Saturday’s 6-pack:

Major league leaders in home runs:
31— Shohei Ohtani, LAA
29— Matt Olson, Atl
26— Pete Alonso, NYM/Luis Robert, CWS
25— Mookie Betts, LA
23— Adolis Garcia, Tex
22— Soler Mia/Schwarber Phil/Albies Atl

Quote of the Day
“Overall, I’m glad we won this game. There’s no better way to start for your premiere. Honestly, I didn’t really know what I was doing on the court tonight. I’m trying to learn for next game.”
Victor Wembanyama

Saturday’s quiz
Allen Ludden hosted the gameshow Password for 19 years; what popular actress was he married to?
Hint: There is a famous episode of The Odd Couple where Felix/Oscar play on Password, and they play against Ludden’s wife and her partner.

Friday’s quiz
Rams have played in five Super Bowls; four different guys started at QB in those five games, with Kurt Warner starting twice. Vince Ferragamo, Jared Goff and Matthew Stafford are the other three quarterbacks.

Thursday’s quiz
Cal Ripken Jr wore number 8 when he played for the Orioles.

***********************************

Saturday’s Den: Random stuff on a summer night…….

Spurs 78, Hornets 68— ESPN made way too big a deal about Victor Wembanyama’s NBA Summer League debut; the kid is 18, and it showed Friday night.

They sold out the Thomas & Mack Arena, UNLV’s arena, but Wembanyama shot 2-13 from the floor— he did have 8 rebounds, 3 assists, 5 blocked shots, but if you’re hyping up a kid as the best prospect since Lebron James, more was expected.

— Please don’t bet on who is going to be Rookie of the Year, but if you have to, don’t bet on the favorite— there is no value in it.

Three days ago, Arizona OF Corbin Carroll looked like a great bet to win NL Rookie of the Year, but then his shoulder popped out of place while he was hitting and it still looked like it bothered him in Friday’s game.

— Oklahoma City Thunder made a trade this week where they got a draft pick in the 2030 NBA Draft, which means that they traded for a kid who is probably in the 6th grade these days.

— Wednesday night in Milwaukee, Cubs scored three runs in 9th inning to pull out a 4-3 road win, ending a streak where they had lost 112 games in a row when they trailed by 2+ runs in the 9th inning or later.

Phillies 4, Marlins 3— Bad loss for Miami; Christian Pache hit a pinch-hit homer in the 9th inning off closer AJ Puk. This is the same Christian Pache who wasn’t good enough to play for the woeful Oakland A’s. Phillies have now won their last 13 road games.

Arizona 7, Pittsburgh 3
Zac Gallen tossed 7 solid innings, improved to 11-3
Saw something in this game I don’t think I’ve seen before; Jake McCarthy walked his first two times up, then got picked off both times but stole second base both times. It looked like he got picked off on purpose, figuring he could outrun his opponents, which he did.

Seattle 10, Houston 1— Mariners scored nine runs in 4th inning, and didn’t hit a home run in that inning. Luis Castillo evened his record at 6-6 with seven good innings.

Dodgers 11, Angels 4— With Mike Trout out for a long time, the Halos are stumbling; will they trade Shohei Ohtani before the August 1 trade deadline? Angels are 45-45, 4.5 games behind the last Wild Card spot.

Mets 7, Padres 5 (10)
Over last five weeks, San Diego is 1-7 in games where winning run scored from 7th inning on.
Mets have now won six games in a row; they’re still 6.5 games behind the last playoff spot.

— Movie of the Day: The Meddler (2015)— An aging widow from New York (Susan Sarandon) follows her daughter to Los Angeles in hopes of starting a new life after her husband dies.

The title is fitting; Sarandon’s character gets involved in everyone’s business, but lot of what she does is helpful. Some of it isn’t; her relationship with her daughter is shaky.

Excellent cast: Sarandon, JK Simmons, Rose Byrne, Michael McKean, Harry Hamlin, Laura San Giacomo. Stumbled upon this movie on Amazon Prime; it is a good one.

— Worlds colliding; while you slept the other night, I was watching an old episode of Kojak, and who pops up on the screen but Yvonne Craig, who five years earlier had played Batgirl in the classic TV series Batman.

— College football bowl trend of the day: Underdogs are 5-2 SU/6-1 ATS in the last seven Cure Bowls.

