Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

Six of my favorite college team nicknames.......

-- South Dakota State Jackrabbits-- Pretty darned good basketball program.

-- TCU Horned Frogs-- Solid in football; uphill struggle in basketball.

-- Cal-Irvine Anteaters-- Apparently, anteaters make a noise......."Zot!!!"

-- Marshall Thundering Herd-- Their uniforms are an odd shade of bright green.

-- Southern Utah Thunderbirds--- Saw lot of SUU shirts this week in Las Vegas.

-- Grand Canyon Antelopes-- Basketball team is coached by Dan Majerle.

**********

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but........

13) Canisius 108, UL-Monroe 96, 3OT-- Griffins were down 13 with 1:02 left in game, tied it up, missed two FTs with 0:01 left in one of the OTs, then shut ULM out 12-0 in third overtime for the win. ULM's coach was sick and missed the game, which was played in a nice arena with about 80 people watching-- I was at the game before this one in the same arena. Good hamburgers.

12) Michigan State 99, Oakland 93 OT-- Grizzlies are coached by Greg Kampe; he is a very good coach who gives his players lot of freedom. This game could be red flag short-term for Spartans, who are without star Valentine for couple weeks.

11) Virginia 63, California 62 OT-- Golden Bears were up 7 at half, up 5 in first OT, but Virginia scored last six points of the game to win. Cavaliers made 7-12 on the arc, shot only 33% inside the arc.

10) Texas Tech 65, Little Rock 53-- First loss of season for the Trojans, whose new coach Beard was a Tech assistant for ten years.

9) South Carolina 75, St John's 61-- Frank Martin's Gamecocks are still unbeaten; they've played the #295 schedule, with top 100 wins over Tulsa/Clemson.

8) Houston 94, Wyoming 89, 2OT-- Kelvin Sampson's team is 9-2, but against #350 schedule, 2nd-easiest in country so far.

7) Pistons 93, Heat 92-- Stan VanGundy has Detroit at 17-12; much improved.

6) Ball State lost head football coach Pete Lembo to Maryland, where he will be the special teams coach/assistant HC. Second year in a row a MAC school lost its HC to be an assistant for a big money program- Dan Enos left Central Michigan LY to be a coordinator at Arkansas.

5) Iowa State 81, Cincinnati 79-- Quality road win for Cyclones after their loss to Northern Iowa over weekend; State played only seven guys, with two subs playing 16-11 minutes. Cyclones really need to have a big recruiting class this year.

4) Mike Leake gets $80M for five years to pitch for St Louis. His career record is a decent 64-52, 3.88 in 172 career starts- great majority of that was in small ballpark in Cincinnati, so bigger park, better team-- that adds up to $16M a year.

3) Kansas 70, San Diego State 57-- Aztecs are disappointing 5-5, Mountain West figures to be a one-bid league- they don't have anyone ranked above #70. San Diego St is a lousy offensive team; their defensive numbers are about same as usual.

2) TCU's star WR Josh Doctson will miss Horned Frogs' bowl game, very good news for Oregon. Doctson's presence in lineup opened up lot of stuff for other offensive options for TCU- they struggled badly with him and QB Boykin hurt.

1) Hawai'i 68, Northern Iowa 52-- NCAA handed down penalties to Hawai'i during day yesterday, but oddly, Warriors can go to NCAAs this year- they'll be ineligible in 2016-17. This is temporary good news for a team that might win the Big West.

Armadillo's Write-Up

Wednesday, December 23

Cleveland State won its last two games by total of 8 points after 2-7 start plagued by tough schedule made before two graduate transfers bolted for greener pastures. Vikings turn ball over 20.7% of time, have #307 eFG%; they lost by 10 at Bowling Green LY, after leading by 7 at half. BG is on third coach in three years; they lost their last two games by 15-36 points.

Illinois won its last four games after 3-5 start; they beat Missouri in last two meetings by combined four points- this game is played in St Louis, a neutral site. Illini is 4-0 vs teams outside top 150, but none of wins were by more than 12 points. Mizzou is #339 in experience; they lost couple games to Arizona/North Carolina by 36-14 points- they're 5-0 vs teams outside top 100.

