NCAAB Game of the Day: Virginia at Virginia Tech
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Cavaliers are coming off a big win over Louisville, but can they cover the 7-point road chalk against the rival Hokies.

Virginia Cavaliers at Virginia Tech Hokies (+7, 132.5)

Sandwiched between a big win over Louisville and a heavyweight fight versus Duke, No. 13 Virginia will need little help getting up for its visit to in-state rival Virginia Tech in the Commonwealth Clash on Sunday. The Cavaliers have owned the series of late, winning nine of the last 10 games, including a 71-48 thrashing at home on Feb. 1.

"Obviously, we know that (Cassell Coliseum) is crazy," Virginia forward Isaiah Wilkins told reporters, "because every time we go in there, we're in a close game, whether we come out on top or we lose. (Virginia coach Tony Bennett will) bring that up for sure, but it's just another game we've got to be locked in for. We've just got to come out with some fire and really be ready to play and be locked in for 40 minutes." Wilkins scored a career-best 15 points and grabbed a game-high nine rebounds in the first contest, while junior guard Devon Hall added a career-high 17 points as Virginia posted its largest margin of victory in the series since a 25-point win in 1991. On Monday, the Cavaliers used a 22-5 spurt early in the second half to wipe out a two-point halftime deficit and defeated an undermanned fourth-ranked Louisville squad 71-55. After getting pounded by the Cavaliers, being held to a season low in points while shooting 35.7 percent in the game, Virginia Tech dropped a 74-68 decision at Miami on Wednesday.

TV: 6:30 p.m. ET, ESPNU

LINE HISTORY: Virginia opened this matchup versus its in-state rival favored by a touchdown and the line has yet to move off of that number. The total hit the board at 132.5. Check out the complete line history here.

INJURY REPORT: No injuries to report.

ABOUT VIRGINIA (18-5, 14-7 ATS, 7-13-1 O/U): Senior guard London Perrantes scored 18 points and Wilkins added his first career double-double with 13 points, 11 rebounds and five blocks Monday night against the Cardinals. Perrantes leads Virginia in scoring at 12.2 points per game, marking the lowest scoring average to lead any team in a single season (Malcolm Brogdon 12.7 in 2013-14). Wilkins (7.7 points) leads the team in rebounding (6.1 per game), blocked shots (33) and steals (27).

ABOUT VIRGINIA TECH (16-7, 9-10 ATS, 9-10 O/U): Sophomore guard Justin Robinson led five players in double figures with 15 points, but the Hokies fell behind by as many as 17 in the second half in the loss to the Hurricanes. Senior forward Zach LeDay, who had 10 points and 10 rebounds against Miami, leads the team in scoring (15.7 points), is second in rebounds (6.8) and has scored in double figures in 21 of 22 games this season. Four others average double figures, including 6-6 sophomore Chris Clarke, who produces 11.7 points, a team-high 7.3 rebounds and 3.3 assists while shooting 59.3 percent from the floor.

TRENDS:

* Virginia is 4-1 ATS in its last five road games.
* Virginia Tech is 16-6 ATS in its last 22 home games.
* Home team is 7-1 ATS in the last eight meetings.
* Under is 5-1-1 in Virginia's last seven games overall.
* Under is 4-0 in Virginia Tech's last four home games.

Preview: Bearcats (22-2) at Mustangs (21-4)
Date: February 12, 2017 4:00 PM EDT

The top teams in the American Athletic Conference will clash for the second time in four weeks on Sunday when No. 11 Cincinnati faces No. 25 Southern Methodist at Moody Coliseum in University Park, Texas.

Cincinnati (22-2, 11-0 AAC) is riding a 15-game winning streak. The Bearcats are coming off a 60-50 victory over Central Florida.

SMU (21-4, 11-1) has won seven in a row since suffering a 66-64 loss to Cincinnati on Jan. 12. The Mustangs have won 17 of their last 18, including a 66-50 victory over Temple on Thursday.

Kyle Washington logged his seventh double-double of the season in Wednesday's victory over Central Florida, finishing with 14 points, 11 rebounds and four steals. Jacob Evans had 11 points, six assists and four steals for the Bearcats, who won despite shooting 35.4 percent from the field and making just 9 of 29 3-pointers.

