. Chattanooga owns wins at Georgia, at Dayton and vs. Illinois on a neutral court.

-- Arizona State owns a 4-2 record both SU and ATS in six underdog spots. The Sun Devils are six-point ‘dogs tonight at USC.

-- Tennessee absolutely destroyed Florida in Knoxville last night. The Gators, who are 1-1 in SEC play, won’t have it any easier at home Saturday when they take on Ben Simmons, Keith Hornsby and the LSU Tigers.

-- Saint Mary’s has the nation’s best and only unblemished ATS record at 11-0. The Gaels are in action tonight at Loyola-Marymount as 9.5-point road favorites.

-- Worst ATS records: UCLA (4-11), St. John’s (4-11), Minnesota (3-10), Rider (2-8) and Davidson (3-9).

Thursday's Pac-12 Tips
January 6, 2016

A pair of Arizona teams from the Pac-12 will go on the road this Thursday night to face two Southern California foes in a men’s college hoops double-header. First, the No. 7 Arizona Wildcats will square-off against the UCLA Bruins in a 9 p.m. (ET) tip at Pauley Pavilion. The second Pac-12 matchup sends the Arizona State Sun Devils on the road against the USC Trojans with that game getting underway at 10:30 p.m. in Galen Center.

No. 7 Arizona Wildcats at UCLA Bruins (9 p.m. ESPN2)

Betting Point-spread: Arizona -3

Betting Matchup

The lone setback in Arizona’s 13-1 straight-up start was a 69-65 loss to Providence on Nov. 27 as a six-point neutral-site favorite. Since then, the Wildcats have been on a tear both on the court and at the betting window with an 8-0 record SU while covering against the spread in seven of those games. The total has gone OVER in five of their last six contests.

In this past Sunday’s 94-82 victory against rival Arizona State as a 3 ½-point road favorite in its Pac-12 opener, Arizona raised its scoring average to 87.7 points over its last six games. The trio of Ryan Anderson, Allonzo Trier and Gabe York has done most of the damage with a combined average of 43 points a game. Anderson has been the team’s top shooter; hitting 54.1 percent of his shots from the field.

UCLA has been a tough team to figure out all season long at 9-6 SU and it is in an early hole in the Pac-12 following losses to both Washington and Washington State as a slight road favorite. The Bruins have now failed to cover in their last five games with the total going OVER in four of those contests. Overall, they are just 4-11 ATS this year.

The bright spot in what has been a disappointing season so far has been the play of junior guard’s Bryce Alford and Isaac Hamilton. This dynamic backcourt is averaging 33 points, nine rebounds and eight assists. The Bruins are still one of the better scoring teams in the nation with 79.9 PPG, but they fall well down the list on defense when it comes to points allowed (76.5).

Betting Trends

The Wildcats are 6-1 ATS in their last seven road games and they are 23-8 ATS in their last 31 Pac-12 games. The total has stayed UNDER in seven of their last 10 games against a team with a SU winning record.

The Bruins have failed to cover in their last four games at home and they are 1-4 ATS in their last five games following a SU loss. The total has stayed UNDER in five of their last seven games played on Thursday.

The underdog in this matchup is 8-1 ATS in the last nine meetings and the total has stayed UNDER in four of the last five meetings at UCLA.

Arizona State Sun Devils at USC Trojans (10:30 p.m. Pac-12 Network)

Betting Point-spread: USC -6

Betting Matchup

Sunday’s loss to Arizona snapped a SU four-game winning streak as part of an overall record of 10-4. The Sun Devils are just 2-3 ATS in their last five outings with a closing betting line and the total has gone OVER in their last three games. Arizona State is 2-1 ATS in its last three road games and 4-2 ATS this season as an underdog.

Sophomore guard Tra Holder is averaging a team-high 15.2 points this season, but he has been able to exceed that average in each of his last five games including a game-high 24 points in the loss to the Wildcats. The Sun Devils, as a whole, are averaging 76 PPG while shooting 43.2 percent from the field and 31.8 percent from three-point range.

USC is off to a respectable 12-3 start SU with a 10-5 record ATS, but it will be looking to quickly bounce-back from a tough 87-85 loss to Washington its last time out as one-point road favorites after leading that game by as many as 22 points. The total went OVER the closing 163 ½-point line in that game and it has now gone OVER in four of its last five contests. The Trojans remain a solid bet at home with a 7-2 ATS record this season.