Minnesota is disappointing 6-5, with losses to both South Dakota clubs, both at home; Gophers are 5-2 vs teams outside top 100- they're #275 in experience but their schedule is #269 to this point. Milwaukee upset the Badgers in Madison; they lost last game in double OT to South Dakota last Thursday- they're 2-1 on road, losing 86-78 at Notre Dame in a game where they hit 13-25 on arc to cover.

Gonzaga won its last 12 games with LMU, winning at least 12 in row at the Kennel; Zags pounded on Pepperdine in WCC opener Monday, they were 16-26 from arc in easy win. Lions lost by 27 at Portland in opener Monday; they're 0-4 vs teams in top 160, with losses by 24-8-9-1- loss at Boise (67-66) was encouraging, but getting waxed at Portland was not. LMU is 7-12 as WCC road dog under Dunlap.

Home side won six of last seven Pepperdine-Portland games, with Waves losing three of last four visits here, last two by 12-17 points. Over last six years, Pepperdine is 4-1 as WCC road favorite; over last four years, Portland is 6-11-1 as home dog. Pilots made 14-33 on arc in 87-60 win in WCC opener Monday; they force turnovers 20.8% of time (#65), are 3-1 in last four games, after a 4-6 start.

San Diego won three of last four D-I games after 1-5 start, including win over Aztecs at Petco Park; Toreros are shooting 27.9% on arc, have the #333 eFG%, making 59.3% on line. Northridge lost five of last six D-I games but got Kendall Smith eligible, which helps; he had 22 points, four assists in his debut. Matadors are turning ball over 23% of time, but that was before Smith and should improve now.

San Francisco is 5-0 vs Pacific in WCC play, winning by 5-10 points in two games here; Dons lost WCC opener by 22 to St Mary's- they're 7-9 as WCC home favorites last three years. USF is 5-0 vs teams outside top 200, with three wins by 4 or less points. Pacific pulled out an OT win at home vs Santa Clara Monday; Tigers are 8-9 as WCC roaad underdogs.

St Mary's won 18 of last 20 games with Santa Clara, winning last three by 22-13-1 points; Gaels are 16-8-1 as WCC road favorites the last four years. Broncos' last two series wins were both here- they lost OT game at a weak Pacific team Monday- they were 5-2 as WCC home underdog LY. Three of SC's last four losses are by 3 or less points- they turn ball over 20.8% of time. St Mary's lost only true road game, 63-59 at Cal.

BYU lost in OT to Harvard yesterday; two starters played 41:00+ in a game they trailed by 16 early, then led by 4 in OT. Average total in last three Cougar games is 175. New Mexico lost last two games by total of 6 points- they called TO they didn't have with 0:00.1 left Saturday in loss to Rice (90-89). Lobos used all five starters 34:00+ yesterday; one sub played more than six minutes.

Harvard was up 19-3 early yesterday, wound up rallying back in OT to nip BYU 85-82- they had eight guys play 13:00+- two guys played 35+ minutes. Crimson is missing its PG this year- Providence is only one its six losses that was by more than nine points (76-64). Auburn presses so that could be problem; Tigers were down six with 9:30 left yesterday- they're 4-0 vs teams outside top 100.

Washington State is 6-3 vs schedule #323; they lost by 9-28 to only top 200 teams they've played, getting crushed by 28 last nite by an excellent Oklahoma team. Only one guy played more than 29:00. Northern Iowa beat Iowa State on neutral floor Saturday, then lost true road game by 16 to Hawai'i last night; Panthers played two guys 38:00 in game where they hit 6-20 on arc.

Oklahoma is 9-0 with 84-78 win at Memphis in opener, only true road game so far; Sooners pounded Wazzu by 28 last nite, going 10-23 on arc in game that was only 38-31 at half. Oklahoma is making 47.2% for year on arc- they have #18 eFG%. Hawai'i is still eligible for NCAAs for this year (not next), so this is huge game for their resume. Last night was first top 100 win- they lost by 8 at Texas Tech.

SMU is 10-0 but can't go to NCAAs because their coaches cheat; they're 3-0 vs top 100 teams, with wins by 15-2-24 points- they were 25-31 on line in 90-74 win over Kent State Tuesday, Brown's first game as coach this year, after 9-game suspension. Colorado nosed out Penn State 71-70 in game where they shot 39 FTs, Lions 16; Buffs won 11 games in row since losing opener to Iowa State.

