NCAAB bubble watch: Georgia Tech, Indiana, Tennessee

Georgia Tech is clearly on the NCAA tournament bubble, so they’ll need to finish the regular season by winning the majority of their final six games.

As the NCAA tournament rushes into view like a steaming freight train, there are several teams looking to pad their resumes over the final days of the regular season schedule. Steve Merril takes a look at a few "bubble teams" and their prospects moving forward.

Georgia Tech

The Yellow Jackets are 15-10 SU on the season as they head into their game at Miami Florida on Wednesday night. Georgia Tech is clearly on the NCAA tournament bubble, so they’ll need to finish the regular season by winning the majority of their final six games. They’ll play three games at home and three games on the road.

Georgia Tech’s toughest game will be at Notre Dame, but the rest of the schedule isn’t too rough with a pair of games against a struggling Syracuse team, and a home game against an NC State team that is in disarray. The Yellow Jackets do have impressive wins on their resume with victories over North Carolina, at VCU, Florida State, and the aforementioned Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

Indiana

Indiana began the season with a 10-2 SU record, but since then, the Hoosiers have gone just 5-9 SU over their last fourteen games. Unfortunately for Indiana, they were hit with major injuries to their better players. James Blackmon Jr. and Juwan Morgan both missed multiple games while OG Anunoby suffered a season-ending knee injury.

The Hoosiers have a difficult schedule remaining as four of their final five games are on the road. Games at Minnesota, Iowa, and Ohio State are certainly winnable, but Indiana is in poor current form, especially since they’ve lost their last two home games. The Hoosiers’ lone remaining home game is against a very good Northwestern team that they lost to by 13 points earlier this season.

Tennessee

Tennessee is now 14-12 SU on the season after losing by 25 points at Kentucky on Tuesday night. The Volunteers have now lost three of their last four games, so they are in desperate need of a turnaround over the final two weeks of the season. Tennessee will play a Saturday/Wednesday schedule the rest of the way, so they’ll have no excuses going forward.

The Volunteers have an easy schedule remaining with three of their final five games coming on their home court. Four of those games definitely fall into the winnable category; Missouri, Vanderbilt, and Alabama at home and LSU on the road. Tennessee’s toughest game will certainly be at South Carolina; a team that beat them by 10 points at home earlier this season.

Preview: Badgers (21-4) at Wolverines (16-9)
Date: February 16, 2017 7:00 PM EDT

Going into an important Big Ten showdown Thursday, No. 11 Wisconsin and Michigan enter in positions they either haven't been in all year or haven't been in much at all.

Wisconsin (21-4, 10-2 Big Ten) enters in a rare situation where it is coming off a loss after seeing an eight-game winning streak snapped Sunday with a 66-59 home setback to Northwestern.

The defeat trimmed the Badgers' lead to a half-game in the Big Ten over Maryland and Purdue, creating even more importance on its trip to Ann Arbor to face a Michigan team they defeated 17 of the last 19 times.

However, Wisconsin only won 68-64 on Jan. 17 in the first meeting of the season.

"For us, getting everybody's best shot and knowing that we are marked is good for us," Wisconsin coach Greg Gard said following the loss to Northwestern.

Wisconsin was leaking oil even before losing to Northwestern, shooting 25.3 from 3-point range and 37.4 percent overall in its prior four games, including a 70-69 overtime victory at Nebraska.

But the normally resilient Badgers couldn't find a way to beat Northwestern, and hope they can get their usually fine-tuned offense going against a Michigan team that has struggled for most of the season preventing points.

"Apparently we have to lose in order to learn the things that we already have been saying," Wisconsin senior Nigel Hayes said.

While the Badgers try to prove they can overcome adversity, the Wolverines look to show they can handle prosperity.

Michigan is coming off a true road win for the first time this season, impressively handling Indiana at Assembly Hall 75-63 on Sunday.

Following a bad 70-66 home loss to Ohio State on Feb. 4, the Wolverines (16-9, 6-6) rebounded with a blowout victory over rival Michigan State 86-57 and the win at Indiana to revive its NCAA Tournament hopes.

A win over Wisconsin would further enhance Michigan's resume.

"Our kids are focused and prosperity has not been a friend to us so far this year," Wolverines coach John Beilein said. "When we have played well, we have lost a little bit of that edge that we need. We have come out there with that aggression we need, that angry aggression to get a 'W.'"

Michigan watched plenty of film of Northwestern's win over Wisconsin, and likely will try and steal some of those same ideas to attack the Badgers.

The big question is whether Michigan will employ the same strategy of constant double teams against Wisconsin 6-foot-10 sophomore Ethan Happ, who seemed to struggle against increased defensive attention placed on him by the Wildcats.

"I think we are going to have a lot of ideas in our head and hopefully we are good in all of them and not average in all of them," Beilein said.

Happ said following the Northwestern game that if he does face double-teams, it's just a matter of making quicker and better decisions when they do come.

"We're prepared for whatever they throw at us," Happ told the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. "We're not going to change what we do offensively based on what they do."

Preview: Wildcats (23-3) at Cougars (11-14)
Date: February 16, 2017 9:00 PM EDT

No. 5 Arizona is expecting to see more zone defenses on a Washington road trip that begins Thursday night in Pullman against Washington State.

The Wildcats (23-3, 12-1 Pac-12) have a one-game conference lead over Oregon, but their offensive attack has been slowed recently by a parade of zone defenses, even by teams that don't normally play that style of defense.

Arizona is coming off a closer-than-expected home sweep. The Wildcats beat Stanford 74-67 in a game that was tied with less than two minutes to go, then recorded a 62-57 win over Cal.

"We did a really good job of attacking Cal's zone," Arizona coach Sean Miller said.

"We actually did a very good job of attacking Stanford's zone, and they're two different types. We executed against both of those zones and I think we're really on the upswing to being more comfortable as a team."

