UCLA, Kentucky announce hoop series

December 8, 2014

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - Kentucky will face UCLA next season in a home-and-home series that will bring the Bruins to Rupp Arena for the first time in 2016.

Scheduled to meet on Dec. 20 in Chicago, two of college basketball's most storied programs will resume home-site games with the Wildcats visiting Pauley Pavilion on Dec. 3, 2015 in their first trip to Los Angeles since December 1959.

UCLA plays in Lexington for the first time since February 1961 with a Dec. 3, 2016 matchup at Rupp.

Kentucky coach John Calipari said in a release on Monday that ''not only does Big Blue Nation get to see two of the historic programs in Rupp Arena, it gives our fans on the other side of the country a chance to see our team in person.''

Kentucky unanimous No. 1 in AP poll

December 8, 2014

Kentucky is still No. 1, and this time on top of every ballot.

The Wildcats (9-0) became a unanimous No. 1 team in the new AP poll Monday, getting the first-place votes on all 64 ballots cast.

Syracuse spent two weeks as a unanimous No. 1 last season.

Wisconsin had been getting some first-place votes before its 80-70 loss last week to Duke. The Badgers slipped from second to fifth in the new rankings.

Duke (8-0) replaced Wisconsin at No. 2, jumping ahead of No. 3 Arizona (8-0), which stayed undefeated with a 66-63 overtime victory against No. 9 Gonzaga over the weekend.

Louisville was up one spot to fourth. Virginia, Villanova, Texas, Gonzaga and Kansas rounded out the top 10.

Michigan State dropped out of the poll for the first time since December 2011, a streak of 58 consecutive polls. That was third-longest current run behind Duke (141) and Kansas (109).

Washington (7-0) made the highest debut of four newcomers at 17th.

For the first time since the final poll of the 2010-11 season, neither Michigan State nor Michigan is ranked.

The Wolverines (6-2) were 17th before their 72-70 loss Saturday to NJIT.

Michigan State (6-3) fell from 19th after a 79-78 overtime loss to Notre Dame (8-1), one of the poll newcomers at No. 25.

Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

-- Wizards 133, Celtics 132, 2OT-- Wizards were up 16 after the third quarter.

-- Hawks 108, Pacers 92-- Atlanta is a quiet 14-6; pretty good team.

-- SMU 80, UCSB 73 OT-- Gaucho star Alan Williams only had nine points.

-- Brown 77, Providence 67-- Third straight loss for the Big East's Friars.

-- 48 of 53 Green Bay Packers have never played for another NFL team.

-- Jason Hammel gets two years, $20M from the Cubs. What a country.

**********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.........

13) Either Baylor/TCU got hosed out of going to the 4-team playoff because the Big X doesn’t have a championship game, which they can’t because it’s a 10-team league (have to have 12 for a title game). Does this mean they add Cincinnati/UConn and go to 12 teams? It’s a question they have to consider, or this could happen every year. Downside to that is they’d have to split their $$$ 12 ways instead of 10. Interesting decision they have.

12) Looked it up this weekend: Pete Rose got on base 5,929 times in his career, most of anyone in baseball. He never cheated; how does he not get in the Hall of Fame? He wasn’t perfect, he broke rules and paid a very public price for it. Time to move on and give him the plaque he has more than earned.

11) Jeff Fisher sent out six captains Sunday for Rams’ game in Washington: the six guys the Rams have as a result of the RGIII trade with the Redskins. Wow, talk about thumbing your nose at someone; then he faked a PAT in the third quarter, when the Rams led 15-0 and that worked. Daniel Snyder must’ve had a fairly lousy Sunday.

10) 49ers are 43-17-1 under Jim Harbaugh, but everyone expects him to leave after this season; keep in mind they were 46-82 in the eight years before he got there. I would be very, very slow to let him walk, but its not my decision.

9) Big 14, a Midwestern college sports league that also has Rutgers (New Jersey), Maryland and Penn State, announced their 2018 basketball tournament will be in Madison Square Garden, the week before its traditional date. So Michigan-Indiana-Ohio State-Wisconsin et all will be trudging off to the Big Apple for five days of fun? How does this make sense? Will they schedule non-league games for the next week, when all the other big conferences are having their tournaments?

8) ACC won the first ten ACC-Big 10 basketball challenges, but since the conferences scrambled to accommodate football, the Big 14 is 4-0-2 in the last six. ACC really weakened itself in basketball when it added Virginia Tech, Boston College and to a lesser extent, Miami and Florida State (though Miami is very good this year). Football money seems to speak loudest of all in college sports.

7) Carolina Panthers are 4-8-1 and a half-game out of first place in the NFC South; that’s how weird this season has been.

6) In his last five games, Carolina rookie WR Kelvin Benjamin has been targeted 47 times but caught only 21 balls, which helps explain why the Panthers had been struggling to win games; Cam Newton needs him to keep up his high level of play, since he is by far their best option at WR.

5) Nick Markakis got $44M for four years from Atlanta, which seemed (relatively) kind of low but then we find out he may need neck surgery this winter, which explains a lot. He’s a good player, a dependable player and will help the Braves.

4) Former NY Knick/US Senator Bill Bradley called Spurs coach Gregg Popovich to tell him that watching the Spurs play rekindled his enthusiasm for NBA basketball. What a compliment!!! Bradley is a brilliant guy who thrived as a shooter for the Knicks team that was two titles in the early 70’s; he’s written several books and if politics wasn’t so TV-centric, could’ve been elected President. He’s not a glad hander or a BS artist, so he never made it as far as he should have.

3) Houston Cougars fired football coach Tony Levine, so four of 76 bowl coaches won’t be coaching that team in their bowl game this season. Curious to see how high this numbers gets; every high major coach that gets fired sets off a domino effect.

