Can somebody explain to me why Jessica Lynch is considered a "hero"?

Let me get this straight. She crashed into another US Humvee, got lost & was spared by the mercy of the Iraqi troops??

Now she's a hero?

I don't mean anything bad hero, I'm glad the lady is alive & I wish her the best of recoveries, but I honestly don't understand what was heroic about getting lost in the dessert?

I've never heard of Canadians getting lost like this.

Every American war needs a poster child for dedication, commitment, sacrifice, blah, blah, blah.

Lander I tend to agree with you on this one.

She's more of a hero for the strong will she showed to stay alive and having some hope she'd be rescued. Most would have given up all hope and died.

the canadians have the US to protect them, why would they ever have the ocassion to get lost in combat?

Out,
As far as I know Canadians don't often fight, but you don't ever hear of any Mountees getting lost in the woods do you?

Lander,
I wouldn't compare that to riding around in the desert during a war, not many land marks, I'd imagine. Hopefully you're joking.

Two words: Hero Worship

That's about it.

The only difference is that once we had Patton and POW's.

Stories like this highlight family values and the comraderie that war is said to bring about; they take people's minds and attention off of war, unjust or not.

Out,
I never rode around in the desert, but the other guys didn't seem to get lost. They're the heroes - they stayed and fought without getting lost along the way.

Lander,
Others got lost they just had the manpower and fire power to find there way. This outfit was ill-equiped to fight the opposition they ran into that day.

Lander-Trust me it would be very easy to get lost in the desert. Remember she is just a PFC so she didn't have jack to do with that convoy getting lost. But i agree with you on the hero thing. I think if they wanted to make heroes then how about the guys who rescued her? They are making heroes out of the most incompetent soliders. It disgust me.

gamblingislife,

just like those clowns who were captured in bosnia a few years back. a friend of mine who was stationed there said you would have to be a complete moron to let that happen.

Best part was they showed the video on her at home on the porch and it was STRAIGHT SOUTHERN STEROTYPE. Big giant sloth of a woman in a sleevless shirt and a skinny dude in the background with a classic mullet.

i think this whole Iraq thing should be an eye opener to Americans how we are not as free as we think. During the whole thing I watched alot of internation broadcasts online, read international newspapers and ALOT of stuff was left out. Long before it came out here about how it was basically staged, it was all over the world. The real hero is the little Iraqi doctor who walked to find Americans and than walked back as not to alarm anyone.