"We won anyway despite our struggles from the field, and most of them were wide-open looks," Cincinnati coach Mick Cronin said.

Cronin applauded his team's defensive intensity.

"I was really, really happy with our effort," Cronin said. "I thought we played extremely hard on defense. We had 47 deflections, 12 steals and we held a team to 50 points. You can't ask for much more than that from a defensive effort."

Semi Ojeleye had a career-high 30 points and 10 rebounds in SMU's victory over Temple on Thursday. The Mustangs shot 37.9 percent from the field and made just 4 of 17 from beyond the arc, but they amassed a huge 49-32 rebounding advantage and forced 16 turnovers.

"This was a scary game," SMU coach Tim Jankovich said. "I felt like our guys possibly played a little tight, but Semi carried us from the offensive end, which he's very capable of doing."

The victory came three days after SMU made its debut in the Top 25.

"It's great to get that recognition nationally," Ojeleye said. "We feel like we're a team that can win a national championship, but we have to stay focused on the bigger picture no matter what our ranking is."

This will not be the first time these teams have tangled this season. Cincinnati held on for a 66-64 win over SMU on Jan. 12 after leading by as many as 15 points. Troy Caupain scored 16 points and hit a clutch 3-pointer down the stretch for the Bearcats.

Cincinnati shot 46.3 percent from the field and made 12 of 26 from 3-point range in that game. SMU shot 40 percent from the field, made nine 3-pointers and outrebounded Cincinnati 37-27.

"They're a great team and we knew it would be hard to just blow them out," Caupain said. "They play hard basketball. They load the box heavy and it's hard to get easy baskets.

"When they got back in the game, we shot five jump shots and missed all of them. Coach got on us when we went into the locker room. We gave up two late-half buckets and he was like, 'This isn't a blowout. They're not just gonna lay down for us.'"

Preview: Beavers (4-21) at Bruins (22-3)
Date: February 12, 2017 5:00 PM EDT

No. 10 UCLA is in the middle of a hotly contested Pacific 12 Conference regular-season title chase, while Oregon State is still in search of its first conference victory when the teams meet at Pauley Pavilion in Los Angeles on Sunday night.

The teams also enter the game coming off drastically different results in their previous games.

UCLA (22-3, 9-3 in the Pac-12) won for the ninth time in the last 11 games by making a dramatic comeback after trailing by 19 points early to defeat fifth-ranked Oregon 82-79 on Thursday night in front of a capacity crowd at Pauley Pavilion.

On the same night, Oregon State (4-21, 0-12) lost its 12th consecutive game (all in conference play) with a 92-66 drubbing at the hands of USC at the Galen Center in Los Angeles.

It was the Beavers' fourth loss by 20 points or more this season. UCLA defeated the Beavers 76-63 in Corvallis, Ore., on Dec. 30 when the Bruins were ranked No. 2.

"We've seen (the shortcomings) all year and nothing's changing," said Oregon State redshirt freshman guard Kendal Manuel, who had 11 points against USC.

"We just got to buy in and that's the main thing. Coach (Wayne Tinkle) always says you got to build for the future. We need to actually lock in and do that."

After losing consecutive games against Arizona and USC last month, UCLA is locked into to a conference title chase with Arizona (11-1 in the Pac-12), Oregon (10-2) and California (9-3).

Freshman point guard Lonzo Ball is the Bruins' driving force. He came alive against the Ducks when UCLA needed him the most, making four of his final five shots, including five points in the last 1:10 of the game.

"That's my time to do what I've got to do," Ball said. "The team is comfortable with me in those type of situations. I had the ball and I just wanted to win."

Ball, who averages 7.6 assists per game, finished with a season-low one assist against Oregon but he made up for that with 15 points and 11 rebounds.

He drove for a clutch layup in the waning moments, to give UCLA a 77-72 lead with 1:10 to play. He then answered an Oregon 3-pointer with a 30-footer that was all net, prompting him to gesture and yell on the way back down the court to celebrate a five-point lead with 32 seconds to play.

"Now I don't want five straight from 35 feet away, but if he makes the first four I might," UCLA coach Steve Alford said. "But he just has that feel and I trust him."

With UCLA's firepower on the perimeter with Ball, Bryce Alford, Aaron Holiday and Isaac Hamilton, Tinkle is very concerned.