Teams will play zone against the Wildcats because of their interior size and athletic wings, trying to force them to shoot jumpers. Arizona isn't known as a high-volume 3-point shooting team, although its 38.5 percent accuracy from behind the arc is second-best in the Pac-12.

With Arizona, defenses have to pick their poison.

Even though the team's two best scorers -- 7-foot freshman Lauri Markkanen and guard Allonzo Trier -- combined for just one made basket and nine total points against Stanford, others picked up the slack.

Markkanen is in the first slump of his career. He has failed to score in double-digits in four consecutive games, dropping his average to 15.2 points per game.

"If he gets good opportunities, he'll score or get fouled," Miller said of Markkanen, who is shooting 47.2 percent from 3-point range (58 of 123) for the season. "It's up to us, and me, and our coaches to give him better opportunities."

Trier is at 13.7 points per game.

Trier scored 17 points in the first meeting against Washington State, which was his second game of the season following a 19-game NCAA suspension. Arizona won that game 79-62, even though the score was tied with under eight minutes to play.

"What this team needs to understand, you're going to get a different Arizona team," said Washington State coach Ernie Kent, whose team is 11-14 overall and 4-9 in the conference.

"You have Trier with more games under his belt, you have an Arizona team that coach Miller has challenged even more after the Oregon game (a 27-point loss), you have an Arizona team that is playing for seeding in the NCAAs; they can't afford to lose to the Washingtons.

"It's a different dynamic in this game. We have to be able to contend with it. If we're not there mentally, it's going to be a long night for us."

WSU senior forward Josh Hawkinson averages 15.7 points and 10.1 rebounds, but he had just nine points and five boards in the first meeting against Arizona. Senior post Conor Clifford scored 19 in that game.

Cougars guard Ike Iroegbu averages 12.2 points, and guard Malachi Flynn is at 10.8.

The Cougars have lost four in a row, including 81-49 at Colorado on Sunday, when WSU committed 24 turnovers.

Arizona has won 11 in a row in the series, but Miller knows not to take anything for granted.

"We've had a consistent season, no matter how you look at it," he said.

"You would like sometimes to have a little bit more margin at the end of games, but in conference play that doesn't happen a lot, especially when you're the hunted. When you're Arizona, you're going to get opponents' best shots."

Preview: Utes (17-8) at Ducks (22-4)
Date: February 16, 2017 9:00 PM EDT

EUGENE, Ore. -- Seventh-ranked Oregon will try to finish off a historic home season this week.

The Ducks (22-4, 11-2 Pac-12) are 15-0 at home as they look to complete a second straight unbeaten home schedule. Oregon went 18-0 at Matthew Knight Arena last season for just the fifth spotless season at home in school history and the first since 2001-02.

The last challenges come from Utah on Thursday night followed by Colorado on Saturday afternoon.

Oregon brings the nation's longest home winning streak, 40 in a row, into the meeting with the Utes (17-8, 8-5). The fans are flocking to the arena with an average attendance of 9,565, the school's highest figure since 1978-79.

The Ducks fell out of first place in the Pac-12 with an 82-79 loss to UCLA last Thursday, but they bounced back to defeat USC 81-70 on Saturday to improve to stay one game back of Arizona.

Oregon coach Dana Altman adjusted his lineup after using just seven players in the loss to the Bruins, when he acknowledged his team looked worn out as it blew a 13-point lead in the final 12 minutes. He went with a nine-man rotation against the Trojans and played his reserves for 55 minutes after using them for 39 minutes against the Bruins.

"I did a better job, I didn't do a good job against USC," Altman said of not using any player for more than 33 minutes Saturday. "We didn't have anyone get up to the 38- or 39-minute mark. I gave them more rest because I thought we needed it."

Altman used all nine of his available scholarship players, including 6-foot-11 junior Kavell Bigby-Williams and 6-10 junior Roman Sorkin, who did not play against UCLA.

Dillon Brooks, who leads the Ducks with 14.9 points per game, scored 21 in the win over USC, but he played just 26 minutes before fouling out. Oregon led by three when Brooks fouled out with just under four minutes to play, then outscored the Trojans 13-5 with him on the bench.

"We know Dillon is our first offensive option, but when he went out, we found a way to finish the game out," Oregon junior forward Jordan Bell said.

Bell had the best two rebounding games last weekend near his hometown of Long Beach, Calif. After grabbing a career-high 15 boards against UCLA, he added 14 against USC and was nominated for conference player of the week.

"I have been focused on rebounding," said Bell, who ranks ninth in the conference at 8.1 rebounds per game. "Obviously, we have enough scoring going on, so I don't need to worry about that."

The Ducks have five players averaging in double figures, including guard Tyler Dorsey, who had 19 in both games last week to raise his average to 13.1. Center Chris Boucher averages 12.0 points, 6.6 rebounds and 2.7 blocks per game off the bench, while senior guard Dylan Ennis averages 10.9 points per game.

Bell is scoring a career-high 10.8 points while ranking second in the conference in field-goal shooting at 61.4 percent.

Utah is tied for fifth in the conference after sweeping Washington State and Washington last week. The Utes need to move up a spot to get one of four byes in the first-round of the Pac-12 tournament.

"The focus is on Oregon, first and foremost, but that's something that's being talked about a little bit -- trying to earn a first-round bye," Utah coach Larry Krystkowiak told the Salt Lake Tribune. "Even by the end of this weekend, we'll probably have a better idea if that's an attainable goal or not. Hopefully it is."

Junior forward Kyle Kuzma leads the team with averages of 15.7 points and 10.2 rebounds per game, while junior David Collette is second at 14.6 points and 5.1 rebounds. Senior guard Lorenzo Bonam is averaging 13.0 points and 3.0 assists, while freshman Devon Daniels scores 10.6 points per game.

