Sunday’s 6-pack
Major league leaders in pitching strikeouts:
121— Spencer Strider, Atl
113— Kevin Gausman, Tor
102— Shohei Ohtani, LAA
94— Mitch Keller, Pitt
93— Clayton Kershaw, LA
92— Luis Castillo, Sea/Pablo Lopez, Minn

Quote of the Day
“Yeah, we have regulations with the pitch clock. Obviously it’s very sensitive — when the pitch clock goes off, and whether or not people are going to circumvent the rules that are in place. Nola did a good job the first two to three innings. And then, as the game went on, he started to throw more and more balls out. Where we felt, he was trying to reset the clock. Which is an attempt to circumvent the pitch clock regulations.”
Umpire Bill Miller, who worked the LA-Philly game Saturday

Sunday’s quiz
In Magnum PI, when Tom Selleck’s character goes undercover as the backup QB of an NFL team, what number does he wear?

Saturday’s quiz
Seven major league baseball teams play their home games in a domed stadium.

Friday’s quiz
Bob Welch was the last major league pitcher to win 25+ games in a season; he went 27-6 for the 1990 Oakland A’s.

Sunday’s Den: Wrapping up a sports Saturday

— Vegas 3, Florida 2

Golden Knights can win their first Stanley Cup at home Tuesday.
Both teams had 31 shots on goal in this game.
Panthers had 28 penalty minutes; Vegas had 4.
Vegas leads series, 3-1.

— 43-year old Rich Hill threw 119 pitches for the Pirates Friday night in their win over the Mets; that is the most pitches by any pitcher in a game this year, and the freakin’ guy is 43.

— Minnesota Vikings cut 6-year veteran RB Dalvin Cook this week; he ran ball for 1,173 yards last year, but Vikings have had to make multiple cuts because of the salary cap, so the productive Cook was told to take a hike.

Cook has been in the last four Pro Bowls; he will be sought after.

— Toronto Raptors hired Darko Rajakovic as its new head coach; he’s been an assistant with the Suns, Thunder and most recently, Memphis. He’s been a head coach in the G League so he is well-prepared for this next step.

— So far this season in the USFL, underdogs are 20-14 SU, 25-9 ATS

— There are 33 poker players who have won 5+ bracelets in the World Series of Poker.

— A’s 2, Brewers 1 (10)— Oakland has won four in row for first time this year; they’re 7-5 in their last 12 games. Paul Blackburn tossed six shutout innings in this game.

— Dodgers 9, Phillies 0— Rookie P Miller is 3-0, 0.78 in his first four MLB starts.

— Cubs 4, Giants 0— Kyle Hendricks allowed one hit in eight IP.

— Astros 6, Guardians 4— Jose Abreu homered, knocked in three runs for Houston. He’s homered in consecutive games, after having only one homer all season before that.

— Reds 8, Cardinals 4— St Louis is 27-38, in last place in NL Central; will they be sellers at the trade deadline? That would be really unusual.

— Twins 9, Blue Jays 4— Toronto led 3-1 in 8th inning; Twins scored seven runs in the 8th.

— Marlins 5, White Sox 1
Miami scored five runs in the last inning.
In 6 of Alcantara’s 13 starts, Marlins haven’t scored in first five innings.
White Sox have started a right-handed pitcher in each of their last 184 games.

— If the baseball playoffs started today (they do not):
NL Braves, Pirates, Arizona. Wild Cards: Dodgers-Marlins-Brewers
AL Rays, Twins, Rangers. Wild Cards: Orioles-New York-Astros

Monday’s 6-pack

Major League leaders in stolen bases:
31— Esteury Ruiz, A’s
28— Ronald Acuna, Atl
22— Wander Franco, TB
20— Bobby Witt Jr, KC
19— Ji Hwan Bae, Pitt/Corbin Carroll, Ariz
18— Starling Marte, NYM/Jorge Mateo, Balt

Quote of the Day
“You shouldn’t retire from something; you need to retire to something.”
Bud Grant

Monday’s quiz
Terry Francona won two World Series in eight years managing the Red Sox; who replaced him as manager in Boston?

