Kentucky, Louisville resume rivalry

December 26, 2014

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - Top-ranked Kentucky has been so dominant that discussion has shifted toward whether the Wildcats are now capable of going unbeaten.

Kentucky's players acknowledge the lofty talk even as they try to tune it out, especially since they still have to clear fourth-ranked Louisville (11-0) in Saturday's annual battle for Bluegrass State bragging rights.

Beating the Wildcats' deep platoon system will be a tall task for the Cardinals, who have lost six of seven in the series. Kentucky (12-0) has won by an average margin of 29 points this season and beaten three ranked foes by 19.3 points.

The Wildcats expect things to be more challenging and hostile in their first true road game as Louisville aims to end a two-game slide against its archrival.

''It's kind of hard not to hear it,'' Kentucky 7-footer Willie Cauley-Stein said Friday of the chatter. ''It's just whether you take it in or not. I've been in this little game for a long time, it feels like, and the college game is so different. One game you can be really good, one game you can be really bad, and it's just the draw of the day.''

Louisville will come in at full strength for the sold-out game at the KFC Yum! Center.

Junior forward Montrezl Harrell (16.7 points, 10.0 rebounds) returns from a one-game suspension after an ejection last week at Western Kentucky, bolstering a Cardinals frontcourt that will have its hands full against Cauley-Stein and four other Wildcats at least 6-foot-9 - a key reason Kentucky has blocked a nation-best 104 shots.

Louisville also has its share of height with 6-8 Harrell, 6-10 forwards Mangok Mathiang and Chinanu Onuaku and 7-foot freshman Anas Mahmoud. And the Cardinals aren't far behind Kentucky in several defensive categories - they're sixth with 7.2 blocks per game.

That will be crucial against a Kentucky squad that has thrived by wearing down opponents with waves of size and talent.

''We know what they're all about,'' Louisville forward Wayne Blackshear said. ''We just have to rebound, stop them from getting on the glass. That's the main point right there.''

For Harrell, that means keeping his cool in what could be a long day.

''I know I'm going to have to play almost 40 minutes in this game,'' Harrell said after watching Tuesday night's 80-55 victory over Cal State Northridge from the bench in street clothes.

''I'm kind of like the heart and soul of our team. I've got to pick and choose plays the smart way.''

Kentucky, meanwhile, comes in well-rested after last Saturday's 83-44 shellacking of UCLA that ratcheted up expectations. If nothing else, a few days spent at home helped players recharge after a demanding schedule they handled well, especially against ranked teams such as Kansas, Texas and North Carolina.

Kentucky coach John Calipari believes that Louisville's physical style on both ends presents a different challenge for his team and has emphasized the Wildcats' dual needs to take and give punishment.

''It's like any team we play,'' Calipari said. ''Teams are going to come after us. They're going to be physical. Teams don't surrender. They're going to do what they have to do.''

While there figures to be some blue-clad Kentucky fans in the house, they'll likely be drowned out by many more spectators dressed in Cardinals red, yelling their loudest to throw off the Wildcats' rhythm.

''That makes it fun,'' Kentucky guard Andrew Harrison said. ''That makes it worth your while. A lot of the young kids haven't really been in an environment like this or been in a very close game like we're going to be in on Saturday. It's a great test for us, and we want to see where we're at.''

Colorado State off to program's best start

December 26, 2014

FORT COLLINS, Colo. (AP) - The cohesion was instant at Colorado State, even with all the transfers and junior college additions.

That's because of video game sessions in the locker room after practice. And bowling nights. And movie matinees. And watching fighter Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s last bout at the home of guard Gian Clavell, who whipped up his famed Puerto Rican chicken-and-rice dish his mom taught him to make.

The 24th-ranked Rams are a tight-knit group of overlooked vagabonds arriving from the University of Arizona, Navy, North Carolina Central, Northwest Kansas Technical College, Southern Illinois and places in between.

Colorado State possesses an attitude - picked fifth in the Mountain West preseason poll - and a savvy coach in Larry Eustachy who melds the pieces seamlessly together, helping the Rams (12-0) to their best start in school history. They're one of eight remaining unbeaten teams heading into a game at New Mexico State on Saturday, but will be without starting center Tiel Daniels (calf) and key reserve Clavell (shoulder) as they stay behind for treatment.

''The whole team is filled with chips on their shoulders,'' said Stanton Kidd, a forward from Baltimore who transferred in from North Carolina Central. ''Colorado State never gets the respect we deserve. But we don't really care. We just want to win.''

It's easy to see why the Rams didn't receive a whole lot of preseason love: They had a largely unknown group.

Sure, senior sharp-shooter Daniel Bejarano was back, along with senior post player J.J. Avila, who played at Navy before his arrival at Colorado State last season. After that, no one really knew much about the Rams' ensemble.

But they had three players in Daniels (Southern Illinois), John Gillon (Arkansas-Little Rock) and Stanton who practiced all last year even as they sat out under the NCAA transfer rule. So, they had a built-in familiarity.

Clavell, a junior college arrival from Caguas, Puerto Rico, fit right in as well, holding dinner parties for the team off the court as the team cooked on it.

''We don't care who scores the most points or who got the most rebounds,'' Bejarano said. ''We have that feel of a brotherhood, of a family. We just find ways to win.''

Colorado State captured the Great Alaska Shootout title in November and turned heads with a 62-60 win at Colorado on Dec. 10. After a nail-biting 85-84 victory at Denver last week, the Rams appeared in the polls for the first time since February 2013.

It also marked the first time in school history that both the basketball and football programs made a Top 25 appearance in the same season. The football team finished 10-3 and recently replaced Jim McElwain, who left for Florida, with former Georgia offensive coordinator Mike Bobo.

Eustachy knew this team had a chance to be special, because ''it's fun going to practice,'' he said.

The good times don't end there. The players go to movies, bowl and play video games as a team.

''That's just us being us,'' Bejarano said. ''That closeness shows up in the games, too.''

Colorado State marches to the beat of Bejarano, a second-team all-Mountain West player a season ago. He began his career at Arizona, only to transfer to Fort Collins after things didn't work out in Tucson.

The topic remains a sore subject.