Preview: Wolverines (5-7) at Cardinals (10-1)

Date: December 23, 2015 7:00 PM EDT

Short-handed Louisville has just one more chance to prepare before the real meat of its schedule begins this weekend.

The 16th-ranked Cardinals will try to close out their Billy Minardi Classic with a victory over Utah Valley on Wednesday night.

Louisville (10-1) will try to end its string of six consecutive home games with a perfect mark following a 75-47 victory over Missouri-Kansas City in its Classic opener Tuesday. Trey Lewis had 17 points and led five players in double figures in the team's first game without post player Mangok Mathiang, who is out six to eight weeks because of a broken bone in his left foot.

Sophomore 7-footer Anas Mahmoud missed his third straight game because of an ankle injury and coach Rick Pitino said he could return during ACC play, which begins Jan. 3 against Wake Forest. Freshman forward Deng Adel returned after missing eight games due to a sprained knee and is expected to wear a brace for the next two weeks.

"A lot of people just have to step up, especially our bigs. Having Mangok out, he's one of our best bigs and we lose him vocally," said Adel, who started his first two collegiate games. "I think we can definitely fill those roles and learn to communicate. That's one of our biggest weaknesses. Once we figure that out, we should be fine. We should be able to continue to grow until Mangok comes back."

Even with their missing players, the Cardinals have won their past five games by an average of 33.6 points, but that's likely to change beginning this weekend. Louisville will travel to No. 12 Kentucky on Saturday in its final nonconference game.

Utah Valley (5-7) had a three-game win streak snapped with a 102-77 drubbing to North Carolina-Wilmington on Tuesday in Louisville. The Wolverines shot 41.7 percent - 5 of 20 from 3-point range - and were outrebounded 50-32, including an 18-8 disadvantage on the offensive glass.

They averaged 89.0 points on 47.3 percent shooting and connected at 38.3 percent from beyond the arc in their prior three games, including road victories against Idaho State and Texas-San Antonio.

Leading scorer Konner Frey, averaging 15.3 points, was held to six versus the Seahawks after totaling 53 in his previous three games. Senior guard Jaden Jackson had 17 points and is averaging 17.5 on 55.1 percent shooting in his last four contests.

Utah Valley has lost its five games against Top 25 teams by an average of 27.0 points since joining Division I in 2003-04. The Wolverines fell 87-56 at No. 3 Arizona in their only such matchup last season on Dec. 9, 2014, and are facing Louisville for the first time.

The Cardinals are 17-1 all-time in the Classic.

Preview: Aggies (7-5) at Bears (8-2)

Date: December 23, 2015 8:00 PM EDT

Baylor is hopeful it can successfully move on from its latest defeat.

The No. 23 Bears are coming off their worst defensive performance of the season and now face one of the nation's top offensive players when they host Pascal Siakam and New Mexico State on Wednesday night.

Baylor (8-2) also played poorly on offense Saturday after averaging 85.6 points and shooting 48.3 percent during a seven-game winning streak. That ended with an 80-61 loss at then-No. 24 Texas A&M as the Bears were held to season lows for points and field-goal shooting (35.6 percent) while getting outrebounded (45-40) for the first time.

Rather than lament his team's shortcomings, coach Scott Drew praised the Aggies while believing his Bears can use that lopsided result as a foundation to fine-tune their play.

"Win or lose, you learn a lot and can improve a lot," said Drew, whose squad never led and trailed by as many as 29.

Besides the shooting and rebounding issues, Baylor allowed an opponent to score more than 75 points for the first time since February 2014 and gave up a season-worst 47.6 percent shooting.

"At the end of the day I know we'd much rather have this happen now than happen in conference," Drew said. "It's definitely a good learning experience for our team."

Rico Gathers (14.9 points, 11.8 rebounds per game) pulled down 18 boards but was held to a season-low eight points after totaling 51 in the previous two contests. Taurean Prince (14.6 ppg) also had eight points to match a season low and recorded three rebounds after posting 23 in the previous two.

"The biggest thing is to stay together, stay a family," said senior Lester Medford, who had a season-high 16 points with five assists and five steals. "You can't break down now, it's early in the season."

Before opening Big 12 play at second-ranked Kansas on Jan. 2, the Bears have two seemingly favorable matchups in Waco and are riding a 32-game nonconference home winning streak. Included in that run was a 66-55 victory over New Mexico State (7-5) last December.

