Tuesday’s 6-pack:
Six interesting NFL spreads for this week:
— Ravens (-7) @ Dolphins
— Browns @ Patriots (-1.5)
— Falcons @ Cowboys (-9.5)
— Bills (-13) @ Jets
— Saints @ Titans (-3)
— Jaguars @ Colts (-10.5)

Tuesday’s quiz
Who played QB for the Chicago Bears, last time they played in a Super Bowl?

Monday’s quiz
Boomer Esiason holds the Cincinnati Bengals’ single-game record for passing yards.

Sunday’s quiz
Of the 32 starting QB’s in the NFL, six played college ball in the SEC.

******************************

Tuesday’s Den: Nobody asked me, but……..

13) I don’t understand why people run marathons; running 26 miles seems excessive.

During the battle of Marathon in 490 BC, Philippides, a Greek messenger, witnessed a Persian vessel changing its course towards Athens as the Battle of Marathon was nearing a victorious end for the Greek army.

He interpreted this as an attempt by the defeated Persians to rush into the Greek capital and claim a false victory in the battle, thus claiming their authority over Greek land.

It is said that Philippides ran the entire distance to Athens without stopping, discarding his weapons and even clothes to lose as much weight as possible, and burst into the assembly, exclaiming “we have won!”

He ran 26 miles. And then he died.

Anyway, if I drive 26 miles, I’m looking for a McDonald’s for some food. Credit to people who are in good enough shape to run that much. Just isn’t my thing.

12) Summation of Cleveland Browns’ last month:
— in weeks 7-9, Browns went 1-2, scoring 14-17-10 points. There was drama involved, as far as which receivers caught how many passes.
— last Friday, Cleveland released WR Odell Beckham.
— Sunday, Browns scored 41 points against a good Cincinnati team.

Go figure.

11) AFC West figures to have a fascinating finish; the current standings:
5-3— Chargers— gave up 32.3 ppg last four games
5-3— Raiders- signed DeSean Jackson
5-4— Chiefs— what’s up with their offense?
5-4— Broncos—gave up 17-10-16 points last three games.

10) Omitted this game from my Sunday writeup; it was a good one.
Tennessee 45, Kentucky 42:
— Vols had TD plays of 75-72 yards in first quarter.
— Tennessee defense scored on a pick-6 in 3rd quarter.
— Vols averaged 15.8 yards/pass attempt.

— Kentucky outgained Tennessee, 612-461
— Wildcats converted 12-17 on 3rd down, had 35 first downs.
— Kentucky WR Robinson caught 13 passes for 166 yards.
— There we no points scored in last 9:36 of this game.

9) Washington Huskies suspended head coach Jimmy Lake for a game, after he shoved a player during the game with Oregon Saturday. Wasn’t that big a deal, but Washington is 4-5— people there aren’t used to 4-5. If he was 8-1, he’d be praised as a disciplinarian.

8) Steelers 29, Bears 27:
— Steelers led 20-6 after three quarters.
— Boswell kicked 40-yard FG with 0:26 left for the win.
— Boswell also made FG’s of 54-52 yards.

— Bears’ first five drives: 18 plays, 61 yards, no points.
— Bears’ last six drives: 43 plays, 329 yards, 20 points.
— Chicago scored TD, running back fumbled punt for a score.

7) NFL underdogs went 10-4 ATS this week, 7-7 straight up. Weird week.

6) Active NFL players who appeared on Peyton/Eli Manning’s simulcast of the Monday night games? Their teams have gone 0-6 the following week. There was no ManningCast this week.

5) Arizona doesn’t turn its clocks back for Daylight Savings Time, like the rest of the country; good for them. Getting dark at 4:45 is too early.

4) 76ers’ star Joel Embiid tested positive for COVID, is out for a few games.

3) College basketball starts up Tuesday night; will take couple weeks to unravel who is good and who might not be as good. Ton of transfers; some teams have almost totally new rosters.

Busy few weeks coming up; enjoy the games.