Sunday’s quiz
In Magnum PI, when Tom Selleck’s character goes undercover as the backup QB of an NFL team, he wears number 16.

Saturday’s quiz
Seven major league baseball teams play their home games in a domed stadium.

************************************************** *

Monday’s Den: Wrapping up a sports weekend…….

— Kirk Saarloos spent seven years in the major leagues, pitching for three different teams; he helped the A’s make the 2006 playoffs.

These days, Saarloos is the baseball coach at TCU; his Horned Frogs made the College World Series this weekend. TCU set back-to-back attendance records on consecutive nights — 8,812 fans on Friday and 8,994 on Saturday.

This is the sixth time since 2010 that TCU has made the College World Series, but the first time under coach Saarloos.

— Wake Forest is also going to the College World Series; they’re going for the first time since 1955, when they won the national title.

— Canadian golfer Nick Taylor drained a 72-foot eagle putt on the 4th playoff hole Sunday; he won the Canadian Open, the first Canadian to win his home tournament since Pat Fletcher in 1954. Taylor banked $1.62M for the win, plus he’ll probably never have to buy a drink in Canada again.

— When you think about the argument about who the best basketball player ever is, remember that Michael Jordan played all 82 games in a season nine times. No load management for him.

Remember that they outlawed the dunk in college basketball because of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Milwaukee won an NBA title in their third year of existence, Kareem’s 2nd NBA season.

Remember that at age 38, after 20 years in the NBA, Lebron James can still carry his team deep into the playoffs. Someday before he retires, one of his teammates will be his son.

Those three guys are the three best players ever, in whatever order you choose.

— Happy 72nd birthday to Dan Fouts, one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history, maybe the best quarterback of the Super Bowl era who never got to play in a Super Bowl.

Fouts passed for 43,040 yards, 254 TD’s in a tremendous 15-year career, all played with the Chargers. Saw him play in a scrimmage once against the Rams in Anaheim Stadium; it was like watching God throw a football, he was that good.

Happy birthday, sir.

— Trevor Bauer is pitching in Japan these days; last I looked, he was 3-2, 4.75 in six starts, giving up 10 home runs in 36 IP.

A’s 8, Brewers 6— After starting the season 12-50, Oakland has won five games in a row; they knocked the Pirates out of first place Wednesday, then put them back in first place by sweeping the Brewers in Miller Park this weekend.

Rockies 5, Padres 4
Nolan Jones hit a walk-off homer after a 9th inning rain delay.
30 years ago, in the Rockies’ first-ever season, they drew over 4,400,000 fans, still an MLB record, while playing home games in Mile High Stadium.

Pirates 2, Mets 1
Andrew McCutchen got his 2,000th career hit.
Mets lost for the eighth time in nine games.

Reds 4, Cardinals 3— Cincinnati is 5-2 since they brought up Elly De La Cruz up from the minor leagues; what took them so long? The guy is 8-22, with 7 runs scored, 4 RBI in his first seven MLB games (plus, three stolen bases).

Boston 3, New York 2 (10)— Bronx went 2-4 on this homestand with Aaron Judge sidelined with a foot injury; they scored 17 runs in those six games.

Red Sox are 2-3 in their last five games, scoring a total of 12 runs in those five games.

Blue Jays 7, Twins 6
Toronto trailed 6-1 in fifth inning; they won game with three runs in 8th inning.

Giants 13, Cubs 3
This was a terrible game; Giants made four errors, still won by 10 runs.
Giants SS Brandon Crawford pitched the last inning, with SF ahead by 10 runs.
Why is a big market team like the Cubs this bad (28-37)?

Arizona 7, Detroit 5
Tigers led 5-2 early; Arizona won game with four runs in ninth inning.
Diamondbacks have a 3.5-game lead in the NL West.

— If the baseball playoffs started today (they do not):
NL Braves, Pirates, Arizona. Wild Cards: Dodgers-Marlins-Brewers
AL Rays, Twins, Rangers. Wild Cards: Orioles-New York-Astros
