Brewers' Gennett returns after month-long demotion

MILWAUKEE -- Craig Counsell saw enough and Scooter Gennett did enough, so the latter returned Thursday to the former's starting lineup Thursday after Gennett was recalled from Triple-A Colorado Springs.

After splitting time with Rickie Weeks last season, Gennett began the year as the Milwaukee Brewers' full-time starting second baseman. However, he got off to an abysmal start and was batting .207 with a .303 on-base percentage when he sustained a lacerated hand April 19 in Pittsburgh.

Gennett spent 15 days on the disabled list but went 4-for-36 (.111) in his next 11 games. He then was sent to Colorado Springs to regain his offensive stroke as well as sharpen up his defense.

"The game usually tells you what you need to work on, and when you have an opportunity to do that every day and work on what you need to, you figure things out," Gennett said. "I definitely feel confident now that everything's back to where it usually is, where needs to be, so I'm just excited to get things started."

With Gennett down on the farm, Milwaukee got a sampling of other options at the position, but Hector Gomez, Elian Herrera and Luis Sardinas all failed to produce, and Hernan Perez is 1-for-15 since Milwaukee claimed him off waivers from Detroit on June 2.

Gennett, meanwhile, got into a groove. Taking advantage of the thin air in Colorado Springs, he went 23-for-79 with seven doubles, two home runs and 11 RBIs in 17 games.

"Scooter has played well down there," said Counsell, Milwaukee's manager. "The reports are that he's played well. That's number one. He's done what we've asked him to do. Number two, we need production out of second base. We just do. He's done it. We're hopeful he can get it rolling like he had it last year and '13 as well."

Gennett's return paid off big for the Brewers: He ripped a two-out single down the left field line in the eighth inning, driving in the go-ahead run as the Brewers rallied to beat the Washington Nationals 6-5.

"It's awesome, man," Gennett said. "Whenever you can step up and help the team win, it's always a good thing. It just helps the confidence out even more when it comes to getting the job done and making something happen. It's always a great thing."

Nationals 1B Zimmerman heads to DL

Jun 12, 2015

MILWAUKEE -- The Washington Nationals hope some time off will help first baseman Ryan Zimmerman get back to being his old self again.

Zimmerman was placed on the 15-day disabled list Thursday with plantar fasciitis, a condition that has bothered him all season and is a contributing factor to his lackluster offensive play.

"It's pretty typical plantar fasciitis," manager Matt Williams said Thursday before the Nationals lost 6-5 to the Milwaukee Brewers. "It's not getting any better. Over the last three or four games, it's just really bothering him."

Zimmerman, 30, has 12 doubles, five home runs and 34 RBIs in 56 games but is batting just .209 with a .265 on-base percentage and is last among qualifiers at his position with a .611 on-base-plus-slugging percentage.

"Right now, it's total rest," Williams said, "so he'll get off of it for a few days and not push it too hard. Let it calm down. Hopefully in 15 (days), he's ready to go. Generally, when it's gone, it's gone."

With Zimmerman sidelined, Williams turned to Clint Robinson to man first base, and Robinson hit his first career homer Thursday. The Nationals also could use Tyler Moore or Danny Espinosa at first until Zimmerman returns.

Washington filled Zimmerman's roster spot with outfielder Matt van Dekker, who was acquired from the Mets on March 30 and has appeared in four games for the Nationals this season, going 0-for-2. He hit .234 while playing 47 games for Triple-A Syracuse.

Rays add bullpen help at expense of 2nd catcher

Jun 11, 2015

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- With the bullpen taxed for 11 1/3 innings in a span of three games, the Tampa Bay Rays called for reinforcements.

Three pitchers were promoted from Triple-A Durham after Tampa Bay's 6-2 loss to the Los Angeles Angels on Thursday.

The Rays had to use five relievers a total of 3 2/3 innings Thursday, this after getting four scoreless innings from the bullpen the night before and 3 2/3 innings Tuesday. As a result, left-handers Enny Romero and C.J. Riefenhauser will join the Rays, who also called up right-hander Matt Andriese for an emergency start Friday in the series opener against the Chicago White Sox.