Junior guard Julian Jacobs left the game against the Huskies with an ankle injury and his status for Thursday could be considered day-to-day. He is one of six USC players scoring at least 10 points a game in a very deep lineup. The Trojans are averaging 83.7 PPG and this total has climbed to 89.2 points over their last five games. They have also been a strong team under the boards with 43.1 rebounds a game.

Betting Trends

The Sun Devils have failed to cover ATS in seven of their last eight conference games, but they are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 games following a SU loss. The total has stayed UNDER in five of their last six games played on Thursday.

The Trojans are 9-1-1 ATS in their last 11 home games and they are 5-2 ATS in their last seven games following a SU loss. The total has stayed UNDER in five of their last seven home games.

Head-to-head in this conference tilt, the road team has covered ATS in the last four meetings and the total has stayed UNDER in all four games. Arizona State has a 5-2 edge ATS in the last seven games.

Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

College basketball referees work a lot from November-March; here is what referee John Higgins has been doing for the last 7-10 days.........

Dec 29-- Texas Southern @ Baylor

Dec 30-- Nevada @ New Mexico

Dec 31-- BYU @ St Mary's

Jan 1-- Utah @ Stanford

Jan 2-- Michigan State @ Minnesota

Jan 3-- Arizona @ Arizona State-- Higgins tossed Bobby Hurley at end.

Jan 4-- Oklahoma @ Kansas-- Game went triple overtime.

Jan 5-- Kansas State @ Texas

Jan 6-- Evansville @ Wichita State

**********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Ranking the NFL's playoff teams.......

12) Green Bay-- Rodgers was sacked 14 times in his last two games.

11) Washington-- Won last four games, three of which were on road.

10) Houston-- 7-2 in their last nine games after a 2-5 start.

9) Minnesota-- Going to be sub-zero for their game on Sunday.

8) Cincinnati-- Their last playoff win was in 1990: I had hair then!!!!

7) Steelers-- I beat this to death every time an NFL team fires a coach too soon; the Steelers have had three head coaches...........since 1969

6) Seahawks-- Ted Cruz was born in Calgary; if he shows up at a campaign event wearing a Calgary Flames jersey I promise to vote for him. Have some fun with it.

5) Chiefs-- They haven't lost since the Royals won the World Series; they haven't won a playoff game since 1993.

4) Denver-- Don't have lot of confidence in their chances, even at home.

3) New England-- Who are the three people who didn't vote for Junior Griffey for the Hall of Fame? They need to be identified.

2) Arizona-- Now is the hour for Carson Palmer and the Redbirds. Why did Mike Piazza have to wait four years to get into the Hall of Fame?

1) Carolina-- Think about Lovie Smith getting fired last night; in Ron Rivera's first two years with the Panthers, they went 13-19, but they kept him and they're 34-13-1 in three years since then. Firing a guy after two years makes very little sense.

LOS ANGELES (AP) Bryce Alford scored 25 points, hitting a go-ahead 3-pointer with 1.8 seconds left that gave UCLA an 87-84 victory over No. 7 Arizona on Thursday night for the Bruins' first Pac-12 win after opening conference play with consecutive road losses.

Aaron Holiday added 15 points, Isaac Hamilton had 14 points and Tony Parker had 14 points and 12 rebounds for the Bruins (10-6, 1-2). They lost to the Washington schools last weekend.

Alford hit five 3-pointers and Hamilton added three of UCLA's 11 - a season-high against the Wildcats.

Ryan Anderson had 15 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Wildcats (13-2, 1-1), who had their eight-game winning streak snapped. Allonzo Trier added 13 points, and Kaleb Tarczewski had 12 points and 12 rebounds in his second game back from a foot injury.

NO. 5 MICHIGAN STATE 79, ILLINOIS 54

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Bryn Forbes scored 17 points to help Michigan State rout Illinois.

The Spartans (15-1, 2-1 Big Ten) were without Denzel Valentine for a fourth straight game. Valentine participated in pregame warmups and might play at Penn State on Sunday, nearly three weeks after having surgery on his left knee.

Eron Harris added 13 points for the Spartans.

The Illini (8-8, 0-3) didn't have leading-scorer Kendrick Nunn, who the team said stayed in Illinois for the birth of his child. Maverick Morgan had 15 points for Illinois.

The Illini made barely more than one-fourth of their shots in the first half and allowed the Spartans to connect on 61 percent of their shots before halftime.

