Tuesday’s 6-pack

Best offensive rebounding teams in the country:
6) Memphis
5) Buffalo
4) Houston
3) UConn
2) TCU
1) Kentucky

Quote of the Day
“Players are used to their ‘threats.’ Owners’ actions have made it clear all along that they have a set # of games where they still make profits/get TV money. They don’t want to play. It’s sad that these are the guys who drive the direction and ‘future’ of our amazing sport.”
Major league pitcher Jameson Taillon

Tuesday’s quiz
Which three schools has John Calipari led to a Final Four?

Monday’s quiz
In the last 14 years, the NBA Finals gone seven games three times; there has been one sweep (2018, Warriors over Cleveland).

Sunday’s quiz
Ja Morant played his college basketball at Murray State.

********************************

Tuesday’s Den: Nobody asked me, but…….

13) Welcome to March, one of the best months of the year. We better enjoy it too, since the morons who run baseball look like they’re running that sport into the ground. April might be a slow month this year (looking forward to the USFL).

This will be our first normal March Madness since 2019; there is no dominant team, and it is going to be fun to watch. Handicapping will be difficult, but when isn’t it?

12) If you’re looking at the best metric to define success in the NCAA Tournament, I’d look at:
— offensive and defensive efficiency

Teams that don’t rank in the top 20 in efficiency haven’t been winning national titles.

We’ll get more into that next week, with the conference tournaments going on.

11) Since 1985, no team lost their first conference tournament game, then won the national title. Four national champs (1985-87-95-97) didn’t have a conference tournament that year.

From 1990-2013, 13 of 22 national champs also won their conference tournament; since 2014, only one national champ (Villanova, 2018) won their conference tournament.

10) Took me two months, but I finally saw American Underdog, the Kurt Warner movie. Was different than I thought it would be, probably a little better too.

One excellent tidbit; in the last Arena League game Warner played in, the 1996 Arena Bowl, the Iowa Barnstormers were driving for the winning score; on the last play, Warner completed a pass, but the receiver was tackled on the one-yard line, and Iowa lost 42-38.

3.5 years later, Warner’s St Louis Rams won the Super Bowl with an almost-identical ending, adding to the Hollywood-like story of his football career.

Bruce McGill is in the movie; he is a great actor, this generation’s Jack Warden. He plays the coach of the Barnstormers, the guy who actually invented Arena Football. Dennis Quaid plays Dick Vermeil, Anna Paquin plays Brenda Warner.

Not one curse word in the whole movie, which is unusual. Very good movie.

9) North Carolina 88, Syracuse 79 OT
— Syracuse (+7.5) is a very bad beat.
— Eight guys in this game played 41:00+.
— Tar Heels won 10 of their last 12 games.

8) Central Connecticut 67, FDU 66:
— Blue Devils trailed by 15 with 18:10 left in game.
— CCSU moves on to play top-seed Bryant in NEC tourney.

7) Washington State 103, Oregon State 97 OT:
— Beavers were in Elite 8 LY; they’re 3-25 this year, 0-15 in 2022.
— Coogs shot 69.2% inside arc, OSU 67.5%. Lot of layups.

6) Purdue plays at Wisconsin Tuesday night; Boilers are 6-0 vs teams in Kenpom’s top 25, but they’re also 1-5 this season when they score less than 70 points. Wisconsin won its last 17 games when giving up less than 70 points.

5) There is a movement among NFL teams that in playoff games that go to overtime, both teams should get a possession. Sounds like a good idea.

4) Arizona Cardinals will host a game in Mexico next fall; Jaguars will play a game in England, Buccaneers will play in Germany. Packers-Saints will meet in England.

3) Raiders/Jaguars is the Hall of Fame Game in Canton this summer; Josh McDaniels is the Raiders’ new coach; he played his high school games on that field.

2) Derek Jeter quit as CEO of the Miami Marlins Monday; he is selling his 4% of the team, which is worth an estimated $40-44M.

In five years since the team was sold, Marlins went 295-412, though they did make the playoffs in the shortened 2020 season.

Jeter inherited a team with Stanton-Ozuna-Yelich-Realmuto. He traded all four of them, with Sandy Alcantara the only player he got back who has evolved into a star.

Media will never say a bad word about Jeter, especially in New York, but he did a cruddy job in Miami. Interesting to see where they go from here; will they put that ugly statue back behind the centerfield fence? Will they ever contend again? In 2020, they made the playoffs, but they were only 31-29 in the regular season.

1) There are 510 players in the NBA; only 129 of them get 10+ shots a game. To make it in the NBA, you need to be great at spassing or at omething when you don’t have the ball— getting loose balls, rebounding, defending, screening, running the floor.

Effort/energy wins games; players that defend/rebound will make rosters, get playing time.