''At Arizona, I don't think I got a shot. I was told I couldn't play defense, couldn't play Division I,'' Bejarano said. ''That's a lot of motivation. Coach Eustachy has impacted my life. He's bonded us together.''

Eustachy knows about second chances. He resigned from Iowa State in 2003 after pictures of the coach partying with students surfaced and went into rehabilitation to treat alcoholism.

He resurrected his career at Southern Mississippi then joined Colorado State in 2012, the third and fourth schools he's taken to the NCAA tournament.

Eustachy does his homework, finding players who will help the program, not hinder.

''Just because you make some mistakes in high school doesn't mean you can't correct them,'' said Eustachy, who also has five players on the roster from Colorado and another from Regina, Saskatchewan. ''We've taken transfers for one year and they've worked out well.''

Like Kidd, who started at South Plains College in Texas and then went to North Carolina Central, where he averaged 14.5 points in 2012-13. After a year out, he's making up for lost time, scoring 12.5 points a game this season.

''Everyone's like, `Where did this kid Stanton come from? Where did this kid Tiel Daniels come from? How did this kid Bejarano become such an all-around player?''' Kidd said. ''It's surprising to all of us, but at the same time it's expected. We're built on winning and we're all buying in.''

Wildcats facing some tough practice days

December 26, 2014

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - Arizona overcame its shortcomings through the season's first 12 games thanks to a smothering defense that always seemed to be at its best when things got tight.

But when the Wildcats' defense let them down against UNLV, it left them not only defeated, but surrounded by opposing fans who stormed the court.

The difficulty of getting through the crowd is nothing compared to what they'll go through until their next game is played.

With 11 days off before facing rival Arizona State, there won't be much of a break during the holiday break for the third-ranked Wildcats (12-1).

''There's going to be some really, really hard days in McKale Center for the next 10 to 12 days,'' coach Sean Miller said. ''We're going to find out who wants to play hard, who wants to play defense and who doesn't.''

Defense has been the cornerstone of Miller's teams since he arrived in the desert, helping the Wildcats reach the Sweet 16 twice in the past three seasons.

They leaned heavily on their defense over the season's first two months, helping them pull out victories when the offense wasn't in sync and the free throws weren't falling. Some of the wins were impressive, too, including Kansas State and San Diego State in the Maui Invitational, and Gonzaga in a top-10 matchup at McKale Center.

Arizona went into Tuesday's game a 12 1/2-point favorite over UNLV, a young, athletic team that had played inconsistently though its first 10 games.

Instead of rolling over, the Rebels attacked the Wildcats, playing more aggressively throughout.

UNLV's length and athleticism gave Arizona all kinds of trouble. A good rebounding team, the Wildcats allowed UNLV to grab 16 more boards, including 14 on the offensive glass that led to 19 second-chance points. As they have all season, they also struggled to make free throws, going 16 for 27 from the line.

The 71-67 loss ended Arizona's 39-game regular-season nonconference winning streak.

''When you take a loss like that, you really make sure you lock in and focus,'' said junior forward Brandon Ashley, who had not lost a nonconference game at Arizona before Tuesday. ''At this point, it really opens up everybody's eyes that we're not unbeatable, one of those teams that's untouchable.''

That's what Miller is hoping.

He said before the season that the Wildcats were not nearly as good as the preseason hype - they're were ranked No. 2 in The Associated Press poll - and could get off to a rocky start as they tried to build some team chemistry.

The rocky start never quite materialized. Despite the losses of Nick Johnson and Aaron Gordon, the Wildcats worked their way through a difficult schedule and appeared to be headed toward a third straight undefeated nonconference season.

Still, there were plenty of concerns for Miller when the Wildcats were winning, and now that they've lost, he has an 11-day window to motivate and mold his deep, talented team for the rest of the season.

Defense will likely be the place Miller starts. Arizona has been good this season, but it is not nearly in the same place as it was last year when it had Johnson and Gordon, two of the nation's best defenders.

The Wildcats also need to find ways to get the ball in good positions down low to 7-foot center Kaleb Tarczewski more consistently and knock down perimeter shots with more regularity to prevent defenses from packing it in.

And, of course, the free throws. The Wildcats are shooting 65 percent from the line and have had several close games that would have been much more comfortable had they made more foul shots.

''When you get that sick feeling, when they storm the court, how it feels when the horn goes off, there's nothing that simulates that,'' Miller said. ''Moving forward, we have an ideal opportunity to get their attention, and we have to figure out what can make us better.''

Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

Six most popular picks in the Westgate Hotel handicapping contest, where some of the best handicappers in America put up $1,500 apiece, pick 5 games a week:

6) Giants -3-- Big Blue just beat three straight losing teams.

5) Redskins, +6-- Washington won first meeting in overtime.

4) Packers, -7.5-- Last time Lions won in Wisconsin? 1991.

3) Steelers, -3.5-- I'll say this: football season goes by too fast.

2) Panthers +4-- Surprised by this: Falcons are 5-0 in divisional games.

1) Chargers +3-- Bad spread was posted before Alex Smith was ruled out.

Season record of six most popular picks each week: 61-37-1

2013 season record of six most popular picks each week: 42-57-4

**********

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday.........

13) Kentucky 58, Louisville 50-- People have to stop saying how this Kentucky team is the best in the last 30+ years; if they played the 1989-90 UNLV team or the Jordan-Worthy-Perkins Carolina team, they'd be playing against great players who were 2-3 years older than them. They're really good, but college basketball isn't nearly as good as it used to be, since no one who is any good stays in college long.

12) Georgetown 91, Indiana 87 OT-- This was way better game to watch; Hoosiers led by 10 at half, made 13-31 from arc but couldn't put the Hoyas away. I'm sure the fine folks at ESPN were thrilled when this game went overtime and pushed the start of the over-hyped Kentucky game onto ESPN News.

11) Former UConn coach Jim Calhoun works for ESPN now and he isn't bad; he talks a lot slower than he did in interviews when he coached. He was lucky to be with former Virginia Tech coach Seth Greenberg, who is very good on TV.

