Radio,

Do those inalienable rights only belong to Americans or can they belong the every other nation, including Iraqi citizens? Second, I didn't even think you believed in God, but I'm glad you do. 3rd, the Declaration of Independence (and the rights you enjoy) was enforced and defended by a war, the Revolutionary War. Britain answered the Declaration by sending troops over here to enforce their oppression over us. The 'Constitution' was not written until 'after' the war. The bloodshed of those brave enabled us to have a constitution and a country.

Canadiens president apologizes for fans who booed U.S. anthem

MONTREAL (AP) -- The president of the Montreal Canadiens apologized Friday for fans who booed the U.S. national anthem before Thursday night's game against the New York Islanders.

"The Montreal Canadiens organization has always held a high respect for its neighbors and friends in the United States, and we look forward to maintaining this strong and positive relationship," Pierre Boivin said in a statement.

"We apologize to anyone who may have been offended by this incident, and would encourage all fans at the Bell Centre to conduct themselves in a manner worthy of our game and our two great nations."

Before the game, the sellout crowd of 21,273 was asked to "show your support and respect for two great nations" before the singing of the American and Canadian national anthems. But many fans booed throughout "The Star-Spangled Banner," apparently expressing displeasure with the U.S.-led war against Iraq.

"It is our firm belief that this kind of behavior has no place in the context of professional sports," Boivin said.

The Islanders won the game 6-3, and afterward New York's Mark Parrish -- who's from Minnesota -- expressed disappointment with the booing.

People will boo you for a reason.

These same people will cheer you for another reason if you deserve it.

You only have to give them a reason to feel proud of you.

Humanitariarian help might be a decent start.

But you might consider that to be too girlie.

Radio,

We basically agree, although I find it disrespetctful to say God given, you leave out those of other or no faith.

Gargoyle,

I think that they are rights that anyone of a humanitarian mentality that believes in freedom find to be self-evident. However that view does not give our government the right to impose our will or beliefs on other nations. You would think we would have learned that from Nam.

Dear US friends,
Not all of us Canadians are against what you and the Brits are doing in Iraq. But no one from the media ever seems to interview us, because we aren't booing the American anthem at the hockey game (we're the ones standing in respect and friendship), we aren't the ones burning the US flag on Parliament Hill, we aren't the ones second guessing our neighbours.
We're just the quiet majority of Canadians who support you, not the vocal minority you are hearing about who don't.

ThreeUnits: I suspected as much. It is much appreciated you weren't silent here. The same is true for the Americans in support of the war - 76% as of yesterday's Gallup poll - we are viewed as stupid and ignorant but we ARE the majority, so I guess trailer parks aren't bad after all.

p.s. I live in a 5 bedroom house, paid off with my hard work - but if I had to live in a trailer home due to circumstances, I'd see no shame at all in it.

Ah, but Jazz, the real question is, if you were forced to live in a trailer home due to "circumstances", should the government assist you in dealing with those circumstances, or should they tell you to deal with your problems by yourself?

76% exists because about 20% (the people who think Joe Lieberman makes a better Democrat than Russ Feingold, I suppose) think they have to all of sudden "show support for" a war they opposed two days ago, just because the bombs are finally dropping.

Whatever. If people weren't so pressured by society to fall in line once the war starts, this number would be much smaller.

That's true.
Its much easier not to support US foreign policy outside of the states, where you don't have to worry about scores of Hitler Youth...

Clearly I exaggerate.

I doubt they feel 'pressured' in an anonymous Gallup poll, Funky. The truth is that, incredible as it may seem to some people, Americans generally support their government, whom they've elected. Shocking, I know, but true.

Funky: I have a cousin in TEXAS who lives in a trailer home, last time I spoke with her not only did she not begrudge my economic status but, and I realize this is another shock, she WASN'T ASKING THE GOVERNMENT TO BAIL HER OUT. And stunningly, she was actually happy.

radio: that's your view - mine is you are grossly misinformed with some of your views. Cie la vie ... er, goddamnit, I used a French term!!!

no. using a french term you would've said, "C'est la vie."

But who REALLY cares, right?

also, americans have not traditionally trusted their govt. Not, at least, until the latter half of the twentieth century. Our founding fathers didn't trust the potential govt. that they helped create.
Hence, Ben Franklin's famous quote, "Gentlemen, we have given you a republic- if you can keep it."

The American Anthem has a bad beat and you can't dance to it. I'd give it a 1.

It seems to me that your anti-American diatribe is more from jealousy than from actual historical perspective. I think that, much like the Canadians, you wish to be the 51st state.
Well, forget it - we already have enough welfare cases; we don't need more.

Try getting a job, you might feel better about yourself.

Because of our foriegn policies we don't need an army. You send in bombs and we send in humanitarian aid. The average Canadian has a higher standard of living than the average American so the jealousy arguement is crap. All this plus safer streets, cleaner air and streets, medicare, longer life expectancy, no code orange alerts. Yeah it sucks to be Canadian.