NO. 15 SMU 59, CINCINNATI 57

DALLAS (AP) - Jordan Tolbert tipped in Nic Moore's missed shot for the go-ahead score with 28 seconds left and then had a big block as SMU rallied to remain undefeated.

The short-handed Mustangs (14-0, 3-0 American Athletic Conference), off to the best start in school history, overcame a seven-point deficit in the final 3 1/2 minutes.

Moore finished with 14 points. He had two 3-pointers in the game-ending 11-2 run for SMU, which along with No. 22 South Carolina (14-0) are the only undefeated Division I teams.

But when Moore missed, Tolbert followed up to put the Mustangs ahead and then blocked Troy Caupain's shot at the other end. Ben Moore made a free throw with 8 seconds left before Farad Cobb missed a go-ahead 3-pointer on the last shot for Cincinnati (11-5, 1-2).

Cobb led Cincinnati with 18 points.

NO. 16 LOUISVILLE 77, N.C. STATE 72

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Quentin Snider scored a career-high 21 points to help Louisville beat North Carolina State.

Freshman Ray Spalding had 12 points off the bench for the Cardinals (13-2, 2-0 Atlantic Coast Conference). They shot 51 percent and used a 9-0 run in the second half to build a double-digit lead before having to hang on against a frantic comeback by the Wolfpack.

The Cardinals led by 16 with 3:38 left only to see the Wolfpack (10-5, 0-2) crawl to 75-72 on Anthony ''Cat'' Barber's three-point play with 16.8 seconds left. Barber scored 20 points to lead N.C. State.

NO. 20 PURDUE 87, MICHIGAN 70

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) - A.J. Hammons scored 17 points and had four blocks and Rapheal Davis added 16 points to lead Purdue past Michigan.

The Boilermakers (14-2, 2-1 Big Ten) have won eight of 10 and are 10-1 at home this season.

Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman scored a career-high 25 points on 10-of-16 shooting for Michigan (12-4, 2-1). Derrick Walton Jr. added 12 points.

Mid-Major Update
January 8, 2016

With almost all of the college hoops non-conference action having wrapped before New Year's, there are few remaining opportunities for the mid-majors to make some noise before Selection Sunday. Which, this season at least, could be dominated even more than usual by the "power conference" entries.

For the mid-majors, this is becoming a disturbing trend. After mid-major ranks secured more Big Dance bids than usual a few years ago, the pattern has once again shifted back to the big boys of college hoops. Last March, on Selection Sunday, once again it was a slant again back toward the power conferences, whose reps dominated the at-large contingent. While last year was not a particularly strong one for the mid-majors, this season might even be worse, to the point where we wonder if some traditional multi-bid mid-major leagues could be one-bid leagues in March. And if there are situations where the mid-majors have to hope for the benefit of the doubt on Selection Sunday, perhaps they should not hold their breath. Last year, one of the flagship mid-major leagues, the Atlantic 10, which looked to have five potential Big Dance invitees, instead got only three, with one of those (Dayton) forced into an at-large play-in game, albeit on its own court, vs. Boise State.

Thus, as we move into college hoops midseason, it's time to take a look at the plight of this season's mid-majors, and rate the chances of their possible postseason participants for this term. Unfortunately, at the moment, it looks like a lot of NIT, CIT, and CBI for the mid-majors...and not much Big Dance. Straight-up records are thru January 6.

AMERICAN... With some justification, perhaps, the American chafes at the mid-major designation. After all, in the league's first year of existence, one of its reps (UConn) won the national title in 2014! But, since the mid-majors need some help this season, we will include the AAC in this review.

Unfortunately for the American, what might be its top national contender this season, SMU (13-0), is on probation and barred from postseason play. The two remaining most-likely Big Dance qualifiers from the American are Cincinnati and UConn (both 11-4). Each has played high-level non-conference slates. In Cincy's case, it lost most of those non-league feature games (vs. Butler, Xavier, and Iowa State), but was in each of those clashes until the final minutes. Wins for Mick "The Ghost" Cronin over George Washington and Big Ten Nebraska will also help. Meanwhile, Kevin Ollie's Huskies probably have a slightly better Big Dance profile with wins over Michigan, Ohio State, and Texas, though setbacks such as last Tuesday vs. Temple do not help the cause. Still, we project both Cincy and UConn steering safely clear of possible "bubble trouble" entering Selection Sunday.