2) A’s traded Brandon Moss to Cleveland for a AA infielder Monday, 3rd of their seven All-Stars from LY to already be off the team, then sent Jeff Samardzija to the White Sox- they might as well trade Sean Doolittle; who needs a closer when you’re never going to be ahead in the ninth inning? Not going to recognize the 2015 A’s, at least not in spring training or in April. Awesome.

1) Packers 43, Falcons 37-- In their last six home games, Green Bay outscored its opponents 184-30 in the first half, an average of 31-5.

8-0 Villanova held VCU/Michigan to 54 ppg in winning pair on neutral Brooklyn court, its only top 100 games; Wildcats play Big East tourney in MSG every year, so they've been here before. Illinois lost at Miami by 9, beat Baylor by 8 in its two top 100 games. Teams are similar in almost every aspect, other than Villanova should have edge in crowd support.

Bowling Green plays its subs 43% of time (#9); they're 5-1 vs schedule #311, losing at WKU by 10, winning at Drake/Detroit. Falcons have new coach but experienced team; they're forcing turnovers 23.1% of time but are stepping up in class- #120 Detroit is best team they played. Dayton is 3-1 vs top 150 teams, with wins by 2-12-9 points (lost to UConn).

Michigan lost to #261 NJIT Saturday, they played Syracuse week ago tonite; Eastern Michigan plays same 2-3 as Orange. Young Wolverines have trip to Arizona this weekend. Eagles lost by 9 at Dayton in first road game after playing one of 10 easiest schedules in nation so far; Eagles have three non-D-I wins and no wins vs top 200 teams.

Experienced Wichita State has three top 100 wins and OT loss at Utah; Shockers will be anxious to play Big East foe, especially since Creighton jumped from Valley to Big East LY. All five Wichita wins are by 15+ points. 7-0 Seton Hall has two top 100 Ws, (GW/Ill State); this is their first true road game. Shockers force turnovers 24.7% of time (#22).

Bradley is 3-5 vs #324 schedule, losing top 100 games by 8 at TCU, by 28 at Memphis; Braves are turning ball over 23.9% of time- the Memphis game was their only true road game. Kansas State lost four of its last six games but is 3-0 vs teams outside top 200, winning by 30-10-18 points. Wildcats are only 4-4, but have 88-79 win on neutral floor vs Purdue.

Texas A&M beat Arizona State by point Saturday after being down 11 at half; this is Aggies' first true road game. A&M is 2-1 vs top 100 teams, its first top 50 game; they're forcing turnovers 25 % of time (#19). Bears are 7-1 with four top 100 wins, three of which were away from home-- they're making 38.1% from arc-- opponents have made only 23% of 3's.

First road trip for 7-1 Indiana team thats played 5th-easiest schedule in nation, losing to #106 Eastern Washington; Hoosiers beat Pitt of ACC by 12last week, also beat SMU by 6. Louisville is forcing turnovers 27.7% of time, holding teams to 22.8% of 3's; Cardinals have two top 100 wins, beating Minnesota by 13 in its only game away from Yum! Center.

IUPUI is 2-5 with both wins by hoop; three of its last five games were decided by 3 or less points. Jaguars lost by 20 at Purdue, at Evansville by 27, only games they got blown out of. Xavier is 6-2, winning by 33 in its only game against team ranked outside top 150. Musketeers are shooting 59% inside arc- they have first true road game at Mizzou on Saturday.

Marist is 1-7 under yet another new coach, losing three road games by 3-18-22 points; Red Foxes are turning ball over 23.8% of time, making 31% of its 3's and they take lot of them- they scored 44 ppg in MAAC losses over weekend. Penn won last two games after 0-5 start, but neither team they beat is in top 300. Quakers are turning ball over 25.7% of time.

Belmont won last six games since opening loss at Wright State, winning three road games, last two by total of three points; Bruins are making 40.1% of their 3's. Evansville is 6-1, winning by 19 at Miami OH in its onely true road game- they lost by hoop to Green Bay on a neutral floor for only loss. Aces are shoioting 57% inside arc, 39% outside it.

South Dakota State lost both its true road games by total of seven points, at Buffalo/Idaho; Jackrabbits are making only 28.9% of 3's- they lost by 2-13 points in only games vs top 200 teams. Rebuilding Saint Louis lost three of seven games vs D-I teams; three of four wins were by exactly 3 points. Billkens are one of ten least-experienced teams in country.

Creighton had big win at intrastate rival Nebraska Sunday night- they've got St Mary's coming in Saturday, don't figure to take South Dakota very seriously. USD is 2-6 vs D-I teams with pair of OT losses; Coyotes lost by 11-4 points in only top 100 games. Bluejays take lot of 3's, make 35% of them- they won by 27-18-22 points in games vs non-top 200 teams.

UC-Davis outscored Eastern Illinois 11-5 over last 5:36 to win 63-61 on Nov 20; Aggies were 10-20 from arc, Panthers 6-11-- EIU was 15-26 on foul line, which hurt. 6-1 Davis (#12 in experience) lost by 8 at Idaho on Saturday; they're 3-0 at home with win over Utah State, but they've also played one of 15 easiest schedules in US. EIU is 0-3 on road, losing by 11-5-22 points- they lost 54-49 at Cincinnati, not a bad showing.

Mid-Major Report

December 9, 2014

As the 2014-15 college hoops season swings into its second month of action, we have had ample time to peruse the mid-major landscape. And, as usual, we think we might have found a few nuggets that might be flying under the radar and could provide good spread value as we progress through December and prepare for conference cage action to swing into gear next month.

We've also identified a handful of teams that could be false alarms, which is often the case due to watered-down non-conference schedules.