2) Some quick notes:
— South Carolina’s Keyshawn Bryant is suspended for the Gamecocks’ first five games.
— Louisville coach Chris Mack is out for six games.
— Hubert Davis has replaced Roy Williams as coach at North Carolina.
— There are many teams with almost totally new rosters.

We’ll watch lot of games, study a lot and try to make sense of what is going on.

1) I miss the ESPN Basketball Marathon, where they showed games non-stop for 30 hours in a row, something like that. Remember sitting at a bar in Las Vegas playing video poker while some obscure game was on at 3am in Las Vegas. Good stuff; they should bring the marathon back.

Wednesday’s Den: Wrapping up the first night of college basketball

Unusually busy Tuesday night; 183 college basketball games, 304 of the 358 D-I teams in action all over the country. NBA, NHL, three MAC football games. Remote got a workout tonight.

13) UC San Diego (+16.5) 80, California 67:
— Tritons are in their second year of D-I basketball.
— Cal led by 11 in first half, but went 5-18 on arc, 14-24 on foul line.
— Mark Fox went 10-28 in Pac-12 his first two years at Cal; this isn’t good.

12) Kansas 87, Michigan State 74:
— Agbaji scored 29 points, going 3-6 on arc, 8-8 on line.
— Usually better to play Izzo teams early in season; his teams start to gel after New Year’s.

11) Duke 79, Kentucky 71:
— Duke won despite going 1-13 on arc.
— Duke shot 30-48 (62.5%) inside arc.
— Kentucky big man Tshiebwe had 17 points, 19 rebounds.
— Rest of Wildcats shot 33% from floor.

10) Houston (-19) 83, Hofstra 75 OT
— Hofstra led by 13 points in second half.
— Houston was 15-25 on line, Hofstra 5-5.
— Hofstra was 12-42 on arc, 17-31 inside arc.

9) Western Illinois (+17) 75, Nebraska 74:
— Nebraska went 2-6 on foul line in final 0:55.
— Leathernecks outrebounded Nebraska, 57-37.
— Cornhuskers went 14-45 last two years; this isn’t good.

8) Navy (+15.5) 66, Virginia 58:
— Middies made 11-21 three-point shots.
— Navy outrebounded Virginia 35-30.

7) Northern Illinois (+19.5) 71, Washington 64:
— Huskies made 12-23 shots on the arc.
— Washington shot 26.7% from the floor.
— Washington was 20-38 last two years, now this……

6) Sacred Heart 86, LaSalle 81 OT:
— LaSalle hasn’t has winning season in A-14 since 2013.
— Sacred Heart out rebounded LaSalle 50-41.
— Atlantic 14 teams aren’t supposed to lose to NEC teams.

5) Citadel (+10.5) 78, Pittsburgh 63:
— Citadel had lost 46 in a row to ACC teams.
— Jason Roche was 8-14 from floor, all behind the arc.
— Pitt’s roster has been depleted by injuries/off-court stuff.

4) Miami OH (+10) 72, Georgia Tech 69:
— Miami outscored Tech 9-0 over final 2:29.
— RedHawks shot 57.6% inside arc, only 6-31 on arc.
— MAC teams stepped up pretty well Tuesday.

3) Ohio State (-16.5) 67, Akron 66
— Akron took lead on a 4-point play with 0:06 left.
— Buckeyes hit a short jumper in lane with 0:01 left for win.
— Ohio State led by 14 late in first half.

2) Indiana (-24.5) 68, Eastern Michigan 62:
— Mike Woodson wins his debut coaching his alma mater.
— Indiana led this game 40-19 early in 2nd half.
— EMU cut lead to 58-57 with 2:47 left; gutty effort.

1) All in all, an interesting day/night; 3pm games at Manhattan, Washington State got things underway. There is so much to sort out as teams start to play games with fans in stands, as we get a little closer to normal.

Did you know that neither Manhattan or Manhattanville are in Manhattan?

Eastern Michigan has 11 new players this year; they hung in pretty well at Indiana; who are the coaches who are best at putting together a roster quickly? Times have changed; not too many teams have a lot of continuity.