Wednesday’s 6-pack

Some of the most experienced teams in the country:
1) Manhattan
2) Cleveland State
5) Southern Utah
7) Providence
9) St Bonaventure
10) Penn State

Quote of the Day
“We all get along good, and I’m glad he’s (Bieniemy) back with us and rolling. My thought was that he potentially would get a head-coaching job, which I would have been happy with, too. But that’s not the way it worked out.”
Andy Reid, talking about his OC, Eric Bieniemy

Wednesday’s quiz
Who played the judge in the classic movie, My Cousin Vinny?
(Hint: He is most famous as the star of a 60’s TV comedy)

Tuesday’s quiz
John Calipari has led UMass, Memphis and Kentucky to Final Fours.

Monday’s quiz
In the last 14 years, the NBA Finals gone seven games three times; there has been one sweep (2018, Warriors over Cleveland).

*****************************

Wednesday’s Den: Mid-week musings…….

13) Sad day for baseball fans Tuesday; first week of the season was cancelled by the owners, as they try to break the players’ union and rein in expenses.

This is going to be a while now; once people start losing money, then it gets personal and the impasse is more likely to stretch out. Too bad; I love baseball, but life goes on and there are lot of other things to do. The owners need to realize that.

12) I was going to post that the White Sox (-$220) were the heaviest favorite to win any of the divisions this season, but that doesn’t seem relevant now.

MLB Network should go to color bars until this dispute is resolved.

11) Just to be clear, I’m not on either side; I just want to watch ballgames. Players make a ton of money; scumweasel agents make it harder to come to an agreement. A pitcher like Alex Wood was going to make $12M this year, $12M next year. Pretty good bank for playing ball.

Owners are billionaires; I have no idea what their end game is here; do they really want to kill the golden goose, when they own the teams involved? Do they think the union is just going to fold and end the dispute? Ballplayers are competitive people; they ain’t giving up easily.

Atlanta Braves made $104M last year; it isn’t credible for owners to cry poor.

10) I’m going on vacation in three weeks, my first vacation in 2.5 years; last day of my trip was supposed to be Opening Day of baseball season. Sitting in a sportsbook and watching baseball all day is an excellent day, but that ain’t going to happen now.

I’ll watch NBA/NHL instead; there’s a ton of stuff to do in Las Vegas, but these billionaires are complete imbeciles when it comes to marketing their sport.

In any event, Tuesday was a good day for the USFL; those four games/week they’re going to play every weekend starting in mid-April will have lot of eyeballs on them, mine included.

9) TCU 74, Kansas 64:
— Horned Frogs had 19 offensive rebounds.
— Kansas lost last two games, after a 23-4 start.

8) Horizon League tournament:
— Robert Morris 77, Youngstown State 73— First upset of March Madness.
— Oakland 69, IUPUI 58— Jaguars played five guys all 40:00.
— Detroit 79, Green Bay 62— Coach’s son Davis scored 38 points.
— Ill-Chicago 80, Milwaukee 69— Flames won their last four games.

7) Atlantic Sun tournament:
— Central Arkansas 74, Stetson 73— Hatters led by 14 with 16:12 left to play.
— Fla Gulf Coast 81, North Alabama 72— Eagles won eight of last nine games.
— Lipscomb 74, North Florida 65— Game was tied at halftime.
— Kennesaw State 82, Eastern Kentucky 73— EKU led by 14 in first half.

6) Patriot League tournament:
— American 69, Holy Cross 63— Eagles are 3-0 vs HC, 3-13 vs rest of league
— Bucknell 82, Lafayette 81 OT— Bucknell was down 13 in first half.

5) Arizona 91, USC 71:
— Wildcats led 51-27 at halftime.
— Arizona made 12-25 on arc, lead Pac-12 by three games.

4) UMass fired basketball coach Matt McCall; Minutemen were 28-42 in A-14 games in his five years as coach. Tough job; A-14 doesn’t get lot of TV exposure, plus John Calipari used to coach there, so expectations are too high, just like they are at Memphis.

3) 49ers’ QB Jimmy Garoppolo is going to have his throwing shoulder operated on, won’t be able to throw for 16 weeks. Going to be hard for the 49ers to trade him and get value.

Dallas QB Dak Prescott had his left shoulder operated on, which shouldn’t impact him going forward.

2) Villanova 76, Providence 74:
— Villanova led by 14 early in second half, hung on for dear life.
— Wildcats are only team to beat Providence twice this season.
— Despite that, Friars have already clinched Big East regular season title.

1) Dayton 55, Richmond 53:
— Dayton got an alley-oop dunk on an OB under with 0:01.2 left.
— Flyers, least experienced team in country, clinches top-4 spot in A-14.