"We mixed it up well with them for a while," coach Marvin Menzies told the Aggies' official website after the game.

However, that was before Siakam's emergence. The 6-foot-9 sophomore averaged 12.8 points and 7.7 rebounds last season, and had 12 points with four boards at Baylor. He's stepped up this season to rank among the national leaders at 23.4 points and 12.0 rebounds per contest.

The Aggies are 5-1 when he scores at least 24.

Siakam matched a career high with 35 points in Monday's 76-61 home win over Oral Roberts. Two of the three times he's scored a season-low 14 came on the road, including Saturday's 73-53 win at UTEP.

New Mexico State shot 49.0 percent that day after hitting 40.9 percent and averaging 59.3 points in its first three road games - all losses.

The Aggies, who have made four straight trips to the NCAA Tournament, have lost 18 consecutive games against ranked opponents since beating then-No. 15 Nevada in January 2007.

The Bears were unranked for last year's matchup and held to 39.3 percent shooting as Gathers and Prince totaled just 11 points. Gathers, though, had a career-high seven steals as Baylor forced 19 turnovers.

Preview: Sooners (9-0) at Rainbow Warriors (8-1)

Date: December 23, 2015 9:00 PM EDT

The Oklahoma Sooners have thoroughly enjoyed their two stays in Hawaii, and next they get a chance to extend their success there against their gracious hosts.

The third-ranked Sooners seek their third win in Honolulu this month when they meet Hawaii in the semifinal round of the Diamond Head Classic on Wednesday night.

Oklahoma (9-0) has won its last eight games by an average of 26.1 points, including a 78-55 victory over then-No. 9 Villanova in the Dec. 7 Pearl Harbor Classic. The Sooners opened their second trip to Honolulu with Tuesday's easy 88-60 victory over Washington State in the first round of the eight-team tournament, which features no other ranked teams.

Though Oklahoma has played six of its nine games at home, the two trips to Hawaii have made for a wild month.

'We've got to adjust because this is the life we choose and part of it is traveling on the road so we're used to this," senior guard Buddy Hield said. "â?¦ and we've just got to be ready for whatever the task at hand is and come out and play.'

Oklahoma is off to its best start since the Blake Griffin-led 2008-09 team won its first 12 games, and Hield is a major reason why.

The 6-foot-4 guard ranks in the top 10 nationally and leads the Big 12 Conference with 23.7 points per game. He has averaged 29.3 in his last three games, making 12 of 21 3-pointers.

Hield followed back-to-back 30-point performances â?? including a career-high 33 in Saturday's 87-74 win over Creighton - with an efficient 25 points in the tournament opener. In just 26 minutes, Hield made 8 of 13 shots and 5 of 8 from 3-point range against Washington State. He scored 15 points in the first half.

Hield has made 51.8 percent of his 3-point attempts to lead a Sooners team that ranks second in the nation at 47.2 percent from long range. The Sooners have made at least 10 3-pointers in six games and average 10.3.

On the other end of the court, Oklahoma has held its opponents to 26.5 percent shooting from deep. Creighton was the only team to finish at better than 40 percent against the Sooners, but they rebounded by holding Washington State to 5 of 21 from long range.

Oklahoma led just 38-31 at halftime but a 17-0 run early in the second half led to the lopsided victory.

'Defensively, we created some activity and had some deflections that we turned into transition opportunities and I thought we had some pretty good looks defensively in the first half, but we didn't come up with the loose balls and didn't guard through late in the shot clock,' coach Lon Kruger said. 'In the second half we played much better defensively and moved the ball offensively.'

Hawaii (8-1) used its own defensive gem to reach the semifinals, topping Northern Iowa 68-52 later Tuesday. The Rainbow Warriors forced 19 turnovers - upping their total to 64 in the last three games - and finished with 10 steals.

Aaron Valdes led Hawaii with 15 points, while Sai Tummala made 3 of 6 3-pointers for 12 points off the bench. Valdes leads Hawaii at 17.8 points per game.

The Rainbow Warriors won their last two games against top-5 opponents but haven't faced one since beating No. 4 Michigan State 84-62 on Nov. 19, 2005.