10) Then there is Jay Bilas, who has replaced Dick Vitale as ESPN's #1 guy but isn't worthy of the position; he quotes Robert M Knight too much and rips the refs for a good part of each game. How about just talking about the game?

9) Underdogs covered all five Saturday bowl games, are 11-7 vs the spread in bowl games this year, going 9-9 SU so far. There have been six bowls involving ACC teams and the underdog covered all six of those.

8) Georgia 86, Mercer 77 3OT-- This is same Mercer program that beat Duke in the NCAAs last March but with lot of new players as they move to the SoCon. Would have been a bad loss for the Dawgs, but they dodged a bullet as they head into SEC play, where it is assumed that Kentucky will run the table.

7) Cleveland Browns suspended their best player, WR Josh Gordon for the last game this season; Gordon was great last year but was a knucklehead this year, appearing in only five games after a couple of suspensions. Suspending him this week costs him a year of service, meaning Gordon can't be an unrestricted free agent for another year.

6) Starting QBs for both Boston College/NC State started their college careers at Florida, where the mismanagement of the QB poisition has them changing coaches again this winter. Gators recruit lot of good players, but they haven't been developing them into better players once they get on campus.

5) In the early 60's, Chicago Cubs didn't have a traditional manager; they used a "college of coaches", eight men who alternated duties, but it failed because there wasn't one true leader who made decisions- it caused chaos and backbiting.

Now the New Jersey Devils won't have one head coach for the rest of this season, using three men to divide the coaching duties, but one of them is GM Lou Lamoriello, who I'm assuming would be the "boss" the Cubs lacked when they tried this method.

4) Arizona Coyotes beat Anaheim 2-1 in a shootout, when Shane Doan scored on a shot where he shattered the blade of his stick, totally fooling the goalie. Doan hasn't scored a goal at home this season, but he picked up a point for Arizona there.

3) Arizona announcers were talking about the NHL considering adopting the AHL's overtime format, where teams play a 7:00 OT, with first 3:00 being 4-on-4, then the last 4:00 3-on-3, before going to a shootout. They were saying only 25% of OTs in the AHL are getting to the shootout, which is appealing to the NHL.

2) My father raises an interesting question; Where does all the money go that the NFL collects for fines? Over course of a year, its a decent amount of cash.

1) Penn State 31, Boston College 30 OT-- How on God's green earth does a major college football program not have a competent kicker? Kid on BC made a 20-yard FG and his teammates mobbed him like he cured cancer. Same kid missed an extra point in overtime that decided the outcome.

-- Trailblazers 101, Knicks 79-- GM aand coach of Knicks make a combined $17M; you could take a drunk out of any bar who could do just as well as they are.

-- Arizona State 56, Harvard 46-- Ivy kingpin Crimson is overrated.

-- Texas Southern 58, Kansas State 56-- Tigers are 3-9, but they beat Michigan St., lost by a point at Auburn, won this game, should be a threat in the SWAC.

-- Alabama 56, UCLA 50-- Third straight loss for the Bruins.

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up an NFL Sunday

Texans 23, Jaguars 17-- Houston outgained Jags 358-233, but were -2 in turnovers; two Jax TDs were a defensive score and after a 23-yard drive. Houston finished 9-7 after being 2-14 last year, using four QBs this season; not sure where they go at QB next year. JJ Watt is first player in NFL history with multiple 20-sack seasons.

Colts 27, Titans 10-- Tennessee upset the Chiefs in Arrowhead Opening Day, then won one game the rest of the year, losing their last ten games. Looks like Tennessee is in the #2 slot in the draft-- will they take one of the QBs or trade the pick? Colts had a 378-192 edge in yardage in a game where Titans averaged 1.4 yards/pass attempt.

Ravens 20, Browns 10-- Cleveland led 10-3 in 4th quarter, then Ravens woke up and clinched playoff spot after Chargers lost in Arrowhead. Baltimore had only two TDs on five red zone drives, have led at halftime only twice in their last nine games- -they outscored last four opponents 61-19 in second half.

Bills 17, Patriots 9-- Buffalo has first winning season in 10 years, but Brady didn't play in second half as Bills won for just second time in last 23 series games. Patriots haven't allowed a second half TD in their last six games. Buffalo didn't have any runner gain 100+ yards in a game, first time that happened since 1979.

Jets 37, Dolphins 24-- Next time we see the Jets they'll have new GM, new coach; no iidea if Geno Smith will be back. Dolphins lose three of last four games to end season, but apparently owner Ross didn't want a bidding war with his alma mater Michigan for Jim Harbaugh, so coach Philbin will be back- they faded in December once again.

Vikings 13, Bears 9--Minnesota drops little in draft by winning this meaningless tilt and finishes 7-9; they won four of last five home games. Eight of their last ten games were decided by 4 or less points or in OT. Chicago lost its last five games, scoring 38 points in last three; keep in mind that Trestman was brought in to improve Cutler's level of play. Oy.

Chiefs 17, Chargers 9-- San Diego lost three of its last four games to miss playoffs; they were outscored 26-7 in second half of those three losses. San Diego was -12 in turnovers over its last ten games, after being +7 in first six games. Chiefs finish season 9-7 despite their WRs not catching one TD pass all season. Hard to believe.

Eagles 34, Giants 26-- Philly is 20-13 in Chip Kelly's first two seasons, but who is their QB moving forward? Giants lost four of last five home games, but found a star in WR Beckham. Eagles are first team since '87 Rams to score a TD on a blocked punt three times in same season. Philly is just third team since 1990 to start season 9-3 or better yet miss the playoffs.

Cowboys 44, Redskins 17-- Dallas finishes season 8-0 on road, opens playoffs next week at home against Detroit; Cowboys scored 38+ points in last four games, 31+ in six of last seven. Washington has huge decisions this winter: do they keep RGIII, do they change defensive coaches- they're 32-65 the last six years.

Saints 23, Buccaneers 20-- New Orleans was comatose for three quarters, losing to a Tampa team that needed to lose this game to get the #1 pick in the draft; they woke up in fourth quarter, won their fourth road game in row but stilll missed playoffs. Tampa Bay blatantly didn't try to win in last 2:00, declining to use last two timeouts when they could've gotten ball back down 26-20. Crafty guy, that Lovie Smith.