The American entry we're starting to watch is Kelvin Sampson's much-upgraded Houston (13-2), with an almost entirely-new transfer-laden backcourt featuring ex-Purdue Ronnie Johnson, ex-Oregon Damyean Dotson, and juco Rob Gray, all coming in handy with G L.J. Rose still recovering from last January's broken foot. The December win over LSU is looking good, but otherwise there was not much heft in the Cougars' non-conference slate, and losses at Rhode Island and against Dan Majerle's under-the-radar Grand Canyon in a December Las Vegas tourney are not going to help. We are also going to keep an eye on Josh Pastner's Memphis (10-4), which has some "good losses" vs. Oklahoma, South Carolina, and Ole Miss, but no marquee wins. A home loss vs. surprising Sun Belt contender UT-Arlington is another potential negative.

Elsewhere, Tulsa (9-6), Temple (7-6), and UCF (8-5) are probably bound for some postseason tourney, just not the Big Dance (unless one of those pulls a shocker in the conference tourney at Orlando March 10-13).

ATLANTIC 10...Often the flagship league of the mid-major ranks, the A-10 appears to have several intriguing entries this term, though at the moment we only view Dayton (12-2) as a can't-miss NCAA Tourney invitee. The Flyers are probably not going to have to sweat out Selection Sunday as they did a year ago, especially after quality non-conference wins vs. Alabama, Iowa, Vanderbilt, and Arkansas. There's enough heft in that collection of victims to offset a potentially-damaging non-league loss to Chattanooga (though the Mocs look to be the clear favorite in the SoCon), and no shame in the other loss to Xavier in the finals of the Disney World Thanksgiving tourney.

Elsewhere there are a lot of "ifs" in the A-10. George Washington (12-3) has looked like a potential at-large team for much of the season, and recorded one of the best wins by any mid-major when dumping highly-ranked Virginia in November at the Smith Center. The win over Seton Hall also looks good. On the other hand, some damaging losses are beginning to accumulate, with a Dec. 22 setback at a DePaul side that is at the bottom of the Big East, then Wednesday's inexplicable loss to a very down Saint Louis Billikens team. Bad losses often hurt A-10 entries in the eyes of the Selection Committee, and the Colonials are collecting a few too many. Should we begin to keep an eye on St. Bonaventure (10-3)? The Bonnies have one of the best guard tandems in the region in Jaylen Adams and Marcus Posley, but Bona's best non-conference wins were against Buffalo and Ohio, and Mark Schmidt's team missed a chance to record a statement win outside the A-10 when losing to Syracuse.

Virginia Commonwealth (10-5) has dipped in the aftermath of HC Shaka Smart's departure, though the Rams still play a brand of their patented "havoc" with Shaka disciple Will Wade (most recently at Chattanooga) now at the helm. The Rams missed plenty of opportunities vs. high-profile non-league entries (Duke, Wisconsin, Florida State, Georgia Tech, & Cincinnati), so they must recover ground. VCU's midweek win at Saint Joseph's (11-3) might be a good start, but that result was not a good one for the Hawks, who were beginning to generate real momentum for HC Phil Martelli. Losses in potential statement games vs. Florida and Villanova have probably left Martelli with a big hill to climb in the eyes of the Selection Committee.

Elsewhere, the likes of Rhode Island (10-5), Davidson (9-4), plus much-improved Fordham (10-3) and Duquesne (10-5) teams look like postseason-quality entries, but they all are likely on the furthest fringes of the Big Dance "bubble" and likely headed to other postseason events.

COLONIAL...The CAA has been a multi-bid league in recent memory, receiving as many as three invitations a few years ago, but that was before VCU, George Mason, and Old Dominion all flew the coop and went elsewhere.

Nonetheless, the Colonial is pretty deep this season with several compelling entries including Hofstra, James Madison, Northeastern, Charleston, NC-Wilmington, William & Mary & Towson. All are likely bound for the postseason, but almost assuredly just one of those gets into the Dance.

CONFERENCE USA...C-USA had turned into a one-bid league for most of the last seasons when Memphis was dominating the conference before the Tigers moved, with several other C-USA teams, to the American. There is a slight chance C-USA is multi-bid league this season, but a better chance it is not.

