Game of the day: Cavaliers at Warriors

Jun 13, 2015

Cleveland Cavaliers at Golden State Warriors (-8.5,195.5)

Series tied 2-2

The injury-riddled Cleveland Cavaliers may have to dig into their bench for reinforcements when they face the host Golden State Warriors in Sunday's Game 5 of the NBA Finals. The losses of forward Kevin Love (shoulder) and point guard Kyrie Irving (knee) have left Cleveland short-handed but the series is tied at two games apiece after Golden State emerged victorious with a 103-82 rout in Game 4.

Cavaliers coach David Blatt has been reluctant to play more than seven or eight players but star forward LeBron James not-so-subtly hinted that veterans such as Mike Miller (14 minutes in the series) and Shawn Marion (no action) need to see playing time so the starters can get more rest. "That's the coach's decision if he decides he wants to go deeper in the bench," James said at a press conference. "We haven't played many guys throughout this playoff run. I think it would help some of the guys that are playing some high minutes for sure -- just give guys a couple minutes here, a couple minutes there." One of the more valuable players in the series is Golden State guard Andre Iguodala, who started for the first time all season in Game 4 and had 22 points while holding James to a series-low 20. "You understand how hard it really is just to win a game, and you take it one game at a time," Iguodala told reporters. "The flow has changed. You make so many adjustments, your mind's just always locked in on a task and you learn how mentally strong you have to be in order to just win a game and not just a series."

TV: 8 p.m. ET, ABC

LINE HISTORY: Online books opened the lines at GS -8.5, 195.5 after Game 4, which has yet to move.

INJURY REPORT: Cavaliers - F LeBron James (Prob-Head), G Kyrie Irving (Out-Knee) Warriors - N/A

WHAT BOOKS SAY: "As expected, the bettors love LeBron in this situation. And can you blame them? Just as Game 4 was a must-win scenario for Golden State, the table has turned and now Cleveland is in the same situation. The chess game will go back and forth between the coaching staffs, but this is really going to come down to how much King James has left in the tank." John Lester, BookMaker.eu

ABOUT THE CAVALIERS: James is averaging 35.8 points in the series despite a miserable 7-for-22 shooting effort in Game 4 that drops his series percentage to 38.8. Guards Matthew Dellavedova (3-of-14), J.R. Smith (2-of-12) and Iman Shumpert (2-of-9) all had dismal shooting performances in Game 4 with Smith missing all eight 3-point attempts as Cleveland was 4-of-27 from behind the arc. "We don't have many options as far as lineups we can to go, but we can make adjustments," James said. "That's what you do throughout a series."

ABOUT THE WARRIORS: Iguodala's surprise start moved center Andrew Bogut to the bench and Bogut played just three minutes while forward David Lee remained part of the rotation after providing a spark in Game 3. But outside of Iguodala's contributions, the best sight for Golden State was seeing point guard Stephen Curry shoot 4-of-7 from 3-point range and the league MVP has scored 39 points over the last five quarters. "Obviously, you never lose your confidence," Curry said at his press conference. "You understand there is a lot of series left, and a lot of opportunity to turn it around."

TRENDS:

*Cavaliers are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games following a double-digit loss at home.
*Warriors are 4-9 ATS in their last 13 home games.
*Under is 6-1 in Cavaliers last 7 vs. a team with a winning S.U. record.
*Under is 13-3 in Warriors last 16 overall.

COVERS CONSENSUS: 61.82 percent of the consensus is on the Cavs +8.5 with 59.4 percent on the over.

Warriors expect better play at home

June 14, 2015

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - When the NBA returned to a 2-2-1-1-1 format for the NBA Finals, it swung the advantage in Game 5 back to the higher-seeded team.

Under the system that was used for about three decades, the middle three games were hosted by the team with the worse record. Had that not been changed before the 2013-14 season, Sunday's game would have been in Cleveland.

Critics of the 2-3-2 format argued that Game 5, often a pivotal game when the series is tied, should be a home game for the team with the better record.