That quartet is a big reason UCLA has shot 42.2 percent from 3-point distance, a percentage that stands as the second highest in school history. The 1988-89 squad made 42.6 percent of its 3-point shots.

After Oregon State led 6-0 against USC on 3-pointers by JaQuori McLaughlin and Manuel, the Trojans responded by making 6 of 7 from beyond the arc during a 22-9 run to start pulling away.

"They hit five of their first six threes against man-to-man," Tinkle said. "And then we went zone and this same spot that kills us, this right corner. We couldn't get there and they hit a few more. ... Right now, defense on the perimeter is one of our weaknesses, whether it's man or zone."

McLaughlin, who led Oregon State with 12 points against USC, does not get as much publicity as Ball but he is a capable freshman guard in his own right. His 48 3-pointers this season have tied Oregon State's freshman record, set last year by Stephen Thompson Jr.

Preview: Wildcats (18-6) at Badgers (21-3)
Date: February 12, 2017 6:30 PM EDT

MADISON, Wis. -- Coach Greg Gard decided to run a short practice on Friday for No. 7 Wisconsin, since his players didn't get to bed until 2:30 a.m. earlier that day.

The Badgers claimed a third overtime victory in their last six games on Thursday night, with a 70-69 Big Ten Conference win at Nebraska. All three of Wisconsin's extra session games were road matchups.

Wisconsin (21-3, 10-1 in the Big Ten) has a quick turnaround, as it prepares for a game against Northwestern on Sunday at 5:30 p.m. CST at the Kohl Center.

The Badgers have won eight straight and hold a 1½ game lead over Purdue in the Big Ten standings.

Gard said he's impressed with Wisconsin's perseverance, but the Badgers' work to improve is a never-ending objective.

"We've been tested a multitude of ways and I'm proud of how they responded from a fortitude standpoint, but we've got to continue to mature and grow in other areas," Gard said after the win over the Huskers.

Wisconsin senior forward Nigel Hayes scored a game-high 20 points against Nebraska, including a 3-pointer from the top of the key with 13 seconds left in overtime that lifted the Badgers to victory.

That was the only long-range shot of the game for Hayes, who missed 8 of 9 from 3-point range in the preceding three games.

Hayes, who averages 13.6 points per game, said the Badgers are well aware of the task at hand.

"As coach Gard was telling us, we've got to grow, mature better and if we finally put together 40 minutes of basketball, we could be a semi-decent team once we get to that point," Hayes said.

Northwestern coach Chris Collins and the Huskies (18-6, 7-4) have a goal of earning the program's first NCAA tournament berth. The Badgers will pose a tough challenge, considering Northwestern will be without junior guard Scott Lindsey for a second game.

"There's no panic in our locker room, I think there's urgency," said Collins, who would like to see more production on offense from junior guard Bryant McIntosh, senior guard Sanjay Lumpkin and junior forward Gavin Skelly.

Lindsey, the team's leading scorer at 15.4 points per game, has mononucleosis. Collins said on Friday that Lindsey is getting better and expects him back "sooner rather than later."

Senior forward Nathan Taphorn probably will return to the Huskies' lineup against the Badgers. Taphorn injured his right ankle during the first half of Northwestern's 68-55 win over Indiana on Jan. 29 and has been sidelined for two games.

Northwestern has lost two straight and are fresh off a 68-61 home setback to Illinois on Tuesday. The Huskies held a three-point lead with under four minutes to go, but turned the ball over five times in the closing minutes.

Collins said Huskies who have been role players need to adjust to more playing time, pick up the slack on offense and create chemistry with lineup changes. Learning to finish also is a big priority.

Collins is a big fan of sophomore forward Ethan Happ, who is Wisconsin's leading scorer at 14.5 points per game and top rebounder at 9.3. He realizes if the Huskies double team Happ or Hayes inside the paint, other Badgers might make opponents pay for those decisions.

"When you play a potent team that's very good with outstanding players, you have to kind of decide what way you want to go and what you want to do and be committed to it to get them off their rhythm," Collins said.

"There are certain areas that if you're going to take something away, you're going to have to live with (those actions)."