Of those who might have an at-large case, we would perhaps look at UAB (11-3), last year's conference tourney winner, with most of its lineup back from the team that advanced to the Round of 32 last March for HC Jerrod Haase. Though close losses to Auburn, Illinois, and Virginia Tech do not give the Blazers much room for error in league play. La Tech (12-2) is cruising quite nicely after the departure of HC Michael White to Florida, as the Bulldogs are winning for new HC Eric Konkol, a recent Jim Larranaga aide at George Mason and Miami. Tech has a good win at Ohio State, but also heavy losses vs. Memphis and Ole Miss in non-league play. The Blazers and Bulldogs, plus Middle Tennessee (8-5), UTEP (10-5) and Old Dominion (8-6) all likely end up somewhere in the postseason, but the only safe ticket for a C-USA rep to the Big Dance goes to the winner of the conference tourney, this year at Birmingham March 8-12.

HORIZON...The Horizon could possibly become a multi-bid league if loop favorite Valparaiso (11-3) loses in the conference tourney. Wins over Rhode Island, Oregon State, Belmont, and Indiana State are not bad for Bryce Drew's Crusaders, with much the same look as last season when they went 28-6 and qualified for the Dance with the Horizon's automatic bid. Valpo was likely an at-large team if it needed to go that route a year ago, and if it rolls again in league play that could once more be the case. Elsewhere, explosive G Kahlil Felder and exciting Oakland (9-6), plus perhaps Milwaukee (10-5), Green Bay (9-5), and perhaps Detroit (8-5) are probably headed for one of the lesser postseason events.

METRO-ATLANTIC...Lots of talk about Monmouth (10-4) having a Big Dance at-large case after King Rice's Hawks beat UCLA, Notre Dame, USC, and Georgetown in pre-league play. But there have also been bad losses to Canisius and most recently at Army, usually not the sorts of results that help with the Selection Committee. Iona (7-6) was more highly-regarded than Monmouth entering the season, but injuries to key cogs Gs A.J. English and Schadrac Casimir have slowed the Gaels. Dancin' Jimmy Patsos' Siena (9-6) is the only other MAAC rep above .500 into early January.

MISSOURI VALLEY...Plenty of moving parts in the Valley, where the early news involved the problems encountered by heavy league favorite Wichita State (9-5), which had myriad injury issues in the first half of the season. But now that G Fred VanVleet and Cleveland State transfer F Anton Grady have returned to active duty, the Shockers have started to roll, and sit 3-0 in Valley play entering the weekend. Though Wichita does not have a non-league victory better than a close home win over UNLV, if Gregg Marshall's team runs away with the league crown, it could have moved itself to the safe side of the Big Dance cut line before Arch Madness commences in St. Louis in early March.

We're keeping a close watch on Southern Illinois (14-2), as the Salukis have broken fast for HC Barry Hinson. But there are no quality non-conference wins on the SIU slate, which was very watered-down. We need more convincing about the Salukis. Northern Iowa (9-6) probably has a better Big Dance profile than SIU because of its big wins over top ten North Carolina and Iowa State. But the Panthers have also piled up several losses and are going to want to stay on Wichita's heels to gain the notice of the Committee. Like SIU, last year's CIT winner Evansville (13-3) also has taken advantage of a lesser non-league slate, and has no win better than Belmont in non-league play. By the start of March, we suspect Wichita will be the only Valley rep with a possible at-large case.

MOUNTAIN WEST...Much like Wichita State in the Missouri Valley, San Diego State (10-6) was a heavy favorite in Mountain West preseason polls, but stumbled several times in pre-league play, with its best win against Cal in Las Vegas. A couple of bad losses to San Diego and Grand Canyon have put the Aztecs in quite hole with the Selection Committee, and SDSU (which has started quickly in league play) probably needs a 15-3 or better Mountain mark to get the Committee to take an at-large look. A better at-large case from the MW might belong to Boise State (11-4), which has three of its losses vs. highly-ranked Michigan State and Arizona (twice), and owns a quality non-league win over Oregon. The Broncos have also started quickly in league play and could get into the mid 20s in wins for HC Leon Rice, who has qualified for a play-in game twice in the past three years.

Elsewhere, the Mountain appears to have no other possible Big Dance at-large candidates, though most of the rest of the league (save San Jose State) will likely have a chance at an invitation from one of the other postseason events.

SOUTHERN...With wins over Georgia, Illinois, and Dayton, Chattanooga (13-2), under first-year HC Matt McCall (former Billy Donovan aide at Florida), has a pretty good at-large profile and could end up making the SoCon a multi-bid league. This year in the SoCon, there are other CBI and CIT-caliber entries from among East Tennessee State, Mercer, and Samford.