Preview: Mustangs (10-0) at Buffaloes (11-1)
Date: December 23, 2015 11:30 PM EDT

Having kept SMU unbeaten in his return to the sidelines, Larry Brown will next try to lead the Mustangs to their best start in school history.

Brown faces one of his former players in Colorado coach Tad Boyle on Wednesday night in the Las Vegas Classic championship game, as No. 18 SMU looks to improve to 11-0 against a Buffaloes team seeking a 12th straight win.

Brown was suspended for nine games and SMU was barred from postseason tournaments this season after the NCAA ruled in September that a former administrative assistant for the program did course work to keep an athlete academically eligible.

Mustangs coach-in-waiting Tim Jankovich led the team until Brown returned for Tuesday's 90-74 victory over Kent State, the team's fifth in a row by double digits. SMU has won those by an average of 34.2 points en route to matching its 10-0 start from 1997-98.

"I was so excited to walk in the dressing room, and more excited seeing the staff and seeing the kids," Brown said. "I told (the players) our goal is to get better in practice and to get better in every game, to represent our conference and school.

"We haven't had any adversity yet. It was so exciting to see what Tim and the staff did."

Nic Moore had 25 points Tuesday, giving him 43 in the past two games. Keith Frazier chipped in 19 points and 10 rebounds while Jordan Tolbert had 18 with 10 boards.

Tolbert is averaging 19.8 points on 63.4 percent shooting and 15.3 rebounds in his last four contests. Fourth in the nation in shooting at 52.9 percent, the Mustangs have hit at least half their shots in five straight.

"Larry Brown is a Hall of Fame coach," Frazier said. "You have no choice but to go out and play your butt off for him. Coach wants me to play as I'm capable of playing."

The Mustangs will likely need another high-powered effort against Colorado, which is off to its best start since 1941-42, when it began 14-0 and eventually went to the Final Four.

The Buffaloes (11-1), who received votes in the latest AP poll, held off Penn State for a 71-70 victory Tuesday, their 11th straight for their longest since taking 12 in a row in 1961-62.

Josh Scott led the way with 18 points, eight rebounds and four blocks. The senior forward is averaging 21.0 points on 63.5 percent shooting in his six games this month.

Boyle played in the first two of Brown's five seasons with the Jayhawks and was team captain as a senior. Colorado has scrimmaged SMU in each of the last four seasons but this matchup will resonate even more.

"He shaped me as a coach, without a doubt," Boyle told the school's official website. "When I think of my basketball philosophy and value system, my core values, it traces back to Larry Brown and Larry Hicks, my high school coach."

Colorado's lone blemish this season came in its only matchup with a ranked team, a 68-62 defeat to then-No. 7 Iowa State on Nov. 13 in South Dakota. The Buffaloes have dropped nine straight games to Top 25 opponents since a 100-91 victory over No. 10 Oregon on Jan. 5, 2014.

Colorado has also shot a combined 36.9 percent in its two neutral-site games this season.

The Buffaloes are facing SMU for the first time since a 70-67 road loss Jan. 5, 2009, and are 4-2 in the all-time series.

Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

-- Oklahoma 84, Hawai'i 81-- Sooners were up 14 early, hung on late- good road win

-- Portland 87, Pepperdine 79-- Pilots are 2-0, tied atop WCC with Gonzaga and St Mary's.

-- Milwaukee 76, Minnesota 64-- Rough pre-conference stretch for the Gophers.

-- Utah State transfer David Collette is going to Utah, which should make tensions between the two schools moreso. Collette quit the Aggies two days before their first game. Poaching players is getting out of hand in college basketball.

-- SMU 70, Colorado 66-- Mustangs are 11-0, but ineligible for postseason.

-- Georgia Southern 58, Bowling Green 27-- First-ever bowl win for the Eagles.

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Movie/TV memorabilia I'd like to have....

Couple days ago, people on Twitter were talking about what pieces of movie memorabilia they'd like to have- I expanded my list to include TV.........

13) Rocky Balboa's boxing gloves-- The original Rocky is one of the greatest movies ever; the sequels made a lot of money and helped launch the WWE craze, but other than the last fight scene in Rocky II, they can't touch the original.

12) The hat Ted Knight bought in the pro shop in Caddyshack-- You know the one, when Rodney Dangerfield asks, "You get a bowl of soup with that hat?"