Packers 30, Lions 20-- Detroit lost its 24th straight game in Wisconsin after tying it after trailing 14-0; Lions head to Dallas next week, Packers get a week off, after they won 4th straight division title. This is good time to point out that having all divisional games in Week 17 is a very good idea; always good rivalry games. There were players in this game who weren't alive the last time the Lions won in Green Bay.

Panthers 34, Falcons 3-- Carolina won first two games, last four games, went 1-8-1 in between, in possibly the strangest season ever by a division champ. Remember they went 2-0 in backup QB Anderson's starts. Panthers scored four TDs in this game: two by the defense, one on a 4-yard drive. Could be a coaching change coming in Atlanta.

Seahawks 20, Rams 6-- Seattle is #1 seed in NFC. I've said enough about the Rams' lack of a quality QB; they were outscored 106-48 in the third quarter this year, after outscoring foes 95-42 in the first quarter. On their first drive of the second half this year, Rams had two FGs, lost two fumbles, punted 12 times. No bueno.

49ers 20, Cardinals 17-- 11-5 Arizona is a 4.5-point underdog at 7-8-1 Carolina in Wild Card playoffs next week. In one of the worst-kept secrets ever, Harbaugh and the 49ers parted ways about 90 seconds after this game ended. Keep in mind that in the eight years before they hired Harbaugh, 49ers were 46-82; change isn't always good.

Broncos 47, Raiders 14-- Denver had a 13-yard edge in field position; teams with an edge of 10+ yards in field position are 89-4 this season. Oakland split its last six games after an 0-10 start, but lost 52-0/31-13/47-14 in games after the wins. if Manning were to retire, would the Broncos dare start 2015 with Brock Osweiler as their QB?

Steelers 27, Bengals 17-- Regular season ends with bad beat for Bengal backers; Big Ben hit Brown on 63-yard TD pass with 2:50 left to put game away. Bengals now go to Indy next week; Steelers host the Ravens. Steelers got away with incredibly stupid fake punt which didn't work- they better hope Bell is healthy this weekend.

Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

Six playoff droughts for NFL teams.........

-- Chiefs-- Lost last eight playoff games; last win was in '93 against the Oilers.

-- Bengals-- Lost last six playoff games; last win was in '89, also vs Houston.

-- In 48-year Super Bowl era, Lions are 1-10 in playoffs, beating Dallas in '91.

-- Bills-- Haven't made the playoffs since '99, when they lost Music City Miracle game to the Titans in Nashville.

-- Cowboys-- 1-7 in playoffs since '97; beat Eagles 34-14 in 2009.

-- Miami was outscored 74-12 in losing three playoff games since its last win, back in 2000 against the Colts.

**********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.......

13) NFL suspended Ndamukomg Suh for the playoff game this week, after he was flagged for stepping on Aaron Rodgers Sunday. Dominic Raiola was suspended for last week's gams; they lost Stephen Tulloch for the season after he blew his ACL out doing a celebratory dance. Weird year for the improved Lions, who have one playoff win in the 48-year Super Bowl era.

12) Want to feel old? Lebron James turns 30 today.

11) Tom Brady re-did his contract (again), giving the Patriots $24M or so in extra cap room this winter. When he retires, Robert Kraft should give him a small ownership stake in the team, thats how much he's meant to this team.

10) Jim Harbaugh is going to be making $1M a year more than Nick Saban; think about that for a second. I'm tired of hearing about Harbaugh; I'm also very happy he's out of the NFC West, because he did nothing but win coaching the 49ers.

9) Its amusing that Florida State is a 9-point underdog Thursday; they're 27-0 with Winston at QB, with last four wins all by 5 or less points.

8) College football fans took to Twitter Monday after to point out a Texas A&M assistant shoving a West Virginia player ont he sidelines; the assistant wasn't on the dielines for the second half of the game. Twitter is turning more fans into the golf fans who calll in obscure rules violations during PGA tournaments.

7) SI.com pointed out Monday that over last 12 years, Patriots have won 61 more games than any other AFC East team- thats five wins a year!!!!

6) Dallas Cowboys are 8-0 on road this year; of the last seven teams to be perfect on the road during the regular season, six of them made it to the Super Bowl.

5) I don't give a rat's ass about MVP races, Cy Young awards or the Heisman Trophy; those are just individual things. Way too much is written about them.

4) Connor Shaw is 22nd starting QB the Cleveland Browns have had since they became a team again in 1999. 22 starting QBs in 16 years? No bueno.

3) Sounds like Cavalier coach David Blatt needs to string some wins together; the rats are starting to jump off the ship a little bit, as Cavaliers struggle since losing their center Anderson Varejao for the season (achilles). Varejeo was a good energy guy, a little Rodman-esque, tough guy to replace.

2) Buffalo QB Kyle Orton retired, a big blow to the Bills, who gave Orton a 2-year contract this summer. Bills had their first winning season in a decade, now they take a step back, since it is evident that EJ Manuel won't be the answer under center.

1) Clemson 40, Oklahoma 6-- This result makes it a tossup between Sooners and North Carolina for the worst bowl performance so far this month. Clemson didn't even have their starting QB for this game. Dismal peformance by Oklahoma.

Bracketology Update

December 29, 2014

We're still early enough in the college hoops season that "St. Joe's" Lunardi's name has yet to surface in the discussion. Once beyond new year's, however, rest assured we will start hearing about Lunardi and "bracketology" on a more-frequent basis as March Madness begins to loom on the horizon.

December is a bit early to make prognostications for the NCAA Tournament, but this time of year can be a barometer regarding where teams stand as we hit the holidays and prepare for the commencement of conference play. Obviously, our many "bracketology" updates will have a different look as we move into 2015, but as a measuring stick for the first month-and-a-half of the season, we believe it to be a worthwhile exercise in late December.

We will continue to provide our own Big Dance forecasts periodically into March. But we will wait until our January updates before including each team's "RPI" (Ratings Percentage index) number, a calculation that begins to become more illuminating as we get deeper into conference action. For now, we just offer our "seeding" as of December 24, along with straight-up records thru Christmas Eve.

