Tuesday’s 6-pack:

Six interesting NFL spreads for Week 14:
— Pittsburgh @ Minnesota (-3)
— New Orleans (-5.5) @ NJ Jets
— San Francisco @ Cincinnati (-1)
— Baltimore @ Cleveland (-2.5)
— Atlanta @ Carolina (-3)
— Dallas (-4) @ Washington

Quote of the Day
“Everybody’s trying to get to the NBA off the ranking we had, but nobody is willing to sacrifice minutes, touches, anything. It’s been miserable…I’m going to have to be a complete asshole from this point on and only play the players that care.”
Memphis basketball coach Penny Hardaway

Tuesday’s quiz
Peyton Manning was the first pick in the 1998 NFL Draft; which former Chargers’ QB was the second pick in that draft?

Monday’s quiz
Ben Roethlisberger and Sean McVay went to the same college, Miami OH. Roethlisberger is actually four years older than the Rams’ coach.

Sunday’s quiz
Chargers drafted QB Justin Herbert with 6th pick in the 2020 NFL Draft; Joe Burrow and Tua Tagovailoa were taken ahead of him.

************************

Tuesday’s Den: Nobody asked me, but…….

12) Purdue Boilermakers are #1 in country in college basketball, first time they’ve ever been atop the national rankings. Purdue made the Final Four in 1969/1980, losing the national title game to UCLA in 1969.

Matt Painter is 15-11 in NCAA Tournament games; lot of time will pass between now and March, but couple of pundits have already picked the Boilermakers to win it all this season.

11) Memphis Tigers lost their last three games, after a 5-0 start; apparently the team doesn’t have good chemistry. coach Penny Hardaway

Freshmen Bates and Duren were the top two recruits in the Class of 2022 and were considered future NBA lottery picks, but they re-classified to Class of ’21 and went to college a year early- they’ve both been starting, which apparently irked the older players on the squad.

Memphis doesn’t have a true point guard; they tried to make the 6-9 Bates a PG, but he isn’t a point guard and now he isn’t even starting anymore- he played 22 minutes off the bench at Ole Miss Saturday.

You can’t force chemistry on a team; having talent is great, but if they don’t play together, it is mostly wasted talent. Will be interesting to see how their season plays out.

10) You watch the New Orleans Saints play and you know they need a quarterback; last time the Saints drafted a QB in the first round was 1971, when they drafted Archie Manning in the first round. Archie was a lot different than his two sons; he played like a right-handed Steve Young, ran around a lot, but he was stuck on a terrible team and mostly got pummeled in the NFL.

But Archie Manning is a legend at Ole Miss; the speed limit on their campus is still 18 miles an hour, because Manning wore number 18 playing for the Rebels.

9) NBA’s Houston Rockets started the season 1-16, losing 15 games in a row, but all of a sudden they’ve gotten hot and won six straight games. Five of those six games went over the total; under was 12-5 in their first 17 games.

Houston plays the Nets Wednesday, which should test that winning streak.

8) Maryland fired basketball coach Mark Turgeon last week; Turgeon went 226-116 at Maryland, 105–79 in conference games, 5-5 in NCAA Tournament games. He signed a contract extension last April, but apparently is getting paid $5M to go away.

Wish the hell someone would pay me $5M to go away; I’d go away for $50, maybe $25.

7) A new bowl game this fall is the Jimmy Kimmel LA Bowl, which will be played December 18 at SoFi Stadium, where Rams/Chargers play.

Kimmel said: ”This is not a joke. This is a real bowl game named after me, so mark your calendars. … It’s like an early Christmas gift for all of us.”

The Super Bowl is at SoFi Stadium this season; the college football national title game is at SoFi in January 2023.

6) There are seven first-time head coaches in the NFL this season; they are a combined 37-48 against the spread.

5) Tony Romo makes $18M a year doing NFL games on CBS? Seriously? Cris Collinsworth makes $12.5M from NBC? If I’m home and hear Collinsworth’s voice on TV, I hit the mute button, he is so annoying.

Romo is good, but he ain’t $18M worth of good. No one is.

4) Feel like this fact fell thru the cracks little bit last week, but it bears repeating; of the last 55 NFL teams who threw 4+ interceptions in a game, Baltimore Ravens in Week 12 are only team that won that game- they beat the Browns 16-10 on a Sunday night game, surviving four INTs thrown by Lamar Jackson, three of them on consecutive possessions.

3) Odd scheduling quirk with Cleveland; they’re playing consecutive games against Baltimore, with their bye week in between. That doesn’t happen much.

2) Carolina Panthers fired OC Joe Brady during their bye week; Brady was the OC at LSU two years ago, when Joe Burrow led the Tigers to the national title, but Carolina has stammered thru this season, and they told Brady to take a hike.

Sounds like head coach Matt Rhule is taking the rap for owner David Tepper here; really rich hedge fund traders aren’t terribly patient people- that’s how Tepper became wealthy, and he is really, really wealthy— $13 billion worth.

Brady is only 32 years old, so he’ll re-surface soon with a big coordinator’s job, probably back at the college level.