Thursday’s 6-pack

Teams who make best %age of shots inside arc:
61.4%— Belmont
60.6%— Gonzaga
58.9%— Wake Forest
58.2%— Vermont
57.6%— Oklahoma
57.3%— Winthrop

Quote of the Day
“They need to stop treating us like we’re idiots.”
Unnamed baseball player, talking about the owners/labor situation

Thursday’s quiz
Which hotel/casino in Las Vegas is shaped like a pyramid?

Wednesday’s quiz
Fred Gwynne played the judge in the classic movie, My Cousin Vinny; he is best known for being the star of The Munsters

Tuesday’s quiz
John Calipari has led UMass, Memphis and Kentucky to Final Fours.

********************************

Thursday’s Den: Doing some thinking out loud……..

13) Arkansas 77, LSU 76:
— Arkansas won last two games by total of three points.
— Razorbacks shot 57.6% inside arc.
— Teams combined to make 42-47 on foul line; good to see!!!

12) Texas A&M 87, Alabama 71:
— Aggies outscored Alabama 50-31 in second half.
— Alabama is a weird team; 47.3% of their shots are 3’s, but they’ve only made 31.3% of those 3’s (#291). Very difficult team to handicap.

11) Auburn 81, Mississippi State 68 OT:
— Auburn led by 12 at halftime.
— MSU shot 50% inside arc, 0-13 outside arc.
— Bulldogs lost eight of last 12 games.

10) Creighton 64, UConn 62:
— Creighton never trailed; they led by 16 in first half.
— Bluejays are 5-0 vs UConn the last two seasons.
— Huskies shot 6-22 on arc, 2-5 on foul line.

9) Duke won the ACC’s regular season basketball title this year, first time they’ve done that since 2006. ACC is down this year, the 6th-ranked league, their worst rating in nine years. Duke has won seven games in a row.

Speaking of Duke, they have a baseball player Chris Davis, whose dad is Rece Davis, the ESPN anchor. Chris Davis used to play baseball at Princeton; few years ago, he ruptured his spleen after a collision in the outfield, and needed two operations to recover. Scary thing.

8) Big South tournament— all four games were tied with 0:06 left in regulation
— NC A&T 78, Radford 71 OT— Aggies had lost nine of previous 11 games.
— Charleston Southern 79, NC-Asheville 78— Bucs got tap-in at buzzer for the upset.
— High Point 84, Hampton 77 OT— There were 79 foul shots in this game.
— Campbell 75, Presbyterian 72, 2OT— Camels win on Wednesday (Hump Day) Presbyterian was only 12-23 on foul line in a double overtime loss.

7) George Washington 98, Duquesne 93, 3OT:
— 7 points was biggest lead either team had the whole game.
— Senior Night at GW; four seniors started, played 3:00 each.
— Duquesne is coached by Keith Dambrot, Lebron James’ high school coach; they’ve lost 15 games in a row.

6) DePaul 91, Marquette 80:
— Depaul scored 58 points in second half.
— Marquette is 3-5 in last eight games; they’re experience team #350, very young.
— Marquette played 7 freshmen, one junior, two seniors.

5) UNLV 64, Wyoming 57:
— Rebels are 18-12, 10-7; Kevin Kruger has done a nice job in his first year at UNLV.
— UNLV star Hamilton went 3-15 from floor and they still won; impressive.
— This was Wyoming’s fourth game in eight nights; tough stretch.

4) Wednesday was the 60th anniversary of the night that Wilt Chamberlain scored 100 points for the Philadelphia Warriors against the Knicks. Wilt was freakin’ awesome.

Warriors won the game 169-147; the game was in Hershey, PA. Not a lot of defense.

Wilt played all 48:00; he 36-63 from the floor, 28-32 on foul line, had 25 rebounds. I repeat, he played all 48:00— there was no load management back then.

3) Arizona Cardinals gave GM Steve Keim, coach Kliff Kingsbury contract extensions after the Redbirds went 11-7 this past season. No word yet on QB Kyler Murray’s contract.

2) Baltimore Ravens’ QB Lamar Jackson is apparently negotiating his own contract extension with the Ravens, not using an agent. Saves you the 3% commission, but he doesn’t have a deal yet, either. Jackson will make $23.016M this coming season.

Ravens say that Jackson hasn’t shown much interest in getting a new deal done. Unusual.

1) I’ve started spending more time recently listening to the VSIN radio network on I-Heart radio, a station dedicated to sports/gambling. Lot of interesting stuff, but why in God’s name do people wager on the NFL Draft? Chances are the oddsmakers have better info than the bettor.

Couple of the VSIN guys were discussing NFL futures for 2022; how can you bet on anything before you see the schedule, which is released in April? Plus there figure to be lot of QB trades this offseason; lot of depth charts are going to look different in September than they do now.