Thus, here's the early season mid-major update, in conferfence alphabetical order, identifying the occasional potential overvalued side as well as teams on the ascent. Be on the lookout for these teams in the coming weeks...

AMERICAN

Sorry to offend fans of the American who might bristle at the "mid-major" label. After all, loop member UConn did win the national title last April. But league membership has been fluid, with teams joining the loop since last year, many of those still with very much having a mid-major look.

Tulane...The Wave's early 6-1 SU mark has gained some notice. That's partly because HC Ed Conroy has 90% of his offense back from last season, and Tulane is scoring nearly 80 ppg thru the first month while shooting nearly 50% from the floor, led by Conroy's three-pronged G attack featuring jr. Louis Dabney (13 ppg). But the Wave's early schedule has been soft (only three of first seven on the board), and Tulane failed its toughest test to date when whipped by Wake Forest, 71-49, in the opener. We're not ready to "buy" yet on Tulane.

UCF...Another potential false alarm in the early going, the Knights, like Tulane, have been able to benefit from a very marginal early slate to win five of their first six games. Remember, UCF is still in heavy rebuild mode for HC Donnie Jones after losing its three top scorers from last season, and the schedule was intentionally downgraded early to give the new roster time to ferment. Encouraging has been the shooting at a 49.8% clip, which ranked 21st in the country thru Dec. 3, and hometown Orlando frosh product B.J. Taylor (team-best 13 ppg) has taken advantage. But the Knights have not covered their only two games to appear on the board and were hammered in their toughest test vs. Davidson on Nov. 26. As with Tulane, we're not biting yet on UCF.

ATLANTIC 10

Davidson...It looks like the Wildcats might make a smoother adjustment to their new A-10 alignment than many believed. Vet HC Bob McKillop lost three key contributors from last year's 20-game winner in the SoCon, but has reformulated the Davidson mix and has the Wildcats running as they did in the Steph Curry years. Davidson is scoring a whopping 86.5 ppg (8th nationally), with holdover Gs Tyler Kalinoski and Jack Gibbs (both better than 15 ppg) now joined by electric 6-7 frosh swingman Peyton Aldridge (11.7 ppg; also nearly 6 rpg and hitting 50% of his triples) as part of a dynamic, uptempo attack that has been able to stretch the margin on several lesser foes. Due to this firepower, we would not be reluctant to lay points with the Cats vs. some of their upcoming foes, though the slate will begin to upgrade when conference play begins next month.

St. Bonaventure...The Bonnies have flown under the radar before, but such is our respect for shrewd HC Mark Schmidt that we always keep an eye on what is going on at Olean. Schmidt's latest creation features several new components, including sweet-stroking juco SG Marcus Posley (team-leading 15 ppg) and whippet-like 5-11 frosh G Jaylen Adams, while another juco, Iskeem Alston, is making an impression at the point. With enough of Schmidt's holdovers (such as jr. F Dion Wright and last year's high-profile juco, 6-4 G Andell Cumberbatch) stepping into more-featured roles, the Bonnies warrant some attention in the next few weeks. At 5-1 SU, and with handy wins covers vs. nearby foes Niagara and Buffalo (noteworthy because the underdogs in these regional Western NY matchups have historically fared well), Bona could provide more value against a series of upcoming beatable foes before A-10 play commences in January.

BIG SKY

Eastern Washington...The Eagles and respected HC Jim Hayford (a disciple of Azusa Pacific's NAIA coaching legend Bill Odell, under whom Hayford worked from 1990-99) look as if they might be the team to beat in a wide-open Big Sky, which has a vacuum at the top of the loop after graduation losses and the departure of HC Wayne Tinkle (to Oregon State) have downgraded recent loop power Montana. EWU, competitive in recent years, might be stepping into that breach, as Hayford's uptempo attack is scoring 85.3 ppg and shooting an astounding 54.2% from the floor (ranking fourth nationally). Lots of offense featuring returnees G Tyler Harvey (21 ppg; last year's Big Sky scoring champ) and 6-7 PF Venky Jois (19.6 ppg), who are without a doubt the best 1-2 scoring punch in the Sky. The Eagles already notched an easy cover at SMU and opened plenty of eyes with an outright win at Indiana (which raised the temperature a few degrees beneath Tom Crean's hot seat). EWU has several more "board" games upcoming for the duration of December before Sky action begins in January. The Eagles also have an "all-name" candidate (we always like to highlight those) in Las Vegas product frosh G Sir Washington, who is seeing about 10 minutes of action per game in the early going. Remember, those Big Sky games are readily available in Las Vegas sports books as "extra" games on the board.

BIG WEST

UC Davis...We don't have to talk about the Aggies any longer as just hoping to get noticed by UCD alum Kimberly Guilfoyle. Now, UCD appears to be a legitimate team to watch in the Big West. The Aggies have broken 6-0 SU from the gate with a collection of wins over mostly similar-level opposition, along with an eye-opening 77-70 home victory over Stew Morrill's always-tough MW rep, Utah State. Head coach Jim Les returned both of his top scorers, prolific G Corey Hawkins (son of former NBA player Hersey Hawkins, a college teammate at Bradley of HC Les; 18.2 ppg; 56% beyond arc) and F Josh Ritchart (12.3 ppg), while 6-6 UC Riverside transfer F Josh Fox (10 ppg) has added another scoring option to the Davis mix. Defense was an issue last season for the Aggies, who allowed nearly 49% FGs and almost 80 ppg, but stop end upgrades have contributed to the fast start. As long as Hawkins and Ritchart can stay healthy, Les likely keeps the Ags in the Big West mix. And Ms. Guilfoyle is welcome to give us a call to talk about her favorite college team.