Now the Golden State Warriors have it, and know they need to capitalize on it.

After going 39-2 at home in the regular season, they have lost twice at Oracle Arena in the postseason, including Game 2 of this series. They didn't play well in Game 1, either.

''But I think we're going to be really composed, really aggressive,'' Warriors guard Stephen Curry said. ''We're going to feed off our crowd's energy tomorrow, which we're going to need because that's why you play so hard during the regular season, to have home-court advantage, to be able to capitalize off of that in situations like these.''

The team that won Game 5 of the finals when the series was tied 2-2 won the title 20 of 28 times.

''I think it's going to be a big momentum swing, whoever wins Game 5. That is pretty obvious with the series being 2-2,'' Warriors forward David Lee said. ''But we're not really worried about the result as much as we've got to come out and play the way we played in Game 4, and that is play Warriors basketball.''

Here are some things to watch Sunday:

STAYING SMALL?: Steve Kerr wouldn't reveal whether he would stick with the lineup he used for Game 4, with Andre Iguodala in and center Andrew Bogut going to the bench.

The smaller lineup helped speed up the tempo and the Warriors had their best performance of the series in their 103-82 victory. Yet, they also won 67 games in the regular season with a conventional lineup, so either option could work.

''Obviously we won Game 1 with our normal lineup. We've had a great season with our normal lineup,'' forward Harrison Barnes said. ''So it's something we went through last (game) to get our offense going. So whether we stick with it or go back to the old one, we'll see.''

LOOKING TO LEBRON: Held to 20 points in Game 4 after averaging more than 40 for the first three, LeBron James won't go out searching for a certain number of shots or points, and coach David Blatt said the Cavaliers don't want him feeling he has to.

''For me, from the perception, it's a lose-lose when it comes to, `OK, well, in the first three games I score 40, but I shoot a lot of shots. Last game I scored 20, I don't shoot as many shots, and we lose.' So it's like, what do you want?'' James said.

''So for me, that's not my thought process. I don't really care about it. All I care about is how I can produce for our team.''

FEELING GREAT, MATE: The extra day of rest between Games 4 and 5 benefited all the players, but was perhaps most important for Matthew Dellavedova. The Australian point guard needed treatment for dehydration after his brilliant Game 3 performance and didn't look recovered Thursday, struggling to 10 points on 3-of-14 shooting.

''I'm feeling great,'' he said Saturday. ''I'm feeling a lot better and really ready to go for Game 5.''

NOWHERE TO GO BUT UP: J.R. Smith missed all eight 3-pointers in a 2-for-12 performance in Game 4. At least he knows things can only improve.

''It's one game, so the best part about it, I can't play no worse,'' he said.

He certainly has to play better. The former Sixth Man of the Year is shooting just 29.8 percent from the field in the finals.

Making shots; it is that simple; Warriors are 22-57 from arc in their two series wins, s 20-69 in two lossess. Golden State was 19-27 from line in last game, after going just 7-12 in Game 3. Cleveland attacks hoop more with Irving gone; they are 65-92 on foul line in last three games (13-19 in Game 1). Warriors played well once they started playing with sense of desperation; can they play that way at home? Cleveland was 4-27 from arc in last game- they were 27-89 in first three games.

Golden State won nine of its last 13 games with Cleveland; ten of the 13 games were decided by 8+ points. Cavaliers are 14-4 so far in playoffs, Warriors are 14-5. 11 of last 14 Golden State games stayed under the total, including last three. Six of last seven series games stayed under the total. Golden State needs a faster-paced game to succeed in this series.

Game 5 of the NBA Finals is a turning point for totals betting
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After three straight Under finishes (and a Game 1 that would have stayed below the betting total if not for overtime) between the Golden State Warriors and Cleveland Cavaliers, logic says play the Under for Game 5 of the NBA Finals Sunday. History says something different.

Over the past nine NBA Finals, Game 5 has been a turning point in totals betting with a 5-3 Over/Under record since 2006.