The Utes likely need a few victories to play their way into the NCAA Tournament, and a win over a top-10 team would be a good start. The Ducks beat Utah 73-67 last month in Salt Lake City.

Preview: Dons (18-9) at Bulldogs (26-0)
Date: February 16, 2017 9:00 PM EDT

With top-ranked Gonzaga knifing through the West Coast Conference to the tune of winning by 26.1 points a game, the Bulldogs' greatest challenge might be answering the naysayers.

Gonzaga (26-0, 14-0 WCC) hosts San Francisco on Thursday night in Spokane, Wash. The Bulldogs defeated the Dons 95-80 last month by notching their 10th straight win in the series.

One WCC team that figured to have the best opportunity to upset Gonzaga -- then-No. 20 St. Mary's -- lost at home 64-54 to coach Mark Few's team last week. The victory provided an opportunity for Gonzaga to respond to some who question its legitimacy because of its dominance of the WCC.

"I want it bad, I want the national championship bad, to kind of put to rest all the naysayers," said junior guard Nigel Williams-Goss, who leads the Bulldogs in scoring (15.7 points per game) and assists (4.6).

History is not on Gonzaga's side with that statement. Despite 18 consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament, the Bulldogs have never advanced beyond the Elite Eight. Loyola Marymount fans reminded them last week that the 2013 team that reached No. 1 in the AP Top 25 was ousted in the NCAAs in the Round of 32 by Wichita State.

"That's all you hear, even out here (Loyola Marymount) fans were chanting, 'Round of 32,'" Williams-Goss said. "You've got to get over the hump. I'd love to be part of the group to do it."

Gonzaga has four regular-season games remaining, beginning with the matchup against San Francisco, in its attempt to become the first team to go undefeated in the regular season since Kentucky in 2015.

Williams-Goss scored 36 points in the first meeting with the Dons, making 12 of 15 shots from the field with 11 rebounds and six assists.

Jordan Rathino scored 20 points for San Francisco, which shot only 24.1 percent (7 of 29) from 3-point range in that game in which Gonzaga was ranked No. 5.

The Dons (18-9, 8-6) are coming off a 68-52 loss against visiting BYU a week after the Bulldogs handled the Cougars 85-75 at Provo, Utah.

First-year coach Kyle Smith's team endured the worst shooting game of the season against BYU, missing 17 of its first 19 shots from the field and shooting 24.7 percent in the game.

"We couldn't get anything to fall," Smith said. "We got plenty of good looks but when you get off to a slow start like we did it sometimes snowballs on you."

Thursday's game marks the first time San Francisco has faced the No. 1 team in the nation since Jan. 18, 1979, when the Dons lost at top-ranked Notre Dame 86-69. San Francisco is 0-3 against top-ranked teams.

"They're undefeated for a reason," Smith said of Gonzaga. "They flex their muscle a little bit with their transition offense and ability to get the ball inside, whether it is off the drive or in the post."

In addition to Williams-Goss's production, California transfer Jordan Mathews, son of former San Francisco coach Phil Mathews, finished with 16 points in the previous meeting with the Dons.

Freshman reserve post player Killian Tillie (12 points) and senior center Przernek Karnowski (10) also scored in double figures for Gonzaga

Preview: Lions (12-13) at Gaels (22-3)
Date: February 16, 2017 11:00 PM EDT

Although Saint Mary's chance of sharing the West Coast Conference regular-season title for the second consecutive season virtually vanished when it lost to Gonzaga on Saturday, the Gaels still have a major goal that is achievable.

That goal is to earn an NCAA Tournament berth, and that will be the motivation when the Gaels host Loyola Marymount (12-13, 5-9 WCC) on Thursday at McKeon Pavilion.

You might think that with a No. 22 ranking and two of its three losses to No. 1 Gonzaga, Saint Mary's (22-3, 12-2) would be practically assured of the NCAA Tournament berth. But Saint Mary's coach Randy Bennett speaks from experience when he notes that nothing is certain.

"It all depends how we finish," he said after the 74-64 loss to Gonzaga. "We have two weeks of games, four regular-season games and then the conference tournament. There's a body of work there. It sounds crazy, but it's too early to tell. It's such a fine line at this level. We were at 27-4 last year and lost in the conference championship."

The Gaels were indeed 27-4 heading into the championship game of the WCC tournament against Gonzaga last season. Bennett also noted that the Gaels were ranked at the time (in the coaches poll, not in the Associated Press poll).

But Saint Mary's, which tied Gonzaga for the regular-season title last season, lost that tournament championship game to Gonzaga, and was not invited to the NCAA tournament.

"I learned my lesson on that one," Bennett said.

Saint Mary's would seem to be in better shape for an NCAA bid this season. The Gaels own a road win over Dayton and have an RPI ranking of 20 as of Wednesday morning. However, they had a decent RPI of 37 on Selection Sunday last season and wound up in the NIT.

It means Saint Mary's cannot have a misstep against a team like Loyola Marymount, especially with a challenging road game against BYU looming on Saturday.

Saint Mary's has defeated Loyola Marymount 10 consecutive times and 21 times in the past 22 meetings. The Gaels struggled to beat the Lions in Los Angeles back on Dec. 29, leading by just a point with 11 minutes left before stretching it out for a 72-60 victory.

The Lions have an RPI ranking of 170, but they are coming off a 66-60 home victory over Portland, forcing the Pilots into 30 turnovers in the process.

"That was our best defense effort this year, by far," said Loyola Marymount coach Mike Dunlap said.. "You are not going to see too many games where you force a team into 30 turnovers. I was very proud of our defense effort from the entire roster. Everyone contributed today."

The Lions were far from perfect offensively, shooting just 37.9 percent and committing 21 turnovers

"It wasn't a pretty game from an offensive standpoint, but it was good enough to get the win," Dunlap said. "We had everyone contribute to the win and this is the style of play we want to bring to LMU. Lots of running and tough defense."