CONFERENCE USA

Old Dominion...Several warning shots have already been fired by the Monarchs, a Big Dance regular up until a few years ago when the program collapsed under HC Blaine Taylor. Now, former Virginia and American U HC Jeff Jones has not only stabilized the situation in his second year on the job, but has ODU poised for a breakthrough, as the recent 73-67 upset over VCU would indicate. And avoiding a potential letdown in their next game, Jones' troops won and covered on the road at George Mason. Earlier, in the Virgin Islands Tourney, the Monarchs beat LSU. ODU is doing a lot with its defense, which hasn't yet allowed over 69 points. The Monarchs returned most of their firepower from last season, including a stacked backcourt featuring last year's C-USA second-leading returning scorer Aaron Bacote (15.5 ppg last season), though in the early going it has been Campbell Camels transfer G Trey Freeman (18.4 ppg) who has emerged as the sharpest edge on attack, and greatly helps an offense that needed another go-to threat to emerge beyond Bacote after the team produced just 64 ppg a year ago. Rugged PF Richard Ross also plays much bigger than 6-6 and is a defensive force on the blocks, while George Mason transfer sr. G Jonathan "Roone" Arledge has improved the depth at Jones' disposal. Remember, ODU improved by a nation's best 13 wins last year (to 18-18) in Jones' first season, and the proud history of this program suggests the recent downturn was probably just a blip on the college hoops radar screen.

HORIZON

Valparaiso...Midwest sources believe HC Bryce Drew has his alma mater poised to make a run at the Big Dance. The Crusaders, who tailed off at the end of last season, have started fast and generated some buzz with their recent romp through the Music City Challenge in Nashville, cruising through a representative field consisting of Drake, Murray State, and Portland. Now 8-1 SU, and with the only loss at Missouri in the second game of the season, Valpo has not lost since and also has four spread covers on the trot after Wednesday's win at Eastern Kentucky. The Crusaders are shooting better than 49% from the floor, and 6-8 soph F Alec Peters (19.4 ppg) has been on a recent rampage. But the big boosts for the Crusaders have been juco G Darien Walker (12 ppg) and frosh G Tevonn Walker (10 ppg) who have added an extra sharp edge to the attack and prevent defenses from devoting too much attention to Peters. Valpo could be the team to beat in the Horizon.

MID-AMERICAN

Eastern Michigan...Former Jim Boeheim disciple Rob Murphy (now in his fourth year at EMU) has done a pretty good job mimicking the 'Cuse in Ypslianti, down to the controlled tempo and Boeheim-like zone defense. And this might be a better Eagle edition than last year's 22-win outfit that made it to the second round of the CIT. Murphy, who has been able to lure several impactful transfers the past few years, has an especially deep bench, with ten players averaging double-digit minutes, with three returning double-digit scorers led by all-name G Raven Lee (15 ppg) and former juco F Karrington Ward (14 ppg). One of the transfers, ex-DePaul G Jodan Price, has a green light to shoot from whenever he enters the game (though he's only hitting 23%). EMU has kept all foes save go-go Oakland (which bowed 89-77 to the Eagles) to 62 points or fewer. The schdeule is going to get much harder in December (Dayton, Michigan, and Michigan State are on deck), but Murphy's Syracuse imitators should not be overlooked.

MISSOURI VALLEY

Evansville...Flying a bit under the radar are the Purple Aces, who have been on our secondary watch list since the beginning of the season. E'ville returns all five starters for HC Marty Simmons, including prolific-scoring G D.J. Balentine (last year's top Valley scorer at 22.8 ppg; 19.8 ppg thus far in the new season), who paces an offense shooting an astounding 54% from the floor. Moreover, Villanova transfer G Mislav Brzoja has added another scorer to the mix. There is good spacing on the floor with 6-10 Egidijus Mockevicius (14 ppg) a force to be reckoned with on the blocks and preventing too much attention being paid to Balentine and the others out on the perimeter. Note that the Aces are not particularly three-point crazy, shooting only about 13 triples pg, with Balentine is more at home careening into the paint. Only setback to date for Simmons' team was a close 64-62 loss to Horizon co-favorite Green bay at the recent Gulf Coast Challenge in Estero, Florida, where the Purple Aces also beat Fresno State and San Francisco.

MOUNTAIN WEST

Colorado State...Last week's win at the Great Alaska Shootout and subsequent home success at Moby Arena vs. Tim Floyd's combative UTEP have kept the Rams unbeaten into the second week of December. Larry Eustachy's shrewd offseason roster additions are already paying dividends, with 6-7 NC Central F Stanton Kidd (14 ppg) and his non-stop motor already making positive contributions at both ends of the floor. Meanwhile, after the offseason transfer of G Jon Octeus, Eustachy hurriedly filled the gaps in the backcourt, with one-time Ole Miss signee and juco G Gian Clavell (11 ppg), plus UALR transfer G John Gillon (50% beyond arc), filling the post-Octeus gap and then some, adding extra dimensions to the perimeter around former Arizona transfer Daniel Bejarano (16.3 ppg LY, 13 ppg thus far in the new season as he shares a bit more of the scoring responsibilities). Meanwhile, 6-7 former Navy transfer PF J.J. Avila (15.3 ppg) is an oak on the blocks who led CSU in scoring (16.6 ppg) and assists (3.4 pg) last season.