11) The shiny jacket Steve Martin wore as a huckster preacher in Leap of Faith; he leaves in on the hotel bed for Debra Winger at the end of the movie.

10) The racing program Richard Dreyfuss used in Let It Ride, the classic comedy about a degenerate gambler having a very good day at the racetrack.

9) Miami Sharks football helmet from Any Given Sunday-- Al Pacino coaches a team with Dennis Quaid, at QB, Lawrence Taylor at LB; Jim Brown was an assistant.

8) The Cross of Lorraine ring Magnum, TC and Rick wore in Magnum PI; it is a symbol thought to be first used by Joan of Arc.

7) Poker chips that were used in Teddy G's poker club in Rounders.

6) Hamilton Mustangs' jersey from the Rob Lowe/Patrick Swayze hockey movie, Youngblood. Thats the movie where the coach says in between periods of a road game, "I didn't come halfway to the (bleep)ing Arctic Circle to lose to these goons!!!!"

5) Eddie Albert's pitchfork from the great 60's comedy, Green Acres.

4) Henry Steele's high school letter jacket from 1977 basketball movie One on One, which was filmed in the gym that Colorado State still plays in.

3) The Batphone, the red phone Commissioner Gordon used to call stately Wayne Manor when he needed crimefighting help from Batman, which was every week. The commish was so clueless he didn't recognize that Batgirl was his own daughter.

2) Oscar Madison's typewriter from The Odd Couple; yes kids, there was a day that if you made a mistake typing, you had to use whiteout to correct the mistake.

1) The basketball Bob Cousy shot free throws with in his scene with Nick Nolte in Blue Chips; Cousy doesn't miss in the dimly-lit gym, most of the dialogue between them in that scene was ad-libbed and the scene was shot in one take.

Preview: Crimson (5-6) at Sooners (10-0)
Date: December 25, 2015 8:30 PM EDT

Unbeaten Oklahoma is coming off its closest game yet, and another could be on the way with Harvard coming around after a tough start to the season.

The third-ranked Sooners meet the Crimson in the Diamond Head Classic title game Friday night in Honolulu hoping to extend their best start since 2008-09.

After an 84-81 semifinal win over Hawaii on Wednesday, the Sooners are 10-0 for the first time since winning their first 12 games seven seasons ago. It was their first game decided by single digits since opening with an 84-78 win at Memphis on Nov. 17.

"It was actually a really tough game," said Sooners forward Khadeem Lattin, who had a career-high 17 points with eight rebounds.

"Their guys were good, you've got to give it up to them. We just had to come out and really just play as hard as we could. They made shots and so we just had to always bounce back and it took us a while to become the aggressor."

Oklahoma's not really used to its opposition making too many shots, limiting teams to a 35.3 percent and 27.2 from 3-point range. Hawaii was the first team to score 80 points against Lon Kruger's team, and the 45.5 percent shooting mark was also a season high.

But no one has been able to put together a strong offensive game against the Sooners while also limiting their outside shooting. Oklahoma was 8 of 17 from 3-point range and is hitting 47.2 percent for the season, which ranks second in the nation and is 5.8 percent higher than the 1986-87 team's best mark in school history.

Top scorer Buddy Hield has led that with a 52.3 percent season mark and did it again in the semis, hitting 5 of 9 and finishing with 27 points. The senior has been especially impressive in the last four game with 28.8 points and a 17-of-30 mark from long range.

Harvard (5-6) reached the finals with Wednesday's 69-51 win over Auburn. The Crimson got off to a 2-6 start, but that sixth loss - a 75-69 defeat at then-No. 4 Kansas on Dec. 5 - seemed to wake them up. They're unbeaten since with a win at Boston before opening the tournament with an 85-82 overtime victory over BYU on Tuesday.

The win over Auburn came in large part because of an impressive defensive effort, limiting the Tigers to 30.2 percent and 6 of 25 from 3-point range.

"Our calling card has been our defense," said coach Tommy Amaker, whose team has held opponents to 38.3 percent and 27.3 from long range. "I'm so proud of our guys for how they've been able to embrace that and believe in that."

Harvard has also been consistent offensively on the winning streak, shooting 47.4 percent and an Oklahoma-like 46.8 from 3-point range. That's up from 36.5 percent in its first eight games.