The first four games of the championship series have produced a combined 12-25-3 Over/Under (67.5 percent Under) mark - including a 1-3 O/U count this postseason – in that span, with a collective 20-32-3 Over/Under (61.5 percent Under) in the finals overall. And Game 4 has been a consistent Under winner, playing below the total in eight of the past 10 years when including Thursday’s result.

Oddsmakers have set the total for Game 5 in Oracle Arena at 195.5 points - a half point higher than the Game 4 number closed. Books opened Thursday’s total as low as 192.5 before one-sided money on the Over pushed that total upwards.

Game 5 NBA Finals situations have had an average betting total of 191.31 points over the last nine seasons, with the teams combining for an average of 202 points, trumping the Over/Under by 10.69 points in that span.

That scoring surge in Game 5's is a massive jump in production when compared to the scoring in the first four games of the NBA Finals, with teams averaging 185.75 points against an average total of 191.2 from 2006 to 2014.

For the entire playoffs (Round 1 to NBA Finals), Game 5 situations have produced a 63-59 Over/Under count (51.6 percent Over) since 2006, including a 5-3 O/U record in the 2015 NBA Playoffs.

If you’re sizing up the Over for Game 5 Thursday, you may want to pull the trigger sooner than later. Sportsbooks online and in Nevada have all reported one-sided action on the Over in all four games of the NBA Finals, and expect that lean to be even more with the high-scoring Warriors returning home.

Golden State is 1-8-1 Over/Under at home in the playoffs, averaging 100.6 points per game in Oakland – compared to 113.3 points per home game in the regular season. Cleveland is 2-7 O/U on the road in the postseason, scoring 96.2 points per road game after averaging 102.8 points away from Quicken Loans Arena in the regular season.

Under bets hot with NBA Finals heading to Game 5

The Under has gone 3-0 in the past three games in the NBA Finals heading into Game 5 and has a record of 3-1 overall in the series between the Cleveland Cavaliers and Golden State Warriors.

The series opened with a total of 203.5 in Game 1 and it took overtime for the teams to eclipse the closing number. The number has come down in each game since with Game 2 at 199 and games 3 and 4 at 194.5.

Oddsmakers opened the total for Game 5 at 195.5 and it has yet to budge as of Sunday morning. Through four games, the two teams are averaging a combined 192 points scored per game.

This has been a hot trend in early WNBA season

Under wagers have registered an 11-6-1 record through the first 18 games of the WNBA season, good enough to cash at a rate of just under 65 percent.

The season is barely over a week old, but the Washington Mystics (0-3 Over/Under), Connecticut Sun (0-3 O/U) and San Antonio Stars (0-2) have remained perfect for Under bettors.

The Los Angeles Sparks have played just one game thus far, which resulted in a push on the total.

Sunday is a busy day on the WNBA calendar, with six games on the board.

WNBA Betting Recap - 6/5-6/7

June 7, 2015

League Betting Notes (from Friday, June 5 through Sunday, June 7)

-- Favorites went 8-2 straight up
-- Underdogs went 5-4-1 against the spread (ATS)
-- Home teams posted a 7-3 SU record
-- Home teams posted a 5-4-1 ATS record
-- The 'under' went 6-4

Team Betting Notes

-- The first week for Atlanta (0-2) has been a nightmare, not a dream. They have dropped two games straight up despite being favored by 6 1/2 or more points, including a win by Connecticut (1-1) Sunday despite the Sun coming in as an 11 1/2-point underdog. The Sun are the biggest moneyline winner to date at +550, and Connecticut is 2-0 ATS.

-- Minnesota (2-0) followed up an opening night win Friday against Tulsa (1-1) by winning at Indiana (0-2) Saturday night. The Lynx are 1-1 ATS, but the 'under' has come through in each of their games to date.

-- Washington (2-0) has won each of their games, but they have failed to cover in each. Like Minnesota, the 'under' is also 2-0 in both games for the Mystics. Washington hosts reeling Atlanta Friday night in D.C.