— College football teams switching leagues this year:
going to Big X:
BYU, Central Florida, Cincinnati, Houston

going to AAC:
UAB, Charlotte, Florida Atlantic, North Texas, Rice, UTSA

going to Conference USA:
Jacksonville State, Liberty, New Mexico State, Sam Houston State

— If the baseball playoffs started today (they don’t)
NL: Braves, Reds, Arizona. Wild Cards: Dodgers-Marlins-Phillies
AL: Rays, Twins, Rangers. Wild Cards: Orioles, Blue Jays, Astros.

Sunday’s 6-pack:
Teams with first six picks in tonight’s baseball draft:
1- Pittsburgh
2- Washington
3- Detroit
4- Texas
5- Minnesota
6- Oakland— Please don’t draft a quarterback; drafting a new owner would help.

Quote of the Day
“You just got lesson number one: don’t think. It can only hurt the ballclub.”
Kevin Costner, Bull Durham

Sunday’s quiz
In the movie A Few Good Men, who played the losing lawyer in the climactic courtroom scene?

Saturday’s quiz
Allen Ludden hosted the gameshow Password for 19 years; he was married to Betty White.

Friday’s quiz
Rams have played in five Super Bowls; four different guys started at QB in those five games, with Kurt Warner starting twice. Vince Ferragamo, Jared Goff and Matthew Stafford are the other three quarterbacks.

*******************************************

Sunday’s Den: Wrapping up a sports Saturday

Reds 8, Brewers 5— I don’t usually say stuff like this, but MLB needs to add Reds’ rookie SS Elly De La Cruz to the NL All-Star team. He is must-watch TV, and baseball needs players who are must-watch TV, even if they’ve only been in the big leagues for a month.

In this game, De La Cruz knocked in the go-ahead run with a 7th inning single, then stole 2nd base, then stole 3rd base, then…….while the Milwaukee pitcher was sound asleep on the mound with the ball and his back to home plate, De La Cruz stole home, like a kid in a bad Little League game.

He has invigorated the Reds to a point where they’re in first place now.

Cincinnati was 27-33 when they promoted De La Cruz to the majors; since then, they’re 23-7, and that, in my opinion, makes him deserving of an All-Star spot, Plus, if he plays, it’ll help the TV ratings a little. I’ve heard that is important.

— Angels-Dodgers caught a break from the schedule makers; their series this weekend was only two games- they don’t play Sunday, so their All-Star breaks start a day early, a nice perk to the schedule for those two teams.

— Three Detroit pitchers combined to no-hit Toronto Saturday:
Matt Manning threw 6.2 hitless IP, walked 3 guys.
Jason Foley got the next four outs.
Alex Lange pitched a perfect 9th inning for his 13th save.

— Hall of Fame pitcher Jim Palmer mentioned on the Orioles-Twins game Saturday that he thought the baseball was livelier this season, a big part of why scoring is up this year.

— Major League record for most home runs in a season: 307, by the 2019 Twins.

— Joey Gallo has 228 plate appearances this year; he either walked, struck out or got hit by a pitch in 125 of those 228 at bats (54.8%). Gallo has 15 homers, only 28 RBI; he is 7-42 this season with runners in scoring position. He is a modern-day Dave Kingman, only not as good.

Padres 3, Mets 1
Blake Snell allowed one hit, struck out 11 in six IP.
Loss ends the Mets’ six-game winning streak.

Astros 3, Mariners 2— Light-hitting catcher Martin Maldonado may be hitting .169, but his 8th inning home run won this game for Houston.

Dodgers 10, Angels 5— Halos have lost five in a row, nine of last ten games. Trade deadline is 22 days away; will they trade Shohei Ohtani? Angels are 4.5 games out of the last playoff spot and Mike Trout ain’t walking thru that door anytime soon.

— Why aren’t Dave Parker and/or Dale Murphy in the Hall of Fame? They were both better ballplayers than Harold Baines, who got in a couple years ago.

— Movie of the Day— Margin Call (2011)— Movie about the key people at an investment bank over a 24-hour period during the early stages of the 2008 financial crisis. Not a pleasant movie but a very good one.

Impressive cast; Demi Moore, Kevin Spacey, Stanley Tucci, Mary McDonnell, Jeremy Irons.

— There are 10,043 poker players in the Main Event at the World Series of Poker, a new record. First place in the event will be $12.1M.

— College football bowl trend of the day— Underdogs covered six of last seven Liberty Bowls.

— If the baseball playoffs started today (they don’t)
NL: Braves, Reds, Arizona. Wild Cards: Dodgers-Marlins-Phillies
AL: Rays, Guardians, Rangers. Wild Cards: Orioles, Astros, Tor/NYY.