Remember, for all of our "Bracketology" updates, the term "protected seed" refers to seeds 1 thru 4 in each region, and generally favorable geographic placement in the sub-regional round.

As usual, we break down the projected matchups by each region, beginning with the sub-regionals, which this season will begin on Thursday, March 19, with the Dayton "First Four" games played on March 17 and 18. Remember, Selection Sunday is less than 12 weeks away!

EAST REGIONAL (Syracuse)

At Charlotte...

1 Duke (SUR 10-0) vs. 16 Army (8-2)...At the moment, the Dookies are a pretty easy call for a regional top seed; and Blue Devil backers are already making plans for the Charlotte sub-regional. There will be several challenges awaiting Coach K's troops in the ACC, but right now Duke appears the best of that lot, especially with the likelihood that monster frosh C Jahlil Okafor will continue to improve as the season progresses. How neat would it be for Coach K to have to go up against alma mater Army, where he was head coach before taking the Blue Devil job in 1979? It's the best West Point team in decades, and looks the team to beat in the Patriot League. Duke has already beaten the Black Knights by a 93-73 count on Nov. 20, an honorable result for HC Zach Spiker's team. Who would Bob Knight be pulling for in this matchup?

8 Penn State (12-1) vs. 9 LSU (9-2)...Some Big Ten observers believe Penn State will fall back to earth once conference play commences, but to this point Patrick Chambers is in the running for league Coach of the Year honors as the Nittany Lions have turned heads, even without graduated G Tim Frazier. Senior G D.J. Newbill (21.4 ppg) could be on his way to Big Ten MVP honors. The most eye-opening Penn State win to date was a dominant 64-51 hammering of a good George Washington team on Dec. 14. As for Johnny Jones' LSU, it served notice as a team to watch with a recent win at West Virginia. Although Jones will want to get electric juco PG Josh Gray (ankle sprain; missed last two games) back in the lineup ASAP. There is room for a team to emerge behind Kentucky in the number two spot in the SEC, and the Tigers appear a good candidate.

At Seattle...

4 Utah (9-2) vs. 13 Wofford (9-3)...Larry Krystowiak's Utah served notice with a recent win over Wichita State that it means business this season. Losses to ranked San Diego State and Kansas should not hurt the Utes' profile all that much, and we foresee a top-three Pac-12 finish for Krystowiak's team. Wofford has picked up where it left off late last season when it swooped to the SoCon Tourney crown and Big Dance bid and looks the team to beat in the loop once more behind sr. G Karl Cochran. The best Terrier win thus far is a 55-54 success vs. 10-3 NC State that suggests Mike Young's team could pose problems for "major" opposition in the Dance.

5 Kansas (9-2) vs. 12 Davidson (9-1)/Wyoming (11-2)...Kansas' lopsided losses to Kentucky and Temple have pushed the Jayhawks out of our protected seed category, at least for the time being. And Bill Self's team is also going to have plenty of tough dates upcoming when Big 12 play commences, so a high seed is no guarantee for Kansas, which also somewhat disappointed a year ago. For one of the play-in games, we currently reward two of the surprise teams in the early going, who do it different ways. Bob McKillop's go-go Davidson has moved from the SoCon to the A-10, but has been scoring close to 90 ppg in pre-league play. We'll see how the Wildcats adapt to moderately-upgraded competition in their new league. Larry Shyatt's Wyo is a surprising 11-2, and doing it, as usual, with defense. The Cowboys have suffered injuries that have derailed each of the last two campaigns, so keeping star F Larry Nance, Jr. healthy will be a key if Wyo is to sustain its Big Dance hopes into Mountain West play.

At Pittsburgh...

2 Villanova (12-0) vs. 15 Coastal Carolina (9-3)...Jay Wright has taken a team to the Final Four before (2009), so when Big East observers say that the current 'Nova edition could be the best in Wright's tenure, it means the Cats are a serious contender and the team to beat in the Big East. Wily old fox Cliff Ellis steered Coastal Carolina to the Dance last March and proceeded to scare the daylights out of top seed Virginia in an honorable loss. The Chants look to be the best bet to emerge from the Big South, with Scott Cherry's High Point and Tim Craft's Gardner-Webb (from Boiling Springs, NC), a recent upset winner over Purdue, appearing to be the top challengers.

7 Colorado State (12-0) vs. 10 George Washington (8-3)...Larry Eustachy has done a quick reload at CSU, with a bevy of transfers having hit the ground running in Fort Collins and emerging as solid contributors alongside holdovers F J.J. Avila and Daniel Bejarano. Mountain West observers like this Rams team as much as Eustachy's bunch that reached the third round of the Dance two years ago. As for GW, it has advanced to the finals of the Diamond Head Classic, where it will meet Wichita State on Christmas Day, with a chance to secure a valuable chip to be cashed on Selection Sunday. Mike Lonergan's Colonials also advanced to the Dance a year ago.

At Jacksonville...

3 Maryland (11-1) vs. 14 Iona (7-4)...Mark Turgeon's Maryland has already served notice that it should be able to handle the jump from the ACC to the Big Ten without too much difficulty. The Terps' recent win at Oklahoma State minus star F Dez Wells (due back from injury in time for Big Ten play to commence) was a warning shot to rest of their new league. Frosh G Melo Trimble looks like one of the breakout starts in the loop. No shame in the Terps' only loss to date (vs. Virginia). The Metro-Atlantic appears to have no clear favorite at this stage, with the overall quality of play in the loop perhaps a tick down after many star players graduated after last season. Tim Cluess' Iona always remains a safe bet to emerge; the Gaels and Canisius are the only MAAC reps sitting above .500 at Christmas.

6 Baylor (10-1) vs. 11 NC State (10-3)...With only one loss (vs. Illinois at a Thanksgiving week tourney in Las Vegas) entering the end of December, Baylor again has a satisfactory pre-league profile to impress the Selection Committee. As mentioned earlier, however, the Big 12 is loaded this term, so the Bears and other loop contenders could easily slip down the seeding scale as we get deeper into league play. Mark Gottfried's NC State has been a mild surprise in the ACC, not missing departed gunner T.J. Warren. Gottfried's all-SEC transfer backcourt of ex-LSU G Ralston Turner and ex-Bama G Trevor Lacey are among the best perimeter tandems in the ACC.