-- New York (1-1) split their weekend games, stunning Atlanta in the opener before getting tripped up in D.C. The Liberty have been a bettors friend early by covering each game.

-- The Shock split their first two games straight-up, but they're 2-0 ATS so far, including a high-scoring 101-93 win over Chicago (1-1) Saturday night in Oklahoma.

-- The 'over' has been the play for Elena Delle Donne and the Sky through two games, cashing both times. The Sky lead the WNBA by averaging 94.0 points per game through two games. Unfortunately, the Sky also rank second-to-last in defense by allowing 86.5 points per game.

-- The Fever have dropped each of their first two games, and they're 0-2 ATS. They will travel to New York Tuesday to face a Liberty team that is 2-0 ATS on the young season.

Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

ESPN's top six preseason college football teams.........

6) Baylor-- New QB, but whole offensive line is back.

5) USC-- Senior QB, seven starters back on defense.

4) Auburn-- How good a quarterback is Jeremy Johnson?

3) Oregon-- Transfer QB Vernon Adams plays his old team in the opener.

2) TCU-- Ten starters back on offense, all with chips on their shoulders.

1) Ohio State-- Their 3rd-string QB would start on most other teams.

**********

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday........

13) Boston Red Sox' last 3.5 seasons.........
-- 2012-- 69-93, 26 games out of first place
-- 2013-- 97-65, won World Series
-- 2014-- 71-91, 25 games out of first place
-- 2015-- 27-35, seven games out of first place.

They have very little quality pitching; how will they get better?

12) Toronto has won ten games in a row, is charging towards the top of the AL East; my question is this: How the hell was this collection of hitters ever 23-30?

11) How come no one has the onions to say the Bronx Bombers are better off this year with ARod, than they were last year, with a washed-up Derek Jeter?

10) ARod will get to 3,000 hits soon; he got over 2,000 RBI yesterday; his teammates seem to like him and he is still a productive player, but Ken Rosenthal hinted on FOX yesterday that no one wants him in the All-Star Game next month. Why?

9) Hey, if Ollie from Hoosiers can shoot his free throws underhanded, how come Dwight Howard or DeAndre Jordan haven't tried it yet? Rick Barry was one of the greatest foul shooters ever-- he shot underhanded.

8) There is an actor named Kevin Dunn who played a front office guy with the Twins in the underrated 1994 movie Little Big League. 20 years later, he played an assistant for the Cleveland Browns in Draft Day. Mr Dunn plays Ben Caffrey in the TV series Veep-- he's appeared in over 100 movies/TV shows.

7) Streaky San Francisco Giants lost their last seven home games.

6) Big Ten Network runs a very fine reality show during football/basketball season that gives you a (slightly) behind the scenes look at the people who play and coach these teams. I've been watching several of them in a row as I write this. Lot of good stories.

5) Wisconsin had another terrific football team last year; coach Anderson was seen in a few shots, telling the kids how much he enjoyed coaching them, yet he quit after they lost 59-0 to Ohio State in the Big 14 title game and is now at Oregon State. I am guessing we won't see the meetings that led to Anderson quitting his job.

4) Ted Ginn Sr is a high school coach in Cleveland, I think; his son still plays in the NFL. They showed him on this show and he has a fairly large pendant around his neck that says "SR" as in Ted Ginn Jr's father. Kind of cool.

3) Junior college football is really good; I remember seeing a Santa Monica-West LA JC game in 1990, on a cruddy field with about 200 fans watching on a beautiful day in LA. Five years later, watching Isaac Bruce play for the Rams, I realized that he played in that game in 1990-- thats how good JC football is in some places.

2) A school named East Mississippi won three of the last four JC national titles; the nearest Wal-Mart is 35 miles from campus but Jim Kelly's nephew played there last year and now he plays for Ole Miss. Would enjoy seeing those games on TV.

1) A's lost 1-0 in Anaheim last night; rooting for the 2015 A's is like rooting for the criminals in Law and Order; it is promising for a while but at the end, most nights it is just very disappointing.

Armadillo's Write-Up

Sunday, June 14