Wyoming...Larry Shyatt's Cowboys have broken quickly from the gate the past two seasons, only to be sidelined by injuries and ineligibilities along the way. For the moment, however, all looks good in Laramie, especially with do-everything 6-9 F Larry Nance, Jr. (15 ppg) back from last year's knee injury and looking as good as new. And there is plenty of experience in the backcourt with Denver-area products Riley Grabau and Josh Adams in their third year playing alongside one another. Most astounding is Wyo's 54.7% FG shooting, which ranks second in the country, and credited much to the shot selection demanded by Shyatt. The Cowboys served notice in a home beatdown of Pac-12 Colorado on Nov. 22 when limiting the Buffs to just 9 points in the second half of a 56-33 Wyo win, confirming that Shyatt's defensive schemes remain state-of-the-art. What we want to watch in the next few weeks is how Wyo performs away from Laramie, where it played its first seven games (all wins). Upcoming games at SMU and Cal should tell us a bit more about the Cowboys, but so far, so good in Laramie.

WEST COAST

Portland...WCC sources report that this could be HC Eric Reveno's best team in his nine seasons on The Bluff. The Pilots made some noise last season with wins over BYU and Gonzaga, and might be ready to make more of an impact this season. Early efforts have been encouraging, including wins over Drake and Murray State at last week's Music City Challenge in Nashville, and a comfy midweek win over local rival Portland State, which was the fourth cover in the past five spread decisions for Reveno's team. The Pilots have plenty of balance (four DD scorers), including a new bombs-away threat, 6-6 frosh G D'Marques Tyson, a Seattle-area product who escaped Lorenzo Romar at U-Dub and has electrified the fans enjoying the marvelous sightlines at the Chiles Center, hitting 58% from the floor and scoring almost 11 ppg while averaging only 12 minutes of playing time. Mason's 25-point effort in Portland's lone loss (vs. Valpo in the Nashville tourney) opened more eyes and will doubtless prompt more minutes from Reveno moving forward. There is plenty of experience on hand for the Pilots, too, as 6-5 sr. swingman Kevin Bailey (13. 1 ppg; 16.5 ppg LY) has already been established as one of the top swingmen in the WCC, while soph G Alec Wintering is a bombardier canning 56% of his triples in the early going. Most encouraging, however, might be the improvement of 6-10 Ukrainian import C Volodymyr Gerun, who is more than tripling his previous scoring (up to 10.7 ppg) and rebounding (up to 6 pg) and providing Reveno a potential twin-tower presence alongside 6-11 Dutch product sr. Thomas van der Mars (10 ppg). Coast observers believe this is a very intriguing roster mix at Reveno's disposal, and upcoming games vs. Oregon State and UNLV could provide opportunities for the Pilots to further burnish their credentials.

Tuesday's Tip Sheet

December 9, 2014

**Villanova vs. Illinois**

-- Villanova (8-0 straight up, 6-1 against the spread) is one of two Big East schools (Seton Hall is the other) which remains undefeated. The Wildcats will put that unbeaten ledger on the line tonight against Illinois at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

-- As of early this morning, most books had Villanova installed as a four-point favorite. A total had not been released yet.

-- Jay Wright's team kept its record unscathed by trouncing St. Joseph's 74-46 as a 19.5-point home favorite. Josh Hart paced three players in double figures with 12 points and eight rebounds, while Darun Hilliard and Phil Booth chipped in with 11 points apiece.

-- Villanova has been a single-digit favorite twice, going 2-0 ATS. The Wildcats trounced VCU by a 77-53 count as three-point favorites at Barclays Arena in Brooklyn. One nights late at the same venue, they beat Michigan 60-55 as 4.5-point 'chalk.'

-- Illinois (7-1 SU, 4-2 ATS) saw its undefeated start come to an end last week in a 70-61 loss at Miami. The Illini got 22 points and 12 rebounds out of Rayvonte Rice in Coral Gables, but it wasn't enough and UM backers cashed tickets as three-point 'chalk.'

-- Illinois bounced back to beat American 70-55 in a non-lined game four days after the loss at Miami. Malcolm Hill scored a team-best 13 points.

-- John Groce's squad is led by Rice, who averages team-highs in scoring (17.4 points per game), rebounding (7.3 RPG) and steals (2.1 SPG).

-- Villanova is hoping to see JayVaughn Pinkston return to the form he demonstrated last season, when the bulky forward averaged 14.1 points and 6.1 rebounds per game. Pinskton is shooting only 37.3 percent from the field, scoring at a 8.9 PPG clip. Those are career-low numbers from the senior leader.

-- Totals have been an overall wash for Illinois (2-2).

-- The 'under' is 6-1 overall for Villanova.

-- ESPN will have the broadcast at 7:00 p.m. Eastern.

**Louisville vs. Indiana**

-- As of early this morning, most betting shops had Louisville (7-0 SU, 2-3-1 ATS) listed as an 11-point favorite for the nightcap game at MSG.

-- Indiana (7-1 SU, 4-4 ATS) is led by freshman James Blackmon Jr., who is the top freshman scorer in the country with a 19.5 PPG average. He is shooting better from 3-point range (54.2%) than inside of it (47.9%).

-- Tom Crean's team has won three in a row since losing at home to Eastern Washington by an 88-86 count. The loss to the Eagles sparked further speculation that Crean's job security could be in question. We should note, however, that Eastern Washington is 7-1 with its only loss coming at SMU.

-- IU's best win came last Tuesday at home where it knocked off Pitt 81-69 as a 2.5-point home favorite. Freshman Emmitt Holt exploded for a season-high 15 points and also had five rebounds and two blocked shots. Holt made all six of his attempts from the field in only 19 minutes of playing time. Blackmon and junior point guard Yogi Ferrell scored 13 and 11 points, respectively.

-- Ferrell is averaging 17.3 points, 5.4 assists and 3.4 rebounds per game. He is making 48.4 percent of his shots from the field, 44.8 percent from long distance and 88.6 percent from the free-throw line. Ferrell has a 43/19 assists-to-turnovers ratio.