Starters Zena Edosomwan (15.0), Corey Johnson (14.7), Agunwa Okolie (12.3) and Evan Cummins (10.3) have all been above their season scoring averages on the winning streak.

The Crimson got off to a fast start with a 17-4 lead, and Amaker seems to know how to get his team ready for a tournament environment. They're 8-0 in in-season tournament games under Amaker, who's also had them in the NCAA Tournament the past four seasons.

"We were ready to go and certainly in a tournament atmosphere like this, where you've playing games on consecutive days, that's critical to get off to a great start and I think our defense has been able to help us with that and we've been very confident as we've been in this tournament thus far," Amaker said.

Harvard has lost its last four against ranked opponents, but three have been single-digit defeats. Oklahoma has won 15 straight against unranked foes.

Preview: Cardinals (11-1) at Wildcats (9-3)
Date: December 26, 2015 12:00 PM EDT

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) Identity-building seems more important right now for No. 12 Kentucky and 16th-ranked archrival Louisville than claiming Bluegrass bragging rights.

The winner of Saturday's annual showdown at Rupp Arena can take a big step in that process, along with giving their fan base something to feel good about entering conference play.

The talented and young Wildcats (9-2), replacing seven players who turned pro after last season, are still finding their way after opening No. 2 in the Top 25. They face an 11-1 Louisville squad with something to prove as well, and Kentucky junior guard Dominique Hawkins believes that beating another quality opponent provides more motivation than the rivalry.

'We know that they're a great pressing team and I'm pretty sure that's what we're going to prepare for,' the Richmond, Kentucky, native said of the Cardinals. 'It's just another game and we're just looking to win.'

While that may be underplaying it a little, if the Wildcats are going to come away with a victory, they'll have to beat a Cardinals team that might be even hungrier than Ohio State. The Buckeyes were unfazed by Kentucky's height and hype in their 74-67 win last week in Brooklyn, New York. Ohio State led throughout and withstood a second-half rally led by Jamal Murray's 33-point explosion.

Impressive as Murray's game was, Kentucky coach John Calipari seeks more offensive contributions. A presence in the middle will be needed on both ends against the quick, physical Cardinals.

As Kentucky works to establish continuity, its inside game could be helped this weekend with the recent addition of 6-foot-10, 255-pound forward Tai Wynyard from New Zealand. He has only had a couple of workouts and Calipari has been coy about whether he'll play Saturday because he's a work in progress - much like the Wildcats.

'We've got things that we've got to do,' Calipari said. 'We're still tweaking offensively exactly how we have to play. I saw some good stuff in the second half of that game (Ohio State). But, we're a ways away.'

Louisville began the season unranked with a made-over roster of youngsters as well, but has quickly grown into a group looking to be competitive in the Atlantic Coast Conference and beyond.

The Cardinals enter the game leading the nation in scoring margin at plus-30.2 points per game and ranked sixth in field goal percentage (.519). Granted, their opponents have not all been the caliber of top-ranked Michigan State, but Louisville led that game on the road before the Spartans rallied in the final minutes for a 71-67 win.

But Louisville's lopsided victories have provided young players valuable playing time and helped the Cardinals' offense blossom enough to shoot above 50 percent nine times this year, one more than last season.

'Our confidence is pretty high,' said Louisville coach Rick Pitino, comparing his team's docket to the alternative of a tougher schedule with such a young team.

Graduate transfers Damion Lee (17.3) and Trey Lewis have combined for nearly 32 points per game in the backcourt with sophomore guard Quentin Snider averaging 10 points. They'll face Kentucky's three-guard backcourt of Murray, Isaiah Briscoe and Tyler Ulis.

The game is a chance for Louisville to earn a signature win, against its biggest rival at that. The Cardinals also seek their first win at Rupp since 2008 and aim to end a three-game slide in a series Kentucky leads 33-15.

Though many of the young Cardinals may not fully grasp the magnitude of the rivalry, their fans have certainly reminded them of what beating Kentucky means to them. Players just hope it can provide something that helps down the road.

'We know how bad our campus wants this, how bad our fans want this game,' said Lewis, who's averaging 14.7 points per game. 'We're going into this as some very tough competition (entering) the next stretch, so we don't feed too much into the hype. But we know what this game means.'