Preview: Cavaliers (18-5) at Hokies (16-7)
Date: February 12, 2017 6:30 PM EDT

Just a little over a week ago, Virginia routed in-state rival Virginia Tech by 23 points, the most lopsided margin in the series since 1991.

The Cavaliers' win over the Hokies was their ninth in the last 10 meetings ahead of the two team's second matchup of the season on Sunday at Blacksburg, Va..

Virginia Tech has lost two games in a row after falling to Miami by six points on Wednesday night. No. 12 Virginia has alternated wins and losses over their last five games but is coming off a 71-55 drubbing of No. 4 Louisville on Monday.

Guard London Perrantes enters the game averaging a team-high 12 points and four assists as the Cavaliers are once again doing it on both ends of the floor with stellar defense and solid outside shooting.

Virginia ranks first nationally in scoring defense, allowing only 54 points per game. Virginia Tech scores at a 79 points per game clip but was held to 48 in the first meeting.

"It started bad and it stayed bad," Virginia Tech head coach Buzz Williams said after the first meeting.

The Hokies boast five players scoring in double figures for the season, led by forward Zach LeDay at 15.7 points per game.

In the first meeting, however, Virginia Tech managed to put only two players in double figures and shot only 35 percent from the field, including a dismal 3 for 20 from beyond the 3-point line.

Virginia will once again try to tame the Virginia Tech zone defense after shooting 46 percent in the first meeting.

The Cavaliers' game against the Hokies is the second of a four-game stretch in which Virginia will face three top 20 teams.

Although Virginia Tech is not ranked, Cassell Coliseum's elite atmosphere will provide a challenge for Virginia who fell to the Hokies in Blacksburg last season.

Despite the difficulty of winning on the road in the ACC, Virginia has disproven that theory over the last few seasons, as the Cavaliers are 23-10 in their last 33 road conference games.

Although they rank second in the country in fewest turnovers per game, Virginia has committed 29 in their last two games after averaging only nine per game for the season.

After Monday night's win over Louisville, in which the Cavaliers coughed the ball up 14 times, Virginia head coach Tony Bennett knew that was something they needed to cut down moving forward.

"We have five days to practice before we play again," Bennett said. "We have to correct those mistakes and get back to taking care of the ball. Our schedule doesn't get any easier so we need to clean that up."

Sunday night's game in Blacksburg will mark the fourth sellout of the season for Virginia Tech and should provide an electric atmosphere for a Hokie team trying to recover from two straight loses.

The teams tip off at 6:30 p.m.

Sunday's Tip Sheet
February 11, 2017

Three of the top men’s basketball teams in the country will be in action later this Sunday in a trio of conference games crossing both coasts and our nation’s heartland.

Starting out west, Oregon State will go on the road to square off against the No. 10 UCLA Bruins in a Pac-12 tilt. Moving inland to the Big Ten, the Northwestern Wildcats tangle with the No. 7 Wisconsin Badgers in Madison and rounding out this trio of matchups is an in-state showdown in the ACC between the rival No. 12 Virginia Cavaliers and the Virginia Tech Hokies.

Oregon State Beavers at No. 10 UCLA Bruins (FOX Sports 1, 5:00 p.m. ET)

Opening Odds: UCLA -27, Total 160.5

Betting Matchup

The Beavers (4-21 SU, 8-15 ATS) come into this game still looking for their first straight-up win in conference play against 12 losses. They have gone 3-9 against the spread during this extended slide and the total has gone OVER in five of their last six games. Oregon State remains one of the lowest scoring teams in the nation with an average of 64.5 points per game and it has only crossed the 70-point mark in twice in conference play. On defense, the Beavers are allowing an average of 72.6 PPG.

The biggest issue for the Bruins in this matchup is avoiding any kind of letdown following their thrilling 82-79 come-from-behind victory against Oregon on Thursday as 4 ½-point home favorites. While UCLA (22-3 SU, 13-12 ATS) has been one of the top teams in the Pac-12 on the court at 9-3 SU, it has been a tough team to bet on at 3-9 ATS. Freshman guard Lonzo Ball matched his season scoring average (15.1 PPG) against the Ducks with a couple of crucial three-point buckets down the stretch to help seal the win.

Betting Trends

-- The Beavers are 9-23-1 ATS in their last 33 road games and the total has gone OVER in 20 of their last 27 games on the road.

