Monday’s 6-pack:

College football spreads for games August 26
— Navy vs Notre Dame (-20)
— UTEP (-1) @ Jacksonville State
— UMass @ New Mexico State (-8)
— Ohio U @ San Diego State (-3)
— Hawai’i @ Vanderbilt (-18)
— San Jose State @ USC (-30)
— FIU @ Louisiana Tech (-10.5)

Quote of the Day
“In basketball — as in life — true joy comes from being fully present in each and every moment, not just when things are going your way. ”
Phil Jackson

Monday’s quiz
Russell Wilson finished his college football career at Wisconsin; where did he start it?

Sunday’s quiz
Pete Carroll was coach of the Patriots before Bill Belichick.

Saturday’s quiz
Terry Collins was manager of the Mets, last time they were in the World Series.

**********************************************************

Monday’s Den: Wrapping up a summer Sunday

— Early leader for NFL’s Bad Beat of the Year:

Chiefs led the Saints 24-23 with about 1:10 left in New Orleans Sunday; KC had ball 3rd and 8 in their own territory, Saints had no timeouts left.

You run the ball, let the play clock run down, then punt with about 0:25 left, leaving the Saints with almost no time to score. That is what you’re supposed to do.

Chiefs have their 4th string QB in the game; he tries a swing pass, which is picked off, and the Saints are already in field goal range, a horrific beat for anyone who bet on the Chiefs, a gift from the heavens for anyone who bet on New Orleans.

Orioles 5, Mariners 3 (10)— Cedric Mullins didn’t come into this game until the 6th inning, but he was the star; he made a GREAT catch to rob Seattle of a home run in the 9th inning, then hit the game-winning home run in the 10th— it was his first hit since coming off the IL.

Mets 7, Braves 6— On June 1, 2022, the Mets led Atlanta by 10 games in the NL East; in the 228 games since then, Braves have gained 33 games on New York, though they gave one back here. Rafael Ortega went 3-4, with two runs scored, two RBI.

— There are nine guys in the major leagues who have played in all their team’s games this year; four of those nine guys are on Atlanta— Acuna, Albies, Olson, Riley.

— Shohei Ohtani is skipping his next scheduled start on the mound, after he told manager Phil Nevin he was feeling some arm fatigue. He is still expected to hit every day.

Marlins 8, New York 7— Miami scored 5 runs in the bottom of the 9th.
Nationals 8, A’s 7— Washington scored 6 runs in the bottom of the 9th.

This is the first time EVER that two teams blew leads of 4+ runs in the 9th inning and lost on the same day, with neither game even getting to extra innings.

— Movie of the Day— Dave (1993)— A guy who looks just like the President of the United States is recruited by the Secret Service to become a momentary stand-in, but when the President has a stroke while philandering, the stand-in becomes the #1 guy. Will anyone notice?

Kevin Kline plays the stand-in/President; Frank Langella/Kevin Dunn play the President’s assistants. Sigourney Weaver is the President’s wife, Ben Kingsley is the Vice President, and Charles Grodin has a small (but great) role as an old friend who helps him with a big job.

Excellent movie; who knew Charles Grodin could balance the country’s budget?

— NFL Trend of the Day— since 2017, Steelers are 19-10 ATS as a road favorite.

— New Orleans Saints had only 14 turnovers last year; they were minus-11 in turnovers, after being +31 in the previous three years combined. Obviously, that need to change.

— Why do baseball managers/coaches wear uniforms? They don’t in any other sport.

— Since the All-Star break, Cleveland Guardians are 0-8 in games where the winning run scored from the 7th inning on. Guardians are 4.5 games out of first place; they need to do better in the close games.

— In HBO’s show on the Lakers, Winning Time, this week’s episode focused on how Jerry West wanted to trade point guard Norm Nixon to Denver for David Thompson. If this is true, and not everything in this show is true, that trade would’ve been highway robbery.

David Thompson was freakin’ awesome; he was Michael Jordan before Jordan, he was actually Jordan’s favorite player when Thompson was at NC State.

