I use Flook because I like their slogan. If we get it there on time it's a Flook.

Bigbet,

Did you make some more progress on this? I might need some movers in the not too distant future and wanted to see how much dealing these guys are willing to do so far.

well, plans have changed, and we are not moving.

but hit uhaul, penske, then budget. each time tthey quote you a price tell them a competetor has a better one. go back and forth with it.

i got mine down to about $775 so far, but i have to cancel now. i imagine if i would have waited till 3 days before the move and go to cancel, i would have got lower.

also, budget has the most competitive rates, and are willing to wheel and deal. they also have a entertainment coupon for 10% off. i dont need it, so if you are moving by the end of december, i can bring it to the bash if you are attending.

Good to see your staying put......moving is a *itch.

You would have been down to around the $400 figure by moving time.

Wow, nice discounts there. I have a potential trip I am working on for October. I have tried the same tactics but the discounting just isn't very strong so far. My progress so far:

1st round
Ryder (Budget Trucks) $1880
UHaul $1609
Penske about $1750

2nd round (within a week got call backs)
Ryder $1700
UHaul $1609 (said "better price once we get closer")
Penske no discount

3rd round (calls here and there over last two weeks)
Ryder no discounts yet
UHaul sam story
Penske offered to match UHaul's best price. I claimed I got $1400 from them and they said "no way you got that"

Part of the issue is their frickin charge for a car tow is ridiculous. A piece of metal that keeps the tires in the air runs anywhere from $250-400 and there are no discounts. This isn't even the rig where none of the tires of the car are used, this is simply the cheapo way to tow a car. No way they can justify those prices on these things. I know it is early, but right now none of them are willing to play much. Will the big cuts come in a month or so?

Bill- They will cut their rates right up to a few days before you are planning your move.

Just make sure all the companies have your phone number and you have cancelled a reservation with them and told them you have a better deal.

GOOD LUCK BUDDY

Good point Fish, I haven't made reservations yet since I don't have solid dates, just a range. I just called and told them I was flexible, but that their prices had to go down so they could give me any date in about a 20 day period and I would take it. I think tomorrow I will take your advice and start making some definitive reservations and then cancel to see what happens.

My prior moves were paid for by employers or done with a borrowed pickup and my cars. This is the first time I have to shell out my own money and get some rental equipment. Moving sucks and ain't cheap, but I have to say getting out of f-in Reno is worth every penny!

I would use big company for a cross country move

I have moved about 15 times for various reasons but only usually moved to next town or next block so I used local companies

Good Luck to you