-- Indiana has been an underdog just once this year, beating SMU 74-68 as a one-point home 'dog on Nov. 20. Blackmon dropped a game-high 26 points on the Mustangs, while Ferrell finished with 13 points, seven assists, five boards and zero turnovers.

-- Rick Pitino's team has a pair of quality wins over Minnesota (81-68) and Ohio St. (64-55). U of L has been a double-digit 'chalk' four times, compiling a 1-3 spread record.

-- U of L is off an 82-57 win over FIU as a 29.5-point home favorite. Anton Gill scored a team-high 15 points in only 18 minutes of playing time off the bench. Montrezl Harrell added 13 points and 12 rebounds.

-- Harrell is averaging team-bests in scoring (16.1 PPG), rebounding (9.4 RPG) and field-goal percentage (60.0%). Terry Rozier is averaging 13.0 points and 5.7 rebounds, while Wayne Blackshear is producing 12.9 points and 5.9 boards per contest.

-- The 'over' has cashed at a lucrative 6-1 clip in IU games.

-- The 'over' has hit at a 2-1 clip in U of L games.

**B.E.'s Bonus Nuggets**

-- Florida improved to 4-4 when it broke out in a big way Monday night at The O-Dome. Billy Donovan's team blew an 18-point lead in the second half this past Friday night in Kansas, eventually losing a 71-65 decision. On that same night, Yale won at UConn on a buzzer-beating shot. But UF took it the Bulldogs early and often en route to an 85-47 win as a 10-point home favorite. Seven Gators scored eight points or more led by Michael Frazier, who had 18 points thanks to draining 4-of-7 attempts from beyond the arc. Kasey Hill dished out 10 assists and made all four of his shots from the field. Dorian Finney-Smith had 14 points in just 18 minutes of playing time, while Chris Walker had a second straight solid performance. In 21 minutes of action, Walker had 13 points, six boards and two blocked shots.

-- Brown scored Monday's major upset by winning 77-67 at Providence as a 15.5-point road underdog. The Bears cashed money-line tickets that paid a 10/1 return at the Westgate SuperBook. That's a bad loss for the Friars, who also fell at Boston College over the weekend.

-- SMU supporters got a fortunate push when Larry Brown's team downed UC-Santa Barbara 80-73 in overtime as a seven-point favorite.

-- As of early this morning, Baylor was a 6.5-point home 'chalk' for tonight's game vs. Texas A&M. The Bears will be without starting guard Kenny Chery, who is expected to miss his fifth straight game due to a foot injury. Chery averages 10.3 PPG.

Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

-- Cavaliers 105, Raptors 101-- Toronto had won 39 games in a row when they led after three quarters.

-- Trailblazers 98, Pistons 86-- Detroit is now an unhealthy 3-19.

-- Braves signed free agent 2B Alberto Callaspo, who isn't any good but it seems like the A's lose a player every day.

-- Pirates re-signed Francisco Liriano for three years, $39M. Good move.

-- Villanova 73, Illinois 59-- Game in NYC was 50-all at one point.

-- Louisville 94, Indiana 74-- Cardinals pulled away once Indiana stopped hitting 3's.

Late Night Update-- Jon Lester gets $155M from the Cubs, for six years.

**********

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud.......

13) I’m guessing Tuesday was a good day to be a White Sox season ticket salesman, with team adding Samardzija/Robertson. Pale Hose are making a run at the playoffs this coming season.

12) Guy in Las Vegas hit a $15 12-team parlay this week that paid him just under $45,000; his last game was Atlanta +12.5. Imagine sitting there with him when the Falcons were down 31-7 at the half?

Had to be kind of exciting in those last few minutes. Would’ve sucked to go 11 for 12 and wind up with bupkus. (Hope he hedged the bet, at least)

11) Cam Newton was in a car accident Tuesday afternoon near Panthers’ stadium; he has a couple breaks in his lower back, is in the hospital and not expected to play Sunday against Tampa Bay. Derek Anderson is the Panthers' backup QB.

10) Not only was it a dismal December day Tuesday, with freezing rain/sleet/icy roads, but I looked at mlbdepthcharts.com and saw they had Ike Davis batting 5th in the A’s prospective lineup for next season. Bleeping fifth. Oy.

9) One of unspoken benefits of the college football playoff: no one talks about the Heisman Trophy anymore; thank the Lord. Before this year, they’d start talking about it in September. Team stuff is always more interesting than individual stuff.

8) There is an NBA ref named Ben Taylor who is only 29 years old; he worked the intense Phoenix-Clipper game Monday night. 29 seems young to be an NBA ref.

7) I don’t give a rat’s ass about the royal family; they could be very nice people for all I know, but what have they done? What do they do? They’re rich/famous for no reason, like reality TV stars. Please go away.

6) UNLV hired a high school coach as its new football coach; Tony Sanchez from Bishop Gorman in Vegas. Keep in mind that Art Briles, Gus Malzahn and Hugh Freeze were all high school coaches at one time, and they’re doing pretty well now. Sanchez needs to recruit some of his Gorman players to make UNLV relevant on the gridiron, one of whom is Cordell Broadus, Snoop Dawg’s son.

5) Tennessee replaced UAB with Bowling Green on next year’s football schedule; UAB dropped football, rifle and bowling last week, for $$$ reasons.

4) Which begs the question, how much does it cost to fund a freakin’ bowling team? Does the bowling coach fly to the northeast to recruit a kid out of a duckpin league in Boston? Does he take a private jet to fly cross country to Vegas to find a kid in Rock ‘n Bowl at Red Rock Casino? Seriously, dropping bowling just seems un-American.