1) Weird news item of the day:
A couple has sued Texas Longhorns’ special teams coach Jeff Banks and his girlfriend, saying Thomas’ monkey bit their child in the backyard of Banks’ house on Halloween night.

The girlfriend was identified in the lawsuit as “Pole Assassin” which her stage name when she dances. She once appeared on “The Jerry Springer Show” with the monkey.

Wish I was making all that up, but I’m not that creative.

Wednesday’s 6-pack:

NFL leaders in receptions:
100— Cooper Kupp, Rams
86— Keenan Allen LAC, Tyreek Hill KC, Jaylen Waddle Mia
82— Chris Godwin, TB
80— Davante Adams, GB
78— Justin Jefferson, Minn
76— Diontae Johnson, Pitt

Quote of the Day
“Let’s not give more credit than we need to give credit to Bill Belichick in this one. Whether it was Bill or anybody else, they beat us, right? But you sit here and you tell me when we start with an average starting field position of the 40-yard line and he starts with the 23-yard line — I’m rounding up in both cases — and we were 1 for 4 in the red zone and they were 0 for 1 in the red zone? You give me that ahead of time, I’d say I like my chances. I like my chances.”
Buffalo coach Sean McDermott

Wednesday’s quiz
Jim Valvano won a national title coaching NC State; where did he coach before NC State?

Tuesday’s quiz
Peyton Manning was the first pick in the 1998 NFL Draft; Ryan Leaf was the second pick in that draft.

Monday’s quiz
Ben Roethlisberger and Sean McVay went to the same college, Miami OH. Roethlisberger is actually four years older than the Rams’ coach.

*********************************

Wednesday’s Den: Mid-week musings…….

13) Miami Hurricanes are paying U of Oregon $9M, which was the buyout in Mario Cristobal’s contract with the Ducks. Cristobal will make $8M a year with Miami.

12) McNeese State football coach Frank Wilson quit this week, will join Brian Kelly’s staff at LSU as an associate head coach. Wilson was an assistant at LSU from 2010-15, then became head coach at Tex-San Antonio, where he went 19-29 before being shown the door there.

Wilson is regarded as an outstanding recruiter, especially in Louisiana; he is going to have to recruit a QB- LSU’s QB Max Johnson hit the transfer portal Tuesday night.

That leads me to a question: when a newly-hired coach talks to his new team, and obviously tells some of them that they’re going to be replaced, or that their starting spots aren’t guaranteed, what are those conversations like? What %age of them are civil? Some of them have to be at least a little contentious, yes?

Max Johnson’s dad played in the NFL, was the Buccaneers’ QB in a Super Bowl. Jake Johnson is his brother, a highly-touted tight end recruit who is also leaving LSU. That would be excellent really TV, to hear those conversations.

11) Right now, if they held voting for college basketball Coach of the Year, I’d vote for Minnesota coach Ben Johnson, whose Gophers are off to a 7-0 start.

They only have one top 100 win, but when Johnson was hired by Minnesota, he had one player on the team— 10 other guys transferred, and an 11th one is hurt and won’t play this season. To cobble together a squad quickly, and have that team be successful, is really difficult.

10) Several college basketball leagues are playing 20-game conference schedules now; big part of the reason why is that these leagues have their own TV networks- they need games to provide programming for those networks.

It is also better for fans than seeing big-name schools play cruddy opponents in December.

9) James Madison 52, Virginia 49:
— Huge win for JMU’s program- they opened a new 8,500-seat arena.
— Dukes are now 1-11 against their in-state rival.
— 6-4 Virginia has losses to Navy/JMU; they were 4-26 on arc.

8) When the Bills lost at home to New England Monday night, Buffalo had a 17-yard edge in field position, an unusually big margin. Teams with a 17-yard edge in field position almost never lose; so far this season, teams that won field position by 10+ yards are 46-6 SU.

7) NFL stuff:
— Rookie Davis Mills (0-6 as starter) figures to start this week for Houston.
— Giants have QB injury issues; Jake Fromm may play in his first NFL game Sunday against the Chargers. Few weeks ago, Fromm was Buffalo’s 4th-string QB. He was a 5th-round draft pick out of Georgia in 2020.

6) NBA’s Cleveland Cavaliers are a surprising 19-6 ATS as an underdog this season, 13-3 as a road dog.

5) Starting January 15, unvaccinated NBA players can’t travel to Canada, which obviously means unvaccinated Raptors can’t play at home either.

4) Michigan was pounding Iowa 35-3 in the Big 14 title game Saturday night; they scored another TD with 1:25 left, making the final margin 42-3. I’m guessing that touchdown will be remembered by the Hawkeyes; usually, there is something of a code about running up the score. Something to tuck away for the future.

3) PNC Arena in Raleigh is a busy place; Louisville-NC State played a basketball game there at 2:00 Saturday, then at 7:30 that night, Sabres-Hurricanes played an NHL game there.

On TV, they said it takes 90 minutes to switch the arena from basketball to hockey.