Brandon Brown, who leads the Lions in scoring at 13.3 points per game, and Buay Tuach, who averages 12.1 points, scored 18 points apiece against Portland.

Two day earlier, Loyola Marymount had been crushed by Gonzaga, which took a 22-point lead at halftime on its way to a 90-60 victory.

"They make you pay for the mistakes," Dunlap said. "They are a very good running team and that is where a lot of our fouls came from."

No one knows that better than Saint Mary's what can happen against Gonzaga. The Gaels shot just 37.9 percent in the second half against the Bulldogs after shooting a season-low 30.6 percent in a 51-41 victory over Portland two days earlier.

Jock Landale, who leads the Gaels in scoring at 17.0 points per game, had 24 points against Gonzaga, but he was the only Saint Mary's player to reach double figures. Calvin Hermanson, second on the team in scoring at 12.6 points, and Emmett Naar, who is third at 9.9, combined for just 12 points on 5-of-18 shooting as the Bulldogs dominated the paint.

"We can beat this team, but we can't have a B game or a C game," Bennett said. "They have a lot to do with the kind of game you have, but we're going to have to have an A game. Hopefully we'll get another chance at it. We'll have to do better job on them inside than we did tonight."

Thursday's First Four
February 16, 2017

A look at the day's top four college basketball matchups, ranked in order of most attractive.

THURSDAY, FEB. 16

Matchup Records Skinny Projection

Utah
Overall: 17-8 SU, 12-10 ATS
Pac-12: 8-5 SU, 8-4-1 ATS
Totals: 12-11-1 O/U

Oregon
Overall: 22-4 SU, 15-10 ATS
Pac-12: 11-2 SU, 11-2 ATS
Totals: 10-15 O/U

Utah at Oregon, 9 p.m. ET, ESPN

The Ducks open the week one game behind Arizona in the Pac-12 standings and own the head-to-head tiebreaker over the 'Cats, giving them a chance to finish as the league's champ and top seed for the conference tournament if they can remain unscathed over the final five games and get a little help along the way. The part of the equation that Dana Altman's team can control begins with a tough home dates against the Utes, who were awfully feisty in a 73-67 Oregon win in Salt Lake City on Jan. 21. Although Utah is an NCAA Tournament bubble team, it is clearly one of the top six teams in a league that could receive exactly that many bids. That will be up to how the Utes finish. Winning at Oregon here would be a major score, but they haven't beaten the Ducks in eight consecutive games and haven't won in Eugene since 1951. Ducks star guard Dillon Brooks has averaged 20.2 points in six career wins over the Utes, returning from a foot injury to score 19 points and deny the Utes an upset in the previous matchup. Utah did win the rebounding battle 33-28 and have the horses to challenge Oregon up front in Kyle Kuzma and David Collette. Oregon center Chris Boucher, whose mom will be watching him play for the first time ever since this will be the final week of their home careers for the Ducks seniors. Oregon has won 40 consecutive games at Matthew Knight Arena. The Ducks, who have won 11 of the last 12 in the series. The under has prvailed in five of the last seven Ducks games.

Oregon 76
Utah 71

Wisconsin
Overall: 21-4 SU, 10-11 ATS
Big Ten: 10-2 SU, 5-7 ATS
Totals: 10-10-1 O/U

Michigan
Overall: 16-9 SU, 9-13 ATS
Big Ten: 6-6 SU, 5-7 ATS
Totals: 14-8 O/U

Wisconsin at Michigan, 7 p.m. ET, ESPN

After losing to Northwestern at home on Sunday night, the Badgers aim to rebound in order to avoid slipping into a first-place tie with Purdue and Maryland atop the Big Ten. Meanwhile, the Wolverines are attempting to climb over .500 in league play for the third time this season and are hoping that the charm cliche plays since they've failed the first two times. Oddsmakers have made Michigan a 1-point home favorite, but this is basically a pick'em. Wisconsin failed to cover in the 68-64 home win on Jan. 17, hanging on as 10-point 'chalk.' Including that game, the Badgers are 2-6 against the number over the last eight, struggling offensively since they've only reached the 70-point mark once in the last five outings. Unless a late swing pushes them into a favorite's role, this will mark only the third time all season where they haven't giving points and are 0-2 SU and ATS in that situation, suffering double-digit losses at North Carolina and Purdue. Michigan is playing its best ball of the season, coming off its first road victory (75-63 at Indiana). Last time out at Crisler Arena, the Wolverines thrilled their fans with an 86-57 rout of Michigan State, the biggest win in that rivalry since 1948. They hit 10-of-21 3-pointers in that game, including eight of their first 12. Michigan shot 10-for-21 from beyond the arc in the loss in Madison as well, a driving force in leading by six points with 6:00 to go. Clearly, that weapon will play a major role here. The Wolverines were unhappy with all the foul trouble they got into in the first meeting since they're among the national leaders in not being whistled, so how the game is officiated here will also play a major role. Wisconsin point guard Bronson Koenig, who scored a team-high 16 points in the January win, is considered a game-time decision after being held out of practice the last two days due to a calf strain. It will be critical to have him out there against Michigan counterpart Derrick Walton, who has averaged 23 points, 6.2 rebounds and 5 assists over the last five games, shooting 56 percent. If Koenig can't go, freshman D'Mitrik Trice, would be in line for more minutes. Wisconsin has won 17 of 19 games in this series.

