Monday's Tip Sheet
May 25, 2015
Who’s Hot:
Indians – Cleveland was languishing in last place of the AL Central earlier this month, but the Tribe has come back to life with six consecutive victories. The Indians pulled off a home sweep this past weekend of the rival Reds, while holding Cincinnati to just six runs in the three victories. In the last seven games overall, Cleveland’s pitching has allowed just 14 runs, resulting in six ‘unders.’
Cleveland sends out veteran Shaun Marcum this afternoon to begin its series against another streaking team with Texas headed to Progressive Field. Marcum captured a victory in his Indians’ debut last week against the White Sox, scattering four hits and allowing two earned runs in 6.2 innings of a 4-3 underdog win. The Indians have struggled in home series openers this season, posting a 1-6 mark with the only victory coming this past Friday against the Reds.
Rangers – Texas wasn’t expected to do much in the AL West this season, but the Rangers are suddenly making a move on their current road trip. The Rangers lost the opener of their previous series at Boston, but then proceeded to beat the Red Sox twice and followed it up with a three-game sweep of the Yankees in the Bronx. Texas’ offense woke up in New York, plating 30 runs in the three victories, while not losing a road series in the past four tries.
Josh Hamilton will make his Rangers’ debut this afternoon after getting traded back to Texas from Los Angeles last month. That will obviously be a key storyline, but Rangers’ righty Phil Klein takes the mound for his second career start today, but his first back in his home state of Ohio. The former Youngstown State standout allowed five hits and one earned run at Boston his last time out to cash as a +150 underdog in a 2-1 victory at Fenway Park.
Who’s Not:
Yankees – Are the Bronx Bombers showing their age right now? New York has dropped six straight games, including an ugly three-game sweep at home to Texas this past weekend. The Yankees have managed to stay in second place of the AL East behind Tampa Bay in spite of this skid, while allowing at least five runs in five of the six defeats. New York begins a three-game set with Kansas City, as the Yankees lost two of three to the Royals 10 days ago on the road.
Nathan Eovaldi has failed to win in his last two appearances for the Yankees, both on the road. New York blew a 6-2 lead in his previous start at Washington, an extra-innings loss as Eovaldi gave up five earned runs in less than five innings. The Yankees have won each of Eovaldi’s last two starts at home, while New York has won three of its past four home series openers.
Reds – Eight games ago, Cincinnati barely stood above the .500 mark. Eight losses later, the Reds are scuffling, while coming off a three-game sweep to the dreaded Indians on the road. The offense is nowhere to be find, as the Reds have scored two runs or less in six of the eight losses, while Cincinnati’s starting pitchers have lasted past the fifth inning twice in this stretch.
Cincinnati hosts Colorado this afternoon, as veteran right-hander Jason Marquis looks to stop the bleeding. Marquis has dropped three straight starts, while allowing 15 earned runs in this span. The only positive for Marquis is the Reds are 2-1 in his three starts at the Great American Ballpark, facing a Rockies’ team that is 2-9 in their last 11 road contests.
May Pitchers Report
Lincecum, Tim - 6-12 (4-8 H) - The two-time Cy Young winner has lost five MPH on his fastball and breaking pitches since 2011, which is precisely why he’s not the same pitcher he used to be. Unfortunately, getting your haircut does not make you throw harder.
Lohse, Kyle - 5-11 (3-7 A) - Lohse is more of a feel pitcher and past May’s have shown he has not felt well. It has been even worse this season to date with gargantuan 7.28 ERA to start this month. Rest assured, playing for this Milwaukee bunch will not lead to more success.