3) NFL record for most receiving yards in a game is Flipper Anderson’s 336, set on a Sunday night in 1989 against the Saints; was looking at some highlights from that season and it turns out when Anderson caught the winning TD in overtime in a playoff game against the Giants later in that ’89 season, the ref was Bob McElwee, who ten years later was also the ref when the Rams won Super Bowl XXXIV, the greatest sporting event ever played.

Good man, Bob McElwee.

2) Green Bay Packers are 9-0 on grass, 1-3 on artificial turf, the one win by a FG in Minnesota. Packers play on a short week in Buffalo this week. On turf. Hmmmm

1) RIP actor Ken Weatherwax, 59, who as a child played Puggsley Addams on the Addams Family, one of my favorite shows as a kid. 59 is too young to die, for sure. He’s probably in heaven today blowing up toy trains with Uncle Fester. RIP, sir.

See spot. See spot bet: This week's best spot bet opportunities

Lookahead spot

Northern Iowa has jumped out to an 8-0 (3-3 ATS) start to the season, earning the No. 24 spot in the national polls this week. The Panthers put that ranking to the test this coming weekend with a road game against another mid-major power - the VCU Rams – and face rival Iowa on a neutral court the weekend before Christmas.

However, lurking Wednesday is a climb up the Rocky Mountains to play the Denver Pioneers. Northern Iowa, which has failed to cover in its last two games as a heavy favorite, not only runs the risk of a looking past the Pioneers but could hit the wall in the thin air of Magness Arena. Denver runs an active Princeton offense with plenty of movement and cuts and is a tough out in its own gym, covering the spread in 11 of its last 13 home games against teams with winning records.

Letdown spot

The Oklahoma City Thunder have the band back together. Russell Westbrook and Kevin Durant have returned from early-season injuries, drastically shifting the dynamic of a team that depended on defense to make up for its fallen stars in the first two months of the schedule. The Thunder can make a big statement regarding their place in the NBA title picture against LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers Thursday.

Oklahoma City will watch the intensity meter go from peak to plop immediately following that showdown with the Cavs. The Thunder will hop on a plane and head to frozen Minnesota that night with the Timberwolves playing hosts Friday. Oklahoma City has been a bad bet on the road – even without this type of letdown spot - bringing a 2-8-1 ATS mark to Minnesota.

Schedule spot

The defending Stanley Cup champs were just starting to sort things out with three wins in their last five games before heading East on an extended road trip, dropping the puck in Buffalo Tuesday. Los Angeles leaves the sun and surf of California for the Canadian cold, with stops in Ottawa, Montreal and Toronto – a string of three road games in four days.

The Kings are a crappy 3-4-2-2 outside of the Staples Center and take on the Sens (Thursday), Habs (Friday), and Leafs (Sunday), who boast a combined 25-13-1-3 record on home ice. Los Angeles has given up just 25 total goals in 16 home games, but has watched 31 pucks find the back of the net in just 11 road outings. And the Kings’ power play is among the lowest in the league away from home, with an 11.8 PP percentage. Those three Canadian foes all have home power play success rates of 21.5 or higher.

Armadillo's Write-Up

Wednesday, December 10

Providence lost its last three games after a 6-0 start, losing to Brown by 10 Monday; Friars won last four games with Rhode Island, winning by a point LY, after wins by 15-19-13 points. URI is 5-2, losing two of three top 100 games; they beat Nebraska in OT, lost by 16 to Kansas, by 3 to Ga Tech on neutral floors. Rams are turning ball over 22.4% of time.

First true road game for 6-1 Kansas squad whose depth takes a hit with Traylor (suspended) out here; Jayhawks lost badly to Kentucky, beat Michigan State to win Orlando Classic- they're not shooting well, but are grabbing 39.9% of missed shots. Georgetown was 1-2 vs top 30 teams in Bahamas; other four teams they beat were all cupcakes.

UL-Lafayette is 2-4 vs D-I teams but only played one home game; they turn ball over 25% of time (#334), shoot 26.8% from arc. Louisiana Tech lost 89-80 at home to ULL last year, in game they never led- they were 4-20 from arc. 7-1 Bulldogs have played bottom 10 schedule so far, losing by 7 at Temple- they've beaten couple of stiff teams on road also.

Towson-Temple split pair of home wins last couple years; Tigers won 75-69 LY, after trailing by 7 with 8:44 left. Towson is 7-2 but lost by 28-32 points in its two games vs teams ranked above #177. Temple is 5-3, with only one win by more than nine points- they've won three of last four games, but are shooting just 24.6% behind the arc.

8-1 Penn State is 3-0 vs teams in top 200, winning by 2-6-3 points; they beat Duquesne last two years by 9-10 points. Lions won last six games, five by 6 or less points. Dukes lost by 14 to Pitt, only team they played ranked in top 250- they also lost to NJIT, team that beat Michigan over weekend. Duquesne is 2-2 vs D-I teams despite making 43% from arc.

BYU won seven of last eight games with Utah, losing 81-64 in Salt Lake City LY; Utes lost last seven visits to Provo, with six of seven losses by 8+ points. 7-2 BYU lost both its top 100 games in OT on Maui, by 5 to San Diego State, 2 to Purdue. Utah hasn't played in week since beating Wichita State in OT; they lost only road game 53-49 at San Diego State.

Home side won five of last six Colorado State-Colorado games; Rams lost last three visits to Boulder by 9-7-19 points. First true road game for the Rams, who are #6 in nation in experience; they're 3-0 vs top 100 teams, with last two of those by total of five points. Buffs scored 45 ppg in losing both their top 100 games; best team they've beaten is #109 USF.

San Diego State shot 20.4% from floor at Washington in awful 49-36 loss Sunday; Aztecs are missing injured Quinn- they're shooting 28.6% from arc, 43.9% inside it, but are 5-2. Long Beach State is 0-4 with three losses by 14+; in last game, they lost by 29 at SF Austin. 49ers turn ball over 22.8% of time, bad news vs Aztrcs' pressure defense.