San Francisco
Overall: 18-9 SU, 13-10 ATS
West Coast: 8-6 SU, 8-6 ATS
Totals: 8-15 O/U

Gonzaga
Overall: 26-0 SU, 18-4 ATS
West Coast: 14-0 SU, 11-2-1 ATS
Totals: 12-11 O/U
San Francisco at Gonzaga, 9 p.m. ET, ROOT

After defeating Saint Mary's in Moraga on Saturday, the Bulldogs cleared the biggest obstacle that would keep them from entering the NCAA Tournament unscathed. Although they may see the Gaels again in a WCC Tournament final, that game will be played at Orleans Arena in Vegas, not a raucous tiny gym where everyone is against you. Gonzaga will play only one more true road game (Feb. 23, at San Diego), but do have two of the league's top teams coming into Spokane. The season finale will be played against talented third-place BYU, while the other game against an opponent with a winning record comes tonight against the Dons, who come in tied for fourth alongside Santa Clara. First-year head coach Kyle Smith arrived after an impressive stint at Columbia and has already surpassed USF's win total in three of the last four seasons, posting the school's best record through 27 games since 2000. Wins over Utah and Illinois State in Hawai'i highlight its resume, but San Francisco is 0-5 against the West Coast Conference's "Big Three," losing each game by at least 10 points. This will be its last crack at an upset. In a 95-80 home loss on Jan. 5, the Dons did post the highest-scoring output Gonzaga has surrendered all season despite shooting just 7-for-29 from the field and 13-for-21 from the free-throw line. Zags point guard Nigel Williams-Goss got wherever he wanted, fighting off a flu bug to shoot 12-for-15 from the field and 9-for-9 from the line, finishing with 36 points, 11 rebounds and six assists. For the game, the Bulldogs shot 61 percent and outrebounded USF 39-23. Freshman guard Jordan Ratinho led the Dons with a season-high 20 points but has only scored in double-figures once in an 11-game span since that outburst. Gonzaga is 33-4 against USF under Mark Few, winning 10 straight. The Dons have held nine straight opponents under 70 points. As such, 10 of their last 11 games have gone under the posted total, a run that began after giving up 95 against the Zags.

Gonzaga 86

Memphis
Overall: 18-8 SU, 8-12 ATS
American: 8-5 SU, 4-8-1 ATS
Totals: 9-12 O/U

UConn
Overall: 12-12 SU, 8-13 ATS
American: 7-5 SU, 5-7 ATS
Totals: 11-9 O/U

Memphis at UConn, 9 p.m. ET, ESPN2

A victory would give the Huskies a winning record for the first time all season. Although there are no illusions that UConn can reach the NCAA Tournament unless it runs the table in the conference tournament, defeating Memphis would also secure its first three-game winning streak of a season that was cursed early on due to multiple season-ending injuries. The Tigers do harbor at-large aspriations, but are certainly on the outside looking in at the moment, running fourth in an AAC that isn't likely to be awarded three bids unless a shock champ claims the automatic bid. Behind SMU and Cincinnati, Houston, Memphis and UCF have put together strong seasons, but all appear to be NIT teams at best barring something unforeseen. Tubby Smith's team does have road games at the Mustangs and Bearcats remaining that could significantly boost their resume, but they'll be decisive underdogs in those games. Here, the Tigers opened as 4.5-point 'dogs against a UConn team it handled 70-61 on Jan. 5. Memphis hasn't lost consecutive games all season, but comes off a disappointing 74-62 loss to Temple, only its second loss as a home favorite. Its last road game came on Feb. 4 in Orlando, where UCF ran away for a 72-57 win. Memphis forced 18 turnovers to win the first matchup, scoring 16 fast-break points. The Huskies want to limit any easy baskets and force them to work in the halfcourt, where they have an advantage due to 7-footer Amida Brimah patrolling the paint. Tigers forward Dedric Lawson is averaging 19.8 points and 10.3 rebounds, but may find it difficult to match his usual production with Brimah lurking. UConn needs him to stay out of foul trouble. Over the past three games, the Huskies are 34-for-55 from 3-point range, a drastic change from what they've shown for most of the season. They shot 4-for-20 from beyond the arc in the loss at Memphis. Hot shooting has helped eight of the last nine games involving UConn to wind up going over the posted total, which includes a streak of six in a row entering this one. The Jan. 5 meeting topped 127.5.

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) Joel Berry II scored 18 points to help No. 10 North Carolina beat rival North Carolina State 97-73 on Wednesday night to stay alone in first place in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Luke Maye added a career-high 13 points for the Tar Heels (22-5, 10-3), who shot 56 percent while dominating both the paint and the glass to blow out the Wolfpack for the second time in a month. UNC had won the first meeting 107-56 for the second-worst loss in N.C. State's history.

UNC finished with a 60-22 edge in points in the paint and a 41-25 rebounding advantage that led to a 27-13 edge in second-chance points.

Freshman Dennis Smith Jr. scored 27 points but little else went right for the Wolfpack (14-13, 3-11), who continued their accelerating descent that has led to growing uncertainty about the future of sixth-year coach Mark Gottfried.

No. 12 DUKE 65, No. 14 VIRGINIA 55

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) - Jayson Tatum scored 21 of his 28 points in the second half and Duke pulled away late for its sixth victory in a row.

Tatum hit three 3-pointers as the shot clock approached 0:00 in the second half, all coming after the Cavaliers pulled within 43-42.

Luke Kennard added 16 points for the Blue Devils (21-5, 9-4 Atlantic Coast Conference), who are tied for second in the league with Florida State and Louisville. All three are a game behind No. 10 North Carolina.

London Perrantes scored 14 points to lead Virginia (18-7, 8-5) and Ty Jerome had 13.

---

No. 18 CINCINNATI 68, SOUTH FLORIDA 54

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Kevin Johnson scored 14 points and Gary Clark had 13 points and 14 rebounds as Cincinnati bounced back from its first loss in two months.

The Bearcats (23-2, 12-1 American) shrugged off last Sunday's nine-point loss to SMU and surpassed their victory total for last season. Kyle Washington had 13 points and nine rebounds, while Jacob Evans overcame early foul trouble to finish with 10 points.