SOUTH REGIONAL (Houston)

At Louisville...

1 Kentucky (12-0) vs. 16 Alabama State (3-5)/Stony Brook (7-6)...No surprise to see Coach Cal's UK at the top of a region. Already there is talk about the Cats going through the season undefeated (though a tough test awaits this Saturday at Louisville). Big Blue backers are already making plans for the Louisville sub-regional. The Cats will likely be facing a winner of one of the 16 vs. 16 play-in games. Almost assuredly, the SWAC winner will be involved; at the moment we project that to be Alabama State, whose 3-5 non-league mark is by far the best in that loop. The America East is often at risk of a 16 vs. 16 play-in, too, and no team has stood out in pre-conference play. A measured December vote for the home team of Strat-o-Matic headquarters on Long Island, Stony Brook.

8 Minnesota (10-2) vs. 9 Seton Hall (9-2)...Richard Pitino's first season in the Twin Cities was a success as the Golden Gophers won the NIT last spring. With much of the same lineup back in tow, it would be no surprise for Pitino and the Gophers to proceed to the next step and qualify for the Dance this term. An early surprise package in the Big East has been Kevin Willard's Seton Hall, which won the Virgin Islands Tourney in November. Though a recent loss at Georgia might indicate that tougher times are ahead in the Big East.

At Jacksonville...

4 Texas (10-2) vs. 13 Murray State (9-4)...Texas drooped a notch after its midweek home OT loss vs. Stanford, but the Longhorns still land in protected seed territory. The Longhorns also look like one of the few teams likely able to stand up to Kentucky, which the Horns did pretty well a few weeks ago in Lexington before losing by 12. Regional observers are mostly taking await-and-see attitude in the Ohio Valley, but the majority of onlookers believe that Murray State is likely to be one of the teams involved in the race for the league's automatic Big Dance bid.

5 North Carolina vs. 12 SMU (8-3)...We were not planning on moving the Tar Heels as high as a 5 seed until last Saturday's win over Ohio State, which signaled that Roy Williams' team might finally be ready to come together. There's too much talent on the roster for UNC to continue to flounder. What a delicious matchup this would be in the sub-regional vs. SMU, with Mustang HC Larry Brown a long-ago Tar Heel alum. The Ponies were probably the highest-profile snub on the last Selection Sunday, and with PF Markus Kennedy having recently regained eligibility, expect SMU to make it into the field of 68 this coming March.

At Seattle...

2 Gonzaga (11-1) vs. 15 FGCU (9-3)...Insiders on the Pacific coast almost all believe that this is Mark Few's best Gonzaga edition and one of the few teams with a possible shot at Kentucky in March. The Zags will threaten for a number one seed in the West if they can march through the WCC. The last vestiges of Andy Enfield's "Dunk City" still remain at FGCU from the Sweet 16 run of two years ago. Now, the Eagles no longer surprise anyone, but they do appear to be the team to beat in the Atlantic Sun.

7 Northern Iowa (10-1) vs. 10 Stanford (7-3)...The Missouri Valley looks to be a multi-bid league again this season thanks to UNI, with all five starters back in the fold for HC Ben Jacobson. The Panthers' only setback has been in double OT at VCU, and a very impressive recent win vs. Iowa has solidified UNI's at-large status heading into January. Speaking of solidifying status, Stanford's rousing midweek upset win at Texas was a huge win for the Cardinal that could pay dividends on Selection Sunday. With some of last season's Pac-12 contenders such as UCLA, Arizona State, and Oregon down from a year ago, there is room for Stanford to emerge as a top-three team in the Pac-12.

At Columbus...

3 Notre Dame (12-1) vs. 14 Northeastern (7-4)...On the way back appears to be Notre Dame, as the Irish are now finding out how important it would have been for G Jerian Grant to stay eligible the entirety of last season. Now back in the fold, Grant is likely to make All-American teams at the end of this campaign. The Colonial has lost some luster in recent years with onetime flagship programs VCU, ODU, and George Mason leaving the league. The best of the rest this season might be Bill Coen's Northeastern.

6 Michigan State (9-4) vs. 11 Green Bay (9-3)...We admit that MSU's body of work to date might not warrant a No. 6 seed, especially after last weekend's shock loss to unheralded Texas Southern. But Tom Izzo's Spartans routinely peak in the second half of the season, and we allow ourselves to project a little in the case of MSU. The Horizon race could easily come down to a two-team dogfight between Brian Wardle's Green Bay and Bryce Drew's Valparaiso. For the moment, a measured vote for the Fighting Phoenix and their highlight-reel, mighty-mite guard, Keifer Sykes.

MIDWEST REGIONAL (Cleveland)

At Columbus...

1 Louisville (11-0) vs. 16 St. Francis, Pa. (6-4)/Norfolk State (9-5)...Unfortunately for the Cardinals, the sub-regional at their home KFC Yum! Center is off limits due to NCAA rules, so Rick Pitino's team will be on the road, perhaps to the next-closest site, Columbus. We're curious to see how the 'Ville reacts to its new surroundings in the ACC, though we're also as interested to see how the new conference foes deal with the Cards. Another of the 16 vs. 16 play-in games could feature the Northeast Conference, where Maurice Stokes' alma mater St. Francis (Pa.) is one of the few teams above .500 in pre-league play. As always, be aware of the home team of the Pittsburgh Airport, Robert Morris, as well as Clair Bee's former Long Island U. Blackbirds. The MEAC is often involved in 16 vs. 16 play-in games, too, and Norfolk State is a familiar Big Dance rep from that league in recent years.

8 Old Dominion (10-1) vs. 9 Miami-Fla. (9-3)...Pre-league play has suggested that Jeff Jones' resurgent ODU could be the team to beat in Conference USA, though some observers still believe La Tech, saddled with a tough early slate, or Tim Floyd's UTEP might eventually emerge. The league was competitive at the top last season, with Tulsa (now in the American) the surprise conference tourney winner. We are very tempted to drop Miami out of the field entirely after recent losses to Eastern Kentucky and Providence. For the moment, early-season work was good enough to keep Jim Larranaga's Canes in the field, but Miami risks banishment to the NIT with more efforts like the last two losses.