2) There are murmurs on the Interweb that Max Scherzer wants the Mets to hire Buck Showalter as their new manager; owner Steve Cohen is apparently on board with that.

1) Was daydreaming yesterday and thought of a weird rule change that would make football more interesting.

On kickoffs, if a kicker boots the ball thru the uprights 75 yards away, his team gets a point. It would add some interest to kickoffs, for sure.

Thursday’s 6-pack:

NFL leaders in rushing attempts:
241— Jonathan Taylor, Ind
227— Joe Mixon, Cin
219— Derrick Henry, Tenn
217— Najee Harris, Pitt
206— Antonio Gibson, Wash
171— Ezekiel Elliott, Dal

Quote of the Day
“I think that’s my thing. People are going to talk about it, yes or no, but I know I gotta do better. I had a long summer, I think I relaxed a little bit, not taking care, but I gotta be better. I had a long summer. I had the Olympics, took three weeks off and then I said I relaxed a little bit, maybe too much, and I just gotta get back on track.”
Luka Doncic

Thursday’s quiz
What QB that is eligible for the Hall of Fame had the most passing yards, but isn’t in the Hall of Fame?

Wednesday’s quiz
Jim Valvano won a national title coaching NC State; he coached at Iona before NC State.

Tuesday’s quiz
Peyton Manning was the first pick in the 1998 NFL Draft; Ryan Leaf was the second pick in that draft.

Thursday’s Den: Doing some thinking out loud…….

13) They were telling a story on TV Tuesday night that helps explain the current state of college basketball. Kid on Texas Tech goes to an NBA combine last spring, trying to determine if he would get drafted last summer. He didn’t get good news, so he is back in Lubbock.

But while he was at the combine, he talked to a kid who played at Oral Roberts last year, and they became friends. The Texas Tech kid talks the Oral Roberts kid into bolting to Tech, making the Red Raiders a stronger team this season.

The ESPN sideline reporter is telling this story like it is a great thing, but if you’re the coach at Oral Roberts, it ain’t so great- they lost one of their best players because he did so well that he tried out for the NBA, and a bigger school peached him.

Coaches have to have their heads on a swivel these days, to make sure bigger schools aren’t going to steal their players. Happens all the time.

12) There hasn’t been a punt return TD in the NFL this season; this would be the first time in at least 50 years that the league didn’t have any punt return scores.

11) Last fifteen Army-Navy games have stayed under the total, mostly because neither team throws the ball very much. This year’s total is only 34; supposed to be warm on Saturday.

10) Wisconsin 64, Indiana 59:
— Hoosiers led this game 42-20 late in first half.
— Indiana has lost 19 straight games at Wisconsin
— Davis had 23 for Wisconsin, the only Badger in double figures.
— Indiana was only 6-13 on foul line.

9) Marquette 64, Kansas State 63:
— Marquette was 11-37 on arc, 15-28 inside arc, 1-3 on line.
— Marquette played 8 guys 15:00+; five of them are freshmen.

8) West Virginia 56, UConn 53:
— Mountaineers survived 12-27 shooting on foul line.
— UConn outrebounded West Virginia, 45-31.
— Two guards on West Virginia played all 40:00.

7) Tennessee lost 57-52 in OT to Texas Tech Tuesday night, and they looked awful doing it, going 6-40 on arc, 13-31 inside arc. But at this time of year, things can be deceiving.

Tennessee won 69-54 at Colorado Saturday, then flew to New York City, worked out at the Brooklyn Nets’ facility Sunday, practiced Monday, then played Tuesday. Too much travel for a college team this early in the season.

6) Fresno State hired Jeff Tedford as its new football coach; he coached the Bulldogs from 2017-19, but quit for health reasons. Tedford was 26-14 in his first stint with Fresno; he’s also been a head coach for the BC Lions in the CFL, and was Aaron Rodgers’ coach with the Cal Bears, leading Cal to an 82-57 record.

5) If the NFL Draft was today (it isn’t), these would be the top 7 picks:
Lions, Jaguars, Texans, Jets, Giants, Jets, Giants.

4) Speaking of the Giants, they’re spending this week in Arizona, as they prepare to play the Chargers at SoFi Stadium Sunday. No word yet whether Jake Fromm will play in his first NFL game, or whether Mike Glennon will clear concussion protocol and get the start.

3) During the pandemic, when there were no ballgames on TV, I became more interested in movies, and the career paths that actors/actresses have.

Was watching A League of Their Own the other night, the 1992 movie about the women’s baseball league, and the character who ran the league was Ira Lowenstein, played by veteran actor David Strathairn.

Turn the clock ahead 27-28 years, and David Strathairn was in eight episodes of Billions, playing political operative Black Jack Foley. Quite a career he has had; you might not know the name, but you’ve probably seen him in at least 1-2 movies.

2) Las Vegas Raiders signed K Daniel Carlson to a 4-year extension worth $18.4M, with $10.2M of that money guaranteed.

1) In the NFL, under is 40-21-1 this season in AFC-NFC games, 69-62-1 in all other games.