USF (7-18, 1-13) snapped a 12-game losing streak last weekend and found a way to keep it relatively close until Cincinnati began the second half on an 11-2 run to build its lead to 41-24. Geno Thorpe led the Bulls with 19 points.

---

No. 19 SMU 80, TULANE 75

DALLAS (AP) - Semi Ojeleye scored 16 of his 18 points in the second half, including consecutive 3-pointers in the SMU run that finally put the Mustangs ahead.

With the rally from a 15-point halftime deficit, SMU (23-4, 13-1 American) extended its home winning streak to 20 games in a row, including all 16 this season. The AAC-leading Mustangs have a nine-game winning streak and have won 19 of their last 20 games overall

Jarrey Foster had 19 points, including three consecutive dunks in one stretch for SMU. Ben Moore had 15 points with 13 rebounds, while Shake Milton and Sterling Brown each had 13 points.

Cameron Reynolds had 23 points for Tulane (4-21, 1-12).

---

SETON HALL 87, No. 20 CREIGHTON 81

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - Khadeen Carrington tallied the final 10 points of his career-high 41 in the closing minute and Seton Hall made a big stride toward the NCAA Tournament.

Desi Rodriguez had 18 points and big man Angel Delgado got going in second half and added 17 points and 17 rebounds as the Pirates (16-9, 6-7 Big East) opened a crucial three-game home stand with a big win.

Marcus Foster had 23 points, six rebounds and six assists for Creighton (21-5, 8-5), which lost for only the second time on the road this season. Justin Patton added 15 points and Khyri Thomas and Cole Huff had 13 apiece for the Bluejays.

---

ARKANSAS 83, No. 21 SOUTH CAROLINA 76

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Jaylen Barford tied his career high with 23 points and Arkansas got its first road win over a ranked opponent in almost three years.

Dusty Hannahs added 20 points for the Razorbacks (19-7, 8-5 Southeastern Conference) including nine straight after the Gamecocks had cut a 10-point deficit to 55-54 with less than 11 minutes remaining to restore the margin. South Carolina (20-6, 10-3) closed to 77-76 on PJ Dozier's layin with 1:04 to go. But Manuale Watkins hit a running jumper that rattled home with 29.3 seconds left as the shot clock sounded.

Moses Kingsley blocked Sindarius Thornwell's shot and Arkansas held on.

Thornwell had 27 points for the Gamecocks.

---

No. 23 MARYLAND 74, NORTHWESTERN 64

EVANSTON, Ill. (AP) - Melo Trimble scored a career-high 32 points on 12-for-17 shooting, and Maryland strengthened its position in the Big Ten.

Trimble repeatedly came up with big plays for the Terrapins (22-4, 10-3), driving inside for layups or connecting from long range. The junior guard made four of Maryland's eight 3-pointers and also contributed four rebounds.

Anthony Cowan added 13 points and Damonte Dodd had 12 as Maryland moved into a tie with Purdue for second in the conference, just a half-game behind Wisconsin. The Terrapins visit the Badgers on Sunday.

Freshman Isiah Brown led Northwestern (19-7, 8-5) with a career-high 19 points.

---

No. 24 BUTLER 110, ST. JOHN'S 86

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Avery Woodson scored a season-high 20 points and Andrew Chrabascz also had 20 for Butler.

The Bulldogs (20-6, 9-5 Big East) ended a two-game home losing streak.

Federico Mussini had 20 points to lead the Red Storm (12-15, 6-8), who never had a chance after giving up the first seven points of the game.

The Bulldogs extended the lead to 21-7 and then used a 7-0 run to make it 39-25. The Bulldogs closed out their highest scoring first of the half season with a 54-35 lead.

Butler's nine 3-pointers in the first half matched St. John's total field goals.

Friday’s six-pack

Six of the best minor league prospects for the Washington Nationals:

1) Victor Robles, OF— Hit .306 in three minor league seasons; won’t be 20 until May.

2) Erick Fedde, P— UNLV alum was 2-1, 3.99 in five AA starts; will start there this year.

4) Wilmer Difo, 2B/SS— Has hit .261 in 69 big league AB’s the last two years.

9) Pedro Severino, C— Supposedly an excellent defensive catcher.

11) Rafael Bautista, OF— Hit .282 in his first season in AA last year.

13) AJ Cole, P— 1-2, 5.39 in 11 big league games (nine starts).

******************************

Friday’s List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here…….

13) NC State fired basketball coach Matt Gottfried Thursday; he is 122-82 in Raleigh, 47-55 in ACC games (only 8-24 the last two years). State made the NCAA’s in Gottfried’s first four seasons in Raleigh, but will miss this year for second year in a row, so decision-makers pulled the plug.

This is the same school that shoved Herb Sendek out the door in 2006 after he made the NCAA’s five years in a row, going 46-34 in ACC games. They’re bleeping clueless. NC State ain’t Duke or UCLA.

Until Mike Krzyzewski retires, NC State is a bad job, third-fiddle at best on Tobacco Road. Now Wake Forest has passed the Wolfpack. I will be curious to see who they hire.

12) Vinny Del Negro? They went the alumni/NBA route with Sidney Lowe and that was very bad (25-55 in ACC games, no NCAA’s in five years). Does that hurts Vinny here?

My guess is they go hard after Dayton’s Archie Miller; I’m not sure being a smaller fish in a very big pond is better than being a big fish in a smaller (A-14) pond.

11) Quote of the Day, #2, from an unnamed college basketball coach on the NC State job, from Gary Parrish’s article on CBSSports.com:

“I wouldn’t touch that job. If making four NCAA Tournaments [in six years] gets you fired midseason [in your sixth year], it’s not a good job to take if you already have a good job.”

Archie Miller already has a good job, maybe a very good one.