-- The Bruins have failed to cover ATS in seven of their last 10 games following a SU win and the total has gone OVER in five of their last seven Sunday games.

-- Oregon State has covered the spread in eight of the last 10 meetings including a 4-1 mark ATS in its last five road games against UCLA. The total has stayed UNDER in five of the last eight meetings.

Northwestern Wildcats at No. 7 Wisconsin Badgers (Big Ten Network, 6:30 p.m. ET)

Opening Odds: Wisconsin -10, Total 128

Betting Matchup

Losses (both SU and ATS) to Purdue on the road as underdogs and to Illinois at home have dropped the Wildcats to 7-4 SU in Big Ten play. Northwestern (18-6 SU, 15-7 ATS) had been able to cover the spread in its previous six games and the total has stayed UNDER in five of its last seven contests. This has been one of the better scoring teams in the conference with 73.8 PPG, but with just 61 points in Tuesday’s loss to Illinois, the Wildcats have failed to cross the 70-point mark in their last three games.

Wisconsin continues to lead the way in the Big Ten standings at 10-1 SU in conference play as part of an overall record of 21-3. The Badgers bring a SU eight-game winning streak into this matchup. However, with a tight 70-69 squeaker against Nebraska on Thursday night as 8 ½-point home favorites they are now 3-6 ATS in their last nine games. That was the most points that Wisconsin has given up in its last five games behind a defense that is fourth in the nation in points allowed (60.2).

Betting Trends

-- The Wildcats have covered ATS in their last six games played on a Sunday and the total has stayed UNDER in four of their last five games following an ATS loss.

-- The Badgers are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 home games and the total has stayed UNDER in 12 of their last 16 games played at home.

-- Head-to-head in this Big Ten tilt, the favorite has gone 11-3 ATS in the last 14 meetings and the total has gone OVER in three of the last five meetings.

No. 12 Virginia Cavaliers at Virginia Tech Hokies (ESPN2, 6:30 p.m. ET)

Opening Odds: Virginia -7, Total 133

Betting Matchup

Virginia’s impressive 71-55 romp over Louisville this past Monday as a 6 ½-point home favorite combined with North Carolina’s loss to Duke on Thursday night has the Cavaliers (18-5 SU) just a half-game back in the ACC regular season title race at 8-3. They are now 7-2 ATS in their last nine games as part of an overall record of 15-7 ATS this year. Virginia still lives and dies with a shutdown defense that is first in the nation in points allowed (54.0), but it got a big night from senior guard London Perrantes in Monday’s win with a team-high 18 points.

The Hokies have just one victory (SU and ATS) in their last four games including a 71-48 loss to their bitter rivals on Feb. 1 as 11 ½-point road underdogs in the first meeting of this season’s home-and-home series. Virginia Tech (16-7 SU, 9-10 ATS) only shot 35.7 percent from the field against the Cavaliers while going a dismal 3-for-20 from three-point range. Senior forward Zach LeDay leads the Hokies in scoring this season with 15.7 PPG and he ended that game with 12 points while going 3-for-6 from the floor.

Betting Trends

-- The Cavaliers have covered ATS in four of their last five games on the road and the total has stayed UNDER or ended as a PUSH in 21 of their last 28 road games.

-- The Hokies are 16-6 ATS in their last 22 home games and the total has stayed UNDER in five of their last six home games against a team with a SU winning record on the road.

-- The underdog in this ACC clash is 11-5-1 ATS in the last 17 meetings and the total has stayed UNDER in five of the last seven games between the two rivals including the past meeting on Feb. 1.

Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

— Michigan 75, Indiana 63— Wolverines sweep Indiana for first time in 22 years.

— SMU 60, Cincinnati 51— First loss since December 10 for the Bearcats.

— Virginia Tech 82, Virginia 80 2OT— Game meant lot more to Hokies, who are on bubble.

— FOX made an additional $20M in ad revenue because the Super Bowl went into overtime.

— Apparently the Cowboys think they can get a third round draft pick for Tony Romo.

— Only two sportswriters, Jerry Green and Jerry Izenberg, have covered all 51 Super Bowls.