At Portland...

4 Washington (11-0) vs. 13 Central Michigan (9-1)...Perhaps the surprise team in the country has been U-Dub, as Lorenzo Romar appears ready to return to the Dance after a three-year hiatus. Fresno State transfer Robert Upshaw has provided a fierce defensive presence in the paint, while G Nigel Goss-Williams has emerged as one of the Pac-12's stars. In the MAC, many are alerting to dramatic improvements from Keno Davis' CMU, with all five starters back from last season and only one loss (at Bradley) entering January.

5 West Virginia (11-1) vs. 12 Georgetown (7-3)...We suppose that West Virginia would have a case (at the moment) for a protected seed. Whatever. It looks as if Bob Huggins is back with a legit national contender, fortified with players who were ineligible last season such as F Jonathan Holton, and with G Juwan Staten the Big 12 scoring champ from a year ago. Admittedly, it got a bit dicey for us with the last teams to put in the field, so this is only a provisional recommendation for Georgetown, with the Hoyas getting the benefit of the doubt (for the moment) due to "good losses" to Wisconsin, Butler, and Kansas. We like the "old" Big East matchup between these sides.

At Omaha...

2 Wisconsin (11-1) vs. 15 South Dakota State (9-4)...Figure on Bo Ryan's Wisconsin being in the hunt for a top regional seed all of the way to Selection Sunday. If the Badgers end up winning the Big Ten, and the conference tourney, there's a good shot they'll be rewarded accordingly. In the sub-regional, Wiscy likely runs into a foe like South Dakota State, which is our early pick to emerge from the Summit under 19th-year HC Scott Nagy, who has been dancing before with the Jackrabbits. Scott Sutton's Oral Roberts, back in the league after a short stint in the Southland, is another Summit team to watch.

7 Butler (9-3) vs. 10 Cincinnati (8-3)...Butler endured a bumpy beginning to the season, as HC Brandon Miller took a medical leave of absence before fall practice, but interim HC Chris Holtmann has had the Bulldogs running, and effectively so. Though recent losses to Tennessee and Indiana have us wondering if we have seeded the Bulldogs too high. Cincinnati is another team with coaching health issues, as Mick Cronin has been sidelined due to aneurysm concerns. Prior to last Saturday's loss to VCU (Cronin's first missed game), the reconfigured Bearcats, minus graduated top scorer G Sean Kilpatrick, looked to be coming around. Watch this situation closely.

At Omaha...

3 Wichita State (10-1) vs. 14 Stephen F. Austin (9-3)...Wichita doesn't have the burden of staying unbeaten for the entire regular season as it did a year ago, as Utah has already dented the Shockers, but Gregg Marshall's team has not lost much, if anything, from a year ago and is still the heavy favorite in the Missouri Valley with vet Gs Ron Baker and Fred VanVleet leading the way. SFA scored one of the shockers of the Dance last March when toppling VCU in the sub-regionals, and HC Brad Underwood is back with three starters from a year ago. Expect Sam Houston to give chase in the league race. Note that another Southland rep, San Antonio-based Incarnate Word, which made news with a recent upset over Nebraska, is still in transition phase to D-I and will be ineligible for the postseason this term.

6 Oklahoma (8-3) vs. 11 Dayton (9-2)...Big 12 insiders believe this is Lon Kruger's best chance to advance beyond the sub-regionals with Oklahoma, which has been a "one and done" in the Big Dance hurdle the past two seasons. Houston transfer F TaShawn Thomas has added a new dimension to the Sooner attack. Dayton will not sneak up on anyone after last year's Elite Eight run, but Archie Miller's Flyers seem poised for another Big Dance bid. Though we do not much like the new "D" logo for the Flyers, much preferring the more-streamlined logo of recent years.

WEST REGIONAL (Los Angeles)

at Portland...

1 Arizona (12-1) vs. 16 New Mexico State (5-8)...Zona was knocked from the ranks of the unbeatens last Wednesday when stunned at UNLV, so we suppose this top seed should be under review. But an earlier win over Gonzaga would give the nod to the Cats over the Zags, at least for the time being. Sean Miller's team would not rather draw a 16 seed like New Mexico State, which is going to look a lot more menacing when star G, skywalker Daniel Mullings, returns from injury. When the Aggies get healthy, they should dominate the WAC.

8 TCU (12-0) vs. 9 Arkansas (9-2)...Maybe TCU deserves a better seed than 8, as the Frogs appear to be the top candidate for surprise team in the country with their rabbit-fast start from the gate. Trent Johnson's collection of transfers have quickly meshed around holdover PG Kyan Anderson to form an irresistible combination in Fort Worth...and make the Big 12 that much tougher. Mike Anderson's Arkansas has lost a couple of times, but would appear to be jockeying with LSU for the honor to be number two in the SEC behind Kentucky.

At Pittsburgh...

4 St. John's (10-1) vs. 13 Harvard (7-2)...St. John's is looking like a special sort of team this season, especially after rallying from 15 down at halftime to beat a good Saint Mary's team last week. Steve Lavin gets back to the Dance, as we rate only Villanova over the Red Storm in the Big East entering conference play. Despite being rudely dumped by Virginia last weekend (the Cavs led 39-8 at the break before coasting to a 76-27 win!), Tommy Amaker's Harvard, with wins in each of the last two Big Dances, still appears the team to beat in the Ivy League. Though Yale and Columbia might have something to say about the race. (Check out our Ivy retrospective, and preview of the current Ivy race, on these pages from two weeks ago).

5 Ohio State (10-2) vs. 12 Alabama (8-3)/Oregon (9-3)...We've got 75% of the football "Final Four" in this 5-12 group which includes one of the at-large play-in games. For the moment, we project Pac-12 Oregon and SEC Alabama to perhaps settle a school-vs.-school score that might have an earlier act in the CF Playoff title game. Stay tuned for those developments. We do think Ohio State will safely make the field of 68, as Thad Matta's collection of shooters should do just fine in the Big Ten. The Buckeyes were in the running for a protected seed prior to their loss last Saturday vs. North Carolina.