10) NC-Wilmington 66, Northeastern 65- Seahawks led by 20 at the half, hung on for the win; they do not have the same quality depth they had last year. This was a brickfest; teams made a combined 9-42 on the arc. Huskies won a game Saturday when they were down 16 at the half, almost did it again here.

9) Delaware 68, Drexel 67— Two weeks ago, Blue Hens were 2-10 in the CAA; since then, they won three games in a row by a total of four points. Delaware was +11 (20-9) in turnovers in this game and won by only one. Drexel was 11-24 on arc, Blue Hens were 8-16 on foul line.

8) Michigan 64, Wisconsin 58— Badgers drop into a 3-way tie for first in the Big 14. Michigan has now won three games in a row, as they try and get off the bubble.

7) Miami Dolphins cut four players Thursday, knocking $20,165,000 off their ’17 cap number. OT Branden Albert is going to get gobbled up by some blocking-hungry team.

6) Bulls 104, Celtics 103— Jimmy Butler made two foul shots with 0:00.9 left on a (really) dicey foul call on a jump shot.

5) Bad Beats of the Night: Omaha 83, Oral Roberts (+6) 76 OT— You get six points and you’re in OT, you expect to cover.

Charleston 76, Hofstra (+2) 72– Not sure exactly what happened, but Hofstra’s coach got a technical foul with 0:01 left when game was 74-72 and was going to be a push. From play/play sheet, looks like Charleston blocked a 3-pointer and Hofstra wanted a foul called.

4) Santa Clara 106, Pepperdine 55- Broncos are only 15-13, but led 54-19 at the half. Losses like this get coaches fired.

Ironic that on the day Gottfried got fired, Sendek’s newest team won by 51.

3) Colorado 60, Oregon State 52— Buffaloes won six of last seven games after starting out 0-7 in the Pac-12. Been a rough year for the injury-plagued Beavers.

2) UConn 63, Memphis 62— Breakaway dunk at buzzer by UConn was waved off, so Memphis loses/covers in a game they led by 14 at the half.

1— Sacramento State 67, Montana 65— 10-14 Hornets sweep Montana; Sac State has covered nine of its last 11 games.

The Big Game (Basketball Version)

California is likely headed back to the NCAA Tournament as the Golden Bears own an 18-7 record overall and 9-4 mark inside the Pac-12 conference. The Golden Bears make the short trip to Palo Alto to face Stanford, who has lost five of its last six contests. These rivals are going in different directions from an ATS standpoint of late as Cal has covered four of its last five, while Stanford has compiled a 2-4 ATS record in its past six contests.

Stanford had owned Cal from 2014 through 2016 by capturing four straight meetings, but the Golden Bears have rebounded with home victories in the last two matchups. Cal cruised past Stanford, 66-55 as eight-point favorites last month, but the Cardinal has won each of the last two matchups in Palo Alto. The Cardinal is 3-5 ATS as an underdog in Pac-12 play, but upset Utah as a home ‘dog earlier this month, 81-75.

Crawling Back

Richmond is in the mix for the Atlantic 10 title, but the Spiders were dealt a huge blow in Tuesday’s 93-70 loss at George Mason. The Spiders have lost consecutive games only twice this season as Richmond hosts VCU in a critical conference battle. Richmond owns a perfect 5-0 record in home conference play, while putting together a 3-0-1 ATS mark in those contests.

VCU held off Richmond in its last matchup, 81-74 on February 1, but the Spiders took home the money as 10-point underdogs. The Rams are riding a seven-game winning streak, but VCU has cashed only three times during this hot stretch. This series has belonged to VCU, who has won each of the past four meetings, including a 94-89 overtime decision at the Robins Center last season.

Midterm Exams

The Ivy League is transitioning into the second half of conference play as all eight teams are in action on Friday. Princeton (8-0) and Yale (6-2) are the top two teams in the Ivy as these squads meet up in New Haven in a pick-em spot. The Tigers knocked off the Bulldogs in their previous matchup in New Jersey last month, 66-58, but Princeton has since compiled a 1-4 ATS record. Yale looks to bounce back after falling to rival Harvard last weekend, as the Bulldogs have won 11 of their past 12 home conference games.

Speaking of Harvard, the Crimson return home following a pair of huge road victories at Brown and Yale last weekend. Harvard has covered four consecutive contests as it hosts Columbia, looking to avenge a 65-62 defeat in New York City last month as 2 ½-point road favorites. The Lions remain on the highway following road losses at Penn and Princeton last weekend, as Columbia has covered in two of three away games in Ivy action.

Dartmouth and Cornell are two of the bottom-feeders this season in the Ivy, as each squad owns a 2-6 conference record. In this battle of colors, the Big Green has won two of their past three games and covered four consecutive contests. The Big Red has lost four straight games since handling Dartmouth at home on January 28 in a 13-point win, as the two teams have split the last eight meetings.

Both Penn and Brown have each compiled 2-6 conference marks, but the Quakers have turned it around by beating Columbia and Cornell last weekend. The Bears have lost three straight games, but Brown knocked off Penn as 9 ½-point underdogs last month, 82-70. Brown has covered seven consecutive meetings with Penn, including each of the past three home matchups.

Over the Horizon

Valparaiso and Oakland are the top two squads in the Horizon League as both teams are playing well at the moment. The Crusaders have won 10 of their last 11 games (7-4 ATS), while the Golden Grizzlies are riding a four-game winning streak (2-2 ATS). Oakland has cashed in seven of the previous eight matchups with Valpo, including a 78-66 road victory in January as three-point underdogs. The two teams meet in Oakland as the Grizzlies are 0-4 ATS in their last four attempts as a home favorite.