**********

Armadillo:Monday's List of 13: Random thoughts on a snowy night

13) Joel Embiid hasn’t played for the 76ers since January 27; they’re 13-18 when he plays, 7-16 when he doesn’t. Apparently Embiid has a slight meniscus tear in his knee, which is why he hasn’t been playing, but then video of him dancing on the stage of a Meek Mill concert in Philly the other night showed up and people in Philly are, uh…….not real happy.

Coach Brett Brown: ”The conversations I had with Joel after I saw the video included a lot, some of which you mentioned. By and large, I’d probably prefer it was a private conversation.’’

I’m guessing the player was introduced to the word “perception” as in, ‘When you’re getting paid millions and you can’t play because your knee hurts, then don’t show up on stage at a concert dancing. People might perceive that you’re not taking your knee rehab seriously.’

12) San Diego State 70, Nevada 56— Aztecs are 6-6 in the Mountain West this season, as their lack of shooting has caused the program to take a dip— last time the Aztecs finished under .500 in conference play was 2005.

In his last two road games, Nevada’s leading scorer Marcus Marshall is 2-22 from the floor.

11) Grant Napear is the Kings’ TV announcer; Friday night, Sacramento is playing terribly against the Hawks, just getting killed. Kings fans are chanting “Ref u suck!!!” when they don’t get calls and Mr Napear says, “The way they’re playing, the fans should be chanting that to the Kings.”

Wow. You don’t get that kind of honesty very often on local broadcasts. Sacramento rallied to win the game, by the way.

10) This info is from Sports Insights: So far this season, 84.5% of NBA games closed with a total of 200+ points. just two years ago, that figure was only 49.6%.

9) Northwestern 66, Wisconsin 59— The long drought is over; if they get Lindsey back soon, they will be in the NCAA’s. Credit to Chris Collins, tough to turn a losing program around.

8) The following passage is from writer Jeff Passan: he is talking about Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria, who hopefully is selling the ballclub soon:

“Over the last 18 years, as Jeffrey Loria sprayed the stench of his naked greed across baseball like the skunk he is, as he destroyed the sport in one city and bilked another out of billions of dollars, as he tore asunder a championship team and micromanaged countless others and behaved like the lamest sort of wannabe George Steinbrenner possible, all blowhard, zero substance, the aggrieved could take solace in one thing and one alone: some day, the game would rid itself of him.”

7) Golf is really hard; on the European Tour this week, guy named Bernd Weisberger had nine straight birdies in his round on Friday. Doesn’t happen much. On the same nine holes the next day, he was +2 and drifted out of contention.

6) If Indiana misses the NCAA tournament, would the school reach out to Steve Alford to see if he would come home to be its coach? Alford coaching UCLA just seems weird; Alford coaching Indiana seems like it should happen.

I’m thinking that UCLA is/was/always will be a really hard job; the shadow of John Wooden, even 40 years later, is tough to coach under. Ben Howland went to three Final Fours and they couldn’t wait to get rid of him.

5) Raiders gave coach Jack Del Rio a 4-year contract extension. You wonder where he’ll be working four years from now; Las Vegas, San Diego, Oakland?

4) If Kevin Durant thinks it is necessary to hire ARMED security for his mother at a game, why would she even bother going to the game? She was surprised that people are steamed at her son bolting to Golden State? That should not be surprising; unfortunate maybe, but not surprising.

3) Tampa Bay Rays signed P Nathan Eovaldi to a $2M deal for 2107, with a club option for ’18; what makes this odd is that Eovaldi had Tommy John surgery and won’t pitch this season, so it is really a future contract for 2018.

2) Reds traded Brandon Phillips to the Braves; LY, he turned down a trade to the Nationals, a contending team. Now he approves a trade to the rebuilding Braves? Unusual.

Braves may have made the trade because Sean Rodriguez needs shoulder surgery after he was injured in a car accident. Initial reports said he was uninjured in the accident.

1) So I’m (trying to) sleep Saturday morning, my doorbell rings, then there is a knock on the door, so I think it might be important- it wasn’t.

Some guy wants to know if I’d like him to shovel the inch or two of snow that fell late Friday night off my sidewalk. I’m not a morning person, but I managed to decline politely and go back to sleep. Don’t be knocking on people’s doors on a Saturday morning.

Sunday, we got a foot of snow; think the guy will show up and want to clear off my sidewalk today? Nah, me either.
