"Henry acknowledged B.C.'s caseload is higher now than it was when B.C. began shutting down public services and businesses in March, but said today health officials understand much more about the virus, including how to track and prevent transmission.

"Shutting down is not an answer to things," Henry said, pointing out that even New Zealand has been unable to completely prevent transmission of the disease.

While there have been some issues with exposure to the virus in restaurants and bars, Henry said the vast majority of businesses are taking the proper public health measures, and she worries that a blanket shutdown will just drive social functions underground.

Coronavirus Lockdowns: why we must end this failed policy

He makes some good points, but also includes a lot of BS which i've already refuted or addressed here on the Rx.

Add to that that C-19 is way more infectious & it's easy to see how it's way worse than the flu & lockdowns were justified.

There have been many reports saying the death tolls have been under counted, not only in the USA but in China, Iran, India, etc.

What is obviously clear is:

1) serious vehicular accidents & deaths are way way down
2) flu deaths & serious complications have decreased tremendously
3) C-19 ill health & deaths are far less due to the lockdowns
4) likewise probably other communicable diseases (e.g. tuberculosis, HIV) have been greatly reduced by the extreme safety measures in place
5) street crimes have probably been highly reduced.
6) families have been able to spend more time together enjoying each others company while free from the slavery of that 4 letter word "work" that the vast majority hate. Giving more time for quality of life activities like sex & various entertainments.
7) abortions (child murder) are probably down.

BTW re the OP, Henry supported the lockdown in the early pandemic. When she says "Shutting down is not an answer to things," i take it she is referring to the present situation in BC.

Without the world shutting down in the early pandemic we wouldn't have a million dead, but at least several millions.

The author states that Sweden successfully flattened the curve. If you consider it a success that Sweden has had many more combined deaths than their 3 neighbour countries who have a combined 50% larger population than Sweden, then that's quite an odd definition of success. Sweden is clearly badly losing the battle compared to their 3 neighbours who, unlike Sweden, locked down.

IF you read the article, looked at the charts , (SLOWLY) and you are still hanging onto ,mightily, to your silly early death tally defense? then its clear, you dont have an open mind. As a heads up, being wrong is okay, we are all wrong at times. It doenst mean your an idiot, rather , hanging on to a position when its becoming crystal clear that said position is murky at best is idiotic

how is Sweden doing NOW ? :) Dont be so myopic, deaths arent the only factor. (see graph below)

also, Sweden's death tally early on (like Canada's-- remember the data i provided you from your OWN govt) were from poorly protected LTC facilities; they didnt protect the greatest at risk . That's on Sweden's leaders, and their PM was man enough to apologize to his country. Sweden's death toll would have been much lower.

the Swedes are much better situation to handle a 'second wave'. Looks like they r doing pretty good, no?.....its okay, you can say 'yes, they seem to be on the right track'...deep breadth

Typical remarks of those who are losing a debate & have nothing of substance to add.

how is Sweden doing NOW ? :)

The subject i addressed was Sweden's non shutdown strategy compared to their 3 neighboring countries who did shut down. Sweden is clearly losing with their strategy & it isn't even close. The difference in deaths is horrific. Five times more deaths with a population 50% less than their 3 neighbours says it all.

Nobody said deaths are the only factor. Economically Sweden is doing no better than their 3 neighbours while Sweden has way more deaths.

also, Sweden's death tally early on (like Canada's-- remember the data i provided you from your OWN govt) were from poorly protected LTC facilities; they didnt protect the greatest at risk . It's on their strategy. They allowed the virus to spread much more easily than their neighbours who shut down.

Time will tell. As it stands Sweden is losing badly.

VICTORIA -- Drug overdoses continue to kill British Columbians in record high numbers as the latest figures show 175 people in the province died after using illicit drugs in July, nearly tying a record set just one month prior.

"What the latest numbers show us is that the overdose crisis has been made worse by the COVID-19 pandemic and the unprecedented tragedy of death and loss to families in our province continues," said provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry.
"The toxicity of drug supply is extreme, and I implore anyone who may be using drugs to not do it alone," Henry said. "For friends and family members who are concerned about loved ones, reach out and connect with them and let them know they are not alone."

..................

sad sad sad . Paranoia, fear has unleashed a tremendous amount of collateral damage . Kudos to Dr Henry for speaking out :)

X-files has applauded Canada's economic 'recovery' in various threads, mocking the US and putting Canada on some kind of pedestal

well, Canada is a nanny state right now. 8 million on the dole, over 800,000 delaying mortgage payments. This moron thinks printing money, handing out checks to anybody and everybody 'is a recovery' , thousands of small businesses are in trouble.

Governments are printing and borrowing money at unprecedented levels, leaving an inter-generational legacy of alarming debt burden and wealth gaps. In the most extreme instance, Canada’s Central Bank has printed and inflated its monetary base by 347%