8-1 Wyoming (#319 schedule) lost by 13 at SMU in its only road game; Cowboys are shooting 64.5% inside arc (#2 in nation), playing very slow (#348) tempo- they beat couple of top 100 teams at home, with a 56-33 win over Colorado. Cal won its last four games, last three by 7 points or less; Golden Bears are #9 team in eFG%, interesting matchup here.

Iona won its last four games with Rider, winning by 10-7 in last two here; Gaels allowed 93 ppg in losing last two games, falling 92-89 in conference opener at Monmouth. Iona plays #3 tempo in nation, is making 44.6% on arc in 4-3 start vs #48 schedule. Rider won last two games, allowing 62 ppg after four in row before that; they're shooting 29.9% from arc.

St Peter's is 3-6 losing by 12 at Brown in game vs another Ivy opponent; Peacocks turn ball over 22% of time but are making 38.7% from arc- they are 1-3 vs top 200 teams, with best win over #175 Rutgers. Princeton is 3-6 vs #244 schedule; they're 0-3 in true road games, losing to Lafayette by 17, FDU by 3, George Mason by 3 (2-5 vs top 200 teams).

8-0 Northern Iowa won by a hoop in OT at SF Austin in only true road game; Panthers beat George Mason in OT last game, have Saturday date with VCU coming up. Denver is 4-3, with #283 Idaho State best victim; they're 0-3 vs top 100 teams, but all three were on road. Denver runs the Princeton offense, not easy to prepare for in 2-3 days.

No easy way to get from Charlotte to Missoula; 6-1 Davidson won by 26 at UCF in only true road game- their only loss is to North Carolina by 18. Wildcats are holding team to 23.4% from arc. Montana is 2-4 vs D-I teams with two double OT losses, including one at Cal; Griz is 0-3 vs top 100 teams, losing by 17-5-2 points- they won only home game by 12.

Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

NFL trends to ponder, with Week 15 upon us........

-- Rams covered four of last five as a home favorite.

-- Detroit covered eight of last ten division games.

-- Eagles covered seven of last nine as a home favorite.

-- Colts covered 16 of their last 23 home games.

-- Chiefs covered twice in last 10 games as a division favorite.

-- 49ers are 10-2-1 vs spread in their last thirteen road games.

**********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Our top 8, bottom 5 in NFL.......

32) Redskins—A complete train wreck. Sonny Jurgensen could come out of the radio booth and play and they’d be better off; except he’s 80. They paid a king’s ransom to draft RGIII, but the kid doesn’t do classwork necessary to excel on the field. Whoops. They’ll have a very interesting offseason.

31) Titans—Trailed at halftime the last two weeks, 23-0/24-0; have feeling they’re trying not to win, since the coach is secure and they’d be better off with #1 pick, either to trade or draft a cornerstone player. Not trying is bad.

30) Jets— Losing every week when you ARE trying might be worse; Rex Ryan is auditioning for his next job, Geno Smith is terrible and Michael Vick is just trying to replenish his bank account. They just need to start over, much like an expansion team; it would be an easier fix that way.

29) Raiders—Will be part of Jim Harbaugh sweepstakes; they’ve lived thru salary cap hell, should be able to improve their roster in the offseason. Tough division, but at least they think they’ve found their franchise QB.

28) Jaguars—If Giants can Tom Coughlin and I had a bad NFL team, I’d be tempted to bring Coughlin in to run my program, not as a coach but as the President, establish an infrastructure on what a team should be like, from top to bottom. This would work.

8) Cowboys—Needed 10-day break, especially the defense, Romo’s back; rematch in Philly Sunday night is a big game.

7) Chargers—You wonder how things would’ve been different in the ’04 draft had Eli Manning agreed to play for San Diego, the Steelers took Philip Rivers and the Giants Big Ben. I firmly believe Rivers is as good as Manning and both are a cut below Roethlisberger, but Rivers is the one without a Super Bowl ring. I mean, Trent Dilfer won a Super Bowl and Dan Marino didn’t; life is weird sometimes.

6) Colts— Indy’s receivers had trouble getting open on a grass field in December in Cleveland Sunday, something to think about when the playoffs roll around; Reggie Wayne is playing hurt and it shows. Indy-Dallas game next week is in a dome, should be entertaining.

5) Seahawks—Have feeling this week’s game with 49ers will be a fierce struggle, the Niners’ last stand in the Harbaugh era. Teams looking for a new head coach have to stop just looking at Seattle defensive gurus; maybe the head coach is the reason that defense is so good.

4) Broncos—Its hard to watch Denver play the last three weeks and not wonder if Peyton Manning is hurt or has a sore arm; they’re just so much different now. He threw only 20 passes against the Bills; that’s usually below his halftime numbers. Maybe its just me being a conspiracy theorist, but its hard to envision them winning the AFC this year.

3) Cardinals—Probably too high at #3; hopefully they’ll lose in St Louis tonight and I can drop them next week. Love the aggressive nature Arians coaches with, but he has to temper with no viable backup now behind Stanton.

2) Patriots—If not for Robert Kraft buying this team 20+ years ago, the Patriots would’ve moved to St Louis and the Rams would be playing in Hartford. That’s a better what-if game than the Rivers-Eli-Big Ben thing.

1) Packers—Everyone who thinks these teams on TV know it all, here are two things:
a) Aaron Rodgers didn’t get a college scholarship out of high school
b) As many people thought the Colts should’ve drafted Ryan Leaf out of college as Peyton Manning. Manning is still an All-Star; Leaf just got released from prison.

Sometimes, you just never know.