At Charlotte...

2 Virginia (11-0) vs. 15 UC Davis (9-1)...Tony Bennett's Virginia was a No. 1 regional seed last season after winning the ACC Tourney, and will be in the frame to do so again. Arguably the best defensive team in the country, we rate the Cavs as a co-favorite with Duke to win the loop, and cannot project anything lower than a 2 seed for the Wahoos. The Big West race could go in a variety of directions; remember that Cal Poly won the conference tourney last year with a losing overall mark. Dan Monson's Long Beach State might be the best team, although the 49ers are again taking their lumps with a brutal non-conference slate. UC Irvine is also a contender, though 7-6 C Mamamdou Ndiaye is currently out with injury. Also impressing early is Kimberly Guilfoyle's alma mater UC Davis, which (like Irvine) is looking for its first-ever Big Dance bid and spearheaded by former Arizona State G Corey Hawkins (20.1 ppg).

7 San Diego State (9-3) vs. 10 Providence (10-3)...While SDSU was in the frame for a protected seed a year ago, we don't project the Aztecs quite as highly this season. A series of unwatchable games has confirmed shooting concerns on Steve Fisher's squad, which still might be the team to beat in the Mountain West. But at the moment, we can't seed SDSU any higher than a 7. Providence, the surprise winner of the Big East Tourney last season, is hinting that it might be ready for back-to-back Dance visits under shrewd HC Ed Cooley. As of yet, the Friars do not miss departed star Bryce Cotton, with F LeDontae Henton taking over go-to scoring duties, and recent wins over UMass and Miami-Fla. have opened more eyes in the region.

At Louisville...

3 Iowa State (9-1) vs. 14 Eastern Washington (9-4)...Fred Hoiberg's ISU has become a Big Dance regular, and even a few graduation losses from last year's Sweet 16 team do not look to have slowed down the Cyclones, whose recent thumping win at state rival Iowa confirmed that ISU is more than ready to hold its own in the tough Big 12. Keep an eye on Jim Hayford's EWU, which appears to be the class of the Big Sky and owns a win at Indiana and a near-miss at Washington. The Eagles own the best 1-2 scoring punch in the Sky with G Tyler Harvey & PF Venky Jois.

6 VCU (9-3) vs. 11 BYU (10-3)...Give Shaka Smart and VCU some credit for tough pre-league scheduling; once the slate eased in the past two weeks, the Rams started to run up scores over decent opposition. We have no doubt "Shaka Ball" fares well again in the A-10 and gets the Rams on the safe side of the cut line well before Selection Sunday. As for BYU, it might not have an easy ride through the WCC, which has few soft spots this season, but enough firepower exists on Dave Rose's roster (especially with G Tyler Haws beyond his recent ankle injury) to avoid the banana peels and make it back to the Dance.

Last four in: Davidson, Wyoming, Oregon, Alabama.

Last four out: Xavier, Illinois, Ole Miss, Cal.

Next four out: UTEP, Iowa, Oklahoma State, Saint Mary's.

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Random thoughts as 2014 winds down

13) Ndamukomg Suh won the appeal of his suspension, can play in the Lions' game in Dallas this week; he's going to get fined $70,000, but if he had been suspended for a playoff game, it likely would've cost him a lot more than that when he hits the free agent market in March.

12) Notre Dame 31, LSU 28-- We need more accountability from replay officials, as in, who are they and are they actually watching replays? LSU tried a fake FG near the end of the first half, the runner was called down short of the goal line. Replays showed the guy scored (my father loves Notre Dame and admitted it should be a TD) but the replay official gagged and let the call stand. Incompetent or corrupt? You decide.

11) Think about the impact these rookies had in the NFL this season: Blue, Landry, Beckham, Hill; all four of those guys played for LSU LAST YEAR. Hard to replenish that much talent every year and remain a top 10 program.

LSU also lost defensive coordinator Chavis to Texas A&M after the game; a big loss, but they'll find a good replacement. SEC teams pay coordinators serious money.

10) In their last six games, Seattle Seahawks outscored their opponents by combined score of 85-13; they're going to be tough to beat at home.

9) ESPN2 shows three Big 14 games Tuesday and chooses to put Dan Dakich as an analyst on the Michigan game; his kid is a benchwarmer for the Wolverines. This is good journalism? I'd be better with it if they acknowledged the fact, but they never mention the kid on telecasts. When Fran Fraschilla did Oklahoma games when his son was on the end of the Sooner bench, they often acknowledged it.

8) Turns out Jim Harbaugh will make the same $5M a year at Michigan that he was making with the 49ers; the other $3M, I'm guessing goes to his staff, which is the new thing in college football, getting better coordinators by overpaying them.

Thats a big part of why Bret Bielema left Wisconsin and why Kyle Whittingham is having issues with his AD at Utah, salaries for their coordinators.

7) Georgia 37, Louisville 14-- Freshman Chubb ran for 266 yards, most ever by a freshman running back in a bowl, breaking Ron Dayne's old record by 20 yards. SEC is 4-1 in bowls this month, 22-8 in their last thirty overall.

6) Whenever I read about NFL job interviews, I'm reminded that Al Davis used to use job interviews as a way to pick people's brains for information. Lot of people that he interviewed he had no intention of hiring, he just wanted to learn from them.

5) Loyola Marymount is a combined 8-28 on 3-pointers in its last four games, ironic when you consider that LMU is the school that gave us Kimble-Fryer-Gathers and one of the highest scoring teams in NCAA history.

4) ESPN's college basketball analysts, a suprisingly weak lot, spend way too much time bashing officials. ESPN has a lot of terrific play-by-play guys, but they've let some of their better analysts walk. Many of those who remain don't talk about the game enough, they crab about length of replay reviews, officials' calls. No bueno.

3) Remember it is easier to ask for forgiveness than permission.

2) There's a new Indian restaurant opening in Las Vegas with a cool name, the Urban Turban. I've never even had Indian food, just think it is an excellent name

1) Serious question: You're an NFL GM, make $1M a year. Keeping your job depends on you picking the right head coach. Would you hire Rex Ryan? I'm not leading you in either direction, its a fair question.