A Laker team with Kareem, Magic, Worthy and Thompson would‘ve been a major problem to play against.

Anyway, the show is interesting.

— If the baseball playoffs started today (they don’t):
NL: Braves, Brewers, Dodgers. Wild Cards: Phillies, Giants, Marlins
AL: Orioles, Twins, Rangers. Wild Cards: Rays, Astros, Blue Jays

— Sunday would’ve been my parents’ 68th wedding anniversary; I am lucky to have had good, honest parents who tolerated my quirks (most of the time). Thanks!!!

Tuesday’s 6-pack:
Top 6 teams in the college football preseason poll:
6) USC
5) LSU
4) Alabama
3) Ohio State
2) Michigan
1) Georgia

Quote of the Day
“To have long-term success as a coach or in any position of leadership, you have to be obsessed in some way.”
Pat Riley

Tuesday’s quiz
Steve Kerr was a part of five NBA championship teams as a player, with what two teams?

Monday’s quiz
Russell Wilson finished his college football career at Wisconsin; he started it at NC State.

Sunday’s quiz
Pete Carroll was coach of the Patriots before Bill Belichick.

Tuesday’s Den: Nobody asked me, but……..

— ESPN has its 27-hour Fantasy Football Marathon on today, running until 10pm Tuesday night. Must be a boatload of $$$ involved with hosting fantasy football leagues.

— Couple of veteran running backs found new homes Monday:
Ezekiel Elliott signed a one-year, $6M deal with New England.
Dalvin Cook signed a one-year, $8.5M deal with the Jets.

— Make your travel plans now; the 2025 NFL Draft will be in Green Bay, as the league moves its draft around, mostly to cities that will never host a Super Bowl. I’m not sure how warm it is in Green Bay in April; I’m guessing they’ll have an indoor arena available.

— Royals 7, Mariners 6
KC led 5-0 after seven innings; strong start by Brady Singer.
Mariners took 6-5 lead in 9th, on a Julio Rodriguez single
Dairon Blanco ended the game with a squeeze bunt in bottom of the 9th.

— Braves 11, New York 3
Last five games, Braves outscored the two New York teams 51-13.
That is the Braves’ best run differential in any 5-game span since 1957.
2B Albies (hamstring) goes on the IL.
This was Atlanta’s 41st sellout this season.

— Rays 10, Giants 2— SF broadcaster Dave Flemming finished last in his fantasy football league last year; his penalty for that was being the Giants’ bat boy for this game.

— Rangers 12, Angels 0— Max Scherzer allowed one hit in 7 IP for Texas.

— Orioles 4, Padres 1— Grayson Rodriguez allowed one run in 7 IP.

— Colorado 6, Arizona 4— Diamondbacks are 4-13 in their last 17 games.

— Movie of the Day— Sea of Love (1989)— A detective investigating a series of murders becomes involved with a woman who may be the culprit.
Al Pacino is the detective; Ellen Barkin is the woman. John Goodman, John Spencer play cops, this is one of Samuel L Jackson’s earlier roles.
Good movie, but I’d also watch if Ellen Barkin was reading names out of the phone book.

— NFL Trend of the Day— In three years under Kevin Stafanski, Cleveland Browns are 7-12-1 ATS as a home favorite.

— Tampa Bay SS Wander Franco is on the Restricted List for at least a week, after social media posts questioned the alleged nature of a relationship between Franco and a younger woman.
Rays are still paying Franco, which doesn’t have to happen in such cases.

— Louisville basketball recruit Trentyn Flowers was supposed to bolster the Cardinals’ backcourt next winter, but be bolted to the Australian pro league Monday, a big blow to the Louisville program, as much for the timing as anything else— no time for the Cardinals to replace him.

— Money leaders on the Senior Golf Tour (or whatever they call it now) this year
1- Steve Stricker, $3,593,060
2- Bernhard Langer, $1,659,355
Stricker is 56, Langer is 65, still raking in the cash. Stricker has made double the money as anyone else on their tour.
— Major League Baseball attendance is up 9.3% so far this se