SUN BELT...We believe there is a definite chance the Belt becomes a multi-bid league this March thanks to UA-Little Rock (12-1) and UT-Arlington (11-2). The Trojans have a couple of good road wins at San Diego State and Tulsa, while road wins at Ohio State and Memphis have gotten the Movin' Mavs some deserved notice. If these two dominate the Belt, as we suspect they will, both at least stay on the bubble into March.

WEST COAST...The long-time dominance of Gonzaga (12-3) is not quite as clear-cut this season, though with wins over Washington, UConn, and Tennessee, the Zags probably did enough in non-WCC play to get the Selection Committee on board once more. We expect Gonzaga to safely qualify for its 18th consecutive Big Dance in March. Meanwhile, Saint Mary's (13-1) has been much better than expected, though the Gaels did not deal with a robust non-league slate and will have to continue to impress to gain Big Dance at-large notice. BYU (10-5), now finally minus graduated high-scorer G Tyler Haws (who seemed to be at Provo for ten years!), is down a notch this season and seems ticketed to the NIT unless it can show very strongly in WCC play, which could at least keep the Cougs on the bubble entering Selection Sunday.

Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

-- SMU 59, Cincinnati 57-- Mustangs stay unbeaten, outscoring Cincy 11-2 over last 3:30.

-- Why are Lakers on national TV last night and tonight? They're awful.

-- Ole Miss 74, Alabama 66-- Rebels opened up their brand-new arena.

-- SF Giants signed OF Denard Span for three years, $31M.

-- UCLA 87, Arizona 84-- Bruins blew 13-point lead in last 5:00, won it late.

-- Luke Walton was named after Maurice Lucas, Bill Walton's teammate with the great Trailblazer teams in Portland.

**********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud......

13) One college basketball rule that should be changed to increase scoring: when a TV timeout is due and a foul is committed, the TV commercials happen before the foul shots are taken, which makes them harder to make, especially late in a close game. No way to prove this, but I'm telling you more foul shots would be made if the foul shots were taken before the TV commercials, the way they used to be.

12) Your Powerball jackpot is $675M. Good luck to everyone. What would you do if you won that much money?

11) Supposedly the Buccaneers fired Lovie Smith because they do not want to lose OC Dirk Koetter, who worked very well with rookie QB Jameis Winston this year. Smith had six OC's in his 11 years as a head coach; word is Bucs' front office did not have faith in him to find another reliable OC to work with their franchise QB. That is an indication that Koetter could be the Bucs' new HC.

10) Mike Piazza is the first catcher elected to the Hall of Fame since Gary Carter was elected in 2003.

9) 49ers fired coach Jim Tomsula after only one season, which seems unfair, then you realize the guy gets $14M to go away and you stop feeling sorry for him. He can go be an assistant coach somewhere, or try for a TV job or just buy a really nice couch and lay on it for the rest of his life- he's set for life financially.

8) George Karl's son Coby is an assistant coach with Knicks' D-League team in Westchester. He played ball at Boise State, is working his way up the coaching ladder.

7) Six of the ten basketball coaches in the Big X have coached in a Final Four.

6) Not only does Nick Saban make around $7M/year as football coach at Alabama, he is part-owner of a Mercedes dealership in the Tuscaloosa area. So every time one of the rich boosters buys a fancy new car, he's lining coach Saban's pockets even more.

5) Sign of the Times: A daytime show on ESPN this week was discussing betting props for the Clemson-Alabama game Monday night. Interesting stuff; I'm sure the casinos are treating this game like a mini version of the Super Bowl.

4) In his great pitching career, one that will end up in the Hall of Fame eventually, Trevor Hoffman threw to 41 different catchers, first of which was Kevin Higgins, who is now an assistant coach at UNLV. Higgins played in 71 big league games, 26 as a catcher-- pretty good claim to fame, the first catcher for a future Hall of Famer.

3) Rockets are 11-4 if James Harden scores 30+ points, 7-15 when he does not.

2) 1.1 million people entered Germany just last year, looking for asylum from other countries; what the hell do you do with 1.1 million extra people?

1) Every HS/college basketball player should've watched D-League showcase on NBA.TV this week-- there are 19 teams in the D-League, thats roughly 190 guys that are really good basketball players who can't make an NBA roster. Should make guys who are marginal prospects think twice about leaving school early-- it iis really, really hard to make an NBA roster. Maximize your skillset before you go for the money.