Illinois-Chicago began Horizon play at 4-2, but the Flames have dropped five of the past seven games. UIC travels to Detroit to face a Titans’ squad that has alternated wins and losses in each of the previous five contests, coming off an 89-80 home defeat last Friday to Oakland. The Flames cruised past the Titans in the last matchup in January, 78-64 as seven-point favorites, while UIC has cashed in four of five Horizon road contests.

Metro Madness

Rider knocked off Canisius in its last meeting, 72-66 in late January as six-point road underdogs. The two MAAC rivals meet in Lawrenceville as Rider has compiled a 4-6-1 ATS record in the last 11 conference games following a 4-1 ATS start. The Golden Griffins are 3-1 SU/ATS in the past four games, while winning back-to-back road contests at Siena and St. Peter’s, but are 0-2 ATS as an away conference favorite.

Marist looks to snap an eight-game losing streak as the Red Foxes host Iona. The Gaels have dropped two of three since a six-game winning streak, including close losses to Siena and Canisius. Iona has captured seven consecutive matchups with Marist, including a 93-80 home victory as 13-point favorites on New Year’s Eve.

Fairfield and Quinnipiac are in the middle of the pack of the MAAC, as these teams are hooking up for the second time in less than two weeks. The Bobcats edged the Stags, 73-71 as four-point road underdogs in their last meeting, as the road team has won six consecutive matchups. Quinnipiac has won five of its past seven MAAC home contests, including underdog victories over Iona and Canisius.

Saturday’s six-pack

Six of the best minor league prospects for the Toronto Blue Jays:

1) Vladimir Guerrero Jr, 3B— He turns 18 next month. Damn good bloodlines.

3) Lourdes Gurriel, OF/3B— His brother played for the Astros last year.

9) Bo Bichette, 2B/SS— His father Dante was a pretty good big leaguer.

11) Justin Maese, P— Was 9-6, 2.36 in his first two minor league seasons.

12) Max Pentecost, C/1B— Has had two elbow operations since signing for $2.9M.

25) Cavan Biggio, 2B— Not as a good a prospect as his Hall of Famer dad.

**************************

Saturday’s List of 13: Random stuff on a winter day…….

13) Tom House was in the major leagues for 8 years, with the Braves, Red Sox, Mariners; he was 29-23, 3.79 in 289 games (21 starts, 33 saves). He was best known for catching Hank Aaron’s 715th home run in the Atlanta bullpen in 1974. Now he is best known for something else.

House is a throwing guru, as in, the mechanics of throwing a ball, whether it be a baseball or a football. He was the Rangers’ pitching coach in Texas in the 1980’s; Nolan Ryan mentioned him in his Hall of Fame acceptance speech. Nowadays, House does work with some NFL QB’s.

Drew Brees, Carson Palmer, Tom Brady have all worked with House; now Jared Goff is working with him too, on ways to strengthen the shoulder and improve throwing mechanics. He’s had an interesting career; he was also USC’s pithing coach for a few years and is a PhD. Smart guy.

12) Turns out Mark Gottfried gets $2.28M to leave NC State with four years left on his contract, so while I think he got a raw deal, he’ll be back on TV next year with a healthy bank account, so good for him. Gottfried was very good on TV before he got the Wolfpack job.

11) Michigan coach John Beilein is the only one of 351 Division I basketball coaches who has never been an assistant coach, at any level.

Beilien’s son Patrick is following the same path; he is the coach at D-II LeMoyne in Syracuse at age 33, where his father was once the coach, from 1983-1992.

10) Went to an America East game the other night; Md-Baltimore County at Albany. Coach of UMBC is Ryan Odom, son of former Wake Forest/South Carolina coach Dave Odom.

Ryan Odom has the Retrievers at 16-11, after they were 7-25 LY. He coached at Lenior-Rhyne (D-II) last year, improving them from eight wins to 20+, so he is on a fast track to a bigger league fairly soon. Two years ago, Odom was the interim coach of Charlotte in C-USA after the head coach there became ill.

9) It was 66 in Chicago Friday, the 4th-warmest Jan-Feb Chicago day in recorded history. Out in Los Angeles, they were getting 3-4 inches of rain. Odd weather. As long as i don’t have to brush snow off my satellite dish again this winter, I’ll be happy.

8) This is the last year of Joe Girardi’s career as manager in the Bronx. If you root for that team, aren’t you concerned? Girardi seems like a good manager; most of the problems they’ve had the last few years seem to be front office’s problems, as in, the roster got real old.

Fact is, they’ve won only one world title since 2000 and spent a freakin’ fortune.

7) Jerry DiPoto became the Mariners’ GM in September, 2015; only 8 of the players who were on the 40-man roster then are still there.

6) Former NBA star Cedric Ceballos now does some Mountain West games on CBS Sports Network; he isn’t bad and has a tremendous, deep voice.

5) 34-year old Vince Young may be aiming for a football comeback; rumors have him headed to the Saskatchewan Roughriders in the CFL. Young last played for the Eagles, in 2011.

4) Friday was Michael Jordan’s 54th birthday, Jim Brown’s 81st. Pretty strong day to have a birthday.

3) Portland State is 12-12 this season, 5-8 in big Sky games, 1-6 in their last seven. A closer look shows that four of their last five losses came in OT, including a triple OT loss at Eastern Washington. Vikings have an experienced team, so you’d think they’d win some of those close games.

Elsewhere in the Big Sky, Montana State is 6-2 in its last eight games- they’ve won their last four home games- their last three home wins have all come in overtime.

2) Quote of the Day, part 2: “This is not even a conspiracy theory. The Earth is flat.” Kyrie Irving of the Cavaliers— maybe he learned that in his six months at Duke. Seriously, Irving thinks the world is flat.

1— RIP William James Myers, 79, better known as George the Animal Steele, a pro wrestler who entertained fans by eating the turnbuckle with his green tongue sticking out. Trust me on this, he was fun to watch, in a creepy kind of way. RIP, sir.