"You'll have some rough games throughout the season," said reliever Kevin Jepsen, who took the loss Thursday, allowing two runs in the seventh inning. "We play so many games. It's tough for us because (starter Alex) Colome pitched such a great game. ... It's a tough loss, but we'll get right back there tomorrow."

To make room for the pitching changes, the Rays placed right-hander Andrew Bellatti on the disabled list due to right shoulder tendinitis, and they optioned right-hander Preston Guilmet, who threw two innings of two-run ball Thursday, one day after he was called up from Durham. The bigger blow was designating Bobby Wilson, the team's 32-year-old backup catcher, for assignment.

"I understand it's part of the game," said Wilson, who hit just .145 with four total RBIs in 24 games. "You kind of wish it doesn't happen to you, but it did. I'm just grateful for the opportunity that they gave me here."

Manager Kevin Cash will go with one catcher, Rene Rivera, for the short term, with versatile Jake Elmore as an emergency backup.

"It's extremely difficult, what Bobby was to our team, our clubhouse and our pitching staff," Cash said. "He's a big part of why we're having so much success from a pitching standpoint."

Orioles' Gonzalez lands on DL with groin ailment

Jun 11, 2015

BALTIMORE -- With right-hander Miguel Gonzalez not progressing from a strained right groin, the Baltimore Orioles place him on the 15-day disabled list Thursday and brought up right-hander Mike Wright from Triple-A Norfolk.

The Gonzalez move is retroactive to June 10, and it leaves a hole in the rotation for Sunday's game against the New York Yankees. Manager Buck Showalter and Wright both said that Wright would be in the bullpen through Saturday, and then they will see what's up for Sunday.

"We're going to do what we can do to win this game tonight," Showalter said Thursday before the Orioles beat the Boston Red Sox 6-5 without utilizing Wright. "Then tomorrow, when we play another team, we're going to do whatever it takes to try to win that game, and when the smoke clears, we have three options that we can use for Sunday, and we'll decide then."

Normally, Wright would not be eligible to pitch for the Orioles until Monday because a player can't come back and play for the major league team that sent him back to the minors for 10 days, and he was demoted June 5.

Wright's situation is different because he is replacing an injured player, and therefore he can return sooner. The 25-year old rookie is 2-1 with a 2.96 ERA in four starts with the Orioles this year.

"I was hoping it was going to happen, but it's always good news to know you're coming back," Wright said. "I didn't want anyone to get hurt, especially Miguel. I like Miguel. I don't want anyone to get hurt, obviously, but it's nice to be up here."

Gonzalez sustained a similar groin injury in 2012 but didn't have to go on the disabled list. It didn't work out that way this time.

"(I'm) a little bummed; I understand that it is the right thing to do," Gonzalez said. "It's not feeling any better. It's still sore. We will just go from there and see what happens. Just take our time and hopefully be ready in two weeks."

Zimmermann's ridiculous numbers against the Brewers

Jordan Zimmermann has certainly enjoyed going home and facing the Milwaukee Brewers. The Wisconsin-born pitcher has been lights-out against the Brew Crew posting a career record of 4-0 with a 2.35 ERA.

Those numbers get even more impressive when you look at the veterans' performances in Miller Park with a 2-0 record and a staggering 1.50 ERA.

The current Brewers lineup has a slash line of .234/.287/.351 in their combined careers against Zimmermann, including six regular contributors for Milwaukee never recording a hit against the right-hander.

The Nationals have been picking up wins when Zimmermann's starts, going 6-2 in the past eight games when he takes the bump.

Washington is currently +104 when they travel to Miller Park and challenge the Brewers Friday.

Over bettors cannot get enough of the Phillies

The Philadelphia Phillies have been participating in a lot of high-scoring games as of late, and Over bettors are cashing in as a result.

The Over has gone 8-1 in the Phils' last nine games. Kevin Correia gets the nod when the Pittsburgh Pirates welcome Philly to PNC Park Friday. Jeff Locke is slated to start for the Bucs.

Oddsmakers opened the game with an 8.5 run total which has held firm as of this writing.
